Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six oh five here in a Monday morning. It is
Kentucky in his Morning News Coffee and Company with you,
and we are fueled by Thornton's Nick Coffee. That's me
John Alden back with us, and of course the rest
of the crew is here as well, John Shannon, Scott Fitzgerald.
Take us with you wherever you go. Listen live on
the iHeartRadio app. Also listen live at whas dot com.
Hopefully you had yourselves a good weekend, and hopefully if
(00:21):
you are somebody sitting in traffic right now on the
Gene Snyder, that you aren't sitting there too long. But
it does look as if there's some real delays on
Snyder East around Bulach Church Road due to an accident.
You've got the left shoulder in the left lane blocked.
As I look at the camera view here from Trymark,
not a whole lot going. But hopefully they get that
(00:42):
cleaned up sooner rather than later, and hopefully we have
a smooth Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Right.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Traffic's never good any day, but on a Monday, maybe
you're dragging a little bit. Last thing you want is
to maybe be sitting in traffic late to work, all right,
So a big weekend overall when it comes to college football, right,
We've talked a little bit about Indiana and just how
I mean they're tapping into something that I do believe
(01:07):
could could be not just sustainable, but you know, Indiana's
got a lot of fans. It's They've got a passionate
fan base. They've just never been in a situation like
this with football. And the win against Oregon, it's to
no fault of Signettes last year, you could understand.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Why people would doubt just how special it was.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Right, maybe that's not the right way to describe it,
because it was specially regardless of the skin them winning
at that level is just unheard of for their program.
But again for those who thought it was a cute
see kind of thing, and you know, we'll see once
the schedule balances out that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
That's really that's understandable.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Right, Some people did it just to be haters and whatnot,
but like you could, unfortunately it was really not their
fault at all, but the schedule didn't do them any
favors well to have a start like this, to go
on the road and beat Iowa and then go on
the road and beat Oregon, who was believed to be
maybe the top team in the Big Ten alongside Ohio State.
I mean that was a statement, and Kurt Signetti has
(02:05):
just been I mean, he's been the story I think
the last couple of years in college football. And when
I say they're getting into something that's really been untapped,
it's that who knows, Like May if he keeps things rolling,
which is gonna be hard for him to you know,
may be a victim of his own success as far
as just like they make the playoff this year, he'll
be two for two and then anything else is gonna
(02:26):
be looked at as a letdown, which is kind of crazy.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
But hey, I guess that's a good problem to have.
But I just Indiana.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
To me, I'm thirty seven, So Indiana basketball is what
I think of when I think of IU sports, and honestly,
in my lifetime, they really haven't had a whole lot
of national relevance in hoops. I watched the end of
the Bobby Knight era. They did make that random championship
game in Mike Davis's first year, and they've had moments,
but they've kind of just been sitting. I mean, they're
(02:52):
viewed as the program that is has been in the
eyes of most and I'm not gonna say that as
an insult.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
I think the results will justify that.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
But I've always argued Indiana they've got everything you need
to be successful in basketball, just like the other elite programs,
they just haven't had it in a while because of
honestly coaching hires. So if they do get the right
higher in hoops, maybe that's debreas and maybe they get rolling.
I'm not going to be shocked because again, what do
they not have that you need to be elite in hoops?
(03:20):
Maybe we're now learning what do they not have that
you need to be elite in football?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Right?
Speaker 1 (03:24):
I mean, I know history and tradition and culture, that
stuff is valuable, but now you can get by without
it in this new world where you can make up
for that with money, right, And the more you win,
the more money you have from people that want to
throw it at you to help you buy players that
kind of stuff. And I think an example here of Indiana. Again,
(03:50):
I don't know what the history culture would be described
at pre Signetti, but this is new. It's not like, well, hey,
they've had so many variations where they really tried they
had some success and it wasn't sustainable. They were just
pretty flat right, and they were you know, they didn't
win a lot, right. They weren't good. I'm not acting
like they were decent. They weren't good. But it was
(04:10):
also just a thing that Indiana never really cared about football, right.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
I think it's different. If you care, you invest in,
you stink. They didn't.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
They didn't really prioritize it because they didn't really care,
and now they do to where I think that helps
you avoid the well, you know, I mean Signetty, why
would he stayed Indiana? They can never win, He'll never
win there. Why can't he again?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
They have him before?
