Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy, Mark, Luther King Day, myself, Gret Smith back there
(00:02):
behind the glass celebrating along with the other.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Night five six nine zeros. A text line Big Show Tonight.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Coach Jay Gruden is going to join us here at
the bottom of the hour. You a chance to talk
to him, formerly the head coach of the Washington Well
then Redskins, now commanders Latt Sanderson going to join us
in the seven o'clock hour. Got a weekend recap the
NFL six pack. It's been a busy day so far
(00:29):
in NFL news. Colts Hire lou Anrumo as defensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Knew that was coming.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Good for him, Yeah, he was a scapegoat in Sancy. Yeah,
and we knew that was coming. We talked about that
on the show. I think it was last week the Bears,
which if you've listened to this show since last November,
you already knew this. Hired Ben Johnson today, probably the
(00:55):
most sought after candidate to be a head coach, and
I'll tell you per sources that the reason that he
chose that job is quite simply the quarterback. He looked
at the Jacksonville thing and didn't feel like that there
was organizational alignment there because they were going to keep
(01:16):
Trent balk and he was concerned about the role that
Balki would have in that organization, Concerned that having somebody
who is in the owner's ear the way he is
might be detrimental to building the unified vision that he
wants to build.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
And I don't I don't blame him.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Because you know, Jacksonville has Trevor Lawrence down there. They
had somebody that would have been attractive to Ben Johnson.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
But at the end of the day, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
If you have somebody that you think is going to
be a hindrance to what it is that you tried
to build, I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
How many shots do you get it being a head
coach in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
So he chose the Bears over the Raiders because of
the quarterback situation. He liked some things about the Raiders,
but the conversations that he had about what the plant
quarterback was didn't really seem definitive. The Raiders hold the
number six pick, they don't really have any I mean,
you've got a Gardner minshew an at O'Connell there right now.
(02:17):
You don't really have anything in the pipeline. You don't
really have the amo to have anything, and then you're
looking at this draft, is that really it? Are you
going to try to convince Russell Wilson to come over?
And you know, in free agency make a play for
a Kirk Cousins. So having the young quarterback that's cost
(02:38):
controlled already, somebody that he got to see on the
other side of the field multiple times this past season,
and the Bears made a great offer.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Didn't get to pick are the general manager.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
There'll be Ryan Poles, but beyond that, you're getting fourteen
and a half million a year.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Fifteen million a year, you got the young quarterback.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
There's a pre built defense in the NFC North, let's
face it, a much softer division than the AFC West.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
So you think Ryan Pole's safe no matter what.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
I think Giant Holes will be the general manager for
this coming season. After that, I don't know, but for
this season right now, he will be the general manager
if they can and see if they can work together.
If that doesn't, Kevin Warren will fire Ryan Poles and
replace him. And I would suggest that the original candidate
to be the general manager with Ben Johnson, is probably
(03:27):
going to wind up being the general manager in New
York with the Jets, and that's Lance Newmark, and he
is probably going to hire Aaron Glenn. Newmark has a
lengthy history with the Detroit Lions, a very good relationship
with both guys, and so I think we're starting to
see this head coaching carousel start to play itself out.
And if Lance Newmark and Aaron Glenn are indeed the
(03:51):
expected hires in New York, well that pivots us to
New Orleans, who had Glenn at the top of their
list as well. And again it's not done yet, but
it seems to be training this way and New Orleans
now they've got to make a decision. Do they want
to wait around on the young guy and Joe Brady,
(04:12):
the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, or do they
want to make it immediate hire.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Ian Mike McCarthy.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
And McCarthy has an extensive relationship with Mickey Loomis there,
so I you know, I tend to think that they're
going to wind up going with Mike McCarthy in New Orleans.
So that puts us in We're two for two already
(04:44):
because we got Rabel and we got Ben Jonson the Bears.
