Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to it Broncos Country tonight. I'm your guest host,
Grant Smith, filling in for Benjamin Albright as he is
out in Indianapolis covering the NFL combine with the og
Ryan Edwards sitting in here with Nick Ferguson, and we
couldn't go too long without our very own wet blanket.
I had to check in with Ben from Indianapolis. Ben,
how are you tonight?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Man?
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Well, you know, it's a rough life out here when
you're when you're traveling with a diva like Ryan and
I having a cater to all of the demands that
his contract writer, you know requires, you know, it's stuff.
Right now, he's in the luxury box with Sean Payton
at the the Pacers in the Nuggets game. I I was,
(00:43):
you know, obviously not allowed into that level of vip uh, So,
you know, just waiting for Ryan to finish whatever his
one on one time with Shot is.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Well, Ben, I know it's kind of early in things.
They'll kick off too later in the week. But what's
been the most interesting news that you've heard since you've
had foot feet on the ground in Indy, Man.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
I mean, there's there's a few things swirling around out there.
The Matt Stafford stuff. I think that's a bunch of malarkey.
I think Stafford's gonna wind up staying in LA. They're
gonna go reach a contract agreement and you know, and
kind of spit him a little bit of money and
get him in the top ten paid quarterbacks and go
from there. So I don't think, you know, there's a
lot of right now, there's a lot of rut about
him going somewhere else, and I don't think that's necessarily,
(01:27):
you know, all that legitimate. The most interesting I think
probably rumor is that's the first two teams, which are
both teams that ostensibly need a quarterback, may not be
selecting one in this draft, which starts to kind of
like get a little of light on how they view
this quarterback class overall.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah, we heard Daniel Jeremiah last week say that he
has cam Ward ranked the same as bow Knicks last year,
and bow Knicks was the sixth quarterback taken, as we
all know here in Broncos country. But speaking of backs
at the combine, the big news over the weekend was
that Shugar Sanders was not throwing.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Do you think this impacts his draft status at all.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Not really. The plan was always for him to throw
it to see you pro day, and that puts eyes
back on to see you program. So from the call
a little program standpoint, you know, that's probably more valuable
for him not to do it. For his perspective, you
had nothing to gain and everything to lose. Right You're
you're considered QB QB two in this draft class. You
get out there and you throw, well, well, everybody expects
(02:30):
that you throw poorly, and all of a sudden, everybody's
you know, changing their mind on you.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
So I don't I.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Don't think it really does the fact that help, you know,
it competed the Bowl game and all that kind of stuff.
I don't think there's any competition questions to be you know,
to be answered with that kind of stuff. You can
put on the tape and you see what the arm
strength is and isn't and so you know, I don't
really think overall that did he had anything to gain?
Speaker 4 (02:52):
My my throlly here, well, you know, it's always interesting
this time of year when it comes to well who's
telling lies and who is telling the truth. And we
haven't even gotten to the workouts of yet. But what
do you think coming out of this weekend possibly put
put on your your fortune tailer hat. What do you
(03:12):
think is going to be one of the bigger stories
after the combine is over.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Well, I think there's a couple of guys that that
will probably make a name for themselves here, guys that
Camion Hampton or the only Walker that there'll probably be
workout you know, specimens relative to their size, you know,
and I think both those guys go to tape to
back it up. One guy that uh I worry maybe
doesn't would be uh a Stewart at A and M.
He'll probably uh the edge of Rusher, He'll probably test
(03:41):
really well, but he doesn't really have a lot of
the production to back it up. You go give a tape,
I don't think you finished as well. So that's that's
one to kind of kind of keep your eye on.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
You want to.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Separate the workout warriors from the guys that have to
tape to back it up. And that's that's one I
think i'd you know, I think i'd keep my eye on.
There's some guys can have a chance to make a
name for themselves, you know. I talked about royals from
Utah State. He's got a chance, especially with that speed
the forty be interesting to see what he can do.
