Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's get it started. Welcome in, Happy Tuesday
to you. It's one of those mornings where I haven't
done a whole lot of yapp in pre five oh
six am, and I feel like I should have. I
should have taken allergy pill. I don't know what's going on,
but uh, I feel like I feel like I sound
like I've got a cold. But look, I'll power through.
That's what we do. It is Kentucky, It's morning News,
Coffee and Company with you, and we are Field about
Thornton's here our news radio eight forty whas you know
(00:22):
the drill. We've got our full squad in the house today,
Nick Coffee. That's me Scott Fitzgerald alongside John Shannon, John Olden,
and we'll do what we typically do. We'll give you
what you've come to expect. Weather updates, traffic updates, news updates,
and some nonsense mixed within that. Is that is that
okay to say? Do you guys mind me saying that?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
And I don't want to throw you. I don't want
to attach you guys to nonsense. If you if it's
if it's beneath you.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
No, you mentioned it's funny you mentioned that you were
feeling like you had allergies. My wife's been complaining that
she feels a little off, feel a little dizzy, and
I think I've had something going on with the allergies too.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
I mean, I'm still I guess I could. I could
educate myself, but as somebody who's lived here my whole life,
I never even I could not relate to anybody that
had allergies that are really bad in the spring or
really bad, That's what I'm saying. Like, as we come
out of the summer into fall, is that a time
where allergies get bad? Because I know in the spring.
This past spring was the ultimate reminder for me, all right,
(01:16):
I need to have a plan. I can't just raw
dog the spring and expect to not have fat, puffy eyes,
a scratchy, itchy throat and nose. But I was immune
to it for a long time and then I wasn't.
So Yeah, last night I was out throwing football with
my son before it got dark, and I could see
something visibly just floating in the air that looked like
(01:37):
something that would give me allergies, And I guess that's
what it was. Because the eyes are burning and now
again I feel like I needed to blow my nose. Yeah,
it's it's clearly because it's been so dry too.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
You've had a lot of dry we passed the rain
and that'll trigger a lot of stuff too, So I
think you're not.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Alone there, bro. But again, we power through. No days
off around here, that's right, We fight through. So I mean,
there's no doubt right now that the biggest story in
the world is certainly what happened in the last couple
of days where we now have I mean, this is
a historic moment for a variety of reasons. But what
I've found to be kind of unexpected. Maybe it just
(02:13):
wasn't on my radar, but to see the overwhelming amount
of people who are going out of their way to
not yell about politics and point fingers about sort of
the situation that we're in as far as just how
divided we are. I mean, our government is currently shut down,
but people are I think just having a hard time
not getting out their phone and firing off something about
(02:35):
how moved they are to see these hostages reunited with
their family, and that mean, first of all, that's awesome
to see, but like, is it a sign. Is this
a sign that we are headed in the right direction
to at least just not being as toxic as we are.
Because again, this is one of those moves where it'd
be hard for you, I think, to not praise President
(02:57):
Trump for this. I think you could make the case.
And again it's all personal opinion, I suppose, but this
may be one of the biggest diplomatic wins in either
of his presidencies. As far as just how it feels
right now in the moment, I could be off there,
but it sort of just maybe that's recency bias, but
it just feels that way, and you're seeing I mean,
the Clintons praise him, Joe Biden praise him, and his
administration has hell roze over. So it to me, I
(03:21):
think that's a positive sign that maybe we are at
least making improvement when it comes to just, you know,
realizing that we're never going to change each other's minds
as far as one day everybody's going to be a
Republican or one day everybody's going to be a Democrat,
but just realizing that, accepting it, and embracing it, right,
I mean, I don't know, I feel like as I
(03:43):
kind of sit and feel like I'm just looking at
it from a thirty thousand feet view, this seems to
be at least somewhat of a positive movement in the
direction of everything.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
It is no doubt, Nick, And like you, I was
looking at social media when this was going down yesterday.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
It is truly it is a historic moment.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
You're right to point that out this morning as we
wake up to see hostages on both sides. And then
of course the President speaking in front of the because
I always say it wrong, so forgive me if I
butchered the consentate.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Sounds good to me, all right, right to see him
and to see him make that trip to the Middle East.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
And you know, I was looking for some of the
social media blowback from the Trump detractors, and there really
wasn't any. And that was refreshing in a lot of ways,
because I think yesterday was the day I really kind
of paid attention. Like not that I don't pay attention
to the news.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
I pay more attention to.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Our local news here we have going on here more
than I do the national But I found myself doalting
more to the national networks yesterday, trying to gauge the pulse,
trying to gauge the reaction not only by us on
social media just you, me and the average Joe, but
the media sure, and it was very complimentary, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
And I think there's I think the human elements is
always going to be a powerful thing that you regardless
of how charged up you are about politics and whatnot.
