Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, and welcome to Insight, a show about empowering
our community. I'm Lorraine Ballad Morrow, and as we do
once a month, every month, we have the World Traveler,
the Literary Icon Vaness Lloyd's comebody, Hey Vaness.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good morning Lorraine. Okay, I'm gonna get this right out
the bag. If you have not already voted, do not
call me up.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Do not say I should have, could have? Would it?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Because I'm putting everybody on lockdown who doesn't voot. But
before we get down to business, folks, Lorraine Ballad Morrow
has a new title added to the amazing tapestry of
her life. Drum roll, Hey, we should put that song
of mother in law. Uh, she is now the mother
in law and her delightful son Christopher got married last weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yes, it was fabulous. I was so overjoyed. He's so happy,
She's so lovely, and I had the dress. Okay, it
was fun getting dressed up for the wedding and it
was beautiful and heartfelt.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
And where was the wedding?

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Hell? It was that outside of Detroit.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Oh okay, well, you brought a lot of pizzazz to
that part of the world. But also before I forget
because you know, I started talking and I forget these
important moments. Lorraine Ballot Moral Gonzales also is being honored
by the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia, and this is a
very esteemed award. I mean, so many icons in the

(01:25):
industry here in the Philadelphia area have won this award,
and you're one of the few women who's won that award.
And they're having a big party, an award ceremony on
November twenty seconds. So folks, if you like to honor Lorraine,
you can go out go on line to the Broadcast
Pioneers and you can still get tickets.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
But congratulations, Oh thanks Vanessa. I'm very honored and I'm
looking forward to it and I have a lot of
friends her coming down and it should be a good party.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
In fact, past Shiaki is also being honored and we
worked together as one of her producers at KYW. I've
had so many lives, you know, somebody sat down in
all my career, but this is the best one. And
before I go on to my amazing guests, I just
want to give a shout out to my brother Greg
Lloyd and my sister Michelle Lloyd, who many of you

(02:13):
know from the African American children's book Fair Happy Birthday,
and this is a substitute for not buying a gift.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
So, oh, she's not gonna let you get away with that.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Hey you don't know me.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Well, you've got a wonderful guest, right.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yes, So we're talking elections this morning, and my guest
is Sean Pittman, who is an attorney and political advisor
who's passionate about civic participation. Over the past two decades,
Pittman has been a champion for the underrepresented and a
voice for change. His work in law and politics and
his commitment to public service have earned him widespread recognition

(02:52):
and respect. And he has a new book and full disclaimer,
he is someone who I've been working with for the
past couple of months, so I'm glad that I'm introducing
him to Philadelphia. And his book is Disaffected Access Versus
Apathy Why every election is the Election of a lifetime
And this book is so timely.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Sean, thank you so much for having me, and it
is timely, particularly in this time where it seems that
you know, the people who need to be paying attention
and voting the most are the ones who are doing
it the least, and it seems like there's a system
and systems that want that and yield to that by demand.
So it's an important time that folks really pay attention

(03:34):
to what's going on. And and my book tries to
help people talk to people who don't vote, to try
to really get them to see why they should.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Well, you know, what's interesting about the book is that
it tackles the idea that your vote matters. And you
have all these case studies in the book, stories about
that one vote that changed the result of an.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Election absolute, I mean, and you can see it all
over the country. You can see one vote in Virginia
for a congressional race, one vote in Kentucky for a
congressional race. I mean, in places like Florida, thirty thousand
votes to decide a governor's race and fifty thousand for
Georgia race. That might sound like a lot of votes,

(04:19):
but when there's four million votes, that's not a lot
of votes, right, And then Florida, you know, where there's
three million votes, there's you know, thirty thousand is not
a lot. It's not a lot of votes. So every
vote does count. And the book goes through a bunch
of case studies to illustrate that, why do you.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Think people sit on the fence? I mean some You'd
be surprised as how many people I've met that are
civic minded who don't vote.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
I got to tell you where we are today really
illustrates it in a way that is blatant to see,
and that is people don't trust what they see anymore.
They don't trust what they hear anymore, and that has
now trickled over to what they think about our government

(05:04):
and the process of electing people. And so it's easier
for those people to just let other people deal with
that and go on with their lives. What the book
tries to illustrate is that that's a terrible decision to
make because listen, the more affluent people vote. More affluent
people vote because they understand that it makes a difference

(05:25):
in their lives. And so when we say every election
is the election of a lifetime, that's because these elections
are coming down to decisions that will have something to
do with the quality of your life. And it really
tries to break down issues and the differences and the

(05:46):
folks elected in what they expouse, right, And it's a
great read. For people who vote and people who don't vote.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Well, I was inspired by the book, and I also
want people to remember one vote, every vote does count.
And I'm so happy that you took time out of
your busy schedule. You're down there in Florida, so I
know every vote counts down there, and we look forward
to bring you here to Philadelphi because I understand you
have a relationship with Joanna McClinton and you've been helping

(06:16):
her with her campaign. So Sean, I look forward to
meeting you in person. And again, folks, every vote counts.
As he's illustrated, and the book is called Disaffected access anopathy,
why every election is the election of a lifetime. And
how can we find you? What's your email, social media,
whatever you want to share with people.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, the email is Sean at Pittmandash Law dot com.
Everything can be found on the website Disaffected the book

Speaker 2 (06:46):