Now I'm projecting Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets
and Mike McCarthy New Orleans Saints. That leaves the Jaguars
where I believe it will be Cohen. They're going to
interview Robert sala as well. Again, he had a really
good first interview there. But I think Salah's gonna wind
(05:07):
up being the defensive coordinator for the Niners this year.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
I believe they're going to go with Liam Cohen as
the head coach there.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
I'm not that's not set in stone, but you know,
I'm not gonna project that one yet, but that's one
that I think will happen.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
For Dallas, this is a convoluted one and the leaders
in the clubhouse are Kelvin Moore and Brian Schottenheimer. Uh,
if the Eagles win, obviously got to wait a little
bit longer for Kellen to fill out his staff, and
I don't know if you want to do that at
that point. Promoting Brian Schottenheimer internally is going to get
a lot of fans in an uproar, But you know
it might be the smarter move what all said.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Now, Brian Shotaw's been our league long time. You know,
he's at a coach.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Oh, he was a hot canon did what like almost
a decade ago to be a head coach, and he
turned down a couple of jobs.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, you know, and the son of Already Schttenheimer. You know,
it'll be it'll be interesting to see how that one
plays out. One thing I will say is that Dion
Sanders stuff is an absolute joke. Okay, it amazes me
how many people fell for that. They don't even have
an interview schedule. There's no impediment to Dallas. It's scheduling
an interview with Deon Sanders none. They could literally schedule
(06:12):
one tomorrow at any time whenever they wanted. They don't
have any rules like they would do with other coaches
that are in the playoffs or having a weight or
any that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Could have done it at any point. They don't, and
they're not.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
It was always trying to help Prime get some extra
money out.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
To see you, and that's that.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
How about Baker Mayfield getting all these offensive coordinators hired
as head coaches.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Hey, you know, I'm not mad at it. And so
I said, I called him the King Maker because he's.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Getting these guys high.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
And then that leaves the Raiders, and I've been pretty
vocal about thinking that Pete Carroll probably winds up in
that job. Now, keep in mind, there are some names
out there that could impress in interviews. You know, a
Todd Monkin could come along and impress in interviews and
get one of these jobs.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
You know, Vance Joseph is known to be a good interviewer.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
I I don't think it's going to go that way,
but it is entirely possible. So I'm just trying to
lay it out for you with with what I what
I think is going to happen from here. And I believe,
like I said, Eric Glenn, I think I'll take the
Jets job and he'll go with general manager Lance Newmark.
John Spytek will take the general manager job with the Raiders.
(07:24):
I think it'll be Pete Carroll for the Raiders with
with some sort of succession plan, you know, fear a
four year deal.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
With succession planing kind of thing. We'll see. I like
Pete Carroll to the Raiders.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Man, I'm scared of that because Pete Carroll brings an
instant credibility. He will make them competitive. Whatever you think
of Pete Carroll does not losing football games, you know,
so you know it's it's it's fascinating to me because
on the one like, I got accused by Raiders fans
of trying to tell people that trying to convince them
(07:59):
that they, you know, Ben Johnson to go to the
Bears or whatever.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I'm like, Bro, I'll be honest with you here, I'd
almost rather have.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Ben Johnson with the Raiders because there's an unknown commodity
there he could wash out.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I know he's gonna make them.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
Better, right and he's won with a rookie quarterback before
with Russ and Seattle. You think they're going to be
bringing in a rookie quarterback this year, maybe Schear Sanders.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
I mean, that's dangerous for the Broncos.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
But what a freaking division we would have of head
coaches if he does go a legendary.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Head coaches between Andy Reid, Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton, and
Pete Carroll. You're talking about the NFC playoffs from you know,
the early twenty tens. Oh, I shudder to think what
the chewing gum budget is for the AFC West at
that point.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
I think Jim Harbaugh's got a little something other than
chewing gum in his mouth a lot of the game.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Well, he's been known to do both. I think he
had to switch to gum though recently for reasons read
obviously a big gum cheur.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And then everybody knows Sean Payton's big juicy fruit guy,
that Pete Carrow.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Pete's got that wad.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Though it looks like Big League Q or like blah
blah bubbah, it's like regular gum.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
I just wonder how much he just spits on people,
especially players when he's talking to him, because he's gott
to have so much saliva rolling around in your mouth
with that.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Kind of gum. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Five six six n Zerols text line. We got Jay
Gruden joining his bottom of the arm former head coach
for Washington offensive coordat around the league several different places,
brother of John Gruden. Just a little quick pivot here,
what have you thought about John Gruden with a barstool Sports.
