Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is eight oh five here on a Monday morning.
Happy Monday, till you hopefully you had yourselves a good weekend.
I know, I know I did, not that you care,
but now you know I had a good weekend, and
the whole team had a good weekend from what I
can tell. And if you didn't have a good weekend
this past weekend, let's let's try again this upcoming weekend.
And if you're going to Bourbon and beyond, that can
only help Bourbon and Beyond getting set for I don't

(00:20):
know how many years it's been going on, but it
seems like each each and every year it's a reminder
of just what that event brings to the city, as
far as just people that come in and experience Louisville
and give businesses money. And of course that's that's how
the world goes round. And if you can see when
you look at Airbnb prices, it's probably not a surprise

(00:44):
that air Like if you have a home, a condo,
an apartment, and you live in it sometime throughout the
year and then you put it up for rent every
now and then, your opportunities to raise the price are
I mean derby, I mean that's whenever you see a
huge spike. So this says that the average cost in

(01:07):
Derby week Derby weekend, not Derby week, but the weekend.
So we're talking Friday and Saturday of Derby three hundred
and eighty three percent higher than the weekend following Derby
and two hundred and forty one percent higher than the
weekend before. So clearly there's a huge, huge spike there.
And then Derby Day itself, meaning that's Saturday, I mean
five hundred and five percent above the following weekends rates.

(01:30):
So it's not a surprise, right Derby brings a ton
of people to Louisville. But another example of how Bourbon
and Beyond has become such a big, big deal to
this city. As far as just bringing in tourists, you're
not that far off. I mean again, you're not going
to be able to charge the same amount. The demand's
not going to be there and probably never will. But
right now the Bourbon and Beyond, I mean there's a

(01:51):
listing labeled modern Loft Skydeck walk to Bourbon and Beyond.
This is somebody that just realizes they've got property that
is close to where people could stay there and walk,
which of course would make it a little more convenient,
but it is listed at one hundred and three thirty
three dollars a night, which is not super expensive. But
there's other places in Louisville that are just you know,
nice homes that you're gonna rent because maybe you just

(02:14):
want to stay in a nice home if you're traveling
for the festival, or maybe you are bringing a group
of people and you want to be comfortable and everybody
have enough room. You've got some places going for over
five hundred dollars a night. So that's just again another
example of what that event brings to Louisville as far
as just the amount of people that come from all over.
So I don't know if there's a and I don't

(02:35):
have any data to back this sub but it really
felt like last year when Zach Bryan came for the event,
that he was such a big name at that time
and he still is, to be honest with my sister
actually went over the weekend to see him play at
Notre Dame, and obviously that's a humongous stadium and I
didn't see any empty seats. So he's on a heck

(02:55):
of a run right now. As far as just if
he's doing a tour. So if he's on tour in
a stadium or an arena, it's likely going to be
sold out. But he came last year and it just
felt like the timing was right, and it just felt
like there were a ton of people here that day
for the festival, but they were just here to see
him because they wanted to see him in person.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
So you're not wrong about that. By the way, last
year when Zach Bryant performed at Bourbon and Beyond, there
were sixty thousand in attendance on that Saturday, making it
the largest music festival day in the history of the state.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Yeah, I mean you could just you could tell, you
could feel it, and he just had such buzz at
that time. And it's not to say that he doesn't
have it now, but yeah, I don't think there's an
actor an artist in this year's lineup that maybe will
will bring out that type of crowd. But still they're
going to have a bunch of people on hand and
that's good for the city. So looking at other weekends,

(03:45):
I guess other times in the year that are big
for people to be able to take advantage and make
some money on renting out their house, their apartment, whatever
it may be, and you've got a lot of than life.
It doesn't do the same. I think a lot of
people go to a lot of in life that travel
like they camp, don't they It's camping a thing at
bourbon eyon.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
I don't know if it's as big of a deal.
I think they have it, but it's definitely a bigger
it's a bigger drawl for louder than life, the camping.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Oh yeah, when we when we were talking to some
folks when we went a couple of years ago, you
remember what one one young lady described she saw at
the camp experience, right, yeah, something.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
We probably shouldn't talk about on here. I would think, yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
We we we can't discuss it, but you know, just
let your imagination.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
See some things from the highways. What she was saying,
she was so.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, I'm excited. I'm not I'm not planning on going,
but I just I like when we've when there's just
a certain energy that she can feel. Whenever you've got
something going on in Louisville that has brought a lot
of people here and they're not here yet, at least
I don't think so. If they are here. They're very early.
But if so, welcome to Louisville. Glad you're here, keep
on coming back. We h we certainly appreciate it. All right,

(04:51):
real quick before we get another trapping a weather update.
If you were holding on hope that you'd be the
next powerball winner, you're you're out of luck, unless you
are the lucky individual in the state of Missouri in Texas,
because there are two winners, one from Texas one from
Missouri that are going to split this and they are
going to be splitting one point seven billion dollars I mean, goodness, gracious.

