Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, Kentuckyana eight oh five here at news Radio
eight forty whas Coffee and Company with you. We've got
the full team in the house today, myself Nick Coffee
the company made John Alden. He's back with us after
a couple of days out at Louder than Life enjoying himself.
How many kids did you see in attendance when you
were there, John.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'll say this, I don't know how many kids, but
there was one particular. It was probably an eight or
nine year old that I saw crowdsurfing over where I
was at three or four different times. So shout out
to the young folks who can Was it wholesome looking like?

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Did it look sweet?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Like?

Speaker 1 (00:33):
It looked like while this kid's having the tis life?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Absolutely? It was one of those things where you're like,
you're kind of wondering, like, man, I can't believe their parents,
you know, trust them to you know, not get hurt
that sort of thing.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Well, not only that, I can't believe parents would would would?
I Mean, look, I've I've been for fifteen twenty minutes
one time, So who am I to say exactly what?
I'm sure you can see a lot if you just
take the time to look around. That's what makes it
awesome in my opinion. But I was surprised to see
a lot of pictures posted. But people, some people I
even know, that would take their kids because I'd have
to say, you shouldn't do that. You can do what

(01:03):
you want, but I think you would probably have to
be mindful of sort of the surroundings they're in within
because there's.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
There's so much There's so much I don't mean it's
step on you, but there's so many things that surely
those kids have never been exposed to. Maybe they have,
maybe they have. You would assume that they haven't, but
there's a lot of things going on there that you
wouldn't expect them to have smelled or any of that stuff.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Like some of the outfits, yes, I mean so so
the ones that are really just you know, jaw dropping,
those are the ones that go viral for good reason.
And I and I would assume that those are are
rare compared to what other people wear. But I don't know. Again,
I was there, and it was a couple of years
ago when I went, But still, the thought of a
kid being there, and I'm not talking about a teenager

(01:45):
I'm talking about like a young child. I mean, to me,
it would it would be I would be worried that
they would see some things that would maybe potentially traumatizing
because a lot of what what that is for for
certain people, not everybody, but it's said dress up, it's
costplay like you dress up like you're like you're going
to be a part of what that music festival actually brings.

(02:06):
So again, I'm not passing judgment on on anybody who
took their kid because maybe you did and you knew, Hey,
we're going to make sure whatever is surrounding them is
something that we're comfortable with them seeing. But there's just
so much to see in so many people that you
really I think would lose control of that to an extent.
But yeah, how about how about the kids crowdsurfing? I

(02:26):
did see somebody in a weel in a wheelchair crowdsurfing,
which was which was awesome to see because it was
I believe it might have been it might have been
a teenager, maybe it was a young adult, but uh,
the inclusion that was that that was in place that
uh louder than life was was really cool to see.
So the events next year, these two big music festivals
that have course become such a big deal here in

(02:47):
the in the Louisville area, bringing so many people to
our city. They're swapping it. So next year it's going
to be Louder than Life that will start it off,
and then Bourbon and Beyond will will be the following weekend.
And they already have announced some of the acts that
are going to be there, and I'm sure next year
there's a chance it could be even bigger as far
as the turnout. So again, I know a lot of folks,
myself included, I don't go to these events, but I

(03:09):
realize how important and awesome they are for our city.
All right, real quick, let's talk about subscription cuts. So
the subscription boom apparently has taken on a bust because
there are let's let me look at the numbers here
from streaming platforms and I guess like food delivery services.

(03:30):
The amount of subscriptions in each US household has dropped
by thirty two percent from this past year, so four
point one last year. Now it is down to two
point eight. Monthly spending is down eight point four percent.
As far as just what people are paying each month
for all the different subscriptions they have and the reasons

(03:51):
for these cancelations mostly is cost of living, the others
raising prices because again that that's happening everywhere. And then
the the crackdowns have also led to the crackdowns on
password sharing, I should say, has led to you know,
basically just walking away from it. And I guess if
one person's paying and they're letting a bunch of people

(04:13):
use it, then those people can't use it. Then maybe
they realize, hey, they're the only ones that we're using,
and I don't need to pay for this. But the
most most common cancelations were Apple TV, followed by Paramount Plus.
And it looks like the food subscribe, So I guess
if you have and and I don't, I've never actually
ordered door Dash, Uber Eats anything like that. Is that

(04:36):
a subscription? John? Do you know? Or do you just
is it a if you have the app?