I know you're not the biggest barstool sports fan, but
I thought he's had some great moments and entertainer, I mean,
(09:49):
for it so entertaining. I don't I don't like him
peddling his services there just because it's so you know.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
I mean it's Maxim magazine, you know.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
I mean that's just like you're you're peddling for a
fifteen year old audience. That's what barstool is, you know.
I think he can do better. The question is is, like,
is his reputation at the point where you know it
takes a little rehab like that to get to get
him back into those jobs. He's just a natural entertainer
and a fun guy. He breaks football down the ways
(10:18):
that are fun and funny. And I think, you know,
there was there was a rumor going around that maybe
he gets an interview from Dallas for that job, for
the Cowboys job.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Now you talk about getting yourself some publicity with a
hire man, John Gruden and Jerry Jones coexisting.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Look, I'm here to see the train wreck. I'm here
for the car crash.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
But you know, as it sits right now, that's that's
pretty much where I think the head coaching carousel is
probably going to wind up.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
It just looks like it just looks like that is
leading that way looking around the league some of the
other things.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Uh, I thought that Stafford might be a guy to
consider retirement this offseason.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Now I'm not so sure might want to run it
back one more.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
I was so ready to rub it in your face
today about him in a cold weather game. Man, I
thought they were going to complete that comeback.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Which the one that guaranteed me the Ravens too. Who
is it that guarantee me the Ravens. We're gonna be Buffalo?
That was nick?
Speaker 4 (11:26):
I think, Okay, well maybe it was Ryanka sports heck
of a game, though.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
I was great. There were some There were some decent
games this weekend.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
It was.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
It was fun, but right when he fumbled that handoff,
I was like, damn, it's gonna be so obnoxious about this, which,
to your credit, you haven't been yet.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
But we're done the recap here a little bit. Nobody
told me nothing.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
No, I mean it was I thought that Philly would
beat them by more, you know, in the end, and
I guess, you know, the Rams sort of came back there.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
At the end of the day.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
They did get out to a two score lead for
a little while there, and the Rams sort of came
back there at the end and made it look closer
than it was. The big thing I think Washington was
was probably the surprise to most people.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
I texted our guy. Coach Pagano I did too. He's like,
why not us? And I'm like, well, because you gotta
play Philly next week.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
But we'll be uh, we'll be honoring coach Pegano with
Beastie Boys in this first hour.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
That's what I like. That's what I like to hear. Yeah, coach.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Uh, It's just I just love it, man, And it's
to me. It was one of those things after everybody
crapped on me for two years for want Dan Quinn
here and I mean just merciless everywhere.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Why would you want that choke artist bra bra brah
brah brah.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Yeah, and you forget that he built a twenty eight
to three lead against the Patriots, right, I mean you can't.
What do you gotta do with Tom Brady and your
offensive coordinator won't run the ball?
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (12:55):
You held Tom Brady to three points through most of
three quarters. I mean, you know, I think it's lay
some defense. You got twenty eight points on a Bill
Belichick defense through three quarters? Is it one of the
old time iconic choke ups?
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Let just can't lay that all at the feet of
the head coach. There were other things in Atlanta they
could not get the defensive personnel right. They just couldn't.
