Speaker 1 (00:00):
Night, I'm your guest host Grant smith Fill and then
for Benjamin Albright as he's a little under the weather.
Hoping to get ben back tomorrow. Thanks to Steve Atwater,
the Hall of Famer, for joining us in the previous hour.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Man.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Every time we get a chance to talk with Steve,
I just think, what a freaking great dude like just
as salt of the Earth.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Great guy.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah, very down to earth until you started talking about
TD in a run game then.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Young Yeah, And I still think you were wrong on that.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Apparently Zach Segers, our producer, gave me that stat to
prove your point, and me.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
And Steve took it the complete opposite direction and said,
this shows that he would be great in any system.
But I think you were right like Saquon, And I
don't was this off air on air? This might have
been off air, but you were saying how Saquon took
it to another level with the Eagles because of the
pieces around him.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
While he still put up decent numbers.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
You know, I had a couple thousand yard seasons. He
didn't have many two thousand yard seasons with the Giants
because they sucked all around him.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
You go to the Eagles.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
When you got other options and a great offensive line,
then you're gonna see the best of the best of
his potential, like we did with TD here in Denver.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
But this is why the other night I told Jack,
when you start to build the team, you got to
look at it like it's a puzzle, a fifteen hundred
piece puzzle, and every piece of the puzzle tells a
story and.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
It has to fit.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
It only becomes a problem when you try to get
eye pieces and try to smash them into It's why
that doesn't want. So I'm like, yeah, here it is,
it's done. Like, no, it's not that piece doesn't go there.
But it's team building, team construction. And this is what
I see the Broncos are doing using free agency.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
To say, well, what are some of our high positions
of need.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Can we add betteran talent in those particular places, and
then go into the draft, double down and add future
depth because this is the opportunity to do it.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Because BA is on a rookie deal.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, we got a couple more years, Yes.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
So we're gonna have to pay him if the trajectory
keeps going like it is, and it seems like it
should there's no reason to think it won't.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Year three, Year three, Year three, that's the telling year.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Year three is a year the telling you for every
single player, and at that point Bowl would have had
had three years in Sean Payton's offense.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
He should make an.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Astronomical jump this year, especially with the pieces that were
added far as veterans in office and defensive side.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Of the ball.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
When he gets to that third year, it's.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Gonna be like, man, it's off to charge the Broncos
better run not walk to get that deal done.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
We had Ian Rapport on ko Sports earlier today and
he was talking about those pieces to the puzzle that
the Broncos have added so far in this free agency
and Drake greenlaw of Fonga Lfanga.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah you're right, Hufanga.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yes, I'm gonna practice that in the mirror Tonightfanga and
Evan Ingram. Of course, the big news of today the
amazingly talented tight end. Here's what Ian Rappaport had to
say about all three of those guys on KOA Sports
earlier today.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
He's a really really good, tast catching tight end who've
been really run and I'm not gonna say he's a receiver.
Because you know, that's not really it's sort of too limiting.
But he can catch the ball at a receiver. I
think fans are really gonna like him. Kind of guy
who can catch and really take off with the ball
and an obvious priority for Sean Payton. And you know,
(03:24):
I think it's fair to say, like this.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Was the one guy that wanted.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
There's not a ton of tight ends available in free agency.
If you look around, there's really not. There's basically Juwan
Johnson and then Ingram and that was it. So they
did a nice job getting the top one, and I think,
you know, I think they're really going to benefit.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
What did you think about their other signings Hufonga actually
two forty nine ers really Drake Greenlaw and Teleno Hufanga.
What did you think about those guys and what do
you think they'll do for the defense?
