Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is six oh five here on a Monday morning,
news radio eight forty whas. Thanks for hanging out with us.
Hopefully we are helping you get your your week started.
Your Monday started. A lot to react to from the weekend,
That's always the case. We have talked a lot about
the sports weekend. I will admit I don't follow golf
as much as I probably should, especially as someone who
used to you know, work in sports. Right that's used

(00:22):
to be my what hosted sports talk for ten years,
and golf's the one sport I just don't. I just
don't know a whole lot about it. Never It's never
been part of my routine as far as just watching sports,
and sometimes I do have FOMO because I realize how
popular it is. But without watching or really keeping up
with it was hard not to know what was going
on in the Ryder Cup. As the Europeans ended up

(00:45):
getting it done the first time. I believe a road
or you know, the visitor ended up winning this thing.
I believe since twenty twelve. So yeah, all I saw whenever,
I was just not looking for it. But am as
found it hard to avoid people reacting to this event
because again it's the Ryder Cup. There was a lot

(01:06):
of complaints about how the Americans were playing, and sure
enough they ended up ended up coming up short, but
also a lot to react to over the weekend from
both local teams, and we'll certainly do that as we
move forward throughout the morning. Also, we did talk with
earlier about the two different mass shootings that took place
over the weekend here in America, which is just unfortunately

(01:26):
no longer really a surprise at all. I wish I
had more to add to that as far as just
initial reaction and shock value, and it's just it's starting
to wear and you got to wonder, you really sit
and think about and people shouldn't live this way.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
I wouldn't want you.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
I mean, you obviously want to be mindful of your surroundings,
and you want to be careful what situation you put
yourself and of course your family in, But what I mean,
what's off limits now? And you've got people that are
enjoying a waterfront dinner in Carolina just get ambushed by
a madman. And then of course you have folks at

(02:05):
a church on Sunday and that that end up not
only getting I mean this sick and twisted individual, more
than one hundred people that are at this worship service
and gunman shows up and fires off several rounds from
an assault rifle into the congregation before then setting the
building on fire. And we had a situation like that

(02:26):
at a church here in Kentucky just a couple of
months ago. So what what would you? I mean again,
I'm sure there are certain places where you feel a
little bit more safe than others. That's going to always
be the case. But when you when you hear of
these things happening at churches at I mean have been
at schools, right, I mean, it's just it's it's awful.

(02:47):
And I don't I don't I won't pretend to have
any type of game plan, uh to to fix it
to where these things don't happen anymore. I just know
this that it's tragic and you now and I think
one of the one of the one of the moments
for me that that hit me as far as just yeah,
I guess that's where we are. People now easily can

(03:08):
be panic to thinking that they are the next, that
their next, meaning they are at a place where somebody
showed up to do the unthinkable, And that was whenever
we had that scare at the Exposition Center over the summer.
I mean, thank god that ended up being nothing, but
exactly that a scare, but the way in which people
reacted to the false alarm and what it really just
sounded like a really just terrible timing and unfortunate circumstances

(03:32):
that led to it, to everybody thinking that there was
a potential mass shooting going on during that during that
girls basketball tournament. So to see people panic and run
the way that they did based off of what we
know happened, just some sounds and a siren and maybe
one person assuming the worst and letting it out meaning
yelling something, and everybody reacting. I mean, I guess it's

(03:53):
a good thing that we're more aware of it and
try to protect ourselves as best we can whenever a
situation does unfold. But to me, that always that that's
again that nothing ended up happening, that was just really
a false alarm. But to see those react the way
they did in real time and the assumption just be well, yeah,

(04:14):
of course this is real. It sounds like there's somebody
there that's got a gun. That that to me, that
was the one I guess localish type of situation that
that stuck with me as far as Yeah, people will
now be more inclined to believe that if there is
a sound that sounds like a gunshot and you see
somebody panic for that and they tech elf running, are

(04:36):
we now just programmed to assume that, hey, here we
go again, there's somebody that has showed up with a gun.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
And is there to kill people. So yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Not surprising that these things continue to happen. And I
wish I had a plan to fit. I wish somebody
had a plan to fix it.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
I won't pretend to know how how this is, how
we can get past this, but it's it's not getting better.
It's seemingly getting worse, and that's really unfortunate, to say
the least. All right, quick break, We've got traffick in
weather updates on the way. We now know who's gonna
be performing at halftime of the super Bowl, and also
at some point this morning, I'm gonna give away something.
I'm gonna give away tickets to our wine on the

