Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome in.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
It is Kentucky and his morning news coffee and company
with you here on news radio eight forty w h
as a busy, busy weekend here in Louisville has concluded,
and now we start another week, and I'm happy to
be here with you, Nick coffee. That's me Scott Fitzgerald
alongside John Shannon Is He's alongside as well as say
we will have you four up for the next four
hours as you will get what you have come to
(00:22):
expect here each morning on news radio eight forty WHS.
We'll get you caught up on traffic, also get you
caught up on the forecast as far as traffics.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
So far, so good. A couple of disabled.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Vehicles, but it doesn't look as if we've got any
real delays thus far.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
And let's keep that.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Let's hope that that stays the same. I learned not
to not to mess with trying to predict a good
morning because it was I think it was last week
where I had really highlighted that we were off to
a great start, and then I think maybe five minutes
goes by Scott and then we.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Weren't off to r right been things were different.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
We had a lot of a lot of delays, so
it's gonna do what it's gonna do, and we're just
gonna be here to tell you what that is.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
You have a good weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
We'll start it out that way, boy, busy oh man
for you.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
And it was just a busy Louisville weekend with louder
than life of course in Louisville football back after the
bye week, good enough weather to where I'm sure folks,
as the fall weather and the cool weather is on
the way eventually, people are still trying to make the
most of the warm weather. But yeah, I had a
lot going on throughout the entire weekend, which was great,
but it went by really fast. And that's the thing
(01:27):
and those that's that's the downside of weekends. They don't
last long enough. No.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
I like that rain yesterday though, once it finally came in,
it was nice.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Well, it was nice, and I was expecting it to
provide a you know, a cool off, and maybe it
did as far as just the actual temperature. But we
went for a for a walk, I guess not long
after the rain had stopped around the neighborhood, and you know,
I'm not complaining, but it was more humid than I
was expected, I think, but that's just because of because.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Of the rain.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
But we've got rain this week.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I don't know if that's you know, we'll see if
that's actually what ends up taking place. But if you
look at your forecast for the week, rain is expected
many days here, and you know, I'll give you, I'll
give you what what. A lot of folks say, maybe
we could use it, right, I don't know. My neighborhood
has a lot of lawns that look as if maybe
they could use a couple of days of rain.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
I did well.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
To your point, I went out and I had to
trim it up Friday. It is nice though, because earlier
this year I felt like I was cutting jamuji. It
was just it was that wet, thick grasp. But then
I cut Friday and it was just easy.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
It was a breeze.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
So to your point, we did get it.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
It is going to start to hopefully cool down now,
at least from all the reports that I mattle, have
more throughout the morning, but we're in this train of
rain that's going to occur with this now it's been
a light hurricane season that's had a lot to do
with it.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, I mean it's it's to say to see where
we are here on September twenty second, I mean, what
is this our last like full week of the month
of September. To me, that's just that's crazy to think about,
but here we are. October is not far away. So yeah,
I'm looking forward to this morning though, because there's a
lot to react from the weekend on the sports side, certainly,
(02:58):
obviously a lot of Than Life is wrapped up, and
I just want to kind of do a little bit
of a rundown as far as just the amount of
people that were here in Louisville specifically over the last
two weeks for these two events. And you know, it's
tough to know any exact numbers as far as how
much money was spent with our local businesses, but certainly
a lot of it. And I thinks this continues to
(03:22):
only grow. I mean, these events aren't new, by the way,
but I mean think about where these things are going
to be in five six years. I mean that's it's
become a destination spot for folks, especially the Louder than
Life crew, because it's just again, there's not many events
like that so this was the year. For some reason,
it really hit me that this is a like there
are people from across the planet that if they ever
(03:44):
get to Louisville for anything, it might be for this,
or of course, you know the Kentucky Derby.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
So they were in mass downtown.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
I came back to do the Cardinal postgame show Saturday,
and I can tell you they were all over downtown.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I wouldn't be shocked if when we get a number,
we learned that this brought substantially more people than Bourbon.
And that's not to say one's better than the other.