You know, we know Janp's not going to work out now,
so that's you know, that opens the door for some
(04:10):
of these other running backs to come in make a
name for themselves. So I think I get to think
is if you do find somebody who surprises you with
how well they work out, then the question becomes, all right,
I gotta go back and look at the tape. Did
I miss something or has this guy just been training
really well for these Olympics.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Well, speaking of that, you know, I know not everyone
feels the same way about players that view them in
the same perspective.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
When you see.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Guys opting out of working out at the combine, I
know it's such a big deal because NFL Network's there
and they make a whole big, you know, story about
it as bells and whistles. When you think about some
of the players, and Caleb Williams is one of the
guys last year, as you say, Ashon Jenz deciding not
to work out, does this impact in your mind the
(04:54):
an issue viewpoint of the draft status of these players
when they decide not to work out at the combine.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
You know, I don't think so, especially not if you're
you know, somebody who's going to be a top ten pick.
I think everybody just kind of knows. You know, we've
seen the tape, we know what you are. I don't
think there's anything I think for a lot of those guys,
for you know, if you're if you're a top ten pick,
you got nothing to gain and everything to lose. Now
if you're not a top ten pick, and I mean
this in the sense that, uh, you know, because just
(05:24):
somebody's like, what about the guy at fifteen, Well, if
you don't know for a fact that you think you
might be a top ten guy. If you don't know
that you're a top ten guy, go ahead and work out,
because then you you know, you go from the I
think I might be to the I know I am.
You know category. But if you know you're a top
ten pick, there's really not anything for you to do.
I mean, you're risk, you risk a little bit of injury,
(05:45):
you risk having a bad performance, and planning seeds of doubts.
I always say, you know if you're a guaranteed top
ten guy, and you'll know if you're a guarantee top
tenk it is not a I think I might be.
You'll know it then, don't worry about it. But if
you're if you're somebody below that, get out there and
work out, try to improve your stock. Don't you want
to go number one overall? Isn't this about competition? Don't
you want to be competitive with your peers?
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
I think you're right on that.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
And one guy we think we know is going to
be a top ten pick as Travis Hunter, the Heisman
Trophy winner from CU. He's listed as a dB is
he also going to do some wide receiver workouts at the.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Combine as well.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
That is the speculation right now. Everybody seems to think
that he's going to participate in some of the wide
receiver you know, gauntlet type drills things like that. We'll
see if that ultimately comes to fruition. But everybody you
have to talk to you here says that he's a corner.
He's going to be a corner in the league and
then that you know, we'll put some receiver packages in
there for however on goes last and go from there.
(06:40):
But if it sits right now, he's working out as
a corner and they're hoping to maybe see him do
a little bit of the wide receiver drills as well.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
You know, a ben I'm not a huge fan of
that saying okay.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Well he's a DV and that's all he is.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Because think about the postseason awards of this past season
that Travis Hunts are actually racked up. So I mean,
are they saying, okay, well, he's incapable of doing all
these things and they only see him as being a
one trick pony.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
This is it. You can only play dB. I know
it's in the league. We've only had these.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Kind of ideas that the player can only do one thing,
not multiple things.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
For coaches or gms and teams.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
With that type of philosophy, are they doing themselves a
disservice just looking at Travis Hunty Hunter just.
Speaker 5 (07:23):
Do that one lootle small lens.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Well, I think if that was the case, absolutely. I
think the way that they're looking at this is what's
his primary position, you know, and I think everybody agrees
primarily that he's a corner. And then what you do
is you give him some packages on offense and see
how he takes to it, and if you need to expand.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
That you can, and if you don't, you don't.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
But it's so much easier to be a dB with
some wide receiver packages in the NFL than it is
to be a wide receiver and then try to adjust
to the DEFUNI how it is. Yeah, defense, I mean
you talk about all the time, the communication and knowing
where everybody is, that whole that comes from being together
and growing again, and that's tough. It's tough for a
guy to you know, it can't be at both meeting
rooms right there, they meeting at the same time, So
(08:04):
you're going to have to figure out, you know, what
it is that he's going to specialize in and know
what he's going to dabble in. And I think from
that perspective, you know, I think that he's a corner
who gets to dabble in wide receiver and if he
you know, if he's able to handle that, you you
put more on his plate. So I'm hoping that he
goes to a team that views it, you know, kind
of that way. Now, if you're a team that you know,
does pigeonhole in, puts it in one spot and that tick, well,
(08:26):
that's to their detriment, you know, then you get drafted
that organization. It's not utilizing your full skill set and
straight and that's that's their own fault. They're probably not winning.