Speaker 5 (03:51):
I mean, Hufang is one of my favorite players, not
that I'm like a scout or anything, but like, like
that is one like he is instinctive, he is fast,
he has fun. He's injured, so that's sort of the
knock on him as he's been injured, but when he's
on the field, he is just he is a missile
and he picks off a lot of balls. I mean,
he just can go get it and just you know,
(04:12):
the kind of guy who seems to move at a
little bit of a different speed than anybody else. You know,
had he been healthy, you're probably looking at a you know,
eighteen million dollar safety So I think, just because of injuries,
probably got a pretty good deal. But you know, I
think someone who fans are really gonna like it then
(04:35):
Drake green Law another I mean just fun fast and
seek the player who has also been injured. So you know,
I think if for the Broncos, they they seem to,
you know, buy low on players who battled injuries but
are really good and have high ceilings. That's sort of
the theme. I think got them really good deals with
some of these guys stay healthy. So yeah, I think
(04:58):
I think overall pretty power.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
I would say, overall pretty positive. You mentioned some of
the contract deals and details that.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Ian Rappaport mentioned there.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Drake Greenlaw three years thirty four million, Halfunga three years forty.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Five million, so fifteen a year.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
He said, if you would have been healthy, maybe eighteen
million a year, twenty million guaranteed to Hafonga and then
Evan Ingram twenty three million was sixteen and a half
million guaranteed over two years.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
I believe what.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Were your thoughts on what Ian had to say there
about those three free agent signings for the Broncos.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
I loved everything about it because you know, on BCT
prior to free agency opening, I actually talked to Ben.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
About this very thing. We were looking at.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Okay, well, what positions of me can the Broncos used?
The feel Obviously, Drake Greenlaw was on that list of
linebackers that the Broncos possibly would go after. I had
my eye on Nick Bolton because once again as.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
He went back to the chief he went back to the.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Treat Chiefs, and then I did, well, maybe Zach Obama
be bother than those guys.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
I was like, no, he's.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Not leaving that team.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
They're not going to let him go.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
So even with Splaine, when all those guys went back
to their teams, now you had to say, okay, well,
which guy that was still available on the market still
fits the Brandon defense and the style that you want
to play and he's still out there. Obviously, injuries constantly
come up. I know Ben has this big, you know,
problem with the injuries.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
But look, this is a.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Context sports inherent in the NFL, right, like's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
And that's the part that bothers me to an evaluation. Well,
he did get hurt a lot. Well, we're not talking
about badminton here, We're not. We're talking football.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
And then it's like, well, what kind of injury did
the guy have?
Speaker 3 (06:48):
It's like, come on, man, whatever, They just like, well,
he doesn't got enough tread on his tires. So if
he was not used being a runner back as much
as a team use him, probably coming out of sec
or a case of asking genty, then the argument will
be like, well, we don't have enough film on him
and we don't know if he's durable enough.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
So it's like a double edged sword. Do you damn
if you do your damn If you don't.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Well they just pick apart every single aspect of your
game and free agency and draft evaluation. Right, they're finding
things to complain about.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
You know why.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
There you go, I mean to me, that's why, in
my opinion, the combine was somewhat created.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Obviously you need to find a litmus test.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
And evaluate players or what it came, what it morphed
into was like, how many things can we find in
this T shirt short Olympics to tell us, well, we
shouldn't draft this guy here.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
That's what it kind of developed into.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
That's why you see in free agency you don't see
a lot of guys taking a lot of trips to
a lot of teams. Is either you know the guy
can do and you want to sign them and you don't. Right,
it's kind of that idea. But the barcles are putting
pieces together and if they're able to get running backs,
and here's idea, you draft a tight end in this draft.
(08:03):
To go through this twenty twenty five draft and not
get a drafted tight end, I think that would be
a problem.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I think that'd be kind of done with how much
depth there is.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
And you get two running backs, you draft one, and
you get a.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Rookie free agent UDFA.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah, I like that idea too. I mean, I wouldn't
even be opposed to drafting two running backs. Well, how
good are our defense looks? And now that we have
depth at some of the positions that were kind of
a position of concern in the previous years. You know,
if PJ locks your third safety, you're pretty well off.