I tend to lay some of that at the feet
of Thomas Demetrov. I know people are on the league
due but you know a lot of people want to
lay that at the feet of Dan Quinn.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Point is, however, that Dan.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Quinn and Cliff Kingsbury two guys that everybody said were
washed and whatever else, And when they hired him it
was a joke.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Washington was gonna be a joke.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Just beat Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, the two hottest
head coaching candidates out there.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Golf went full golf. The turnovers, that was tough to see.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yeah, I mean, you know one he threw in a
triple coverage. Yeah, I was doing here and they put
Sam Branford back in there. About Teddy two Gloves getting
some action. Yeah, that was fun. You know, I love
the culture the Lions have built. You saw Dan Campbell
with the press are afterwards just emotional.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
And you lose these games. Man, It's like the players,
you know what they put into it. We people don't know.
(14:45):
You know what they go through. You have to get
up bodies beating ship, you know, mentally, stay locked in
and do those things so.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Long season small fault, small fault. Man, that's you can't
you can't listen to that, not fear.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
You know that dude puts one hundred and ninety percent
of himself into every game and he's sitting there like,
I love it that he just jumps up there and
takes accoutability.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
I mean, it wasn't on Damn Campbell. It wasn't.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
But he jumps out in for an os my fault,
but my fault, it's on me. Buck stops with me. Well,
I love that. I love a coach that'll get out
there and do that fall on the grenade, never paints
a target on his players.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
He's always he's always.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Picking everybody else around him up and then you know,
taking the flack when there needs to be flac taken.
It just what a great leader, what an absolute leader.
That'll be interesting to see you get you're you're Detroit.
You're gonna lose both your coordinators. Who knows what that
looks like next year, but man, what a what a
(16:05):
turnaround for that franchise, for where they were, and after
everybody you know, Lamb Based did that hire too.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
You guys, remember the conversations when Dan Campbell got hired.
About what a joke it.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Was that they passed on Brandon Staley for Dan Campbell.
They passed on Brian Dable for Dan Campbell. Now, look,
(16:40):
I just I find it. I find it fascinating. I
find it funny. It's one of those things that you
know that when the fans sit there and a laud
and applaud something, and media sits there lauds and applaud something,
and then you you know, somebody else always gets it right.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
It's funny.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
You go back and look at the people who are
great at hiring. The Philadelphia Eagles have been pretty good
at it over the years. Joe Banner, who works for
the Eagles and the Browns. I mean, you're talking about
a guy who hired Andy Reid.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Was partially responsible for Dan Quinn.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
He's been he's been involved in three or four different
head coach hirings and it really panned out.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
And you know what you did, We did get him
on the show. That's what we'll do. I'll reach out
tohm Weened.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
You get him on the show, and you know kind
of picked Joe Banners bre like, what is you what
is it you're looking for to fill these things because
fans and media are like, Okay, this guy's a good
offensive coordator, he's the next head coach. But it's it's
a completely different skill set that you need, you know,
to put it in radio parlance, it's like, well this
(17:50):
guy was a talk show host, he could be a
program director and I would. I will tell you those
are completely different skill sets. Like what our boss Dave
Temper does. I would suck at that so bad. I
think I could do it. I think you think you
can do it. I think you could do anything that
(18:11):
must ask. You get the power to do anything you want.
But I'm just saying, like, just because I have the
the toolkit to talk in front of a microphone doesn't
mean I have the toolkit to be able to manage
all the personalities and managestation Like I don't.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
I don't have any desires. I don't want to manage
people culture problems. Well, that's why Pete Carroll scares you more.
For the Raiders and Bendy, It's exactly what it is.
Pete Carroll's CEO who.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Knows how to build the culture from the ground up,
And that's why it scares me. Over there with the Raiders,
the possibility of him coming in. He's gonna make them better,
whether or not do the best or whatever the division,
you know, whatever, but he's gonna make them better. And
I do believe that having Tom Brady over there in
Mark Davis's ear will make that culture, that organization culturally better.
(18:55):
And I know John Spytech, he's going to be a
good general manager. That doesn't mean that the Raiders are
all of a sudden gonna start winning championships.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
But you know, this division doesn't have any gimme games.
