Speaker 1 (00:00):
That's been all Brian Nick Ferguson, Shanna's got back there
behind the glass, Ryan the Og, Triple Og, Godfather, the
Broncos Countries. And I was sitting in there, what's going on, buddy,
Good to see you.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Thanks for letting me crash your show for a few minutes.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Right.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
I just figured you, of all people, would have some
thoughts on the West Sacramento Athletics taken on.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
The Colorado Rockies.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
It was exactly as I expected it would be. No, actually,
I really thought the Rockies would win this one.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
So I hope he'll kill you. It's the hope they'll
kill you. No, man, you know that they're battling. You know,
it was, it was. It was sort of a tough game.
Speaker 5 (00:32):
I thought they had a chance. Man, towards the end.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Then you get to extras and you know, and then
I was like, oh, no.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, they were, they were battling.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
He got the extra geme and got to the eleventh
inning and then things kind of fell apart. But I
thought the bullpen, Nick, I thought the bullpen kind of
hung in there, and once again, you know, Feltner gave
you a chance. He got through five innings and give
up two runs. I mean, certainly like to go a
little longer than that. But starting pitching has been excellent
for the Rockies. They just really kind of haven't put
it all together yet.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
You know that that's kind.
Speaker 6 (00:59):
Of been the narrative for the season for the Rockies.
I think that's five straight losses in a row, and
the starting pitching has done their job. It's just the
fact of I mean, sometimes the defense is there, but
it's actually scoring points. I think this is first time
all season long the Rockies have scored over two runs
(01:20):
and when your your bats are not waking up the way.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
You needed to score four in a loss.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
Yes, So it's it's it's a struggle for this team.
Speaker 6 (01:29):
I know, it's really frustrating when you think you right
there on a precipice, you push it to extra innings
and things still don't go your way. It's difficult, but
I just say, you know what, hey, April showers. This
is I told Benn the other night that this is
April here in Denver. This is our version of April showers.
(01:52):
It was really cold out there, but I got to
give it to the guys. They went out there and
they competed, just things that you know, fallow their way.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
It was for you. You were a cu in, so
we were outside. We were outside in the element. The
punting was.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Done outside the pond. You actually watched, by the way,
he ran a four six five forty and he didn't
and he did not at all and all just kind
of stood up and ran.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
Yes, wow, yes, yes, he ran. He kicked the cold,
which which we we both.
Speaker 6 (02:22):
Agree that to show that you can tick an inclement
weather that shows a lot about who you.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
Are as a kicker man. Yes, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Incredible. Apparently he was a background actor in the Lord
of the Rings trilogy too.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
I'm kidding having your jokes this morning.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
God, when I sat there with the comedy routine, thinking
you're like, are you really funny?
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Him?
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Like you laugh at all the jokes, like what you
fell for it? But trying the book wrap, you can't
say I'm not funny and then laugh at all my jokes.
I'm just saying I think he's got a pity.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Oh there's a hard pivot. It's out of pity.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
I feed your ego because I know that if I
stop laughing at.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Your jokes, you really would crumble response is tanking harder
on the stock market right now.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Both teams had eleven hits today. The Rockets six walks,
six walks. Patient, it's the plate a little bit out
there in the strikeouts they have in the end strikeouts.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah, yeah, the Age struck out seven times, a Rocky
struck out fourteen, and that's okay.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
On base, yeah, that continues to be an issue and
that that's so.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
You mentioned the twenty seven runners on base, fourteen strikeouts time.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
And time again.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
They'll get the gig guys on, but they don't do
the small things to move the runners. And honestly, with
a team that's working in these kinds of margins, snick,
I mean you have to do that. Those are those
are just the things. Those are, you know, like eating
your apple.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Sauce as you would oftentimes say, you have to be
able to move the runners.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
You've got to be able to get them across the
plate and and and get runs where you can get them,
because they're sometimes going to be hard to come by.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
You know what.
