Speaker 1 (00:00):
Broncos Country Tonight. I'm your host to night, Grant Smith
trying to get my mike to get in front of
my face. I don't know what's going on with it's
saying it's.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
A little loose nick.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Yeh See.
Speaker 4 (00:11):
Now you're sitting in the spot that I normally sit in,
and normally Ryan Air would sit in that spot before
I get there, And it's always loosey goosey with that
particular mike.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
So definitely be careful you're gonna rip it off.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Just hold it in my hand the rest of the show.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
I'll bet that happened to me working in the industry
for a while. The mike moving it around, it broke,
So I hold it tily, show like I was the
lead singer of a band or something.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Yeah, you and you and Benjamin Albright and a boy band.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Well, no Albright by himself with his shiny Golodory shirts.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
And Benjamin Albright usually sitting in the seat. He's been
working with Ryan Edwards covering the Combine all week in Indianapolis,
and he will be back tomorrow, but not on this show.
He'll be on KOA Sports once again, and we'll get
to have Brie mastas sitting in here with you tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (01:08):
Love.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Brie got a chance to chat with her earlier this week,
and always good when she's in here at hosting.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, it's always good to have Brion.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
I know.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
There was a compensation that was kind of going back
and forth between Brie and one our own, Zach Seegers,
where Zach I believe this tould be paraphrasing that there's
certain things he would love to say around Brie, but
he thinks that if he does, she's gonna result in violence.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
And she explicitly said as much.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
And I would not mess with Bri.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Like me and Zach are not big men, you know, yes,
like we're skinny guys, and Brie I think she lift
some weights, you know, I think she could pummel both
of us.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Not all of us are former NFL athletes.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Some of us have to, you know, look for self
preservation another way. Right, Sometimes things are better left unsaid.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
This is different, man, because I don't know Breed to
be this type of person that for one Zach Seegers
is describing.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Zach Segers can get under anyone's skin.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
He's got that all bright Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
That I do. But hey, you know who who knew?
Uh Ellen DeGeneres was as evil as sheep? Attentially, are
you comparing one of.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Our favorite females in the Denver Sports.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
World, premaates us to Ellen DeGeneres.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
I didn't say that.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
That's kind of what you.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
I mean, you're on the board, so it is technically
on the record. She will be in in the studio tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
I'm saving that.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
That's why I'm out of here tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
By the way, Zach Seegers just published a great new
article up to our website, Kwacolorado dot com.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
We're going to talk with him tomorrow about that.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Even though he's off, he's gracious enough to come on
the air and talk about his article. Nick, have you
learned anything new from the combine today? Anything and the
rumors swirling, anything that peaked your interest?
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Well, the one thing that did peak my interest, man,
is these dudes are running fast like uber uber fast.
And I believe there is a linebacker. I think it's James.
Here's Junior out of Tennessee right four eight, No, four
four seven.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Damn that's what I ran.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
So I'm like, what is happening? What are they feeding
these kids?
Speaker 4 (03:32):
Now?