Speaker 1 (04:32):
But it was almost and it sounds foolish to say
because it was a lack of trying, but they never
prioritized it. And now they're prioritizing it because they got
a taste of what it's like to be good. And
I just I think with all the jobs that are
now open already, I mean, what do we have.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
We got Penn State, we've got.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Got Oklahoma State, you got Virginia Tech.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
And then you know, UAB is not going to be
in the same realm because of where they are eu CLA. Yeah, So,
I mean, I don't think any of those jobs right
now would be attractive enough to pull him away from
I think.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
There's only one job where I, as a fan, would
be genuinely worried, and that job's not going to come
up with this year. I would imagine that's Alabama. You
look at Kaylyn de bor where he was a national
runner up with Washington and he made the jump over
to Alabama.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
If you're a Hoosier fan, which of course most of
you know, John is, you got to be happy to
see that Caylen de borr is riding a little momentum
right now because he needs it, and obviously that would
keep him there longer if they were able to make
a run to the College Football Playoff. But then again,
I don't know. I just I think that when it
comes to coaches and their safety, I really, I mean,
(05:43):
you just never know.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Plus, Signetty's sixty four years old, he's probably got He's
probably got less than ten years I would imagine left
in the game, and he may just retire happily in
Bloomington and see how much success he can have in
you know, six, seven, eight years.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Two things that are unknown about him just because he's
he's kind of a new me certainly a face to
the world of college football, and he's made a big
splash in the last.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Couple of years.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
But is he somebody that really values being at a
program that has that brand name? And he might, he
might not. You really don't know. And also, yes, he's older,
but he's really just now getting the limelight and he's
I mean, he's the rock star of college football right now.
So despite being a little bit older, maybe that doesn't
(06:25):
mean he's got any ten to fifteen year plan.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Who knows.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
I didn't realize he was that old. I knew he
was older, but he's impressive, and the win for Indiana
over the weekend, I do think for those that still
felt like, yeah, this is just they're better, but let's
calm down. Well, I mean I wouldn't want to play
him right now, and now I'm thinking, well, thank you
Signetti and whoever will Tom Allen for getting out of
that Louisville series. I mean, who knows what would have
(06:49):
happened in that game. We'll never know. But Indiana, I mean,
they are for real, which again still weird to say,
but it's the truth. It is the truth. All right,
let's get to a quick time. I will get caught
up up on the roadways obviously. Again, we got a
situation on near Buller Church Road on the Snyder eastbound.
There's some backup there. We'll get the latest on that
and a lot more right here on news radio eight
forty whas So, Amazon is paying out one point five
(07:15):
billion dollars in Prime refunds, So one of those things
you could potentially cash in on. So first it was Facebook.
Now Amazon has millions of Americans set to receive payouts
after they agreed to a settlement in this one. I
don't think it's going to be a lucrative settlement individually, right,
but a lot of money going out to a lot
of different people. The FTC suit Amazon here recently claiming
(07:38):
the company tricked people into signing up for Prime, and
that total settlement is two point five billion, with one
point five billion designated for refunds. So eligible customers are
those who enrolled in Prime without consent since twenty nineteen
and use fewer than three Prime benefits. Payouts could reach
up to fifty one dollars per person. So keep that
(08:00):
I would imagine I'm probably a part of that. To
be honest with you, maybe I'm wrong. I will say
the AT and T settlement that got a lot of
attention in the last month or so, And I guess
I should be thinking Rory O'Neil because it was a
story that we discussed with Rory, and my wife had
heard it and she looked into it and we were
one of I guess many that was entitled to and
(08:22):
I'm not sure what it was, but a few hundred bucks.
