Speaker 1 (00:01):
Then that's right, another Monday with you here.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
It is Coffee and Company Gilbeth Thornton's Kentucky at his
morning news right here on News Radio eight forty whas
hopefully you had yourselves a good weekend. But Monday is
upon us another week we get started here and we
are not at full capacity. We've got We've got a
great crew here, myself, Nick Coffee, Scott Fitzgerald, and John Shannon.
Our man John Alden, he's out this week, enjoying fall
(00:36):
break much. Yes, And he told me that they didn't
really have any plans. For those who don't know, John's
wife is a teacher in the Bullock County Public School system,
so she's off this week and he took off with her,
and they're just gonna enjoy some time together as new
parents should. So hopefully he enjoy He enjoys himself. But
we're gonna get it rolling here. A lot to react
(00:57):
to from the weekend. I think we may be in
for the fall weather. Well, I was gonna lie to
you and say, well, the fall weather is here to stay.
It's not really here. We're gonna be in the eighties,
I believe today, or at least low eighty.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
But after that, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
If it looks like as far as the four day forecast,
those warm, warm early October days last week and of
course late September, those are in the rear view. I
believe it didn't look like we're gonna have any days
expected to be above eighty. In fact, it doesn't look
like we're gonna get two eighty degrees, and that's good
because the Spookie seasons here. I don't know, maybe it
(01:35):
was just the drive. I did a lot of driving
this weekend. My wife and I went out of town
on Saturday for a little night overnight getaway and just
driving through mostly just through the state of Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
The fall. It looks like fall, Scott.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
The leaves are turning, right, you feel the crunch when
you walk on some of these leaves.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
But it's just been warm.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
No, it has been warm, and you see more of
the holiday get together as the holiday get you know,
Halloween decorations that are up. The thing is, yeah, the
eight to fourteen day out look looks like it's gonna
be above normal. But to your point, those above normals
aren't the crazy above normals we had before. And look
at some of the low temperatures you start to see
and again it's gonna be more seasonal as the earth
(02:14):
turns on its axis.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
Now you can't help, but it's gonna.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Get cooler so to your brain. And I can't wait.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Man, it's gonna feel nice and tomorrow's gonna be great,
much needed rain. The only plus side to not having
all this rain is I didn't have to get out
and cut the grass and what was a busy weekend
for us, So that's nice. And you know, I don't
mind that yards dry. It's gonna be dry the next spring.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
And no, just let it go. Let it go, people.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
So look, we've got a lot to get into today.
I'm gonna set the table for us quickly here because unfortunately,
when it comes to the national level, it was once again,
when I say national level, I mean national news. It
was once again another weekend of deadly shootings around the US,
and I mean it's the second consecutive Monday to come
in sort of reacting to these stories, and we'll certainly.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Do that today.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Also, just a why old story about a former NFL
quarterback now Fox NFL analyst who was involved in a
stabbing that just seems to be one of the more
odd stories I can think of in quite some time.
Mark Sanchez stabbed in stable condition, also charged with misdemeanor crimes.