(05:15):
River coming up. That is, I don't know when we're
gonna do it this morning, but stick around. In fact,
I'll get a game plan together as far as when
I'm gonna give these tickets away, because we're doing.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
It all week.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
It is Wine on the River Louisville, a wine and
bourbon festival that we host here. iHeart Louisville. It's gonna
be on the Belvitye or October eleventh, from two to
six pm, and We've got.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Tickets for you all week. I've not given.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Away anything on this show just yet, and I really
like doing that. I like trivia, different types of opportunities
for people to get in and win tickets. And these
are good tickets, by the way. It'll get you all
you need for this big event that we're excited to
have once again here at the belvit here on October
the eleven. So we'll tell you the details about how
you can win coming up here on the other side.
But first let's get an update on trafficking weather right
here on news Radio eight forty whas.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
So this is bad Bunny. Evidently this is some bad
I believe. I know this song is clearly in Spanish.
I think most of his songs, similar to the artists
you know, like Pitt Bull and Rique Glacy, think most
of them are in Spanish.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
I've got to say Bad Bunny is probably one of
the biggest names in music that make me feel old
and unconnected with music as far as modern music, because
Bad Bunny, Good Bunny, Big Bunny could walk in here,
and I don't know about Bunny.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Yeah, I don't know who if I would know who
it was, so but clearly I knew of the name
because I don't know how you can't. It's he He's
a star and he is going to be performing this
year at the halftime of the super Bowl. So he's
from Puerto Rico and certainly a megastar, three time Grammy winner,
and he'll be performing at the super Bowl that'll be

(06:47):
in Santa Clara, California. So this has got to be
especially for somebody that's relatively and I shouldn't say he's
brand new, but you know, sometimes you've got the super
Bowl halftime performer that is a a legendary band or
legendary artist like Usher. I think was it last year
or the year before Usher did it? And that was
somebody that clearly is is he rose to fame during

(07:10):
my childhood, and that was an artist that I would
say is probably more so for my age range, and
then you have some that are more so for the
older age range. I think it's been a while since
they've done that. I think it was the last time
there was a.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Like Bruce Springsteen maybe ten years ago or something like
the who Yes, that's another one they.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Did it, and I feel like that one wasn't wasn't
well received, but I don't really remember knowing why.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
I feel like the time it transitioned was when they
had the Black Eyed Peas on. Okay, that was I
think that's when things kind of got a little more modern.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Yeah, and then you know, you've had You've had a
lot of different directions they've gone in as far as
what they decided to do. Are they gonna go one
big name, one big band, or then maybe mix it
up where you bring in somebody, but you know they're
gonna have other performers with them, so bad Bunny is
somebody that this is probably sort of I guess during
the the trajectory of his career. This is another stamp

(08:03):
if you will, that sort of lets you know how
how big of I mean put it this way, they
don't just have anybody come out and perform at halftime,
of the super Bowl. Now they don't pay anybody, which
is another conversation for a different day. But this is
this has always been viewed as a promotional thing, meaning
if you get this gig, you will you'll you'll earn
your money somewhat, you know, one way or the other.
So he is fresh off a two month residency at

(08:27):
a someplace in Puerto Rico where he was you know,
I guess, probably selling out every night. But he is
signed to to well, never mind, he's not signed it,
but jay Z, who of course is over rock Nation.
He's producing the show with Apple Music this year, and
I guess they were a big factor in deciding who
they wanted to go with. So last year was Kendrick

(08:49):
Lamar and that of course was a highly discussed halftime performance.
And I felt as if someone who is I mean,
I know who Kendrick Lamar is, I wouldn't say that
I'm somebody that's like a huge fan of his music.
I could take him or leave him. But I remember
watching last year thinking, Okay, the super Bowl is such
a wide demo, right, I mean, we're talking about the

(09:09):
most watched live event we have every year in this country.
So you can't necessarily just cater to one specific demo.
But I felt like Kendrick Lamar was seemingly really popular
with those who are into that music and a big
fan of him. But I know there are a lot
of people that just kind of felt like, Okay, this
is this is whatever, but it's not really you know,

(09:29):
for me, Bad Bunny, I felt like I kind of
feel like we're going to be maybe in the same
in the same situation here. But I could be wrong.
Clearly they know what they're doing and I'm just one person.
But I'm not sure if this is the performance that
will really hit with the vast majority of those that
tune in to watch the Super Bowl. But maybe I'm wrong,
Maybe I'm way out of touch with music. Did you

(09:52):
know he's also into professional wrestling? John He he's been
a part of WrestleMania.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Bunny.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
I mean, is your.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Name we're probably just the two most out of time.
Oh yeah, especially for.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Guys that you know, we sound like we're seventy three
years old, although we're not. But if your name is
bad Bunny and you get into professional wrestling, you should
make a name change. Bad Bunny is not a good
wrestling name.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Is it.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
No, I don't think you so.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
So anyways, he'll.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
Be your performer at Super Bowls halftime show this year,
and I'm sure everybody will have great opinions of it
and talk about how awesome it is, and then there'll
be others that say it's the worst thing they've ever watched.
That's usually how these things go. You'll find plenty of
people that like it, plenty of people that hate it,
and they'll argue about it. That's really what happens, it
seems like over the years. All right, let's get to
a quick break. We'll get to traffic and weather updates