Speaker 6 (03:59):
I For me, I look at bub Black because in
these situations, everyone directs their attention towards him. It's it's
all his fault, and I scream at people on social media,
not quite like Ben, but but I do scream at them.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
That's been it's a little different.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
But I taf kids the things that I.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Could say that I don't see the thing about.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
You turn over a new leaf and then you turn
it right back over it.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
It's important to turn it twice exactly.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
I feel for bub Black because all of this isn't
his fault. And my question is like, Okay, what does
he have to do to help the guys at the plate?
Is it mechanical? Is it something that that's in their hands.
What is it that's preventing them from seeing the ball
off the pitcher's hands across the plate?
Speaker 5 (04:48):
What is it?
Speaker 6 (04:49):
It's got to be something. And I know Fellas, there's
no magic elixir. I mean, you can't wave.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
No, we're not doing that magic lixer anymore.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Ben's start of the problem.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
Listen, even with that magicalxer back in the day, you
still had to make contact with the ball right and
and right now that's not happening at a high volume
for the Rocks.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
So Nick Ferguson solution is torpedo bats.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
Yes, I would say I was why not tell me, tell.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Me Ry why not? Why not?
Speaker 4 (05:22):
No, I I have no argue before it, and I guess.
Bud Black this morning to the media said that there
are a couple of guys that might do that here
soon that they haven't acknowledged win that will happen, and
it doesn't sound like it's going to be the entire
group of hitters for the Rockies, but he said a
couple of guys that are are gonna probably do that.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Meaning heavily towards it.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yeah, I mean, I'm a big proponent of that. It's legal.
It is legal. I've been doing that at whiffleball for years.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
So playing against kids don't countis imp.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Terrible.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Oh man, like Peyton Manning commercial from SNL clocking them
with the ball.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
But it's a combination, right, It's it's not just the hitting.
It's it's as we mentioned, it's the strikeouts, right, and
high leverage situations. You get to a board no outs
and you don't, you don't move the runners, you don't
even as you mentioned, even make contact to get a
fly so that they can advance, like you're not even
doing those things.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
And so again it's one of those things like if
they found a way to win this game.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
Let's say the tying run gets across right, which they
got robbed initially on the farmer inside the park home
run on that to be fair.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
And then and then Beck was able to move that
runner who was the ground world doubles, so he moved him.
He got him in.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
So if for some reason the Rockies would have gone
to X trainings, they would have won this game.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
This entire script.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Flips and so you know, you don't freak out about
it because at that point you're like two and five.
It's still not a great record, especially in a division
where the Dodgers are undefeated. The Podres I think, are
still undefeated. You know, you still have things to work on.
But it's amazing how in baseball like you really can't
get too high or low on any individual moment because
by tomorrow they can still win this series over the weekend.
(07:14):
And then it's like, hey man, it was sort of
tough loss. But then they ended up bouncing back and
they and all of a sudden, they hit ten run
They got ten plated runs tomorrow, and we're feeling much better.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
About this sat this situation. Let's set a record for
the season. Fine, it was the sport you.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Have to be the most patient in one hundred and
sixty two games, long haul. But you know, you can
see some signs early on that this team, you know,
they've they've got to get the bats together.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
For the starting pitching has been great, was good, wasn't bad.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
But you know you turn around and you look at
that the bats are just not been there to start
the season for the Rockies thus far.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
We don't know if that will change or not. But
outside of Civilli, I mean even n Ain't without allowing
a run, how look good out there.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
He had the two strikeouts and I mean, yeah, they
were getting the production from the bullpen that they needed
to win this game. They had the error. It was unfortunate,
gave the third run to the Athletics. And that's so
tough because I today, when we were doing the pregame
in front of course field, I was going on and
on about how great their defense is, and then of
course they have the raor that ends up plating what
(08:22):
would have been the third run there, and then the
Rockies came back and tied it. So fortunately it was
like a three to two final, and the error was
the thing that cost him.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
You were out there, How was the crowd today, how
was the what was the overall receipt. I mean, it's
a lousy day to start to start the season out here.
