Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy Monday, ladies and gentlemen, Welcome in coffee and company.
Feel about Thornton's hero on News Radio eight forty whas.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
That's right, another Monday.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hopefully you had yourselves a good weekend, but now it
is time to get another week started.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Nick Coffee.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
That's me Scott Fitzgerald alongside John Shannon. He's here and
we now welcome back John Alden, the company man himself,
who first of all, are you are you? I hope
you had a good weekend. I did, and a good
week off, I should say, But I know your weekend
was good because of the Hoosiers.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I don't think.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
I'm not going to talk in depth about that, but
like I am, I'm on a level that I didn't
know was possible with excitement for Indiana football right now,
totally understandable.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
I will say I've learned to never really truly doubt
Kurt Signetti, but I just didn't think they were going
to beat Oregon at Oregon.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Scott, are you the same?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
It's not.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
It's not like I'm a hater and I'm thinking they're
not good enough. But I think it would be tough
for really anybody to go beat Oregon at Oregon, and
Indiana did it and really not in convincing fashion necessarily,
but there was nothing fluky about it.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
They were just better. And that was the moment for IU.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
I feel like, not that they already haven't had a
moment of like, Wow, this guy's for real. He's going
to turn Indiana into something they've never been before. But
this was a result that is undoubtedly impossible to act
like it's not a huge deal, Like it's not impressive. Right,
They were what eleven and one regular season last year,
and their schedules shaped up to where even teams that
were supposed to be good weren't. They can't control that.
(01:25):
But Oregon at Oregon and to go in there and
just get it done. If Kurt Signette wasn't already one
of the crazier stories in college football in recent years,
he certainly is now. But yeah, I didn't think they
get it done, but they did well.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
It's a testament to just what an amazing coach he is.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
He did this at Elon, he did it at James
Madison and bringing that core from James Madison over to IU.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
But I feel really bad for his Michigan state.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
Because they're going to take an absolute brutal bit is
bad and they're just going to take a beating. I mean,
if Indiana didn't take them to the woodshed, it's either
because IU is basically kind of let up a little
bit out with injuries or whatnot.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Emotional letdown after what you did last weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
I don't think that will happen with it.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
And that's what's that's that's the signette factors. I just
don't really see him as the kind of guy who
would have that emotional letdown because he has here here's
the way. I just I think he's got a formula
that just works. I say that like it's so simple,
but he clearly can can can bring a group together.
He can have them all buy in in every way,
(02:26):
and he finds pieces that not only will buy in
that's a big part of it, but also that are
clearly good enough to do what he needs and and
it works. I mean the whole Hey google me, I
win that That's a line that that of course was
was was said with effect of like you know, you
better look you better look me up. Clearly if you're
not familiar, this.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Is what I do.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
But I do think he's one of these guys that
just he's got a process and it works. And uh, Indiana,
I mean, John, you've become You've reminded me of something
that that I never really thought about because whenever I
was when I was watching the game Saturday, I was
telling my friend like, you know, I've got a friend
who I work with that's a big Indian a football fan,
and not a lot of people have many, you know.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
IU fans that are just big football fans.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
And you know, because that's what happens, right when when
you think of when we don't have any connection to
a team and something big happens, rather it be a
big loss or a big win, you you know, you
think of that, you know, somebody comes to mind that
you know might be a big time fan and and
that was you.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
John. So again, I know you had a good week
and hopefully you did enjoy your week off as well, but.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Absolutely how about that was the cherry on top though
on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Well, that means I'm looking forward to the Big Ten
championship game this year.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
I mean Indiana, Ohio State or on a division course
for twelve to zero regular seasons to potentially face off
in the conference championships, So that could be very interesting
to work out that way.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
One thing that is, I don't really know who to blame,
and I'm not really.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Sure what you do about it, but it's I think
one of the least talked about outcomes with these big
expanded conferences is that you're never going to be able
to create a schedule that is consistently as challenging for
everybody when you've got so many teams in these leagues.
There's gonna be teams like Indiana last year where just
because of the way things shaped up, they didn't have
(04:06):
a great challenge week to week in the in the
Big ten. Oh, how is the same way now? High
State they got texasarily got him. That was a big
win for them. They're on cruise control the rest.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Of the work. O.