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Their biggest stronger faster.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
But that is where the game is progressively gone over
the past couple of years.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
And I feel so happy for a lot of these
young guys.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Who get a chance to experience the comebine and I
didn't get a chance to go even though I played
a decade.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
In this league.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
You're not at all not salty because guess what in
the end, you know, I played ten years to all
those evaluators who said that Nick Ferguson would make its
salt in your eye. But it's great to see these
guys come with a lot of energy. But it just
kind of gives you some of the a preview of
what this upcoming season could definitely look like, not just
(04:12):
for the Broncos, but just league wide.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yeah, and Zach Seegers puts together our six pack every
night when I'm.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
In here, and he's got a great question in the
six pack.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
I'll just tease it now about being drafted high or
if that compares to the MVP conversation that we had
last night or two nights ago.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
All these days, Newton comments, Yeah, all these days are
running together.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
I've been a busy man this week, Yes you have.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah, filling in for Robin Hart on KBCO from ten
am to three pm every day.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
It's been a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
We do a twenty nine songs in a row commercial
free there every afternoon and I love being a part
of that segment.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
If I didn't know any better, I would think that
you were Jamaican, right, And the reason I say that
is that you know, my family is from the Caribbean
and Jamaicans have.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
A lot of jobs.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
That's got so many different jobs that they that they do,
but they do it at a high level.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
So yes, you know, that's the first thing I thought
we talked about all the jobs.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
I was like, yeah, he maybe part times are making
I thought you were going to reference some weat smoking
or something.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
No, no, because when I said that, immlily you paused
for a second.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Where but yes, well, you know, they don't pay as
well as they used to in this industry.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
So the more things you can do, right, that's the
more you do.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
So well in that conversation there. If you want to
get involved in the conversation, go ahead and reach out
to us on the KOA Common Spirit Health Hotline or
Sorry text line five six six nine zero and uh
rip to Gene Hackman. Man, what a weird story coming
out of there. Santa Fe, New Mexico, him, his wife,
and his dog all found dead and they said that
(05:55):
they were dead for more than a.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Day when they found them.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
So, uh more details will come out about that, but
rip to a legend in the acting industry.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah, you know, that's kind of weird. My wife brought
it up to me.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
I was just like, well, that's kind of uncommon, the
first thing you think, and that situation is somewhat of
a ghast lead, right for to get like three people
or in the two people in.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
All different rooms.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Yes, so that.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Means that they were doing what they normally would do
on a given day and then just something destruck. And
then there was a report before I came in that
there was this kind of idea that there was some
pills somewhere inside the house where they're thinking, okay, well
maybe someone took some pills or whatever. But investigation is
still ongoing. But the first thing I thought about was
(06:42):
a lot of the movies that I've seen that Gene
Hackman was in, and there was one I just watched
this past weekend. It was Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Hackman,
and it was Unforgiven.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
I don't think I've ever seen that one.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
You've never seen Unforgiven.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
No a year did it come out.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
I have no idea when it came out, but it
is definitely one of those movies that you say, you
know what in your lifetime you have to see.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
It's like, oh, it's a western, yes, western.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
It was like John Wayne the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I'm looking at it right now. I'm definitely gonna watch.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
That is a movie you need to watch.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
But then I started thinking about other movies that he's
been in, like The Firm.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
He did a great job in that movie.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Mississippi Burning. It's another powerful movie. But the movie that's
kind of in like my top ten of all.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Time was the movie he was doing he.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
Played opposite gen Zel was Washington. I put something on
social media about this was Crimson Tide.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Oh yeah, that man.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
So many great movies, and sometimes when we think about actors,
we think about the awards that they received that kind
of defines their career. But for me, I mean, Gene
Hackman wasn't one of those guys who were nominated twenty
eight times and he's a five time Golden Globe or
Oscar winner, but he gave Oscar worthy performances every time
(08:10):
he touched he saw him on film, he touched the stage.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Someone weighing in on the text sign here five six
six nine ozero.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
If you want to join.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
In from the four to one three Royal ten and
bombs underrated movie.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yes, that's such a good movie.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yes, well, key good movie.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yeah, I think it's it only hits for certain people
that have a certain sense of humor. But man, what
a classic. And of course I always think about him
and the replacements as the head coach. Yes, and you
know with Shane Falco h Keanu Reeves playing quarterback like
that was one of my favorite movies as a kid.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
You know, the biggest thing when I look at you know, actors,
and when I say actors and both talking about both
men and women, is the level of range that they show.
Because sometimes those actors, just like athletes, you get tight
cast and well you can only do this one particular thing.
And I know you being a broadcast yourself, you know
some people might say, well, you know what, Grant is
just a producer. He can't be, he can't host. But
(09:05):
you've been hosted with me all this week. And this
is what I look for when I'm looking at like
my top actors, the range that they show. And Gene
Hackman is one of those guys that he could be
in a comedy like bird Cage, he could be in
a serious movie like the movie he was in with
Will Smith, Enemy.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Of the State, another great one.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
So the ability to show range, you know, leads to longevity.