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Like?

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (04:40):
So like you can when you subscribe to those, I
believe you get free delivery, like they remove the delivery
fees or something like that.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Okay, because that makes total sense. And I guess, yeah,
so that's similar to what we have as far as
our delivery delivery of groceries from Walmart, Like, we pay
a subscription to where we can get it in a
certain time, and I guess the delivery fee is canceled
b because we pay that subscription. But if you've got
you know, if you do a one off order on
Uber Eats or DoorDash or whatever, I'm sure you know,

(05:07):
it's a different costs And they want you to sign
up because they want they the amount of money that
has been made by big corporations by simply knowing that
you will sign up and forget you're paying for it.
And it may be six ninety nine a month, twelve
ninety nine a month, to where at the end of
the day, it's not it's not breaking the bank for you.
But think about how many people just set it and

(05:29):
forget it and don't. I mean, I'm one of those people.
I'm one of those I mean, I I'm sure there
are subscriptions I'm paying for right now that I don't
even remember that I have. And again it's not like
I'm paying a whole lot of money. But if I
haven't used it and I forgot that I even have it,
that I mean, that's that's the that's the direct indication
that I don't need it. So yeah, I I don't

(05:51):
think this will ever really go away, meaning where they're
able to just take advantage and are they taking advantage
that they're not making us do it right? They're not.
They're what they're doing is taking advantage of just knowing
that people will procrastinate and not realize they're still paying
for something. Now again, I know a lot of people
do realize it and they make sure they know every
penny that's coming out of their account, and that's you know,
that's the way I wish I was, But I know

(06:13):
I'm not alone as far as just forgetting certain subscriptions
that I like, I can't remember what it was. It
might have been. It might have been Stars, which I
forgot that Stars existed, meaning that like the network that
has you know, programming content. Somebody was like, yeah, watching
the show, you should check it out. It's on Stars
and I was like, I don't have Stars. They were like, yeah,

(06:35):
you do. I use your log again. I'm like, wait
what And then then I realized, oh, yeah, there was
that one show like five years ago that I had
to sign up to watch and I just forgot about it.
So you're welcome stars for whatever money you've got for
me for you know, little little I guess it is
getting used by somebody. All right, quick updates of trafficking
weather on the way. Rody o'eil set to join us
coming up at eight thirty five right here our news

(06:56):
radio eight forty whas I cannot remember the last time
as a Louisville football fan that I that I've been
in this it's been this late into September where I
just really haven't felt like the seasons actually started. And
to be clear, I'm not blaming anybody specifically, it's not
it's not the team's fault. It's not Jeff's, Jeff Bram's fault,
it's not Josh Hurt's fault. It's just the way the

(07:17):
schedules set up this year. And as we discussed earlier,
there are some positives to you know, the news that
that that there ACC is going to nine games moving
forward that aren't just because you know, you you get
more competition. It avoids this from even being possible, Like
you won't find yourself in this situation again where you

(07:38):
have a month into the season and you've yet to
play anybody that really gives you much of a test.
And yes, I know there's some people that think, well, hey,
JMU was up in the fourth quarter. You're right, and
low Will ended up winning by a couple of touchdowns,
And if that ended up being a sign that this team,
you know, was not as good as we thought, then
I mean, I don't put it this way. If JMU

(07:59):
is ever viewed as a team that, oh, look out,
not great non conference opponent, real challenge. No disrespect to JMU,
but I would say that would be a bad sign
for Louisville. But with all that said, I don't envy
Kentucky football in their schedule because they've got one of
the toughest schedules in the country and that's probably not
going to ever change just because of their conference. I

(08:20):
guess it could depend upon which teams are up and down.
But this is a really big opportunity for Kentucky fans
to kind of see where they stand. South Carolina playing
them at night at their place is going to be tough.
That's a really tough environment. To say that they need
a win would be an understatement. But if you are
a Kentucky fan and you think, okay, we played Ole

(08:40):
Miss more competitively than most expected, and we didn't even
play that great. And then you look at your other
games against Toledo and whoever else they played. I'm not
even sure who it was, Eastern Michigan maybe whoever it was, Like,
those aren't tests for you. Those are wins you're just
supposed to get, and you got them. Those are really
throwaway games. Those are examples of games that I'm referenced
earlier that are just honestly waste of time. So now

