Speaker 1 (00:02):
Let's get it started, shall we six oh five here
at Kentucky and it's morning news, Coffee and company with
you News Radio eight forty. Whas gross expired milk, I
mean any food that has expired. But I can't think
of something that is grosser when it comes to just
a food that you would stay away from if you

(00:22):
in fact, just thinking on the fly, here, can there
be a common item that.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
People get at the grocery store probably every week?

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Maybe, I don't know, depending on what kind of diet,
your honor what you do, maybe you get milk more
than once a week. I'm not sure, however, that is
probably I think checked more than maybe anything as far
as really popular items that you have in your fridge,
as far as the date, because the thought of it
being I mean, i've had milk that well, Actually, another

(00:52):
think about it, I haven't had a glass of milk.
And I'm not kidding, Scott Fitzgerald. I probably have not
had a glass of milk to drink with a meal
or just to have a glass of milk in fifteen.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Years, seriously, swear hold and I don't.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
I'm not grossed out by milk. It's never once been
something that I want when I'm thirsty, and I honestly
don't eat the kind of foods that would go good
with milk. Like I'm not a big cookie and cake
and snack guy. So yeah, and I don't eat cereal either,
So I'm not anti milk. And I know milk is
in a lot of the food that I eat. My
wife uses it when she makes dinner with a lot

(01:28):
of different items that we have frequently. It's just when
it comes to getting a you know, getting the milk
out of the fridge and pouring me a glass, I
just I rarely ever do it. I do pour milk
often for my kids, and they go through a lot
of milk. They waste a lot of milk to if
I'm being honest with you.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
But I mean I.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Smell it more than I and I don't even look
at the The date can tell me that it's got
like a month before it expires, which is not realistic.
But the smell is what is what is going to
stand out to me. And if it smells even a
tad bit sour, a tad bit funky, it's going in trash.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
You see people all the time they get that with
na Yes, I mean there's no Once you smell that smell,
you can't get it out of there. And to your point,
I think the only other item I would think would
come close to milk would be bread. Yeah it's true
you look at bread, especially in this humid weather, but yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
It's but bread. You bread can pass the eye test
for me. Huh, you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Like, I've had bread that I know is old, but
I do a good, a good check to see if
there's any any signs of molding or anything like that.
And I I've tested it enough to know, Okay, I've
got the eye to I guess determine if this is
going to be a good decision or not. With milk,
I wouldn't even risk it. So JCPS has pulled all
fresh milk after the concerns here. So they've got I mean,

(02:41):
they've admitted that they have They've had to toss some
milk that's expired. There's some students out there that have
said they've been served milk that the you know, the
the date on it is.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Let's see.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
I mean, I thought I read that one student claims
that they had milk that was served to them and
the it's not.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
The expiration date.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
But it's like the best bid eight, isn't that what
it's called something like that. Yep, and it was five
months past. Oh sorry, let me let me let me
clarify this. They served pastry two months past its best
by date and milk that was expired, But it doesn't
actually mention the the you know, how expired that it was.
But they did admit that they've had to toss expired
milk at certain schools, and right now they are meeting

(03:21):
with their vendor to determine how that's happening. But I'm
just I'm thinking about my if I'm a kid and
I'm not paying attention to that, and I drink some
bad milk that's expired and it and it quickly is
evident that this milk has expired. As soon as I
take a drink, I probably would never drink milk again
at school.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Well, usage is gross me. I thought of it, right, No, that.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Makes perfect sense. And riddling me this because and I
wonder and there's probably a good reason for it. I
don't know why. But when you look at like say
a vitamin D milk, the expiration date isn't too far off.
But I bought some fat free milk the other day
and their expiration date was way into the future.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Because I remember, I'm interesting.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
I was asking my wife, I said, how does that happen?
And even she didn't know any Again, I'm sure there's
a logical reason why, maybe in the PAS duration process,
et cetera.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
But man, once you get that, do you ever buy
something at the store and then get home and try to,
like say milk, for example, and drink and then discover
it's been expired, like the store didn't take it off
the shelf.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
No, because I don't. I don't pay attention to that.
And we now do the groceries where they just get
delivered to the house. So you just assumed that they
would check that. My wife, again, she she kind of
takes care of me. I'm one of her kids essentially,
you know, she's the adult in the family check and
all that stuff to see what's expired and what's not.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
But she will, she's really really strict.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
About the dates on anything. And I try to remind her, well,
sometimes that doesn't mean that depending on what it is,
it doesn't mean it's expired. It just means that it's
a best buy and you I think that's what it's.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Called the best Yeah, best by date.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Yeah, And at that point it's really just your judgment,
and I will look at it, smell, depending on what
it is, and make a judgment that's pretty pretty liberal,
whereas she's not. She's I mean, she'll just yeah, if
it's on the if it's on the fence, then she's
she's not gonna take any kind of risk, and she's

