Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, Kentucky, Ina. It is seven oh five here Kentucky,
INA's morning news with Coffee and Company on News Radio
eight forty whas Nick Coffee. That's me John on alongside.
Thanks to John Shannon for the latest newscast. We'll have
sports coming your way in about twenty minutes with Scott Fitzgerald.
And one of the big stories really nationally this morning
right now, certainly on the national radar, comes from our
(00:22):
home state here in Kentucky. As yesterday, it all started
around eleven thirty am when a trooper was shot after
he pulled over a suspect near the Bluegrass Airport. After
the traffic stop got underway. The suspect opened fire during
that traffic stop and obviously from there got a lot worse.
He ended up than carjacking someone, and thankfully there were
(00:45):
no injuries reported at that incident, But then he made
his way to the Richmond Road Baptist church and shot
and killed two people. And there are others that are
injured as well, including the officer who was shot. His status,
I've not heard an update this morning, but as if yesterday,
there's been no real update at all on the status
of that officer as well as the identity of the suspect.
(01:08):
I would imagine we'll get that at some point today.
There's a lot of people, I mean, I feel like
every time I open up Facebook or even Twitter, I
see someone sharing a picture of who will probably end
up being who this suspect is. It just hasn't been
confirmed yet, so and of course people will dig into
everything about this person and try to blame one of
(01:29):
the political sides as far as of their you know, see,
this isn't a lefty, this isn't a map, I mean,
and it's just kind of if I've learned that pretty
quickly here in this this role that anytime there is
a situation, really any situation in the world, probably there
are people that are wired to just decide, well, how
can we blame this on the other side of of
(01:50):
of the aisle, And it's it's not surprising anymore. But
I don't know, that's not the first thing that comes
to mind for me when it when when you have
situations like this. But maybe I'm maybe I'm in the minority.
But again, we'll probably found that later today. Because yesterday
the press conference in Lexton, law Enforcement said that they
were going to make it public. However, they decided to
do that as far as the identity of the suspect
(02:12):
once the suspects family has been notified, so I would
expect that that comes today. Also an overall scary situation,
but nobody hurt, which at the end of the day,
that's a great thing, especially when you consider what happened
in Lexington. But in Louisville here during one of the
big events that this city has every year, the run
for the Roses Girls basketball Tournament. I wouldn't think you'd
(02:35):
say this if you couldn't back it up, but the
event claims to be the biggest girls basketball tournament in
the world, and yesterday, as they were into tournament play,
they had to shut down because there was initially a
report of an active aggressor at the basketball tournament at Fairgrounds,
and then there was another report of an active aggressor
at Kentucky Kingdom that led to chaos in a variety
(02:58):
of ways. And it's great to know that it ended
up being a false alarm and everybody is okay, but
a lot of people still went through some pretty traumatic experiences,
I would imagine, just because when there's that chaos going
on and nobody seems to know. I mean, you got
to think about the timing here. I mean I got
the news report that that was going on, and then
(03:18):
there was some information available I feel like pretty quickly
as far as what was going on. L and PD
I thought did a great job on their social media platform.
I was following it on X and they were giving
good updates throughout, and each update made it seem a
little bit more clear that the threat was I wouldn't
say not legit, but it just you know, there was
no reports of anybody actually being shot, which again sounds
(03:41):
like there wasn't even an active aggressor at all, which
is again that's a good thing, but it did lead
to again a lot of people in a situation that
they probably have never been in before, at least hopefully not,
and who knows how it impacts them. Everybody's different. But
when you are running to find your loved ones because
maybe your kid was out there playing basketball and you're
you know, keeping you never if you've never been to
(04:02):
one of the basketball tournaments, because there's many that have
taken place in the in the north wing and the
South wing over there at the Fairgrounds, I mean, you
might know where they are, and then whenever the chaos
happens and everybody's running around, it's easy to get lost.
There were players meeting children interviewed yesterday after the situation
that you know, talked about how scared they were and
(04:22):
that they couldn't find their parents, and again that's understandable
given what happens. So again the good news is that
everybody's okay, but just hate that that's that's where we are,
meaning you can never take those things lightly. And I'm
sure now if you are in that situation, I don't know.
I'm not trying to play psychologists here, but I'm just
(04:42):
curious how many people would be in that situation and assume, well,
I'm sure this is nothing, probably just a false alarm,
because I don't mean, I would imagine most people wouldn't
take it lightly because I don't know how surprised you
can be if something like that did happen. That's just again,
that's unfortunate. It's no longer uncommon to see headlines about
(05:03):
these kind of things. So they're going to resume play
today at the Run Run for the Roses tournament, but
there are some teams that decided to back out. Some
coaches who were here in town recruiting the event that
said that they're gonna going to walk away as well.