So I think you go offense heavy. I think you
draft a wide receiver. I think you draft a couple
(08:39):
tight ends. I think you draft a couple of running
backs and probably some interior defensive linemen.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
You spin this draft adding depth in youth.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
That's what you do. Based on what the Broncos did
in free agency. And here's another reason I'm glad they
signed Ebon Ingram. It gives them an opportunity to go
out and get two running backs, whatever order you want
to put him in. But for me, now, hopefully we
see the Broncos run more plays where we're talking about
(09:13):
under center. You're under center plays because even though you
can line up in a shotgun, you line up in
the pistol, you can show some action.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
As far as run. But if I'm on the defensive
side of the ball, I'm not buying that.
Speaker 7 (09:26):
No, you know, not with what they've shown on tem
the running back is too deep. Even if you do
give it to him, he averages two point five. I'm
fine with that, right, But when the quarterback goes under center,
that's play action, that's play pass.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
If you go back and watch to fail from Jacksonville
and plays where Evan.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Ingram was effective. They flexed him out and.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
They had corners matched up on it because I know
Ian said, well, y'all don't want to look at him
like a wide receiver.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
I know Sean Payton doesn't.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Because he had he had a situation where Jimmy Graham
with Jimmy Grahm was like, you throw into me like
I'm a wide receiver, so why don't you pay me
like one?
Speaker 4 (10:02):
And then they treated his button Seattle.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
You know, speaking of other free agents that the Broncos
could sign, you know, we already got green Law as
a linebacker.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
But the Jets release c J.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Mosley, who, in the famous words of our producers ax Seekers,
is on the wrong side of thirty. But, as he
pointed out in the break, not coming off an ACL injury,
would you still be interested in going pursuing someone like c. J.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Mosley?
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Absolutely? Yeah, Why not kick the ties on him.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
He's been out there for a couple of days, so
his value probably has gone down, and he looks around
the league and says, okay, well, hm, I'm at the
stage in my career I still want to get paid,
but at the same time, I still feel as though
of a value contributor and let me find a team
that can possibly put me in the playoffs. Now, you say, well,
if he's looking at it the right way, you look
(10:51):
at how the Broncos defense is. Carl we Constructed, you
got DJ you got Franklin Myers, you got Zach Allen.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Those guys are going to cover you up right now.
All you have to do is be.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
A side to side linebacker. Can you drop me coverage?
Can can you recoverage? That's all you need. And I
know this works well for Zach. I know Zach Seager
is really happy about this and would love for the
Broncos to make this move because he's not a huge
Alex Singleton fan.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
I like him a lot.
Speaker 8 (11:21):
I like Denzel Perryman too.
Speaker 9 (11:23):
I'm also happy to bring Singleton back.
Speaker 8 (11:25):
I just think you've got.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
To, uh, you're not happy to bring your back that line,
not at.
Speaker 8 (11:30):
That current right that that's where, that's where right now.
Speaker 9 (11:34):
Six million dollars, which is about what Cody Barton's making.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
It's a pretty cheap deal for.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Us starting inside linebackers coming off seventy two tackles a year.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
That's pretty good production for a six million dollar line.
Speaker 8 (11:48):
You frame it that way, it counds.
Speaker 9 (11:49):
Good if you frame it as bottom five and this
tackle rate each of the last few years.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Life is all about how you frame a seekers. You
can either look at the positives or you can look
at the negative.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
He like Benjamin right over exactly.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
He told you that he got a PhD in a
Benjamin all Bright school of journalism.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
That's what he's telling me right now.
Speaker 8 (12:08):
I need to throw my blanket in the dryer on
gonna get a cold.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
Yes, what's what's the market for CJ. Mosley?
Speaker 1 (12:13):
What is he going to be asking for per a year?
Speaker 2 (12:16):
And what bet less less than six?
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Well, Cody's getting paid. He's on a three year twenty
one million, so he's getting paid seven.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Yeah, he's getting deal for Cody Barton.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Man.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
You know who who probably is mad right now? Justin
Justine shere, not because he played.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
He is a starting linebacker next to Cody Barton and
he only got a one year deal worth two point
seven million.
Speaker 6 (12:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (12:40):
Yeah, hey, I like keeping that chip on his shoulder.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Yeah, fully guaranteed two point seven million.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
I don't care, but.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
You said that that was a big deal, fully guaranteed
two point seven I'm like, well, when another guy's getting seven,
you getting two point seven.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Yeah, the man's not mad.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
The gohead seekers.
