Speaker 1 (00:00):
Broncos Country Tonight, Budge been all right, sax Se years
back there five six, six nine Zeros text launch short
show Rocky Edition, and I had some decent texts coming
in there. Somebody asked me to give me a list
of five players that you can save almost for certain.
I don't know what almost for certain would be. They
are for certain, You're not, but that one of these
(00:21):
five players would be the Broncos first pick, including if
they traded back to twenty. I'll do something like that
later on of the week. I'll give you. I'll give
you five options that I think are probably the five
options for the Broncos in that range, and they're going
to be names. I mean, to be honest with you,
I would say four of the five I think you've
probably already heard at one point or another from me
(00:44):
from me here on the show. I don't think there's
I think they're pretty guiled in at this point. I
think they understand that they're going to be reactive. I
talked a little bit earlier about the variants on boards
after pick twelve, so that there's a little bit of
guesswork involved. But I think they think they've got a
pretty good pulse on the direction that that's going to go.
(01:05):
And I think they kind of know what a one B,
you know, with what they're doing there, and uh that
you know, the trade back is an option if they
get the right offer for somebody trying to come up
maybe for a quarterback, that would allow them to you know,
to move back and what what that option would be.
So we'll get into that, uh and those possibilities a
little bit later in uh the week. We've got some
(01:28):
short shows because Rocky's taking on the Dodgers most of
the week. Full show on Thursday, though, that'll be that'll
be good, But rest of the week, well, short shows,
and we'll have an opportunity to sneak some of that in.
So without further ado, let's get to the NFL six pack.
It's time for the NFL six path. I'm going to
trade at here insight and insight information you can't find
anywhere else. I know the top six NFL headlines.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
What kajohna Carter out of Penn State went number one
overall thirty years ago this draft and is the last
running back to ever go number one overall this year,
it doesn't look like we'll see that street come to
an end with Kim where the heavy favorite to go
number one overall to the Tennessee Titans. My question to
(02:12):
you being, will we ever see a running back go
first overall? Again, considering it's not happening this year, in
a year where it's a weaker quarterback draft, weaker draft overall,
and a draft with a special running back prospect.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, it's tough. I mean without the league pivoting back
to you know, pivoting from away from the style of
play that is going on right now, that'd be pretty tough.
I mean, as it sits right now, Kim Ward's gonna
go number one. And I'll be honest with you, I
don't even think Ashton Channing's in the top ten betting
(02:46):
odds favorites to go number one. And it's a it's
a year where you've got a week quarterback class, a
generational running back prospect, little to know, no generational tackle prospect.
Really let's account Membo. But I mean, you know whatever,
not much passing out and pass rushing outside of a
Carter uh there. And you know, there just really is
(03:08):
not a lot of barriers for the running back going
number one overall. And it's still not gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
I think part of that is also the usage where
where modern NFL rules protect the quarterback, running backs take
wear and tear, and do you want to invest to
pick that kind of money that asset into something that
may or that stands a good shot at getting injured,
whereas a quarterback seems less likely to get hurt.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
So I think there's a lot of things going against
it right now. I doubt that we will see a
situation where a running back goes first overall any type soon.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
I agree, And the lesson from Saquon Barkley I think is, hey,
it's worth maybe investing a lot of running back if
you have the ecosystem around those guys to really shine.
If you're picking number one overall, it's safe to say
you're rass through ecosystem is in pretty terrible shape.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
You'd have to find somebody who's got a quarterback that
happened to get hurt that's coming back.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
You know.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
I feel like the Chiefs Mahomes gets hurt, they happen
to lose all the rest of their games because you
know what, even in that situation, what you're probably going
to have to is that team trading out at number one.
So there's just I think there's too many conditions for
that to ever be a thing.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Again, Yeah, you need the quarterback you need Like Dallas
Cowboys offensive line, I feel good about it's too far wretched.
