Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Monday morning, and welcome in.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
It is coffee and company, fueled by Thornton's here on
news radio eight forty whas Kentucky and it's morning News.
Hopefully you had yourselves a good weekend. It is October
the twentieth, and it feels like it feels like fall.
Forty three degrees Scott Fitzgerald, that's what it's telling me
right now. I didn't feel that cold, but I wasn't
really outside very long. It was a very brief outdoor
(00:23):
experience for me. I opened the garage and then I
got in my car, and then really once I was
in the garage here at our wonderful studios at four
Street Live, I mean we're covered, so I guess I
didn't feel but forty three degrees forty five, I guess,
depending where you're looking right now, that's cold.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Yeah, fols here, Paul's here.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
We were talking about that in really nice cozy dinner
last night, and you know, and just settled in.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Football was on and the gloom because of the rain
all that. Yeah, it was great.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
It felt awesome. Dude, looked like fall. Looks like fall,
feels like fall, and I will certainly take it. But absolutely,
we'll get you caught up on the forecast for the
rest of the day. Of course, this we'll have Matt
Melosovich with updates throughout the morning. Also, we'll get you
caught up on how the roadways are going to get
started here on a Monday.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So far, so good.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Let's hope that that continues and lots of react to
from the weekend. We'll certainly do that, but I think
going back to Friday night would be a good way
to start, as that was a reminder that for reasons
I'm sure, and I'm sure there are many, but it
doesn't really matter. You've got a football coach, if you're
a Louisville fan, that just seems to really be made
(01:27):
for those moments. And that was well established prior to
Friday night. And I wasn't of the belief that Louisville
was going to be completely shell shocked and just get
run off the field by the number two team in
the country. But I felt like they could play really
well and still lose because of how good Miami was,
and it didn't matter Louisville. I mean, they were seemingly
(01:48):
the better team from start to finish. If those two
teams play ten times. Who knows how many wins go
which way, but it didn't matter just that night, and
really a win that changes how I think every Louisville
fan is going to view this season.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
It was little like cleats, That's what it was.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
No, it was and all the rock stars were out
for that game, you know, Michael Irvan was in the
house for Miami. Everybody thought that Miami was just gonna
go out there and win this game. In fact, I
texted my son after the second touchdown, I said, wow,
exclamation point. He texted me back and said, it's early,
way early. And I think that was all of Louisville
fans sure expectations, you know, going on. But as the
night progressed, it was clear that Louisville had something going on.
(02:30):
There was something cooking.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Well.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Defensively, they were able to and you wouldn't if you
only watched Miami in that game. I mean, I'm not
really sure what you would assume their identity is, but
they they are really good at running the ball. They
have one of the best running backs in the country,
and Louisville was able to limit that to where it
wasn't a factor in any way.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Louisville.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
By the way, I think they're one of very few
teams that has not giving up a single rush of
more than twenty yards. Wow, Ron English needed to deliver
this year, and his group's been phenomen I mean, the
defensive backs looked looked ungodly.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
I mean it was it was insane. It wasn't.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
And by the way, some of the interceptions were bad
passes by by Carson Beck, who had himself an awful
night by the way, five interceptions. Really he was bailed
out by at roughing the passer call late, But some
of those plays were just great plays made on the
ball with dudes who look like they've got an NFL future.
And again it's not really an outlier because they played
well all year. But anyway, stopping the run it changed
how Miami was going to call that game. They couldn't
(03:27):
get the run game established, so they had to rely
a little more on Carson Beck making plays, and Louisville
was able to make him uncomfortable and they did enough.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
They did enough to win.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
And you remember the sound bite we played from Carson
Beck on Friday where he anowledged he knew he was
going up against and you pointed out that that was
a legitimate claim my car. That wasn't just player speak.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
That was a legitimate collier.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
And with Louisville again there they had played Pitt, they
played Virginia. Other than that, it was opponents that I'm
sure when it comes to the film, they're still going
to watch it, but you really don't know what to
make of it because of just the difference in competition.
But I think the past just club Luban is a
guy that is that one of the He's one of
those dudes that will be here probably, I don't know.