(10:36):
for you. Also, we've got another sports update coming your
way right here at news Radio eight and forty whas.
So at seven fifteen, we'll give away a pair of
passes to the Wine on the River event we've got
coming up here October eleventh, two to six pm at
the Belvedere And it is our event here that a
heart Louelville puts on looking forward to it. And again
we've got tickets all week. We'll give our first pair

(10:57):
of tickets away coming up at seven fifteen, So stick
around and you'll see how you could be one of
the lucky winners. It is six thirty five here on
a Monday morning. Hopefully you had yourselves a good weekend.
The warm weather has stuck around longer than I would like,
but I'm sure there are many of you that actually
are enjoying the warm weather here as we are now
just a couple of days away from October. I know

(11:18):
yesterday and I think these next few days are expected
to be above the average, and I'm waiting for fall
weather to get here consistently. Give me hoodie weather, And
it looks like fall outside, especially when you get to
a little bit later in the evenings, because of course
it's not staying light outside quite as long. That's typically
you know, what happens this time of year. But this
week gonna be gonna be pretty warm. So if you're

(11:39):
somebody that enjoys it, take advantage because eventually we'll get there,
all right. So Louisville football over the weekend, they had
their first real game. I feel like, I know James
Madison was a challenge, and obviously they did play two
other games, but this was the first chance to actually
see what they would look like against an acc opponent,
and they looked awful to start. I'm not sure they

(12:02):
played a worse quarter than the first one in that
game on Saturday under Jeff Brohm. I mean, they were bad,
and they got off to a terrible start in the
second quarter to first play, I believe it was was
whenever they had what appeared to be a roughing, not
roughing the punter, but on a punt. They to me,
it looked like clear interference, but I guess the Pittsburgh

(12:24):
player that called for the fair catch didn't do it
in the right time, and therefore that led to a
Louisville player being blocked into the guy feeling the punt,
and of course Louisville scooped it up and took over
possession near the goal line. So that was just a
great break that went their way, and then they slowly
but surely clawed back into it. I was not feeling

(12:44):
great whenever they clawed their way back in and then
gave up ten points at the end of the first half,
But then they still found a way to win. So
I still don't know if I have any kind of
a feel as far as how good they are, but
they found a way to win, and now they're going
to have another chance to get an acc win on
Saturday when they host a ranked Virginia team, who of

(13:05):
course is now ranked in the top twenty five after
knocking off top ten Florida State, who of course was
top ten at that time this past Friday. So I
was begging to see just where they stand as far
as facing legitimate competition. And I know Pittsburgh's not a
great team by any means. In fact, I have no
problem in saying it. I think Louisville benefited from Pittsburgh
being a bad football team. Again, give you give credit

(13:27):
where to do. Louisville made them pay for the mistakes
that they made. But just a really, really wild football
game if you think about the entirety of it. But yeah,
I wanted to know where Louisville stood, and again they won.
But I'm not I'd be a liar if I said
I feel like the rest of the season they're going
to have they're gonna be able to win games. Doing
what they did on Saturday, very sloppy, a lot of

(13:48):
foolish penalties, and the quarterback play got better. But Miller
Moss to me seems like a guy that as far
as his ability, you can see at times why he
was viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in the
country coming out of high school. I mean, you can
see the arm talent is there every now and then,
but I think what it comes down to is he's
just he's not super experienced in college football.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Right.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
He played here and there at USC was their starter
last year, but things didn't get off to a good start,
so then he became a guy that they put on
the bench. I mean he essentially got benched and at
that point decided to go in a different direction. And
here he is at Louisville. So you can see the
talent is there, but I think anytime he anticipates any pressure,
he has a panic attack, seemingly. But whenever he's comfortable

(14:36):
and he's got time, he can make some plays. It's
just I think when you get to the portal, most
guys that transfer into be your quarterback for Louisville specifically,
I mean Jack Plumber, Tyler Schuck, those guys played a
lot of football before they took over the offense. For
Jeff Brohm, Miller Moss not so much. I mean, he
has some experience, but not a whole lot of valuable experience.
So he is in real time cutting his teeth as

(14:58):
far as just figuring out how to how to handle
when you've got pressure coming your way. And look, the
offensive line, Uh, they're going to be a work in progress.
I don't I would, I would not call that a
strength of this team right now. But here's here, here's
a real nightmare disaster. You can have a inept offensive
line that's just kind of been don't break and a

(15:21):
quarterback who can make plays.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
You can't. You can't have both, right.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
You can't have a quarterback that is that is a
real liability and an offensive line that also is a
big liability. That's a that's not a good recipe for
you to be a successful football team. So I'm hopeful
that Miller Moss gets more comfortable and Jeff brom Can
can can look at what he's seen in these first
four games and get a better feel for, you know,
how to put him in the best position to succeed.