You have to You got the Raiders. Those are the
only gimme games you got. We're not sitting here in
the division. It's got the Jags and the Titans. And
you know.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
You got two gimme games all year. The Chargers aren't
gimme games anymore. In fact, we lost both of them
this year, so I'm a little concerned about that. We
got uh, Jay Gruden coming up here in just a
few Coach Jay Gruden currently with Underdog. You can find
him on Twitter. I always love having him on the program. Coach,
(19:39):
Welcome back to Broncos Country. Now, how you doing this evening?
Speaker 5 (19:41):
I'm doing good. Just watch this game. How do you
guys doing pretty well at it.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
At the court of my eyes. I tried to do
this show, uh as well, you know at game this weekend. Man, Yeah,
Detroit you had washed it.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
What a what a what a great football game.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
And uh, you know it really was one.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
I think they caught a lot of you know, every
day fans and media by surprise.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
But you you said that they were gonna give him,
You said they were gonna get the problems.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
Yeah, Washington has been unfazed by any situation all year.
Jadan Daniels. They've come from behind five or six times already.
It must win games and critical situations. This guy doesn't blink.
He's an amazing player. In the second quarter on slot
that they had on Detroit really caught them off guard
and proved to be the difference. But the kid, he's
he's caught. He's a big time player.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Yeah, he absolutely is. And what a what a great
story for that team. You know.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
One of the other the things we were sorry to
see Dan Campbell get passed a little bit. What an
emotional guy putting his you know, where's his emotions on
his sleeves.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
It was a there was a hire that was.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Roudly panned by you know, media and fans when he
was hired, and now you look at it what he's
done and what he's established there in Detroit as a
as a former head coach, how difficult is it to
get that kind of buy in from a from a
more abund franchise to try to turn things around.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
It's tough. You know, players help. You've had to do
really good personnel department. They did that both in the
draft and free agency, and some of their draft picks
have been just amazing players. You look at Gibbs and
you look at right now, you look at the seol
of the right tackle. I mean they've had a lot
of hits, Campbell, the tight end, port of the Chambel, winebacker,
La Porta, Brian Branch. I mean, this goes on and on.
(21:17):
They have had some major home runs in the draft
and that helps out a lot. And then you have
to hire a good coordinator and they hired a great
one in Ben Johnson and obviously Aaron Glenn and helped
put that team together. So yeah, a lot of things
have to go right. Coaching has to go right. You're
hires an of course the draft and free agency that.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
It does and you'd know something about hiring good coordinators.
The guy who hired Sean McVay, Kevin O'Connell, You employed
Rahee Morris, all those guys head coaches right now. What
jumped out about those guys as young guys that you
wanted them on your staff?
Speaker 5 (21:48):
Well, I had Sean McVay for a long time. He
worked with my brother and myself at Tampa early two thousands,
and then I hired him be in the UFL. I
hired in the UFL receiver coach, and then Sewan went
to Washing to be a tight end or a cality
control guy, and I went to Cincinnati. Then when I
got the job at Washington, I hired to be the
youngest offensive coordinator just because he had knowledge of the
(22:08):
Shamahan offense and he knew what I was running offensively.
We kind of tried to combine the systems to make
it easier for RGI three and Kirk Cousins. It worked
out perfect. And then you have to groom coaches on
your staff, assuming that if you have a good year,
you're gonna lose coordinator. So we obviously got Kevin O'Connell
and groom ten a little bit. So where Sean left,
it was an easy transition to make com coordinator.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yeah, and it's I mean, that's one of those things
that we talked about we talked about here on this
show sometimes.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
He said, these coaches coming in and you've got a staff,
and you've got all this kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
But if you have success, people are gonna want to
buy to that. They're going to take guys from your
staff and make them head coaches, right, And you've got
to have a plan in the pipeline to be able
to develop and bring guys up.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
But we've seen some coaches able to do it.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Was like Kyle's been kind of able to do that
over there in San Francisco, and then we've seen other
staffs just fall apart after their initial group of coordinators
get post. How do you find how do you put
together some kind kind of of pipeline there so that
you know.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
That you've got a continuity if you guys get poached.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
Boy, I have to coach your coaches. That's the most
important thing. And I had success in offense. Defensively, it's
a different story. I went through two or three or
four of those some of them gums. You know, it
was a little bit more so, you just try to
make sure you coach with it, and then when somebody leaves,
you pull from within your group because that motivates everybody.