It's sure people will you, just there's not as many
opportunities to catch something like what Louder than Life is.
So yeah, hopefully those enjoyed themselves. We did have a
brief delay for them yesterday because of weather, but it
didn't last very long at all, and they were able
to get back out there and finished drunk. So right,
(04:17):
good stuff, all right, We got a busy, busy morning again,
a lot to get to.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
We'll get to that coming up. On the other side.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Thousands upon thousands people there in Arizona, as Charlie Kirk.
They had the service yesterday in Arizona. Certainly a lot
was said by many folks there that'll be talked about.
So again we're loaded. Hope you stick with us. Your
first update of traffic and weather is right here, right
now on news Radio eight forty whas it is toime
sevent seen here at news Radio eight forty whas. So
(04:42):
right now looks as if there is a disabled vehicle
on sixty five I believe that is sixty five north
at Fern Valley, but right now right shoulder is blocked.
So nothing nothing substantial just yet. But any you know,
disabled vehicle on the side of the road, can can
it least caused people to slow down, do some rubber necking,
(05:02):
and then you know, of course cause potential issues. So
we'll keep you updated as best we can throughout the morning.
But real quick, the event yesterday in Arizona not really
any surprise as far as just the amount of folks
that showed up, the amount of coverage that you saw
there for the Charlie the Charlie Kirk funeral, I mean
tens of thousands of people. It was at State Farm
(05:23):
Stadium in Arizona. And the I mean we're talking Trump
jd vance elon Musk, which not real. I mean, I
wouldn't have predicted, it wouldn't have been something I was
thinking about. But whenever these two were at each other's
at each other's throats elon Musk and Trump and you
had a middle school type fight on social media between
(05:47):
people who were friends, and then they were not, And
then I guess now they are being cordial with one another.
So it's not a surprise that they have essentially made
up to at least be respectable to one another at
a funeral. But yeah, just a again, you could have
told me there were double the people there, and I
really wouldn't have been surprised, just because clearly you can
tell this is I mean, Charlie Kirk. Not only did
(06:08):
he have such an impact on so many people, there
are many people that probably and this is just this
is this is just life. When someone passes away, especially
in a tragic way, you're gonna learn a lot about
him that you maybe didn't know. I mean, I don't
know how you I don't know how you counter that,
but there's something to be said about, Yeah, because when
(06:28):
someone loses their life, and that's the one time when
somebody is going to talk about the good things, And
I think that's just the human nature for people to
do that.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
You'll you'll learn more and.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Kind of wish, like, hey, I maybe maybe maybe I
wish I would have known a little more about this
guy when he was alive. And I'm not speaking from
any personal perspective. It's just I'm not at all surprised
that there are so many people that really didn't know
a whole lot about Charlie Kirk other than just who
he was. They saw him when they were scrolling through
TikTok or Instagram, at these debates that he would have
at colleges across the country, and now that of course
he's been the most talked about human being on the
(06:59):
planet the last couple of weeks, he probably has gathered
many new fans and people who appreciated him that really
didn't know when he was alive. So again, I'm not
at all surprised to see the turnout that that that
was there at Arizona, Right, And.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Well, that's and I think you speak to you speak
well there, Nick, because we often do that when someone passes,
and you hear the old adage it says, hey, listen,
why do we wait to say all these things about
people until they're gone.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
And I think that's one of those things that it's
just almost kind of impossible to truly counter that, right
because you're not in that state of mind of thinking
of somebody in that context as far as like when
they're gone, because I mean, and you shouldn't because if
you do that, then you're not living in the moment
and enjoying it, right. I guess what I've told myself
is that you really like there's certain things in life
that I know that I am at times way more
(07:47):
than I would ever want to.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
I'm taking for granted.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
But I don't know how to counter that, because if
I sit around and just constantly think, hey, this is
the best, like my kids. My kids are at an
age now where gave him bass last night, and there's
like a smell when I put when they're freshly clean
and I put their pajamas on and getting ready for bed.
