Broncos Country Tonight.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm your host Grant Smith, filling in for Benjamin Albright
as he is covering the NFL Combine live from Indianapolis
all week with Ryan Edwards, the OG of Broncos Country
Tonight in here with Nick Ferguson. Thanks to Ben for
joining us earlier in the show, as well as Jerry Shimmel.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
If you missed any of that, you can find it
on the.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Free and totally redesigned iHeartRadio app where you can also
set KOA as a preset, just like you do in
your car, and you can also set my podcast as
a preset.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Taking it for granted.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
The podcast had some great guests on, including Benjamin Albright,
Jerry Shimmel, and the man sitting beside me, Nick Ferguson.
The latest episode with your Broncos Sideline reporter Susie Wargen
would love for you to take a listen to that,
but we're going to head out to the KOA Common
Spirit Health Hotline and bring on one of our favorite
ladies in the Denver sports world, someone who hosts two

(00:52):
great podcasts herself, Believe in the Broncos and the Let's
Talk Broncos Pod.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Bre mastis Bree, how are you tonight, France.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
I am so happy to hear your voice. I feel
like it's been forever, and I know Nick is there
as well. I'm beaming here to ear and thank you
so much for having me on tonight.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
All right, Brie, I have to ask the question because
I know Grant brought it up and I put it
to tweet out. So if you haven't seen it, go
and check it out on Instagram and X Nick Ferguson
out the score twenty five while you laughing, Gregs.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
I know where this is going and it just makes
me giggle.

Speaker 5 (01:28):
All right.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
So the whole thing we had this conversation about movies
that make you cry and the reason I made the
video because I've seen a lot of emotional driven movies,
but I have never been moved to cry. Now, I
will give you this caveat because I thought for years,
and I've been accused, you know, by women updated in

(01:49):
the past.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
And maybe rightly accused that my tear.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
Ducks have officially dried up. So are there any movies
that you would recommend that eh may kind of make
one's waterworks turn on?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Oh goodness, guys, I love the Grant starts to laugh
at this question, as those my tears would bring him joy.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Next tears would bring me joy, not yours. Bree.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Well, thank you so much for providing that clarity here.
But I feel like everything makes me cry. I know.
I responded to Nick's tweet about a specific Marvel movie
that being Guardians of the Galaxy three. It had me
sobbing from start to finish. And it was so innoculous
to the idea that that's the one that would make
me so obsessed. But the little animals and the little

(02:38):
freakish like islands of misfit animal being tortured, it just
it makes me weepy. And I don't know what happened.
I don't know if it was just something that overtook
me watching that movie. But I promise you, from start
to finish sobbing. I sworn when I left the theaters.
Honorable mentions, Uh, you know, the all eleven, Fast and

(02:59):
Furious movie. What I have to I have to provide
a caveat here. You know, I specifically stay away from
heavy subjects into your jerkers for this reason. So I
got to find a way to have that like emotional
release somehow. But there's always something they work in there.
You're going to laugh and say that it's not the
film that you are used to critiquing. But there's some

(03:20):
hard wrenching moments in those films.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
If you told me that when Paul Walker passed and
they had that little ending scene about that, now, yes, yes,
But any other parts of Fast and Furious.

Speaker 5 (03:39):
No, how are you crying? And Fast and FEUs movies.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
There's love stories and their survival and their family. I mean,
that's the most important one.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Nick.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
You cannot discount the importance of family here, So I
want you to when you do a rewatch, which I'm
sure all of us do. Maybe it's just me looks
for those really pure jerking moments in the Fast and
Serious franchise. I'm just I'm just putting out there.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Well, in the words of Dom Toretto, what's real as family.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
You don't turn your back on your family.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
See. I just tuned in to see Fast Cars.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
There's depths of Vin Diesel.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Nick, come on, man, one more, one more movie before
we get to Sobracos talk. I don't know if either
of you guys have seen this yet, but it's recently
new movie and I was thinking about what movies made
me cry recently because I'm a I'm a man in
touch with my emotions, unlike the Nick Well, I'm just saying, man,
grown men cry, that's okay. But a movie that I

(04:35):
watched recently was a real pain with Jesse Eisenberg and
Kieran Culkin. Have either of you seen that?

