Speaker 2 (00:24):
You just got to get out there and swing and
ding it. Yeah, you know, just guess it's gonna go
out there and try to swing it and ding it.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
All right, welcome in to swing it and ding it.
We are sponsored by Buy My Balls, Bet Parks. We'll
see the line in a little bit with Bet Parks,
Wear SBF and Rita's. Stop by Rita's today and try
the new rocket hop Ice Moose along with Mays and
Matthews on location coming to us from Illinois. How's it
going down there, Danielle Good?
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Actually, it's kind of nice.
Speaker 5 (00:56):
Whether it's like, I mean, still human, but nice little
break from you. But got to go to the course
the other day. Obviously, they have all the big John
Deere tractors and everything all on site, which is cool.
They have one like faux driver with a big golf
volunteer set up on site. Last night we went to
an event called the Big Dig which was on the
John Deere test Site facility, so they had a bunch
(01:20):
of stuff going there. You could test drive like the
different tractors and stuff like that, and then they actually
have a full setup where they were like does anyone
know what's going on here? And I'm like that's whoops,
Like that's a dirt bike setup. And then all of
a sudden they had this kid, Tyler who was just
in the X Games come out. He did a full display.
So the John Dear does an awesome job in terms
of just a bunch of events all week, let alone
(01:41):
the tournament itself. So it's only Wednesday and we've already
done quite a few things.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
So having a good talk, Yeah, beautiful. Excited to hear more.
But now we welcome in Jim O'Connor. Jim, welcome to
swing It and ding It. Jim is from pro Am
for Wishes, an incredible event that is in its forty
ninth years. I'd say it's a pretty big, pretty big
year next year, So welcome to swing ending at you.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, thanks so much, Moos and Harry and Danielle for
having me on.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, no problem, So talk to us about this event,
what this means to you kind of the origines of it.
And because this is not your typical you know, charity event, right,
this this is a multi day, multifaceted event that goes
on each year.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yes, so I think I think the awesome thing, right,
The one great thing about golf is there's so much
charitable you know work we can do, right, whether it
be the PGA Tour all the way down to the
local Monday Monday scrambles. The program for wishnas started forty
nine years ago. Its background was actually for what became
the first tea raising money for that, and it was
(02:46):
at Whitford and a few other courses when it got started.
But in two thousand and six we actually shifted the
charitable component to Make a Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, right,
So just a great cause, and from from that we've
raised eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars in the last
(03:08):
nineteen years, right. And obviously we're coming up on this
event in August, and then next year will be our
twentieth year supporting Make a Wish, and then also our
fiftieth year. So the goal really is going to try
to get to a one million dollars in total donation
for Make a Wish, and I think that'd be pretty
(03:28):
special for everybody. And then just really the background of it,
it's it's an awesome locally run group. We have an
awesome committee of local business people, teachers maybe vets right,
and then members that the further time in donate support.
Penos Goff Club where we're hosting it is very generous
(03:51):
with both their staff and the facilities. So it's really
just a great weekend. I'd like to say it's like
a a member guest on steroids. Right. So when I
started the event, I love member guests and I love
member members. You know, that's kind of the highlight of
the year, and I was like, how can we make
it even better?
Speaker 5 (04:09):
Right?
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Well, I think the one thing is you can get
your spouse there, right, or your friends and things like that.
You get multiple friends, not just one friend like for
a memory like for a member guest. And then I
love music, right, so let's add some music components. So
this year we have three musical acts. We have a
Frank Sinatra singer, and then we'll also have some nineties
(04:32):
slash two thousands kind of rock band Piscotti Boys, and
then also Candy Flip, which was an awesome well still
an awesome band, but really a great band. You know,
traveled from down the shore when I was growing up
to you know, State College. So it's going to be
a pretty fun weekend on Friday and Saturday.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
Now you mentioned you know, member guest on steroids, concerts, parties,
but there's also some serious golf and then isn't there
like a fun role where amateur's breaking eighty on Sunday
might get some special award.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yes, so it's pretty fun.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
So Saturday, we'll have the Sponsors Championship, right, so that'll
be your foursome that you play with the amateurs, and
that's really kind of also the prep work for when
the professionals come in. So it's the Philly Section pros,
and you know, obviously that's a lot of fun because
you get to learn from from those those guys and gals.
(05:24):
You know. I think the nice thing too is everybody
hangs out afterwards, the pros do, and you can share
stories about, Hey, you just talked to so and so
that just got back from the PGA Championship and they
can share their experience. So there is that competitive component too,
and then the fun thing we'll have that the the
one rule is if the amateurs break eighty, they get
to play on Monday, also with the pro So it's
(05:44):
pretty fun. It gets competitive locally for some of the
lower handicaps, and then we also have some fun because
you know, you might have the guy who might be
like a fourteen handicap and have the round of his
life and great eighty and then all of a sudden
he's there with all the guys in long pants and
has to tee it up situations where you know, it
could be a thirty shot difference between from Sunday to Monday,
(06:06):
which is which is always a good afterwards.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Well, I know you've got, you know, tons of great
stories about how this event has impacted people's lives. Just
give us one, you know, maybe that off the top
of your head, you know that maybe has has happened recently.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah, So I think, I think, really, when you I
can't really do justice for what make a wish does,
right and just talking about it, right, you really have
to see it. You're dealing with with children that are
dealing with you know, life threatening or life altering illnesses, right,
So that's that's that's step one. The other thing we
don't really consider is the mental aspect of that, and
(06:45):
not just on them, but on their their their families, right,
their their parents, their brothers and sisters, right, and the
whole goal of make wish. And you can look at
any of the surveys that they've done after wishes, right,
it really does boost that morale of the entire family, right.