I know in twenty years I'll miss that smell and
if I overthink, and then I'm not living in the moments.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Right.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
However, if you know, if I just completely ignore it,
then I'll you know, so I don't know, I don't
know how you counter that if you got any ideas,
please let me know. But yeah, I'm sure there's many
that you know, Hey, that guy was he was in
my town. I wish I would have gone and seen him.
He would have been really powerful to see. So I'm
sure there's many like that. So again, his wife talked yesterday,
of course, as you would expect, and some powerful comments
(08:29):
from her, and and I can't I can't relate, would
never want to relate to what that family is going through.
But for her to make it quite clear that she's
already has forgiveness for the suspected killer is a powerful thing,
to say the least. I think a lot of folks
hear that and wonder would they be able to have
that level of compassion in those circumstances. And first of all,
(08:49):
you'd never want to know, right, You never want to
know what you do in that situation because you never
want to be in that situation. But they are, and
I feel like, I mean I was. I was pretty
touched by what she said, to be honest with you,
just because I don't, you know, under any circumstance, I
don't know how if I would be able to be
in that in the position she's in as far as
how she's carried herself and whatnot. So again that'll be
a that'll be a big talking point today as far
(09:11):
as just not here but nationally, as far as what
what what that was yesterday. But also you know some
things that that Trump said that clearly some folks are
going to be upset about, which hey, that's that's how
it works. We've got trafficking weather updates on the way. Also,
we've got a sports update coming your way, some real
scary news coming out yesterday at Churchill Down. So Scott's
going to talk about that with us next right here
our news radio eight forty WHAS. Here on a Monday morning,
(09:35):
it is coffee and company with your news radio eight
forty WHAS. Take us with you wherever you go. Listen
live at whas dot com. You can also listen live,
of course, on the iHeartRadio app. So I I feel like,
as a Louisville fan, we have been robbed of one
fourth or maybe one third actually of a college football season.
(09:55):
I say that as a fan that is is done
pretending like I can get super excited about watching my
team play teams like Eastern Kentucky Bowling Green State in
James Madison, who knows. Maybe they're solid for who they are,
but James Madison, when you say that to a lot
of fans, they think, okay, is that a person is
(10:16):
a team, So no disrespect to them. But Louisville will
go a month before they play anybody really that's expected
to challenge them at all. And they got by Bowling
Green State on Saturday and didn't really It never felt
like they weren't gonna win comfortably. But you find yourself nitpicking, wondering, Okay,
should should we have past protection issues here with Bowling
(10:40):
Green State a MAC team? Should we have this many
silly penalties? Why is it so sloppy? And in my opinion,
we'll find out eventually just where this team is. But
it's almost impossible to truly know where you are. If
you are encouraged because you know they're undefeated, knock yourself out.
I have no issue with you feel you know, fill
(11:01):
whatever way you want, but if you feel that way
or the opposite of oh, I know they're undefeated, but man,
I'm not really visually seeing a team that I feel
like is really is one that I think can compete
at the top of our conference. That's also I think
a justifiable feeling. And the reality is you just you
could convince yourself whichever one, whichever side you want to
be on, or maybe somewhere in the middle. And I
(11:23):
look through the schedules over the weekend because it just
I cannot remember Louislle ever being in this situation, and
I'm not sure if they have, at least not in
the Power five level, Power four, I should say. Now there,
of course in the ACC, there's only four power conferences,
but Louisville is the only team in college football that
is yet to play a member of the Power four level.
(11:44):
And that's why I'm thinking, Okay, this is unusual.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
It is.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
It's they're the only team that's in this position where
a month end of the season you have zero real
barometer of of knowing sort of where you stand. And
you've got Pittsburgh this weekend, which will be the biggest
challenge or this team as far as just you're going
on the road, you are playing a member of the ACC.
Pitt may end up being maybe one of the worst
teams in the league.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
I don't believe they will be, but even if they are,
they're better than the teams you've played up to this point.
So I'm eager to see where they stand. But everybody
out there, every fan base, at least has something thus
far they can point to to say, Okay, yeah, we
got by the teams we were supposed to beat, and
then we played a good team and man, I wish
we'd have been better, but hey, we'll get better from it.
