feature presented by Alex White PLLC SU Distracted Driver dot Com. Questions, complaints, compliments, insults,
(00:27):
whatever you've got, feel free to send them our way.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
All right.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
So the government shut down, of course, has been has
been a big talking point for obvious reasons. But it
still seems as if we're in the all right, let's
see what becomes maybe the breaking point. But maybe that's
foolish to say, because a breaking point for citizens those
that really start to feel in a major way how
(00:55):
a government shut down can impact their livelihood. They have
no control, right so it's completely out.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Of their control.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
It's it's a helpless feeling, and sometimes you can look
at something and maybe find peace knowing, hey, it's gonna
do it, it's gonna do Things are gonna play out
the way they're gonna play out, and I have no
impact on that, So why get why get caught up
in worrying about it? I try to live life with
that in mind constantly, just because it's it's it's the truth, right.
(01:27):
Letting something impact you that you have no control over
it's human nature, and there's certain there's certain instances where
that will never not be There's certain instances we'll never
not be able to let it impact you. Right, Like
when life happens and there's a tragic situation, Yeah, you
have no control, and men it to act as if
it's gonna, you know, not impact you, that's foolish. But
when it comes to certain things that you know, you
(01:47):
just simply can get distracted away from, and sometimes that's good.
But this, even if you're trying to just get to
come to grips that hey, it's gonna do what it's
gonna do. They're going to get it worked out at
some point. I have no I have no control, So
let's just try not to stress. Again, I think that's
a lot harder to do. It's easier said than done,
(02:09):
because when you start to just worry about maybe this
last two months, maybe this last three months, and the unknown,
the fear of just not knowing and having no control,
that's that's got to be a level of anxiety for
folks that is tough. So again, WOKY are partners.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
They have a detailed list of all.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
The different places here in the in the area that
you can get help if you're going to be losing
your benefits, and with that you'll end up knowing that hey,
November first, when when snap benefits come to a halt,
you no longer have any way of of of getting
a meal for you or your family, whatever it may be.
There's a lot of resources here in Louisville breakfast, some
(02:53):
with breakfast and lunch, some that are just doing dinner,
some just doing lunch. But again, a great detailed list
over at WOKY if you guys want to check it out.
So again, it's been this way for a couple of weeks,
just kind of the wait and see. Well, you know,
I've been able to think of it, maybe fifteen percent
of you know, fifteen percent of my day am I
(03:15):
aware and thinking about this shutdown and what the impact
has been for me and maybe others. And then there's
others that maybe they felt it every single day, like
if you've been like I saw two different friends on
Facebook yesterday. One is somebody that I'm not necessarily friends with,
but just somebody that is that somehow they ended up
on my on my page, and and another was somebody
that I do know, and they were expressed. One was
(03:35):
expressing concerns for themselves and frustrations for themselves. The other
was expressing it be on behalf of the family because
their spouse is is furloughed, and that's obviously something that
you know, maybe you could get some maybe you could
find a way to take advantage of getting some time
off and what I mean finding a silver lining, right
But I would imagine if you've been furloughed for many weeks,
(03:59):
the enjoyment of the time off may have faded, and
the worry about when it's going to end and when
you're going to eventually get your back pay and all
that kind of stuff that starts to probably probably take over.
So no end in sight right now, But maybe maybe
they're working behind the scenes and and something will change.
But again, twenty five lawsuit. Twenty five states have filed
(04:20):
lawsuits demanding that there'd be funds released for situations like this.
So it's only going to get worse. Let's just hope
it's not.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Too bad.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
I mean, I say that well aware that I'm I'm
I'm fortunate to not have really had any real impact
just yet.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
But that's just me.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I'm sure there's In fact, I know there's many others
that have been ready for this to come to an
end long ago.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
All right, let's get to a quick time out.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
We've got traffic and weather updates on the way, and
I want to talk about Mark Pope on the other side.