(05:14):
The winning ticket in Texas was sold in Fredericksburg, Texas,
and the other one was in Missouri. So the winning
numbers eleven, twenty three, forty four, sixty one, and sixty two.
The powerball was seventeen. So each winner can take eight
hundred and ninety five million in annuity over twenty years
or sorry, twenty nine years, or you can do the
four hundred and ten million, I'm sorry, four hundred and

(05:36):
ten point three million lump sum before taxes. So that
is a lot of money. And these are both states
that they do. They do allow you to remain to
remain anonymous, so if you and that would never impact
me wanting to actually say that I won, because I mean,
I wouldn't care. But there are some people that clearly

(05:56):
I mean again, maybe we'll revisit that story at some
point where somebody won a lot of money and they
waited forever and I don't know if they ever even
I'm sure they eventually collected it, but it was a
legal fight because they wanted to not be public and
remain anonymous. And there are certain states that don't allow
you to do that. But luckily for these folks, if
they want privacy, they'll have it because again Missouri and
Texas allow you to do that. All right, traving weather

(06:18):
updates on the way, We got a lot more to
get into, so stick with us right here on news
Radio weight forty whas we're just a couple of minutes
away from your next update on traffic and weather. Bobby
Ellis will get us caught up and how the road
waves are looking here on a Monday, And of course,
the forecast has been beautiful the last couple of days,
and it looks like today is going to be another
one of those days, which makes me very happy. All right,

(06:39):
So if you are an Apple user, I guess an
Apple customer, I should say, and you have iPhone, iPad,
Apple Watch. I'm sure there's other toys that Apple has
that I'm just not super familiar with. But they are
having a humongous event tomorrow and this is I guess
their response to the new Google Phone maybe, but the

(07:01):
iPhone seventeen that's the headliner here for this big event.
It's rumored to be Apple's thinnest iPhone ever, and they're
gonna have the iPhone seventeen Pro and the iPhone seventeen
Pro Max, which they've had the Pro and the Pro
Max for I feel like many of the recent releases
they've had over the years. And pricing is expected to
start around eight hundred for the standard model one, thy

(07:23):
fifty for the Pro, and then twelve fifty for the
Pro Max. So what I don't know yet is what,
other than being thin, what about this? What about this
iPhone is new and better than the previous ones? Because
I will say I've never regretted getting a newer iPhone
when they put out a new one, just because I mean,

(07:44):
it usually isn't some big financial commitment because when you
trade in your existing phone. Like if I've got a
sixteen and I trade in and get the seventeen pro,
it really doesn't cost me much of anything because I'm
I'm getting a lot back in my trade, but also
I can add it to my bill and just pay

(08:07):
a little bit extra for a few months and then
it's usually paid off. So and I'm just somebody that
if there's new technology as far as what the camera
can do, especially from the video side of things, like,
I'm just so eager to check it out. But I
will say I know many people that will stick with
the iPhone they've had and let four to five new
iPhones come out and they don't even think about getting in.

(08:29):
And I don't blame you, because for the most part,
you're really not Now Again, if you're somebody that takes
a lot of pictures and you really care about picture
quality from your phone, maybe that is where you realize
you've been sort of left behind.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
But overall, I mean, I.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
See some of my friends and I'm like, what was
that an iPhone? Is that original? Is that from like
back in like two thousand and eight, And of course
I'm being sarcastic, but if you've got an iPhone that
is within the last four maybe five you know, if
you're four to five maybe back from the latest. I
still feel like, for the most part, like you, you've

(09:06):
got everything you need, so I don't. I don't have
any plans to get the seventeen Pro or the seventeen
Pro Max. But I'm sure eventually I'll get it and
I'll realize, Hey, it's not much of an update. That's
kind of what's happened these last couple of times. John,
I know your team Android. Have you kept are you
if you had the same? Like, how long do you
keep a phone before you have to.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
It's my most recent phone for I think four maybe
five years, but I just recently upgraded to what is
called the Samsung Galaxy S twenty four f E, which
is the budget version of their phone from last year.
And it's one of those things where I it'll probably
keep me satisfied for the next you know, three, four
five years.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Yeah, I'll tell you what. I probably could just wait
at cause I I initially I mean, I think I
had one iPhone for like five years, which maybe that's
not a long time, but for me it was.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
And I.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
The more I think about it's more foolish it is
for me to be so eager to go get something new.
And as much as I do love my iPhone and Apple,
I have no interest in shifting to Android or anything
like that. The last three phones I've got I don't
really notice. I mean, in fact, there's the one thing
I don't like is they're bigger, like they're bulky, like
my iPhone no longer fits comfortably in pockets. Yeah that's

(10:22):
what she said. So I look, I'm I'm eager to
see it, but I'm trying to hold out like, hey,
you don't need it, Nick, you don't need to go
try it out. Like eventually you got everything you need,
you don't want. You don't need to be out here
getting a new phone just to do it. But yes,
here are some things that are that are the selling
points as to why the seventeen pro is is the
one that you should get. Clear structure, let's see here,