It also boosts the morale of the physicians treating the patients, right.
(07:10):
And it's just such a key component. My family and
I we went down to Disney this past year and
it was awesome because we were able to sorry, yeah
but sorry. We went down to Disney and it was
awesome because we were able to really see the impact
(07:31):
and see people from around the world, not just the
United States, right, just granting their wishes and living as
normal and having as much fun as possible. I think
the other interesting component of it is my playing partner,
Sid Tyson. He's a surgeon in South Jersey, but his
(07:52):
daughter was actually a wish recipient right with leukemia. And
Sid's a great man, very charitable to the cause.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Right.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
But you know, it's not about wealth or anything like that.
It's really about getting those children, that getting them away,
getting them an environment where they can you know, be
normal for a little bit of time. And I think
that's really the key.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
And then if you look at I mean make a
wish itself. They granted three hundred and twenty four wishes
last year. I mean that's amazing. That's almost a wish
to day just for our section, right, So I can't
even book a trip somewhere, you know, then they're booking
three hundred and twenty four various witshes with all kinds
of moving parts and pieces. And I know their goals
to get up to five hundred a year, which is
(08:38):
which is.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Awesome, so cool. I saw Michael Rubin in an interview
talking about his involvement with that too and trying to
do more. It's a great, great organization. So for someone
like you, who obviously is passionate about this, there has
to be some golf history. Who know, you're three time
club champ at pen Oaks. Talk about your love for
(08:59):
the game and kind of your history in the game.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah, I started out right. I was kind of played
every single sport growing up, right, But my dad got
me some clubs it was actually the first Bernard Longer
metal woods, so I was kind of like the cool
guy with Wilson medalwoods, the first guy to have that.
And then really it was just you know kind of
in middle school and high school started playing, you know,
(09:23):
it was it was some of the best times of
my life because I would my parents would drop me
off at like seven, I'd play with my buddies. And
then Thursday afternoons, my dad would get off work at
like three, get out a little early. I'd play golf
with his friends, you know, do thirty six and then
they would go out to the bar afterwards, you know,
have a beer and I'd have my coke, and you know,
just some of the great memories. And I think also,
(09:45):
you know, my grandpa was into as well. He would
share awesome stories from you know, Cobs growing up, you
know in the forties and fifties, which was awesome to hear,
you know, kind of that legacy. And then really I
played club golf at Penn State, right was kind of
before the whole tiger wave had had hit, but it
was a lot of fun. We played a lot of
D two do three matches against kind of the local
(10:07):
schools so that was fun and then tried to get
you know, as competitive as a as a father of
three girls under ten can be. And that's you know,
you try and you tinker and things like that, but
it's always fun to you know, compete out there. And
I think that's why I still love it to this day,
because it still gives you the option to compete.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Oh yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
You mentioned your three daughters, and you're also continuing this
love of golf and this golf journey with your kids.
How's coaching them going? You said, one of them listens,
the other two don't. Do you want to call any
of them out on the pod?
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Or oh, I will call them out right now. So
actually I did tell my one daughter. So she's been
struggling for about the last month. She hits it pretty good,
but I don't know if you know, you can beat
habits creep in. So I said, hey, I'll pay you
twenty dollars if you reef Ben Hogan's books. So she's
she's on chapter two right now. The swings like can
starting to look pretty good. So so we're getting there.
But she's got really good hands, good short games, so
(11:02):
you know, we just got to get that ball on
the green and then my eight year old is big.
I don't know where she came from, to be honest,
but she's playing the eight year old ties and we
played a scramble on Sunday and you know, she was
driving greens but then for punny, right, So these are
like the types of things we have to iron out with.
(11:22):
Her game is the she's kind of the pot beater
of the eight year old girl class.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
So you got to get them. Nate Oxman's new book
to Philly Phenoms. I just got a couple of copies.
It seems like a great book for that age group
for sure.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Yeah, you'll be paying her hundred bucks by the end
of the summer to read it.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Yes, that's great. I wish I started at that age.
But you got Michael Little defending this year from Clubhouse
fifty four. Talk about some of the Philadelphia PGA Section
pros that are in the event because they take this
stuff very seriously, this competition.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah, this is one of the bigger events of their calendar, right,
and I think when you look at the course itself,
it's one of the tighter courses in the section, not
the longest, right, So it does open itself up to
some some winners that it's not just a bomb and
galage type game, right, but you got to hit it
straight and then you know, each green complex is unique
and penox it was redesigned about ten years ago and
(12:20):
you might have large screens, but they all have you know,
little pockets and things like that. So how you flight
your shots in you know, distance control is really key.
I think that really lends itself to you know, kind
of a top class winner. You know that the winners
are usually up in the point standings. You know, you'll
have the Zach Oakleys and the Trevor Bensils and as
you mentioned, like little Dave mcnabbs. You know, so you're
(12:43):
definitely getting a high caliber winner. But they the course
can be frustrating, right, so you really need to kind
of keep your keep your focus and realize there are
going to be bogies out there. You know, it's tree lined,
so you know, you hit a just a tough shot
into the trees and you really have to you know,
take your lumps and really focus on the birdies. I
(13:03):
was talking about it early with somebody, but just really
you know, attacking the part fives. I think that's kind
of the key and trying to not make a mess
of some of the tighter holes, including the opening t
shot on the first goal is I live right off
the first hole and it's still I don't know what
to do on that t shot.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
We'll talk about how people can still get involved in
the event, whether from you know, getting playing in the event,
sponsoring the event. What else are we looking for. Obviously
going into next year is a massive year, so I'd
love to try to get you as much as support
as possible.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah, no, that's awesome. Thanks. So right now we're we're
about eighty percent fold, so we still have a few
sponsorships open if you're if you're looking to get involved,
So that's that's key. I think really the biggest thing
we're we could use a title sponsor, so if anyone's
businesses are looking for that. We've had some challenging part
(13:59):
with these It is business has been so fluid to
last you know decade, right, whether coming out of COVID
or you know, you have a lot of acquisitions with companies, right,
so it's affected some of our you know, sponsors and
title sponsors who used to be locally owned now they're
globally owned businesses, so we'd love to have that. But
really you can reach me pro am for wishes at
(14:22):
gmail dot com. We also have a bird ease page.
