Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Monday morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
It is six oh five here at News Radio eight
forty whas it is coffee and company with you. Thanks
for hanging out with us, Nick Coffee, that's me.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
I hope you knew that. If not, my ego is
not hurt.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Nice to be here and also nice to have the
full team John Alden alongside. You just heard John Shannon Scott.
We'll be back with sports coming up in about twenty minutes.
As we get the week started, a big weekend coming up.
We've got Bourbon to beyond that's getting started, which, of
course it's the following week that is Louder than Life. Right.
For some reason, I was thinking for a second that
they took a week break. They don't do that. They
go back to BA.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
They've slowly over the years moved both of the dates
up for each festival. It used to be in early
October is when Louder than Life would be, But now,
of course they're back to back in the middle of September.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, and I'll tell you what, it couldn't have worked
out better for Louisville football fans who don't have to
worry about deciding do I want to go to Cardinal
Stadium and watch the team player. Do I want to
go take in an awesome music festival that we have
right here in our backyard. I know last year they played,
I believe, a home game the same day that that
one of the events was going on. It might it
feels like it's happened in the last couple of years and

(01:03):
it's just that time of year, and I'm not sure
if it's luck or if maybe there was something done
to where they were able to get the acc or
whoever to help them out, because you know, this best
case scenario for everybody, now, I'll be honest. Then a
Louisville football fans, they've got a passionate group that comes
out and supports regardless of how things are going. But

(01:25):
also no many that say, you know, look, hey for
this date. If it's Bourbon and be On, I'm gonna
put my tickets up for sale because you know, I
can go to a handful of lois of football games
every year. I can only go to Bourbon and Beyond once.
And it really what I've noticed is that a lot
of people just enjoy what the Bourbon and Beyond Louder
than Life music festival brings regardless if they've got like

(01:46):
one of your all time favorite groups or bands. But
whenever there's one, it just takes one or two groups
or artists that are going to be there that people
make it such a big priority. Which I will say,
you know this better than me, John, You're more I
guess experienced, and I guess just opinionated when it comes
to these kind of things.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
If you've got.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
A an artist that you're a big, big fan of
or a band, yeah, and they're at a music festival,
but and it's not, you know, their own show.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
It's not like their world tour. It's a different experience, right.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Yeah, because especially like when you got an arena show,
for an example, versus an outdoor venue. Normally the arena
shows come with their own little special pyrotechnics, The stage
might like a little bit different, and they can do
that sort of thing in minor ways, minor little tweaks
at these festivals, but it's more there's definitely it's less personalized,
I guess from the artist. It can be depending on
if it's like a hometown show that sort of thing,

(02:38):
but it's definitely more of a kind of a broader experience.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
If that makes sense.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yeah, and I think if you're if you're a fan
of of a of a group or an artist, but
not not to the extreme where you can recite every song. Yeah,
it actually works out well because they don't have an
entire set like they do if they have their own tour,
they're they're they're one of many artists. Now again, they
usually play for a pretty long time. Yeah, but you
might you might be you might be able to miss

(03:03):
out on some uh, some songs you may not be
familiar with. They may they may just play the majority
of their hits if they have them, and that that's
usually what people what people want. I always share this
story about the who is the one that they got
rid of Hometown Rising the Country the country music festival,
which was great, but they only did it one year
and it didn't look like they plan on bringing it back.