I think I don't know much eligibility has left, but
(04:06):
really really good and I think he's only here one year,
so it's gonna be tough to kind of, you know,
think back to how fondly he'll be remembered. But I
think right now you've got a guy that portal as
far as what you expected, probably hoped he could help
you out, but I don't think anybody expeted him to
be as good as he's been. And then you've also
got a receiver who I believe is this is a
(04:27):
bold claim to make, but I'm not really sure it's
out of line. When you look at the numbers. Chris
Bell is playing like the best Louisville football player since
Lamar Jackson. He's I mean, he was special when it
comes to just and he's been special his three straight games.
First time in Louisville history. I think it's for over
one hundred three straight games of one hundred and twenty
yards or more. Nobody's ever done that before. And just
(04:48):
the visual, I mean, it looks like you've got Lebron
James playing basketball at times because he's just so big
out there, but yet nobody can catch him. I mean,
he turned the Jets on on two of his touchdowns
to where it looked like he was jogging. We're talking
Miami speed out there. That just he parted them and
took it right to the end zone. So again, Jeff Brohm,
he wins in those games. It's it's really unheard of
(05:10):
to be that good in those moments so consistently, and
it's nice to have a guy that can do that
because you want to win every game you play, but
the wins that have a real currency that can flip things,
that can put you in the conversation to maybe having
a special season. And it I mean, I feel like
Louisville season really just started. It's not because they finally
won a big game. It's more so just because of
(05:32):
the way scheduling set up two buys in the first
five games, which is just weird. But now they're back
in the top twenty, and let's hope that the annual
dud game after the big win doesn't happen, and you
got a good opponent coming to town to avoid that
because Boston.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
College is really really bad.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Well, and it feels good to be talking about somebody
other than Clemson in the ACC because you have Georgia
Tech at the top.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Now you Duke's of.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Power, so it just Virginia still und right, So it
just feels good not always talking about Clemson. It's nice.
The ACC is wide open heading into this weekend.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
And we'll also talk Kentucky because what a what a
fight they had a game that honestly it is it is.
It's head scratching to see that they didn't win if
you just look at the numbers, I mean, unheard of
to lose a game like that whenever you've got such
an advantage and so many very important statistical categories. So yeah, Anyways,
we got a lot to get to this morning, and
(06:26):
we'll talk a lot of sports this morning, a lot.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
You've got a busy morning.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
With a lot prest season baseball.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
We got a hockey late when last night for racing Louisville.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
It's coming down to the wire for them.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Low City's back home this weekend. We got state champions
to talk about state championship played to talk about, dude,
I mean, but definitely you're right. The a story was
the Louisville Cardinals we talked about on Saturday. That was
the one everybody was talking about.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
So good stuff. So what happened? All right?
Speaker 2 (06:50):
We will have a busy morning for you to stick around.
We'll get started here with a first update from US
as far as trafficking weather, So don't go anywhere. It
is coffee and Company and we're feel about Thornton's right
here on news Radio eight forty whas.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
It is on Monday morning here at news Radio eight
forty whas Coffee and Company with you, and we are
fueled by Thornton's. Keep Thornton's in mind as you get
your Monday started. I mean, you can keep them in
mind anytime. But they can certainly help you get your
day started right now, you can take advantage of a
good offer to get a cup of coffee and a
donut for just three bucks. Also a lot of good
breakfast options. Obviously, I love the I say obviously as
(07:25):
everybody knows it. If not, i'll tell you, but I
talk about it quite a bit. It's the sausage, egg
and cheese croisant, one of the best breakfast sandwiches you'll find.
So that's my favorite. But again, you've got plenty to
choose from. I've yet to talk to anybody who's tried
the Pumpkin Spice fizz Freeze, which the fizz Freeze is
Thornton's version of a slushy, and I don't think it's
(07:47):
for me, but I might get one for my kid
just to see if they'll drink it. They probably will,
I can't imagine they would. I mean any it's if
it's a candy like candy like drink, they'll probably think
it's great. But I just I don't know everybody knows.
I'll of Thornton's. But just these two things don't seem
to job. If I gave you the option to have
a pumpkin spice. If I brought you a pumpkin spice
(08:07):
fizz freeze, John, would you would you? Would you respectfully
decline or would you give it a shot?
