Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thank you very much, John Shannon. Let's get the six
o'clock hour started show. We Happy Friday everybody. It is
Coffee and Company, myself Nick Coffee. You just heard John Shannon,
Scott Fitzgerald alongside, and we are fueled by Thornton's to
make sure you keep him in mind if you need
anything to get your day started, rather that be a
cup of coffee, some breakfast, maybe some fuel for your vehicle.
And there's probably a location near you if you were
(00:23):
in Kentuckyana, because that's just how in demand Thornton's has
been for many years now. A lot of imitators trying
to do what Thornton's does. They can't. They can try,
but they can't. So Thornton's a local brand of course,
that been around a long time, and we're happy to
have them on as partners. All right, So been a
busy morning so far today. I did get the show
(00:43):
started by just displaying my inability to not want to
talk sports sometimes because we had a good Thursday night
game last night. As far as just a real surprise, right,
there's nothing worse than a game that looks like a
blowout and then that's what you get. But it did happen,
but it was great because it was the exact the
way around. I mean, I don't know if you would
qualify a thirty four to seventeen game as a blowout,
(01:06):
but in NFL it actually is kind of rare to
lose by that much. And we're talking about a Giants
team that nobody thought really had a chance against the Eagles,
who were the defending Super Bowl champs. I think going
in last night, I certainly would have said that they're
one of the better teams in the NFL. And maybe
you still say that now you probably do. But man,
what a night for the Giants and Cams Skataboo. But
find me a better name in the NFL than Cam Scataboo, Scott.
(01:28):
You can't. You can look, you won't find one.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
No, you have Skataboo and you have Jackson Dart. Yes,
did you see my man's bling he was wearing last night.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Now, now you got me thinking if we were creating
like a spin off of Friday Night Lights, the TV show,
and we needed a quarterback and we needed a running back,
those would be the names. Yeah, you could convince me
that those aren't real names, those are TV names because
Jackson Dart. I never I'm an idiot. I mean I
probably displayed that many times throughout the morning here every day,
but I never even really put it together that you
(01:56):
got Jackson Dart throwing darts well.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
And I think, to your point, what a lot of
people are looking at because it feels like we've had
nothing but the Chiefs and the Eagles since the French
and Indian War, and now you're starting to see a
change of guard with some of the surprise teams in
the NFL. And I think because we're talking about this,
because the NFL is such a big deal. I said
at the beginning of the year, I thought the Buccaneers
were my dark horse to go to the Super Bowl.
(02:19):
And if they do go, they got to wear the
cream Sickles, by the way, But it's actually a lull, right,
I love those uniforms. But you know, you're looking at
surprise teams like the Chargers. You know, they're a hallmark
Jim Harball team where it's like getting a slow cargoing.
It takes a little bit, but eventually Harball gets them going.
The Steelers are surprisingly at three and one, arguably playing
(02:39):
in the worst division in football. However, and your Indianapolis
Colts are just the darlings of the NFL this.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Year so far, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
So. I mean there's a lot of feel good stories
in the NFL, and I think we're all just kind
of rejoicing in the fact that we're kind of over
the Chiefs and the Eagles. You know, the Kelsey situation
is starting to die down. Taylor, Swift and Travis They're
still there. They'll always be there. It's not as prominent as.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
What it was. And I think there's there's a lot
of hype in the NFL this year.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
I just don't really know what what range is left
for the Chiefs as far as their dynasty. I mean,
if anything, the loss last year in the Super Bowl
could have been something that that woke them up and
they go on a run here and win three in
a row. I'm not predicting they do that by any means.
I actually do this year feel like they have taken
a step back, but still mean a good team and
(03:25):
and really what what what at times I think they're
still living off of is that they they one they
have they have good players, they have good coaches. I
just don't feel like they line up with other NFL
teams right now, and they're just too much for the
other team to be able to contain. But they have
built a culture and a lot of those guys are
still there to where they're not going to hurt themselves
a whole lot, and they're gonna make you pay for
(03:46):
every mistake that you make. That's still very valuable in
the NFL, and I feel like that's kind of where
they are. But yeah, I'm not really sure what. It
just kind of seems like it's run as courts run
its course as far as really folks being entertained and
intrigued by the Chiefs being the darling, and of course
the Eagles they're relatively I mean again, they finally broke
through in one one, but of course they were just
(04:06):
in the Super Bowl with that same matchup Chiefs Eagles
just a few years prior to that, so that's right.