He did something yesterday in Lexington that just reminded me
of the reaction when his got brought up as the
potential replacement for John Caliperry and many many fans clearly
(05:07):
wrong and they would admit that I'm not doing this
to dunk on the rival and say, hey, you can't
enjoy him now you didn't want him anyway, But it
is wild how things turn out. So we'll get to
that in a lot more right here on News Radio
eight forty whas so yesterday. There were two different things
that took me back to March of twenty twenty twenty three,
(05:28):
when Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey were hired. But we'll
start with John Caliperry, the former Kentucky coach. He said
something after their exhibition game against Memphis, quote, everywhere I left,
they were mad, except Kentucky they were happy. He finally
realizes that they wanted him gone, and it seems like
(05:49):
he may have accepted that and maybe understands it because
it really was the best case scenario for both sides
at that time. He found the new gig that's going
to pay him a lot of money, a good job,
certainly not Kentucky. And then Kentucky was able to I
mean Barnhart specifically was able to benefit from not having
to pay Cal any money at all, where he had
a lifetime contract, where Cal could have kept losing to
(06:10):
teams like Oakland and Saint Peter's and financially it still
would have been a tough thing to do to get
rid of him. A lifetime contract, of course, that puts
you on the hook for a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
So there was that.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
And then Mark Pope yesterday he had what I guess
is like a media media day for the media where
they had a practice maybe it was more of a workout,
and they invited all the local media that covers the
program in Lexington and I guess throughout the state to
come and.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Bring their families.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
And I don't think he did that so that the
media would kiss his rear end. And you know, excuse me,
I'm not And by the way, I'm not getting emotional
talking about Mark Pope. I got something in my throat.
It's not that, trust me. But anyways, I just think
he knows that that would go a long way. They're
a fan base with a lot of their media members
being fans too, and that's okay, That's just that's how
(06:59):
things are now. I'm one of those people, always have been,
and I feel like I was somebody that always advocated
that you can be objective, be fair and also acknowledge
that you do have rooting interest to your fan But nonetheless,
he did it because he just knows that, like that's
the thing of Kentucky that would go a long way.
And he's done a lot of those things because he's
the perfect fit for that job. What it is, he
(07:24):
understands it. He won a championship there, and to me,
he has an element of what Jeff Bram is to Louisville.
And what I mean is that you could have the
most money in the world pay a coach ten times
what anybody else would pay them. Those two guys have
something that money couldn't buy as far as caring about
(07:46):
where they're coaching, where they're employed. It's a job, but
it's more than that because of the experience. Now we
all know you got to win right and fit. This
is also one of those things that's true. Fit really
only gets brought up when it didn't work right. If
you're winning games, you fit great. It's just reality of it.
And we don't oftentimes say that as much as we should.
(08:06):
Because Brian Kelly at LSU wasn't a good fit, would
have been a great fit if he won. Would have
loved his accent that he made up and got made
fun of if he won games. So fit always matters,
but it's not at all the same level of a
fact factor as winning. So if these guys don't win,
(08:27):
it's gonna be tough because it's winning your own and
you love them, you know, you can feel and appreciate
the fact that they care in a way about where
they're coaching than anybody else you could hire because and
it's not to say that the other coaches wouldn't try
and wouldn't wouldn't want to win and make the fan
base proud. But these are guys that if they had
other jobs, if they worked in a different industry, they
(08:49):
would never not have a deep care and appreciation to where.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
They went to school and where they played.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
So I think Louisville fans got to see the benefit
of that with really since day one in Kentucky fans,
the John Cali Perry Kentucky fan divorce was a fascinating
thing to follow from Afar and my partner John Alden
and I did that together on Sports Talk seven ninety
and it was a fascinating thing to see because it
was it was quite literally a divorce that needed to happen,
(09:18):
but they were just staying together for the kids. And
what I mean by that is Kentucky knew that Cal
is a good coach. It's just you know, it had
run its course, and he keeps slipping up and losing
the teams he shouldn't lose to in the tournament, and
he's stubborn, he won't adapt to the new world of
college hoops. And then he started to be so stubborn
that like he would do things he probably wouldn't ever
think of doing, but he wanted to almost stick it
(09:39):
to his own fan base. It was a wild thing
to see from Afar. And now Kentucky has a guy
that I think is going to be super successful.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
We'll see.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
I mean, it's only been there one year, but I
think he's a really good coach. But he's also somebody
that is the perfect fit. And I don't want to
forget this. You may have already mentioned it too, though.