Speaker 1 (08:12):
I hate to admit that I probably would.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
But if it was maybe like a coffee, I'd try it,
but maybe not so much a fizz freeze.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yeah, like pumpkins spice. I mean, I feel like this
is this is certain, that's what they do it. Thorntons
is real creative here. I feel like most pumpkin spice
items are not of you know, slushyet type.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Yeah. I think that might be the issue there.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yeah, but if you have tried it, let let me know,
because I would love to hear, uh, love to hear
what it's like. Maybe I'll try at one point, because again,
it's not going to be around forever. And if there
is ever a time where pumpkin spice is uh, is
you know in the spotlight, it's right now, pumpkin spice.
It's it's pumpkin spice. It's time, deshine as we are
now just eleven days away from it from Halloween and
of course November just uh you know, just just around
(08:53):
the corner, all right, you guys would like to take
us with you wherever you go on a Monday morning,
you can do that. You can listen live at whas
dot com. I'm also listen live on the iHeartRadio app.
And on the iHeart Radio app, we have the talkback
feature powered by Alex Rwhite Pllcseudistracted Driver dot com. You
can just click that microphone button when you're listening on
the app and then you can share with us whatever
it is you'd like. You get thirty seconds, and I
(09:16):
always say questions, complaints, compliments, insults, whatever you've got, fire away.
All right, So so far right now, and again things
can always change. You've got a smooth start when it
comes to traffic. And again Bobby Ellis will keep us
updated throughout the morning. Something we are certainly going to
discuss here and there throughout the morning, and we'll do
it in about twenty five minutes with Rody O'Neil of
(09:37):
NBC News.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
That is this jewel heist.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
It's like something out of a movie where somehow, some
way thieves we're able to get in and take something
that was probably as prioritized as anything when it comes
to just making sure you keep it protected it, but
it's a brazen heist which targeted France's priceless Crown jewels.
So in Paris there are Crown jewels that, again you
(10:02):
would assume are protected like nothing else. Yet we've got
thieves that were able to pull it off. They'll probably
get caught. That's usually how these things work out. But
I will admit I am I'm very interested. I get
very hooked on certain heists, right because it's one thing
to like go rob somebody.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
I mean, you should never do that.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
But obviously there's different ways to be a thief. There's
different ways to steal. But an elaborate plan to pull
off a heist, you know, stuff you see in movies
that fascinates me. Not that I condone it, and more
often than not, you get caught. But we'll talk about
that because it's certainly going to continue to be I think,
a big story across the globe and something I wasn't anticipating.
I'm out driving with the family on Saturday, just having
(10:43):
a nice fall Saturday afternoon, and I drove into I
guess what was one of the I guess there were
a few of them, maybe a lot of them. I
don't really know the No Kings protests and I drove
through one, not meaning like.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
I drove through people, but it was it was something.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
We'll talk about that as well right here on news
Radiate forty whas.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Thank you very much, John Shannon. It is five thirty
six here at.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
News Radio eight forty whas coffee in company with you,
and we are fueled by Thornton's Dick Coffee. That's me
John all alongside today.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
John. Have you been on a cruise before. I've never
been on a cruise. I'm not opposed to it though.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Okay, so I'm not opposed to it as if I'm
anti cruise or I just assume that anybody who likes cruises,
they just you know, I don't get I mean, I
get it. I can see how it would be a
lot of fun. I've talked about this before. I know
that I would be okay if I went on a cruise.
I'm not worried that we would sink or that there
would be any kind of disaster.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
It's just I would be scared.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I fear being on water where I can't see land,
and you know, the lead up to it, and just
the worry and the anxiousness while I was there, would
make it to where I would not enjoy it as
much as as I would other vacations, other types of
trips that I do when it comes to just taking
some time off. So again, it's not like I'm anti
cruise by any means, but obviously it's just not something
(12:04):
I'll probably ever do. And that's okay. I don't have
any fomo. But to see the numbers here, as you
heard Roy O'Neil mention there in John's news update, twenty
one point seven million Americans projected to be on a
cruise ship at some point this year. So the cruise
industry is booming. And John Shannon, you are a big
(12:25):
cruise guy, know is that fair to say?