If you do a bird ease e a S E
and then pro am the number four wishes dot com,
uh that that'll take you there as well. And then really,
I mean, I think from the like I mentioned, the
local community is awesome. The Eagles supply you know, memorabilia
for us. Jason Kelsey's podcast was great to us. Local
(14:46):
restaurants do any gift cards. So really, you know, if
you have some things or you want to get your
business out there. I mean it's a lot of local
business leaders you know, and CEOs and things like that
bringing customers out. So it really is a great opera
going to kind of grow your brand as well. I
think really when you look at it from a from
a business investment standpoint, you have two of the best
(15:07):
brands around, right, the Phillip PGA and then make a wish.
It doesn't get too much better than that. And I
think the other thing when you're look when you're trying
to set up I know you guys have a tournament
coming up, right, it's a lot of legwork, right, So
are our companies are our committee? Is they able to
do a lot of that legwork for you? Right? And
then you can just show up with your marketing teams
and things like that and really, you know, make it
(15:28):
a fun experience for everybody.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
So that's awesome. Yeah, definitely look to get involved. Now,
one quick question for you. The most popular person on
Instagram right now is a man named Yip Strickler. I
don't know if you've seen him, but he's the guy
who digs in on all the member guest uh situations
and possible you know, cheating if you will. I hear
(15:51):
you have an interesting story. But with the great Charles Barklay,
so I h we actually have.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
A controversy right now because somebody's submitted member at my
club too, so we're trying to figure out who the
mole was. But but if I if I talked to Yip,
I would I would call myself out on this. So
a few years back, it was our member guest and
I had played with my college roommate Laradie. He was
a three handicap and I was a scratch at the time,
(16:19):
and it was just one of those years where like
none of the lower handicaps could play. I don't know
if everybody's having babies or what. So, like it was
like us as a team three and the next group
was like sixteen strokes, right, So it's hard to win
a nighthole match when you're giving that many strokes. And
we had lost all five matches. I think I played
pretty good. My handicap actually went down after the weekend
(16:39):
and I walked out and I told everybody, I said,
I'm bringing strokes next year. I'm just letting you know
I'm bringing strokes. So my brother in law, who's a
pretty good athlete, had just kind of started picking up
the game and playing, and he was a thirty three handicap.
And I'll be honest, like yp would call me out
for this. I didn't work with him at all in
the off season, right. It was kind of like once
you hit that like three two week mark, then I'm
(17:01):
gonna start practicing with him and getting him where I
can get him to, like, you know, maybe down to
like a twenty seven twenty six leg tight with just
kind of basic chipping and putting a little bit of hitting.
So we come in and you know, thirty three handicap
and actually Charles Barkley's there playing around, and the owner
of our club goes, hey, Jim, can you sit down
(17:22):
with Charles and just have a beer and just kind
of talk to him? And hey, Jim, you know, Charles's Jim,
he's one of our better players, you know, hangout. So
we're having a couple of beers and Charles goes and me,
he goes, hook, So what do you think about your
chances to win the Memory Guest this weekend? I said, well,
I brought my brother in law over there. He's a
thirty three handicap and Charles goes, there's gamesmanship and there's cheating.
(17:45):
That sounds like mother cheating to me, and my brother
in law goes, Charles Barkley thinks we can win. I go,
you were brought for a reason by Fred. So my
brother in law's nickname is Strokes the club now, because
you know, I said, bringing Strokes with me, So so
it Strokes and we actually did it. We did end
up winning. And I remember the guy shaking my hand
(18:08):
and got you finished second place because you you you
did it exactly how you needed to do it to
win the So so I told him the one, the
one funny story that I did tell my I said,
A right, next year, you got to be like a
twenty four. You can't come back to the thirty three
or else we're gonna be.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Run up here.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
How many did you win by?
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (18:25):
So it was a It was the playoff and he
had never played a tournament ever, and now all of
a sudden he's in the playoff. You know, in its
alternate shot. So he has a you know, a putt
to win it, and it's like about you know, he
probably has a three foot putt to win it, and
he nailed it. He drained it.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
So you still have to make the shots.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
You still got to make the shots. So I think
he just he went into it blind. He didn't know
what he was actually getting into.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
It was.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
Quite an experience, crazy.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Yeah, experience.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
That's amazing.
Speaker 5 (18:53):
Congratulations on everything heading into the forty ninth year.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
That's incredible.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
We'll share everything on our social But you're a listener
of the pod. We know that from the Trevor Benzel
comment you already made, so you know this question is coming.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
What is your favorite Philadelphia course?
Speaker 2 (19:09):
I would say so obviously I'll take penn Oaks out
of it. I would actually say Roland Green from a
from a competitive standpoint, I mean, I could go find
Ali you're marry.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
And all that, But I think logo too.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
I love I love the competition aspect, and I feel like,
you know, I've had a chance to play in a
mid am there and it's like, oh my gosh, this
is probably like as close to Augusta as Green's could be.
