Speaker 1 (00:00):
News with you for the next four hours, getting you
set to wrap up the week. Friday is upon a
Happy Friday, everybody. My name is Nick Coffee. I hope
you knew that. If not, now you do. Scott Fitzgerald
alongside John Shannon with us as well, the trio that
has been holding it down this week. John Alden will
be back on Monday. Looking forward to his return. But fellas,

(00:20):
it's Friday, and I'm certainly happy about that. A lot
to get into and today's one of those days where
I'm gonna have to really hold back. I want to
talk sports today, Okay, can I just admit that. I mean,
I'm not gonna turn this into a sportshow. Obviously, we've
got things to do, and we've got priorities that we
are well aware of. But for some reason, I really
enjoyed seeing the Giants win last night.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Like that was that was cool to see. I'm not
anti Eagles by any means.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Actually, like Jalen Hurts, I think he's got actually one
of the more underrated stories in the NFL as far
as a guy that really did have the five star billing,
but yet actually did have a lot of doubters, right
whenever to a tug of Aaloo was coming in to
steal a shine. There was at the time this notion
that we, yeah, you know, quarterbacks at Alabama they're just
they're just successful because Saban builds elite rosters everywhere else.

(01:06):
And now this guy's went in super Bowls. But nonetheless,
the rookie duo Camp Skatavoo and Jackson Dart it reminded
me a little bit of dare I say whenever Zeke
Elliott and Dak Prescott as rookies kind of came in
and and really you could argue their best season as
a duel might have been their first season. Right. I'm sorry,
I'm turning I am turning this into a sports show

(01:27):
on our My mistake, My mistake. But anyways, last night
was uh, it was fun. I stayed up too late
watching it, but it was fun.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Well, it was fun.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Because you're starting to see the turning of the tide.
And I think what you're drawing on, Nick is something
that's a common theme in sports. I mean, we love
the heavyweights. We love, like we talked about with March Madness,
everybody wants to see the blue bloods, you know, they
want to see the upstence earlier, but they want to
see the blue bloods in the end, and just like
that in pro sports, we like to see a turnover

(01:58):
the guard, if you will. And the Chiefs certainly have
kings in their armor now as they get ready to
take on the Lion Sunday night. So you know, to
see teams like the Eagles and the Chiefs who have
been so dominant for so long. Again, I'm like you,
I like Jalen Hurts, nothing personal against the Eagles, but
it is nice to see other teams get in the
mix now. It was refreshing to see the Giants playing ball.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Last and I think last night's game, what I mean,
let's be real, the Giants were dare I say, in
control for a good chunk of it. I mean, yeah,
they held the Eagles scoreless in the second half. But
yet I think a lot of people kept watching, maybe
not in disbelief, but just thinking, Okay, well, the Eagles
are going to bounce back and this is.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Going to be a competitive finish.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
But it was not, because again, thirty seven, I'm sorry,
thirty four to seventeen was was your final score?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Bad night for Philly sports overall? Right, Yeah, it was, yeah,
and it couldn't happen to a better fan base. Scott Sure.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
I mean, well, you know when you were talking about
I want to talk about the Dodgers and the Phillies
coming up here in just a bit. But also props
to former Kentucky wildert Wendell Robinson, who oh h the
Giants and receiving last.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Night the very talented guy.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
And my wife was happy because she has the guy
with perhaps the best name in the National Football League
this year on her fantasy team. Cam Skataboo.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Oh, that guy's got some stories.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
The quotes from Giants players just about yeah, experiencing the
Cam Skataboo experience as far as just being around him
day to day. Guy's a character he's got and I
mean that in a good way. He's just he's different,
and you know, I can see why maybe you would
want you never know, any running back is going to
do in the NFL, just because it's such a unique position. However,