Speaker 5 (04:41):
A real pain?

Speaker 3 (04:42):
No? But it's on my watch list.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Oh man, get ready, get your tissues ready. It's No
Fast and the Furious Breed. But I think it may
get your tears rolling.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
No, I have to avoid it like the plague.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Well, let's stop thinking about crying here on Broncos Country.
Tonight we'll get to so Bronc because you host two
great podcasts, Believe in the Broncos and let's talk Broncos
And what are your thoughts in the Broncos off season?
What are you looking for for them to add to
this roster to make the next step with bow Nicks
and Shop and Peyton next year.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Well, you had me smiling when I got on the show.
I'm going to continue to smile as we talk Broncos
because they have all the draft picks available to them
in the cap space right in the middle of the pack.
They're comfortable owners who have the ability to lean into
cash because they know that cap limit is all kind
of a miss. And we're not going to get too
much into that, but a head coach and a general
manager that are on the same page, and the Peyton

(05:37):
and Peyton and the franchise QB. So I think the
Broncos are looking for a really highly impactful off season.
It's hard not to be a full full to the
brim with optimism here, but I'm hoping they go all
in on getting the run game up to speed because
defenses right now currently are not preoccupied with the idea

(05:58):
of the ground game for the for Broncos, and I
think it's a huge problem. It's going to impact those development,
it's going to impact the offense's ability to be efficient,
and it lacks explosiveness. And that's been kind of the story.
Even through a winning season, you rack up ten wins,
and yet most of Bronco's country and most of the nation,
and everyone talking about it here in Denver knows that

(06:19):
it lacks something. So I'm hoping in the draft or
in draft and free agency double dipping with a huge
improvements in the run game. Specifically running backs obviously for
this team, but you can't discount needing to add on
the offensive side with the tight end and a wide
receiver that has blocking capabilities, because I think that goes
overlooks a little bit, so attacking free agency with strategy,

(06:43):
which I know Sean Payton has been touting all along
Radio Row when he was out there for the Super Bowl.
And I know there's a couple of players that Broncos
country is extremely excited about in the draft, but it's
best player available, like some swings in free agency, and
don't let the trenches go by the wayside, because we've
gotten a little comfortable with our offensive line looking as
good as it has. But on the defensive side of

(07:05):
the ball, you've got a couple of departures. The DJ
Jones were here the most. I think it's hard not
to speculate that the Broncos are I'm a replacement in
the draft that you need a Day one starter, and
just because of that production Alan, I think there's a
couple of moves, but they have all of the space
available to do this, and that's why I'm not too
worried about how it plays itself out. That's where in

(07:27):
the draft and then really hitting on those free agents
that you can. I don't I don't want to hear
the too many big swing moves going to take away
from the impact of that. But there's one in general.
I think you're going to ask me about that, so
I'll save that for them.

Speaker 5 (07:42):
Well, you know, your.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
Counterpart, Zach Seegers, was saying some blasphemous stuff early on
when we're talking about the linebacker position, so great brought
up you know, well, the Broncos can make some upgrades
of linebacker Zach Segers, Mitch and you know Nick Bolton,
which I'm.

Speaker 5 (07:59):
A huge fan.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
I was a huge fan of him when he came
out of college. But then I asked Zach about Alex
Singleton and then he just kind of said some things
that like, well almost like, Zach, I mean, Alex Singleton
was like last year's news and I'm like, wait a minute,
don't forget that this dude was a super due when
it came to tackle.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
Now all of a sudden, you want to.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Throw him out with the bath water, Like, come on, Brie,
tell me something.

Speaker 5 (08:22):
I know the Broncos need to get better at the
linebacker position.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Well, are we at a point where we're thinking like, well,
I'm not thinking like Zach seekers I'll let me speak
for himself that the Broncos to now think about moving
on from Alex Singles.