So I like the competition aspect of Roland Green.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
I played come up quite a bit on this show
over the years, There's no doubt about it. I actually
played in uh in one of your events a couple
of I forget how many years ago, it was maybe
about not eight or nine years ago.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Yeah, about that.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Because I was working with Jason Martiitis at the time
on the radio and me, Jason and Mikey Miss played
in a group and I remember having a ball that day.
The golf course was great, but Mikey Miss was in
a dark place with his game and actually needed an
emergency lesson before we left the property.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Remember that one, Oh man, So there's like three really
dark Like I was thinking about this the other day.
It's the guy who has the shipping yips, like trying
to warm up for his like I've had that, right.
You never see the guy with the putty yips because
they don't even practice right, right, you have the chipping
yips with the guy who's like blaming him over the
sand trafs. I think it's the guys that are that
have been carried the entire membory guest and now they're
(20:29):
going into the alternate shot playoff, right, and they have
to find their game because they're gonna hit a t
shot in front of eighty people, right. And then there's
the guy who probably has an hour drive home from
the course but needs to hit more balls than the
grind And mikey miss was in that dark place, but
I remember the pro just sitting there, you know, trying
to help him. It was it was pretty funny, but
I also felt felt sad for him.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Yeah we've been there.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
Yeah, awesome. Well, thank you for joining us, good luck
this year. Let us know there's anything else we could
do to help, and uh looking forward to seeing who
takes home the championship this year.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
No, appreciate it, Thanks guys for helping us, and really,
you know, thank you for what you do to Philadelphia Golf.
I mean it's awesome to get such great exposure is
such an awesome game. And I think you know, I
bragged my friends. I think the Philly aarya in terms
of golf, is just such an awesome community. Whether it's
GAT matches or a local tournament's the Philly section. So
you guys contribute to it all.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
So thank you so much, absolutely, thank you. All right,
let's take a quick break. We will be right back,
all right, welcome back to swing it and ding it.
Thanks to Jim O'Connor for joining us. That's a that's
an awesome event. I've heard about it over the years.
I haven't haven't played in it, but it's like, I mean,
it's a commitment too, right, It's like Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
(21:47):
Mondays it is. It's that's awesome. I mean, that's a
lot to pull off, but it's it looks like a
really cool event. So good luck to those guys this
year and heading into their fiftieth next year and benefitings
to make it wish dollar yes year that would they'll
get there. They will get there. They will get there.
So the Rocket Mortgage, Aldrich Pot, Gator pie eider pot,
(22:11):
Gator potsticker, put geter, put Geter Wow, twenty years old
wins in a five hole playoff for with a seventeen
foot ten inch put. Youngest player on tour gets win
number one. At some point, Harry, he was up to
one ninety seven ball speed over the weekend, averaging three
(22:31):
twenty six, number one on tour in distance. Yeah, I
mean we saw him earlier in the year, right he was.
He popped up and looked like he was coming on
strong and then as you know, it's it's kind of
the ups and downs, but wild finish five hole playoff Grazerman.
Chris Kirk missed a four footer on the second playoff hole,
so he jumped out. But pretty wild finish in an
(22:53):
event like that.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Yeah, there's a couple of those holes where Grazerman was
out driving old pot geeter. So he must have a
down shift. He must have a different gear that he
downshifts into to make sure he hits the fairway because
when he wants to let it loose, like you did
on number fourteen, the par five, I mean, it's he
moves it man. He triumphed now in his third Sunday
Final pairing of the season. It's kind of an interesting
(23:16):
year that he's had. He's had three top tens now,
including the win, but nine missed cuts in fourteen starts.
So it's like boom or bust. If he makes the cut,
chances are he's going to be in the top ten
and competing in the mix on the final day. He's
only made five cuts. But now he's got his win
and his exemptions, and you know, this is Grazerman's fourth
(23:39):
runner up finished in the last two seasons now. He
finished runner up last year in the three M and
the Windom and the Zozo and the Fall and now
the Rocket. So he's one of those guys that's really
getting close to knocking one of these down. And it
was kind of a pillow fight, you know that you know, playoff,
but hey, you know, I was glued to it because
I had I took Paul Geeter on Saturday night at
(24:03):
some plus money. It wasn't exorbit it was like, I
think it was less than plus three hundred, but I
needed a win, man, I had, you know, ox Shay
let me down. He played like crap on Saturday and
then had a great round Sunday and got into the
top twenty six. I guess for the one and done
but I needed to get a win and uh, you
know the South Africa. I like watching him play. Man,
(24:23):
this guy, I mean he's he's so stocky.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Got the big body like that. I like the big
body player.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. He looks like a guy that would
have really fit in back in the late seventies early
eighties on tour, you know, hitting those per Simon woods
with that.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
Body twenty years old too, yeah, right, like it's rugby player. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
And how about his dad, you know there on you know,
every hole, living and dying with every shot. I mean,
like he did a putt, they turned him and he go.
It was eating him up. Man, it was. It was
pretty good.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
It was cool. It was cool. Danielle. Have you seen
Jake knapwalking around because he was hot? He fired a
sixty one, of course record and he's up to the
bet Park's leader board this week, wondering how he's gonna do.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
Yeah, I haven't seen him yet, but I haven't been,
you know, paying too much attention to who's walking around.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
But that's not a bad way to qualify and get
in there.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Yeah, no doubt about it. Yeah, I mean, you know,
a fun of a fun close to to an event
that obviously didn't have the top top guys. Well that's
some some top guys.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Yeah, but a couple of those guys were in there. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
But uh yeah and Chris Kirk. You know, you get
into that playoff and it's it's seasoned vet who has
wins under his belt, and then two guys going for
their first. You know, you think, all right, Kirk's gonna
just you know, have the have the stamina here and
the poise and winds. It's all. It's all about the putting, right,
It always comes down to those clutch putts and uh
(25:52):
and he was not able to do it on the
on the second playoff, all Gracerman was was shook. I
mean I think he just was like, man, here was
here's my chance to really get this first win, and
he was he was just really in a bad place
after that round.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
How many how many second place finishes does he have?