So I wouldn't even I'd be foolish to speculate what
this does for the future of the event and it
being in Louisville, because again, this is an isolated thing,
(05:25):
and at the end of the day, I don't really
know how you'd blame how you blame well, I don't know.
I guess that's for other people to decide. But a
big event that brings so many people here and does
so much for our economy, I hate that For many
people who were here, the lasting memory for them, among
many memories, will probably be that situation, because that's not
(05:46):
something you forget if you're there and you're scrambling to
try to find your family and you're trying to figure
out what's going on. You know, the reason that that
it's chaos is because there's belief that there's somebody there
to harm people. So unfortunate, but again glad nobody was hurt.
All right. What I want to get to coming up
here after this next update on traffic and weather. A
lot of people got duped. They think you can go
(06:08):
to Vegas at the casino and play Uno. Now you
can but a very good marketing, very good marketing as
far as how they put that out there, we'll talk
about that and screen time. I can't be the only
parent that is worried that my kids have way too
much time in front of a screen. We'll talk about
some of the findings and some of the things you
could potentially do to find a good balance. Stick with
(06:29):
US Radios Kentucky. It's Morning News with Coffee and Company
on News radioaight forty whas if you were somebody that
saw this headline yesterday and you thought that you were
going to be able to go to Vegas and hit
one of the casinos and gamble on the game Uno,
you've been duped. So here are just two examples of
headlines about this story. Uno gets a wild card entry
(06:51):
into Vegas Casino Classic card game Uno lands in Las
Vegas Casinos. I would have thought the same thing. I
did think the same thing, but it just seemed it
seemed to be just so random. And then I noticed
that it was being cited by some bigger outlets, but
they really didn't give a whole lot of infos So
I thought, well, maybe this is maybe it's not fake news,
(07:11):
but maybe there's maybe there's some exaggeration going on, and
that is exactly what is going on, because it's not
being added added as a traditional wagered casino table game.
Mattel has partnered with Palm Casino Resort to launch the
Uno Social Club, which is an experimental venue that will
have Uno branded suites and lounges, custom Uno game tables
(07:36):
with inroom dealers so Uno Room. Essentially, the Euno Social
Club has led to people then thinking you can actually
go and play Uno as if you're playing poker. And
if the promotion just including included people talking about Uno,
I think it worked, but there's so many people understandably
(07:57):
so that like if those two headlines that I just read,
which by the way, are real, I mean I I
totally would have assumed, well that's wild, but hey, Vegas
is getting creative. But then you think about it, that
didn't make a whole lot of sense. It reminded me
of the movie Vegas Vacation, the National Lampot's movie, with which,
of course I think everybody knows the vacation movies, but
(08:19):
there was a scene where Clark and Eddie end up
in like the low rent casino because they've lost all
their money and he's just trying to He's trying to
win his money back with cousin Eddie Clark Griswold is
and Ellen is she she's she's doing her thing with
Wayne Newton and they end up in this casino. That
(08:42):
is a time at the time as a kid, when
I watched this movie, I thought it was real, but
it clearly isn't. But they had games, and again the
movie is trying to pitch it as just this lowest
type of casino you could get into. But their games
were flip a coin you call it in the air,
heads or tails, or you go to a dealer and
you got to pick a number one through ten. Rock
paper Scissors was one of them. One of them also
(09:03):
was guess which hand a dealer holds something in one
hand and in the movie Clark grissold has to guess
which hand it's in. I mean, again, none of that's real,
by the way. Also, go fish was mentioned as well.
You could play go fish, So that's kind of what
I thought of whenever I was thinking, wait a second,
I knew that wasn't real. I later learned that wasn't
really where you could go and play those games, and
I thought maybe this was the you know the same thing,
(09:24):
and it is. So you know, you don't book your
trip to Vegas and think you're heading to the casino
to play Uno because you can play Uno, but it's not.
It's not. It's they're just gonna get you in this
social club and it's just gonna be nothing but a mirage.
So anyhow, I remember as a kid thinking, Okay, well, yeah,
I don't know how to play Texas hold them or
traditional poker, but yeah, when I get old enough, I'm
(09:46):
gonna go to the casino, I'm gonna play go Fish.
I know, want to play that. Give me a little
old maid gambling going on? Yeah, like, and that actually
would be kind of fun. But there should be a
casino for a juvenile card game. But those I bet
those kind of games though, it would be harder for
the house to win, as you know what I mean,
And that is what they're going to be mindful of, understandably.
