Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thank you, John. It is six oh five here Kentucky
and it's Morning News with Nick Coffee on News Radio
eight forty whas So, the big move was made by
President Trump as we now have some US muscle that's
been put into play here with the Israel and Iran situation.
And again, a lot of it just stood out yesterday.

(00:22):
And we had a conversation just a moment ago with
Rory O'Neil in BC News and I asked him, did
it seem as if and I don't even remember how,
I probably butchered the question, to be honest with you, however,
my question was essentially, did it stand out to you
that there was a lot of emphasis Sunday when it
comes to just the situation and the United States is side.

(00:44):
They're not at war with Iran, They're at war with
the nuclear program, which makes sense, I understand it. But
then again, then you you hear President Trump mentioning a
potential regime change in Iran, It's it's a little bit
kind of contradictoring, but then again, that's kind of that's
been pretty consistent. Consistently contradicting yourself is never a great look,

(01:07):
and it certainly seems as if that's been the case
at times. But that's that's just that's just how I viewed.
I think this is VP jd Vance yesterday and he
is speaking, and yet it would be great if I
actually had the sound turned on. It's pretty I think
I'm new here, but that's pretty important in radio, right,
making sure that the sound is on when you're gonna
when you're gonna play it. No, Christian, we're not at

(01:29):
war with Iran. We're at war with Iran's nuclear program,
and that again, maybe that was just always the stance,
but it did seem as far as the messaging in
reaction to what happened Saturday evening yesterday, it seems as
if that was there was a real focus on making
sure that that was out there. So that is where
we are, and this is something that probably doesn't need

(01:51):
to be said as much as I've already said it
throughout the first hour this morning, but I it I
think with strong opinions on both sides, and really the
reaction from the right and the left was pretty pretty
expected as far as those that are praising President Trump
and stating that it was the right move, and then

(02:14):
there are the others that think it was not only
a mistake, they're highlighting the fact that there wasn't the
green light given by Congress. And then you actually do
have some that are I don't know what these these
folks identify. I don't know what what people call the
Republicans who are pro Trump and certainly big time Republican,

(02:37):
but they don't they don't like the United States dipping
their toe into wars that that, you know, I guess
with countries that they aren't believed to be such a threat.
And again, as far as are they really a threat,
that's that's for. I mean, everybody's got their own thought
on that whole thing. But again, what I'm what I'm
getting at as far as what probably doesn't need to
be said, but I've said it many times, why not

(02:58):
say it once more? Anybody with any reaction as of
right now, as far as what took place over the weekend,
That that tells you they know where this thing is going,
good or bad. They don't know. None of us know.
We just have to We just have to wait and see.
But again, when it comes to the the and again
it's it's a legitimate point that's being made that this

(03:21):
was an attack on Euron's nuclear sites without Congress giving
the the official and formal approval. But that's that's Unfortunately,
that's not uncommon. The last four presidents, Obama, Trump, Biden,
and now Trump again have all launched military actions, from
drone strikes to again bombing Eiron's nuclear sites, which took
place over the weekend. So last I checked, the constitution

(03:42):
is pretty clear only Congress can declare war. And again,
we're not, technically, I guess, at war with Iran. And
that's why the emphasis is that we're at war with
their nuclear programs. I mean, that's semantics. But regardless, people
both sides have had people will bring up the the
you know, sounding the alarm essentially that hey, this isn't

(04:05):
necessarily the way that you're supposed to be going about
these things. You had ran Paul to Bernie Sanders mentioning that, hey,
this didn't go this did not go through the formal
process that it's supposed to go through. However, they're just
they're drowned out anytime it's brought up. And I don't
think that they should be because again I think at
times they mean I think that's that's a legitimate point,

(04:25):
but I think what's happening here is it's just easier
to act first and then debate later, because that's just
I mean, that's where we are, but ignoring the risks
that come with this kind of stuff. I mean, maybe
it's nothing, but maybe maybe it's not. All right. We've
got another update of traffic and weather coming your way.
Also will hit sports coming up in fifteen minutes. And

(04:48):
there was once again another attempted streak takeover here in Louisville,
but once again LMPD they snipped it out early, shut
it down. It seems like there's just a fun cat
and mouse game. They're just it's like they because nobody's
getting arrested, there's no like. I guess looks as if
it's about to potentially be a scary situation, only for
LMPD to do a good job and shut it down.