The collective meltdown, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Happened with Big Blue Nation as they assumed they were
going to get somebody like a Billy Donovan or a
Dan Hurley just because they're Kentucky, and you do bring
in somebody like Mark Pope who's turned out for you
to see them the way that they that they reacted
in those first twenty four to forty eight hours before
they eventually began to buy in it, it was fascinating
(10:21):
to watch from Afar.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
It was an eye opener for them to realize that
they will go get a coach that has never won
a tournament game. That really his resume wasn't bad. But
here's the facts. Both things can be true. He's off
to a good start. I think he's going to be successful,
but also he had nothing on the resume that would
even sniff that job if he didn't play there, And
oftentimes that's a bad reason to hire somebody, but Barnhard,
at least right now. I think he's up for a
(10:44):
lot of criticism in a lot of ways, but that's
not one, at least right now, because so far it's
working out. But yes, they were just in disbelief that
they would hire somebody like that because it's Kentucky. And
I was in disbelief too, But also, you know who
the thought of them having Scott drew right now. I mean,
he probably would have won some games, but I mean
(11:08):
he was just the he's got a title under his
belt in we're Kentucky, so we have to have that
as a requirement, and that's I don't fault them for
looking at it that way. I think it is the
best job in college basketball. But you know, here's the reality.
If he won ten games last year, there wouldn't be
this this love affair. But it would still be true
that he's a good fit as far as understanding what
the job is. But most importantly, like anything, you got
to succeed, you got to win, and that will always
(11:31):
be the case. He's going to have to keep doing that.
But I think Kentucky fans are able to appreciate a
guy that is so far winning, but also he's he
has a level of appreciation making it about the program
the state more than himself and Cali Perry for better
for you not to criticize him for it, because it
worked for a while, but it was Cal's program and
now it's Kentucky's program again, and I can tell their
fans are eating it up all right, quick time out,
(11:52):
don't go anywhere trafficking. Weather updates on the way right
here on news radio forty whas. I've got no direct
data to back sub but I do feel like we
are off to a better start when it comes to
traffic then we had yesterday. But that doesn't mean we
haven't had some issues so far this morning. So right
now looks like there's a crash on I two sixty
(12:13):
four e's that's the Waterson near Breckenridge Lane. And right
now you've got the right lane and the right shoulder
blocked because of an accident, so just be advised again.
We're talking waters at eastbound Breckenridge Lane. Also a crash
on another crash that is eastbound on the watersin and
this is it looks like right near I seventy one.
(12:35):
So you've got the right lane and right shoulder block there,
so be advised. That could have you delayed this morning,
So stay safe and we'll have another update for you
coming up in just a few minutes with Bobby Ellis.
It's Kentucky, had this morning news coffee and company with you,
and we are fueled by Thornton's appreciates you hanging out
with us on this fine Thursday morning. So if you
are somebody that has either seen it for yourself or
you've heard people talking about it, and what I'm referring
(12:58):
to as the rumor, that is exactly that it's room
where it's not true. Walmart is not going to shut
down on November first because of fear of looting due
to snap benefits being cut off. One of those things
that I would imagine people assume. People would just say, yeah,
that's that, that can't be real, and it's not. But
some people just assume anything they see on the internet
(13:19):
is true, which is a scary thing, but it's but
clearly that is that, that's that's an issue. So here,
here's here's how the whole thing, here's how the whole
thing started. It was a TikTok video, one specific video
that ended up getting I think north of three million views,
and uh enough people shared it and clearly enough people
believed it to where you've got outlets like Yahoo doing
(13:43):
news updates to just let people know, hey, if you've
seen this, if you've heard it, it's it's not true. So,
as I've mentioned, we are fueled by Thornton's panic is
fueled by what people see on the Internet, including platforms
like TikTok. So they're not they're not locking their doors
on November first, and it's completely false. They're not closing stores,
not locking doors, and not switching to pick up only
that is what the rumor was, is that they would
(14:04):
they would still be open, but you couldn't go inside.