(03:35):
there's also some things that you saw at Arizona State,
in Sack State before he got to Arizona State that
made me think, Okay, maybe this guy would be worth
drafting pretty early on. But the Giants. They were the
one that took him and last night it certainly paid off.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Sor right.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
We'll get to more sports coming up here about fifteen
minutes with Scott. But yeah, I had to get out
of my system after last night.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
But I have weekends. I have weekends like that where
it just seems like there's weekends where there's I I
just can't get the sports vibe going. I'm trying, they're
just as good games whatever. And then there's days like
you just mentioned where you're almost watching every sports like
a movie and you you ever sit down and watch
a game and just get into that game. Two teams
had no intention of ever watching.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, it's it's it's what I just every day.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Because I gamble on it, I become I become very
much invested. Like last night Tulane, I had to sweat
it out, but man, I was the biggest Tulane Greenway
fan as they got a very late, unexpected touchdown to cover.
You would have thought as it happened that I that
I was in.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Alum or Tulane. That's just that's what gambling does.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
You've got You've got a lot of storylines, Bud, you
got Joe Flakoh, you get something something maybe up with
Kyler Murray. You got the baseball and Kyle too is
on the way to a dude. We got BBN's gonna
have a big party this weekend, and we heard from
Pat Kelsey, who makes me want to run through walls.
So we got and we had Darien Deveres talking a
big ten media days yesterday.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
That's time of the year for sports as far as whenever.
You got so much going on, and I'm certainly excited,
but we've got a lot to get into. Brett Hankinson
finally is in federal prison for his role in the
Breonna Taylor raid, and that's a long time coming, and
I just I'm curious what the process is when this
happens where he he reported, But we'll get into that also,

(05:15):
maybe something that won't shock you, but it's certainly going
to be a big piece of news throughout the day
and probably the weekend. But the Kentucky man who killed
a six year old boy in twenty fifteen that was
released on parole, that of course led to a lot
of uproar already rearrested. So I guess that's good that
he's that he's in custody again, but also maybe a
reminder that yeah, you probably shouldn't let the guy out.

(05:36):
But anyhow, we got a lot to get to, so
let's do that. We'll take a quick break and get
a traffic and weather update for you right here on
news Radio eight forty whas. It's five seventeen here at
news Radio eight forty whas Coffee and Company with you,
fueled by Thornton's make sure you stop in to see
him this morning. You should. That's a good way to
start your Friday. They can help you with a variety
of things. Fuel obviously, they can help you there, and

(05:57):
you can save money at the pump every time, and
including a potential twenty five cents off per gallon savings
that you could get once per week. So again that's
one of the many incentives to be a member of
their Refreshing Awards program. Also, you can get a donut
and a cup of coffee for three bucks, or one
of the delicious breakfast sandwiches they have. I always go
with the sausage, egg and cheese croissant. But again, you've
got a lot to pick from, all right, So this

(06:18):
story became a really big story nationally just because it
was a real head scratcher to a lot of folks
as far as just how could this be? How could
somebody break into a home viciously murder via stabbing a
six year old kid and then one only get a
twenty year sentence but then serve less than half of

(06:40):
that and be out. And what really got me is
that the way it was set up, and it does
sound as if it's really just a legal loophole, but
the way it's set up with the parole is that
he would have been off of like he wouldn't even
have been monitored what do you call it whenever you're
under supervision. I mean, he would have been free and
clear essentially if by the end of I think June

(07:03):
of next year, which is just insane to think about.
But maybe that won't happen now because within what a
week of being released, this this gentleman, he's far from that.
But this, this scumbag, if you will, Ronald xantis Is
has been has been rearrested, so I mean, you can't
make it up. He was relocated to Florida after his release,

(07:25):
where authorities discovered he failed to register as a convicted
felon within forty eight hours is required by state law.
The Marion County Sheriff's office obtained a warrant and arrested
him earlier this week, and it sounds like he is coming.
He's coming back to Kentucky Florida. Florida Attorney General James
Uthmeier said his office acted swiftly after learning Exantus was
in the state, calling him quote a dangerous individual who

(07:48):
murdered a child by repeatedly.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Stabbing him in the head end quote.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
He said officials are now working to return Exantus to
Kentucky and of course back at Kentucky. Andy Basheer has
talked about this, but what he discussed recently was the
threat that's made towards parole board members over Exantisi's release,
which I mean, I can't say that I'm stunned that
that people were so outraged by this story. I'm certainly
not justifying it, but I'm not stunned that they were

(08:14):
outraged enough to to to do something like that now.
And one thing that that that, Honestly, I give the
tip of the cap to John Shannon. He came in
and discussed this story with us earlier this week when
it became even more of a national story, and that
was that no, no, no, no board, no board actually
approved his release, and in fact, they unanimously voted to

(08:36):
keep him behind bars. And I'm glad John came in
and highlighted that for us, just because that is that's
an important distinction here, because it was really just that
they were required to grant him re entry in some
form of fashion for reasons I would never know, but
maybe this ends up being one of those let's revisit
how how this process is set up, because it could
leave us in a situation like this that the system