I think, I don't know if we ever got it.
Maybe she's already spent it and I don't know about it.
But I usually just assume, well, if there's anybody that
you know, I just may not that I feel like, oh,
I would never get this lucky. I just never really
assumed that I would.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
I guess maybe more than anything, if I'm owed money,
I feel like somebody's gonna tell me. But these are
the kind of things specifically that you need to you.
They're gonna make you reach out and go through a
process to determine if in fact you are somebody that
could be entitled to money because of a lawsuit. So again, Facebook,
AT and T, Amazon, they may owe you money, So
do your due diligence and see if you were somebody
(08:59):
that could could take advantage of that. I'll tell you
what you can take advantage of, and that is my
friends over at the Louisville Men's Clinic. You could take
advantage of the variety of services that they offer to
help you become a happier and healthier man. When it
comes to low testostro, and it's something you may not
even realize that you're dealing with, you could lose your edge,
become lethargic, start to develop some belly fat that you're
(09:22):
not used to. And I guess there's a lot of
factors that could have led you to that, but one
of those factors that you may not even think about
could be low testostrone.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
So get your levels checked.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
I never thought about it until I realized, hey, something's
not right here. I know I'm getting older, but this
just doesn't make sense. And sure enough, my levels were
not where they're supposed to be and now they are
thanks to the treatment, and I feel great. They also
can help you out when it comes to a rectildisfunction.
They've got a variety of ways to treat a rectile
dysfunction and regardless of whatever option is best for you,
(09:49):
if it doesn't work, you don't have to pay them anything,
So keep that in mind. They stand by what they
can do for you. And can't recommend them enough. Go
see them at Louisvillemen's Clinic dot com or or you
give them a call FAB two four four four four thousand.
All right, let's get an update on the roadways. We'll
see how traffic is looking this morning. Bobby Ellis will
get us caught up. Also, we've got a check of
(10:10):
the forecast. Gonna be warm today, near eighty I believe,
which isn't too bad, but a little warmer than what
we're used to in mid October. But that's okay, So again,
stick around for that. Also, we've got a sports update
coming up right here on news Radio eight forty whas.
Thank you very much, John Shannon. Happy to hear one
of those stories. I'm sure if you were listening you
(10:30):
knew which one. Not that I wasn't happy to hear
all the great coverage there from John Shannon. Yes, Saturday
at Jim Patterson Stadium was an awesome, awesome day the
UFL baseball players. I did not know they would be
as involved as they were.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
But it was great.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
So the Miracle League of Louisville had their entire league
one hundred and fifty kids total, I believe, a total
of six games that started in the morning and ran
up until early afternoon. But each week they typically play
at Fern Creek Park, where my daughter's been in the
league for the last couple of years. And it's awesome.
But the send off for fall ball was awesome playing
at Jim Patterson Stadium, and you could tell the kids
(11:08):
knew that they were they were in the big leagues essentially.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
And uh, it.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Was your typical game that we have each and every week,
two innings each uh, each team gets a chance to
have everybody bat twice and UH it was pretty routine
as far as just the game itself, but being out
there on that field, you could tell there was an
added added level of excitement from from everybody involved, from
from the players, uh to the parents and of course
even even UFO Baseball players. Dam McDonald of course was
(11:34):
there and he talked about his players receiving a lot
of praise and uh and just thanks for myself, I mean,
I walked each player that was there helping out on
the field during my daughter Maya's game. I made a
point to tell him thanks for being out there. And
but back to Dan McDonald's comments, he mentioned that despite
all that praise that they're getting, and I think it's
(11:56):
well deserved, he said he felt like that that they
actually got more out of it than than the other
way around. And I totally know exactly what he means,
because I think that that's really why. I think if
you if you've never experienced something like that and you
have no real connection to it, right, I mean a
lot of people go to these games each week. They
have a child who plays, or they have a granddaughter, grandson,
(12:18):
or they have somebody they know that is that is
in the league. But if you've never checked it out,
I think you you would you would realize that it
it'd be good for you. I mean, again I am
a little biased here, but uh yeah, I could tell
just those those and this is something you pick up
as as the parent of a specially needs kid who
is gonna, you know, hope that that inclusion continues to grow,
(12:39):
and certainly there are always going to be challenges there
with that, but I love to to really prop up
the signs that, uh, there is a level of inclusion
now that wasn't there at least when I was younger.