Not to say that you shouldn't be invested in knowledgeable,
but some people I think really let it consume them
more than they probably should. And what I mean by
that is that their life would probably be better off
(05:08):
if they just lived it and didn't have that on
their mind twenty four to seven. But I think just
seeing the raw emotion from those families that are reunited,
the human element is a powerful thing to where your
instant thought and feeling, your energy is not about politics.
It's about like how sweet that is? I mean, because
it's a powerful thing to see, right.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Listen to some of the stories too, as some of
these hostages gone through the treatment and what they endured.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
I went I spent a lot of time reading about
the hostages and whatnot and just their stories, and again
that's the human just relating to people. And again clearly
they're much different than a lot of us. We're all different,
all across the planet, but we're also all humans, right,
and it was a powerful thing to see those families reunited.
I can't imagine, and most of us are in the
same boat realizing, Wow, that would be really, really tough,
(05:54):
but great for them to be back together. You can
see the happiness, So good news, no doubt. All right,
let's get to our first update on the roadways out there.
We'll see how we're looking. Bobby Ellis will get us
caught up. I know yesterday was brutal when it comes
to right after I left, I noticed there were two
different areas not far from my commute that had things
shut down. So let's hope we get a better morning
(06:15):
as far as accidents and traffic. But regardless of what's
going on, Bobby Ellis is going to keep u up
date to Matt Melosovich has our forecast as it looks
as if we're going to have another warm start to
the week, so stick around right here, it is news
Radio eight forty whas Coffee and company with you, and
we are fueled by Thornton's It is five seventeen here
at news Radio eight forty Whas. Thanks for hanging out
with us here on a Tuesday morning, coffee and company
(06:37):
with you, and we are fueled by Thornton's. Let Thornton's
help you get your morning started, stop it and see
them today. They've got a lot of good breakfast options,
delicious coffee, and they currently have the three for seven
Monster Energy drinks, which is my go to. So one
of the many reasons you should stop in. And I'm
telling you, whatever it is that you're thinking for breakfast,
(06:58):
whatever you're feeling right, maybe you want donuts, They've got
you covered. A lot of options when it comes to
just donuts specifically, but a lot of different breakfast sandwiches,
breakfast burritos, breakfast tacos. So again, we are proudly feel
about Thornton's. If you are in the Kentuckyana area, then
there's likely one close to you because they're all over Kentuckyana.
So again shout out to our friends over there at Thornton's.
So we talked as we started the show, as you
(07:20):
could expect, about the biggest story really in the world,
which is the peace in the Middle East. And it
seems as if this is from what I can tell,
and again maybe it's maybe it's recency bias, but it
really does feel like this may be the biggest diplomatic
win for Donald Trump to where, at least in the now,
(07:41):
in the moment, it feels as if he's not just
because it's not just that, because look, I think you
would have a tough time going out of your way
to spin this as something that you know he did wrong.
I mean, I think you look foolish. But also there
are folks who probably are having a really tough time
(08:02):
doing it, but they're doing it. They're acknowledging this is great,
and he and his administration they did it, so no
doubt that that's and I can't be the only one
that sees that. And it feels like, wow, that's a surprise.
This stands out. I wasn't expecting that. But here here's
Trump yesterday.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
All across the Middle East, the forces of chaos, terra
and ruin that have plagued the region for decades now
stand weakened, isolated, and totally defeated. A new coalition of
proud and responsible nations is emerging. And because of us,
the enemies of all civilization are in retreat. Thanks to
(08:46):
the bravery and incredible skill of the Israeli Defense Forces
and Operation Rising Lion.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
So we'll have more on this developing Sitch situation with
Rory O'Neil NBC News. He's going to join us coming
up here at about five forty five. We'll talk some
sports with Scott Fitzgerald. I'm not sure if this is
going to be in the sports update that he's got
for us here to get the morning started. But obviously
we've got a college basketball season that is coming up
here any I mean, I think, what is it a
(09:18):
week two weeks away? I know the scrimmage Louisvill's got
against Kansas that's right around the corner. But we've got
the ap pole for the preseason college hoops that came
out yesterday, and you've got Louisville Kentucky back in the
top eleven Louisville and eleven Kentucky just inside the top ten.