And the same thing can be seen and said as
those who play in professional sports.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yeah, and the ability to know your role in a
certain film, you know. And of course we have another
person weighing in on the text line from the three
zho Three Hoosiers.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Of course that's a class that's true.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yeah, but you know, knowing your role like his role
in Bird Cage, where the movie wasn't about him, but
you still remembered his role and it added to the
overall film. And I think that's another thing that can
be said for professional athletes, you know, doing your job,
even if it's not the job, Like the conversation we
had about Javonte Williams last night and how I kind
(10:10):
of felt bad for him because he always had to
do all the dirty work.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Dirty work, but knowing your role and doing your role
to the best of your ability.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
And that was what he was on on screen, and
what Javonte Williams I guess.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Now is for the Denver Broncos.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
If he comes back, which George Peyton said, we played
that audio yesterday, maybe he will be back.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
Well, there's a strong possibility that Dvante could make you back.
And the greatest thing about life when you do anything,
no matter with the profession, is being validated, but also
feeling as though you are wanted. Right, There's nothing worse
than being at a place and feeling as though you're
(10:50):
pouring everything into your occupation and is not being reciprocated.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Like you want to be seen.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Everyone wants to be seen, whether it's being a professional
athlete an actor, or or working a regular job or.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Even being in a relationship. You want to be seeing.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
You want someone to validate you for everything that you give.
That's not to say that you want to walk around
twenty four seven someone patting you on.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
The back going that a boy.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
No, it's not that, but it's just like it's the
small things, right. You want individuals to be able to
recognize that. And I said this to you the other night.
I think if Javante heard those words, he's encouraged. Now
does that guarantee that he would be back with the Broncos.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
No, but it's encouraging.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
To know that this team sees you in a certain way,
even though statistically you were not able to produce the
way that you might have wanted to.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Yeah, and we heard from the tight ends today at
the NFL Combine as well. We're going to play you
a little bit of audio from a hometown kid, gunner Helm,
coming up here and just a little bit when we're
joined by the og of Broncos Country tonight, Ryan Edwards.
That'll be happening around seven o'clock. Man, so cool to
see kids like he was coached by Dave Logan at
(12:04):
Cherry Creek, and it's so cool to see kids that
you saw all their rise and then now you get
to see them entering the highest level of their chosen profession,
whether it be on the field or not. But to
see a kid like Gunner Helm who has a connection
here in Colorado. He's about to be a draft pick,
you know, some people have him going in the third round.
Benjamin Albright earlier today said he may slip to the
(12:26):
fourth or fifth round, which I don't see happening, but
you know, beens to his credit, he's usually right, even
though I hate to say that, but he is usually
right on these things. And it's cool to see a
guy like that that has that Colorado.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Connection making it to the highest stage.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Now, you know, it would be great if gun A
Heilm was to be drafted by the Denver Broncos. So
now you're talking about a full circle moment. He that
grew up in Denver, Colorado play with our station mat
Dave Logan only to be covered by Dave Logan every
(13:02):
single I mean, just imagine this, Okay, imagine.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
This Broncos country.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
We've we've heard Dave Logan's voice on multiple calls, even
when I played multiple calls.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
But could you imagine bow Niss to Gunner.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
Hell in the back of the end zone for thirty
yards and Dave Logan is on a.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Call, yeah, or we get the iconic you know, he
breaks free on a long play and we get to
here we go from Dave Logan, Like how cool of
the moment would that be? For Dave and for Gunner's family,
Like I'm sure they have to be Broncos fans I
would assume you know, everyone is here living in Colorado.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Well well, I mean I wouldn't assume.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
All of that everyone that is from Colorado.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Okay, yeah, lots of Tlans here who But yeah, I
think that would be such an awesome moment. I mean,
you don't see Dave get emotional too often, but if
you had a chance to coach a player, and he's
the one who moved him from wide receiver to tight end,
and if you you you had that career impact on
a kid, and now he's playing for the team that
(14:06):
you call the game sport, which also happens to be
his hometown team.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Like, I think he may get a little emotion. Probably
not on the.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Air because Dave's such a pro, but I'm sure when
I'm running those Broncos broadcasts, I'd get to hear some
cool stuff behind the scenes when the mics are down.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Of how much that would mean to him.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
See Daning is probably you know like me in a way,
when you start to get a little emotional, you get
that feeling in your body and go keep back in
their tears. We were talking was on there that might.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Have been off their.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Look cloudy with the Tanta be balls and cop terry crews.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
It's enough to make the Chrome man cry.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Not this, man, oh man, you're about to do it again.