(05:09):
But yeah, we'll get to that in a lot more
on Kentucky This Morning News News Radio eight forty WHS.
Good Monday morning, Kentucky, and thanks for hanging out with us.
Starting your day, maybe you're not starting your day, maybe
your day is ending. I don't everybody's got their own schedule.
But whatever you're doing, however, you're listening. Thank you, we
appreciate it. Again. It is Kentucky and his Morning News

(05:30):
on News Radio eight forty whas Nick Coffee. That's me
John all On alongside. We'll have an update on sports
coming your way in about ten minutes with Scott Fitzgerald
and of course another newscast from John Shannon out six thirty.
I do want to let you know that if you
are listening on the iHeart radio app, then you can interact,
you can share your thoughts. I'm sure there are many
of you that have thoughts when it comes to what's
currently going on with the United States intervening and dipping

(05:55):
their toe in the water, if you will. I mean,
there's all kinds of different ways you can describe it,
but I can't. I got to tell you I can't
move past the way in which this has been described
as midnight hammer. I mean, that's that's awesome. So again,
just wann to remind you that you do have a
way to share your thoughts, and we can't play everything

(06:15):
that comes in, but if you use the talkback feature
on the Auhet radio app, and you know there's thirty seconds,
I think it gives you to to say whatever you want.
And again it doesn't guarantee you that it's gonna end
up being part of the show. But we I like
to to mix in some interactions, some thoughts from our
listeners here and there. And I think the more we
do that and you hear other voices other than just
ours that are from the listeners from the community, the

(06:38):
more inclined you may be to to share your own.
So again, it's the talkback feature. If you listen on
aheart radio, just tap that microphone button and it'll prompt
you to uh to let it rip. And that's that's
that's how easy it is, all right. So over the weekend,
another potential street takeover was was shut down. This one

(06:58):
took place in the New lou areas. So at about
twelve forty five am, LMPD was called to Clay and
Market Street for multiple disorderly people after a call er
expressed concerns of what they thought was going to be
a potential street takeover. So the LMPD is real true.
The Real Time Crime Center confirmed that they were I

(07:20):
guess about two hundred and fifty people between the Garage
bar and the Big Bogita Bodagheita I'm not sure if
I'm sure, I'm not saying that right actually, but I
know exactly which restaurant it is because I can I
can visualize it. So that area there a new lou
By garage bar and I guess maybe just a couple
of blocks up. There were about again roughly two hundred

(07:40):
and fifty people, motorcycles, cars, all in the area. So
LMPD began staging additional officers and approached the scene with
I guess a relatively smaller police presence than maybe you
would expect. But it worked out well because they had
the intentions of of clearly resolving the situation, and they

(08:03):
relied on communication and community cooperation from everybody involved, and
it worked out to her. Once again, this of course
is this is a situation, but no arrests were made.
And to say that this was just nothing, I mean,
I don't know if that would be accurate, because you
did have some businesses that opted to close early because
of the situation, so it's not like it was, you know,

(08:25):
move along, nothing to see here. And also I think
it's these are things that I think you want to
get out there to let the community know that, hey,
if you are trying to take these street takeover situations
that became a real problem in that little pocket of
the Highlands there on Barchtown Road. If you're trying to
take it elsewhere, we're going to find out, and we're

(08:47):
going to show up and we're going to As a
chief Humphrey has said, we're going to enforce the law,
which I don't know why. That's such a subtle but
awesome way to just let people know what your plan is.
We're here to enforce the law, and it's almost an endurre.
You can try to challenge that if you'd like, but
you'll probably regret that. So LPD worked with officers from

(09:07):
the ABC Alcohol Beverage Control and talk to the bar
management and they were able to get this thing taken
care of to where all parties were cooperated throughout. It
was about a thirty minute situation in total and there
were no citations at all made by LMPD or ABC.
So again, this is as much as there's criticism and

(09:30):
sometimes for good reason when it comes to to law enforcement.
I feel like since the since it really became a
big deal with the two straight weekends of Chaos and
the Highlands, that has certainly gotten better in that area,
and we've now had attempted situations to take place elsewhere
that have been peacefully shut down with nobody getting arrested.
I'm not really sure it could be handled much better

(09:51):
from the LMPD side. So well done. All right, We've
got another update of traffic and weather coming your way,
and then of course we've got another update of sports
as well right now our news radio eight forty WHS.
Thank you very much, John Shannon, it is Kentucky and
his morning news here on news radio eight forty whas
Nick Coffee with you at six thirty five. Good morning,
Kentucky in a happy Monday to you, a very very