And that's the way it's supposed to be around here,
and it's been a while since that has been the case.
(09:41):
The Hoosiers there the top twenty five, right, John, I
don't think they are actually real. I missed it, and
I wasn't setting you up to kind of, you know,
take it take a jab, because I.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Don't mean right now with what did devise. Everything is unproven,
everything's brand new and more to see how things work out.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
That's true, And to be fair, last year they had
a great roster on paper, they did, and it just
you know, work out, all right, Let's get to an
update of trafficking weather sports with Scott on the other side.
Right here, it's a news radio eight forty whas it
looks like, so far so good on the roadways. Obviously
there's construction going on that could cause some delays, but
(10:15):
I don't believe it's anything new, meaning it's probably something
you are used to by now. But so far, so good.
We'll let you know if that changes. Actually, we're gonna
let you know regardless because that's what we do. Coming
up here in about five minutes, Bobby Ellis will tell
us if there's any update there. Also, we'll get another
look at the forecast here on what is expected to
be a beautiful but warm Tuesday. I know I'm ready
for ball weather and it's not going to be summer warm,
(10:38):
but I think mid seventies and sunny, so I guess
that's that's pretty good. But after this past weekend I
mentioned yesterday, I went to Kentucky Kingdom. They had a
great setup for the for the Halloween trick or treat.
I mean, I don't really know what they're calling it,
but think pumpkins everywhere. An insane amount of pumpkins I
think called pumpkins like it's a VERYOUSI given how many
(11:01):
pumpkins were there, John, that might you might be right.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
It's very simple, but you know it's it's accurate.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Yeah, I'm gonna look it up because now I'm just
curious because that actually makes sense because of just how
many pumpkins there were, which again that's I get it.
It's it's it's for Halloween. But yeah, pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom.
You are right, They've got over a thousand bright orange
pumpkins all over the park. So because of that, I'm
just you know, give me, give me the fall the
fall weather. But hey, Sonny, and in the seventies is
(11:27):
also something that'd be pretty foolish to complain about, especially
when it was a week ago that we had a
crazy flash flooding that really, I mean, if you remember,
and I'm sure a lot of you have seen the
pictures and videos now, but the completely that road, the
completely collapsed. That was just that was saying to see
so again, good to be a beautiful day and we'll
(11:47):
get you caught up throughout the morning on what you need.
All right, So if you want to join us on
the show and be a part of it, contribute, you
can do it. You can do that on the iHeartRadio
app courtesy of the Talk back Line featured by Alex R.
White PLLC Distracted Driver dot Com. Whatever you've got, feel
free to fire away. You'll get thirty seconds to share
whatever it is that you want and then of course
we will share some of those with our listeners throughout
(12:10):
the show. Again, it is the talkback Line powered by
Alex ryplcsu Distracted Driver dot coms. A distracted driver at
some point could turn your day upside down in more
ways than one. And that's a scary thing. And there's
a lot of questions you're asking as soon as it happens.
You're panic because again that's not something you would ever expect.
One of those questions is going to be who can
I learn, Who can I turn to? Who can I trust?
(12:31):
When it comes to a personal injury attorney? That's going
to fight for me, advocate for me. Somebody that is
going to be dedicated to me throughout the process, not
somebody that wants to give the illusion that they're local,
but they're actually not. Alex White and his team they
are here in this community. You see them everywhere. Their
presence is felt in the community, and they'll be there
(12:52):
for you throughout that process. Again, it's a scary process.
You need somebody you can trust, You need somebody that's
going to do right by you, and that's what they
can do for you. Also, if they don't win your case,
you don't pay them any You don't pay them anything.
So that speaks to just how much they believe they
can fight for you and get those results. Again, it
is Alex Rwhite, PLLC, Sudistractor driver dot Com. So I'm
(13:13):
looking here at the top twenty five of the Apee
Pole just because I other than seeing that Louisville was
ranked where they were, and of course seeing Kentucky being
just ahead of him, and then I guess the other
observation that I made was the ACC having just three
teams in the top twenty five, and one of those
(13:34):
is number twenty five, North Carolina again, not trying to
act as if Louisville fans because I'm one of you.