This is a great football weather, but not not much
for baseball weather pretty sides.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
You know.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
That's the thing about opening Day. There's just this vibe downtown.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
And yeah, you're right, it was cold and it was snowing,
and there's a certain amount of people bundled up that
doesn't screen baseball, you know, But oh man, I people
were in a really good move.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
They were they were very excited about it.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
They they come and hung out and watch some of
the show with Dave and Shelby, myself health and obviously
there was a decent crowd there for Mandy and Ross too,
So yeah, it was it was a blast. It was
a blast. It's always a blast to be able to
do that. I was talking to Dave Tepper, our program director,
before this thing. It's like, man, I've been broadcasting in
this market for almost sixteen years and I've been down
there probably ten or so of it, and I never
(09:18):
take it for granted because it's just it's such a treat.
It's such a part of our community. And again we've
had bad weather games for Opening Day. This is another
example of one. But you play the game and you
get out there, and honestly, I got the sense from
Rockies fans that they're not giving up anytime.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
So you know, I got a question because when we
talked about the Rockies every single year, it always comes
down to pitching, starting pitching, and relief pitching. And the
idea is that the Rockies can't get high quality pitching here.
They can't even pay for it, right, so you have
to draft and develop. So as a strategy, I mean
(09:57):
as a hitter's friendly part, we continue to hear that.
I mean, why why don't the Montforts says they can't
put their money into acquiring great pitching, Why don't they
put it into hitting Chris Bryant, Well, that's one guy,
but not.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Saying Chris bry spp was to be the Cincinnati Bengals
of Major League Baseball.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
I mean, you lose, but at least it's gonna be
fun Ian Desmond a few years together.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
They don't get doing that.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
I don't care that.
Speaker 6 (10:21):
The Nuggets fans, not the Neggets fans, but the Rockies
fans are going to go to the games anyway, right,
and if the team is, if they're gonna lose games,
why not make it entertained.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
I'm here not like you know, it's like we say
about the Sistine Bangles, be the most entertaining team to
you know, to score thirty five points and lose ten games,
and and you know you could have the Rocket you
used to be a team, you know, maybe the most
entertaining baseball team. It's out there, put nine runs up
on the board every night and still losing.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
I'll take it.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
I think that you make a good point.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
The issue I think I have for me is is
a the timeliness of the hitting the strikeouts that they've
been high on on those things for years. And it's
the home row splits too, because the Rockies do maybe
figure some things out here at altitude of course field,
but then they go out into the road and they
they can't see the ball. And so I think that
(11:09):
question has some layers to the answer. And I'm not
trying to dodge and I'm just I'm saying you're right.
I mean, hey, let's just be the Blake Street Bombers again,
you know, let us be that team where everybody just
fears our offense.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Well, okay, yeah, and you've had times like that.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
I mean, they've had some moderations of this team where
you looked at that lineup and you were like, my goodness,
where where is the hole in this lineup?
Speaker 2 (11:29):
But they still didn't win baseball games at that point?
Is the pitching.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
So so this is the thing. The pitching seems to
be rounding in the form. The hitting has been a
lot more inconsistent in the last few years than maybe
we wanted to admit. And so you know, you're gonna
have to find some guys that you can lean on
that are going to sort of carry this thing. You know.
The early guy that they could lean on was Hunter Goodman.
Goodman has been their best yeah today, but up till
(11:57):
today connected a couple of times. Kyle Farmer had a
couple of hits.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:03):
So for me, it's gotta be the Tovar McMahon has
to be consistent for them, and Doyle like your top
three guys have to be consistent on base moving guys
when they when it comes back around those kinds of things.
And like I said, if you got a guy like
Tolio who is obviously off to really slow start, but
he had a better day today. Goodman, you get some
guys that pop, it can all come together. But once again,
(12:25):
you can't have several disappearing acts all one time.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
But this is why I feel you invest and those
guys who can hit. I mean, you talk about Chris Bryant,
and he's not the only guy, right. But the idea is,
you bring guys who are going to really press opposing pitches, right,
You're gonna make them get high in their pitch count.