Two cam Loard talking about the draft here, the guys
that we know will be in attendance are cam Ward,
Jalen Milroe, Jackson Dart, Travis Hunter, Matthew Golden, Teteroa, McMillan,
Abdul Carter, Ashton, gent Will Campbell, Mason Graham, Tyler Booker,
(04:44):
Jahad Campbell, Malachi Starts, mikel Williams, Will Johnson, Josh Simmons,
and Shamar Stewart.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Who of that.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Group in the green room do you think is going
to be selected first and who is going to be
the Aaron Rodgers of the bunch and have to hang
out there for the longest period of time.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
I think both answers a quarterbacks. I think cam Ward
will be the first one selected and I think Jalen
Milro will be the last of that group.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
So you're not buying with Jalen re Milroe being invited.
There's been some buzz about whoa could this guy go
in the top twenty picks to the Steelers or something.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Are you not not buying that high? I'm not put
And in fact, I don't think of all the quarterbacks
the Steelers would do it. I don't think that's the
direction they would go. Maybe if Jackson Dark goes to
the Saints and Shadoor Sanders goes to the Giants, then
maybe they do that. But right now, Steelers, as this
thing's going on, it's become a parent that Vermonrod just
doesn't really want to go to Pittsburgh. You know they're
(05:36):
gonna either have to take one more run at convincing
him or tell them they look retire. We're moving on.
They got to figure something out because Kenny Pickett is
not I mean not Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, excuse me.
He's not worth going into a season as your starter
if you're not gonna get anywhere with that. So I
Jalen Milroe. Probably the thing about Milroe, if you draft
(05:59):
him ease, you're hoping you can turn him into a quarterback.
He's got wheels and he's got a deep ball, which
reminds you of somebody named Russell Wilson. And you know,
in a lot of ways. But you're hoping you turned
him in a quarterback. If not, you could probably make
him a running back. And so there's at least a
fallback option there.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
You went a different route for me.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I was gonna say, you know, great runner who can't
throw the ball. They had that guy last year.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
You know why not.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Just Justin Fields got on to Justin Fields exactly. You
were gonna go, well, they wanted to win games three.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Next one up for you here, The Chicago Bears signed
Kyler Gordon to a three year, forty million dollar deal
that will make him the league's highest paid slot cornerback
at thirteen point three million dollars a year. What do
you make of Gordon now being the league's best compensated
slot corner and what are your expectations for this Bears
(06:51):
defense under new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Well, well, let's start with with that. And that's the
going rate you pay for a corner, and if you've
got good corners, you pay them you just do like
that's that's the thing. Let's start with that. Happy for
Kyler Gordon. Then you got that dead contract deserved it.
That's if you've got a great slot corner. You got
a great corners, you pay them period. As far as
the rest of it goes, you know, this defense is
(07:17):
going to be a bit of an adjustment in terms
of what it was before. It used to be a
read and reacts Matt Eberflu's defense, which is basically a
Cover two variant. You said in four guys at the quarterback,
that's it. Everybody else is dropping back into zones. Your
your corners are usually low zone guys with your safety
is getting a lot of responsibility in this Now you're
(07:37):
going to have with what Dennis Allen wants to run,
something that's a lot more attacking and aggressive. They want
to disrupt the run game and force you into pass situations,
and they try to bring pressure on the quarterback. So
it's gonna be a little bit different philosophically. It's like,
you know, we talked about going from Vic Fangiota vs.
Joseph here right or the geral Vero, and then you
(07:59):
know the basically Vic's defense to their philosophical opposites. Right,
Vic wants to send the least amount of people He's
got to drop everybody else back. Vance wants to send
everybody put his guys on an island. You know, VIC
wants middlefield open, vance, middlefield close. It's going to be.
The one thing about Dennis Allen is he is a
middlefield open defense. It's usually a two deep man under,
you know kind of deal. But they'll send they'll send
(08:19):
guys no blitz. I think Dennis Aund's a very good
defensive coordinator. I don't think he needs to be a
head coach. I think he's done that twice and both
times you know, lost the locker room was a failure.