And then I think we'll see two new teams in
the Super Bowl this year. I really do.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
I hope you're right, And don't forget about the other
Field Goods story, which I personally think is because I
like the coach that's Mike vrabel Is back at New
England and he has them kind of Quase winning again.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
And this is a different New England team.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
This isn't the Tom Brady teams than Bill Belichick teams
that everybody hated. I personally like Vrabel as a head coach.
I listened to his pressers and I want to run
through walls for that guy. I think it's great to
have him back there. So, you know, just the NFL
is a lot of fun right now. Oh yeah, the NFL,
I mean, despite the bad bunny news.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.
The NFL has no competition as far as just viewership
interest level when it comes to sports and anything live
in this country. And again everybody probably is aware of that,
but when you're really I mean, it's sometimes it's I mean,
I found myself last night, my wife and I who's
not a big time NFL fan, she likes sports. She's
(05:02):
somebody that you know, I'm sports is a big part
of our life as far as culture. Again, she's not
as into it as I am, but I am happy
to have a wife that that, you know, when it's
Sunday night or Monday night, she's not asking to watch
Gilmour Girls, She'll she just knows, Hey, we're gonna watch football.
But she and how were dinner and had like a
twenty minute conversation. Why just talking NFL. And and that's
(05:23):
not to brag on her as somebody who knows ball,
which she does, but it's more so just because like it.
You know, she's she's She's probably what most would call
a casual. But even the casuals are plugged in enough
because of fantasy football, because of wagering, and because the
NFL is just a great entertaining product.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
You and I are thinking Alke, because that was my
wife last night.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
She was rejoicing in the fact this is the first
year I've heard her talk about the NFL. Because my
daughter created a fantasy league for the family, and my
wife had Scataboo on her team, and this is the
first time I've heard her get excited.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
She wasn't too hapy.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
It's a fantasy team, right right, And.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
This is why the NFL created a whole I remember
when they came out with their line of gear specifically
targeting women, different jerseys, different Sure, it's just the way
they fit, and some people were a little kind of
put off by that, but I get it. Now in
the NFL. I don't know who their marketing gurgu is
who started all this, but they I mean legend right.
And so when you were talking with Rory about the
(06:19):
bad Bunny thing, keep that kind of in mind before
you start judging about a halftime show. It's one, it's
just a halftime show. Two, you got to understand this
is a huge, huge business right now and they are
just capitalizing and striking where the iron's hot.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
And I tell you what, the there have been some
legitimate things that have happened in the NFL where they
deserved criticism and it was a bad look and there
was talk of, oh, how are they going to survive?
They're going to get canceled. This is terrible, But no,
I mean the product is so good. People don't really
care about some of that stuff, at least to the
(06:51):
point about you know, as far as folks like they're
not not going to watch the NFL anymore, Yeah you are,
Yeah you are? You are?
Speaker 3 (06:57):
We know you are. The people who say that are
the ones that go back and watch.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Yeah. So, now that we both shared stories of our
wives enjoying the NFL, it reminded me of a TikTok
trend that I found to be hilarious, and it is
wives who will start videoing without their husband knowing while
a football games, and they just yell out stuff that
is so not in context, like we're watching One woman
was watching an Eagles game and Jalen hurts his scrambling
(07:23):
in the pocket and and she's yelling shoot it, shoot it.
And then you know, some of them just saying like
obscure things. And the best part is the look on
the husband's face whenever he doesn't want to be like,
what the heck are you talking about? Right, but then
finally he's like, the wrong sport, honey, let's watch the gage.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Just just be quiet.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
I'm glad you said that because the crash outs, I mean,
I'm watching those on TikTok because it reminds me of
how I used to be as a fan, and I've
been able to push back. I'm not knock anybody for
being a passionate fan. Trust me, I was there. I've
done that inside.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
I'm just like that passion is one way to describe it,
and that probably is the case for you. I was
a lunatic. I mean I used to and I used
to make it. It used to be a thing to
where I couldn't watch games with my mother because I
didn't want her to see me that way, Which that's
awful to say, and it's embarrassing as I say it
right now, but that's just I mean. I would scream,
(08:15):
I would lose my mind. It was. It was back
whenever I really, I guess did consider it a life
and death thing.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Which was as Lions fan back in the day, I
never was like that. No, I'm just kidding, and that
would be their only win of the year.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Yeah, your battle testa when it comes to that. Am
all right, Let's get to an update of traffic and weather.
There's a big event coming up this weekend in New Albany,
our friends just across the river here, they've got the
hometown harvest event, or i'm sorr harvest homecoming, I should say.