(05:10):
probably right.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Are you ever?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Are you ever on the fence with if it's like
I've smelled molt before and I couldn't make up my mind,
Like I'd sit there and smell it for a half
hour because I couldn't make up my.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Mind because if I get any hint and it's just milk,
Milk's the one thing that just grosses me out for
some reason. Anything else, Like let me give you an example.
So we hamburger meat, so we have tacos weekly and
whenever the this was I think a couple of weeks ago,
and some people may judge us that's fine, maybe I
should admit this, But the best by date was a

(05:39):
day before we made it, and she was on the
fence kind of thinking, Now I don't know, and I'm like,
it's fine. You wouldn't even notice any difference if it
said the best by date was a week from now.
So she got it out, told me ahead of time,
she's putting in the pan, and then she's making her
decision and she went with it and we lived.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
That's right, that's exactly you know.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
And that's because that's I'm glad you said that, because
that's why going to go with that is. You know,
sometimes they do say the sell by dates are strictly
that the cell by date, so there is a certain
amount of time afterwards that the product is still good.
And yeah, to your point, I think we're all pretty
good judges of character.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
And then you learn the hard way sometimes and then
you'll maybe adjust how you make a decision because you
risked it and it wasn't worth it. But look, you
know me, I'm a big badass risk taker, right right.
I mean, my wife she likes the bad boys. I'll
eat a meal where we're going past the best by date.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Oh, go all, go all anchorman and just guzzle that
milk in the phone mode.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Dude, I'm telling you man something about something, something about
expired sour mial, bad milk man. So that was a
student that had one of those rotten milks, I would
just want juice the rest of the way. That'd be
what I would pick. But right, let's get to a
quick update on Trabick and weather. We've got an update
for you on the hand breakfast going on to the
State Fair. But also there's another another I guess food

(06:55):
item that is prepared and there's a competition to see
who's got the best every year at the State Fair.
But the State Fair those who judge, they were not impressed.
They did not award a first prize, which tells you
the competition's got to be better next year. We'll talk
about that next Right here, our new's ready to wait
forty whas.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
We'll see if.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Broadbent B and B Foods can go for the three
peat as the grand champion ham. So the Kentucky State
Fair is going on and this morning is the sixty
first annual Country Hand Breakfast and Auction at the State Fair,
bringing out the politicians, the traditions, and a lot of
money that is going to a good cause. Right this
money that has donated when you hear the price, which,

(07:34):
by the way, last year and I popping ten point
five million dollars is what the Grand Champion hand went for.
All that money goes to Kentucky charity. So clearly it's
awesome to see these people come together and put up
that kind of money, and it's a great example, maybe
the best example I could think of on the fly
here of people just showing their generosity and clearly having

(07:57):
the wealth to be generous and a lot of people
is one of those things that as I've gotten older,
I've more so felt that we shouldn't just well, yeah,
what's that to them?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
They got a billion bucks? Would they give a couple million?

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Like?