Hey man, I'm gonna work my tail off because of
(23:25):
Sean or your offense coordinatory leaves, I'm next in line.
So it's very important to show those guys that, hey,
what you're doing is not going for not You're going
to be next in line if things go well for us.
And fortunately they went well and Kevin got the job,
and then.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
That was it for me. Well.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
Talking with with coach Grud coach Jay Gruden, coach Underscore
Jay Gruden on Twitter, currently working with Underdog Fantasy.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
My guy Josh Norris over there.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
I always always love seeing your stuff there on Twitter. Now,
you were talking about the top head coaching openings and
you would you would put the Bears there at the top.
I think for me, when I looked at that, I
sort of agreed. You got the young quarterback. You have,
of course sort of a pre built defense. There's some
things you need to fix, but there's there's bones there
to work around. What would you view as the other
head coaching openings that that sort of excite you in
(24:11):
this cycle, I would.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
Say Dallas because it is America's team and they have
Dak Prescott, Edie Lamb, and they got the players in
that building that are pretty bag gone good.
Speaker 3 (24:19):
You know.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
To me, it starts at the quarterback position. If you
have a young quarterback, it's pretty talented. That's where you
want to go, you know, because it's hard to just
build a team without a quarterback. Over to get one
of the draft, or we'll get one free agency. No,
it's Eiier said that. And then I put Jacksonville up
Derecus Trevor. Trevor's been very inconsistent, but he does have
the talent. Jacksonville is a cool place to live. I'm
here right now, actually, And so I put them three
(24:40):
New Orleans kind of out out of the line. I say,
just because Derek s getting over and they don't really
have any plan in plays Stencil Ratler, I don't think
is the answer. He may be, I don't know. He's
pretty young. Jets. You know, Aaron Rodgers forty something years old.
How many years are you going to play? They got
to start from scratch, sign a free agent. I don't
know what they're gonna do. And then Vegas. Vegas would
be interesting, but I couldn't live in Vegas.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
For multitude of reasons. So as we look at as
we look at that Raiders job, and.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
It's interesting because there was some you know, some steam
or whatever, some smokey insiders talking about to you know,
the Raiders possibly making a play on Ben Johnson. But
you look at the you Judgtapost those two jobs, and
it is all about the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
You got a Caleb Williams here in Chicago.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
What do the Raiders do because you really don't have
anything there. You have the six pick in the draft.
It's not really a quarterback friendly draft. Uh, the free
agent market for quarterbacks doesn't look like it's going to
be super enticing.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
And you're sitting there with an.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
Adan O'Connell and a Gardner Minshew right now, you know
the big name for the Vegas after Ben Johnson's out
as Pete Carroll, Uh, what would you what are you
doing at the at the quarterback position right now there?
If you're if you're.
Speaker 5 (25:41):
Vegas, that's crazy, Pete Carroll Early maybe yeah, I think
you got to just strap it up, Aidan O'Connell until
you find somebody else. Just really do your due diligence
in the draft, and maybe there's one non known guy
third four, fifth round you can maybe find and get
lucky out like a rock perty in the seventh. You know,
you never know, there's somebody out there that may come
in and compete with the at O'Connell. But I think
(26:02):
he did enough good things to, I guess, help keep
his job. I know he's probably not good enough, but
that's all you got, so you got to continue to
coach him until you find somebody better. And that's hard
to do well.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
A team that's sort of in that zone, I think
maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
You look at what they've got out there, do you
bring Russell Wilson back? If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
I don't know what they do. Really, I'm not sold
on either Russell or Justin Fields, to be honest with you.