Speaker 9 (13:02):
Well, I think a little to the Singleton point, he,
according to Mike Cliss, was promised an opportunity to compete
for the starting job, and I don't think he's competing
for Drake green lost job.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Yes, that's a very valid point. So you think it's
between him and Alex Singleton.
Speaker 8 (13:15):
As it stands now, And I think for me, I
would look.
Speaker 9 (13:19):
To renegotiate on Singleton because if I think if Singleton
was a free agent on the open market right now,
I don't think he's getting that six million dollar deal.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
And I think he knows that.
Speaker 9 (13:28):
It's what honestly, what the Bengals did with Joe Mixon
like two three years ago, where it's Okay, we kind
of regret this deal.
Speaker 8 (13:33):
We'd love to keep you around. I think we can
both agree you're.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Not worth this.
Speaker 9 (13:37):
Let's work on something together to make it work because
we still need that play.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Oh well, hold on, let me add something to that, because,
like when you think about Alex Singleton, when the team
picked him up from Philly, he was just projected as
just being special team especial teamer like like Zach Bond.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
He worked himself into a starting.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Role, just like Singleton, just like Singleton.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
So I push back on that whole idea, Like if
Singleton was a free agent right now, I think he
still would have value.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
The only thing that what.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Made me table that conversation is the fact that he's
coming off of injury.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
But how much is this undervalued? I think the heart
and soul of a locker room guy. He was there
after he tore his aco on the sidelines.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
A lot of times you.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
See players that you know go off and do their
own training. He was there every day, coaching up to
Cody Bartons.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
And the Justin s Chernauds.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
I think that brings value, especially at the middle linebacker position.
Who's the guy talking to your whole defense every single play.
I think that's that's something you can't overlook in Alex
Singleton's value because that.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
Becomes an extra Essentially, are you go from a green
dit to an injury guide to being an extra coach
in the.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Room right helping them out?
Speaker 3 (14:47):
This is things day I'm sure Zach Singers did not
take in consideration.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
I would Dowings say on Alex Singletson's name, I.
Speaker 8 (14:56):
Did take it into consideration. And here's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
I think we.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
Really said this.
Speaker 9 (15:00):
I think we would have said the same thing about
a frankly better player, younger player who wasn't coming off
of injury just a few months ago, and Justin Simmons,
and I don't think this defense looked like it was
lacking for leadership or lacking for ability. They had a
much better season, frankly than they had in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
I think that's.
Speaker 8 (15:17):
Correlation, not causation.
Speaker 9 (15:19):
But you just brought in Drake green Law and Talanoa Hufonga.
Who what you guys were just talking about with Steve Alwater.
Those guys are loud voices in the locker room. They're
going to have a leadership presence in their own right
because they're coming from winning backgrounds. I don't think you
need Alex Singleton to be that guy personally.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Yeah, well, I disagree with you seekers completely, but that's okay.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
As a unium sports talk radio is that we can.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Weather hoping to get Ben back tomorrow. Thanks to Steve Atwater,
the Hall of Famer, for joining us in the first hour,
we are going to talk a little college basketball in
the next hour because the CU buffs getting a big
win earlier today over West Virginia. Come back when over
the Mountain yeers sixty seven to sixty in the Big
(16:05):
Twelve Tournament. We'll be talking with Mark Johnson coming up
at the top of the next hour. Quite queenly eyes
my favorite from Mark Johnson. Love those calls. Scared Zach
seekers back there. Also tonight you've got Northern Colorado going
up against Montana and the Big Sky Conference Tournament final.
Northern Colorado may be the only Colorado school dancing in
(16:27):
March madness, which would be crazy to think about.
Speaker 9 (16:30):
But are you counting out to you from winning their
conference championship?
Speaker 2 (16:34):
You think they're gonna be Houston tomorrow. Yeah, Hey, I believe.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
I believe Grant Nick.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
What do you have to say about that?
