Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is six oh five here Kentucky and this morning
news coffee and company with you News Radio eight forty
whas So last week I said it with confidence, and
I guess it was true. The college football season was
upon us because we did have a game week for
a handful of teams. But everybody gets it going this weekend,
including the local teams. Louisville of course getting started against

(00:20):
KU Kentucky hosting Toledo, a team that you should always
just expect to be right. You're an SEC program, they
are Toledo, they're in the MAC, but they're the team
from the MAC that you would least want to play.
And also, I would say if you are Toledo and
you are looking at a realistic opponent from the best
conference in college football, and we're talking about vulnerable opponents,

(00:44):
I would say Kentucky would be would be the program
that might get you salivating a little bit. I mean,
they may not be the worst team in the SEC
this year, but Toledo last year played Mississippi State, went
on the road to Starksville, and they beat them bad.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
So they already got that one out of the way.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
And now they're looking to maybe go I guess, two
straight years with a victory against an SEC team, which
has got to be something that is insanely rare for
programs of that level. So again, we'll get your set
throughout the week. Obviously, I know fans are excited to
get out and just enjoy college football season and everything
that comes with it, including tailgating. And I'm telling you
if the weather this week is what we get throughout

(01:21):
the football season, which we won't of course, obviously the
football season goes all the way up till Thanksgiving, but man,
what a great start we could be in for because
we're talking about high this Saturday here in Louisville specifically,
we've got a high of seventy nine degrees with sunny
skies some partly you know, partly cloudy at times it
looks like but who cares. I mean, we're talking seventy
nine degrees as the high and no rain at least

(01:44):
expected as of right now. It does not get much
better than that. And I'm watching the game that took
place over the weekend in Ireland between Iowa State and
Kansas State, and I just and it did seem as
if I was not alone when it comes to just
the oppostion here, like who are we doing this for?
I don't even think the people in Ireland really care
as much as maybe you might mean, Like, I'm sure

(02:07):
there are some that enjoyed it, but like who benefits?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Who's the ultimate winner here?

Speaker 1 (02:12):
In those two teams kicking off the season in Ireland
whenever they are relatively close to one another and could
have played a neutral site I don't know, halfway between
the two schools, and yet they do it in Ireland
and Kansas State, by the way, lost a home game.
They didn't they had less a less hope, They won
less home game on their schedule because of this, this
being played in Ireland. So you know, I'm sure there's

(02:34):
more to it than I would ever know, but it
just kind of felt like it felt flat to me.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Scott.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
As far as the observation, I'm thinking, Okay, yeah, there's
a lot of fans that are fired up there that traveled,
but like.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Did we need to do this? No?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
And in fact, I thought of you this weekend.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
I was scrolling through, I watched a little bit of
and then I switched to tell you what I thought
of the game. I ended up switching over to the
NFL preseason, but the because I wanted to say the
Bengals gave a no look at all, but I just
wanted to see what was there. But as I was
scrolling through social media, I came across Irish radio was
running a bit on the fans in the comments section.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Well basically the Irish are like, this is cute.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
But these are people that live in Ireland traveled over.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yeah, yeah, and they're like, when do you guys leave it?

Speaker 4 (03:16):
And so, in fact, I was telling my wife at
dinner last night that apparently these bars and pubs wanted
to bring people in, so they went to Amazon or
wherever they go to shop, and they probably typed in
literally Kansas state flag, Iowa state flag, and they ordered
them well above the bars and pubs to attract business.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
They had the literal state flag.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
They didn't understand that there's there's a flag for the
school and then there's you know, the state, and yeah,
they're probably thinking that it's odd. You know, maybe if
they understand college football and sort of the big you know,
big big level college sports in America, maybe they get it.
But yeah, when they think Iowa state flag, I mean
I get it. They would never think about a school
they would think of just the state.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Right right, because that didn't.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
But it's it's a perfect example of like they they're
not they're not waiting on the edge of their seat
to figure out when the next big twelve college football
game is coming their way. And I mean it's I
mean again, I'm sure they brought a lot of Americans
over from that are fans of those schools, and maybe
they had a good experience overall. It just to me it,
you know, just again, who really benefited from it overall?