(12:30):
Now we know what we got to work on. We
got a real test or real look to see where
we are and what we got to improve on, because
you really don't know until you're challenged, until you're in
that spot. And I know Louisville had no control over
Indiana buying out of that series, which, by the way,
how great did they look on Saturday?
Speaker 1 (12:48):
That was dominant.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
That was about as big of a statement as you'll
ever see from a team in that spot undefeated last
year for a good stretch of the season, make the
College football Playoff. But yet, yeah, they didn't play team
that ended up being that good. And we'll see Indiana.
I'm not buying them. I'm not buying them. And they
went in there and absolutely dominated Illinois on their home field,
(13:10):
and I don't know how good Illinois is but who cares?
I mean, Indiana picking up where they left off. We
don't care what you think of our opponents. We don't
care if you say that they're not very good. We're
gonna beat them down regardless. So if we do, in
fact end up realizing this team we beat by five
touchdowns isn't any good, well, at least we beat them down.
We put them in submission, and maybe we're the reason
why they stink because we killed their soul. That's what
(13:30):
Kurt Signetty can do. And I wish louisll would have
been able to play them, but they bought out of
the series, which led to Louisville having to scramble.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
That's why they had JMU on the schedule this year.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
And another factor that I'd love to get an explanation
the ACC the a SEC not giving Louisville a game
until the end of September. I mean, I can't imagine
a coach would want that, right, I mean? And also
two by weeks for Louisville, which everybody has two now,
but they're gonna take place in the first half of
the season. Louisville will finish the season playing seven straight
weeks without a break.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
So I'm not pointing fingers. I would if I knew
who to point them at.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Indiana is going to get wonders because they wanted to
buy out of the series, which left Louisville unable to
get a good opponent to make up for it. But
also the ACC. I mean, Louisville has never gone this
long without having at least one conference game. And I
mean I just as a fan, I hate having no
clue really where my team is. Right, that's not really
early anymore.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
It's not late, But then.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
It's not especially when Nick, when you saw so many
big games, yes at the beginning, that was supposed to
be what this whole scheduling.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
It feels like we're in preseason mode, right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
You kind of feel like you kind of feel like
the student who's left after school, you know, having to
clean up the chalkboards because everybody else has kind of
moved on. And this is what we were told was
behind the college football rescheduling, what the SEC wants to do.
We got more bigger games up front, and here's Louisville.
And we talked about it on the postgame show a
little bit, and Nick, you and I talked about it
(14:54):
off the air, and we'll hear some sound from coach
Brown later this morning. Where are the issues on offense?
Are they with the offensive line? Are they with the quarterback?
Because there's certainly some questions that are being asked and
we won't know. To your point, I don't know how
good Pittsburgh is a measuring stick. But you got Miami
coming up next month. But you won't know really until
the Miami game.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Where you're at.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
And I'll say, this is a word that people don't
like to use. They don't like to admit it, but
I'll admit it.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
I'm jealous.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
I'm jealous of other fans being able to watch their
team and at least convince themselves, even if they got
to fake it that oh yeah, this is a challenge.
Let's go see if we can win. Yeah, I can't act.
I mean, Eddie George being the coach of Bowling Greens.
The only thing I got like that was the only
thing that made me feel like, Okay, former NFL great,
that's who we're going up against.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
But I mean, like his team isn't good.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
You know, the stands were pretty empty after halftime.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
Oh yeah, And I get it.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Like I get it, I understand, so quick update of
trafficking weather coming your way right here on News radio
eight forty whs. Coffee and company with you here on
news Radio eight forty whas. We are now joined by
Rory O'Neal of NBC News Rory. Yesterday, thousands of folks
showed up there in Arizona for the Charlie Kirk memorial service.