(08:58):
has us putting this guy back in the streets. And
clearly nobody that has any legit, you know, nobody with
any you know, decision making power that's on a pro
board is going to think that this makes any sense
at all. So sounds like he's headed back to Kentucky,
and as far as what happens with him, as far
as punishment moving forward, even if they wanted to really
hold him to the highest extent possible for this violation

(09:20):
of being released and then not registering as a convicted felon,
I wouldn't be shocked if they don't have a lot
of latitude here as far as really you know, because
again there's a lot of guys who we know did
some awful things, but they can only get you on
what they can only get you on, right like tax
evasion for you know, people in the mafia who we
know are responsible for ultimately a bunch of deaths, things
like that. But this story again not going anywhere, and

(09:44):
we're not going anywhere.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Either, So stick around.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
We've got another sports update coming your way with Scott Fitzgerald.
Also we'll get a check of traffic and weather not
going to be quite as cool today, but still beautiful.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
And then right now looks like.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
We're off to a good start with the roadways, but
Bobby Ellis will tell us otherwise if that's not the case.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Stick with us. Again.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
It is Coffee and Company and we are Field both
Thorntons right here on news Radio eight forty whas fob
here at news Radio eight forty whas. Happy Friday to you,
Coffee and Company with you. Thanks for hanging out with us.
Don't forget you can take us with you wherever you go.
Listen live on the iHeartRadio app. Also within the iHeart
Radio app, you can react to the show you can

(10:21):
share whatever it is you want. Questions, compliants, compliments, insults,
feel free to send them our way. And it's the
talkback Line. Courtesy of Alex R. White PLLC SO Distraction
Driver dot Com. All right, so Brett Hankinson has finally
found himself in actual federal prison for his role in
the Breonna Taylor raid. That, of course will go down

(10:43):
as one of the most covered stories probably in the
history of Louisville, to be honest with you, and he
fought it not only in court as far as his
trial and then he fought delaying sentencing and whatnot. But
finally he is in a federal prison in New Jersey.
So he ordered to turn himself in. He's going to
start serving this thirty three month prison sentence. And this

(11:05):
is not relevant at all. It's just my curiosity. When
you report to prison and you end up in a
federal prison in New Jersey, do you do you like,
show up in New Jersey yourself, like, hey, I'm here,
let's get this started so I can get it over with,
or like, do you turn yourself in federally locally and
then they and then they get you there? I mean

(11:25):
I would assume you don't just make arrangements. But I really,
I really don't know, Scott. You've been to federal prison
many times. What course, right, what's the process.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Look like here?

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Question?

Speaker 4 (11:34):
But I mean that, no, I get it. I would
assume that you know, you just you would, to your
point jokingly affectionately, roll up and go I'm here, let's
do this, and and let's go. So I imagine that's
how it all kind of went down. And we'll see
how long was the sentence Again, I didn't.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Thirty three months is what he's set to serve. And
look this, this entire case is far from complicated. I
have no problem in saying that I think you could.
You could, and this is just I guess it's not
uncomfortable for me, but it just doesn't seem as as

(12:13):
acknowledged as much as as it should, and certainly as
much as it used to be. But not every situation
is such a black white right wrong. I mean, I
can see those who certainly think this guy belongs in
federal prison, maybe even longer than his sentence. I also
understand that when you just consider the facts of what
happened that night, he's a law enforcement officer, and he

(12:34):
hears shots and he's reacting, and yeah, he might have
been he might have been excessive, which he was actually
excessive in firing back, and there's really no disputing that.
But when you are in that position, you really don't
know what you would do. And I think what made this,
I mean again, this is it's it's layered, to say
the least as far as just the overall story itself.