(04:23):
Was my biggest takeaway. Now I'd say the biggest, the
biggest I say, the biggest loser here in the whole situation.
I'm not calling these individuals losers as human beings, but
what a rough situation. Kansas State the favorite, a team
that I think most expected to simply be better than
Iowa State. They they couldn't get it done. And the
video that went viral after the game, I mean, it's

(04:45):
something that if you just read it initially, which I did,
I thought, well, there's no way that's true. That's just
somebody having some fun on the internet, but ended up
being true. The quarterback Avery Johnson. After the game, there
was a video that went viral of two fans fighting
each other. Turns out it is the brother and the
father of the Kansas State quarterback, so a family melee
takes place to where I mean, I mean it was

(05:07):
a real fight too, by yeah, but yeah. The video
shows that the brother and the father in a fistfight
and other fans trying to get involved. But Mark and
Anthony Johnson admitted that it was in fact then in
the video, and they've admitted that bickering ended up turning
into an all out brawl. So the families did release
a statement apologizing to Kansas State fans and alumni, calling

(05:29):
it quote senseless bickering that escalated, and they promised that
it won't happen again. But their quarterback, good player in
its third season, through for twenty seven hundred yards twenty
five touchdowns last year, which I believe was a program
record for them, So I mean, I feel bad for him,
the young man who did not have a great game.
They come up with a loss, and then all that
anybody's talking about after the game is a fight that

(05:51):
took place. Only for them people to realize that it
I mean, it's you can't make this up to be honestly,
it's just a very very unusual situation. And the brother
and the the probably got a little too drunk and
and and you know, clearly things did get out of hand.
But that's just got to be so embarrassing for the
quarterback and really the family overall. Sure, we talk about
a way to get your season off to a terrible start.

(06:12):
Go to Ireland, lose a game that you're favorite in,
and of course it's a conference game, so there's a
lot on the line here. And then the story afterwards
is the quarterbacks family fought each other. It's just a
terrible way to get your season started.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
And then and then you have to the school probably
is not happy about it.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Oh sure, it's just a bad look all the way around.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Yeah, and so you got to deal with that angle.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
But you know, I'm glad fans had a good time,
you know it always Yeah, I haven't been to Ireland.
There's never a bad day. It's best trip I made.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Never been. But man, it's a bucket list.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Oh it's it's beautiful, and it's it's a great place
to visit. I just don't think it's to your point.
I don't think it's a great set here college we.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Could maybe not bring another college football game to them,
and I think they'll be just fine. I think they'll
be okay, they'll probably not going to be complaining.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
But no, no, but if you bring the NFL, they'll
be happy, or of course, or.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
You bring the NBA.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
The NBA does very well in Europe, so if you
can bring any of those two, they'll be.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
And we know we love it here. We don't need
to be testing it out elsewhere.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Keep it here for us.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
We love it right, Thanks Scott. Let's get to a
quick update of traffick and weather as we move forward.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
Here.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
It is six twelve.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Kentucky had this morning news news radio Wait forty whas
the Kentucky State Fair came to an end on Sunday.
And I can tell you I got my fair fix
for the year because we took the kids last Monday
and had a good time, and then we'd planned on
going Saturday this past Saturday, which we did, but without
the kids. We had some friends that were planning a

(07:33):
night out with no kids to have a good time,
and we did exactly that. But Friday, we didn't have
any plans in the evening and I just thought, you
know what, Like, why not just take the kids back
to the fair. It only happens once a year. We
know they have fun there. There's a lot to do,
a lot to see. So I mentioned before the fair
got started how I'm a super fan of the Kentucky
State Fair, and I can tell you after three trips