So anyways, Uh, you know, you always notice things a
little differently when you're in the situation as a parent.
But you can tell whenever someone is uneasy about being
(13:01):
around somebody that is mentally disabled, handicapped, just special needs
in general, just because they're not they've not been exposed
to it a whole lot. And that's nobody's fault. That's
just life sometimes, right, if you've never I mean, I
will say this, I before my daughter, I didn't have
anybody in my life on a regular basis that that
was of special needs, and and because of that, I
(13:22):
didn't really have anything to to to to reference as
far as just what it's like to be around that.
But I think when you see someone not knowing, maybe
being a little uneasy and then realizing that, you know.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
You just see their joy, that is that is matched.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Right. You clearly can tell whenever the players were interacting
with the kids that the kids knew that, hey, this
isn't just mom or dad out there playing with me
like each and every Saturday. These are guys that you know,
I mean, heck, there was some guys for U of L.
I'm assuming some of the pictures that were, you know,
towering over all of us out there at about six
five sixty six, and you know, to see as the
(13:57):
game went on them get the players, get more comfortable
and really seemingly get something out of it.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
It was.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
It was a beautiful thing to see. So thank you
John for referencing that. And again, not only was it
was it mentioned here this morning by us, but two
of the local stations out there covering it for good reason,
because the the more you can shine the spotlight on
something like that, again selfishly, the better I think it
is for just the awareness of of of the league
and the support that it that it hopefully continues to get,
(14:24):
but just more people that you know, there's if there's
seven eight people this year, I'm sure there's way more
than that that came out and just decided to check
it out because they they happened before. If that continues
to grow, then then that's going to make me really happy.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Mary Greenberg, I wasn't. We were actually out of town
the one game that she missed during springball.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
He and his wife Rachel, they were actually I think
at the park fron Creek Park doing something for a different,
different event, different different engagement. And one of the the
one of the guys who helps run the Miracle League,
happened to see Mary Greenberg and and and talk to
him and encourage him to come out for a game.
And sure enough he and his wife Rachel did and
they participated. And I told him ahead of time, Hey,
(15:04):
you're gonna have a ball. It's gonna be a lot
of fun. And I don't think he doubted me. I
don't think he thought I was lying, but he reached
out to me right after they had played. I wish
we'd have been there that gay that day, but you know,
he emphasized, you were right. We both had a great time.
That was awesome. So you know, the more people to
do that, the better. So again, thank you for including
that this morning. And hey, it is news. It was
(15:25):
a big, big deal a Jim Patterson over the weekend.
A lot of high level baseball going on, a lot
of good vibes too. All right, we'll talk more with
this government shutdown, and we are now getting to week three,
and clearly this is this is where it starts to
become real for folks who are going to be missing
a paycheck. It'll be delayed because it's one thing to
know it, it's another thing to feel it once you
get there. So we'll talk about that and a lot more.
(15:47):
A new Google update tells us the trendiest Halloween costumes
to expect this year, and I really feel like an
old man because I'm not up on trends. Apparently, I
got people that are going to be coming to my
house dressed as the new hot costume to do this year,
and I may have to ask them, what are you
all right? Don't go anywhere, keep it locked right here.
On Who's Radio eight forty w HS. What's our vibe today,
(16:10):
mister John Olton? I'm liking it.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
I kind of on it, but I like it. It's
all over the place, as it usually is. It kind
of varies by the hour.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
I feel like, yeah, I'm liking it, and we're happy
to have you back.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Did you enjoy Fall Break? I did the first weekend.