You haven't cried crying from laughing so hard the other night. Yeah,
when we're talking about your kids and man, yeah, yeah,
I think that would be a very special moment for him, especially.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
In so many different ways because when you coming up
through the ranks as a player and you have.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
Your heart set on playing one specified position and.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Then all of a sudden, the coach.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Say, you know what, yeah, I think you'd be better here,
and you think like no, no, no, no, no, that's not
what I want to play.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
But then the coach moves you, and then you see.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Okay, well that now turns out to be the most
impactful thing in your career as a player, A decision
that a coach made that you did not want to do.
And that would be great for Gunnahelm to be back here.
I mean as a fan of Dave Logan what he's
done in high school sports, but more importantly just being
(15:42):
a fan of the Broncos organization. I mean, that is
a great story, right, and that story speaks of you know, Denver, Colorado,
and what that should say it would say to all
the kids who are competing in sports, in football here
in the Denver metro area, that it is true your
(16:04):
dream could come true if you put in the level
of work and when things look or seeing their darkest,
all you have to do is look for a little
glimmer of hope, little glimmer of hope, and work your
chill off, and you could possibly be one of those
guys walking across the stage giving Roger Goodell a high
five or a bear hug and say, you know what, Mom,
(16:27):
look at me.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
I made it.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
I made it, Mama, I made it. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
And speaking of great coaches, we talked to a little
college basketball last night with Clark Kellogg.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
If you missed that conversation, you can.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Find it at Koacolorado dot com or on the free
iHeartRadio app where you can set Broncoast Country Tonight or
KOA as a preset.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
I have done both.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
But Rick Pattino one of the best college basketball coaches
of all time. He made some history last night with
Saint John's win. He is now the first head coach
to win a regular season conference title at five different schools,
Boston University, Kentucky Louisville, Iona and now Saint John's with
a Big East title this year. They're ranked number seven
(17:09):
in the country. Can't wait for March Madness here in Denver.
Just got my press credential verified today, so I will
be down there covering.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
It for the station.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
But did you hear he's got a new documentary coming out.
I can't remember what it's called, but uh, seegers, if
you can look that up for me when I play
this audio. He had this halftime speech that has now
gone viral, and I want to play it for you
and then get your reaction on it.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
They game I'd be a basketball player, they did.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Every time he missed a shot, your game to flights.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
We don't care about you miss shots plays. You guys
keep blowing opportunity, pot opportunity, upont opportunity.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
You're like children with bad things happening.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
They started thinking it'd.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Be tougher you will.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
Where is your toughness? Where have you guys been raised?
Catch it so weak? Finally give up putting something that's
all right for you? How'd you know what adversity is
all about? That's a game on not a game of basketball.
You don't fuck get down with things.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
So wrong, you ain't gonna get cover.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Your whole life's gonna be adversity, what if dealing it?
Speaker 2 (18:20):
I got freaking goosebumps man listening to him talk? What
a what a speech? Like?
Speaker 1 (18:26):
How do you not want to go and run through
a brick wall after you hear that? And by the way,
thank you, Zach seekers. It's called Patino Red Storm Rising
as a documentary that's going to come out on Vice.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
But what were your thoughts on those comments?
Speaker 4 (18:39):
I saw that, and uh, I was taken back to
my high school days and how intense my high school
coach was, and then it was kind of fast forward
to my time being around you know, Bill Parcells and
the way that he coached. And it wasn't one of
those New Rodney speeches that either on high school coach
(19:02):
or Bill Parcells Gabe, but it was straight to the point,
and he didn't have to talk to you individually because
what he said.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
It seemed like he was talking to everybody.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
Yeah, it just it just seemed as though he was
talking to yous specifically, because you look at Roland, you're
talking to me and some guys in the room. But
sometimes that's what you want to do and understanding Patino
and the success on the collegiate level. From a basketball standpoint,
number of players that he helped actually make millionaires in
you know, going to the NBA. It speaks volumes. And
(19:31):
when you look at some of the players today, they
don't know what that is, right, They some of them
been coddled so much they don't know what that in
your face conversation is.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Like digging deep. And I'm not saying grant that you have.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
To be talking to a person when you're spitting all
in your faith, got hot mouth and all that you know,
you need to wish your wife is on your eyeglasses
something like that. No, it's just the fact of driving
home a point. Let's look, we need to go out there,
We need to take this game, and it's gonna it
depends on the guys in the room. Believe I don't
want another And you got to look at the gouts
you left in your right. How much are you believing
your brothers to go out there and make something happen? Right,
(20:06):
These are the games that you're gonna remember for the
remaining of your life. And you're also going to remember
because you didn't go out and you didn't put fourth
the best episode, dig deep right now and make something happen.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Yeah, that was perfectly said. I don't have anything to
add to that. We're going to be joined by Rick
Lewis when we come back on Broncos Country Night on
KOA fifty ninety four to one FM. And what the
funk we had Ryan Edwards, the og of Broncos Country Night,
scheduled to come on at seven oh five, but he
(20:37):
is a little under the weather, so we will pivot
and get our wet blanket on back tonight at seven
thirty five. So just a little programming note for you
out there, but we are going to head out to
the KOA Common Spirit Health Hotline and be joined by.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
Broncos color analyst Rick Lewis. Rick, how are you tonight?