(07:57):
to the fair this twenty twenty five edition, I am
just as big of a fan. So much to see,
so much to do, and I mean it's just I mean,
you could walk around for hours and I feel like
not get bored. And obviously you know you're gonna have
to spend some money if you want to buy some
beers and taste all the different food items that they have.
But yeah, the fair was awesome and it sounds like
for the most part that things went well. I mean,

(08:19):
I don't know the exact number as far as attendance
compared to other years. I'm sure that information will come
out at some point, but yeah, I will say the
crowds they had, from what I could tell, seemed to
be Again I'm not gonna act like it was a
record breaking crowd because I wouldn't know. But when we
got there Saturday afternoon, they were no longer letting any
went into the main gate just because I mean, I

(08:41):
guess they were at capacity as far as where you
could end up parking from that entrance. So yeah, I
loved it and I can't wait for it to come
back next year. And it being there really lets you
know just how much planning goes into it, where yes,
it is a once a year, ten day thing, but
throughout the calendar year. Man, there's a lot that goes
into putting this thing on. And you know, from my perspective,

(09:02):
I think they did a pretty good job this year.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Yeah, And I think one of my favorite things to
do when we go to the fair nick is walked
through the different counties where they're there in the center
and you walk through and you get a chance to
really see Kentucky and parts of Kentucky. Oh yeah, that's right.
And I mentioned you to my wife and daughter. They
went Saturday. I stayed home with the puppy, but they
went Saturday and said exactly what you said. They got
to the main gate, it was closed. They said the

(09:25):
crowds were huge on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, and I just I don't know, I have It's
not like I learned this at the fair. But it's
I guess a reminder. I really love the state of Kentucky,
and coming from the sports background, is clearly the rivalry
is huge. There's a lot of people in Louisville, and look,
take the ufl uk component out of it, there are
a lot of people that just identify more so as

(09:47):
being a littlevillion and they don't really feel like the
state of Kentucky necessarily as a whole is real reflective
of them and where they live. Which, again, let's be real,
loivel is a much different city than the majority of
the cities.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
In this state.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
But I've always just been someone that loves the state
of Kentucky. And you get to see a lot of
the culture and a lot of the things that make
it great on full display at the Kentucky State Fairs.
So yeah, I tell you what, I can't wait for
it to come back next year, and I'm sure it'll
be great again. All Right, let's get an update of
traffic and whether we'll see how the roadways are looking
here as we get the week started. Also, if you're

(10:21):
listening for some if you're looking for some good news
when it comes to the forecast, I think you're gonna
like what you hear coming up from Suzanne Horgan. This
was a story that John mentioned in his newscast from
a little bit earlier, and I would imagine a lot
of you have probably already heard about it because it's
one of those things that doesn't just make news here
in the state, but also just across the country, because
it's a scary sign and we have a lot of

(10:43):
scary signs as far as just I mean, it's gun violence,
but I mean it's just I don't know, it's society
where you have shootings taking place. I mean, you never
want shootings to take place anywhere, but having them take
place during a high school football game is a scary
thing to think about. And the visual from what we
saw in Mayfield, Kentucky on Friday night where the broadcast

(11:05):
by the way they have and by the way, it
sounds like a lot of high school teams now have
their own way of streaming the games on their YouTube
channel or something like that. And there was a crew
that was doing the game on Friday at Mayfield High
School and they realized that somebody had said shots fired,
and certainly there was a shot that was fired, and

(11:25):
you see just the panic of players and just the
fans and attendance and just it's it's just one of
those things that if you've never been in a situation,
you just don't know how you'd react.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
You don't know how scared you'd be.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
And unfortunately, I have been in a situation where you
realize somebody has a gun, somebody has fired a shot.
This is I mean, it puts a fear into you
that may stick with you forever. I mean I don't
say that to be dramatic, but I mean if you're
just doing whatever, it may be, enjoying dinner, watching a
high school football game, and then you realize, oh, somebody