They're probably picking in the top five, and that's probably
why they're picking in the top five.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Benjamin Albright our guest as I'm filling in for him.
He's on KOA Sports All this week with Ryan Edwards
live from Indianapolis covering the NFL Combine. But one question
for you that is not combine related. We saw the
story today that the Broncos outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoyt
was arrested on suspicion of second degree assault on a
police officer and booked into the Denver jail. What can
(08:58):
you tell us about the detail of this story.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Well, will Hoyt was taking somebody to the Denver airport,
dropped them off, and as he came out, you know
if he picked up their their luggage, took them inside.
He left his car with his hazard lights on. UH
the parking attendant police officer approached him told him that
you know that he needed to h he couldn't leave
his vehicle out attended and UH coach will Hooyd at
(09:23):
that point said you know, kind of sad an explantive
to him. Uh, the police officer repeated it will Hoyt. Then,
depending on the version of events, you hear either shoved
or struck the officer to the ground. Uh, the officer
attempt to fire the taser, he drove off, and then
he was arrested later on. And then you know, and
(09:43):
we now know you know how that played out. So
that's that's the skinny of it in terms of the details.
And uh, he this morning was released on bond. He
had a partial partial Colado partial cash bond. Uh. And
then he'll you know, his his next day at court.
I believe his park tenth. I had to go back
in check that.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Wow, I had not heard the taser part of that story.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Well, that's why you're our NFL insider, even though you
hate the term.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Then, thanks so much for the time tonight.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
I don't know if you'll be eating any boggers like
you were down there at the Senior Bowl, but get
a shrimp cocktail for us.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Okay, I'll get some shrimp cocktail. No booger eating here.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
That's Benjamin all Bright live from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Nick,
I know you had some thoughts on that the escalation
of that.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Michael Wilhoyt story that led to his arrest.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Yeah, things can sometimes, you know, escalate on a routine
traffic stop or a situation like this because sometimes I
know the people at the airport they have a specified
job to keep the traffic flowing, but also to make
sure that the passengers.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
Coming in the party are safe.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
And there's certain individuals and I'm not saying that that
was in this particular case, that sometimes take those jobs
literally too seriously, just so and you know, my thing
is if I if I think that I'm going to
be there for a significant amount of time, then I
may just kind of park in short term parking.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
But in most cases, if you.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Can and you go to dry the DiiA, a lot
of people have been in the situations. You know, there's
a loved one of someone going inside, you just want
to kind of help them. Maybe there's no bagage, no
claim guys or who's normally out there that you can
check your luggage with and you might have to take
it inside, and the smart thing is, you know, put
your hass on. But at the same time, known as
(11:33):
though these individuals have probably been hampered by their bosses
to keep the traffic moving.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Don't allow the cars to sit there once again for
security reasons.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
But this is what I think, man, And look, we
work in communications and a lot of people don't communicate
oddly enough, and in the world of life, it's the
same thing like communication, and my idea is a perfect
deal to it for majority of situations because you talk
(12:02):
to people now, ideas to talk to me not acting right,
and this is where things escalate.
Speaker 5 (12:10):
You talk to me, I'm a grown man.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
You're a grown man, but you're talking to me like
you are my superior and I'm beneath you. And then
that's where things get out of hand, because now I
feel the urge to check you, like, hold on, man,
let's go about this is the right situation. But you
the jibber jab and no, you got your hand. It's
like whoa so now? And no, I want you to move,
(12:33):
And it's just like, this is how things reach your
tipping point. But if we approach every.