Seems as if it went off without a whole lot
(16:02):
of issue, and I'd say what would What we got
was probably what a lot of folks expected, given just
the attention that this situation has received in the last
week or so.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Yeah, certainly a powerful day.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
I think it was just over five hours long, A
big contingent of President Trump's administration, of course the vice
president and the President himself. But boy, I think the
big moment came when it was the widow of Charlie Kirk,
Erica said before the crowd, pushing through tears, that she
forgives the man that shot and killed her husband. A
(16:34):
pretty remarkable moment.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
No doubt, And I'm sure there's many that tried to think, Okay,
if I was in that situation, would I be able
to have forgiveness, and I don't think any of us
ever know until we would be in that situation, and
certainly nobody would ever want to be in that situation.
But to then hear the President come on and reference
that and also claim that, you know, he doesn't feel
the same way. He didn't necessarily quote the wife, but
(16:57):
obviously Charlie Kirk was somebody who didn't really you didn't
se him a whole lot of times being contentious, and
he would he would seem to embrace debate with peace
and not a lot of hate, and Trump acknowledging he
has a lot of hate for folks who are his
enemies in his mind at least, if anything, he's honest.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
Yeah, a bit of a different messaging I think from
the President, for sure. But what really struck me it
was just how much the focus wasn't really on politics,
but so much of it was on faith. So many
references to this being a kind of revival, you know,
an old tent revival that you may have seen a
century ago, but you know, really it was what it was,
a very religious tone from most of the speakers, a
(17:36):
few notable exceptions, but it really was a running theme
throughout the afternoon.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Elon Musk and Donald Trump seen cordially sitting next to
one another. I think in recent weeks there's been there's
been some indication that they're not at each other's throats
like they were for that moment where they just were
fighting with each other like middle schoolers on social media.
But I guess it looks as if they've patched some
things up. Okay, I Will said, I Will said.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Well, no, I would just back to you.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
I would just argue that I think Elon Musk has
sort of learned his lesson and doesn't talk about politics anymore.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Yees, So he's not going to launch his own political party.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
Right, he's sort of backed off that and sort of
you know, so by the way, I think the political
party thing could be effective if he did it on
the congressional level.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
If you look at the presidential that's a different hurdle.
Speaker 5 (18:26):
But if he wants to be impactful with all the
money he's got, put in a couple of more of
the people along his line of thinking win a few
congressional seats, Suddenly, you know, they become the Joe Mansions
of a couple of years ago. Right, They decide everything
because they're just they're in those pivotal roles. But that aside,
I think Musk has sort of backed off the political
speech there on X and I think that that has
(18:48):
helped us soften and bring back this relationship at least
cordial anyway.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
Yeah, I'm with you, all right.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
So there's been a deal reached with the Chinese as
far as TikTok being able to remain a platform that
folks in the United States can use.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
That's good news for a lot of folks who had
fear that it may go away.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
But are we expecting any changes as far as how
we can how we use it.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Yeah, well, we haven't gotten the deal done just yet.
We're close, at least the Trump administration says we're close.
China says we're not that close, by the way, But
the Trump administration put out some details over the weekend. Essentially,
the app and its algorithm will be acquired and domestically
with people like from Fox Corporation and Oracle. They'll have
(19:33):
seats on a board, maybe a representative of China will
have one seat on the board as well through Byte Dance.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
That's still up for debate right now. The question is
the big algorithm.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
Now, White House spokesperson says that the algorithm, which is
really the secret sauce in Niktok, that will be American controlled. Look,
the whole idea was Congress passed a law saying that
byite Dance had to divest itself of TikTok or the
app would be banned. This tries to work around that
and keep the app useful here in the US. You know,
(20:05):
Bytedances long maintained they don't give the information to China,
but we don't trust them, so that's why we're twisting
the arms here.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Rory is always appreciate your time, enjoy the rest of
your day, my friend, fact pick, that's Rory and needl
NBC News always appreciate his time. Yeah, the algorithm that
is the secret sauce of TikTok. And I will admit
I don't know what's in that secret sauce, but it's
good because it knows me better than I know myself
as far as what I would want to see on
that timeline. The algorithm is a powerful thing, probably too
(20:33):
much power for them if you think about it. All right,
quick update of trafficking weather. Scott's back with another sports update.
Right here on news radio eight forty whas