You would have to either order your groceries, have them delivered,
or pick them up. Because they were so fearful that
these snap benefits running out was going to lead to
people just looting in masses to where there would just
be no there be no way to stop it. So
another example of how things can spread like wildfire on
(14:26):
the internet, and all it takes is a small percentage.
I mean, look, a small percentage of of of three
million people is still a lot of people, right, So
if you did see that, just know that it is
a rumor and it's not sure. Also, Walmart they handle
a quarter of all Snap transactions in the United States,
so a shutdown would hurt them just as much as
(14:47):
it would hurt customers. So again, everything you see on TikTok,
not all.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Of it's real.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
I will say some of the some of it is
funny though when it's whenever, there are things created with
with trends on TikTok utilizing artificial intelligence to play a
joke on somebody that is that is playful. Of course,
that is what I found funny. I was telling John
about this. There's I guess there's an AI app. And
by the way, there's endless amounts of AI apps. So
there's a new one every day that I learned about.
(15:16):
And this one lets you take pictures of your home
and they will give you an image that includes certain
things in the image that you can send to somebody
to kind of spook them. And I'll give you an example.
There's one where you can send a picture of your
front door as you're looking at it, and then one
in your kitchen, and one in your living room, and
(15:37):
I think one in your bedroom. And you take these
these real pictures and they will put a homeless man
in the in the photo. And I think I have
the eye to know that that that looks like it's
AI created.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
But but maybe I'm wrong.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Maybe I'm giving myself too much credit as far as
having an eye for those kind of things. But people
make tiktoks go viral because it's funny. They share their
screenshot like they screen record the text exchange with their
wife or their husband. And the one I saw yesterday
was a woman who sent a picture to her husband
of her opening, of her looking out her front door
(16:15):
and there's a homeless man there and it looks real, and.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
She says, hey, do you know this guy? He says he.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Knew you, and he's fallen on hard times and asks
if he can come in and stay. And the first
response from the husband was, you're joking, right, who is that?
And then she showed that he tried to call, she
didn't answer, and then she wrote back and said, oh, sorry,
a mister call, I'm just catching up with your friend.
And it's this homeless man that is sitting on the
couch and to the eye, you would think, what is
(16:44):
my wife doing? And then he calls again, calls a
bunch of times, and finally she answers, and she explained it.
So I didn't hear it, but she explained that she
just tried to, you know, tried to act like, hey, no.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Big deal, Yeah, it's good.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
She's playing dumb as if she really believes that this
this is somebody that he knows. And then the last
one they show him sitting in the kitchen and the
she had to call him quickly because she realized he
was leaving work her husband because she he thought that
his wife had lost her mind and just let some
random stranger in her home that she believed. And I'm
(17:17):
sure you didn't think it was funny if you were
on the other end of that, But I mean that
it's so real that I get that people would believe it.
So maybe I'm maybe I'm a SICKO for thinking that's funny,
but I can't be you.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Know, it is funny, but like if my wife tried
to do that, I wouldn't believe her for a second
because she would never let home.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Yeah, I think I think as real as a picture
may seem, you would know if you are with somebody
that would.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Ever entertain that, you know what I mean. But yeah, yeah,
it's funny.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
There's also there's also one where there's also one that
I guess is more so for the husbands to do,
and it's of like a beautiful woman that you know
is dressed as if she's there to to hook up,
and so there's two different ways to do it in
which you can get the reaction you're going for. But yeah,
I think it's funny. But let's get to a quick
(18:07):
time out. We've got traffic of weather updates on the way,
and a lot more to get into, including a conversation
I want to revisit. Would you allow LMPD to have
security cameras at your house, not to where they can
look at it at any times.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
But they could just have it if they ever need it.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
If there's a crime to where those cameras may pick
up something that helps them solve a case. It can
only help. But I'm curious more than anything to see
how many people are gonna are gonna sign up. So
we'll talk about that. And we're right here our news
Radio eight forty whas. It is seven forty eight. Here
News Radio eight forty whas. Appreciate you hanging out with
us here on a Thursday morning. We don't have any
(18:43):
at least, well, I say that where we are I
can't actually tell, but I know we had seemingly over
twenty four hours consecutively with rain in some former fashion.