And now we see the video of the seemingly elderly
(03:22):
man that that he stabbed. Just a weird situation. There
also a big, big announcement as we wrapped up the
show on Friday. This news, of course a little bit dated,
but we did find out that Senator David Yates is
named the interim Jefferson County Clerk. That of course was
a was an announcement that was teased here by Mary
(03:42):
Greenberg on this show. But at nine o'clock on Friday,
he did announce that David Yates is going to step
in as well as the interim chief and also mister
David James is going to be stepping in as the
Jefferson County Sheriff. So that's there's not a whole lot
to add to that, but certainly some big news here locally,
and of course on the sports side, a tough, tough
loss for Louisville. And I know I sometimes can get
(04:05):
into being a little sportsy on this show because that's
really my background. And I was talking to somebody yesterday
at my son's football game, and I think I realize
what it is, because it's just it's just what I've
done for so long.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Once I start, I need to rein it in.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
But I do think on a Monday after a big
football weekend where Louisville of course now has a bye
week as they sit here four and one, not off
to a bad start, but obviously the loss of Virginia
the way had happened, and really just if you had
any real big goals as far as maybe contending for
the acc that loss certainly puts yourself in a tough
spot to be able to see that realistically happening. Also,
(04:43):
I think we have two consecutive years where you are
nearly midway through the season and your biggest complaint is that, man,
if these guys just quit goofing, if they just quit
shooting themselves in the foot, and that's a tough spot
to be in, right, I mean, you'd rather I guess
you can find some comfort knowing how.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
You know, we've got the tools.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
If we clean some things up, man, we could actually
be pretty good. I like what we've got at this position,
in that position. But whenever you self inflict and you've
done it consistently through four or five games, You've got
an identity. And yeah, the one way I look at
it is, well, the wait, it's clean this up. Well,
if you keep doing it and you don't clean it up,
you know what you have. You have an identity. That's
(05:21):
what you do, that's who you are, and you can
change that. But I think that's the big takeaway for
me is that for two straight seasons, I still feel
pretty good about the talent level. They certainly have some
areas where they aren't as strong, but overall, they just
got to quit doing stupid stuff. It sounds easy to fix,
but you know, until you do it, it's part of
who you are.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Well, and then you're spoiling what was a fantastic defense.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Oh yeah, and they've been by the way, they've been
great all year. They've absolutely stepped up this year in
a year where we run English did face a lot
of criticism last year.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
So tip of the cap to to that side of
the ball.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
And then on the Kentucky side, I mean, you lose
to Georgia in a game that probably finished the way
a lot of people would have expected it given it
George is coming off the loss to Alabama, and of
course they're one of the better teams in the country.
Kentucky is not exactly that really at all.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
But there's now reports, some.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Reports since been deleted that maybe Butch Hampden the oc
at UK will be out this week, maybe as early
as Tuesday. Who knows if any of that is actually true.
But it's also one of those things that, given sort
of the current climate of Kentucky football right now, that
wouldn't surprise anybody, right just because you've really you've hit
a level of apathy for UK football that I don't
(06:30):
remember ever being there in the Mark Stoops era. So
certainly a lots of reactor from the weekend when it
comes to sports, but a lot of other things as well.
We are loaded here on a Monday morning, and I
hope you stick with us. It's five to twelve here
Kentucky and it's morning news, Coffee and company. Feel about
Thorton's with you here on News Radio eight forty whas.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Ne that did tween.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
It's a little bit dated, as of course it was
Friday morning, right after we ended the show, but certainly
something worth mentioning, as we've yet to really discuss. But
former Deputy mayor and x LMPD officer David James is
going to be serving as the interim county that was
announced by Mayor Greenberg on Friday morning. Obviously, with the
passing of John Aubrey and Bobby holstklaws, some prominent positions
(07:13):
were opened. So David David James is somebody that I've
gotten the chance to meet on a couple occasions, and
I'd say, if you're somebody plugged in with Louisville in
this city, he's somebody you're familiar with. So you could
tell during his introduction he was very very gracious of
the honor, and obviously he has close connections to Mayor
(07:34):
Greenberg as well, so also David Yates a couple of David's.
He's been named the interim county clerk, and he is
somebody that also has probably he's probably been on your
radar if you're somebody keeping up with politics and just
the ongoing things in Louisville. He's so it sounds like
he's hoping to, of course have this position long term,
(07:54):
not just on on the interim basis. But he's a
state senator and former Metro Council President again, David Yates
appointed interim Jefferson County Clerk.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
So as expected, there.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Was going to be some decisions to be made by
Mary Greenberg with those two vacancies, and he has made
those decisions.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
All right. We're just a couple of minutes away from
your next check of trafficking.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Whether we'll see how the roadways are looking here on
a Monday morning. And I tell you what, speaking of
the roadways, my wife and I we had a little
getaway this weekend. We ended up going to Renfro Valley.