Speaker 2 (08:10):
People don't have to do that, you know.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
I think that's that's just something that when you consider
what a million dollars is to an insanely wealthy person
compared to what a million dollars is to you, I mean, yeah,
that's it's easier for them to do it, but it's
not something they have to do. So again, last year
it was Joe and Kelly Craft that put up ten
point five million, and again the ham came from the

(08:34):
top Dog right now that has broad bent B and
B Foods. So we'll see if they can go for
the three peet but this is something that I gotta admit,
the more I read about it, the more I like it.
I guess, the more I consider about it. But there's
not really a whole lot to read. John Shannon had
it in his newscast yesterday, but there was no blue
ribbon given for Brownies this year at the Kentucky State Fair.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
I got a text for my buddy on that this morning.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Each year, thousands of Kentuckians enter the baked Goods and
Crafts and you know they want to get that coveted
blue ribbon. But this year's Brownie competition, no first place
prize was awarded. Out of the forty nine entries, only
thirty seven made it into judging, and the best anyone
got was a red ribbon for second place. That is
the folks that judge, making it quite clear there's a
standard to be met and nobody was able to meet

(09:17):
that standard this year. And giving them something to work
after next year. I mean, I don't know why, but
I kind of love this. It's like letting them know, hey, look,
you guys did decent, but there's not one that's worthy
of the top ribbon. So try it again and come
back next year. And I bet next year there'll.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Be more entries. Right.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
I think this honestly will make people think like I
never eve thought about entering my brownies.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
But I'll come, coming for that, coming for that ribbon.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
I love it competitive stuff here all right, We've got
trafficking weather updates on the way. Another sports update coming
up to right here on news Radio eight forty whas
we're just a couple of minutes away from you. Next
update on traffic and weather. Bobby Ellis Wild tell us
how the road ways are looking here on a Thursday morning.
We got a nice break from the brutal heat yesterday,
and we'll get another few of some good temperature starting

(10:01):
early next week. But it does look like after today
the heat's coming back for really Friday and the rest
of the weekend, but again next week Monday Tuesday looking
beautiful outside. We're talking highs that don't even reach eighty degrees,
which is just amazing to say. But we're here, We're
getting there, We are getting there towards the end of August.
Here football season getting started. Obviously, Week zero in college
football is really not even an appetizer.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
What do you call it? Like it's a roll? Yeah,
you know, like a dinner roll.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
That's a good way to put it, Nick.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Not only that is like the peanuts at Texas Roadhouse
before you get any appetizer.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Right, That's exactly right.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
And not only that, Nick, tomorrow too will feature a
full complement of high school football. Oh hell yeah, that
we're going to run that down. I'm looking forward to
getting back into that as well.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Too, And I think just about everybody makes their debut
tomorrow in high school football across the state.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
I think there actually is a game tonight here in Louisville.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
I'm not sure if that's because of scheduling or what
it is as far as just the venue, but most
schools will get it started tomorrow night under the lights
across the and I'm looking forward to talking about some
of the big matchups tomorrow once we get there. Now,
when it comes to the college football side of things,
next week's when it really gets rolling. But again week zero,
as we get closer, I mean, I'm excited to know

(11:15):
that we have real football and there's in fact going
to be games that do count, and I'm looking forward
to betting on it with DraftKings. However, I think this
year is a reminder for me that you know of
what it actually is, to where I'm not convincing myself
that we're actually getting the full college football weekend experience
because it's really it's a tease or I guess maybe again,
the better way to describe it as it's like it's

(11:35):
the peanuts at Texas Roadhouse, right, because it's not even
an appetizer, but it's something until you get there, right,
And that's what week zero provides, and it's better than nothing, right.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
That's exactly right.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
You big college game day guy, you like to get
up on Saturday morning, turn that on.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
I like the background noise that College Game Day provides.
I don't really get I don't really get into it throughout,
but having it on is a nice way to just
get the day star and it really helps me with
just more than anything, just kind of get a look
at what the day looks like as far as the schedule,
and I like when they make their picks. Yeah, I
think that's interesting. So yeah, we'll be there soon enough.

(12:10):
Looking forward to it. All right, We've got another update
of trafficking weather coming up right here right now. Also
another sports update coming your way, and at some point
I want to talk about the controversy that Cracker Barrel
is facing as they've redesigned their logo and really switching
things up.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
And look, they've got every right to do that.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
I just don't know what their changes that they're making
they are expecting.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
To result in. But that's just me.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
There's people in positions that make those decisions that are
way more qualified to do it than someone like myself.
But Cracker Barrel completely going with like an identity switch,
I don't.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Know if that's I don't know that that's a good
move from them, but we'll see. We'll get to it later.