Speaker 4 (16:43):
What I have to say.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
What I have to say is I don't even believe
Zach and his belief as you can't. No, I know
did He wasn't really committed to him. He wasn't really sincere.
It was almost like you know, in acting, you gotta
commit to the he wasn't.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Maybe spit I was laughing. So here's the thing.
Speaker 9 (17:03):
I didn't think they were gonna be TCU as sure
as I didn't think they were going to.
Speaker 8 (17:07):
Be West Virginia. If this trend.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Holds a little different than the Houston Cougars, yes, you
talking about.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
A lot holding right there, young Zach season.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
And by the way, I don't want to discount Colorado State.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
They got a game in their tournament.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Tomorrow against Nevada and they are the first four out
and Joe Lonardi's latest prediction, So maybe they win a
couple more games in the Mountain West and they can
sneak in as well.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
But we'll see.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
By the way, KA tournament updates are presented by Xeminity
Stream Live Sports.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
From the best seat in the house.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
With that, let's go out to our KA Common Spirit
Health hotline and go inside the numbers with the Ryan
Michael on Twitter. Ryan Michael, who is very familiar with
the Broncos new free agent.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Tight end signing. He's done some work for the.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Or the Jaguars flagship station as well as with us
here on Broncos Country Tonight, Ryan, how are you tonight man?
Speaker 4 (18:02):
Doing well?
Speaker 6 (18:02):
Grant Nick, how are you guys?
Speaker 1 (18:04):
We're doing good man. It's always better when we can
get a little nerdy with you. As I mentioned, you know,
the Broncos have been making some big moves and free agency,
perhaps none bigger than today's signing of tight end Evan Ingram.
And like I said, bringing you on, you've covered the
Jags for two seasons and have been on.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Their flagship station.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
What are your thoughts on the Broncos signing tight end
Evan Ingram.
Speaker 6 (18:26):
I'm excited, but I'm cautious, so it's a little bit
of a mixture here. I'll start off with the good stuff, obviously,
you know, Evan Ingram, just going back a year and
a half twenty twenty three, caught one hundred and fourteen passes,
the second best mark by a tight end in the
history of the National Football League, the best mark ever
(18:46):
from a tight end in the American Football Conference, a
mark that's never been reached by Rob Bronkowski or Travis Kelce.
Not so bad, even more impressive than that. In twenty
twenty three, when he was healthy, he had a catch
percentage of seventy nine point seven percent. And I don't
believe anybody with more than eighty receptions at tight end
(19:08):
had a number anywhere.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
Close to that.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
So if you expand that out to his time in Jacksonville.
What he averaged every seventeen games, ninety three receptions for
eight hundred and twenty eight yards, four touchdowns. He's ever
been a touchdown maker, but last year he only had
one game over fifty yards. And so you look at him,
he'll be thirty one years old. Before the first week
(19:31):
of the season, you know he's going to be recovering
from labor and surgery, so I imagine his participation during
the offseason will be limited, even if he's ready.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
To go League One.
Speaker 6 (19:42):
And so it's a little bit of a mixed bag.
And one of the things that I always look at
Grant when we're talking about how a skill position player
has produced on the football field is who they had
a quarterback. And you guys both know that I'm in
the minority in being very high on Trevor Lawrence. I
coined the nickname all twenty two Trevor because he's somebody
who always looks better on the coach's film than he
(20:02):
does in the box law And that's a trend that's
been going for three years straight, all three years spent
with him in Ingram In twenty twenty two, Trevor Lawrence
had a higher DVLA than Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts,
who are both playing at an MVP level. That year.
In twenty twenty three, a lot of people felt that
he took a step backward. I actually felt that he
took a step forward. He led the AFC and adjusted
(20:24):
EPA per play, and last year before he came back
to play against Houston, a game he should have never
suited up for, he was top ten in the NFL
and adjusted EPA per play, total QBR and touchdown passes.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
And so I think that.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
Lawrence did a lot to make Ingram or the help
I should say. I'm an Ingram be at his very best.