You know, I think Justin's had a couple opportunities. He's
still young, he's athletic, I get it. He's just not
a very good passer to the football in my opinion,
But I don't know what to do. I think Russell's
had his day in the sun. I think it's time
to move on from Russell Lte. I'd give Justin Field
the reins and then try to drap somebody else and
compete with them and go from there. But that's just
(26:44):
my opinion.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
Talking with Jay Gruden coach Underscore Jay Gruden on the
Twitter machine, if you guys want to follow along there.
We've got some interesting matchups coming up here for these
AFCSC Championship games. Kansas City, Pad Maholmes, Buffalo and Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
That's gonna be a gonna be a fun one. I'm
a little bit more intrigued over here on.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
The NFC side, though, because you've got to a little
less traditional quarterbacks, a little less traditional offenses going on
with Philadelphia and Washington. I like Philadelphia. I think they
got more talent on the defense. Of course they got
fancy all run things there. But what can Washington do
to equalize this thing and help try to take Saquon
Barkley out of the game.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
Well, I think what they did in Tampa was pretty
pretty good. They had a lot of drives over seven
eight minutes. Even last week gets a trick. They had
an eight minute drive, and that keeps your defense fresh
and keeps Sakuon Barkley on the other side on the
sideline standard drinking gatorade. So I got to possess the
football and obviously have production when they do have the ball,
get the ball the end zone. And they've been very
aggressive going forward on forced down in the red zone
(27:41):
and had a lot of success. That's number one, and
then number two. I figured that way to get a
turnover and try to make Jalen Hurt throw it. You know,
they have had trouble for them a forward pass in
Philadelphia for some reason, and they got to get Philadelphia
third down and long and then get after him and
they can throw the ball because they've struggled in that regard.
You know, Washington does have a pretty good defensive lineman
and pain and Allen and Bobby Wagner is a good linebacker.
(28:03):
Branking Lubo's playing good. So they may be able to
get some stops, but it'll be tough because Philadeffie does
have a big mammoth off my flying and one hell
of a back.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Yeah, they do.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
COK with Jay Gruden, coach, tell us a little bit
about this YouTube channel, clean Pocket, the work you're doing
with Underdog right now.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
Yeah, me Colt McCoy, just a few and a Q Shipley.
We just preview games and talk some football on that thing,
you know, and it's pretty fun.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
And they do a good job.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
It's cutting them up and putting the little pieces out there.
And then we have a big hour show that we
do as well. So, uh, just a couple of guys,
a couple x football guys, just talking to the ball.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Well, I appreciate you taking to the time tonight and
we always appreciate you having on the show.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Looking at forward to talking to you again here soon.

We have true crime, uh, lifestyle advice and celebrity vanity project.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
Will Farrow acted like a character he played in a
movie twenty years ago and.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
Had a crap sequel that ruined so much goodwill for Anchorman.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
Still one of my favorite movies of all time.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
Anchorman one is great, Anchorman two is absolute unbridled garbage,
almost like Zoom or two.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Yeah. I'm sure they'll come out with a third here
before long. I mean, if it's making money. To be fair,
Anchorman two was panned so hard, I doubt it that's true.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
And honestly, you know, ever since Will Ferrell and his
writing partner there broke up, like quit quit working together
Adam McKay.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Yeah, ever since they quit working together, he hasn't really
done movies like that much anymore.
Speaker 1 (30:22):
I mean, the Will Ferrell stuff that's come out since
that has not been really those those kinds of movies.