Speaker 5 (12:39):
Person like they were a human.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Being, then we have dialogue that's equally exchanged. And I
understand when you're talking about sorry, officer parking attendant, my bad.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
I'll go ahead and move the vehicle. Nothing.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
But then some officers want to jump billy badass and
go you know what, No, I'm going to show you.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
I'll be charged.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
And then things get to a point someone gets shoved.
And I could tell you this as being an African man,
African American man, but the majority of my life that's
usually how it happens, right, sometimes, And I'm not saying
I wasn't there and I don't know how this situation,
but I'm just trying to let you in the little
insight how these situations escalate. And I tell you, anytime
(13:23):
you somewhat bump a cop, touch a cop in any way,
it doesn't even have to be aggressive way.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Now, that's assault, Right, that's like touching an NFL referee.
You're getting a fifteen yard flag or in this case,
maybe a taser shot at you.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Yeah, And they've been adding that part. I was like, what, like,
he's shooting a taser. This is what I'm visualizing. He's
shooting a taser where the car is going in a different.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Direction, right, Yeah, And you know we've had this conversation
before on Broncos Country Night, and I thought you and
you and Ben handled it really well. I forget what
spurred the conversation, but you know, it only takes one
bad egg to give a bad name to all these
other good cops out there, you know, like the people
that are doing their job the right way.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
And we don't know how this story is going to
play out.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
The Broncos linebacker coach Will Hoyt could be at fault here.
We don't know the whole story. It'll be interesting to
see how it plays out. But it's so funny how
just one story like this, if the officer isn't the wrong,
and then give a bad name and create that narrative
once again of all cops are bad instead of just hey,
maybe this one particular guy was just taking himself a
(14:25):
little too seriously and that's a.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Bad thing that comes out of situations like this, be
a white, black cop or whomever is that that is
the only thing that's seen. Well, this guy was wrong
and he did this, and whoa, whoa, whoa. There's two
sides of the story, right, And my mom always said
he was another one. Most people think the grass is
green on the other side, but when you flip.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
It over his bron.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Your mama always dropping the nuggets a ladder man just
the way we started the show.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
What I don't even know what that means, but for
this type of situation, for me, what I would like
for everyone to learn from it.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
Don't look at it as though, well, here's a Broncos coach.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Now he's in trouble, because if that was a player,
we already know what the narrative would be.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
Right. Well, all here players again, preferential treatment.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
All of this up, but no thinking they're above the
law exactly.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
So let's let the process of the story work yourself out.
Speaker 5 (15:18):
But more importantly, here's the big kicker. Listen out.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Kids communicate through all disputes at work, out on the street,
at home. Communication is the best way to diffuse the
situation and limit the aggression.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Yeah, and I think this kind of sums up my
point of people saying the narrative are agreeing with whatever
they're going to agree with without listening to all sides
of a story. From the three six to soho on
the common Spirit health techt line, you can.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Join us at five sixty six nine zero.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
But from the three six to oh are you trying
to blame the police officer? Everyone knows you can't leave
your car unattended, and regardless, just say okay, understand when.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
They tell you, I mean, I get that idea, that concept,
that is a rule, that's part of the policy. Don't
leave your vehicle unattended, right because the guys are gonna
come back. Someone's gonna come back and they're gonna say something.
They could take at your car, they could tell it.
But at the same time, even though we know that, right,
people have done that, right, this not make it seem
(16:22):
as though people have not done it. I'm going to
run in here really quick, drop this bag off and
run back out, right. But at the same time, when
you do come back out, even if you're the officer,
even if though you're the person, let's try to talk
to one another with humility because we are still human
beings at the end of the day, and communication is
a perfect deorderant for any situation.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Yeah, a little civil discourse never hurt anybody.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Well, we got to head a break here, thanks again
to Benjamin Albright joining us from the NFL combine in Indianapolis,
and we will have the NFL six pack when we
come back. I'm Broncos Country to Night on KOA.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
You know, I have a tradition down here where I
eat to a one third pound booger slathered in sherry
doctor pepper barbecue sauce, with two strips of brown sugar
chili pepper bacon, a slice of sharp tit or cheese,
caramelized onion squeezed in between two doughnuts.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Well, minus the booger, that sounds pretty good. Frog Coos
Country tonight. As Benjamin Albright always says, the conversations and
the breakspath the conversations and the breaks absolutely man up.