But I think he's a good defensive coordinator. And i'd
be you know, Chicago's defense being more aggressive in a
division that employs some pretty aggressive defenses. I think that'll
be I think it'll be good for him.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Yeah, and I like to fit in Chicago too. You know,
with a fairly expensive secondary. You got Gordon, You've got
Jayalen Johnson on the other side now too. I think
Dennis Allen one thing he did pretty consistently in New
Orleans was maximizing that secondary talent and getting the most
out of him. I think they're always among some of
the best coach secondaries in the league.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
It typically is aggressive between the twenties and then conservative
in the red zone and usually his defenses usually have
good red zone statistics because of that, So they'll be
going from a full bend don't break under eber Flus
to an attacking defense that shifts to bend don't break
once it gets out of the red zone. Loved hear it? Four.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Eastern Michigan has announced that Max Crosby is going to
be the assistant GM of their football program. We recently
saw Steph Curry take on one of these GMing roles
as an active NFL player, but Max Crosby is the
first active NFL player to take on one of these
positions inside their former college program. What do you make
of this invention of assistant GM or GMing positions in
(09:41):
college football?
Speaker 4 (09:42):
And what do you.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Make of these former professional athlete alums going back to
their schools to take on those roles.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Well, some of these suppear to be ceremonial and this
particular one as well. Is Max Crosby really taking time
out of the season a breakdown tape on high school
prospects for Eastern Michigan? Or is the a public relations
move that injects some juice back into things that a
famous alumni one of our most famous Alumnisu, he's you know,
getting back with the program. And oh, by the way,
(10:11):
it might be an easy way to squeeze some juice
out of donors, get some more money in Here's for
NIO collective. So I would suggest that in a lot
of these cases, especially guys that are currently active, this
is a little different than like Andrew Luck taking over Stanford.
Guys that are active football players are gould to be
focused on that and not breaking down some high schoolers tape.
You know, I make some calls, maybe make a zoom call,
(10:33):
that kind of stuff. But this is a this is
a move to help bring money into the program and
not Max Crosby running it as a general manager. And
on that money front, you know, I imagine some of
that money will probably be coming from Bax Crosby. It
probably opens up that avenue a little word love me.
I mean, you know, let me throw another donation. Oh
we need this extrae hundred thousand dollars to get this kid.
I got that. Let me let's do that.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Yeah, I'm the assistant GM. I want to make sure
we get good talented the I mean, you know that's
part of your Oh, it's absolutely Yeah, talent acquisition or whatever.
That's the the role of that job in college football.
That requires spending money now, and Max Crosby's got money
to spend.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Is one of the highest paid defense fends in the league.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Look, I think Max Crosby is an absolutely phenomenal NFL player.
I think he's hilarious. If you ever met Max Crosby,
I will tell you he's hilarious. I don't think he's
a general manager, and I'll leave it at that.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Four.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
I just said for him on that five.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Dak Prescott is recovering well from his season ending hamstring
injury reported reportedly and today said he could play if
the season was starting tomorrow. How big of a concern
do you think is Prescott coming back from this season
ending hamstring injury when we know those hamstring injuries can
nag a bit? And what are your expectations for the
(11:48):
twenty twenty five Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Not concerned about the injury, I think Dallas' offense is
going to be significantly better than people think it's going
to be. I think Dallas is going to be a
better football team than people think they're going to be
this coming year. To tell division, very tough division. You know,
you've got a Washington team, it's good. You got a
Philly team, it's good. But I think Dallas is gonna
surprise some people this year. I think Brian Schottenheimer is
is a better head coach than he is offensive coordinator
in terms of his personality. Love who they've brought in
(12:13):
on both sides of the ball. I think they're their personality.
The personality fits with dak He. The only concern I
have is all the weight he dropped. He lost a
ton of weight, and that may help him out a
little bit this coming season. You know, maybe he'll put
the weight back on in the right places. He'd got
a little pudgy, to put it charitably, and I think
that will help him out. I think they've got to
find another running back to, you know, to put in
(12:34):
that backfield besides Davante, because they're gonna be a power
run football team this coming season, and so Chavante is there,
it's gonna be one. Will it be o'maro and Hampton
out of North Carolina? Will he? Will he be the
guy that they had in there? It'll be interesting to see.