Not only two or three?
Speaker 4 (26:08):
Right?
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Yeah? I think this fourth one in the last season
and a half. Wow.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
He's a Jersey guy too, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
No Jersey, Short Hills, New Jersey and then he went
to Duke University. But you talk about punk eater like
that guy, he's not even he's not polished at all yet,
like he's got so much so many aspects of his
game can be sharp. And imagine if that guy really
tones in the short game, what he's going to be
able to do because he's not unless something happens to
(26:39):
his back. There's nothing that's going to happen to that distance.
That guy just is a powerhouse off the tea.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Yeah, his coach is saying that he you know, he
was reaching one ninety seven ball speed. His coach is like,
I like to I like him in the one eighties,
like the one eighty fives, like.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
Dial it back a little.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
You got to pull it back, which is hard for
those guys.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
I know that.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
I mean, if that's their game, you know he can't
change that. But yeah, he's an exciting player, exciting player
to watch.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Yeah, being the President's Cup probably no doubt, you know
so one of the other South Africans. I always like,
these South Africans are fun to watch. Man. They have
over the course of the years, so many good players
come out of there.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Yeah yeah, all right, good event, Rocket Mortgage Danielle, let's
fill some teahad you got more on that.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
You notice how they've dropped the mortgage. It's just called
the Rocket Classic. Now I noticed that this year.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Oh really, yeah, because they're more than just like.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
Well they have Rocket money now that app and all
this other stuff. I guess you're right, Danielle. They've they've
evolved as a brand.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
They wanted to be their entire brand, Rocket Mortgages. I
guess just now under like one umbrellas.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Yeah, my apology said the Rocket Family. Yeah I should
know better.
Speaker 4 (27:50):
Well, I still call the Concors that the Honda.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
I just can't, you know, change that.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
It will also always be the Honda to me.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Yeah, all right, you guys want to get into some
tea all right, Well, Live Emotions, I know this was
hot topic in our group text. We saw Brooks get
a little frustrated, kind of take the driver to the
ground and then kind of teed off on a tea box.
Speaker 4 (28:16):
Did you guys get a chance to watch him?
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I think he was seven over
par at the time. Those things were not going well. Yeah,
he was sick, that poor tea marker. Oh my goodness.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Yeah, So we saw that, Like I said, we're talking
about that in the group text. And then also during
the first round of Live outside of the marquee groupings,
there's you know, teas or part of me groups and
teams paired together. And on the sixteenth there was a
fan just going at Patrick Read and Thomas Peters went
outside of the ropes to confront the fan. He's like
(28:51):
holding his iron in his hand, like pointing at him,
you know, and just kind of yelling at him to
make the fan calm down so Patrick could make his putt.
But what wasn't it a couple weeks ago that I
talked like, I talked about Patrick.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
Reid's bodyguard that's out there.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
Yeah, I don't know where he was, but all of
a sudden, I guess Thomas Peters maybe doubling as a
teammate and new bodyguard, but he was going after HIV.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
Ricky got into it with a fan too. Did you
see that one.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
I didn't see that guy.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
I guess it was early in the in the event,
he hits a putt and the guy yells, nice lag
putt because it like stopped like four feet and Ricky
Ricky went into went at him like he went at
the guy.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
Yeah. Wow, Yeah, I'll tell you A frustration level with
these players is at an all time high. I don't know,
maybe we're just seeing more of it because there's just
more people with cameras and it gets on social media whatever.
But I'm just noticing so much stuff where these guys
are just they're on the edge, man, and they're just
they losing it. The pressure is insane.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Bryson was in a divot. He took a big old hack, yeah,
and then he looked like he was gonna go off
and then he just kind of just hit hit the
turf again but didn't go too crazy. But yeah, these
guys are fiery.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
I sent you the Steven Jeger one too. We hooked
a drive on number four, the par five and slammed
his driver not once, not twice, but three times into
the ground and I don't think the shaft broke.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
Well, let's keep the topic of emotions going on. What
about Padrick Harrington Roger Maltby.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
Yeah, this was the main event of the weekend.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
Yes, this was, and so if you if our listeners
aren't aware, Padrack lost his t shot and wasn't sure
where it was, and Roger Maltby, obviously working for you know, TV,
was just standing there and Padrick got very upset and
said it's poor etiquette, it's golf etiquette to help somebody
(30:50):
in search of a ball, and that he should know better.
Malty should know better after all these years of playing,
and Maltby trying to take the stands like, look like
I have a boss.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
I'm not a player, yes, and I'm a.
Speaker 5 (31:02):
Journalist, so I need to be remain neutral, like I
can't be searching for this. So there were a ton
of as Harry was just saying, there's videos everywhere. Somebody
grabbed it on their phone, and you see the two
of them going back and forth, and you see Roger
kind of talking to Padrick's caddy and stuff like that.
But you know, I have to side with Roger on
this one.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Well, yeah, I don't know where to go on this
because I've seen other on course reporters help players.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
And he said he has, He says he has, and
he would have, right, yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
But and the other thing is Rogers as blind as
a bat, So I don't know if he was going
to be any help in finding the ball anyway.
Speaker 5 (31:39):
He also commented that ball was gone, there was you know,
a slim chance of finding it.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
I remember his producers in his ear saying, hey, we're
going to come to you to talk about this, right, like,
with all due respect Padrick, but these guys think the
world revolves around there and everyone should just like you know,
and and and Padrick obviously is a very well liked guy.