(09:03):
you play a South Carolina team that had some expectations,
had some real momentument entering this year, and now they don't.
I don't want to act like they're going to be
some easy out but because they're not. But if you
really look at where they are, they're beatable, like they're gettable.
They beat Virginia Tech at the beginning of the season,
which looked like a good win twenty four to eleven,
until we realize Virginia Tech was god awful and was

(09:24):
going to fire their coach. Then they beat South Carolina
State and it really wasn't that that impressive of a
game for them, And then they lost to Vandy thirty
one to seven, and then they're coming off a loss
this past weekend at Missouri where they lose twenty nine
to twenty. So I think a win here would First
of all, it's actually more doable than you probably would
have expected. Easier said than done, of course, but also

(09:48):
a loss, and let's say South Carolina ends up running
away with it, which could happen, that would make you
probably feel really, really pessimistic about the rest of your
schedule when you know, so you end up having to
play teams that are clearly at right now better than
South Carolina. What do you have after South Carolina at Georgia, Texas,

(10:10):
Tennessee at Auburn. Yikes. In fact, looking at the schedule,
this is one of the more winnable games left. I mean,
they got to go at Vandy in week eleven, and
Vandy's Vandy's looking like a pretty good team right now,
all right, quick break trapping weather on the way, and
then we'll also have a sports update coming your way
as well, right here on his radio eight forty whas

(10:31):
all right, we've got a little time left here before
we wrap it up and hand it off to Tony
and Dwight. But you guys know what today is, don't you?
I know what is today's time Machine Tuesday Tuesday, tom
Machine Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
That's right, Yeah, I forgot.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Should you should have seen the excitement in Tony's eyes
when you forgot about time Machine Tuesday. Not a whole
lot of time, and really not a whole lot going on.
But we're going back fifteen years years twenty ten. The
movie Secretariat was gaining some momentum before it actually was
released in theaters because the Disney movie was shown here

(11:07):
in Louisville to a select crowd that got a sneak
peek as the film, of course, told the story of
nineteen seventy three triple Crown Champion Secretariat, and it was
there was a small showing that took place at doesn't
say which theater it is. Maybe, Oh, it was at
the Kentucky Derby Museum. I guess they hadn't they had
they had a way to show it there. Yeah, but yeah,

(11:28):
that movie was filmed, A lot of it filmed at
Churchill Downs, and I remember not I guess it was
a little bit before that. But the movie Elizabethtown, remember
that also was filmed some of it at Churchill Downs.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
I liked that movie. It's cute.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Yeah, that's what I think of when I think of
movies filmed in Louisville, just because I could. Yeah, that's
a little before my time. But I now have gone
back and seeing things in stripe that I'm like, I
know where that is. Also, this is this is the
last one I'll mentioned here. There was a story in
the Courier Journal fifteen years ago today by the lois
of Metro Council pushing back on bridge tolls. So they
passed a non binding resolution opposing tolls on existing bridges

(12:03):
and roads, including Spaghetti Junction. So now that's not a
thing we have. We have tolls, and.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
They're looking for a new provider for that now too.
Really yes, uh they Let me tell you, if you
look at the price for those two bridges, it seems
like a very It's a bargain compared to what would
cost to build those bridges today. Thank god we did
it when we did it, because now I think it's
double or triple the price to build those bridges if
we needed to.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
So they specifically opposed holes on the Kennedy, Sherman, Mitton
and Clark Memorial bridges plus Spaghetti Junction, and I guess
they were successful in fighting that, right, I mean until
you know, until now it.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Tolls or did we need tolls?

Speaker 1 (12:42):
No one likes tolls, and we need the new bridge
in the east end.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
I don't know many people do.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
My dad lives on the Indiana side that's about a
mile and a half from there. Yeah, I'm sure it
is convenient for a lot of people, but there's certain
times in rush shower. Anybody on it?

Speaker 3 (12:55):
Oh, no, that's true. I've I've walked on it.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
There's steps.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
There's been some study that like, yeah, I don't know
if that was necessary.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Well, we got it. I don't care.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
It's actually beautiful.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
We got it.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
And there's no tolls on that one. I don't think.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
I don't think.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
So there's no tolls on that don't No the money
costs where they dug underneath the four hundred million dollars
or whatever. It lost the dug underneath because two houses
were like, nope, you're not doing that.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
I don't have to pay for it. Yeah, all right,
Tony and Duder coming machine Tuesday. We got something here
vera see tomorrow.