Speaker 5 (12:27):
I mean, I mean, we do one cruise a year,
but we've been doing it since twenty sixteen.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah, I would say, I mean, if you make it
to where you go on a cruise once a year,
I'd say to.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Me, you're a big cruise guy. I'm not sure what
the standard is, but.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
You know, the funny thing is you're talking about not
being able to see land. A lot of these cruises
because of where they sail in the Caribbean. You can
see land.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
What about at night when I go outside at night, No,
but you star it's a nightmare fuel for me, buddy.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
But I know with mine.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
With unless we're on the pool deck for like a concert,
we're really not outside. Everything is inside because the way
the are that we are, it's like got this big
indoor promenade area.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
We all call it a mall.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
It looks like a two It looks like a two
story mall or a mall inside it's all open air inside,
like a like a multi story mall, and that's where
a lot of the stuff happens in there.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
So sixty five percent of passengers are fifty five or older,
but also, of course.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
There's families that take younger.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
I mean, you can you can really find whatever you
want on a cruise, right like you can, And I
guess you've probably got to try somehow to see what
this fits you as far as different cruise lines, cruise
ships and whatnot. But I mean, that's one thing when
it comes to just the folks who go on a cruise,
it seems as if it's really important to make sure
you find one. That is, if you're not necessarily looking
for a super kid friendly one, then you want to.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Avoid it or vice versa.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
But like those who are most people probably know where
to go to find what they like. As far as
the different types of cruises.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
Yeah, I mean you got a travel agent. The internet
is out there. I mean if you're if you're not,
if you don't have kids and you don't want to
be around kids, then a Disney cruise is not for you. You
might want to look more like at Virgin Atlantic.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
The kids would love it.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
I tell you what it's like Disneyland to float.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
But I would say a lot of kids, there's a
lot of things my kids would love that sound like
well to me, Yeah, I.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
Totally understand that. I'd say for anybody that hasn't done
a cruise, maybe do like a quick three day cruise
just to kind of get your feet under it where
you might make one stop, you go out, you make
one stop and you come back in, and just to
just to get a feel for it, because it's like
for the ninety nine percent of the time, it's like
you and I sitting right here in this studio. As
far as stability and everything, if you know, and there
(14:32):
are people to get motion sickness, because there is some
motion to the boat. You see them walking around on
the cruise, they're the ones that have the little dot
behind their ear. That's the drama. Mean, but a lot
of what And Buddy, my best friend out in Texas
who spent many years in the Navy, which is funny
because there's landlocked West Texas and he spent the Navy, says, really,
what seasickness is is your inability to see the horizon.
So if you go out on the deck and kind
(14:53):
of look out towards the horizon and on the look
just get out in the air, that will go away.
But you want to tell you what, some of the
prettiest sunsets I've ever seen have been out on the
on the Caribbean. I believe the Atlantic as it's going
down as we're sailing.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
I believe it.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I made progress as far as uh, tackling my fear
this summer.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Do you know what I did?
Speaker 5 (15:11):
What'd you do?
Speaker 2 (15:12):
I did a river cruise on the bell of Louisville. No,
that was that was as dangerous as I get, as
far as being as far as being on the water. Uh,
But no, I I I do think that it appears
to be. And everybody's situation is different, but it appears
to be. It gets depending upon what you what you were,
which cruise you try to go on to where it's
a really it's a real affordable thing compared to some
other yes week, you know, if you're if you're gonna
(15:33):
go to the beach for a week, you're gonna pay
for a condo. You're gonna pay for dinner every night,
you're gonna pay for groceries. You're gonna pay to fly there,
if you choose to do that to wear a cruise, Yeah,
there's clearly a cost associated, and you're gonna have to
pay uh premium if you're gonna be boozing, which I
certainly would if I was going to be on a cruise. Uh,
but it's still probably all adds up to be a
pretty good deal compared to other vacations, right.
Speaker 5 (15:54):
It does because a lot of it's all inclusive, a
lot with the food. Sometimes you get all inclusive drink packages,
whether it's your coffees and tea beverages like that or
your adult drinks. The other nice thing too is a
lot of the places, like with ours, they let you
pay it off over time, so you can run a
down payment on it, say like you want to go
six months from now. You put a down payment on
it now, and you can pay it off until you
got until a month before you cruise to get it
(16:16):
paid off. So there's also that aspect and not having
to have all of the money right now to go
on vacation.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
It says here that nine to ten passengers rate their
experience as good.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Or very good.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
So cruise cruises combined value, variety and convenience. One trip,
multiple destinations, no hotel hopping, so yeah, convenience price that
goes a long way when it comes to people planning
their other vacation time. So when's your cruise coming up?