It'll be interesting to see what he does in Broncos country.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
I just can't believe Zach Seegers likes a signing if
he's on the wrong side of thirty and coming off
an injury.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
I mean, this is mind blowing. It's beck to me.
Speaker 6 (20:56):
Well, right, Ryan, I'm just going to add that, you know,
when you when you're looking at the age factor, you know,
look at what Travis Kelsey is doing now relative to
his prime. Look at what Rob Gronkowski did later in
his career, relative to his prime, and Evan Ingram isn't
quite a bad stage of his career yet, He's a
few years younger.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
He's no spring chicken.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
He was playing in the NFL during a time where
Josh Rosen was projected to be the number one pick
in the NFL draft.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
The following year.
Speaker 6 (21:25):
He's been in the NFL to really a decade.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Well, here's something that's interesting.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
I know what you have been, I guess criticized for
defending Trevor Lawrence, and I understand some of the reasons
as to why you you defend him. But let's compare
a contrast the skill set between all bo Nicks and
Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Who's got a better skill set?
Speaker 3 (21:48):
And obviously this quarterback gives every Ingram the best chance
to succeed.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
It's a really good question, and I have very serious
concerns about Trevor Lawrence's health in the long term. I
look at his playing situation similar to what Andrew Luck
went through. Where will he bounce back from the concussion
suffered at the end of the year last year? He
will they'll play football again? Will he ever be one
hundred percent? And will collectively those injuries take their toll.
(22:14):
I'm very concerned and I don't see him as somebody
who's going to be playing quarterback for fifteen years. So
certainly from a health standpoint, bow Nick has the advantage there.
There are some similarities in terms of their physical strengths.
They're both fantastic quarterbacks throwing on the run. They definitely
have some wheels and so they can do some damage
with their legs the duel threat. They have very strong arms,
(22:36):
and they're deadly with their accuracy in the right sort
of situation. And not exactly the same kind of quarterback,
not playing in the same system exactly as I said.
Analytics favor Trevor Lawrence even last year top ten in
all of those metrics. Bough Nick's last year he finished
eighteenth until GVR and adjusted EPA per play, where Trevor
Lawrence led the conference in twenty twenty three, was still
(22:59):
top ten last year before that final game against Houston.
Trevor Lawrence finished twenty nine last year, and that's just
above Mac Jones, who was thirtious. So Jacksons will suffer
a significant drop off when Lawrence left, and that Jaguars
defense at the time that Lawrence left wing thirty second,
dead last in yards per play and justine yards per attempt.
They allowed that thirty second at bassa Ate one hundred
(23:21):
and thirteen point four. It was darn near like facing
two thousand and four paid manning every single week. And
so the Jaguars were a team that was carried by
a quarterback to five hundred were last year for us.
In Bronco's country. Brow Knicks certainly in my view of
the second best quarterback in the draft. I said that
before the draft. That certainly played out to be the
case after the end of the season. But in Bronco's Country,
(23:41):
we're a team that is a defensive oriented team. We
have not seen bow Knicks carry the team to five
hundred to carry the team to be competitive just yet
these young quarterbacks, so we'll give them time.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Man, That's just crazy how quickly the narrative can shift
around you in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
Because you know, the story on.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Trev Lawrence even through high school and in his college
days was he never missed a snap, and now we're
worried about the future of his health. It's it's just
wild how quickly the game of football can catch up
you catch up to you on an injury status. But
you know, Ingram was a big signing today for the Broncos.
But George Payton made some other moves too, And we
talked about the Broncos being, you know, a defensive team.
(24:22):
What stands out to you most on the defensive side
of the ball of these free agency additions, you.
Speaker 6 (24:28):
Know, in a similar vein to what we've done on
offense with Evan Ingram. Not exactly the same situation here,
but kalanoa Hufanga. He's a guy who was a first
team All Pro selection not that long ago, twenty twenty two,
and so he tours ACL in twenty twenty three and
he hasn't really been one hundred percent since then. But
if you look at that stretch, he had between twenty
(24:49):
twenty two and twenty twenty three seven interceptions, and he
missed seven games in twenty twenty three. And if you
look at his average from twenty twenty two through last season,
and I like, do see what people are producing every
seventeen games, which doesn't tell us that he's going to guy.