Adam McKay went on to do different kinds of movies too.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
I'm trying to think of what he's done lately.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
He did I remember, don't look up. He did that
one that was the Jennifer Lawrence, Leo DiCaprio.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Netflix movie or whatever. That's pretty good. Yeah, he did
that one. They both went down a little more serious role.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
I feel like kinda yeah, it felt like they had
that they were not really able to sort of do
what I either wanted to do because they were sort of
pigeonholed into.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
What it is that they did together.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
Man, some of those behind the scene videos of Anchorman
and step Brothers are so hilarious, just them riffing back
and forth and improving and then they'll find whichever one
they like best and put it in the movie. But
some of the deleted scenes are so great. Yeah, they
just don't make movies like that anymore.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
He did uncredited rewrits on Aunt mana Wasp, so that
the an Man a Wasp movie, Adamcaid did uncredited rewrites
on that. I didn't know that, yep. And he also
he did he wrote the original ant Man. Yeah, he
didn't do Quantum Mania, but he did the other two
the only good one, right, the good ones, the two
good ones, the one that was you know, he also
(31:44):
did Remember the Other Guys.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
Oh, yeah, that was great.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
That was when him and you know, Pharrell were still
working together. He also wrote the song Pimps Don't Cry
and Let the Dragon Loose.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
From that movie. Uh.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
He's credited as the songwriter for Boats and Hoes from
Step Brothers.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Oh, he was the guy.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
He did Anchorman, Talladega Knights, Step Brothers, the other guys, like,
they had a run there of about six eight years
where they put those together, and then he did Anchorman
two and it got it went out of whack from there.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Now.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
He also wrote and directed The Big Short, So if
you guys ever watched that movie, you know he wrote
and directed that.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
He wrote directed Vice. I don't know if you remember
that one.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
And then of course, like I said, don't look up.
So anyway, not that everybody needs a history lesson on
what Adam Kay did. But we go down the rabbit
hole on this show at times. Last Sanderson's gonna join
his bottom The next hour got a couple of texts
coming in the six four six wants to know. Would
love to hear your views on why the NFL can't
implement some immediate review of terrible calls. The holding called
(32:48):
Bill's game on Dawkins was worse than Mahomes nonsense.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
How do they not do something about immediate review from
New York?
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Well, ostensibly they're supposed to be doing that, but I
don't know how how do you review a no call? Like,
what's the what's the procedure for that? There's all kinds
of there's all kinds of things I would tweak about
the officiating system within the NFL. And I'll say this,
The reason that it is the way it is is
(33:15):
because controversy sells.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
So they were okay.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
The NFL for a long time was okay with marginal
calls not necessarily even being correct. Now, obviously you're going
to say you want everything to be correct, but the
reality is there was a time where the NFL wasn't
king and they wanted more run on ESPN, and so
(33:41):
if you're if you're the if there's a call to
be debated, and that's tying up minutes.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
On these programming blocks on ESPN, and they're.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
They're talking about NFL football because of this call, whether
it's the fail Mary or stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
The NFL is okay with that.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
So they had an imperfect officiating system for a long
time because it's predicated on the idea that human error
actually adds to the element of the game. The problem
with that is we've gone into the sports wagering era
of sports and people who put their money on the line,
and I am absolutely one of those people. Don't want
(34:24):
era deficiating. You want it correct every time because my
money's on the line. So the NFL I, in my opinion,
needs to revamp the way that they approach officiating. Officials
are only part time employees, they're not full time employees.
They're usually doctors or lawyers or whatever else that do
that on the weekends.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
And I believe that they need a much much.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
Better train up, and I believe they need a much
better quicker and they need to incorporate a combination of
the on field officials with a sky judge who could
look for things that are missed.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
The objective is to stop with the mist calls and.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Get things right, but also speed up the process of
officiating as it were as well.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
I want to revisit this in an eight o'clock hour
because there's a great cut for me in Rapidport on
KO Sports earlier today.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
About what they could be changing in terms of reviewing things.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Yeah, and there's items on the table. The Competition Committee's
been looking at this kind of stuff. We'll get into
some of that a little bit more we come back.
I think we've got a recap of the weekend coming up,
so we'll be right back on BCT.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Dear Lord, Baby Jesus or is our brothers to the
South call you pay zoos.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
We thank you so much for this bountiful harvest of
Domino's KFC and always delicious tuckle Bail