But I believe that they're going to be a power
run football team this year. While everybody else is getting
lighter on defense, they're going to get stronger on offense.
And I think that's gonna make him better. We'll see,
(12:56):
but I have no concerns about that. And again I
think Dallas is a sleeper team that's coming. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I wonder about the defense for sure, but I think
the offense should be a lot better, especially when it
seems like every direction there or every player they're connected
with in that top twelve is an offensive talent, whether
it be you know, a great offensive lineman to try
and replace Zach Martin or minimize how big of a
void that is. And then you know a Mario and Hampton.
(13:21):
You listed Ashton Gent He's been connected to them some
the receivers Matthew Golden and Ted McMillan. I think any
of those guys could be really appealing in that offense
and help open things up for ceede Lamb and help
them get even more bang for their buck there.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yeah, the other side of this year is eber Flus,
and we just talked about is now their defensive coordinator
that's get higher. So Dallas is going to be a
lot more Bend, don't break that's going to give the
offense time to you know, as a power offense. That's
going to give them time to you know, to go rest,
to get back up there and do things push people around.
So I think it's going to be fascinating. They definitely need,
you know, they need some offensive line help, a speedy
receiver and a power back and we'll see. I mean,
(13:54):
the last time I think it was that Dallas went
after those three things. You wound up with what Emmett
Irvin and and then you had what's his name the
offensive tackle there for Dallas back in the glory days.
That ask to Larry Allen. That's time they made a
triumvirate like that they you know, so I think, and
they've already got ceedee lamb. So I think again, I
think Dallas's primed to be a sleeper team's coming here.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Yeah, replacing Zach Allen.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
That's going to be a tall, tall, tall tesk they
got They just lost to Larry at barbaby for's Zach
Mark and Martin.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
I'm thinking Larry Allen.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Six.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Today, Patrick Peterson signed a one day contract to retire
with the Arizona Cardinals. Will Patrick Peterson in your opinion
make it to the Hall of Fame, and is he
the second greatest cardinal of all time? I don't think
he's in the conversation for first with Larry Fitzgerald, But
does he earn that number two?
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Spool? I think he's in that conversation. Oh really? Oh yeah?
I mean you're talking about a guy within what seven
straight Pro Bowls, three first Team All pros, probably should
have had another First team All Pro in there and
got denied. If you look at the twenty twelve season,
he had seven interceptions, seven fumbles caused, five fumble recoveries
in that year and he did not get on the
All Pro team that year, which is absurd. He is
(15:05):
thirty six interceptions for his career, twelve fubble recoveries, two
pick sixes. He chipped in a few sacks here, I
think for them. Yeah, there's no way he doesn't make
the Hall of Fame, and he's got to be up there.
And the only reason Larry's got the longevity, you know,
on top of it, he probably could have played another
(15:25):
couple of years. The other thing about Patrick Peterson that's
so interesting is how reliable he was. He appeared in
all sixteen games for the first but seven years of
his career. Then he had an injury after ten games
that year, and then he comes back and hit played
sixteen games, thirteen games, seventeen games, and seventeen games. So
over the course of his career he missed nine games,
(15:48):
six of which came in one season when he was
hurt in twenty nineteen. And he probably he's thirty three
years old. You saw him against with the Steelers last year.
It wasn't the same, but that Minnesota year he had
the year before that, he was still still pretty He
could probably have a job in the league if he
wanted it, especially if a Tampa two team, like if
Dallas came calling, you know, to put him in as
a low zone corner. He could probably have a job.
(16:09):
I think he's just done playing, so yeah, to me,
I mean all one of the old times he's on
the Mount Rushmore of Cardinals, so you know, we hate
doing those on the Amount Rushmore of Cardinals, no doubt,
but yeah, absolutely phenomenal player. And I think people forget
just how good he was, you know, as a player,
because he's so he's sort of removed. He languished in Arizona,
where he wasn't getting a lot of run, and then
(16:29):
you know, people sort of forgot about and they saw
the Pittsburgh stuff last year. It wasn't all that inspiring.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yeah, Arizona a bit of a forgotten franchise, and then
his peak largely overlapped with Richard Sherman, who was such
a you know, vocal, front facing figure always in the media.