So all right, we've got an update of traffigand weather
coming your way. Also we'll get an update on sports
(10:07):
with Scott Fitzgerald. And also I would like to discuss
something I mentioned just a moment ago, as far as
parents and what they think about the amount of time
their kids spend in front of a screen, mostly tablets
and devices, but also television screens as well, because I
know I'm one of many parents that thinks there's a
benefit from my kid being able to utilize technology to
(10:28):
learn a lot of things. But also you don't want
them to become robots. So we'll get to that in
a lot more. Keep it locked right here. It's Kentucky
and it's Morning News on news Radio eight forty whas.
Thank you very much, John Shannon. It is Kentucky Ana's
Morning News with Coffee and Company on news Radio eight
forty whas, Nick Coffee, that's me the company man himself,
John Alden alongside today. And one thing that you and
(10:52):
I are alike many things we are I think alike
with but we didn't have tablets devices phone in front
of our face when we were growing up. You are
about a decade younger than I am, and as you
got older, it was there, but like you didn't have
like an iPad when you were a little kid, right,
Maybe I don't know, maybe I didn't have an iPad.
(11:12):
I remember having a leap Frog pad. Yeah, much different though,
and those were educational and there wasn't a whole lot
you can do other than whatever the leap Frog program
had on it. Right, You weren't surfing the internet, no,
So I I'm glad that I had that. I grew
up in the era that I did, where technology was
cool and we were able to do cool things. The
Internet really kind of exploded and became a thing during
(11:33):
my childhood, and I remember that. I remember very well.
I remember the doing doing sound when you would have
the dial up. Actually, do you remember dialogue? You know
we did have dial use. Yeah, so I was gonna say,
maybe you don't remember that, but yeah, I guess it
probably would have been. Which I feel like the when
you realized what the internet was, and it wasn't on
any device. It was literally a connection through your your
your home phone. I mean I remember not. I mean,
(11:55):
there was such I was so interested to see really
what it was like, you know, I would I remember
as a kid hearing like people describe what it is
and which you can do, and I'm thinking, well how
and then sure enough, now we're all I mean, technology
is a big factor in everything that we do. But anyways,
there's a new study that I guess a survey, I
should say, that's the best way to describe. It's a
survey that says eighty five percent of US parents monitor
(12:20):
screen time for kids under eighteen, and thirty nine percent
want stricter limits, which you know, I get it. As
a parent, I'm thinking, well, wait a second, if you
want that, then do it. You're the parent, You're in charge.
But I'm sure there's there's the balance of you know,
it does keep them occupied, and there are some things
(12:40):
that clearly you know that they enjoy when it comes
to screen time, or there be a tablet, a video game,
a phone, whatever it may be. And you want to
see your kids enjoying things that they like. And I
think there's a lot of things you can I mean,
you can learn a lot of things. You can teach yourself,
teach yourself stuff as a kid that when we were kids,
we didn't, we didn't have the ability to do. But also,
(13:01):
you know, you don't there's not as much social interaction.
And what I think is is a bigger it's just
speaking for myself as a parent, The bigger concern for
me is just what my kids are exposed to, because
that is going to be something that we learn about
over the years, because there's going to be people that
grow up and become adults and they'll be the first
(13:23):
test for us. As far as them having access to
so many things via the Internet and via the tablet
that they have at their home, I mean, well maybe
their cell phone. So you can obviously learn a lot,
you can educate yourself, you can teach yourself how to
do certain things with this technology, but also it can
expose you to things that could have an impact on
(13:44):
you that is not good. I mean, that's one thing
that I don't think. I don't think can be said
enough because a lot of parents, and I guess there
are parents that are younger than even you know myself
and even John that maybe when they were growing up
they had they had much more of a they've they've
they had these tablets and these devices in front of
him at all times. But if you're like me, like
(14:07):
I don't, I don't. I wasn't exposed to a lot
of things because we just didn't have that. It wasn't
a thing at the time, so I didn't know what
I didn't know that makes sense. Well, now, I mean
every now and then my son will end up off
of the YouTube Kids tablet or the YouTube Kids app
on his iPad and end up on YouTube, and a
lot of times, more often than not, he's watching something
that you know, he's watching kids play video games where
(14:29):
he's watching no joke, like old horse races. He's he's odd.
He loves horse racing and it's it's it's it's an
obsession for him. But then sometimes he'll end up on
something not knowing what it is, and I guess he's interested,
and then he'll start crying and it'll be because you know,
something scary happened, and that's that's I mean, if he's
scared that, I don't want that to happen. But you know,
it just reminds me. Light bulb goes off, like wow,
(14:51):
I mean, I guess, really, if I'm not monitoring it,
he could be exposed to a lot of things. So
excuse me. We're much more mindful of it now than
especially that he's getting a little bit older. But I
just you know, who am I to give parenting advice?