Speaker 5 (12:43):
And usually when guys get high in pitchcount, you know
what happens.
Speaker 6 (12:46):
They started to press just like quarterbacks, right, and then
now they're serving them up across the plate. Now you
can put the ball in play. They don't have to
be a home run. And that's the thing that drives
me nuts about about baseball and the way the game
is now. It's almost like and basketball. Everyone wants to
be a three point shooter. Just put the ball on
the turf, right, I mean a single little double, get.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
Guys on and then move them around the horn.
Speaker 6 (13:10):
To me, I know it sounds like a really simple idea,
but I strongly believe if the Rocky is invested in
that even if that meant that you didn't win a
lot of games.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Hell, at least it's exciting for you to watch.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
I'm not gonna argue with you.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
I'd say for me, the starting places is to try
to work on the strikeout counts, right, I mean, it's
you're right to make pictures.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Work is a good good place to start, right.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
I mean you're getting deeper end accounts, which means you're
gonna run them into their bullpen faster you're tired too, Yeah,
I mean that that would be that's ideal, But I
mean your double Ditch just strikeouts every night.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
It feels like that.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
And I know that's not like quite accurate, but it
feels like that, especially when you get on the road.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
Man, I mean you're opposing pictures.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Zach Wheeler for the Phillies had ten strikeouts before you
even got to the bullpen.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
The starting pitcher had ten strikeouts.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
So that you can it be that team ever and
win consistently in this lead.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
You know what that's like.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
You're saying so many strikeouts.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
I just kind of think about dating, like if that
was in the world of dating, like like the Rockies
were dating.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
I mean, that's a whole lot of strikeouts.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
I mean, look, I'm a totally a dater, right, Like,
it's a lot of strikeouts. There's a few old runs
in there to.
Speaker 7 (14:18):
Kind of you know, so that's not right? How many
more wings take content? It's like Michael Jordan said, you.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Know, like.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Michael Scott, I mean, I mean, yeah, and it's that
that that is that is part.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
We was watching Moneyball, I think it was last night
or whatever. Yeah, you had any deeper in the count?
Speaker 1 (14:45):
You know, I mean, where's our and when is Star
Wars gonna come play first base for us?
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Who is that?
Speaker 5 (14:50):
Who he's playing?
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Had a Burgh, had a Berg That's who he played? Yeah,
that's right. I forgot that he was in that. That's
that's a good one.
Speaker 5 (14:55):
First basement.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
You couldn't feel I know, well, the o the hands
throws the baseball and he's like, how's your hand feeling?
Speaker 2 (15:04):
To play first place? It's easy, tell about it.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
It's incredibly difficult, but.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Funny, and I don't know how accurate it is with uh,
you know, Brandon Bean trading off players so that they
would start Hadiberg right, Yeah, not exactly was so great.
He's like, you can't you can't pen That's like you
can't play Payna.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
He's like, I'm playing penya like mb I traded him
to such a ball or move.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I mean, I get, you know, you can get in
a live with what we're trying to do with it.
But I mean I think that's the thing. I mean,
at least in that particular case, the Athletics, uh then
actually having a home city in Oakland had a vision
right and and to me that's sort of that's sort
of my problem with the Rockies is what is the vision?
I knew what it was when you had Toulo and
and and and Cargo and uh, you know, and around
(15:52):
on all the custody. I knew what the vision was.
It was Nick was talking about, it's entertainment. If we're
gonna put up a bunch of runs, and we'll hope we.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
You know, we'll hope we get the pitching good enough
to get wins. I don't both division is now.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
I mean with the pitching, the start pitching especially has
been decent, but the bullpen still implodes and the hitting
has just not been well.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
The vision, this is how I view it.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
The vision for the Rockies is the pitching is finally
coming into form, and you're gonna be a very good
defensive team, right, You're you're hopefully gonna be one of
the lowest error teams in the league. You're gonna be
very consistent on that that fact, and you kind of
build off of that.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
But the problem is is you still.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Need a little bit more to consistently win, and especially
against the better teams. Yeah, you're gonna once in a
while win a series or two against teams like the
Athletics because maybe they struggle as well or whatever I mean.