And but like, you know, come on, I think that's
again for stration, right, taking it out on a lost ball,
definitely taking out the wrong guy.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Yeah, yeah, I think it was a dog leg, right,
and he hit it through the dog leg into the
crap and it was I don't think there was any
way even with Roger with five Rogers on that ball,
with all due respect, so but that was pretty And
the other thing about Padrag okay here, I didn't like,
why do that.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
In public like you're in an autograph line.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
Yeah, go get Roger and take him aside, maybe into
the scoring era whatever, take him out of the public
view where everybody can be filming this thing. Have some respect.
The guy's a professional, used to play on tour, one
on tour, you know. I didn't like that aspect.
Speaker 5 (32:39):
Well, honestly, just check your feelings and be a grown man,
like we don't have to, you know, complain that somebody's
not helping us.
Speaker 4 (32:44):
Look for a ball that we hit, you know in
the junk.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
Yeah, So, well more emotions, Let's go there.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
Will Gordon made the cut on the number at the
Rocket Classic, securrying his PGA Tour card for the remains
of the season. So he finished with he shot six
under par, which was the projected cut line, and this
was the final start of his medical extension, so he
would have missed the cut that meant losing his PGA
Tour membership. He birdied the final two hopes to be
(33:16):
able to make the cut and move onto the weekend,
which helped him secure his card for the rest of
the season. So you could just see his emotions after
sinking that punt. He was just like, you know, and
he went on post around to just say like everyone
was rooting for him, all the text, all the calls,
everything he was receiving all week. So that was pretty
(33:36):
cool to see him, you know, come down to the
last two holes and make that that pot to save
his card.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Talk aboutainst it man, Yeah, you need some ice in
the veins for that.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
Richard Teeter not a name that I was really too
familiar with before, but I saw this on on social
He hold out for Eagle to qualify for the Open,
So that was pretty cool. You saw him probably, I
mean yeah, really great videos.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Is that the guy from Estonia?
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Yeah, okay, I did see that. Yeah, that is correct.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
Yeah, I'm watching him, just hold off. L was pretty cool.
Speaker 5 (34:10):
One of Harry's favorite guys, Harry Hall also qualified for
the Open.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
This past weekend as well, so he'll be head over there.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
So we had a bartender at our club. He's no
longer there, but his father was the ambassador to Estonia.
That's the only reason I know of the country, aside
from this dude shipping in.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
Yeah, I have two reasons.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
Goodia knowledge, Harry.
Speaker 5 (34:36):
All right, Well, that t is brought to you by
where SPF. Looking for some protection that actually works and
feels great. Where SPF by PGA pro Justin Thomas has

Speaker 3 (35:06):
What a professional ready, Daniel, I mean she sounds like
she's been in our business for longer than we have.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
For decades?
Speaker 3 (35:14):
What's going on around here?
Speaker 4 (35:15):
How about you sef on first? So then you know,
it just got me complete motive being character.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
You got to have it on you yea.
Speaker 4 (35:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
They had a cool collaboration with Garage Beer where they
made their whearsf canes look like the Garage beer canes.
Oh yeah, that's yeah, because I guess Justin and the
and the Kelseys have become friends.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
So okay, yeah, did you see the stuff at the
shore going on?
Speaker 4 (35:37):
Did you see? Oh yeah, running, sliding, trying to get
I mean.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
That's a wild weekend in Seaisle for sure.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
I need to attend that. Well, actually I might be
too old for that.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
Now I'm vicariously living through the Philadelphia right now and
seeing what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
Yeah, I need to see all for sixty year olds.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
Now, Yes you did, Yes, you did. I'm trying to
think of where that would baby. I don't know nothing.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
I don't know that that exists. Maybe it's called the village.
The villages.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
The villages be good for you. Yeah, so har what's
going on with the game right now? I know you know,
you don't mind the heat. You've been out there, but
we have had some rain. Have you got gotten some
play in? How's how's things going?
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Well, it's been crazy, but yeah, I did get a
couple of rounds in last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And actually,
you know, our first hole is a huge nemesis. The
first two holes of my club, the nineteen twelve club,
are my nemesis. And the first hole on Friday made par,
(36:47):
Saturday made birdie, and Sunday made par. And it's just
a super hard you remember the whole movie, like downhill,
heats down to the right, he's around to the right,
that you just have a crooked lie with your second
shot most likely, which is what really messes me up.
I hit a seven wood to about six feet and
(37:08):
made birdie on Saturday morning. And the guys I'm playing
with we're in a match, they're like, oh, it's all
downhill from here like the first and you know, they
were pretty much right, but that just that hole. Maybe
I'm starting to get over that one. The second hole
with the out of bounds all down the left, and
it's basically like the green is in somebody's backyard is
(37:30):
just still a nemesis for me, but met you know,
still got to work on that. But man, I've been
hitting some incredible short game shots over the last couple
of rounds, like pin high on our eleventh hole, which
the green is about the size of this table top
that that I'm working on here, and I hit a
flop shot. I had some really good grass, which is significant.
(37:53):
I hit a flop shot to a foot tapped in
for the par I've had a couple of short game
shots with fifty four degree wedges where I've just you know,
kind of brushing the grass, uh and putting them you know,
within ten feet. So things like that are really improving.
I just got to get a little bit better luck
staying in the fairway when I you know, with some
of these crooked fair wars where I hit the middle
(38:15):
and it rolls off into the you know, into the
darkness and then you're faced with a really tough lie
coming into the greens. But yeah, I'm working working like crazy.
Getting forward. Getting my weight forward is the difference of im.