I'm as excited as anybody just to see Louisville there,
because it's a reminder that we're off to a quick start.
Pat Kelsey ahead a schedule, and a real reminder that
anybody that was claiming it takes years to clean something
(13:55):
up or to build something or just to you know,
have some success, they were all liars because he's got
a team that in its second season, I mean, they're
ranked in the top eleven, and a lot of people
think that they are better than that, meaning they think
that they would be closer. And that is one thing
that is very noticeable now that I'm giving it some
thought here that those who cover college hoops like year round,
(14:18):
the John Fantas, the Jeff Goodman's, the Gary parrish Is,
Jeff Borzello, John Rostein, I feel like I'm giving you
guys the Mount Rushmore here. But those who are just
that's what they do. They cover college hoops. Specifically, they
have Louisville Kentucky both more so close to the top
five and the top five of the eight peep pole.
(14:40):
To me, it just seems like a very safe selection. Purdue, Houston, Florida, Yukon,
Saint John's. I mean, I think you could make the
case that there's teams within the six through I don't
know twelve that you could make the case or top
five teams ahead of those. Obviously Florida's coming off of
of a hell of a run. Yukon, I mean that
(15:04):
they they just now broke their two year streak of
winning national championships. Houston's always going to be good, that's
for sure. And then Purdue I want to be I
want to I want to yell at the clouds about Purdue,
and I'm sure John Alden does as well, because that's
the rival of his Hoosiers. But I kind of understand it.
They win a lot of games. They're more often than
not going to be a team that is maybe not
(15:25):
number one throughout the year. That's that's that's hard to expect.
But I mean, they're always good and seems like I
mean the fact that big ten preseason player there's certainly
going to be a first team All American preseason the
guard for for Indiana, what's his name, Braden Braden Smith? Yeah,
I mean he could player, but like I don't know.
He's He's another reminder that for some reason, the visual
(15:46):
produced roster never looks scary, but they win a lot
of basketball.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
COMPU has a very old school style roster that somehow
works for him, but it's because Matt Paynter. He has
a system and it's he's definitely had him rolling for
the last year.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
I think you could make the case that Matt Painter
maybe the coach that has been able to really stick
with what he's always done, always what he's always been
about as far as roster building, roster continuity throughout the
changes that have been substantial college in college basketball. He's
stuck with what he's done forever and it still works.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
He's like Davo Swinny, but not as big of a
a hole I guess about him.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
I mean he's I mean, he's not resistant like Davo
it seems, but he just he knows what he works
for him and he's I mean, he's had rosters that
have gotten really good seeds. Some of those teams actually
end up losing early in the tournament. But he's had
rosters that most wouldn't Most coaches, probably on paper ahead
of time, wouldn't think much of as far as the
personnel the pieces, but they win a lot of ball games.
(16:40):
It works, all right, Let's get to a time quick
time out. We've got Roory on Neild NBC News set
to join us coming up here in just a few minutes.
But right now, let's get another update on traffic and
weather on News Radio eight forty whas. It's coffee and
company with you here on News Radio eight forty whas
we are Field, but Thornton's appreciate you hanging out with
us here on a Tuesday morning. We all so appreciate
(17:00):
Rory O. Neil of NBC News who joins us. Rory,
I want to get to the latest on the government shutdown,
but I also would like to start with the triumphant
trip that Trump has made, of course here, and just
the overall situation where it feels like, and I could
be wrong here, that this is maybe one of the
biggest wins for him in either presidency, as far as
just it being nearly impossible not to acknowledge this is
(17:22):
a great thing, that there's steps and real progress here
as far as peace in the Middle East.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Right, an incredible trip, the president getting back to the
White House, overnight. Just that travel schedule, by the way,
just it was non stop going or air Force one
is going to be getting more arrest, I think to
the President. But it is a remarkable accomplishment that we've
seen unfold down. But look, there are still an awful
lot of questions going forward. But no one else has
(17:48):
gotten us to this phase one before. So it a
lot of that costious optimism out there.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Yeah, and I think that was understandably. I believe the
best way to describe it in the last week or
so is just that it looks if things were headed
in the right direction, but there was that cautious optimism
when it comes to just I guess the next big hurdle,
what does that believe to be? As far as just
continued progress here.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Well, I think that in the short term we still
need to have more of those the human remains turned over.