(12:55):
But one of the many reasons why this became such
a big story, and Hankerson is the is the most
notably known person involved here is from from the law
enforcement side, is because it was pretty easy to determine
that he had been accused of being a bad cop
before any of this happened, and he had a history,
and he had been reprimanded for either misuse of a

(13:16):
firearm or not. I'm not sure the exact wording, but
I mean, and again there's there's others that had run
INDs with him long before this happened, that that it
was well documented that he was he was kind of
a scumback. You know, I don't know him personally, but
I think there's enough out there. I mean, I think
you could take away that night specifically it determined that
he might not have been. In fact, doesn't seem like

(13:38):
he was at all a good law enforcement officer, And
unfortunately those exist. It's I think I choose to believe.
In fact, I think it's pretty well documented. That's that's
that's that's still a thing and will always be a thing. Right,
You'll always have bad apples. Unfortunately law enforcement, you can't
have any bad apples. It's just gonna happen. I mean,
I say, you can't like it. It's preventable, but will

(14:00):
never be a scenario where there's a law enforcement officer
that is not doing what he's supposed to do.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
That's just that's just life.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
But it's such a small, teeny tiny number when it
comes to those that other than you know, compared to
those that are doing the right things and are not
out here to do anything other than protect and serve.
But it's it's it's a it's a mess of a situation.
And I guess if you're looking for closure as far
as this just being you know, clearly, I'm sure Breonna
Taylor's family they they've they've wanted closure for quite some

(14:28):
time and wanted justice for Hankinson. And I'm sure, there
are others that think that that's that's not you know,
and trust me, I know there's many that don't feel
like he should be in prison. And I understand your
opinion on that. But this story, for a long time,
the Brionna Taylor case, it was what people thought of
when they thought of Louisville. Ye, And I don't think

(14:50):
we're there right now, but it's still sort of in
the peripheral, peripheral, if you will. And and I think
once you know, once you know, now now that he
in prison, maybe that starts to fade even more and
it's no longer something that really even comes up at
all when it when it comes to this city. I mean,
this was a this is a tough look for Louisville,
and it's you know, it's been nearly.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
Six years, Yeah, and it still lingers large. And you
you're never going to hear the word again, Nick Hankinson
without thinking of Breonna Taylor.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Sure, I mean, honestly, you'll never hear BROWNA. Taylor without
thinking about him.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
That's right. And I think to your point, this is
going to be with Louisville for a long time. It's
and rightfully so when it should and it's we're aft
hacking our hats on it. At least I'd be interested
to hear from the Taylor family. Does he reporting to prison?
Where does that put you?

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Now?

Speaker 4 (15:39):
I know it's not gonna bring full closure. Nothing will
ever bring full closure.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
It's at least a step in the process of of
this no longer being an active story, right, That's right, Like,
for example, once once Brooks Houck is finished with his
appeals process and loses, that'll be another step towards closure
for that story itself, but also the family of Crystal Rogers,

(16:03):
because you know, these are the types of stories that
in news and what we do, any little bitty update
is going to be a big story that gets a
lot of talk, because that's just the nature of news.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Right.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
So uh again, I think this is this is a
far from you know, far from easy situation to assess overall.
And I'm sure as I say that, others are thinking,
what do you mean it's far from easy.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
It's easy.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
This guy's a scumbag. Put him in prison the rest
of his life. And then there's others that you know,
we'll we'll tell you what do you mean? It's not easy?
This this woman was living a life of crime and
and and that's why, you know, that's why things.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Played out the way that they did for her.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
I know that there are opinions on both sides, and
I understand both of them, to be honest with you,
I really do. So again, it's it's it's there's you know,
I'm not looking for a fight with it, but obviously
the people who have their strong opinions there, that's just
kind of how we I guess that's kind of how
we communicate anymore. That's exactly and hot and you know

(17:01):
it's a hot button topic anyway.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
Yeah, So go to social media and read about it
any given story and you'll see, you know, both sides
of the issue. And that's one of the things I
like to do because I like to get the pulse
on what people think. And you read out the noisemakers,
the people they.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
Look I forget the name of the officer who was
involved that night that actually joined Clay and buck right here.
On has shortly after this trial started for hageson and
or maybe it was sentencing, and he laid out sort
of what happened that night, really good context to the story.
But he also in that situation. Acknowledged in that interview
that the detectives didn't do their work the right way,

(17:37):
which led to the issue with the Warren. But as
far as what took place that night actions, I mean again,
you got somebody who is law enforcement, and yeah, he
might have been excessive, but he did get there was
shots fired, and nobody knows how they would react in
that situation until it happens, including law enforcement. There's a
vast majority of those that serve an entire career as officers,

(17:57):
they never draw their gun, and I just don't think
people think about that very often.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
All Right, Roy.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
O'Neil said, to join us on the other side, stick
with us right here on News Radiate forty WHSIVE forty seven.
Here News Radio eight forty whas it is coffee and
company with you, and we are fueled by Thornton's Let's
bring him in. He's Ory O'Neal of NBC News. Rory,
I guess we'll start with a happy Friday to you,
my friend. Let's let's discuss this Nobel Peace Prize that