Speaker 5 (08:34):
Tell me Zach is out of his mind.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
I don't know if you're going to get that for me,
But I don't know. Singleton has probably gone. I think
he's probably gone after this season, given the injury and
given the production. I'm not saying he's a bad player,
but coming off of injury, I know that it's important
for the linebackers, specifically on the inside there to have
a lot of ability to be plugged into special teams
developing up from the youth. He is getting a little

(08:59):
long in the two. Not saying there's anything wrong about
a Singleton, but I like Tody Barton. I like the
idea of grabbing, grabbing, grabbing cap free agent. I don't
think Bond is going to be available that Eagles seem
to be wanting to retain there. But well, it's a
great runner up there. It's it's a smart move. Uh,
it's a You're getting a higher ability for that position

(09:22):
in that positional group to develop, and I think that
that's what the Bronco should be doing at that position
in general, but also you could be looking into the
fourth round for a guy like Shamar James from Florida.
A lot of tackles ability to also play into the
FAC game there. And I'm not saying Alex Singleton can't
do all of those things and do them well. It

(09:43):
just might be time to move on, especially given that
traumatic of an injury. I don't know if I agree,
though Zach likes to get a little crazy. They're talking
about him not having ability to bring up the Broncos
defense in any way next season. I don't think that's true.
I think that he's a little harsh on that aspect
when it comes to Alex Singleton.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
Maybe a little harsh, but I honestly I'm thrilled.

Speaker 6 (10:06):
This has been a sensitive point in Brie and my
friendship and now hearing her kind of come over to
my side. I feel like the Emperor in episode six
watching Lukes right down Darth Vader, like, yes, but they
hate flow through you.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
Briez So the thirty.

Speaker 6 (10:19):
One year old off Aco who is a sib and
coverage and has been near the top of the league
in miss tackle right each of the past two seasons you.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
Were selling a little bit pre injury, though, Zach, So,
I think you were a little crazy. Then he's still.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Crazy now he's still crazy now, Brie want to I
don't want to date you, but I think all of
us besides Seegers are on the wrong side of thirty
according to Zach, so maybe that's just some some youth
bias there.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
I think you're right there. Thanks for flashing my driver
life problem.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
I did want to get your thoughts on this so
called joker position that Sean Payton seems to be obsessed
with this term this offseason. What are some of the
players out there in free agency or maybe via trade
that would be available for the Broncos to fill that
joker role that Sean Payton wants to fill so badly.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
I love that we've all become obsessed with it, and
I know the Denver Nuggets fandom that nation is highly
upset with us for using that term out of context
and ad nauseum because it's become the hot top topic
and hot button item here for Broncos country. I hate
saying it, but we have to talk about it because
it comes up so frequently. Running back tight end everyone

(11:33):
wants to take a player from the draft or free
agency and drop one in the bucket for what they
think that joker is going to be. And I understand
it's all speculative from this point of who's going to
add that spark to the offense. But I think that's
where we run into trouble here is we think it's
going to be one individual player where you look at
him and you put the jay over his face and
you say that's the guy, that's the dude. You got

(11:54):
in trouble with it when you try to do it
with Greg Gilsiic Marvin Minmen's being the type of player
to really have a lot of versatility and variability in
his game has been interesting to see. But again, you
can't slap the Joker name on an individual because in
my head, this is a development and an evolution in
a player that's going to happen by it. Maybe it's
a free agent and maybe the draft prospect, and maybe

(12:15):
it's a tight end in the draft that's going to
take two and a half to three years to fully
develop into the joker role that you want to see.
So I like the caveat things with having lower expectations
and maybe not get too conflated with the idea that
the joker role has to be filled right now, and
maybe just look to see who grows in from a
young and hungry roster into that position to kind of