(15:46):
And both running backs did play Duke Watson Isaac Brown,
but you could tell both of them were were not
one hundred percent give them credit for giving it a go.
You could tell those guys were not at their best.
And of course the offensive line didn't really help them.
So in a weird way, I feel like Louisville was
just fortunate to be able to get out of there
with a victory, and they took advantage of a lot
of mistakes that Pittsburgh made. But I just have a

(16:06):
hard time thinking that you're going to see some teams
on this schedule have some of the bone that it
plays at Pittsburgh made, including some of those late turnovers.
So look, you'll take it if you're a Louisville fan,
But I think we've got another opportunity on Friday. I'm sorry,
I should say Saturday against Virginia to really, you know,
see where you stand. And it's weird as that sounds,

(16:27):
Virginia is going to be the team that comes in
and gives you a chance to, you know, get a
feel for where you are. All right, quick break, We've
got traffic of weather updates on the way. I want
to talk a little more about the financial crisis the
JCPS has on their hands because the thought of taxpayers
having to clean up their mess, I mean, I don't

(16:48):
think it. I don't think anybody's going to let that happen.
But I also don't know what else, what other options
JCPS has a real disaster situation.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
No doubt.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
All right, stick with us right here, it's news ready
to eight forty whas it is six forty seven here
on a Monday morning. Thanks for hanging out with US
News Radio eight forty whas. So the JCPS budget issue
is something that is going to be a talking point,
I would assume for a while until we figure out

(17:17):
I guess what their plan is to fix their disastrous
situation that they're in. So they run on a two
point three billion dollar budget, and even after cutting one
hundred million this year, the district still needs to slash
another eighty eight million next year just to balance things out.
But you know, cutting a loan is not is not
going to solve it.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
So the leaders of.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
JCPS they want to boost teacher pay to stay competitive
amid the shortages that they have. But the budget, of course,
leaves no room for those raises. And I mean, I
think it's been a known thing that JCPS has has
had to give raises, has had to pay on the
high end in order to retain a lot of teachers,
and of course to attract teachers who will take on

(18:00):
those jobs because they pay more than maybe the same
job at different districts. So there are options here. I
mean increase property taxes, I mean anything above a four
percent revenue bump would likely go to a voter situation here.
And you could add a utility tax. There's I think
one hundred and sixty six of the one hundred and

(18:20):
seventy two school districts in Kentucky already collect a utility tax.
JCPS is one of just fourteen that don't. And I
mean there's already been some pushback, and know it was
discussed last week, you know, John Shannon had a story
about any They just had some comments from folks that
are already saying, hey, if this isn't if this is
something that you have in mind as far as making
tax payers pay to clean up the mess, we're not

(18:43):
going to stand for it. So I'm sure it's the
biggest priority right now within the JCPS world, because I
don't know how it can't be. But I guess that's
why those people are in the positions they're in so
they can figure this out. But I doubt that there's
any real easy fix here as far as this this

(19:04):
getting addressed without there being any real big fallout. But again,
this is this is their mess, right, I mean, you know,
you've got a two point three billion dollar budget and
yet just hearing that they can cut a million dollars

(19:24):
and still be eighty eight million short. I mean, I
don't know what the perfect plan is to fix it,
and I'm sure they don't either, but they got to
figure something out, and it really did turn into sort
of it he said. She said last week because there
are some including the current board CFO, that claims he
was not at all surprised that many were, in fact

(19:47):
surprise to learn that the financial situation.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Was quite as bad as it actually is.

Speaker 1 (19:52):
But then there's others that say, well, no, nobody was
misleading anybody. Nobody was trying to keep information and from
getting out. I mean I have a hard time believing that,
because again you can, I guess both things can be true, right.
Maybe in your updates you were not highlighting just how
bad the financial situation was, but you also didn't maybe

(20:15):
bury it to where nobody could find out if they
wanted to. But clearly this is a this is this
is tough, all right, quick break, We've got travving and
weather updates on the way. We'll see how the roadways
are looking I believe we're up to a pretty smooth
start here on a Monday morning. Let's hope that the
stays the case. But again, we'll get you updated right here,
right now. It's news Radio eight forty whas