Speaker 6 (04:16):
MA.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
I just looked at their schedule. It is so case.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I mean, they're gonna, they're gonna, They're gonna cruise.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Right to especially now the Penn State's falling off.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
The way that James Franklin fired, which I think it's
it's one of the biggest surprise firings big picture, but
also in the same token big picture, it's also understandable.
Oh sure, really weird tenure there for him to wear.
He was great, but never got over the hump. And
(04:43):
I think you could have made the case for two
three years that he's he's really maxed out. But then again,
his max out results are pretty good. Most would love
to have that. So then once you start to slip,
it's it's easy to just say, Okay, we've already done
the best we can. Now it's falling. And then the
last two weeks it completely crumbled. I feel like that
(05:05):
was a building thing with James Franklin, to where everybody internally,
all those guys that came back this year, their fans,
they knew.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Okay, have we done all we can do?
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Well, now we bring back this great team who did
win a playoff game last year. Let's see what we
can do. And I mean they lost, they lost. I
don't remember what was their first loss, because that broke them. Yeah,
Oregon broke there. I mean, by the way they came
back and clawed in and now back to back weeks
with Northwestern and UCLA, James Franklin is the only coach
in the history of college football to lose outright back
to back weeks as a twenty plus point favorite.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
And this could be and now it's defined James Franklin
as who he is as a coach because this was
what he endured at Vanderbilt, now Penn State.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
It's gonna be hard. I'll be interesting.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
This guy in up well, all of people think he's
gonna get these interest from these big sec jobs. And
I guess that wouldn't be totally shocking with Vandy, though
he had the built in of like, well, what are.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
You gonna do? Is Vandy?
Speaker 1 (05:53):
The fact the fact that you know Vandy had had
a pulse, but now they've got a.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Coach who's even doing better than book Franklin did. So
a big sports weekend.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Of course, we'll get a and do a lot of
that with Scott throughout the morning, and we'll have some fun.
What I want to do. On the other side, we'll
reset some things. Obviously, the government shut down is still
going on, and it does not look like the two
sides are any anywhere close to getting that thing worked out.
So we'll get to that in a lot more. Don't
go anywhere it is Kentucky. In his morning News Coffee
and Company Fuelbuth Thornton's with you right here on News
Radio eight forty whas Coffee and Company with you, and
(06:23):
we are fueled by Thorntons. Make sure you keep them
in mind as you get your Monday started. They can
help you do exactly that. Of course, they can help
you get fuel for your vehicle. That's, you know, kind
of what they do. But they also can help you
save money. You're gonna save money at the Pomp every
time you go as a member of their refreshment awards program.
Also a lot of good breakfast options and they've got
currently the donut and the coffee for just three bucks,
(06:45):
so take advantage of that. All right, Week three of
the government shutdown is now upon us, and it doesn't
seem as if there's any any real indication that this
is going to end any anytime soon. That could well,
I say that knowing that at any moment it could happen,
and it really wouldn't be considered a shock because obviously
(07:05):
you would expect things to be going on behind the
scenes non stop to try to get it resolved. But
then again, maybe maybe it wouldn't be that big of
a shock if because of where we are right if
you just check the temperature of the contentiousness between the
two sides. Maybe this is the ultimate where it's maybe
this is the ultimate time where maybe we do break
(07:26):
a new record here as far as the shutdown because
of just how divided we are with everything.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Now.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
I don't want to say that to put fear none
of us really have any clue, but certainly the impact
that we feel will will be more there the longer
this the longer this drags out, but it continues, and
roughly seven hundred and fifty thousand federal workers have been furloughed.
The administration even laid off four thousand more Friday. Military
(07:53):
members are getting paid through repurposed Pentagon funds, but civilian
employees they're not. They're not going to be paid right
We're we're right near the middle of the month and
we're getting to the point where the paycheck was supposed
to be there, and the paycheck's not going to be there.
And I say supposed to. They know they're not being
paid until this shut shuts down. But it's just your
(08:13):
I mean, again, this becomes more of a real thing
to you whenever that day is what it is, meaning
the payday that you typically get that again, you're just
waiting for and I know that they're gonna hopefully get well.