Grit Smith filling in for Benjamin Albright as he It
is on KOA Sports all this week with the O
(17:34):
g Ryan Edwards covering the Combine live from Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
You can catch them again tomorrow at three.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
I hear they're going to get a one on one
with George Peyton at sometime this week as well, so
that'll be interesting to gay.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
That's I'm looking forward to that.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
I am too.
Speaker 1 (17:48):

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Nick. Before the break, we were talking about the.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Situation with Broncos outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoyt, and I thought.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
This text was interesting from the seven to one nine.
If you want to get involved in the show, you can.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Text us on the Common Spirit Health text line at
five six six nine zero.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
This is Pat from Monument.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
I went face to face with a very very large
TSA agent at DIA. He was being rude to my
wife and to my daughter, and I don't take very
kindly to that. I did not raise my voice, but
I did not back down, and I told him that
he was acting like a blank hole. Thank you for
the self censoring there, And he did not like that
and decided to turn and face me and with his
(19:05):
very very large size try to intimidate me, which I
don't intimidate very easily.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Needless to say, I am no longer on the TSA
Early check in list, but I can live with that.
But he definitely had an attitude.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
Well once a given, I can understand those types of
situation being very stressful situation TSA security.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
And everyone's trying to do their job. But at the same.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
Time you need to exercise restraint and decency and respect
as it pertaining to people. I've seen it in situations
where you're just walking around there's something that might have happened,
and the cops tell you move along. It's like, I'm
not doing anything. This is free space, this is a
free country. I told you to check, but it's like,
(19:52):
that's what happens. Sometimes some people don't, and I don't
want to generalize again, but we all have been been
in through situation.
Speaker 5 (19:59):
We know some people who have.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
But it's authority. Some people can't handle a position of power.
They feel as though they have to use that position
of power to trust other people.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
And like you said before the break, we're all human,
three people with respect.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yes, yeah, that's as easy as that.
Speaker 4 (20:16):
So if you say bark some four letter words at me,
I might return the favor.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Oh, this heavy talk makes me ready for a drink.
Let's get to the NFL six pack. It is time
for the NFL six path.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
I'm going to tread insight, insight information you can't find
anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
I know the top six NFL headline what.
Speaker 5 (20:41):
Today?
Speaker 6 (20:42):
Tom Pelisero with the NFL Network reported that the Green
Bay Packers Troy Vincent, when he came forward, didn't name
the team. Tom Pelasero very quickly out of the team,
reporting that the Green Bay Packers submitted a potential rule
change that would ban the controversial touch push play that
they Philadelpia Eagles is to have popularized. Do you think
(21:03):
they should ban this play or do you think the
efforts to ban it are a little saw?
Speaker 5 (21:08):
The efforts to ban.
Speaker 4 (21:09):
It isself is just the fact that teams would not
come up with an ideal way to actually stab it.
There's more to this topic that Grant and I get
into more tomorrow, but I think this is more about
nothing at all.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Yeah, I thought I've been Jim and Albright said it
perfectly on KOA Sports earlier today.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
My answer is going to be short and sweet, just
what he said.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
You can't ban a play just because someone's really good
at it.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (21:35):
I know people don't like Cam Newton really around here
because of the whole twenty fifteenth thing, But I don't know.
I like his attitude back then of you know, if
you don't like me dancing on, you don't let me
score exactly tu Along with Shador talking about how he's
not going to be throwing at the combine, notable prospects
Ashton Gente and Abdua Carter, projected to be maybe the
(21:58):
number one pick in this year's also will not be
working out at this year's combine. Does this news change
how you guys feel about the Broncos potentially drafting Ashal
genty and does it potentially make it? It doesn't potentially
change how you feel about the players at the top
of this draft like Abdual Carter.