Speaker 5 (20:55):
Hey? Grants? What the funks you are? Everywhere is all
the time. It's like you're trying to be Rick Lewis
two point zero.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Now, Well, you are my mentor in this business, and
you said you know, the more you can do, the
safer you are, so I am following that protocol.
Speaker 5 (21:14):
Well you listen. Well, yeah, just a few years ago
I was doing two live shows a day, calling Broncos games,
playing big band gigs at all the biggest venues. Even
I got sick of me.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Well hopefully not everyone's sick of me yet.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
Yeah. Yeah, now that's good. You're doing the right thing.
You know, to have a long career in this business,
do as many things as you can do, be as
diverse as possible. When they ask you, hey, what do
you think about doing this, Grant say, yeah, man, I'm
in Let's do it, you know. And you know, looking
(21:50):
back on it, I think it's really served me well
because I've literally done everything you can think of in
this business, from acting, stand up comedy, radio, TV, sports,
you know, and that's one reason why I'm still here.
So yeah, you're doing the right thing.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Well, speaking of doing everything and doing whatever is asked
of you, I have to ask this particular question. There's
a player from Texas, gunner Helm, and he is quite
familiar to this particular area. Before you came on, Brandon
was having this discussion about him, saying, well, how great
would it be for gunner Helm Cherry Creek, but also
(22:29):
your broadcast partner, Dave Logan if the Broncos were to
add gunner Helm to the Broncos roster, and you guys
were able to get on that first call and say
that announced that gunner Heelm's first touchdown reception.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
From one vow Knicks.
Speaker 5 (22:46):
Yeah, wouldn't that be cool? Nick? And you know there's
a couple of games every year where there's the player
in the game that played for Dave Logan. You know,
there's a handful of those guys out there, and it
seems like at least once a year year we call,
you know, or Dave, We'll call a game with one
of his guys, and you know, you would never know it.
(23:08):
You know, Dave never really acknowledges it. Dave is such
a pro, but you know he's pulling for his guys,
right like anybody would any any coach of you know,
these kids now that they're work their way up the
ladder from college football to the National Football League. But
Grant gets to hear the off air banter, you know,
(23:30):
during the break, So Grant would probably have more insight
into that because you hear, you hear not only some
interesting and pretty funny stuff, but you would hear comments
made that you wouldn't hear during the game. And maybe
that's when Dave would say something you know about his kid,
but but during the broadcast you rarely were He'll hear
(23:51):
David even bring it up.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Yeah, and that's my favorite part of running the Broncos
games is here and you and Dave cracking on each
other during the breaks or those special moments, those comments
where you know, because you, like you said, Dave is
such a pro where he's not gonna bring those things
to the broadcast. He has a job to do and
he does it phenomenally as well as you.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
And Yeah, but that is.
Speaker 1 (24:10):
My favorite thing that the off air comments that we
get in the Broncos broadcast.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Are you you teasing him?
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Or are you just giving him his little cough drop
when he needs it?
Speaker 5 (24:19):
You know? Yeah, I can hear you laughing on my
headphones in the background during those breaks, so I know
you appreciate it. At least somebody does.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Yeah. Well, I always appreciate your humor.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
Rick, I'm not sick of you yet, You're.