(03:23):
But I remember going to that and the lineup was awesome,
certain I mean, I was familiar with just about everybody
that was there. And then of course there were some
really big names there that I was a big fan of,
and then one name that really just I could not
quite comprehend why he was a part of it, and
it just didn't make a whole lot of sense. He
seemed much different than anybody else. And then I saw
him in action, and it was a reminder that being able.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
To perform is a huge part of it. You can
be a.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Great musician with great songs, but like, you got to
bring some stage presence, you got to bring some energy.
And Brett Michaels being on the card for Hometown Rising.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
It was strange, but I'm telling you he was great. Wow.
Like he did some Poison songs. That was a band
he was in, right, I think it was.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
And then he did he covered like Sweet Home Alabama,
and he just was very engaging with the crowd. And
he had probably like five pounds of makeup on his
face and his I think he had a hair piece,
and it was it was sweaty and you know needed
to be adjusted. But you know, he put on a show.
You know, he was an entertainer. And I there are
some really really big name artists that I'm fans of,

(04:29):
but when I go to their concert, it's a reminder that,
you know, I'm enjoying myself. But if you can really entertain,
put on a show, be into it, it can go
a long way. I mean I'll give you, give you
an example, and I don't mean to. I mean, this
guy's a legend. But like i've seen George Straight. He's great,
but I mean it's he's just there's not much to
it now. Again, maybe he doesn't need to do much

(04:51):
because he I mean, he's gone on what twenty farewell tours,
the last ride with George Straight, and then he's back
out next summer doing the same thing. So but then
somebody like like Luke Comb, so I'm a big fan
of anyways, like he puts on a show. He's very entertaining,
highly energetic, and it goes a long way. And Brett Michaels.
Maybe it was the many, the many drinks that had

(05:12):
that day that had me thinking Brett Michaels is killing it.
But I mean I could tell me what made me realize.
It was just looking around at the crowd like he
was he was a showman, and yeah it was.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
It was a good time.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
I wish they'd bring that one back, but I'm sure
they've got enough on their plate. Danny Wember and his
crew when it comes to managing these two events. Bourbon
to be on Louder than Life that again have really
grown to be something special that folks in Louisville should
be proud to have. And again, there will be a
lot of people here in Louisville these next two weekends.
So let's let's be on our best behavior. Let's let's
make a good impression. I mean, you can do whatever

(05:44):
you want. But I'm just saying, like I enjoy when
people come and take in Louisville and experience it, and
they like it, they want to come back, maybe they
want to move here. That's probably getting a little ahead
of myself, but still exciting two weeks for sure. All right,
let's get to an update on the roadways. We'll see
what we're looking at as far as traffic. Bobby Ellis
will get a situated there. Matt Melosovich has our forecast.
It's a Monday right here on News RADIOA forty whas

(06:08):
if you missed it, we have two winners of the
power Ball that of course ended up being one of
the biggest jackpots of all time. And it was a
individual in Texas and and then someone in Missouri. We
don't know where at in Missouri the ticket was purchased,
but in Texas it's in a small town which I
feel like that Usually I shouldn't say that that means

(06:32):
they're more deserving of it than anybody else, regardless of
where you're from. But somebody winning it who is already
you know, financially set it just it's you know, I
guess you're happy for him, but it's better whenever it's
someone that you feel like, wow, this is It's like
the underdog story in sports, right, That's kind of what
it feels like. So again, one point seven eight billion

(06:52):
dollars is what these two are are going to share.
And the winning numbers were eleven, twenty three, forty four,
sixty one, sixty two, and the powerball was seventeen. So
each winner can take eight hundred and ninety five million
inannuity over twenty nine years, or they can take four
hundred and ten point three million lumps some before taxes
come out. So congratulations, uh to uh to those individuals

(07:15):
who are now filthy rich, and it must be nice.
I can't relate, but it is exciting to see people
get excited about it.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
It felt like.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
People who I typically run around with as far as
just friends, even even colleagues, I mean just the you see,
there's another they had another night without a winner. I
want you know, when's the next drawing? What's it gonna
get to now? So again, but the more the more
it prolongs, and the bigger the jackpod gets, of course,
it means it's going to be even more difficult for
people to actually win. But two people won, and again

(07:47):
I'm I'm very jealous. We're off to a rather smooth start.
It looks like on the roadways this morning, Bobby Ellis
will get you caught up here just a couple of minutes.
But there is a disabled vehicle on US thirty one
North that's on the Clark Memorial Bridge, so be advised.
And then also you have another disabled vehicle that is