You guys know, if you know a little bit about me,
you probably know that I'm a nerd for nineties country.
So at the State Fair, the route I think it's
called Roots and Boots Tour, Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin, and
(08:37):
Colin Ray they were at the fair. We missed it,
couldn't go to my wife. She planned a trip for
us to go see them this weekend, which was great
on her part.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
She did it just for me.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
She enjoyed it, had a good time as well, but
it's more my thing. So I in return surprised her
with the day trip and Scott. We drove through Kentucky.
We took the long route, but we stopped in like
three different towns. We stopped in Barge Town, Danville, and
then in Lincoln County. For some reason, I'm blanking on
the name of the little town. But what a beautiful
(09:07):
It was a beautiful saturday, just hit the back roads.
And obviously I love it here in Louisville, but the
rest of the state a lot of beauty to see,
so there's a lot to be said.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
For that, you know, and to go places you've never
been before.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
It really energizes your soul when you see new things,
take on new experiences, and you know, so many times,
so many people go on vacation, they always go to
the same spot.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
They're always well.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
And then, don't get me wrong, that's good if that's
your sure zone. I get that, but yeah, it is.
It does energize the soul. When you get a chance
to hit up new places, it kind of reinvigorates everything.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
There's a sense of adventure just kind of hitting the
open road. And it wasn't like we went on some
long road trip. We were really just about a couple
hours away. But certainly a lot of beauty here in
this state and I'd say a lot of the areas
I went through they don't deal with a lot of
traffic given sort of their location. But here in Louisville,
of course that's different. So we'll get to check a
traffic right here right now. Also we'll get a look
at how the forecast is gonna be today for Matt
(09:58):
melosavitche wlky, so stick with us. Also, we've got sports
coming up as well right here on news radio eight
forty whas. Thank you very much, John Shannon. It is
five point thirty five here on a Monday morning. Coffee
and Company with you, Kentucky and is Morning News. We
are fueled by Thorton's. Make sure you keep them in
mind when you get your day started. They can help
you do exactly that. A lot of great breakfast options, breakfast, sandwiches, doughnuts,
(10:21):
and of course coffee if that's your thing.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
For me, it's the it's the Monster energy drink and.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
They always have they have my propel waters too when
I go in the morning too, we go and if
I forget my banana in the morning, Thornton's right on time, man,
I can walk in there and grab my binet.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
See, they've got what we need.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yeah, we are probably fielded by Thornton's here again Coffee
and Company with your news radio eight forty whas a
story that, of course is getting a lot of attention
nationally now from right here in Kentucky, as the White
House is weigh in on the release of a killer
who killed a Kentucky child years ago.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
This happened in twenty fifteen. You just heard it in John's.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Story there, but it was a fatal stabbing of a
six year old in Versailles, Kentucky. Logan Tipton is the victim,
and this deranged individual broke into the Tipton family home
back in December of twenty fifteen and fatally stabbed the
young child as he was asleep. Jury later found him
not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, but convicted
(11:21):
him on assault charges. So he was sentenced to twenty
years in prison, but only served seven. I mean, I
think hearing of a twenty year sentence for something like that,
even if he had to serve the full twenty I
think you'd find many myself included, wondering if that was
if that was a punishment severe enough. But he began
serving supervised parole on October first, and is set to
(11:44):
remain under supervision until June eighteenth of twenty twenty six. So,
I mean, we'll see how this plays out, because right
now there's a lot of public backlash. The news of
his early release has drew widespread outrage, really, I mean
not only from Kentucky residents, but national folks as well.
And then the White House response, Press Secretary Caroline Levitt
(12:08):
responded by reposting different coverage of this story, and it
comes from Matt Walsh had had some criticism of the release,
saying the Trump administration is looking into this and calling
it a wholly unacceptable situation for a child killer to
walk free after just several years in prison. Seemingly so,
(12:28):
if there wasn't public outrage, if there wasn't this becoming
the story that it has become since he was released.