We went up to Brown County, Indiana, which was nice.
We've done that every couple of years. And then this
Poles play and we were out in eastern Kentucky at
a cabin with my family in Ashland. So that was
nice too.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
I'm glad you I do. Ad got to do a
little traveling and.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Took Daisy to her first pumpkin patch. It was very adorable.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
That's a big that's a big moment, the first one. Yeah,
I tell you what. The weather was on your side.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Right, absolutely, the first real week of fall weather. I
feel like we had yep, good stuff. Happy to happy
to have you back.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
And if you are somebody that gets gets the day
off for Columbus Day, then you may be having an
extra day of your vacation if you took fall break
off like John did last week. So my kids are
out of school today, But it's not because of the holiday,
I don't think, or maybe it is.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
I know that it's a bullet day, bullet counting.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
So teachers have to work, but kids don't, right, that's correct.
And they've been hooking these kids up in recent years
because I feel like these bullet days oftentimes end up
falling after you've already had some time off to where
it's like one more day to kind of ease, you know,
get get back to where you know, one more day
to get to get set to get back into your routine.
But yeah, I don't. I don't know how I feel
like I should know this, but I'm not sure if
(17:31):
this is a if this is a holiday that that
that a lot of the schools give off for but uh,
if so, enjoy your day off. But uh, real quick,
the government shut down again. It there's really not a
huge update as far as where they are. But it
does seem as if the update if you, if you,
if you really want to provide an update, if you're
(17:52):
tasked to say, hey, where are we, I'd say it
it's that three weeks in, it doesn't look like there's
any sign that that the finger pointing is going to stop,
and it looks like it's really only going to get
worse again. None of us really know. I mean, I
will admit anything, could anything is out there, as far
as something that I won't be totally stunned by, As
far as just if this does last longer than the
(18:12):
record of thirty something days, thirty seven days, I believe
I can't say that would be a stunter. And if
they find a way to this week get it resolved,
that won't shock me, because this will be the week
where it becomes real for a lot of folks out
there that knew they weren't going to get paid, but
now that day is where typically you would have funds
that you need to live and then they're not there. Again,
I think it's one thing to know it's going to
(18:33):
happen and it's on the way. It's another thing to
actually have the realization of you sitting there, still putting
in work and the money is not in your bank account.
So over seven hundred and fifty thousand federal workers are
now out of work because of this, and some of
it has been direct layoffs that are going to keep you,
that are going to cost you your job permanently. And
then others, of course, are just furloughs and those aren't
(18:56):
you know, those that aren't working because of this potential shutdown.
So as far as airlines, again you're going to continue
to see that as as one of the probably most
talked about impacts right now. As far as what it's
done to you know, the everyday American, how are they
that you know that doesn't rely on a paycheck from
the government, how are they feeling the effect of this?
And again, airline will always be mentioned, but I do
(19:17):
think if you look at the numbers it it hasn't
been maybe as bad as you would you would expect.
And I'm not saying that we're being misled by fearmongering.
It just I think it was. Obviously when you hear
of the air traffic controllers not showing up to work
and that being in, you know clearly you're going to
have delays. But as far as the percentage of it,
I don't, you know. Put it this way, it's not
(19:38):
as bad as I thought when you look when I
looked at the numbers. But I will say, now that
we're here and and the paychecks are are not going
to be there, maybe you see more people inclined to
go ahead and call in and say that they're sick
and they're not coming to work right now. Even if
it's a little teeny tiny effect that you're feeling right
now from this shutdown, that's only going to worsen and
(19:59):
there's going to be other things maybe you haven't noticed
just yet that start to creep in, because that's just
the process of how these things work. So again, fingers crossed,
hopefully sooner rather than later they can get that they
can get that worked out all right, we've got an
update of Trappick and weather coming your way. Also another
sports update coming up right here on news Radio eight
forty whas