We're working on that. If I can if we can
figure that out it consistent more consistently, I'll be able
to play golf.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
I'm with you, Harry, I got my first round under
the belt with the new irons.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
Oh yeah, I definitely.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
I played at Bala this week. Ballot is in great condition,
by the way, Oh nice. Yeah, A lot a lot
of fun it went. It went great. I'm very very
happy with him. I mean the ball is just responding
off the face of the club, uh, in a much
better way.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
And these are the Apexes right yep.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Yeah, our buddy, our buddy Corey Riley, one of the
best club fitters around. He's down a five iron guy.
If you're in the in the market for some Calaway
club so they have a deal with Callaway, he will
get you dialed in with the right ones, and he
did with me because I can't wait to play again.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
Very small greens at Balla, So you had to be
pretty sharp with those irons, right.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
Yeah, or good with the wedge if not. But my my,
my putting is is a really good place right now.
And if I can control the ball off the tee,
which I have, it's it's just the iron game for me,
and it's it's it's accuracy. Yeah, it's just it's just
getting that ball just to be somewhere online right now
(39:35):
and we're getting there. So I'm actually playing a Medford
village this week before Buddy Brian Dowell, the Great Agent. Yeah,
it's a fun, fun place. It'll be a good like
late Thursday leading into the holiday weekend round. Those are fun.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
How many times did you use the Driver at ball
on ten and eleven?
Speaker 3 (39:54):
I imagine, yeah, I mean I use it on on Yes,
I use it on ten eleven. Yeah, I probably used
it five, four or five times, okay, But I was
really trying to hit my irons because they were they
were newer, so I was hitting six iron just to
try to get it out there and hit it. But
you know me, Harry, if I I like the driver.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Oh yeah, it's like Potkeeter here. He likes to stretch
it out there. That's good man, that's great.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Danielle, how's the how's the how's the feelings in uh
In in Illinois? For the for the Matthews family, how's
everybody feeling?
Speaker 4 (40:27):
We're feeling good.
Speaker 5 (40:28):
Yesterday Brendon had its actually funny and let me take
it back to I think it was Monday.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
I had the car, I dropped him off.
Speaker 5 (40:37):
I had to do a couple of things, you know,
get some food for the airbnb whatever. So I go
back because I thought I thought he was like a
nine hole pro am. He ended up playing eighteen. So
I got there and I'm like, wow, this is the
longest pro am effort.
Speaker 4 (40:47):
And he calls me. He's like, we still have like
two holes left.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
It was still a long pro am but anyway, he goes, yeah,
I'm gonna finish up and then I'm going to practice.
I was like, no, worry, is the baby sleeping in
the car. I'm gonna get some work done. I'm sitting
there and even telling this, I'm righting the short game area.
I look up and I see a stricks On bag,
you know, the hat whatever. I'm sitting there, I'm watching.
I'm like, that looks like a little bit of different action.
And I'm like watching. I think I'm watching Brandon for
like thirty five minutes Turn Drownstars away.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
I was like, that's right.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
There's a lot of guys with stricks On hats on tour.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
They all look the same.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
You know, after thirteen years, I should know what he
looks like. I was like, that's not his action, Like,
that's not I don't know what they're doing.
Speaker 5 (41:24):
So yeah, obviously he works with Jason Vale and yeah,
they got in some great park yesterday. He said, the
course is in great condition. So I haven't gotten a
chance to really see the course. We you know, I
saw the practice facilities, but excited to get out tomorrow
and see what it looks like.
Speaker 4 (41:38):
I'll throw some stuff up on our socials.
Speaker 5 (41:40):
I did see all the equipment, all the John Dear
equipment's uh space all over the place.
Speaker 3 (41:46):
How's that area where you guys are? Is it a
nice little town.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
Live from Silvis, Illinois.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
Yeah, Well that's a course rate behind Harry.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Right, Yeah, that's the par three sixteenth behind me. And
you got the the river. What's that? What's that river?
Is it the Rock River or something? I forget?
Speaker 3 (42:08):
That's your homework assignment, daniel I got what that river?
Speaker 4 (42:11):
Course with Danielle Matthews.
Speaker 3 (42:13):
Let's let's go into the course of course TPC deer run.
Harry tell us about this this place?
Speaker 1 (42:19):
Yeah, Silvas, Illinois, very flat, like Danielle says, it used
to be the Quad Cities open way back in the day.
Speaker 4 (42:26):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (42:27):
Par seventy one seven and eighty nine yards not not
long for PGA tour standards designed by former PGA Tour
pro Da Wybering along with Chris Gray back in the
late nineties. Only three par fives number two, ten, and seventeen.
Four par threes three, seven, twelve, and sixteen, and there's
(42:47):
a driveable par four at number fourteen. When they move
the t's up that that'll get that'll get pretty spicy
in the closing round. I imagine they'll probably do that
at least on Sunday. Average green size five thousand and
five hundred square feet. It's bent grass all over the place,
except in the rough where it's Kentucky bluegrass and fescue.
There are seventy six sand bunkers, only three water hazards,
(43:11):
and they're in play on only three of the holes,
but number eighteen is one of them, and that pond
comes into play quite a bit on the approach. Twenty
one under to twenty eight under is usually what is
needed to win here, So you've got to go low.
You got to be you know, four five six under
pretty much every day to have a chance to win
this thing. So a lot of a lot of good
(43:32):
winners at this place. Bryson is won here. Back in
the day Jordan's Speith, we got what you Davis Thompson.
I believe it's defending defending, but it's really any kind
of any kind of player can win. It's a posting. Yeah,
and they all stayed in the same house, the trophy house.
I'm glad you brought that up.