(10:14):
hot weekend that is going to carry into this week
as the heat wave is upon us. I I for
those and I'm not going to give you my address,
not that you would care, but I my address is Shepherdsville,
but I don't feel like I live in Shepherdsville. John.
You can attest to this right like the zip codes
and the you know your address and the city if

(10:34):
you know you know. But anyways, I bring it up
because I just looked up at the WKY weather forecast
that's in front of me here and it's showing temperatures
in certain areas and heat indecks one seven in Bullock
County today and not much different elsewhere in the region.
But man, it's going to be hot, So stay hydrated
and just prepare for it because Summer is here right

(10:56):
on schedule. Summer arrived and let us know in a
major way that she's here and she's here to stay
for a while, So just be prepared. Hopefully everybody had
a good weekend. I know I certainly did. Didn't come
to a good end because I am an Indiana Pacers
fan and they lost last night in the NBA Finals,
and we've talked about it throughout the morning here and
there when Scott had his first sports update. So I

(11:19):
know many of you probably don't care about the finals
or don't care about my Pacers. But one thing that
I think became a real unavoidable talking point surrounding not
just the NBA Finals coverage, but the NBA postseason coverage
and really just the NBA coverage overall from ESPN. I mean,

(11:39):
maybe I'm the only one that noticed it, but it's
not just fans on X because that's where you go
if you want to share some negative news and just
be toxic. Like x is a good resource for news
information if you can weed out what's real and what's not.
But it's just it's probably an exaggeration here. In fact,

(12:00):
it is an exaggeration. But I think you can find
in the responses to certain ex tweet sex posts, whatever
you want to call them. You know, those that don't
have any information just have the blank profile and they've
got three followers, and they follow eighty people, and if
you go look at their replies, all they're doing is
just you know, being nasty about anything and everything. It's

(12:21):
a real toxic place. So maybe this isn't the greatest
example to give you, but it became something that was
covered by those who cover the NBA that the ESPN's
NBA cover just is just so subpar, and it really
stood out last night. Maybe it was me just being
a bitter Pacers fan as they were gassing up the
Thunder as they should, and the Thunder of course were
the better team and they won. But I expect there'll

(12:45):
be some big changes next year. And look, everybody has
their own taste as far as like there's like, for example,
I don't know many that say Oh yeah, give me
Stephen A. Smith. Oh, absolutely, give me more Steven A.
I don't know anybody that I would say, I mean
a friend, acquaintance, anything that's like, yeah, ESPN, you know,
I'm a fan, but really wish they'd give me more

(13:06):
Stephen Am Not sure that's ever been said by anybody,
but clearly he does something good enough there for him
to have I think the highest salary at ESPN, and
they put him everywhere. So there's a lot of complaining
about it, but yet it seems to be working as
far as just again, he's somebody they've invested a ton

(13:27):
of money in. But it did feel like there was
a slight shift, especially during the finals coverage, that there's
more noise than ever, And of course that's what Stephen A.
Smith does. He makes a lot of noise. He yells,
he's loud, even so much last night that Bob Myers,
the former Golden State Warriors GM, who was you know,
who was? Who was? I don't know how long he's

(13:49):
been with he's been with the ESPN crew, but he
went from being a GM to now being a broadcaster,
and last night, I mean he just said, just because
you yell at doesn't make it true. And I don't
think that was part of a bit. I don't think
that was just I think he's speaking for fans who
are like, all right, this guy needs to quit screaming
at me, and this isn't really their fault. And I,

(14:10):
you know, for those who don't know, I used to
be in sports broadcasting long before well, I wasn't a
broadcaster as far as doing play by play or anything
like that, but I worked in sports radio. I was
a radio loud mouth myself. So with that being really
my background for more than ten years, I always hesitate
to say, all this guy stinks because everybody has their
own preference, and I'm sure there are people who think
I think so. Everybody has their own taste. And if

(14:30):
you've got an employer willing to invest in you and
make you a part of their coverage, then you know
you're doing good enough. Just because one person or many
people don't like a particular host and their style and
their opinions, if they're employed and things are going well,
then there's enough people that justify it. But with Doris

(14:51):
Burke and Richard Jefferson being a part of it, with
Mike Brain, who's been there a long time as the
play by play guy. It just didn't It did not
seem It's put it this way, it stood out more
than I was ever expecting that you're watching the NBA
Finals in a Game seven, and it wasn't as if
there was one big goof for one specific moment where
it felt low class that it felt subpar, but the coverage,

