Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning and welcome to Insight, a show about empowering
our community. I'm Lorraine Baller Tomorrow. Each week we shine
a light on the people and programs making a difference,
from the arts to education, from public health pacific engagement,
and today is no exception. We explore the healing power
of words with the launch of a new community campaign
called Healing Verse Germantown, The Streets are Talking. This poetic
(00:24):
initiative is reclaiming public space and collective voice by bringing
powerful poetry directly to the people. We'll hear from those
involved about how poetry is being used as a tool
for mental wellness, community connection, and cultural pride. We get
ready for something fun for the whole family. One of
Phillies' own, the legendary hip hop artist Freeway, is bringing music, joy,
(00:46):
and vital resource to the city with FreeFest. It's happening Saturday,
August second, from eleven a m To four pm at
the Philadelphia Navy Yard. This free event will include food
and retail vendors, wellness resources, a kid zone, and so
much more. And of course you won't want to miss
the Freeway and Friends Showcase, a high energy performance that
(01:06):
promises to be unforgettable. But first we begin with a
very special story that speaks to legacy, love, and the
power of faith. We'll hear about a meaningful fundraiser honoring
the memory of a remarkable man, a celebrated Philadelphia athlete,
a devoted pastor, and a beloved community leader. A fundraiser
in his name supports the Frederick Douglas Christian School, where
(01:29):
young people are nurtured not only academically, but spiritually and emotionally.
We talk to the organizer behind the fundraiser and learn
how this event is building futures in his name. So
stay with us. Inside starts now. There's going to be
a wonderful day of purpose, remembrance, and community impact at
the seventh annual Herb Lusk Golf Classic for Children, taking
(01:50):
place Monday, July twenty eighth at the Union League Golf
Club at Torresdale, Hosted by Reverend Herb Lusk the third,
in loving memory of his father Herb LUs the second,
the former Philadelphia Eagle and visionary faith leader. This event
brings together civic leaders, athletes and supporters the champion youth
empowerment through education, faith and legacy. Proceeds will benefit the
(02:11):
Frederick Douglas Christian School in Chester, continuing Reverend Luck's powerful
commitment to uplifting future generations. So, Reverend lust the Third,
this event honors your father's legacy, his incredible legacy. What
does it mean to you to personally continue his work
through this golf Classic.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Well, first off, thank you, Lorraine for having me. It's
good to be here with you, And thank you for
your years of empowering our communities and doing all your
great work. So thank you for that. It is amazing
to champion my dad's legacy. As I've said multiple times,
I'm humbled by it. My father did such amount of
great work in forty years, but to be able to
take what he's done and to now push it forward
(02:51):
to future generations is humbling.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Now, the Frederick Douglas Christian School is the main beneficiary
of this event. Why was the school chosen and what
makes its missions?
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Well, it was chosen in Lorraine.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
I remember the exact moment that my father chose Frederick
dullas Christian School. I remember when we drove over there
and he literally described it. He says, Son, this is
a smaller Philadelphia. It's a place where there's great opportunity
he used this phrase that I use now. He said, son,
opposition is never a problem. It's God's opportunity for us
to do something there. And so he saw the brokenness,
(03:25):
he saw the economical issues, he saw the financial challenges,
and I mean, Frederick Douglass, you know, we have currently
fifty four students in there now, but it's a financial burden.
Parents can't get their kids to school. As a matter
of fact, our tuition, believe it or not, I think
is somewhere around twelve fifteen thousand, but they can't afford that.
(03:45):
So this golf tournament is actually what helps supplement that
so we can give kids full scholarships. I mean, these
kids are living in the area where everything's kind of
been stripped from them, and to be able to offer
them some hope is amazing.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
You've got a lot of luminaries joining you. This classic features, yeah,
guest like Seth Joiner, Mike Quick, and coach Dick vermil
who's so awesome. I just saw him at the Boys
and Girls Clubs gala and he is a true community
hero for sure. So tell us more about that.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah, So what my father did is he managed his
relationships while he played football. But then afterwards, so most
people don't know this. He was Actually the Eagles had
chaplain when they won the first Super Bowl. I should
have brought my ring. I wish I had it.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
We'd have been able to take some great pictures with it.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
But even this year, the team still kept in contact
and things of that nature because of the special relationship.