(12:36):
earn that role. And maybe it's the old school mindset,
maybe it is because I'm on the wrong side of thirty.
Whether I think that that the role is going to
come from a very organic Oh, let's watch this individual
develop through Champaigne's offense, how they match with a Bone
Nix and what they are able to contribute moving forward.
But that is the easy answer. The other one would

(12:57):
be like a Juwan Johnson, You got a tight end,
and who's going to be able to come in and
fill that role nicely? And I know that there's that
one game out there and everyone's hoping that Taysom Hill
makes the turnover? Is that the joker that we're all
looking for. I don't want to spend too much time
hoping that one individual fills this role and fills it
to the expectation that we've built up for because it

(13:19):
feels like a mirage in the desert at this point.
They haven't had that tool or that weaponry for Bonix,
and so instead of focusing on the joker, I want
to focus on the well balanced offense that the Broncos
have the opportunity to build in this very optimistic offseason.

Speaker 5 (13:36):
All Right, brit, I just want to shareup gears for
just a second.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
We had an opportunity to talk about this weekend's game,
the Nuggets and the Lakers.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
And the Nuggets, you.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
Know, they went on to run right before All Star Break.
They had a great record going into that break, but
it just seem as though when you look at their
record against teams over five.

Speaker 5 (13:55):
Hundred, it doesn't look that great.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
Now me, I'm not one to panic and jump off
the ship, but I know that the Nuggets need to
do some things to get better. When you look at them,
what standpoint do or what side of the face that
you stand on are you standing on the panic?

Speaker 5 (14:11):
Time to panic? Get the red button or you know what?

Speaker 4 (14:14):
This is just another speed bump and the Nuggets pursuit
to another championship.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Nick, I've been panicking since the start of the season
here for the Denver Nuggets, and it's not necessarily because
I think they don't have what's in it, what's within themselves.
Yokic being a three time MVP is not something that
I want to discount when it comes to this team.
But there is a little bit of a concern when
it comes to a Jamal Murray. Slow start right in
the long run doesn't matter if they win another championship,

(14:43):
maybe not, maybe so, But the longer it takes for
him to get up to speed, it's taking away from
you know, Yokic being able to play at the top
of his capacity. Here you've got an Aaron Gordon who
had to play her in his place, and yet he's
still truly reaching his potential as a shooter, and he's
been playing some of his best basketball. So is that
challenging the rest of the team to perform better? I

(15:05):
have a little of a pessimistic lens when it comes
to Denver Nuggets right now, but it's the first half
of the season we know, meaningfully, as they continue to
be sort of in that second place, rotating out with
the Grizzlies combination there, I think that panicking is a
really strong word, but being very reserved and how excited

(15:25):
I can get about this team is probably where I'm at.
Because you have a almost ten game win streak that
the Nuggets were chasing, and that they ended it in
such a pivotal game against the Lakers, who were on
an eight game living streak as it is, so I
am a little bit panicked by this game. I know
Tonight's it's going to be a turning point, is going

(15:46):
to be a get back game. I don't love the
idea that in such a competitive time of the year,
you know you're past the All Star Game, and you're
getting absolutely out coached and outplayed. The Nuggets couldn't even
match the intensity. And I think Jada Retick needs a
lot of credit when it comes with because he absolutely
absolutely ran a coaching clinic against them. But the Lakers,

(16:08):
that combination of Luke and Lebron they had more and
and and the rest of the team was able to
score more points. So they're missing a spark, and a
spark isn't something necessarily that I think this team is missing.
So what is the problem here? Struggling to match the
team's intensity, especially one that's still figuring out their chemistry,

(16:28):
leads me to be in a very apprehensive mood when
it comes to the Nuggets that if the MP three
in Nikole Jokic can stack triple doubles like a madman.
I don't understand why the rest of the team can't
match that, but if he's having a down game, it
extremely changes the energy there for a lot of the
core players. And you need to figure out who who

(16:48):
that five is going to be. Is at Westbrook, is
at Brown. There's more questions than there are answers, But
I think it would be really crazy to discount this
team knowing what they can do in the back half
of the season.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah, I still don't think anyone wants to face the
Nuggets in a seven game series, but you mentioned they
need a spark. Maybe they need to go out and
sign Jared Statham to their active rosters.