He's going to be a guy who's going to be
healthy enough to play seventeen games, But he averaged ninety
four combined tackles every seventeen games. So he hits like
(25:13):
a ram. He can pick you off. And certainly, I
think for the price that we got him at the
low risk, high reward situation and so similar a little
bit to what we are seeing with Evan Ingram. I
certainly would love to say both two of those playmakers
healthy and playing at anywhere close to the level that
they exhibited.
Speaker 10 (25:30):
On the shield when they were So this Broncos roster
today is better than it was, you know last season.
Are we too far ahead of our cart and thinking
that based on additions that they made on both sides
of the ball, that is unfair to start thinking about
the Broncos as possibly a Super Bowl contender.
Speaker 6 (25:52):
I don't think you could rule it out, Nick, but
historically regression is a thing, and so you know, if
you look at before the season started lining year, I
believe AGAs had us at five and a half wins.
We obviously ended up winning ten, but in those ten wins,
only one was truly against the team with a winning record,
when we.
Speaker 5 (26:10):
Beat Tampa Bay.
Speaker 6 (26:10):
I don't really count the season finale against Kansas City
against some U star salesman as that Albright would say,
you know, so, I look at what we're going to
be doing heading into Bomicks his sophomore season and sophomore
regression at the quarterback position is a big thing. You
look at Matt Lyon from Rookie of the Year in
two thousand and eight to playing injured and the not
quite the same quarterback he was in two thousand and nine. Obviously,
(26:33):
RG three got hurt in twenty twelve. Daniel Jones looked
halfway dec in twenty twenty, and he was a significantly
below average quarterback. His sophomore year looked no further than c. J. Stroud.
He was third in the NFL, and just that a
hards for attempt is a rookie and he was twenty
eighth last year, just below Cooper Rush. And so when
(26:53):
you see the standard that we effect for ourselves on defense,
it's going to be awfully difficult to top or match
that on offense. Looking at what we did at the
quarterback position when it's playing so well, I'm certainly pulling
for him to play even better this year, but that's
anything but a sure thing.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Yeah, just anything to avoid that dreaded sophomore slump. We're
talking with Ryan Michael at the Ryan Michael on Twitter.
So Nick and I were talking about this earlier, and
with the signing of Evan Ingram, he still wants to
draft a tight end in the first round. I'm not
so high.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
I was waiting for you to react to that.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
But what about what say you, Ryan, do you take
a tight end on in the first round for the
Broncos is now off the table with the signing of
Evan Ingram.
Speaker 6 (27:37):
You know, I don't know that it's off the table,
and certainly I guess they're going to look to see
what his state of health is going to be as
we get closer and closer to the draft. You know,
there are a number of positions of knee wide receivers.
Certainly I think is a direction we could look in
running back at something I wouldn't rule out in the
first round. And you know, given how strong we are
(27:57):
on paper, it's always a possibility to trade back too,
and so I wouldn't completely roll out the possibility of
adding depth to the tight end position, but I think
we might in different positions wide receiver or potentially running
back in that spot.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
Brian, we always love chatting with you man and I
love getting nerdy with you. And just on a side note,
I want to thank you personally for reaching out to
me about the loss of my grandpa.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
Your words meant a lot to me.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
So you're not just a statistician, but you're also a
great dude. So thanks for everything, and thanks for joining
us tonight on Broncos Country Tonight.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
You got a brother anytime.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
That's the Ryan Michael. What a good dude.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
Man.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
He sent me some messages and I was like, you know,
you can just tell the character of people when they
reach out to you when.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Times are tough.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
Well, I'm glad you did the same, So thank you Nick,
and thank you Zach.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
Yeah, I'm glad that there are multiple people who are
reaching out to you and your time and need, because
that's always a difficult situation.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
Because really quickly when.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
I found out I will tell you this, as soon
as I hit send to you to talk to you,
you know, check on your see how things were going.
