Speaker 1 (00:00):
Not many, No many. I don't know what it is.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Springsteen's Christmas songs some of my favorite good stuff, and
I think there's also the element of it being a
live performance that makes it just different than a lot
of Christmas songs.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Some extra genuineness too, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
No doubt, like it kind of feels like you're you're
at a Christmas party or something good stuff. We're having
a Christmas party as this is our last show before
we before we get out of here for the Christmas holidays,
so we're not here tomorrow or on Christmas Day, and
also not on Friday as well, so we've got an
extended holiday break and I am very thankful for that,
(00:37):
looking forward to spending Christmas with my family and really
soaking it in because this year, more than any year,
it's hit me that I'm in the I'm in the
I'm in my prime as a dad when it comes
to Christmas because my kids are so into it. It
makes it so much fun. My son and I were
talking yesterday about setting up the go pro camera out
(00:58):
side to see if we can get a we can
get some footage of the big guy as he lands
on the roof, So you know, now, I'm trying to
figure out how can can make that work. So it's
it's a lot of fun. But yeah, we were celebrating
Christmas and we've talked a lot of Christmas stuff today.
But real quick, just some some news that you have
heard throughout the morning and the news updates, and we
have discussed it a little bit. The Mid City Mall. Uh,
(01:19):
the future of that that property is doesn't look great
to put it, to put it lightly, but I feel
like this has been a multiple year thing where it
just hasn't looked good. But now that you see that
they're having that they're losing two tenants that you know
probably bring a lot of people there. I mean, I
don't when you think of Mid City Mall, I don't
(01:41):
think you typically think of going to value market. But
that is a business that's there that you know, sells
a lot of items. I'm sure people that live in
the area they frequent it. Well, they're they're gonna be
leaving the area here soon.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
The the theater, Baxter Avenue Theater, that's the one that
of course made a lot of folks because I'm sure
many of you listening have spent a lot of time
there and watched a lot of movies and it's going
to be shutting down at the end of the year,
so that, of course, that's something a lot of folks
are reacting to. Also, a record travel expected this holiday season.
(02:15):
I feel like every year we say that and there's
not ever any specific reason for that year to see
such a boost in travelers. But they say, let me
just pull up the numbers here because although it seems unrealistic. Again,
I guess I'm thinking to myself, I do know a
lot of people who travel. I guess for me, I've
never once been out of town on Christmas Day because
(02:35):
thankfully for me, all my family is here. But the
TSA is preparing for forty four million passengers.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Over the holidays. So God, that just sounds like a nightmare.
It really does.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
We've also talked a little bit about the Jeff Brahms situation,
and I feel foolish even saying that that it's a
situation because he's coaching in a bowl game today, but
Michigan is believed to have strong interest in him. They
have an offer than the job, yet it doesn't sound
like But if they do and he decides he wants
to stay at Louisville. You can do with that whatever
(03:07):
you want. But as a Louisville fan, for me, I
would have no problem in saying, over and over I
would I would be grateful that he decided to stay here,
because if Michigan wants him and he stays here, he's
turning down a much better job that can give him
way better resources in every way, and he would have
a better chance of succeeding at the highest level in
his profession. Most people wouldn't turn down that opportunity in
(03:31):
their line of work.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
So if if, and it's.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
All there's a lot of hypotheticals here, because again we
don't know if they're going to offer him or not,
and if they don't, we'll never know. I guess what
he would have done. But it's just it's a situation
that you probably will very rarely be in, right, because
there's not many jobs that that that come available that
that would that would probably intrigue Brahm, and this one
(03:54):
might because again it's Michigan. Also, let's be real, their
situation is also a factor in this whole thing, because
they are losing their coach way late in the game.
They've lost their coach, not because they wanted to lose them,
they had to fire them, and they fired him after
the game of musical chairs came to an end. When
it comes to the coaching.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Cycle, so.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
I would hope that Louisville can find a way to
Lockjef bram In and get him committed long term. And
the real ask, it seems in every coach in the
country's asking for more money, not for their personal for themselves.
I mean, so, I'm sure coaches want more money and
they'll take it, but you need in il money, you
need nil resources to be able to compete at a
(04:34):
high level. And for those that say, well, brom didn't
lose to cal in Virginia this year because of money,
what's your point?
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Does that mean that he won't again? If you have.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
National championships, three of them in a five year window,
you're rolling right. That's very unrealistic. Most programs never do that.
But a program that in that situation would still have
their coaches and their administrators rounding up money around the
clock if they can, because you need that to to
stay competitive.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
It's just where we are.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
But again, Louisville planned today at two o'clock, a rare
two o'clock Tuesday afternoon Louisville football game. But hey, that's
what you do when it's the bake the bush's baked beans.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, bush, it is.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Gonna be a gatorade bath of bake beans. That's a
pretty traditional thing. They stopped doing it like that.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
They stopped doing it.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
They used to do it, but now, Yeah, Jeff Brown
will not be wearing baked beans as he exits the
field today if they win, because they stop doing it.