(08:08):
on I seventy one south just past I two sixty five,
So I seventy one just passed the Snyder at mile
markers seven point seven. So again, so far rather smooth.
I mean, I always hate saying that because when I mentioned, hey,
it looks like we're doing okay, not so bad. If
like you're the if you are, maybe we have one
accident in the Kentuckian area. And again I'd say, if

(08:31):
we only have one at any moment, that's pretty solid, right,
I mean, we want perfection, but that's that's tough to ask,
tough to expect, certainly. But if you are, if you're
impacted and you're sitting in traffic and your day's delayed
and you're late to work because of it, I'm sure
you don't like me hearing acting like.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Oh, everything's okay, it's gonna be great.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
So if you are impacted by these these minor issues,
I feel for you. But overall, looks like we're in
We're in a pretty good place, all right. Something I
want to get to before for too long, and we
certainly have a lot of time left this morning to
get to it. But the the Donald Trump v. Chicago,
I mean, it seems like the loud ones in Chicago,
of course, with a platform with a voice, they're making

(09:10):
it sound as if they don't want Trump to send
in anybody from the National Guard. They don't need any help.
Everything's okay. And I'm trying I'm gonna try to be
careful with my words here because I don't want to
act like I'm making light of it, because clearly, I mean,
Chicago's a very dangerous city and if there's a real
need for help to to clean things up. That's good,

(09:32):
But like I just I cannot quite figure out why
people would be against added resources that can only help, right,
Like what is sending National Guard into you know, help
with violent crime. I mean, look, I guess you can
look at what's going on in DC and you can

(09:52):
look on the internet and figure out whatever you want
as far as what's if you want to believe that
it's more so because of something that Donald Trump put
in place, or more so because of what they're doing locally,
and Trump's just trying to take take credit for which
some are saying.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
I mean you can find that.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
You will find people that'll say that that'll make you
feel as if, yeah, you're content and you know, you know,
you know what's the truth. But overall, regardless, it's working.
There's been a real big improvement there. And if I'm
just a Chicago resident, I'm not even thinking about politics,
I would say come on down, like, come and help us,

(10:26):
we need it. But such resistance and again, I know
there are some things you could point out as far
as well, hey is it worth using taxpayer dollars to
do this? And are people going to be in fear
because you know they're uncomfortable that the National Guard's got guys.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Walking around fully armed.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Are you not in fear walking around certain places in
Chicago as it is? Because it's an insanely dangerous city.
Of course in certain spots not as much, but still
like the numbers are the numbers as far as violent
crime murders in Chicago, And I just feel like, if
I'm just Averridge Joe Chicago citizen, I would say, yeah, please, please,

(11:05):
if all means, come help us. I mean, but maybe
maybe I'm missing something I don't know. All right, we
got trafficking weather updates on the way. We've also got
another sports update coming up with Scott, So don't go
anywhere caep be locked right here on news radio eight
forty whas. Thank you very much. John Shannon, Hey, it's okay.
I don't know what's going on. Maybe we'll just blame
it on Monday. But I was not on track. I

(11:27):
was saying it was five twenty something, and in fact
I was wrong. It's in the six o'clock hours. So
now John Shannon's trying to get us all the way
to seven o'clock. I get it, everybody wants to rush
through a Monday. But I can tell you right now
it is six thirty five here at Kentucky and this
morning news News Radio eight forty whas, and I tell
you what. The college football season's off to an exciting start.