Speaker 5 (17:15):
Thanks so much for the time to night.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
I thought i'd leave you with.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
That a woman whose knowledge knows no bounds. Thank you
so much for the time as always, and we'll look
forward to having you in the studio here.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
Good soon.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
I appreciate guys so much. Have great evenings you too.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Free Masist, host of the Believe in the Broncos podcast
and a co host with our very own Zach Seekers
on the Let's Talk Broncos podcast.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
Nick.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
We got cu Buffs basketball coming up. Here at the
top of the hour, and bre did mention that the
Nuggets had to get right game tonight. They did end
up beating the Pacers in Indy one to one sixteen.
With our very own Bryan Edwards in the Broncos suite
with Sean Payton. What are your thoughts on the SeeU
Buffs going up against Kansas this evening.

Speaker 4 (18:00):
It's going to be enough another tough outing for the Buffs.
I mean, Kansas is trying to keep everything on the
right path because marsh Madness is around the corner.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
I can't wait, man.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
Yes, and and they don't.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
Want to lose that momentum against the CU team that's.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
Been playing pretty tough. But you know, on.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
Occasion, it's happened to teams in different sports. Can you
play your best ball against some of the best teams?

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Yeah, And they played c Utah or they played Ku
tough and Alan and what's it called fog?

Speaker 5 (18:31):
Yes, the fog something like that.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
The fall they covered the spread.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
They looked pretty good up there, so maybe they can
sneak out another big twelve win. They won two out
of their last three. I mean, let's look on the optimistics.

Speaker 4 (18:42):
I am, but I'm sure Tad Boyle is not telling
his team Okay, well, we just want to make sure
that we we do right by the spread, that's the
only thing. No, they want to show that they can
win some of these games, knowing as that they're back
in this conference for the first for the first time,
and why so they want to go out there. They
want to play well in games like this where you know, Vegas,

(19:07):
I think what they got Kansas's favorite obviously his favorite
seven points.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Seven points.

Speaker 4 (19:12):
So you want to go out there and you want
to put your best foot forward because now you take
away all this other stuff from Kansas, but you tell
everyone else, look get ready because we came to play
too as well.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Yeah, and you mentioned Kansas struggles as of late. They
lost by like forty a couple nights ago, they did,
and then bounce it back with a forty point win
against Oklahoma State. Kansas was ranked in the AP pole
for eighty straight weeks, second longest active streak in D
one until this last pole that just came out.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
Well, that tells you right there, this is a team
that can bounce back. So now you have to see
if the see you Buffs and tab Boyle can actually
bounce back and still want against a pretty decent Kansas team.

Speaker 5 (19:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Do you know who has the longest active streak of
being ranked in the ape pole in college basketball?

Speaker 4 (19:57):
No?

Speaker 5 (19:57):
Who?

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Houston? One hundred to two Street weeks.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
In Houston is not one of those teams that were
traditionally used to hearing as being one of the blue
bloods of college basketball.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
No, they had what it was called fly five slam
a jama back in the day. But they've got a
resurgence under Kelvin Sampson, and I like what they're doing
down there.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
They're leading the Big Twelve right now.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
They look like they're gonna win the Big Twelve, top time,
top five team in the country. It'll be interesting to
see what March Madness looks like as we have some
first round and second.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
Round games here in Denver this year July. Yeah, I
might have.

Speaker 5 (20:32):
To go try to check those out.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Well, I'll hopefully be getting a media pass from our overlord,
David Tepper. But we'll see. In their words, offsty Fatwater.
Thanks thanks Agoin, Nick. This was a lot of fun tonight, man.

Speaker 5 (20:45):
All Right, we'll do it again tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Buffs basketball coming up next, taking on Kansas.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
We'll talk to you tomorrow on Broncos Country Tonight