So yeah, it's very gross, very very gross. But I mean,
I keep having to remind myself that Louisville has a
game I'm gonna watch. And it sounds like, by the way,
I don't know, I don't know if this is this
is a rumor, but it sounds like some guys that
(05:47):
were banged up, they've had a month now to get
healthy and they want to play. Like it sounds like
we may see Isaac Brown again today, which would be
great because he's he's he's sensational, but he hadn't played
in a while because he was banged up. To finish
the all right, let's get to a quick time out.
We'll check on the traffic in the weather out there,
and some more Christmas stuff here on the other side
that I want to get into, including a well I'll
(06:12):
save it because it's some good stuff, but just just
some more Christmas items before we get out of here.
When it comes to American's preferences on Christmas Day, stick
around right here. It's news ready to wait forty whas.
So we've got another Reddit thread where folks are sharing
the worst Christmas gift they've ever received. And some of
these are just like, who would get somebody that as
(06:33):
a gift? Others are just, you know, they didn't feel
like they got the right. So somebody mentioned that they
got a Walmart blender that costs twenty bucks as their gift,
and that person gave them a tag horyor watch, which
of course is a very nice, nice brand watch. I
don't have any I can't think of any gift that
(06:55):
I've received that I was like, who would get me this?
Other than one? And it was it was a simple
mix up. This was probably I don't know, twelve thirteen
years ago. I'd been with my wife at the time
for a while. We were probably actually this might have
been before we were married. But she has her grandparents
(07:15):
that they're not they don't live around us, so we
don't see them all that often. But she asked, like,
what do I get Nick, And my wife told her,
you know anything U of L something, you know, Louisville Cardinal,
that's you know, that's his bag, that's you know that.
In that point, I was, you think I'm a lunatic
about U of L sports. Now in recent years, I was,
(07:35):
it was it was different back then I was a
certified lunatic. But anyways, she just knew, hey, you know
that she knew I was all into one of the two,
and she got it wrong. So she went all out
and got me a bunch of UK gear and I
opened it and I thought it was a joke, Like
I thought it was, you know, like haha, this is
like this is meant for somebody here that's a UK fan.
(07:57):
And I guess like my reaction kind of set it all.
But nobody would like say it out loud, and I
think my wife even thought that it was some kind
of like mix up or she was trying to play
a joke, and she was very sad, and I had
to tell her it's not a big deal, like I
get it. But then, you know, I also to tell her.
I'm not keeping it, like, but that was just like
(08:18):
a mix up like that. You know, had it been
had she gotten it right which side of the rivalry
I was, I was on, it would have been a
great gift. So yeah, I uh, I can't think of
any I mean I've had gifts where I wasn't like
super excited. I mean sometimes the gifts that I get
that I need, I'm like, that's not that's I guess
that's an adult.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
That's where you end up.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Like if you get something that you need but you
haven't got it yet, you've put it off, or maybe
you just didn't realize how much you needed it, but
somebody did. Like, those are the really good gifts.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Now, I've got one that I thought about during the
break Okay, this was last year. I'd mentioned this that
I would really like to have one of these and
didn't think anybody would ever just get it for me.
And it's a near exact replica of the old Oaken
bucket that in In and Purdue play for in football.
Oh that's awesome and it's it's it's huge, and it's
it's nice to have I sit next to my desk
(09:06):
at home, and I like having it.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, that's uh, that's like the that kind of gift
is exactly what I'm talking about to where you wouldn't
have thought of it. You may not have actually gone
through with getting it because you may think, yeut, i't
really know if I need that, I really need to
spend money. But it's the perfect kind of gift somebody
can get you if they want to spend that money
and you clearly appreciate it, and it's you know, right
down your alley. So yeah, we talked about this a
(09:29):
little bit yesterday. Now I've got some some some evidence
on my side. I don't know how giving cash became
something that like people are just like you that they
don't they don't they don't want it or they don't
want to give it. I don't know how anybody can
get cash and not that and not think that's a
good gift to get. Now again, if you're somebody that
just wants to open up something and it be in
a big box, Hey, if you're gonna give somebody one
(09:49):
hundred bucks, wrap five twenty dollars bills in different boxes.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
And let them open it up.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Because to me, like I'm not again, there are other
gifts that can be more sentimental that kind of stuff,
But like as far as just like I know I'm
gonna use it, I know I need it. Who doesn't
always need and want cash? So there is a survey
that this is from the Associated Press Center of Public
Affairs research that finds most Americans say cash and gift
(10:16):
cards are not just acceptable, they're welcome. So sixty percent
of Americans say cash or gift cards are very acceptable
holiday gifts. Nine to ten say they are at least
somewhat acceptable. Younger adults are even more on board. Two
thirds of people under forty five say cash is a preference.