I feel like Peterson's dominance that was, you know, just
about equal in that same era and in a man
heavy defense, he was probably having a little more asked
of him, measured up with with Sherman, but still he
was a little overlooked. One thing I think that's also
(16:56):
interesting with him, a bit of a Tyreek Hill situation
in the instead. He was such a dynamic returner early
in his career, best in the league, so electric with
the ball in his hands, incredibly speedy player, great ball ball.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
Carrier, vision and all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
But you don't want to risk injury with him, so
they quickly took him off with special teams and put
him just on defense. I wonder if we're talking about him,
you know in a Corterall Patterson, Devin Hester type way,
if he stayed, is one of those super dynamic kick
returners his whole career, at least the front half of
it when he had that speed, right.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
He led the league as a rookie and four touchdowns
and six hundred nine nine pup return yards. He was
unstoppable back there. The season is ridiculous, Yeah, he was.
He was absolutely unstoppable back there as a punt returner
in for his first two seasons and then you know,
they kind of just shifted him over to mainly be
in the corner. He was a do it all guy.
He did a little bit of everything over the course
of He threw a pass which he did complete, was
(17:50):
a seventeen yard pass. He did run the football. He
ran the football seven times for thirty four yards. He
caught ten passes on twelve targets, most of which came
in one season as they tried to get involved in
the offensive side of the ball to take advantage of
the athleticism on the part return as well. He was
one of those guys who did a little bit of
everything over the course of over the course of his
entire career, and he was treated to get to watch him.
(18:12):
It's a phenomenal player, certainly, a very very fun person. To,
you know, to have watched and seen around the league
and bush him the best of whatever endeavor you know
he has next. Still young, I mean said thirty three,
thirty four years old, and now you know he's got
plenty of life ahead him. What it is he's going
to do next. But yeah, the fascinating fun player, dynamic athlete,
(18:32):
and the first part of the first five years of
his career. My good, it were so good, so good. Yeah,
and great.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
College player too. I mean, cornerbacks don't go top five
very often for a reason. Because of how good he
was in man coverage and then also their returning threat.
He was was one of the guys that went that
high and lived up to it, I mean, one of
the best. Him, Jalen Ramsey, and Sertann are probably like
the three best pure cornerback prospects of the last fifteen
years or so.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Yeah, certainly with the additional size and all that kind
of stuff too. Ramsey, by the way, I think he's
going to get moved here pretty soon. I think he's
about to get traded. Something to keep your eye on
if you're out there watching that stuff. The Dolphins have
been sitting there on that thing trying to get that
thing done for a while, so I would not be
surprised to see him get traded here very soon.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
They've got a lot of moves they need to make,
and this is a really important season for them.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
If they can't get it done this year, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
I think, don't blow that thing up if they don't
get it done this year. So it'll be fascinating. I
don't know where Ramsey's gonna land. There's three or four
teams out there. The Giants were one of them that
was looking at it. We'll see. As they're continuing to
take swings knowing that if they don't win something this year,
or at least, you know, have a winning trajectory this season,
they're all going to be gone. Joe, Shane and Dable
(19:42):
and all those guys be gone anyway. So that's why
they've already taken multiple swings via free agency at the
quarterback position. But they'll they'll draft the quarterback as well, so.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
He has aggressive as the ownership is going to let
you be again. If you're fired, it's not your problem
to deal with. It's the thing we burn up all
our future draft picks.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
It doesn't matter. We're not going to be here to see,
you know, to be a problem anyway. So yeah, I uh,
you know, when Ryan and I were up there at India,
went to went to dinner with some of the brass
and the giants, and you know, this was their plan,
multiple swings at the quarterback position and and all that stuff.
So good to see that sort of coming to fruition.
And we'll see if you know, that comes to future
(20:19):
fruition Throughout the draft. Was the Broncos country tonight right
here on ka