Speaker 5 (22:15):
No, it doesn't.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
It is like dating someone who is a brunette and
all of a sudden she dyes her hair blonde. All
of a sudden, you're not going to fall out of
favor with her. No, absolutely not. I mean players decide
not to work out. These are typically your top tier players,
so they have the right to do this, and this
is probably the only time in their career. Well they
will be able to stand on business say you know what,
(22:37):
I'm not.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
Doing that today.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Yeah, in a position of power at this one moment
in their career. And I know we're going to get
into this more tomorrow on the show. But no, I
don't have any issue with this, and it does not
affect the way I view any of these prospects because
the tape doesn't lie. You put on the tape, You
see a guy, see how he plays in game action.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
That's all you need to know about a player.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
The measurables are ice and like Ben said when we
had him online from the Combine earlier, yes, these may
draw attention to certain players that aren't the top prospects
because they maybe they had played at a smaller school,
maybe that the gms haven't seen the tape on this guy,
and maybe those astronomical numbers that they put out at
the Combine will make them take a second look. But
(23:20):
all you need to see from top prospects like Carter
and Hunter and Shador look at the tape.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
That's all you need.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Three.
Speaker 6 (23:31):
Nfone Network at ESPN, with US soon to enter free agency,
have released their lists of the top available free agents
in this year's class. Russell Wilson is ranked fifty fourth
overall and as the number four quarterback by NFL Network,
notably behind the Jamis Winston, Justin Fields, and Sam Darnold,
while ESPN has him as the number five quarterback behind
(23:52):
Sam Darnald, Justin Fields, Jacoby Brissett, and Daniel Jones. Do
you think analysts are now too low on Russell Wilson
or do you think or just finally catching.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Up to his the client?
Speaker 4 (24:03):
Well, I know one person who may be high on
Russell Wilson's decline, and that's one O Zach Singer.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
Yeah, question exactly.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Oh, they're finally catching up with the decline.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
You can always tell where a person is leaning based
on how they kind of prep the question. You know what,
here's what I think it was happening with Russ. It's
the same thing that happened with any player who's played
a long time in this league. You are ways compared
at the back end of your career to the person
you were at the front end, and those two.
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Things don't mesh. You're not the same person, now, do you.
Speaker 4 (24:37):
I think that there's still something left in the tank
for russ absolutely, but it's going to be very difficult
for him to find the landing spot because now that
pool starts to now dry up because a lot of
teams already have their quarterbacks in place.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Yeah, and with us Matthew Stafford news, maybe he's looking elsewhere,
even though Ben thinks.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
That is fake news.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
But I think Russell Wilson definitely still has something in
the tank. No, he is not the player he once was,
like he played in Seattle.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
He can't run like that anymore.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
But I'd love to see him get one more year
in Pittsburgh and the second year with Mike Tomlin and
Arthur Smith in that offense.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
I think they could be a playoff team.
Speaker 6 (25:12):
Yeah, Zach Segers, Yeah, you know, I don't know what
you guys are talking about. All I see is the
Broncos paying him, maybe though he divorce to a playoffs
or Speaking of the Broncos, DJ Jones is the only
Broncos free agent to appear on NFL networks Listen appearing
at the number ninety seven spot of one hundred and
(25:32):
one players they ranked. Do you think j DJ Jones
is Denver's most consequential free agent and are there any
other potential departures that concern you?
Speaker 4 (25:42):
Well, you know what, anything can happen at any time,
it's to play with the team. For Peter time, two
or three years, they started to assess where they want
to go in and maybe in a different direction. Understanding
now that Sean Payton is now the head coach of
the Denver Broncos and he may see something entirely different
for the team. Also, here's the thing that kind of
removes the veteran player, age, injury and.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
How much is going to cost.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
So if the Broncos figure that they can't go out
and get a younger player, they're definitely gonna do that.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
Yeah, And that's sad to see because I think DJ
Jones is a great defensive lineman.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
I've loved him as in his time here with the Broncos.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
But I think the linebacker position, I know you want
to add to it this offseason, but I don't want
to lose any of those guys in that room. And
Cody Barton, you know someone that was signed as basically
a special teamer. He came out and got his chance
on the field, just much like you did in your
play playing career. And I think he's a guy you
want to keep around here.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
I really want to keep Cody Barton.