(12:05):
here has fired off a shot, and you don't know
if it's because there's an altercation going on, you don't
know if it's because they're a deranged individual that just
wants to come and commit some senseless, horrific act of
violence and kill a bunch of people. I mean, unfortunately,
that's happened enough to where I feel like we are now,
and again, you just don't know till you're there. But
it wouldn't shock me if there's a lot of people who,

(12:25):
as soon as they realize what's going on, again without
having all the details. They just know that somebody's fired
a gun and a place that they would have never
expected it. You probably have a level of oh, am,
I am I at a place where we're about to
have something awful happen that'll be remembered forever, because again,
it happening at any point is awful. But clearly, let's

(12:49):
be real, you now cannot be as surprised when you
turn on the news or you check for whatever, and
you know it's just it happens and doesn't make it
any less awful. But yeah, you can talk Mayfield, Kentucky
at War Memorial Stadium. There was a shooting and they
did end up arresting a fourteen year old, but a
fight broke out in the parking lot next to the stadium,

(13:09):
and during that altercation that's when a fourteen year old
suspect pulled a gun and shot an adult victim. The
man was hitting the arm and upper torso and was
later airlifted out of the state for treatment, and that
victim is now listed in stable conditions. So again, video
from the game, you could see players, coaches, referees scrambling
to get off the field. As clearly word spreads fast
when something like that happens and their shots fired. So

(13:32):
police processed the scene, collected evidence, and they're still investigating
that right now. And the mayor of Mayfield, Kathy Oan,
did issue a statement praising the quick response of first responders, coaches,
and staff, while urging units. He quote, this is not
the face of our community. We will remain as always
Mayfield and Graves County strong. So again, I wish that

(13:54):
was a super surprising thing to hear about, but it's not.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Yah.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
In further validation, Nick, did this can happen anywhere?

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Yeah, oh yeah, you know, I.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
Think many of us when we first heard the news,
we're thinking Mayfield's probably the last place that you would
think you'd have a shooting at a high school football game.
So we're just reminded that, you know, violence, it's not
just here in Louisville.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
It's not a West End thing.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
It can happen anywhere in the city, anywhere, anytime, and
now around the states.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
And again it's certainly not it's not good news by
any means, but you're right as far as just I mean,
this is this is another this is example.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
Of youth gun violence.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
Right.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
It's a fourteen year old kid that has a gun.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
So you know, I know, clearly it's been a huge
issue for us here in Louisville, but I guess we're
not alone, which again that's not good. It's awful that
this happens in general. But yeah, just a scary situation.
And I mean, again, I know I sound super dramatic
and like, you know, because at the end of the day,
it sounds as if the person who was shot is
going to be okay, and it could have been a
lot worse. And again the praise that that you heard

(14:52):
there from the from the mayor of Mayfield for those
first responders. I mean, I think everybody handled the situation
as good as possible and they're not going to probably
play victim to But I just what I try to
bring to this conversation anytime these things happen is that
there will be people just because everybody's wired. Different things
affect people differently that when they think of high school
going to a high school game, they'll remember the fear

(15:13):
they had when they have let's say they were forty
yards from where the shot took you know, where the
shot shooting took place. I mean that can put a
level of fear and helplessness in you. That can be
a traumatic experience. In fact, it's a traumatic experience. Again,
others deal with it differently, but nobody thinks about that
when they fire off a gun shot, you know what
I mean. Clearly, this was an altercation that led to
somebody getting shot. But just because we now know what

(15:37):
can happen with people that just get a hold of
guns and do unthinkable things. When you're just living your
life and you hear a gun shot, I mean that
that fear of oh is this am I Am I
going to be one of the next victims to just
be a you know, a victim of somebody wanting to
for reasons that you know make no sense ever but
commit a mass shooting. So yeah, glad to see that
at the end of the day, things are going to