So that's compared to fifty five percent of those over
(10:38):
forty five. So regardless of age range, I think people
have realized cash is a great gift. And I think
another reason why that may be, like if that's changed
a lot over the years, I think it may be
because I'm not sure people carry cash now quite like
they used to.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
I know I certainly don't.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
So yeah, if you're giving me cash for Christmas, thank
you now. Again, I also like other gifts, not like
it's not like it has to be cash, But yeah,
I'm I'm never gonna not appreciate somebody giving me some
cold heart cash as a Christmas gift or anytime if
you ever want to give.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Me cash, I'll take it.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
All right. We've got to take a quick time out
and get to some traffic and weather updates. Also, we
will talk some sports with mister Scott Fitzgerald. We've got
Rody O'Neil set to join us coming up at eight
thirty five. We'll talk a little more about this holiday
travel and a battleship. We're getting a battleship according to
President Trump yesterday. And then we'll finish up with a
little time machine Tuesday as we go back and talk
(11:31):
about some of the big stories out there in Louisville
on Christmas Day in years past. So a lot more
to come as we wrap it up right here at
News Radio eight forty whas. I gotta tell you, this
may be the best Christmas gift I get all Christmas
is the introduction to something I didn't know existed and
Aaron tipp and Christmas album. Thank You Merry Christmas.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
John. I don't know what I could get you to
repay you.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
You don't need to give me anything. This is good stuff.
I didn't even know he had a Christmas album, but
of course he does. He's Aaron Tippy.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Right now, I have to go look it up. I'm
right behind you. I'm with you.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
So we've got just a few minutes left here. But
we what I've done here and there, I've not been consistent.
But tom Machine Tuesday, we look back at different stories
that were big certain you know, twenty five, thirty, sometimes
ten years ago on the exact date. What we're doing
here is I'm going back and looking at what was
in the news, what was considered worthy of being a
story it Christmas in previous years. And I was just
(12:29):
looking at different years and it was just make sure
I've got the the year corrector yeah, this was back
in two thousand. Yees, so it's two thousand. This was
this was twenty five years ago. The Courier Journal did
a story on different local celebrities to see what their
favorite Christmas gift was when they were a kid, and
(12:50):
our own Terry Miners was asked and I'll read to
you the quote that Terry gave. Yeah, that that Terry
gave the Sea Jaysons. The thing I always wanted and
I finally got because I persisted, was the spiral graph.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
It was.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
It was the stupidest thing in the world. I wanted
it so badly and it turned out to be this
plastic nothing. Watching the TV commercial, my eyes were spinning
around like cymbals on Las Vegas one armed bandits. I
was so enthralled with this machine. It wasn't a machine really.
You take your pen and you stick it into a
holder and you roll it around in a circle, and
(13:26):
the mechanism would create flowers or patterns. Also, he goes
on to say, after I had it about thirty seconds,
I thought, what's this good for? Then I would draw
one of those flowery patterns on my little brother's head
or on my altar.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Boy.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
He also goes on to say, I would say by
noon on Christmas Day, I was already picking out a
spot in the garbage for it.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
But I wanted to.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I wanted it for a couple of years and push
my parents to get it, thinking it would make the
next I would be the next Michelangelo.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
It hardly worked. I think I'm still scarred from it.
He says.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
It was the perfect It was perfect for him at
the time, but not the gift that he wanted. So yeah,
that's what Terry wanted many many years ago. And then
another quick story from many many years ago. This was
back in nineteen ninety three and we had very unexpected
snow and I'm trying to get the exact details here. Yeah,
so this was a forecast that was just wrong. A
(14:23):
surprise snowstorm dumped five inches across Louisville and southern Indiana
and much of Kentucky, and it caught drivers, road crews
and of course meteorologists off guard right at Christmas. So
they initially said one to two inches max. But they
got five inches plus in certain areas. Temperatures dropped into
the ten to fifteen degree range, and it kept snow
(14:45):
on the ground for quite some time. There was roads
that were frozen and thirty injury accidents reported, but no
fatalities in Louisville, specifically because of the unexpected snow. So
also apparently the the yeah, it says here that it
was one of the biggest misses as far as just
(15:05):
not getting it right. Right.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
That's why they call them weather guests.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Yeah, that's yeah. So, yeah, I don't think we're I
don't think we're due for that. When we've got a
high of sixty two. Is it on Christmas Day?
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Yeah, I don't think we're going to be getting any
shorts weather and outplaying golf.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Yep, that's uh. And I'm sure many people are are
here for it. And this year I am too. We
had too much cold weather and snow to start December.
I'm happy it's gonna be warmer.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
All right.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Well, we're out here and Dwight's coming your way next
and then we're out for the rest of the week,
So enjoy the holidays. Merry Christmas, Happy holidays everybody, and
we'll talk to you next week.