I think about four the bodies have been turned over
so far. There are about sixteen others. So we want
to make sure that process is completed. You know, we
didn't really hear you know, we heard a lot from
Israel yesterday and so many Israeli officials and Benjamin Netanyahu
in the big speech at the Kannestant, and we heard
(18:31):
from other Arab leaders as well. We hadn't really heard
much from Hamas at this point, and the whole idea
of them disarming, the whole idea of getting Israel to
recognize a Palestinian state. Net Yawhu has said he's not
going to do that, but I would say short term,
let's complete the deal with getting the body's returned and
then getting to the issues of disarming Hamas and then
(18:53):
getting Israel to recognize the state. Those are two very
big hurdles to try to clear.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Roory on neilvan Bee news our guest joining a Serra
News Radio eight forty whas the government shut down continues
and it does not look as if there's any end
in sight. Also, there's a historic wave of retirements that
is going to put a big strain on the government.
What can you tell us about that?
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Yeah, we've got to remember back in those days, right
earlier this year, when Elon Musk said, hey, you know,
you know you can retire now if you promise, you know,
to cut you so that we can cut your job
for the year ahead.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
You could get you off the books essentially, right, you
a buy out now?
Speaker 5 (19:29):
Right, let's do it now in March, and you can
have the summer off even and then your retirement is
official October first. Well, of course, all that's coinciding with
the government shutdown. They say that there's central personnel and
they're working around it. But there's still about one hundred
and fifty five thousand federal workers retiring or you know,
leaving their jobs taking advantage of these deals, and it's
(19:49):
just a lot for the Office of Personnel Management to
try to process here. It's not that big of an agency,
and it's a bit of a brain drain as well.
You know, a lot of people leaving, you know, with
that twenty to thirty year level of experience, and you know,
yet they're the most expensive employees, but that your most
experienced ones as well.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
It seems like the this week will be a big
one as far as it becoming more of a reality
to those that are going to be without a paycheck
until the government shutdown comes to an end. But I
still believe it's to me, it still seems like the
noise in regards to this, as far as the impact
is still in regards to air travel, Are we seeing
any any added issues there? It seems as it's it
seems as if it's been a pretty pretty steady issues
(20:31):
this point as far as just something they're able to monitor,
not to where it's gotten it's gotten crazy out of
hand just yet. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
Well it's funny because I was following up on the
story about the retirees and like, wait, so the Office
of Personnel Management is considered essential and they know how
many people are refurloughing really you know a few of
the National Parks people of it, because it seems to
your point of how come I'm not feeling this more? Well,
a lot of these agencies have been deemed as essential.
(20:59):
So they're still going. You know, I'm down here in Florida.
They're still building the next generation rocket and you're like,
really that's essential as well, you know, because we're trying
to compete with China, so that's essential. So they're still
going to work and getting paid. Oh right, I mean,
I guess, but yeah, so I think when we say shutdown,
we should be putting that in the air quotes these days.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Now, I think you're right. I guess what is essential
is really just it's it's selective, and there's certain things
they're prioritizing at this point that they may surprise folks.
The rory is always, we appreciate your time. Enjoy the
rest of your day, my friend. We'll talk tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
Thanks Nick.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
That's Roory on Neil of NBC News. Also, if you
are somebody that is going to be without pay until
the government shutdown comes to an end, I mean, wouldn't
you want to be furlough to where? I mean? Maybe
that would be the Maybe the downside of that is
that it could be an eye opener that you're not
as essential and and and maybe you're not as needed
as you previously were believed to be. I don't know,
(21:53):
but all I know is that if I'm not getting paid,
I'd prefer not to be working. But anyways, hopefully they
can this resolve sooner rather than later. But as of now,
it just doesn't seem like there's really any end in sight.
But maybe with the recent news as far as piece
in the Middle East and what that has done, as
far as just the reaction from a lot of folks
(22:14):
at least taking a brief break to just acknowledge something
good happening, and many seemingly having a tough time not
acknowledging that the Trump administration deserves some credit for this
entire situation, not to say they're solely responsible, but clearly
made it happen. Maybe that means that we could get
along and get this government shut down and we'll see.
All right, We've got traving weather updates on the way.
(22:36):
Also a sports update coming your way with Scott Fitzgerald
right here on news Radio eight forty whas