(18:22):
has been announced. So what can you tell us about
the latest here? Obviously it's one of the more prestigious
awards and recognitions one can.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Get here it is, and this really wraps up a
week of events from the Nobel Committee earlier announcing Nobel Prizes,
essentially one a day. There's chemistry, there's literature, and then
of course this morning we got word that the twenty
twenty five Nobel Peace Prize goes to Maria Coriina Machado,
Venezuelan activists who's trying to expand democracy there push back

(18:52):
against the dictator in Venezuela. So she was the winner.
Of course, this comes as President Trump had lobbied awfully
hard the Nobel Peace Prize and at a time when
they are seeing peace break out in the Middle East
of all places.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Yeah, I when it comes to just when you hear
of an award and somebody being honored in some former
fashion Nobel Peace Prize, I'm not sure there's one that
just when you hear it sounds more prestigious and honorable
than that one.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Well, which is probably why the President has been lobbying
so hard for it. Now, look, it's not like there's
an annual thing where oh sorry he did, It's not
like the Oscars. Well he didn't have a movie this year,
so he can't win. You know, you can win these
things over your lifetime. Let's see how this works out.
Maybe next year he can win the prize for all
the achievements, and maybe by then he'll have a Russia

(19:40):
Ukraine solution in the works as well. So you know,
we have seen Pride presidents win this. Jimmy Carter won
it after he left office as well. So yeah, I'm
sure there's disappointment on Pennsylvania Avenue this morning. I'm sure
he'll have some choice words about the Nobel Committee, but
you know, it's a process, all right.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Let's switch gears.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
So the halftime show of the Super Bowl that has
certainly been a big talking point in the last couple
of weeks because there's been some pushback as far as
bad Bunny being the performer, and there's now, i guess,
an alternative program being produced by the group founded by
Charlie Kirk.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
What can you tell us about the latest year.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
Clearly there's going to be some pushback, but that won't
result in any type of change, I'm assuming no.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
Instead, they're just going to have alternative programming so that
if you want to, So whin the Super Bowl halftimes
begins you know, flip the channel or log in and
instead go watch the programming being put together by Turning
Point USA. They are still trying to figure out exactly
what that programming will be. Our survey on the website
for it asks respondents to select from a number of

(20:44):
genres they'd like to hear, including country, hip hop, rock
and roll, or quote anything in English.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
Yes, that of course has been a big pushback. One
of the reasons there's been a lot of pushback, I
should say, as far as bad Bunny being someone who
does not does not perform songs in English. Now it
seems as if he's playing into this, but in a
way that is I don't know. I can't tell if
it's strategic as far as just wanting to continue to

(21:11):
keep this story because the controversy is going to keep
his name out there. I mean, clearly he's popular enough
to get to get asked to be the performer in
the Super Bowl. But I just feel like if you
were wanting to maybe win over more fans that didn't
necessarily have a lot of information about you, and you
wanted him to realize, hey, come check me out, I

(21:32):
think you'll be surprised. It'll be a lot of fun whatever.
He doesn't seem to be taking that approach no.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
And you know, even on Saturday Night Live, which he
hosted the premiere of the season last Saturday, he sort
of joked about, well, you all have four months to
learn Spanish. Yeah, so you know, it's sort of a
message of he's going to be who he is. You know,
he's the second most popular streaming artist, only behind Taylor Swift.
And if you and I are trying to have this discussion,

(22:00):
I know you're a lot younger than I am, which
makes me angry, but you and I are having this discussion,
We're not the demo. You know. The advertisers want the
people he's reaching. Sure, he doesn't need to bring you in.
Advertisers want what he's got.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
They know they're getting me regardless.

Speaker 3 (22:17):
Right, And they like all the boys he brings to
the yard. I guess as they would have said, well.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Said, I like good stuff. On a Friday from Rio
and Neil Rory, enjoy your weekend. We'll talk to my friend.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
Thanks Nick.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
That's Royan and Neil NBC News. How about that? Yeah,
bad bunny. I can't name a song.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
I don't know if I would recognize it if I
heard it in my ears, But uh, I would have
assumed that the approach would have been, Hey, I get it,
but I'm gonna I'm gonna put on the best halftime
performance you've ever seen, and you'll be you'll be wanting me.