I mean, the thought of somebody committing such a heinous
act and being removed from supervised release in June of
next year is wild. I mean, that's crazy. So who
(12:50):
knows what happens moving forward here, but the father.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Of this, uh, this child.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Who was brutally murdered and just a heinous, heinous act
of again one of those things that you just in disbelief,
how and yeah, this is probably someone that does have
some real issues upstairs. I mean that would make sense,
given the fact that you would think, how could anybody
do something like this? And I did read a little
bit about the back of this. This is somebody not
(13:16):
from Kentucky that I guess was just completely I mean,
clearly somebody that was not well in the head. But
you know what that also means, and is I guess
the bigger issue here a real danger and a threat
to society. And to see that he's now free and
within less than a year now.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Will just be will be removed from being supervised release.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
I mean, that's crazy, makes no sense at all, and
I'm not surprised.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
That the backlash is what it is. But his father.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
Has done many interviews and probably will not turn down
an interview given the fact that he wants to raise
awareness that this person who murdered his six year old
son stabbed him to death as he slept. The fact
that he is going to is now a free man's
just probably something that, as you could expect, doesn't sit
well with him. But here is a clip from Fox
(14:12):
fifty six with the father of the six year old
who again ten years ago, his life was cut short
and really just a horrific, horrific way.
Speaker 6 (14:23):
Like this, I laid in bed, I gave up. I
gave up on life, I gave up my family, I
gave up on everybody.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
I just wanted to die.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Everybody deserves a finding chance to have justice for him
and law.
Speaker 6 (14:42):
I've had my talks with God because I'm not afraid
to tell you all. I told the court if I
ever crossed paths with him, I will kill the man.
I will kill him where he stands.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
So again, it's not just a I mean clearly here
locally there's been many examples of it, but judges making decisions,
and of course there's other others that have some influence
in some of these decisions. But when people tell us
and prove that they are very, very dangerous to society,
they're violent, even if there is a mental issue there
(15:16):
and and and that would maybe help explain as to
us some people could commit such heinous acts. I don't
know where we lost it. Seemingly we lost a little
bit of awareness to Yeah, they can be rehabilitated, they
can they can get they can get help as far
as just whatever issues they have going on mentally, but
they're still they've still shown to be extremely dangerous and
(15:39):
that should be in the minds of those who make
these decisions as far as what happens moving forward, and
the fact that this guy is Freeze is clearly not
sitting well with a lot of people, and I cannot
imagine the feeling of that father. I mean, I'm speechless
as far as just trying to wrap my mind around
what he would be feeling throughout the entirety of this
(16:01):
ordeal from ten years back when it occurred, and of
course to what's happening right now. So this of course
is getting some national covers now and makes total sense.
All right, let's get to a quick time out. We've
got trafficking weather updates on the way. Rory Onnil of
NBC News set to join us. We'll talk about some
potential peace in the Middle East before this government shutdown
(16:21):
comes to an end. That's I guess something that could happen.
So we'll get to that, and of course we'll talk
more about it throughout the morning, but obviously we'll get
Rory's thoughts on this Mark Sanchez situation. Former NFL quarterback
turn broadcaster who was stabbed and arrested after an altercation
over the weekend. So again, a lot to get to.
It's a busy, busy Monday morning. It is Kentucky and
(16:42):
his Morning News Coffee and company with you. Feel about
Thornton's right here our news radio eight forty whas coffee
and company with you. We're feel about Thorton's here on
news radio eight forty whas. Let's bring him in. He's
Rory O'Neil of NBC News. Rory, could we see some
peace in the Middle East? Obviously a big talking point
for quite time.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
Now.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
What is the latest negotiations here?
Speaker 7 (17:03):
Yeah, the fascinating question is could we get peace in
the Middle East before we get a government to reopen?
Speaker 5 (17:09):
Right, That's where we are these days.