In this case, you know, agetting the Athletics had a
three had three runs going into the extra innings. It
wasn't like they and they're their best hitter. Rooker didn't
have a single hit. He had over five with two strikeouts.
(16:47):
That for me, if you'd have told me that Rooker,
who mashes everybody, comes to course field and goes ohver
five with two strikeouts and be like, gey, Rocky's probably
won this game. But again, Rocky is their best need
to show up. But yeah, they've had they've had moments
where they said exactly what they were trying to do.
They were just going to try to score more runs
than anybody else, But again, pitching wasn't there. I actually
(17:08):
liked this iteration better because I think the bats will
come around.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
I like that you can start with defense and pitching.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
That was the first question, because from that you can
really build a contender, and that's what we're really ultimately
looking for.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
That was that was literally the next question. Do you
have more.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Hope that the hitting suddenly catches on them slowly pitching
suddenly catches on Yes.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
I absolutely feel that way.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
I don't I know, as we said here right now
and coming into today, they had the fewest hits in
all of Major League Baseball, but they had the best
era of all starting pitching baseball.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
Yeah, which is which is wild?
Speaker 6 (17:39):
I mean, does it make you feel any better about
how the Rocky started? Knowing though, as though the Braves
are zero to seven they haven't won a game.
Speaker 5 (17:50):
Does that does that kind of mellow you out a little?
Speaker 6 (17:53):
Or does it say, well, you know what, the Braves
they played the Padres and they played the Dodgers, so
it kind of balance itself.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Hope in this economy. Yeah, if you don't have hope, man,
what do you hope? That's the hope? It will kill
you that's what said, yeah, or was it in Avengers
with like don't give me hope? Yea, yeah, saying but look.
Speaker 5 (18:15):
Yeah, maybe there is.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
We're on an upper tradection TOTALLYA.
Speaker 7 (18:18):
Doubled his batting average today it's one forty.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Eight on the season. You're so sarcastic.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 4 (18:25):
Yeah, I I actually do, I do have hope. The
issue with your reference there is is Atlanta. Their ceiling
is so muny significant and they're don't even a cone.
They're gonna they're gonna get him back some more time
in May and then they're really gonna probably take off.
But that that's the thing with Atlanta. You already knew
they had good pitching, knew the good hitting, you talked
(18:46):
about it. They took on two teams that are both
gonna be playoff bound. The Rockies do play the Philip
Phillies are really good. And then that's that's definitely not
to get over.
Speaker 6 (18:53):
In the starting pitching. That's the thing where you're talking
about hope. There's the Rocky starting pitching did well against
the Phillies batting.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Order absolutely, which which is Murder's row.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
Yes, which so once again, could we change it from
hope to promise.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Is that fair enough?
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Or it feels early like that. That's the tough thing
about baseball is like what promise? Right?
Speaker 4 (19:16):
We're seven games into the season, so it's you said,
though the great.
Speaker 6 (19:20):
Defense got great starting pitching the basket?
Speaker 5 (19:23):
Wake up.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
I am an optimus by nature, but how dare you?
Speaker 2 (19:28):
I am an optums by nature?
Speaker 4 (19:30):
But there are some people out there that feel like
this is the same old, same old, And I can't
blame them for feeling a little bit tired of the
rents repeat cycle of what the Rockies are every single year.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
So do the Rockies need to pull out? Jobu?
Speaker 4 (19:44):
They have them out obviously. Just don't bring the Kentucky's
Fried Chicken bucket because that's.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Not that's not.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Coming through those doors.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
But no, we gotta gonna get over the plate, bro
that worst.
Speaker 6 (20:03):
Guy.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Any triple digits. We can throw hard, gett to get
over the plate. You know, we can get the ride
Edwards pitching instructional video. They can show how you did
the first. We get that out there, We're good to go.