Speaker 6 (26:39):
I'd love to pair him up, maybe with a guy
like Nick Bolden from the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
Here we go.
Speaker 5 (26:43):
You got to the beginning my Alex singleson.
Speaker 6 (26:45):
Now you know Alex Singleton, wrong side of thirty off
an ACL lots of that's a young man's mind right there.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
Kay can be freed up.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
I've moved up from whoever it is. They need to
fix that room.
Speaker 6 (26:58):
The difference between every other player on the Broncos defense
being targeted since December and the linebackers being targeted in
the passing game is the same as the passer rating
difference between Joe Burrow and Gardner minsheet.
Speaker 5 (27:09):
How dare you, Zach Seegers.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
That's a good start, right.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
A guy gets injured right there, just one little injury
and all of a sudden just.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
What injury?
Speaker 4 (27:20):
I mean?
Speaker 6 (27:20):
I think it's also the two years of play that pursuited.
They see there, the one and a half. What the
one hundred and fifty tackles a year, I think, being
top five in the NFL and its tackle rate.
Speaker 5 (27:31):
Each of those also from on.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
The wrong side of thirty. You know how old Alex
Singleton is. How is thirty one?
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Thirty one?
Speaker 2 (27:39):
That's how I know I'm getting old.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Five.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
The Dallas Cowboys said they'll let Trey Lance explore the
free agent market this offseason, after trading quite a few
picks for him from the San Francisco forty nine ers.
Do you think Trey Lance draw any serious interest in
the wake of Darnold and Baker's reclamation projects or and
do you think he should draw any serious interest?
Speaker 4 (28:09):
Yes, absolutely, because that's the one thing that the league
is short of, are you know, starting quarterbacks? But I
look at Trey Lance as being a Bible option at
the number two position, and that's a position that a
lot of teams struggle to fill that role with adequate
play that they feel confident in. So I think that
they will be some takers out there for a guy
(28:31):
like Trey Lance and kick the tires on because he's
not a bad quarterback. It's just like being in the
right system with the right pieces around him.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Yeah, and let's not forget he was what the number
three pick in the draft.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
When the forty nine ers traded up for him.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
Kyle Shanahan, who most people view as an offensive genius
in this league, obviously saw something in him.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
I think Trey Lance just needs some reps, man. I mean,
he's only twenty four years old.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
On the right side of thirty according to Zach Seekers,
and he just hasn't had a chance to get in
the game very I would love to see him go
to a bad team, maybe like the New York Giants,
get a chance to compete with a draft pick and
see if he can really do something in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
I agree.
Speaker 6 (29:10):
I thought he you know, he didn't get it played
much for the Cowboys this season, with Cooper Crush mainly
getting the nod. But when he did get out there,
I thought he looked pretty impressive.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
How can someone tell me that I'm not an experienced
driver and I can't drive if you're not give me
an opportunity to get behind the will to drive exactly?
Speaker 5 (29:25):
Come on, man, let's be tell honest.
Speaker 6 (29:28):
Six Travis Hunter is set to work out among the
defensive backs at this week's NFL scouting Combine that said,
he is reportedly planning on doing some of the wide
receiver drills as well. Do you think that primary listing
as a defensive back reflects how the NFL perceives him
(29:49):
entering this year's draft. Where do you think Travis Hunter
should play at the next level? And how realistic is
it for him to play both ways at a high
snap like he did at CU.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
It's not real listen, to play at a high level
with all those snaps. It's just very difficult in the NFL.
But I do believe that some team that drafts him,
you're gonna get extraordinary player who has those capabilities. And
let be totally transparent about what the NFL is. The
NFL is not trying to give you more money. This
whole deal with the comebin is to take money away
(30:22):
from you to expose weaknesses. So of course a team
wants him to play dB because if you play wide receiver,
guess what, gotta pay him.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
More money than you gotta make more money.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
And you know, I think I think it's realistic for
him to come in right away and play every snap
as a corner back and be a lockdown corner and
get twenty twenty five snaps on offense.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
I think people are just scared of this in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
The NFL is, in my opinion, has always been stuck
in their ways for way too long. And Travis Hunter
has shown that he can do it on the highest
level of college football. Why not give him a chance
to go out there and do something that's never been done.