My mother called me and she was just like, you
need to call your father. Oh gosh, yes, because he
was in hospital. So I was just like, wait a minute,
(29:21):
this this is wild. And another one of my friends.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
Same day, same.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Day, man just kind of minutes apart told me that
a buddy of ours kind of lost his mom. So
it it's crazy. And the more of that story is
hold on to the people in your life as long
as you can. Any family bickering situation that you have, Man,
(29:49):
let it go.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
It's not worth it.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
We only have a short period of time on this earth.
We don't know when our time expires. Man, just kind
of live it up and live the best life you
can live. I know that's not what you guys were
hoping for, but I'm not going to apologize because I
know you guys needed just as much as iety.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
Yeah, and it's always a good reminder. And if you're
thinking about making that call but you're too busy.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Troup what you're doing and just make that call.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Man, going back to the Broncos, because that's what we are,
Broncos Country to night. You sent me this great sound
from Wyndham Clark. I want to get to who is
a Colorado legend himself on the golf course, huge Broncos fan,
and he was on upp In Adams and had this
to say about the Broncos offseason moves.
Speaker 11 (30:30):
I'm a huge defensive guy. When it comes to NFL football.
I think I learned my lesson in gosh, what year
was that? Like what fourteen fifteen when we lost the
Super Bowl to the Seattle the best offense versus best defense?
Speaker 2 (30:43):
It was atrocious.
Speaker 11 (30:45):
Two years later we built up an amazing defense, and
then we win the Super Bowl with out Peyton Manning
and with Brocosswiler and that whole thing. And so that's
when I became a defensive guy. So now we're in
the in this current state, and I love that we
keep we double down on our def I love getting Euphanga,
love getting green line, and so what I love about
it is we just continue to get better on that side.
(31:08):
And it looks like we're gonna draft probably a tight end,
maybe pick up a running back.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
It'd be kind of cool if you got Scatterbo.
Speaker 11 (31:14):
I live in Arizona, and I think he's kind of
a fun He could be great.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
So you're gonna get a tight end, that's for sure.
There needs to It's love one. I like him a
lot in the draft.
Speaker 11 (31:25):
In the draft, and then I would I'd love to
go get I saw digs A is still available, or
maybe Cooper cup.
Speaker 8 (31:30):
I don't know if maybe Cooper got picked up yet.
Speaker 11 (31:32):
But I'd love to get like one, one big name
so that bo kind of has all the weapons and
there's no excuse.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
So this was obviously before we got Evan Ingram, but
I agree with him man double him down on the defense.
Hafonga is still even after the Evan Ingram signing, is
still my favorite move we've made this offseason. You heard
Ryan say at twenty twenty two All Pro Safety.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
For me being a former safety myself, I love it
because I know how the game has changed and will
continue to involve. But having a safety that's capable of
doing a multitude of different things.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
When when you are in.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
A situation where you have interchangeable safeties, there's no strong safety,
there's no free safety. The offense, they don't know what
you're going to do, they don't know your plan of attack.
You can just kind of rotate a guy down and
then take a guy to and bring him to the.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Middle of the field.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
And what I love about Brandon Jones and Hufung of
this pairing is that both of these guys could blitz.
Both of these guys have the capability of playing around
the line of scrimmage. But more importantly, there are good
players in the middle of the field. They are great
center field players that can play from numbers to numbers.
Speaker 4 (32:39):
That that gives you so much stuff that you can do.
What's even better than that, you got Roley Moss coming
into his.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
Second year he started, and the defensive player of the Year.
On the other side, Yes, if I'm Roley Moss, I'm
putting in some work this offseason.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
Well and he listen, he got a lot of it
last year and a lot of people gave him Flag four.
Speaker 4 (32:59):
But he battle And that's the thing I like about
Riley Moss's game.
Speaker 1 (33:02):
That's the thing I love about Riley Moss too. You're
listing to Broncos Country Tonight, We're gonna come back and
talk a little college basketball with the voice of the Buffs,
Mark Johnson. When we come back on Broncos Country Night
on KOA A fifty AM ninety four to one FM.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