But long ago, when my father retired, he said I'm
going to play three years and quit. Dick Vermill said,
when I'm done coaching, I'm gonna support everything that you're doing.
He has been a constant support. Seth Joyner has been
a constant support other Eagles, Great Eagles, Randall Cunningham and
(04:54):
some others. Donovan McNabb's brother used to work at People
for People, So we've had a great relationship and ship
with the Eagles and other athletes in the Philadelphia area.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
So it's been great.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, that legacy continues. Yeah, for those who can attend,
how can they still support the mission of the Golf
Classic and the Frederick Douglas Christian School.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
So they can go to the Herblusgolf Classic dot com
and they can find out all that information there and
then they can go to FDS Frederick Douglas Christian website
and they can see everything that we're doing. Now we're
not K through eight now, we're K through third grade,
and so what we're doing is we're really focusing on
strengthening those early levels, those early years, so we can
(05:34):
have those children be powerful when they step into the
next level.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Well.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Once again, the seventh annual Herblusk Golf Classic for Children
is taking place on Monday the twenty eighth at the
Union League Golf Club in Torresdale. Yes, and if people
want to sign up, where do they go?
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, they can go again to the Herblusgolf Classic website
dot com and they can sign up. Their still time,
they can still support. If they're not able to come,
they can still support. There's a number people who just
sew into our ministry and what we do with the
Golf Classic is really an extension of our holistic ge ministries,
which I'm the chairman of as well being the senior pastor,
(06:11):
and it's just empowering these broken areas. I mean, we're
mentoring these kids in Chester, but we also have initiatives
on mental health, we have initiatives on gun violence. You're
going to catch me in the street with one of
my good friends, Pastor Greg Stewart, where we are mentoring people,
getting them guaranteed jobs and positions of that nature. So
this is a holistic event. It's going to be a
(06:32):
lot of people there that not only love those kids,
but they love what my father has done through the years,
and they want to help me carry it on.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I can't do it all by myself.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Well, you've created a fine village around the work that
you're doing and the legacy of your dad, the late
Great her Bless the Second. And whenever I have a
pastor in the studio, I always put them on the
spot and ask them to share a little scripture that
fits into the theme of what we're talking about. So
do you have something you could share with us?
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Oh? I do.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Timothy says this that God has not given us the
spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.
Right before that, Paul encouraged Timothy to stare up the gift.
And as I think about even my purpose now, literally
I was Timothy and my father was Paul, and he said,
stair up that gift, son, and what God has given
you to get into these communities, He hasn't given you fear.
You see the opposition, you see the challenges, you see
(07:22):
all the barriers. But he's given you love. He's given
you a sound mind where you can think about how
you can affect lives. So that's my word that we're
not afraid to go into the areas that are broken,
and we're going to use the power that the Holy
Spirit gives us to affect so many different lives. And
I'm looking for things to work out in a stronger
way because of that strength. You gotta watch it, because
(07:43):
once you give a preacher an opportunity to share something.
There's one more I want to throw on that it
Ephesians three twenty. It says, now unto him who is
able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we
can ask or think according to the power that works
within us. And we have so much power. All we
have to do is just I love it.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
I love it. I love that you lifted us up
with those beautiful words and that little piece of scripture.
Wonderful day, wonderful way to start the day. A day
of purpose, remembrance and community impact is also coming up.
The seventh annual Herbluss Golf Classic for Kids for children.
Taking place Monday, July twenty eighth. We thank you so much,
Herb Lusk the third, the Reverend Herbluss the third, who
(08:24):
continues the legacy of his dad and loving memory of
Reverend Herb Lux the second, the former Philadelphia Eagle and
visionary faith leader. This event brings together civic leaders, athletes,
and supporters to champion youth empowerment. We thank you so
much for all that you're doing.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Thank you, Lareene, Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
We'll have more insight after these messages. The