(15:16):
as far as those that were a part of it collectively,
it did not match what we actually had, which was
a Game seven of the NBA Finals, And it just
to me it seemed as if it got so bad
to where it wouldn't shock me if they completely revamp things.
And look they're lead for those that don't know the least,
ESPN is going to lease the TNT guys for next year,

(15:37):
meaning Chuck shack Ernie, those guys that you felt like
were going away because TNT is no longer involved in
the NBA. ESPN is leasing their contracts to where they
can utilize them, but they're not using them for endgame.
They're using them for I guess the pre postgame and
even halftime to where we don't have to listen to
Steven A. Smith's scream as much. But here's what's probably

(15:57):
gonna happen. They're gonna put Steven A with him, and
he's just gonna yell. And I guess it could be
entertaining to see how like Charles Barkley responds to that,
because maybe that would be entertaining. But again, maybe I'm
a bitter Pacers fan. But it felt like last night
was a real eye opener for a lot of people that, man,
how did ESPN fall so far behind TNT? And look
even if T and T didn't exist, because it's unrealistic

(16:18):
to expect to compete with what they do. However, even
if they even if that wasn't the standard, the the
top dog in NBA coverage, I still think what you
have at ESPN now would be subpar. All Right, An
update of traffic and weather's coming your way right here
on news radio eight forty WHS six forty seven. Here
at Kentucky, INA's Morning News. We have another sports update

(16:40):
coming your way in about eight and a half minutes
with Scott Fitzgerald. Another check of traffic and weather on
the way in about two and a half minutes. But uh,
I don't think it's out of line, and I'm certainly
not attempting to pick on Kroger by any means. But
in my I guess this is the fourth week that
I've that I'm getting started here. Kroger has been talking
about quite a bit compared to other things. And they

(17:03):
had road and infestation at one location which shut it down,
and then they had another location, I believe the Lagrange
Road exit or the look, yeah, the Lagrange Road location,
I should say that had nothing. It wasn't didn't get
shut down. It was not as severe as what happened
at the Gass Avenue location. But again, you never want
to be in the news because there's road and infestation

(17:24):
at one location and there's I guess the potential threat
of it due to mouse droppings or rodent droppings. So
it's not great. But another piece of news from overnight,
pretty scary situation where they ended up having to ended
up with no shots fired and no real you know,
nobody was injured or anything like that, but certainly a

(17:47):
scary situation as there was a call made about an
active aggressor at the West Louisville Kroger. That was last
night around eight forty. Police responded to the Kroger. In
the twenty seven hundred block of West Broadway, and when
they got there, they began clearing everybody out of the store,
employees and shoppers. No shots were fired, according to LMPD,

(18:07):
but they did have to close down or evacuate I
should say for the time being McDonald's and Popeyes, which
is right near that location. So it all started because
they were notified that somebody entered. In fact, I think
it was a young adult or a teen that entered
the Kroger wearing a mask and carrying a handgun. So
that led to a none one one call of an
active aggressor and obviously you got to take those things serious.

(18:29):
So it worked out well. But another not so great
piece of news that's out there when it comes to Kroger,
and again they can't control that, but just again, that's
not something you ever want happening in your store. And
now we know this actually came out late last week
I believe it was that there are I think a
total of sixty Kroger locations that are going to close
over the next eighteen months. So as far as which

(18:51):
of those stores in Kentucky you are going to close,
I mean, it's tough to know, but there are I mean,
there are you'd probably know there are so many locations
here in the state. There's more than yeah, there's there's
Kroger dot Com. They're they're I guess their database of
locations here lists more than one hundred stores in more
than fifty Kentucky cities. And I know, I'd be shocked

(19:15):
if in fact, these closure these closures don't end up
impacting those that are that are here, which not that
I would have the information to see these kind of
things coming, but uh, yeah, I mean that's a that's
a closing that many stores, is it's rob It says
that they currently operate two thousand, seven hundred and thirty
one stores. That was at the beginning of this year,

(19:38):
and uh, the cut is gonna Yeah, the cut is
going to represent about two percent of all of its location.
So I guess it's not a huge issue. It's just
you don't often see from a you know, grocery re
type giant. I mean, again, I don't know where they
are on the list as far as competing with with
others in their industry, but certainly Kroger a big name brand.
But yeah, they're gonna be closing down sixty stores, all right,

(20:00):
an update of trafficking weather is coming up right now,
and then an update on sports with Scott Fitzgerald right
here on news radio eight forty WHS