And I want to talk a little bit about that
because they've got some new security measures in place because
of course of a tragic situation that happened there not
(08:51):
long ago. So we'll get into that. And there's a
country that has decided to ban social media, all social
media from anybody under the age of sixteen. I'm curious
if that ever becomes a thing elsewhere. All right, stick
around right here on his radio eight forty whas clock
management has never been my strong suits. So we've got
a quick segment here and then we'll get you back
to your updates that you are depending upon that you
(09:12):
have come to expect, and that is updates on the
roadways and of course updates in the forecast. So apologies there,
but real quickly, I do want to discuss a big
event here locally, not just to those that are in
southern Indiana, our neighbors across the Ohio River, but I'm
sure many here in Louisville, in the Kentucky and area
overall do enjoy making their way to an annual event
(09:32):
that has been around for a long time. And of
course there's a lot of the Harvest homecoming for in
New Albany. It's one of the many events here in
the area Louisville or southern Indiana that just kind of
remind you of fall. You've got a lot of local
vendors and it's really just a big fall party. And
I'm trying to think of the last time I went to.
(09:53):
It's been some years. But by the way, real quick
shout out to southern Indiana. I kind of feel like,
not just with Hubers or this, but like some wineries
other farms, they've got a lot of attractions just across
the river that really if you want to go have
a day with the family and do the whole you know,
the home, the hay rod, I can think about it. Yeah,
the hay ride and the pop pumpkin picking. I'm all
(10:16):
over the place here. You would think that I'm You
would think that I'm I've never experienced any of this,
which which every year my wife drags me out to
do it, and I say that, you know, as if.
I mean, sometimes I would rather be watching football on
a Saturday or a Sunday. But it's you know, it's
a family, family tradition. Now we go pick pumpkins and
we you know, we do the hay ride stuff with
the kids and they love it. But yeah, we'll talk
a little more about it throughout the morning here because
(10:37):
obviously there was a tragic situation where there was a
shooting that took place and people lost their lives, and
with that, of course that the public is wondering if
there's going to be added security measures, and certainly there
will be, so we'll get into a little bit of
that later on. But let's get to another update of
the traffic and see what we're looking like here to
get this Friday started. I mean, I don't want to
speak too soon, but it looks like we are relatively quiet.
(11:00):
There is a crash that looks like on I two
sixty four the west ramp to River Park Drive, so
hasn't caused any real issues just yet. But other than that,
we were smooth sailings. So let's hope that continues throughout
the morning here. But again, if not, or actually, regardless
of what happens, we've got Bobby Ellis to keep us updated.
So you're in good hands.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
All right.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
It is Kentucky. It's morning, news, coffee and company with
you Field about Thornton's on News Radio eight forty whas.
Thank you very much, John Shannon. It is six thirty
four here at News Radio eight forty whas. Happy Friday, everybody.
Thank you for spending your Friday morning with us, and
we've got a busy morning the rest of the way.
You're gonna be talking here at around seven o'clock as
we always do with LBED spokesman Dwight Mitchell looking forward
(11:36):
to our weekly chat with him, and something that you
just heard there in the update from John Shannon. Certainly
a story that has clear Kentucky ties and was certainly
a big story locally, but he became a national story
pretty quickly just because of the outrage in regards to
the convicted. Well, again, he wasn't convicted of first degree murder.
(11:59):
Was he was more so convicted. I mean, he was
found not guilty of reason of being basically insane. And
I guess that's an important thing to consider when you
ask yourself, wait a second, how could this be? How
could somebody that we know that it's not being disputed
that the forty two year old man, Ronald Xantis he
broke into a home and stabbed a child to death.
(12:21):
But if you're wondering how it even ended up being
a sentence of twenty years, it's because again, he was
found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, but
was convicted of assault for stabbing the other family members,
when that, of course is what the conviction is, and
the murder charge not guilty again for reason of insanity.
I suppose that's what leads to the sentencing being what
(12:43):
it is, and him being able to be up for
parole and then being granted parole. But John, you tipped
me off to this ear. It's a really important fact
in this entire situation that the parole board, who again
started receiving threats, they didn't sign off on anything. In fact,
they unanimously voted this person should not be let out
on parole. This has got to be some technicality. But
(13:04):
another question, I guess that really is the big one
now is how could the parole board be trumped here?
How could they How could could their decision keep them
from from from from this. I mean, it's clearly legal
loophole by his attorney.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
So it's it's a loophole that the attorneys found in
state law that I'm, if I had to make an
educated guess, will probably be fixed in the next legislative session.