(11:49):
I love when Louisville plays on Friday. I'm a louisvill fan.
For those who didn't know, I was able to go
out to the game. Another great night. Anytime you get
to Ellen N Cardinal Stadium on a Friday night and
the weather cooperates, it is it is a beautiful thing.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
And it was exactly that.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
And I love being able to Then Saturday, I don't
have to worry as much about my team, but just
kind of sit back and observe and watch all the
great college football action that's going on. And this game
probably wasn't on your radar and you may not even
realize it happened, but it was a pretty big upset.
But I feel like when Army football wins, we all win.
And Army not only got a big win, they have

(12:24):
a story from this past week leading up to their
game that was pretty awesome. But let's start at the
beginning of the season. So Army came out and actually
had what was another upset but again probably didn't move
the radar because it's its army. But they lost in
double overtime in Week one to FCS Tarleton State, which
again that was I believe the second ever victory for
Charleston State, which again not a good way to start

(12:45):
your season if your Army. Well, then they bounced back
on Saturday with a twenty four to twenty one win
over Kansas State on the road. So they were down
thirteen to nothing and came back in the second half.
And of course, when I mean they run the ball
right triple option, that's what they do, and I don't
think anybody would say that that's exciting football as far
as just fast pace, big time chunk plays. However, I

(13:09):
do find it entertaining watching them John because they I
just like to see if other teams are going to
be able to stop them, if they're going to be
able to keep them from dominating time and possession. In
the second half, Kansas State simply couldn't do it. And
again I want to act like I root for Army
football all the time and I'm watching them every weekend,
but when they win, it's it's it's it's fun to see,
especially because when they do when they do what they

(13:31):
do their way. Yes, and a big time Big twelve
program is not able to stop it. It's it's just
cool to see.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
And you know a lot of a lot of the
Power five teams stopped playing them a couple of years
ago because they they they three years in a row
or four years in a row. Uh They played A
and M in in uh San, Antonio at the Alamodome
and it took a last second play for them not
to win that game.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
They're on the goal line and missed a fourth and
goal pass.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
The next year they went into Ohio State and help
their own at at U up there in Columbus.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Didn't they play Oklahoma closest. They took Oklahoma to overtime.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
That was one of the coolest things I remember seeing
in sports because that was a full crowd in Norman.
Of course, they've got one of the biggest, most passionate
fan bases out there. And the standing ovation the crowd
had for Army just for coming in and competing was
it was I mean, it darn near made me emotional.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
It was just really really cool to see.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
And then the very next year and this popped up
in my memories over the weekend. The very next year,
a couple bad calls by the referees saved Oh, he's
at San Diego. Now I'm having to brain fart the coach.
Oh Harbaugh saved Jim Harbaugh's job at Michigan because Army
took him to overtime, and a couple bad calls that
went Michigan's way saved Army from from from from that upset.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Well, and they you know, they you're not gonna likely
run into anybody on your schedule or in a bowl game,
or in a or in a college football playoff game
that plays the way they play. No, So I do
think that if you were a posting like they might
mess around beat you, and if you beat them, it's
kind of what you're supposed to do. So I do
understand them being but also, you know, on Army side, look,

(15:06):
they realized they're not going to be getting the best
players in America. So let's find something we do that's
system based and we don't have to rely on getting
a five star every couple of years to make this work.
So it was awesome to see in this story again
like this is what makes this awesome. These are guys
that are playing college football on Saturdays, but they're also
serving our country. Sophomore Larry Pickett, junior, he's a safety.
He made headlines before the game on Saturday because he

(15:28):
and his father apparently pulled a man from a crash
where a vehicle was about to go up and flames.
So Picking and his father navigated what appeared to be
some sparking power lines and there was a driver that
was near I guess involved in an accident that caused that,
and they pulled the driver out seconds before the car exploded,
and it was actually caught on video, which again, like

(15:49):
talk about army football players, also reminding you that you
know the core values duty on oor country, Like it's
not just football, it's every.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
Service before selfless service. Yeah, that happened. It happened Labor
Day weekend. It's on video and quite honestly.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Okay, I thought it was more recent that still that
whenever happened, it's awesome.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
That puts him honestly, that puts him in line. The
military has a medal for acts of bravery and heroism
outside of a combat and it's called the Soldiers Medal,
and it has been awarded to soldiers for doing things
just like this before. And I think something like this
personally is someone who spent you know, almost twenty five

(16:31):
years in the military. That my opinion, that puts him,
that puts him in line to get that medal for
doing that risking his life.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
He didn't have to.