Speaker 5 (24:38):
Not well well.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
I don't know if you had an opportunity to watch
any of the draft coverage on NFL Network today, but
my mind was totally blown watching some of these young
kids and how fast they ran for the size that
they are.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Now, let me ask you a question. I want to
put you on the spot here.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
If you play the position in a phone, what position
would you have loved to play?
Speaker 3 (25:03):
And why?
Speaker 5 (25:06):
Well? I played running back in safety, and I think
safety probably would have been the best position for me
if I had a shot at the NFL. And when
I played, I ran a four to six forty, which
at that time was pretty good for a guy in
my size and the guy playing safety, I don't know
(25:30):
what you did, and Nick, I'm sure you were faster
than that. But these guys today are just ridiculous. These
guys aren't even human. When you see big guys running
four fives and four four nines, man, it just blows
me away. They just keep getting bigger and faster. So
I would have probably played your position if I got
(25:51):
the chance.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
You would have been a big old safety, Rick Lewis
Steve Atwars Yeah, yeah, yeah, not as big as.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Steve Atwater, but yeah that for the time that I played,
I would have been.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
What do you think you'd run in the forty?
Speaker 4 (26:05):
Now?
Speaker 2 (26:05):
I love when they do.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
The media combines what do you think your forty time
would be?
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Today?
Speaker 5 (26:10):
Well, after my hip replacements, I would probably walk about
a twelve second forty. I'm not supposed to run, that's fair.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
You can still get out on your motorcycle though, right.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
Yeah, once you get a joint replaced, they tell you
don't run anymore.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
Wait a wit, Wait, so they tell you not to run,
So how do you try to keep yourself in peap
performance and shape?
Speaker 3 (26:33):
How do you do that?
Speaker 5 (26:35):
You know you could ride a bike, walk on a treadmill,
you know, but they say don't ever run, and don't
play any sports with lateral movement, you know, like handball, tennis, pickleball, racquetball,
that kind of thing. So I haven't done those things
since what twenty twelve I had a hip replacement.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
So well, you're basically saying that if I have a
about going to keep going camping, bring you along.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
So there's a mountain lion somewhere that's look at.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
You. No, oh yeah no, I'll be the first guy
to get killed, no doubt about it. And I know
you're paying me back from last week when I talked
about kicking your ass on the ice.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
I know what we're talking about.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
I had it coming, Rick.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
You got a big show coming up this weekend, right Saturday,
with the Freddie Jones Band.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
Tell us a little bit about that.
Speaker 5 (27:35):
Yeah, we'll played at the place called the Wild Goose
Saloon in Parker. I've never played there before, heard great
things about it. A bunch of people from My Heart
are coming, you know, they've heard me talking about it
here on the radio. Benjamin Albright's coming, among others. Maybe
Connell aj R, Broncos producer. There's gonna be a big
(27:57):
iHeart crowd there Saturday night. It's going to be a
whole lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Well, if Benjamin Albright's coming, then I guess I'm not
gonna go because bad news just follows him around. So
I got to catch you guys the next time you play.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
Yeah, I probably shouldn't have mentioned him one of these times. Nick,
I got to get you out, man, Yeah, I told you.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
Look, man, I'll get on stage and what the symbols
or whatever that is?
Speaker 2 (28:21):
The tambourine triangle?
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Yes, What kind of singing voice do you think Nick
Ferguson has, Rick, pardon me, what kind of singing voice
do you think we could get Nick to sing a
song up there with your amazing lead singer?
Speaker 5 (28:37):
You know what? I think Nick has a really unique
tone to his voice. Uh, and I think Nick could
be a soul singer. I really do. Yeah, you got
a little bit of grit to your voice, almost like
you did you used to sing at church when you
were a kid.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
No, man, I was terrified of going up there, man,
the singing at the church. But I did it.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
I did it in and I clapped my hands and
I was their front center. But no, man, singing is
not my forte. I'll leave that to you, my friend,
and you enjoy.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Okay, Well, guarantee you you got rhythm? Am I right?
Speaker 3 (29:17):
I'm black? Of course.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
I could guarantee it, of course, right, So rhythm you
could play any percussion instrument probably pretty easily.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
There you go, put me on percussions.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
Well.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Rick Lewis has more soul than the average white guy
and has made me love funk music. Go check out
his show on Saturday down in Parker.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Rick great as always.