But they found a way. And I think it also
probably ties in with the fact that he was found
guilty of assault but mentally ill when he committed the crime,
So I'm guessing that has something to do with the
loophole as well, because of his mental state.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
I mean, here's the question I have if you are
if you are deemed to be not guilty of something
we know that you did because of mental insanity. Was
mental insanity not a factor in the stabbing?
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Well they're saying, they're saying it well.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
Of murder because you're crazy. But in the same act
you you you stab somebody like that doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
It does not the whole the whole thing, and him being.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Advocating this guy is should be free. I'm just stating
that that that that alone is just doesn't add up
to where as this plays out after sentencing that maybe
you know this. This is clearly they.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Haven't, and they haven't.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
There hasn't been an attorney or any kind of criminal
law person come forward and explain how that happened. I mean,
the parole board originally got the blame, and then they
came out and in almost in all caps, in a
statement said we did not recommend his parole. We wanted
to keep him in. And they had they had kind
of kicked the can down the road twice before on
(14:38):
making a decision on his parole to to to delay it,
and this was the third time it came up, and
they voted for him to stay in and do the
full twenty but this law, this loophole in this law
said no, he has to be released from mandatory re
entry entry supervision and and send him down to Florida.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Because because when they're viewing his situation as far as
what to be done, and I not even a parole
board viewing it, but I guess just how the legal
system is set up and how it views it. They
don't view him as a convicted murder. Now view him
as somebody who stabbed a child to death. And that's
because of how the convictions.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
He was convicted of assault and not murder. I mean,
he came into this home from Indianapolis, had no connection
to these people, broke in and just a crazy story,
began to assault him and started assaulting the daughters. The
father came down stair assault was going on, tried to
stop this guy, and by the father's description, the guy
slung him across the room and the guy that the
(15:32):
father is no small man, and then continued the assault
and ended up killing six year old Logan Tipton in
the assault.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
And those that were threatening the parole board, I'm not
surprised that we have people that did that. I also
I also think that that's a foolish thing to do.
And regardless, even if it was their call, that's certainly
not going to help, and it's certainly illegal as well.
But it's just a reminder that ninety nine percent of
people that are reacting or even maybe not reacting on
(16:01):
social media or doing something like threatening somebody, but just
that have a strong sense of outrage or or they're
just questioning how could this be? I'm willing to acknowledge
I'm one of the ninety nine percent that actually doesn't
know the exact process and every step along the way, right,
and you know, there are answers to how this happened.
It may not be when you agree with and I
(16:22):
certainly don't have the answer as far as how we
ended up here, But again, the root of it has
to be the fact that what he was actually convicted of,
and that's just how it is.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
It's assault to not. It was assault to not.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
But again, I really hate how I came off there
as if like I'm advocating, this guy should be free,
but if you if in one act of in one
crime essentially riataple charges within the crime here mental insanity,
they didn't hold you accountable for killing somebody because of
your mental state. But yeah, we think in the moment
when you were not murdering but you were assaulting, you
(16:54):
were you were competent Like that doesn't make any sense
at all.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Does not.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
And I will point out that there are people that
are found guilty of lesser charges on a daily basis
for crimes they commit.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
They might be charged with the top count.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
They get pleased to do that as well.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
So I think the reason why this garnered so much
attention was because it was a six year old boy
and the person that did the crime spent less than
half of the sentence hit has given it.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
It is unfortunate because those that are on the parole
board that receive threats, and even if they did receive threats,
it was certainly a rough week for just people outraged
by them. And yet they literally did nothing wrong. They
tried to do their day, They stepped in to try
to like, you know, whatever they could do as far
as just hey, we wanted to be known that all
of us collectively say no, this guy should not be out.
(17:43):
But they got all the blame for it, and yet
they actually had no They were at no fault at all.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
And I agree with the SoundBite I played in the
newscaps from the governor. This needs to stop this.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
We've got enough people running around shouting for political violence
as it is.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
This doesn't need to be added to that fire.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Well said, Thank you, John. Let's get to a hookupdate
of traffick in weather. We've got a lot more on
the way, including our conversation with Dwight Mitchell. Will do
that coming up around seven o'clock. Stick with us. It's Friday,
it's coffee and company and we're fueled by Thortons right
here on sports. Oh, I did almost did it. Months in.
I almost said here, I'm blaming Dwight Mitchell because I
can't not talk sports when he's in here. And four
months in, I'm going back to saying the old station
(18:19):
that I work for, it's all your fault, Dwight. I'm kidding,
it's on me. I'll be better. It's News Radio eight
forty WHS