Speaker 5 (16:39):
It's coming up the end of February.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
John goes to an eighties themed cruise annually, now right, Yes,
we got to revisit that conversation at some point.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Good stuff.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Thanks, all right, let's get to a quick time out.
We've got trafficking weather updates on the way. We've also
got Roordy on Neil of NBC News set to join
us in just a few minutes, So stick around right
here on News Radio eight forty whas.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
Good Monday morning, Kentucky, Ina.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
It is Kentuckyana's Morning news here on news Radio eight
forty whas coffee and company with you, and we are
fueled by Thornton's and we are now joined by Rory O'Neill.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Of NBC News.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Rory, we've got ourselves a good old fast, a good
old fashioned jewel heist that is certainly getting a lot
of attention across the globe. What can you tell us
as far as what these thieves made off with? And
I guess what's what we know?
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Yeah, all of this happened at the Louver in Paris
on Sunday morning. The museum was open to the public
had been open for less than an hour when these thieves,
using a truck with a ladder on it, essentially got
up to the second floor, cut their way in and
managed to make off with crowns and diadems that are
actually priceless. The real concern is that they're not going
(17:46):
to try to sell these items as is, instead that
they'll be broken down for their parts and then sold off.
Keep in mind there's one diadem that once belonged to
the Empress Eugenia, the wife of Napoleon. The third that
one item has two thousand diamonds on it.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
So you answer the next question, which was when someone
steals this type this type of an item, I mean
it the value is I mean, it's the likelihood of
you being able to sell it to somebody in them
not know that it's clearly maybe the most wanted stolen
item on the planet. Like it just seems like it
just isn't really worth it. But as you mentioned, they've
got a way to where they can they can utilize
(18:25):
it and still make a ton of money.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
I'm sure.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
Well, right, they can take out individual stones, they can
melt down the gold that was used for these pieces
and then sell it as is. So yeah, there are
a lot of different ways for them to fence this
stuff essentially, and that's their real concern. Look, these are
France's crown jewels, and you know, obviously, as I said, priceless,
really eight items stolen in all, including an emerald and
(18:49):
diamond necklace that Napoleon gave to his wife, Empress Mary Louise.
You know, they're remarkable items if you've seen the photographs.
Oh yeah, and clearly you know these people knew what
they were doing. The whole heightst took just seven minutes.
The four guys cut their way in, sort of scared
off the security guards at the scene, cut open the cases,
(19:10):
were gone in a matter of minutes, getting away on
scooters as they fled the scene, so they'd sort of
vanished into the night. But again most of the experts
say they really only got about forty eight hours in
order to track this tough down. This is also revealing,
by the way, some pretty incredible security failure really at
the louver where they say about a third of the
(19:30):
lover has no security cameras at all.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Yeah, I saw that. That is I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
If if that's just the way it's always been and
they assume they haven't needed it, but clearly somebody was
able to see a vulnerable a spot that was vulnerable,
and they took advantage. And it makes total sense that
investigators were quick to realize this is probably an organized
crime operation and certainly not amateurs. But I don't know,
maybe an amateur could have pulled it off. Yeah, that
just doesn't make any sense. I don't think anybody would
have expected something with that type of value being not
(19:59):
secure much more much more strictly well.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
Right, you know, and that's just one of the there
are so many people in there who would think that
you would have a daytime robbery, you know, on a
Sunday morning, you know, while the crowds are right out
of about the museum, right out of Yeah, it really is.
And while all this is happening, you know, they didn't
try to sneak in at two am, you know, nine
thirty in a Sunday morning. The place is filled with tourists.
(20:24):
You know, it is the most visited museum in the world,
and you would just assume that with all that foot traffic,
things would be safe.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
One more for you, Roy, when it comes to the
peace in the Middle East, is that now in question?
Following these clashes we had in Gaza over the weekend, pretty.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
Rough day yesterday, some Hamas members attacked in Israeli tank
and killed two soldiers and that then triggered a response
by Israel that included multiple strikes, killing what we believe
were dozens of Palestinians. And so this back and forth
is continuing and rather a tenuous ceasefire that they both
try to argue is still in effect. You know, they

even temporarily suspended some of the relief operations they got

try to hold this thing together as they try to
move on to phase two, which would get to the
rebuilding of Kaiza.