Speaker 5 (29:42):
Man.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
Always love chatting with you, all right.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
Guys, it's always fun. Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Yeah, there's Rick Lewis, one of my favorite people in
this radio world.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
So you wouldn't get on stage and sing with Rick Lewis.
No man, I'm.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
Listen, I'm not about embarrassing seeing myself.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
The one thing I do know how and I know
how to stay in my lane. I'm not going to
try to get up there and do things that I
know I can't do. That's why, you know, when people
who've asked me to see karaoke, I'm like, no, I've
seen an audience, our support, but I am not getting
up there doing something that I know I was not
born to do.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
I had to come back with a little more funk
music for our guy Rick Lewis, who joined us in
the last segment, and yeah, he got me hooked.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
On funk music.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
I used to produce the show with him and Dave
Logan and Cash Kathy Lee back in the day and
we would always have funky Fridays where we would always
play funk music and it made me a huge fan
of the genre. And yeah, another thank you to Rick
Lewis in my life to introducing me. You know, I
grew up as a white boy in rural southeast Ohio.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
We didn't know what funk music was. We were listening
to the country in top forty radio.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
So he opened my eyes to that and deeply indebted
to him for it.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
You know what That's the one thing I love about
being around Rick Lewis. It's just so much the verse
musical taste that he has to say yeah and once again,
Rick and I have these conversations ever down again. We
do it either in person or via text message, where
we get a chance to explore our musical backgrounds, what
(31:21):
we were introduced to. He introduced bands to me that
I had never heard before, and I'm like, wow, man,
that's awesome because when you think about music, music is
one of those things that brings people together exactly. I
don't care what walk of life you're from, your socioeconomic background,
but you hear something and it resonates with you and
(31:43):
someone else and everything else about you two may be
just throwed off, but that's the one thing that you
kind of come together under, under that musical umbrella.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
I literally went on a diatribe about this today on KBC.
I was on in the middays about the power of music.
There's this new song from a band I like called
The Head and the Heart that we're playing. It's called
Arrow and as a transplant to Colorado. It's about, you know,
going on your own path when everyone else is staying
the same and taking chances in life and betting on yourself.
(32:18):
And I just said, you know, that's that's the power
of music, right there is how personally a song can resonate,
but also to your point, how it can bring people
together from different backgrounds, all walks of life.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Because sometimes you hear a song and you think that that.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Person wrote that song especially for you.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
Ye right, because you may be going through some something
where it's emotional, a joyous type of moment, and you
hear certain songs like that that's my song.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Yeah right, that's.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
Kind of my song.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
In music can transport people to different places. And as
a kid growing up Inner city, believe it or not,
every Saturday like hot work, Casey Casey top forty Oh Casey, Yes.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Me too, mane yes, baby yeah, Casey Caseum's top forty
Yeah man, what that It took me for a trip
down memory later. I was not expecting you to break
his name up, man, and that.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
That is the thing.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
And I got the chance to know Carrie Caseum, his
daughter living in Los Angeles, and the first time I
met her, I told her, I said, listen to your
dad on Saturday afternoons. Kind of expanded my musical taste
and let me know that there was another world outside
of the inner city where.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
I was growing up.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
It made you a fan of Vanessa Carlton.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Well, I mean, not me, but exposed. You wouldn't know me.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
Think that the inner city kid would actually listen to
But you know that's how first uh started listening.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
To Van Halen.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Really, Yeah that makes sense. Yeah, that's great man. Yeah,
the power of music man. And Rick Lewis, Yeah, a
tremendous musician himself, but his musical knowledge is something that
puts me.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
An eye every time I talk to him.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
On the KOA Common Spirit Health text line, you can
join the conversation at five six six nine oher from
the three oh three grant what's the chance of getting

Speaker 2 (34:27):

Speaker 1 (34:28):
Yeah, Zach Seger is back there in the control room
holding up a zero.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
They want to keep their jobs here at.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
iHeart, so I won't speak for them, but I'm just
gonna say I'm gonna guess whatever percentage you had, it
is at the under By the way, another text here
on the KOA Common Spirit Health text line where'd it go?
Speaker 2 (34:49):

Speaker 3 (35:01):

Speaker 2 (35:05):
We gotta head a break.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