Speaker 7 (17:11):
But a big meeting is happening in Cairo today where
there are indirect talks, essentially logistical talks about how we
would go about getting back the forty eight people who
are still held hostage. We think twenty of them are
still alive, and so you want them back and the
bodies of the others, and then facilitate the return of
(17:31):
I guess it's a swap, so hundreds of Palestinians being
held by Israel would also be turned over to them.
So how that's all being coordinated as part of today's discussion,
But there are still lingering issues as far as the
future of Gaza, how it will be managed, and what
Hamas will agree to.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Roy and Neil is our guest joining us here on
news Radio eight forty whas former NFL quarterback now broadcaster
Mark Sanchez stabbed over the weekend after an altercation with
a delivery driver.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
What a wild story here.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
It seems like every time I checked, there's a new wrinkle,
a new detail that just makes this more confusing. What
could you tell us as far as what we know
in regards to what happened on Saturday night in Indianapolis?
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Yeah, so apparently this guy has a box truck that he.
Speaker 7 (18:17):
The company takes out the cooking oil from places and
swaps it out.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
So he's running this box truck.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
He pulls it into an alley and he's doing his
thing when allegedly Sanchez comes up, gets into an altercation
with the guy.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
He's jumping in and out of the truck. Eventually there's
a fight.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
The sixty nine year old worker pulls a knife on Sanchez,
stabbing him repeatedly, even using pepper spray to try to
stop the attack. Sanchez is taken to the hospital with
multiple stab wounds and is then arrested there By the way,
the sixty nine year old guy really beaten up pretty badly,
ugly ugly cuts to his face if you've seen them
(18:54):
images shared online.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
But exactly why all this happened, it's a bit unclear.
Speaker 7 (19:00):
The man has said that Sancho has smelled of alcohol,
but sounds like something else was going on.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Yeah, and in the stabbing took place, it sounds like
from from the from the the older gentleman's side, as
he was, you know, claiming self defense. But there's also
just some details that make it seem like maybe there
was some some justification not in it turning into what
it turned into, that maybe Sanchez thought this was somebody that.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
That was there to I don't know.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
To me, it seems like alcohol probably was involved it
to an extent, and also some just confusion late night,
bad bad situation, bad timing, and what a mess this is.
Speaker 7 (19:37):
Right, It happened at what twelve thirty in the morning
or something like that, So yeah, something was going on.
But Sanchez is now facing a series of criminal charges,
all of the misdemeanors. But still you know exactly what
led to this rampage. There is surveillance video from a
hotel nearby, so that sort of captures a lot of
this and a lot of the evidence. Police a backs
(19:59):
up the old man's story.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Yeah, and yes, you mentioned sort of the beating that
he took. The pictures that I saw late last night
of him in the hospital. I mean, I'm surprised he's
not more injured. It seems like obviously gonna have a
long roaded recovery. But that is that. That's the visual
of somebody that was beaten badly.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
Yeah, it's not good. And again sixty nine years old.
Speaker 7 (20:22):
They say his hearing aids were taken out because the
noise the truck makes or the process of pumping out
the cooking oil. So he leaves his hearing aids out
because you know, you wouldn't want that noise going on.
So that may have also left him sort of blind,
I guess to maybe what Sanchez had been saying or
something like that.
Speaker 5 (20:41):
All that's still to be flushed out.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
Rory.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
As always, we appreciate your time, Enjoy the rest of
your Monday, and we'll talk soon.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
My friend fact Thick, that's Roy and Neil of NBC News.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
I think the older man not having a hearing aid
in and I guess not being able to hear of course,
that's going to impact the ability to communicate with somebody
who was probably drunk. It's late at night, odd situation
in an alley, Just a weird story overall. All right,
we've got trapping weather updates on the way. It is
a Monday morning. We've also got another sports update coming
your way with Scott Fitzgerald. So stick with us again.
(21:10):
It's Coffee and Company. Phil about Thornton's on News Radio
eight forty whas