I guess depending on comments from last week, I have
a hard time seeing anybody that was supposed to get paid.
But it's not because of this, truly just go without
(08:34):
a check.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
But I don't know.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Maybe maybe maybe I'm crazy to assume that wouldn't be
a real thing that could happen. But again, I think
it's one thing to know and expect it and then
it actually be there right you get to that day.
So you're seeing food banks now that are that are
drying up. There's a surging demand for that as the
federal funds, of course are not coming in. Air travels
(08:57):
being disrupted. Staffing shortages have caused a bunch of flight
delays nationwide, But I will say overall, the air travel impact,
it's certainly one to monitor because that's a constant thing
that we as a I mean, we rely on that
so much. But it doesn't sound like that's been as
big of an issue as maybe we would have expected,
(09:18):
or maybe I don't think it's being misreported, But I
just think because of the coverage of it, in it
being a constant thing, it may be viewed as a nightmare.
And look, if it's you that has a flight that's
delayed and you you know you're in a situation where
you're impacted.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, it is a nightmare, but it's over.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
It says flight delays nationwide or really have been up
about five percent. So again that's that's that's clearly a
sign that that this shutdown has impacted air travel, but
not maybe as bad as you would have expected. But again,
any any impact that you're feeling now right, anything that
has been a direct hit toy. Okay, here we go.
(09:55):
This is because of the government shutdown. It's only going
those things will only get worse till this ends. So
fingers crossed that they come to an agreement and get
this thing resolved sooner rather than later. But again, the
last shut down a record thirty four days and it
cost the US eleven billion in lost economic output, and
already analysts are starting to warn this one could be
(10:18):
worse if it drags on. So we shall see, all right,
quick break traffick and weather updates on the way. We'll
see how the roadways are looking on this Monday morning
from Bobby Ellis. We'll get a look at the forecast
from Matt Melosovich of WLKY, and we've got a sports
update come on your way too, So stick around right here.
It is Coffee and Company fuel by Thornton's on news
radio eight forty whas.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Thank you very much, John Shannon.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
It's five thirty five here on a Monday morning, news
radio eight forty whas. Coffee and Company with you, and
we are fueled by Thornton's. If you guys want to
take us with you wherever you go, you can do that.
Listen live on the iHeartRadio app and within the Ihart
Radio app. We also have the talkback Line presented by
Pseudistracted Driver dot Com Alex are White PLLC. Anytime at
Distracted Driver turns your day upside down, there's going to
(11:00):
be a lot of panic, a lot of questions about
where you go from here. And one of those things
you're going to ask yourself is how do you find
the right personal injury attorney that's going to fight for you.
I can tell you Alex White and his team they
will do exactly that. So again, so Distracted Driver dot
Com Alex Rwhite, PLLC. SO looks like over the weekend
one of the bigger events was one of our own.
(11:22):
We had our Wine on the River down with the
Belvidere and great turnout. I know that that has become
a popular event for us here and it looks as
if that continue to be the case over the weekend
because WDRB did a story on the event, and just
from the visual I wasn't able to get there. I
had some things going on this weekend with my daughter's
(11:42):
baseball game, which was also a great event that I
was happy to see got some news coverage. WDRB and
our partners over at WOK why both came out and
did a story on the UGO baseball team as well
as Cozair Children's Hospital partnering with the Miracle League of
Louisville to just have a phenomenal day. So it is
cool to see both those events kind of featured in
the recap from the weekend with the new stations here
(12:03):
as far as just things that went on in the city.
But yes, Wan on the River was a big hit
and good weather turned out to be a great day
for it right up there on the on the Belvitere,
and I was looking at the w DRB story that
that I guess was put out yesterday, and I was
so happy to see that they went interviewing folks about
(12:24):
the event, or guess interviewing people from my heart about
the event. They went with the one and only Austin
Montgomery to see him on television last night and to
read this WDRB article and get the quote from him
was he's become in John, You're kind of the same
way guys that I've worked with for a while that
have become friends. That it's not like I look at
you guys as my children, because obviously there's not a
(12:46):
huge age difference, but guys younger than me that you know,
do a lot and always happy to see any level
of success.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
I was happy to I was happy for.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
John when he made the move to produce on eight
to forty, but I also lost him as a producer,
so it was a little bittersweet for me, and but
it was only temporary. Yeah, now we're reunited and it's great.