(15:58):
be okay down there, but a scary, scary situation and
not the way you want to kick off the start
of a high school football season, especially in a place
like Mayfield where they I mean they're they're they're pretty successful.
I mean, that's a that's a program that last I checked.
As far as the level of what they are, I'm
not sure if they're three A, four A or whatever
it is. Maybe it's smaller than that, but you know,
there's there's a.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Big crowd there.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
You could see the video if you've if you've checked
it out. I mean, they had a lot of people
on hand, and of course a lot of people probably
impacted by that for a long time. All Right, let's
get anup date of Travick in weather as we roll along.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Here.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
It's Kentucky and it's Morning News on news radio WA
forty whas. Good morning Kentucky, A happy Monday, Cy, thanks
for hanging out with us here as we get the
week started, Kentucky, Anda's morning News, coffee and company with you.
And one thing that I have found genuinely fascinating, I
think that's the best way to describe my whole take
on this. It's been fascinating to see the back and

(16:48):
forth in regards to what's going on in Washington, DC,
because what I can't quite understand is that the violent
crime is heading in the right direction in I guess
recent weeks, and the fighting is should should Donald Trump
be able to take credit for that? And it's led

(17:09):
to people questioning, okay, just how real is the data
as far as the crime rates and all that kind
of stuff. But what I can't understand what fascinates me
is that regardless, like, isn't it good that things are
getting better, why does it matter so much as far
as who should be able to take.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
Credit for it?

Speaker 1 (17:25):
I mean, and this has always been something that I
guess really since we've and again Washington, DC is certainly
a place where we've seen it firsthand, where they can't
seem to get their violent crime under control, and maybe
they just are in denial about it so much so
that there's been some allegations that like maybe they've been
doctoring the data as far as how violent things are.

(17:45):
But like you're just if you're just average citizen in
the DC area, do you care who gets credit? Aren't
you just happy to know that things are getting better
and your streets are safer? I mean, I really, as
someone who doesn't see things always as it's got to
be one side of the aisle or the other, I
just kind of see it for what it is. I mean,

(18:06):
this is good. Like I see people mocking, well, hey, we'll.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Better watch out.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
It'll be your city next where Trump sends in the
National Guard, and I'm thinking, Okay, is that gonna make
it safer?

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Bring them all in.

Speaker 1 (18:18):
I mean, what's the problem here, Like I, it's it's
the lack of awareness from people that just simply can't
accept that something that that that Donald Trump decided to
do might have been good. It's just again, I mean,
if you can, and I know it's hard for some
to view anything without seeing it through the political lens,
but I mean, regardless, things are getting better, they're improving,

(18:42):
and if if you know, if.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
The well, okay be better, watch out. Uh he'll he'll have.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
National Guard Roman, the Roman your street soon. Okay, if
it makes this place safer, then bring them on down.
Like I just to me, I don't what do you mean?
It's just such a back and forth about out. I mean,
it's just it's not about actual results for anybody, it
seems anymore. It's about who can claim is winning, who

(19:08):
won anything to own the other side or get a
get a leg up in the in the endless you know,
back and forth debate about you know, politics, and I
get it that'll never change, But I don't know this,
this DC thing just seems to be a real example
of you know, you clearly couldn't get it done on
your own, it seemed, and now things are better, and

(19:29):
instead of just like acknowledging it, or even not acknowledging it,
just like being happy to know that things are better,
it's just I don't know, I know you got if
you don't even have to be paying that close attention
to know what I'm talking about here. Clearly, now that
things are better, you've got folks wanting to say, well, actually,
what Trump is doing, he's he's taking credit for some
things we already implemented that are now actually getting good results. Well,

(19:52):
and I don't, I mean, I don't necessarily believe that,
but regardless, there's some people that are just happy to
know that they may be safer regardless of what is
being done. They're happy that they're safer. And if I
was in DC, that would be me. But there's some
that maybe are angry to know that their streets are
safer because it might have meant that Trump did something
that they can't criticize. But anyways, that's how I see it.
We've got trapping and other updates coming your way. Also