Is the Broncos country tonight right here on KOA. We'll
be back after this.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
It's what all bright Nick ferguson Rockies Opening Days. You
pro day today, busy day around the Denver sports scene.
Go right out of k wait comes Parrel hot Line though,
and bring on the voice of your Colorado Rockies Jack Corey.
Speaker 5 (20:32):
Jack.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
How you doing man?
Speaker 3 (20:34):
I'm good, Benjamin, how are you now?
Speaker 2 (20:37):
You know, a little dejected?
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Had that?
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Like they say, it's the hope that'll kill you, right,
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Of hope you start getting those later innings they get.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
To tie it up. You get a little bit of hope,
and then uh, you know, then the extras happened.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
Rockies.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
You know, the starting pitching has been just just great
this year, but for whatever reason, and a reverse of
recent trends, it's the bats that haven't woken up for
the Rockies ear leading.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Yeah, you know, I mean it's a it's a combination
of things. They've faced some pretty good pitching in the
first two series and the whether that we had today
that that adds to it, and just some young guys.
You know, baseball is so contagious. You know, when you're
(21:24):
going well, it's like everybody seems to be going well,
and when you scuffle offensively, it just, like I said,
becomes contagious. There's just way too many people doing the
same thing. But there's no doubt. I mean, they're going
to have to figure it out sooner rather than later,
(21:45):
or you know, we're.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
All going to be frustrated.
Speaker 6 (21:49):
Jack Nick Ferguson Here, My question is that, hey, what's
going on now? Obviously the Rockies had an opportunity to
really kind of get dig themselves out of this. Oh,
but I'm just trying to find any explanation and maybe
you can help me understand how did they the Fishes
blow that call, because.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Well I'm trying to figure that out.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Well, you know, if for the people who listened to
Jerry and me do the game. I don't know that
I've ever criticized the review system as harshly as I
did today. I mean, that was but beyond egregious. I
(22:33):
mean it just common sense tells you that when the
guy tried to call for it to be stuck in
the fence and didn't get a response from the umpires
on the field, and he just reached down and picked
up the ball without any problem whatsoever. The ball wasn't lodges,
(22:54):
it was sitting in a depression of you know, in
the mud, there on the wall learning track. That was
just a terrible call. Like you said, the Rockies still
were able to score but and tie the game. But
for as many good things of late as some of
the things they're doing with replays and replay reviews and
(23:16):
next year when I think the automatic strike zone will
be a part of the game, they missed that one.
They missed that one badly.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
Sure, sure appeared like I talked with Jack Rgivos to
the Colorado Rocky, so you know Rocky again. I hate
to keep picking on the bats, but we got what
ten runs with last five games? Yeah, up against pitching,
I get it, the weather, I get it. But what
other ways can you wake up young bats? Like, do
these guys need to be taking longer and just strike
counts and try to wear these pitches down. Is there
(23:48):
anything that they can do to get a mental edge
until they get the bats clicking.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
Yeah, you know, that's a great question. Benjamin bud Block
and I were talking about it in his office this morning.
First of all, in baseball, you know, timing is so much.
I mean, yeah, they're not hitting now. If they went
through a stretch like this of scoring ten runs in
(24:15):
seven games or whatever this exact number is. In late June,
people go, oh, they're in a little bit of a slump,
and it's you know, it doesn't create an issue when
it happens coming out of the gate. It does raise
everybody's concern that, oh, man, if they're doing this now,
they're going to do it all year. But there are
(24:38):
things they need to do. And quite honestly, as Buddy
and I were talking, and granted we're we're on the
other side of the dividing line of age.
Speaker 5 (24:49):
But.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
It's different coaching the modern player. And I don't think
it's just in baseball. I mean, to get to the
Major League of whatever your sport is is a tremendous accomplishment.
And when you go through a struggling period for a
(25:12):
time in your game and coaches are saying, well, maybe
you need to change this or change that. Their abilities,
their confidence in their abilities that got them to the
highest level of their sport. They're not like, oh, yeah, okay,
I'll do whatever you say.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
You know that.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
They're more the idea, hey, I'm going to figure this out.