But Austin, he was my producer when John moved on,
and he's been with me helping produce different shows I've
been a part of for a while here as far
as just filling in or postgame shows that kind of stuff.
But he he really does almost to everything. Like I'm
(13:18):
not sure what his title.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Could be, because he's.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Got his he's got his hand in a little bit
of everything that is that is important around here. He
produces shows, he's a big part of our promotions team.
You also hear him on WAMZ over the weekend, and
I don't know if you I doubt he was compensated
anything extra for being on television. I mean, he was
doing all of us a favor putting that big, beautiful
beard on TV. But yeah, it was cool to see
(13:43):
him be the face of the story as far as
our end for My Heart Louisville. But yeah, go check
it out at WDRB dot com. They've got a nice
little write up about it and LK why same thing.
So again, nice to know we can still have events
that we're a part of. Of course, there's never a
doubt that we're going to make it happen.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
That's what we do. We have big events.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
We're iHeart but Downtown Louisville. I'm telling you if you've not,
and I feel like it's not even really worth saying,
because I can't imagine that there are people that just
still don't come downtown Louisville because they're fearful of it
being some borded a war zone.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
That's just not the case.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
And again, if you're fearful of being in downtown Louisville
because of you know, violent crime, that kind of stuff, understandable.
But it's not just downtown Louisville where that can be
an issue. And we have a lot of cool stuff downtown.
And I just when I see people out enjoying it,
and I'm like, you know what, this is great. I
wish others would, would you know, come out and enjoy
all the great things we have going on downtown. So that,
(14:34):
of course just one of the many, many events that
took place in recent weeks that.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Again can only help.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
And I feel like that that that stigma has faded
a little bit as far as just people just deciding, yeah,
that's the last thing I'm gonna do is go downtown Louisville.
But if you are someone still of that belief, you're
missing out because we got a lot of a lot
of good to offer. And I say this all the
time when it comes to people who aren't from here
that end up here for whatever reason. Maybe they're seeking
(15:03):
out a trip, or maybe they're stopping here along the
way on a bigger trip and they end up realizing, Hey,
this city, I don't really know what to expect, but
it's kind of awesome that that makes me happy as
somebody who of course loves Louisville and wants to see
it prosper. But also you know, if you're here you
don't love it, you should. There's a lot to love
do Again, we got our own issues like anybody else, right,
(15:24):
including something else we're gonna have to talk about here
before too long, which is a real scary thing. But
there's there's some I guess you'd call them. I mean,
people are showing up overnight in different neighborhoods in groups
of four or five and and and armed with guns
and stealing cars, which, uh, that happens from time to time. Again,
that's not that uncommon this day and age, but it
(15:45):
sounds like there's there's a crew essentially that law enforcement
wants you to be aware of because they're they're they're
not hiding that they're that they're showing up armed. So
we'll get to that in more, but next we'll be
joined by Rory and Eil of NBC News Looking forward
to catching up with r from over the weekend and
next though traving weather updates right here right now on
news Radio eight forty whas. It is Kentucky and it's
(16:08):
morning news, Coffee and company with you here on news
Radio eight forty whas we are fueled by Thorntons and
we are now welcome AARORYO on a live NBC News Rory,
How are we doing this morning?
Speaker 6 (16:18):
Doing well? Nick? How are you? Happy Monday?
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Happy Monday to you, my friends. Certainly a lot to
get to from over the weekend. We'll start with HAMAS
releasing twenty remaining living hostages. As this, I guess this
part process of peace in getting things I guess resolved
as best as possible. What can you tell us about
the latest year with the hostages?
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Yeah, it's all unfolding right now.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
So in the first round of releases, seven hostages were
turned over to the IDF and then they were taking
the hospitals. That a couple hours later, about an hour
or so ago, the remaining thirteen were released. Those are
the thirteen and seven. That's the twenty living hostages. That
means HAMAS still has the remains of twenty eight other hostages.
(17:02):
That have to be turned over. Israel has started the
process of sending bus loads of Palestinians back into Gaza.