But when it comes to just kind of you know,
keeping them preoccupied, keeping them busy, they're not you know,
if you've got siblings, they're not fighting with each other
because they're each in their own world on their iPads. Yeah,
(15:13):
that can be beneficial. And then whenever they don't have
devices and they don't know how to act and they're
whiny and fussy. My kids do that all the time.
I mean, I get it. Sometimes you do it just
to say, okay, right, let's just calm down here, here
you go. So finding the balance as far as being
able to take advantage of the ability to learn and
utilize technology like we didn't have when we were younger,
(15:35):
but also knowing that it may not be for good, right, Like,
there's clearly a lot that you can be exposed to
on the World Wide Web. And this is something that
doesn't really surprise me, but it is. It is certainly
troubling information that this survey says that parents claim that
their family conflicts forty three percent. Yeah, it says that
(15:57):
parent survey. Yeah, it says the eight percent of parents
were concerned, with forty three percent reporting that family CONTUCTI
family conflict, I should say, tied to the excessive screen use, which, again,
you know, if you don't want to hear your parents
arguing or whatever it may be, put your headphones in,
watch your tablet, and get lost in your own world.
So I just don't know. As a parent myself, I'm
(16:19):
now more than ever just trying to be mindful of
things that like my kid could see, that like I
would never see because there was no way for me
to see it. All right, let's get to a quick update.
We'll get you caught up on weather traffic. That of
course is next. And then also yesterday, Andy Basher did
an interview with Meet the Press and was asked about
a potential run for president. We'll let you know what
(16:40):
he had to say right here on. He's ready to
wait forty whas So, the suspect that was shot and
killed by police in Lexton yesterday after killing two individuals
at a church has been identified. Lexning Police Department said
forty seven year old Guy House died from wounds after
three officers shot him. Of course, this was after he
(17:01):
shot an officer after a traffic stop at the near
the Bluegrass Airport and then ended up carjacking someone, only
to then make his way to that church and killed
two innocent people. So we politicize everything. This day and age.
So I'm not surprised that right now, if you just
look up the name Guy House, search the name Guy
House on any social media platform. I'm doing it on
(17:22):
x formerly known as Twitter, and no joke. The first
two posts that I see. One is somebody claiming that
he is a free Palestine Muslim, and then they show
pictures of him. I guess what he's wearing. I assume
they're sharing this as evidence that hey, see he's on
(17:43):
the left, he's a Democrat. And then you also have
another picture and I don't know, I don't know what's real,
but there's another picture of him wearing what appears to
be a Confederate flag hoodie, and it's somebody claiming that's
that's he's maga. And again I don't know what to believe,
because I don't. I still don't really when these things happen.
(18:04):
I don't. I'm not wired, and hopefully I never am.
To just just think, Okay, who can we blame this
on the other can we blame this on the other side,
the other side of the aisle. And none of that
surprises me at all, because that's just where we are
right now. But regardless of what political side he's on
who he voted for. What I think is just really
(18:24):
unfortunate to know is that while doing this and committing
these crimes yesterday that of course took the lives of
two people, an officer injured, and of course he's dead now.
He did this while while being on felony probation. So
this guy, his name is Guy House, and he was
on felony probation when he when this occurred yesterday. So
(18:45):
twenty twenty three arrest for being in possession of a
firearm while being a felon, and he's violated probation numerous times,
including just a few months ago. It looks like so
again I'm when I this is something I'll admit hand,
I was ignorant to how many people are out roaming
the streets that have done a pretty good job. They've
(19:07):
been pretty consistent at showing they break the law. They're dangerous,
they're violent people. And I know that there's a lot
of criticism thrown towards judges who make these decisions, and
I understand that totally, but also, you know, I don't
think it's as easy as well, Okay, nobody should ever
get a second chance and get out there, but also
like if you repeatedly are proving to everyone who you
(19:30):
are and that you are in fact a threat somebody
that is dangerous, there's got to be something done to
believe these people when they tell us who they are.
Is that a good way to describe it? So anyways,
the victim in this, well, he's not a victim. He's
I mean, I guess he was, but technically he probably
when committing the awful acts that he did yesterday, I'm
(19:52):
not sure what the hell was going on in his
brain and I'll never want to relate to that, but
not surprised that law enforcement showed up and did what
they had to do after he took two lives and
of course shot at an officer. So again, his identity
is now known. Forty seven year old guy House. All right,
quick update on traffic and weather is coming your way.
Another update on sports with Scott Fitzgerald coming up as
well in just a few minutes, and we'll get into
(20:14):
it in the eight o'clock hour. I wanted to discuss
the breaking news here as far as the identity being
confirmed of the Lexian shooter, but we'll talk about when
Andy Rasher had to say when He had his interview
yesterday with Meet the Press, was asked about a potential
run at president again. We'll talk about it right here
on news radioaight forty whas