I'll be okay, And sometimes they're not okay, and they
could use it a little bit of a different approach,
and sometimes you have to really get to a very
low point before you you're willing to make that adjustment.
(25:54):
And it's not just in baseball, it's in all the sports.
That's that's the modern athlete.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
Well to try to pick up on something more more
positive on this kind of you know, gloomy Friday based
on the weather. Let's try to focus on something that's
positive about the Rockies, And for me it's the starting pitching.
And for me, I like to say, what those guys
are doing a great job. And for Rockies fans, is
(26:23):
it possible despite what the team's record is being one
and six, knowing that you're starting pitching goes out there
and they give you six and two third innings of
great solid pitching. Is that something to give not hope,
but promise for the season moving forward?
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Yeah, Nick, I think you're hitting the spot. I mean, yeah,
you're you're hitting may go up and down. Your bullpen
will have it solid moments and it's difficult moments. But
if you don't have consistent, consistently solid starting pitching, you're
(27:01):
just not going to win in Major League Baseball, and
the Rockies the last couple of years because of injuries
and maybe not having the right people in place. It's
it's tough to win when you know you're down five
to nothing in the second inning as your starter couldn't
get it done, or that kind of process. If you will,
(27:24):
and now, if we can have the Rockies keep these
guys healthy. You know, Marcus and Sensatela have been solid
so far. That's two good outings by Ryan Feltner. Freelan's
been terrific. You know that that gives you a lot
(27:47):
of hope. And and I know for myself, I'm really excited.
You know, the the Rockies Bo Nicks, if you will,
Chase Dolander is going to pitch Sunday. You know, their
number one pitching prospect. You know, you want somebody to
lead your club. Dolander thinks he can be that guy.
(28:08):
He's got a lot of talent, so it's gonna be
fun to watch him. But yeah, right now they're gonna
have to really rely on the starting pitching to keep
him in games until the offense gets itself going.
Speaker 1 (28:24):
And has a been all bad news for the office.
There have been some bright spots. Goodman has looked it
looked pretty good. Not this other today, but but has
looked good prior to that maniac Martinez. There's been some
bright spots and you got to figure that that McMahon
and totally are going to continue to strike out at
the rates that they've been striking out at.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Yeah, I think that's that's an excellent assessment, you know.
And and Tovar and Doyle. Uh, it was funny. They
they didn't hit very much at all on the trip,
at least in terms of base hits, but they weren't
striking out a lot. They were putting them all and
play and sometimes it's just you go through those stretches.
(29:04):
You hit the ball hard, but you hit it at somebody,
or the wind knocks it down and keeps it in
the yard, those kinds of things. Yeah, there's enough talent.
You can never have enough, but there is enough talent
visible in Doyle and Tovar and Tolia and Goodman and McMahon.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
You know.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
I think Jordan Beck will give them an opportunity. I
think we'll see Zach Dean another one of our top prospects,
sooner rather than later. I think one of the things
that I tell people right now is, yeah, you want
them to win and you want to get excited and
all of that. But this team will get better as
(29:50):
the year goes on, and it may have a much
different look by the time the end of the year comes,
and they're getting better with these younger guys coming on.
You know, transitions are tough, especially in baseball when sometimes
the big dollar teams take advantage of their circumstances. Legally so,
(30:15):
but take advantage of their circumstances. Well, you got to
You got to develop your kids and be successful with them,
and I think the Rockies are getting closer to making
that happen.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Well, Jack, it's always great to hear from you.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Next next time we get a chance to talk, I
want to talk about salary cap and baseball because I
think that's coming and we just don't have time to
get to that today, but I'd love to get your
thoughts of that the next time.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
All right, Yeah, that would be great.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Yeah, that's that's an issue that is only going to
grow larger as we go through this year and into
next year with the players union contract coming to an
end after next season.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
Well, we'll get into that next time we get a chance.