So hopefully that's just we're getting that out of the
way before we end up we end up obviously getting
to Halloween. It sounds like hoween the forecast is looking
pretty good. Gonna be chilly, of course, but I'd say
(19:03):
that's to be expected. But as long as it's not rainy,
I'd say that that's a win for folks that do
enjoy Halloween, you know, being out and about. So, yeah,
Halloween snuck up on me this year.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
I don't know what it is.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
We usually do some things that are just kind of
staples for us every year during Halloween, time, and we
didn't do some of those this year because of just
the schedule, Like we usually go to Hillcrest, we did that,
but we did it during the day and it was different.
It was it was fine, which, by the way, if
you've never experienced that, and I know the selling of
what do you mean, it's just a neighborhood and they
(19:35):
really they really celebrate Halloween more than others and they've
got yes that is and it sounds like it's maybe overhyped,
but it's I thought it was awesome. And if you've
never I mean, if you're just looking for a visual
that tells you that the fall season's here and Halloween
is here, Hillcrest is awesome. Now if you're looking to
go actually on Halloween night, a little bit of a
(19:56):
different situation this year because they're actually having you sign
up to where you need and it's free. But there's
so many people that want to be there that night
that they've got it there. They're gonna have some things
in place to make it a little more organized. But
maybe maybe you get out there tonight or maybe today
and check it out, because if you haven't seen it,
it's it's really really cool and this is one of
(20:16):
those things that I need to ask somebody that lives there.
Maybe somebody that lives in the area can can help
us out on the talkback line.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
But I just can't get over the level of participation.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
You'll see some houses that don't really do anything when
it comes to having decorations up and celebrating Halloween.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
However, that's the rarity.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
There's way more that not only will take part and
making that area look as if there's no better area
that celebrates Halloween.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
But they do it big.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
So I thank them for that because we just get
to go park and walk around and enjoy it. But
there's a lot of work that goes into it, and
it's really cool. I'd heard about it, didn't assume it
was overhyped or not something that I wouldn't be interested in.
But I don't think you can really really get a
feel for what it is until you're actually there and
you experience it yourself. And you know, my kids love it, obviously,
(21:09):
it's heaven for them to see just all the different
I mean that day we did it, we had a
I guess that was our day of actually taking in
the season and celebrating, you know, the Halloween season. We
did Hillcrest during the afternoon. Then we went to the
pumpkins event at Kentucky Kingdom and my son he made
the observation and look, Kentucky Kingdom did a great job.
(21:29):
I enjoyed that, and they were again there's a reason
they just call it pumpkins because there were pumpkins everywhere
and a lot of lights and really cool stuff. But
my son said he was more impressed with the setup
at Hillcrest. So yeah, I can't believe it. Tomorrow's Halloween
snuck up on me. How I mean, how is this
year almost over? I mean, we got two more months left?
Crazy crazy stuff, all right, you're crazy if you don't
(21:52):
stick with us here at news Radio eight forty WHS
trafficking weather updates on the way, another sports update, and
I wanted to make sure we have a little more
time to get into it, so we'll start at eight
o'clock with the conversation that we had earlier. Would you
allow L and PD to have security cameras in your home,
not to look at you at all times, but just
to have access to it if need be. And I
think this will only help. But as I mentioned earlier,
(22:15):
the real interesting thing for me is to see how
many people are cool with this and are going to
sign up, and that'll you know, we'll only find that
out with time, but we can certainly discuss it. So
stick around right here, it's the news radio eight forty
WHS