That's about thirteen hundred Palestinians are about to be released
in this some of them serving life sentences, so they
are now in the process of being turned over. And present,
we're awaiting President Trump addressing the Parliament of Israel, the Kanesset,
(17:23):
that could be happening anytime now. And then the President,
after meeting with some of the hostages and their families,
will be traveling to Egypt to talk about the future
of Gaza, perhaps with Prime Minister Yahoo even the new
acting leaders of.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
Love of Egypt of course.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
Roy and NILIVNBC News is our guest joining us Serra
on news Radio eight forty Whas I tell you what
when it comes to the government shutdown, we're now at
week three and do we know what agencies have maybe
been hit the hardest with these layoffs that are coming.
And it sounds like this is the week where it
wasn't something that people were unaway, but this will be
when it becomes, I guess more real, where paychecks won't
(18:03):
be there.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Well, right, So a few things, so we've got about
eight hundred thousand federal workers who were furloughed.
Speaker 6 (18:09):
That means that you're all sent home.
Speaker 7 (18:10):
Now, a lot of those also have to they actually
have to work, and they are people who are TSA screeners,
FBI agents, air traffic controllers.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
They have to work unpaid. Now.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
We got word on Friday that about forty one hundred
federal workers who were sent home are being told you
know what, don't come back, thank you for your service,
your time here is done. Places like the Department of Education,
they really took the brunt of it because they're really
trying to eliminate that department altogether.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
In the CDC, by the way, they sent.
Speaker 7 (18:43):
A lot of people home and then over the weekend
said whoops, are bad.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
We didn't mean all of you.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
So they're redoing some of those or they started that
process over the weekend.
Speaker 6 (18:53):
So we're trying to get a more accurate number.
Speaker 7 (18:54):
We're just really hearing from the labor unions about just
how many people have been let go. And to your
final point, yes, this is the week they're supposed to
be getting paid.
Speaker 6 (19:03):
Some federal workers will be getting a paid.
Speaker 7 (19:05):
Check that just represents up through September thirtieth, so it's
going to be a small check. Others in the active
duty military. President Trump has said, I want those guys
and girls to.
Speaker 6 (19:16):
Be paid easier. Send the done.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
There's got to be some you know, we've got to
make sure they have the cash, and that's something that
we just haven't finalized yet, but they are a top
priority making sure the active duty service memans are paid
again because Congress is getting paid even though the government
shut down.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Am I crazy to think that, yes, yeah, well yeah,
I walked into that one. But when it comes to
the effects that we're already feeling this in this situation,
I just think even if it's if it's minimal, but
you can clearly tell okay, this is an issue, nothing huge,
but it's because of this shutdown. I feel like there's
really those things are only going to potentially get worse
(19:55):
until this comes to an end.
Speaker 6 (19:57):
Well, right, and people will start to see you know,
today federal.
Speaker 7 (20:00):
Holiday in most of the countries, so you already have
you know, there's no mail delivery today. That's not shut
down related, that's because of the Columbus Day holiday. But
you know, people are having a tough time getting flood
insurance and when you're trying to buy a new home
and you live in a flood prone area, you're going
to have to have that flood insurance. So there are
people are having issues there and issues trying to you know, hey,
wait a minute, my grandma's Social Security check wasn't right.
(20:22):
You try to call the number or email and no
one is there to pick up the phone. So it's
a lot of those kind of little things, and that
pile is just going to keep stacking up. And of
course the people going to work, the TSA screeners, the
air traffic controllers, you know, you go to work and
not get paid. And the last time this happened in
twenty eighteen to nineteen, it was thirty five days of
not getting paid.
Speaker 6 (20:43):
And you and I've talked before.
Speaker 7 (20:44):
Most Americans can't afford five hundred bucks, let alone going
without paid for a month.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
No doubt about it. Rory is always appreciate your time,
enjoyed the rest of your day. We'll talk tomorrow morning.
Thanks big, It's Rory O'Neil of NBC News. Again, if
you go without a paid check and you know that
you'll have bench get it, that's better than no money
coming in and no idea when or where it may
be coming from. But I just think there's there's a
there's a human element here to it feeling more real
(21:12):
when you get to that day.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
But God speed.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Hopefully this is resolved sooner rather than later. All right,
let's get to a quick time out. We'll check on