Let's see something special and he's actual kind of player.
Speaker 6 (31:01):
And if he's the cornerback that everyone's hyping him up
to be, he shouldn't see a whole lot of contact.
What do we say about cornerbacks when they're doing their job,
We're not saying their name a whole lot.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
Look at PS two this last year, perfect example, and he.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
Can lay the wood, you know.
Speaker 6 (31:13):
I think he had the lowest mistackle rate of any
cornerback in college football last year.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
You can do it when necessary, but.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
He's the type of lockdown guy that hopefully the ball's
not going his way much and you feel good, Trodden
now maybe as your number three wide receiver.
Speaker 5 (31:25):
You guys know how this works.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Right the swing and two players eleven offense, eleven on defense.
Speaker 5 (31:31):
We're going to run the ball.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
That's you to see if you could tackle, and then
if you make the first cycle, guess what we're gonna do?
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Run it again.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
Well, okay, some teams don't do that.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
No, Well, are you talking about anyone in particularly you're
talking about?
Speaker 4 (31:45):
Now?
Speaker 5 (31:46):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 2 (31:47):
Okay, I say anything.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
No, But I'd love to see Travis Hunter get a
chance to play both sides of the ball. And like
you said, it's not realistic to play every single snap
like he did in college on both sides of the ball,
but man, what a story that would be if he's
out there as your number two or three wide receiver,
certain sets for him every game that you know, this
is your option to be in the game on offense,
(32:08):
and let's see what we can do.
Speaker 5 (32:10):
I think he gets overlooked.
Speaker 6 (32:11):
It wasn't necessarily Dion's plan to play him one hundred
and twenty snaps per game, but he was going to
have a package on offense and he was going to
be in every down cornerback.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
And then they played that first game.
Speaker 6 (32:22):
Against TCU and he would think, this guy's the best
wide receiver on the football field. I really don't want
to take him off. NFL head coaches want to save
their jobs. They want to win games. I don't think
there's going to be many NFL teams that feel comfortable
not treating Travis Hunter like one of the top three,
definitely one of the top four receivers on their team.
Speaker 5 (32:38):
You want to win.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Put Booby in one of my favorite lives of any
movie of all time, Friday Night Lights, Nick, where do
you think, real quick, before we have to hit a
break here, where do you think Travis Hunter ends up
getting drafted?
Speaker 5 (32:51):
I'm going to say he doesn't get out of the
top five.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
It would be ridiculous to see him not taken early
off the board. And some of some of the my
drafts I saw had him going to the New England Patriots,
which is not I like that, Which is not a
bad place for him to go.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Well, Mike Rabel as a new head coach, and that
may be a place where he would get to get
some options to play both sides.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
May that's a whole lot better than going to Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Yeah, trust me, I'm from Ohio.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
I know Rabel did a lot of it while.
Speaker 6 (33:21):
He was playing, so like he said, he might be Ah,
that's right, I forgot.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Rabel caught a couple of touchdowns from Tom Brady.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
And talk about a fun cornerback, Pero.
Speaker 6 (33:28):
I mean, Christian Gonzalez got a lot of all Pro
love alongside Stanna. He's a young up and comer on
a rookie deal. You pair those two, that's just good
fun to watch. That would be fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
And the words of Mark Johnson, he's an.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
Alien though he's a freak, he's the best player in
college football.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
We'll see where Travis Hunter ends up, and we'll check
in with Ryan and Ben the rest of the week
from the NFL Combine.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
When we come back, one of our favorites.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Here on Broncos Country Tonight, Bremasis, gonna see if we
can break Nick Ferguson down, get him to cry about
a movie. We're gonna do that, nex Don Broncos Country
Night right here on KOA A fifty a M ninety
four to one FM.