Speaker 4 (16:38):
He could have called nine one one and said, you know, hey,
helps on the way, but instead he with the help
of his father sprinted over and put their life on
the line to get that guy out of that car.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
I don't know if it's still a thing or not,
but for a while there, when Army would get a
power five, which they did, they just played in they won,
the hosts would post a picture of the locker room
after the game because the way Army cleaned the locker
room when they were visiting locker room, they would leave
it in spotless condition.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
Yes they do. And it's just you know, it's it's
what they do. Yeah, that's good stuff. All right, they
maybe go Army beat Navy.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
All right, let's get it up there to Travigan Weather
on the way and don't go anywhere. Why would you
stick with us right here on news radio eight forty
whas it is six forty eight here Kentucky had his
morning news news radio eight forty whas Coffee and Company.
That's us, Nick Coffee, that is me. And again you
didn't know that my feelings aren't hurt. Now you do,
though I know you are familiar with with the team

(17:35):
we have here, the company mana John all On alongside
John Shannon. He'll be back with the news update in
about twelve minutes. And of course we've got sports coming
your way, uh in just a couple of minutes with
Scott Fitzgerald. So if you've yet to give sports betting
a shot, now is the best time to do it.
And I want you to hear me out because I'm
gonna explain why you need to take advantage of this

(17:57):
offer from DraftKings, because it'd be silly not to. Because
they're gonna give you five dollars. I'm sorry, let me
back up. I misspoke. They're gonna give you two hundred
dollars in bonus bets. If you just give them five dollars.
All you do is bet five bucks. You get two
hundred dollars in bonus bets instantly, Plus you can get
two hundred dollars up in an NFL Sunday ticket from.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
YouTube and YouTube TV.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
So all you gotta do is sign up with our
code WHAS again down on the Drafting sportsbook app. Use
the code WHAS. You get two hundred dollars in bonus
bets instantly when you place your first bet of just
five bucks. And again, I know Sunday Ticket is a
is a popular item, and saving two hundred dollars off
of that from YouTube and YouTube TV, that's just an

(18:37):
added incentive. I mean, we're a getting you say, big
money on Sunday Ticket and of course you just give
five bucks and they give you two hundred dollars to
bet with. It's the perfect opportunity to give it a shot.
If you haven't yet. I've talked about it quite a bit.
I think those who've never tried it don't realize that
it's not about trying to make a bunch of money.
I mean, you could do that, certainly, but it enhances
the experience of watching sports when you've got some skin

(19:00):
in the game, whenever you've got rooting interest, because it
could be a winner for you. That of course puts
some money in your account. It's it's awesome. I had
a lot of fun betting this past weekend, and this
is what happens to me. By the way, I'll end
up betting in Week one of the college football season
or Week one of the NFL. One of them, I'll
end up having a pretty good weekend. And that's what
happened yesterday. Had a nice seven leg parlay in the NFL.

(19:22):
Although I cashed out, still won a few hundred dollars,
which is rare for me. But I cashed out because
I just assumed, Well, the kicker for the Falcons coup,
He's going to make this chip shot and then he
goes to overtime, and if the Buccaneers don't win, then
I get nothing. So I cashed out. He misses the
field goal. Had I not cashed out, I would have
won substantially more money. But I'm not looking at it
in a bitter way. I'm just going to try to
remain positive. But again, even if I didn't win, it's

(19:46):
still fun. It is a lot of fun. So again,
this is the opportunity for you to give it a
shot if you haven't yet. Down the draftings sportsbook app
used code WHS. That's code WHS two hundred dollars in
bonus bets instantly when you play shi first bet of
five dollars in partnership with DraftKings. The Crown is yours
gambling problem. Actually, let's just do this. Eighteen plus Kentucky only.