That's a voice the Rocky Jack Corgan. We always appreciate
the time, brother.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
My pleasure. Benjamin. Good to talk to you as well. Nick.
We'll catch you on the next one.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Yes, sir go Rockies. We gotta go out and check
in with traffic with dave O Brian. He's been all bright.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Nick Fergus's got back there behind the glass five six
six nine zero.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
The text line Rockies lose six to three home opener.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
You and I were out at Colorado's pro Day today
in Colorado Showcase catch.
Speaker 5 (31:21):
Day show can't call it a pro day, it was.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
It was a showcase showcase.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
And I will say that for all the pro day
slash showcases I've ever been to, that one certainly had
the most production value you should do or coming out
to like a rap soaw had.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
His own entrance and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
That's certainly not something I've seen in a pro day
slash showcase before.
Speaker 5 (31:40):
Well, see what I was telling everyone, what did you expect?
It is cu he is to do.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
The pageantry, the image in the process.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
A third co coach prime. So the idea is, if
you're going to do something, you might as well go
all in. What's the use of being one foot in
one foot out right? You're only gonna have your showcase.
He's only one time, right right, so you might as
well just do it up.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
And I got some great interviews. We're gonna be playing
those here in the next couple of hours. Talking with
you know, we were out there. We got a chance
to our buddy Justin Adams, got to sit down with him,
talk to him about it a little bit, got to
talk to sit down with some of these players that
were going through these processes.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
BJ Green, Crumble Cookie, extraordinari.
Speaker 5 (32:21):
Well he spoke truly to your heart in your stummach
right then, and there you were.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
You were on like trying to talk to you about
health foods and stuff, and he and I were like, no,
let me get them crumbled cookie.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
This guy each four Crumble cookies before games.
Speaker 5 (32:33):
Yeah, he does. But you know, listen to the interview.
Speaker 6 (32:36):
It's something special and unique about each one of these
players as they're trying to live out their childhood fantasy.
But when you listen talk about the time at CEEU
and talk about Coach Prime, you could tell he's doing
things the right way.
Speaker 5 (32:51):
And then for me, that's the most important thing.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
Yeah, all eyes were on shoot were Sanders Travis Hunter.
Hunter did not do any workout, but did run some
routes and I will tell you, like Ron, he was crisp,
he was sharper in those routes like he was. There
was a lot of I think people were watching Shador absolutely,
but there was a lot more buzz behind where I
was standing at the time on just watching Travis Hunter
(33:14):
just just put on a clinic.
Speaker 6 (33:15):
Because it's it's amazing because they're are not too many
players like that. I mean, when you think about Champ,
you think about PS two, you think about Travis, and then.
Speaker 5 (33:26):
I go way back to like Jim Thorpe.
Speaker 6 (33:29):
There are not too many players that have and possessed
with that type of guy given athleticism. So this is
why I said, Man, when we see athletes doing certain things,
sit there, love it up and just kind of absorb
it because we're not going to see that all the time.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
One of the more interesting things Joe Shane at the
league meetings in Florida said that Brian Davil doesn't do
pro days. Dave All was asked on Tuesday whether he
would be president for Colorado's Pro day, and he told
the assembled New York media, no, pro dae No, and
you'll never guess who was it c U's Pro DA Briday.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
Well, you know what, there was a lot of individuals
from the Giant staff from top to bottom, and you
could say, well, did they come to see Shador? Did
they come to see Travis? All I could All I
can say is that you know they were here because
they know they have to make a big jump this year.
(34:28):
Both Joe Shane and Brian Dabele and one or both
of those players could be an intricate part and the
franchise kind of turning things around.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Yeah, and it'd be fascinating to see where they go.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
We come back, we're gonna get into some of the
coverage we did out there at Colorado's Pro Day Colorado Showcase,
excuse me today, we'll get us some of the player interviews,
and we got an interview with former Titans general manager
Ran Carson, So you guys want to stick around for
that as well.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
You listen to Broncos Country tonight right here on KAWE