Speaker 4 (43:51):
Yeah, I remember talking.
Speaker 1 (43:53):
Yeah, remember that we were talking about that last year.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
Yeah, probably already for next year.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
Golf route.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
I need to know is Ben Griffin in that house,
because that's who I'm taking this week. I hate taking
the favorite, but I just think he's gonna win it. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
Yeah, it's an interesting board. And let's let's talk about
see the line with our friends at bet Parks.

Speaker 1 (45:45):
Lot of people like him.
Speaker 3 (45:46):
Like him this week.
Speaker 1 (45:48):
He's the most sangular pick on the one and done.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
Denny McCarthy, No doubt I actually went with posting.
Speaker 1 (45:53):
Okay, I was torn between him left.
Speaker 3 (45:56):
Yeah, yeah, but I like how about our boy bazooon? Right?
We talked about, you know, some of these guys that
are firing tea for him T twelve at the US Open.
He has a T two here in twenty twenty two
as well, and he's at seven thousand. I know, give
me that actumber yep, yep, big number. We talked about
Jake nap two at thirty five hundred. I like him
(46:17):
a lot. But yeah, Denny is who a lot of
people are all over, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (46:22):
Now, did did Jason Bale give you any insight Danielle
into Lucas Glover's putting this week because Lucas has won
here before.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
Yeah, we overbottled wine. He gave me everything last night.
Speaker 1 (46:34):
Okay, we finished. He finished ninth at the Travelers just
a couple of weeks ago, which was better than what
it has been like for Lucas. If he can make
a couple of putts. I mean, he's a great golf
course form from tee to green Top twenty only pays
about plus one sixty, But I was interested in that.
Chris Kirk another guy who plays well here Top twenty
(46:56):
I think is easy money and I'm taking him over
Jake Napp in a matchup. Jake Napp getting a lot
of love this week, Yeah, because of the way he played.
Speaker 3 (47:04):
Like sixty one.
Speaker 1 (47:05):
Yeah, yeah, it happens. I like Luke Clanton for some
reason too. To make a move. He finished second year
last year when he was still an amateur at Florida State.
Plus thirty five hundred to win seems a little bit low,
but plus three sixty in the top ten looks good.
And Ben Griffin, you know, fifth here last year in
twenty twenty four. His last six starts now on tour,
(47:27):
his lowest finish has been fourteenth. So he's got four
top tens in his last six times. He's teed it
up and obviously a pretty prohibitive favor You look at
the difference between where he is and where the second
favorite is, it's a pretty decent drop off. So you know,
Ben looking for his third win of the year. Man,
Oh what a year.
Speaker 5 (47:47):
He shows you how diabolical golf is a guy that
was ready to hang.
Speaker 1 (47:52):
It up and was stelling for selling mortgages.
Speaker 4 (47:54):
Selling insurance or mortgages.
Speaker 1 (47:56):
Ye, mortgages.
Speaker 4 (47:56):
Yeah, years ago it's wild unow.
Speaker 3 (48:00):
I wonder if he worked with Rocket.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Yeah, but yeah, before we say goodbye that Live Golf,
you brought it up some things about it, Danielle. Patrick
Reid won last week in Dallas in a four man
playoff over Ozuna who stays and in casey. It's his
fourth top ten finish but interesting, it's his first win
on the Live Tour since he's been over there. But
(48:24):
he's an interesting name to watch at royal Port.
Speaker 3 (48:27):
Patrick Red and Beth Page.
Speaker 1 (48:29):
Well that's what That's what I'm saying. If he wins
at royal Port Rush, he's on the Ryder Cup team
and epic stuff.
Speaker 3 (48:37):
Oh my god, that'd be amazing.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
You'd have two captain Americas on the team. Keathan Bradley
and Patrick Reid. Remember him at Hazel team going at
it with Rory and shushing the crowd and that.
Speaker 3 (48:48):
Was all Those Europeans don't want to play against Patrick,
no way him.
Speaker 1 (48:53):
They don't want any of that reads smoke man. And
then Padrick we talked about he won the US Senior Open.
It brought more. He ended up holding on to win
even that after that lost ball eleven under par with
a final round sixty seven to beat Stuart Sink by
a shot. It's his tenth win on the PGA Tour
champions and his second Senior Open win. He's already in
(49:15):
the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 5 (49:16):
Yeah, well I did you brought up Live and you know,
I don't love talking about it because I feel like
there's never any more developments.
Speaker 4 (49:24):
But Rick Shields did talk to the relatively.
Speaker 5 (49:28):
New CEO, Scott O'Neill on what a merger PGA Tour
and Live merger would look like.
Speaker 4 (49:34):
So you can catch that on Rick Shields.
Speaker 5 (49:37):
I watched a couple of things, but essentially he's like, yeah,
it could work, it would work.
Speaker 4 (49:40):
Is it going to happen?
Speaker 5 (49:41):
So really no new news at all, but we do
I do have to give one additional shout out for
you know, I have two favorite listeners. We have Teddy
and then Patrick Kan's mom Karen and Patrick qualified to
have a job all next year on the PGA Tour
of America, So I just want to stay shout out
there and congratulate him as well.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
Love.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
That's the combination of the Latin Latino America and the
Canadian tour, right what you used to do?
Speaker 4 (50:09):
Yeah, they e merged I think it was like two
years ago.
Speaker 5 (50:12):
Well now it's PGA of America, so it's simply Yeah,
the Latin and the Canadian merged together.
Speaker 1 (50:16):
It's another another player to watch next year. That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (50:19):
Oh yeah, yep.
Speaker 5 (50:20):
We like having a repeat guests that we can root for,
especially Patrick, easy kid.
Speaker 4 (50:25):