(10:45):
let's see here we go. Never mind, I had the
wrong I have the wrong thing pulled up so because
again other than it being thinner, again maybe that maybe
we'll fit in my pocket. But if it's thinner, but
yet it's still built like a like an iPad screen.
I mean, it just doesn't It doesn't do a whole
lot for me. But again, they're basically the same. And
if it's smoother displays like they say, sharper pictures, a

(11:06):
performance beast, faster connectivity like all that stuff is probably
noticeable if you're really paying attention. But I don't need it,
and I'm gonna keep telling myself that, so I don't
just go by just to do it. All right, Let's
get to an update of driving in weather and we'll
keep it rolling along here. Scott's up with a sports
update here in just a few minutes on news Radio
eight forty whas it's our final segment here on a Monday.
This has gone by fast, It has gone by faster,

(11:28):
really quick morning, and we do have a couple of accidents.
That one there's not a current view that we can
see as far as it looks like the Buildtown Road accident.
That's that's been causing some misteres throughout the morning. Last
I saw they were making progress. But the one that
has slowed some people down now is I two sixty
four east and that is as you approach blank and

(11:50):
Baker Parkway. Looks like the right lane and the right
shoulder is blocked, so just be advised. But yes, a
very very quick Monday morning, a lot to react to
from the weekend and been a lot of fun. And
now we're now, we're now, we're almost out of time.
So you and I talked about Howard Stern a couple
weeks ago whenever, Yeah, there was the belief that his
whole thing was a hoax, and now we know that

(12:11):
it is over. He has walked away from Serious XM.
And uh, what what's I mean? Like none of us
know exactly what's going on upstairs with Howard Stern, but like,
does he have any interest in going out on a
higher note? Or do you think he just at seventy
one says who cares, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go
right off in the sunset.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
I think he's just doing what Howard's always done, which
is unpredictable and making some radio executives mad right about now,
because yeah, you would figure after as long as he
with all of the hooplaw that brought him into Serious
XM and the contract and everything else, you figure he
would have wanted to go out with a star spangled
salute the best of his interview, you know, shoving people

(12:51):
come back and praise him, and and then he goes out,
you know, writing on a high note, not just going.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
To heck with him.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
No, no, no, I mean if you'd told somebody fifteen
years ago, certainly even before that, that it would just
end like this, no no on air farewell, no big
send off, I mean. And in fact Andy Cohen is
filling in trying to explain the surreal situation to listeners.
I guess now, but this tells me that they were
trying to work something out as far as a contract.

(13:19):
I mean, I could be wrong here, I'm just trying
to piece it together. Yes, because the rumor of a
hoax being why they said he was out, but there
wasn't anything official. I mean, I don't know if that
would have been a wise thing to do. But a
week goes by, they don't. They don't really address it
at all, other than continuing to tease that something's coming up.
And then of course now we know that he's just out,

(13:42):
and it's not like they even I mean, it just
it became news because the fill in just said.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
It's he's been a little off and a little odd
since since COVID.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Yeah. I mean, look the listenership of just Serious SEXIM
in general. I mean, if you look at they they've
been down over one hundred thousand people year over year,
and that when his product against you know, essentially his
his show is just not getting the same reaction, and
the industry, essentially subscription satellite radio right is clearly dropping

(14:13):
as far as interest. It's just not a good recipe.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Well, hey, you know what, our governor now has a
podcast on Serious XM. Firs now a morning show opening
on Serious XM one oh one, so natural transition after
he becomes leaves the governor's mansion.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
I don't know if he's got the bandwidth to do that,
but it is curious to see what they try to
what they try to do here, right, I mean, you
just never.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
How do you feel? I mean, if if he had
given them time, and I think this is where it's
going to cause a problem in the c suite at
Serious XM in DC is they could have planned, they
could have had some fill in hosts, they could have
started figuring out, Okay, who are we going to replace
him with? And now they're just left with, like you said,
Andy Cohen, trying to explain what happened on a Monday

(14:54):
morning when everyone's expecting to hear Stern.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
I'm just, I'm just there's no way that it didn't
play out to where they were they were both thinking
they were they were trying to make it work, and
then I just didn't because that the lead up to
this says that they just tried as best they could
before realizing it's just it's just not gonna work. But
you know Howard Stern, I mean he's he's one of one, right, right,
There's other legends in radio and whatnot, but I mean

(15:18):
his there was.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
One Imus, there was one Stern, there was one the
grease man in DC. I mean those those shocks.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
There's only one Nick Coffee is true. This is true.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Hey, speaking of we should go freshen up our resumes. Yeah,
maybe take the three of us on and uh go
serious XM.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
I'm just trying to think of what because I Stern
is one of the best interviewers ever. He was, Yeah,
and I could never quite figure out what what gift
he had that made him be able to just get
something out of these guests that really nobody else could.
And it wasn't in like a dramatic, controversial way. You
just felt like you were listening to two people talking prily.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
I think it's well, that's part of it. He made
you feel just one on one with no cameras or
or that you were on the radio. And two, I
think he's a music nerd like us, so he knew
to ask some of those things that would get those
hit those spots. Yeah, you know, hit those spots.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Yeah. So yeah, it's over for him. And uh yeah,
not how I would have predicted the end if if
of course it is the end and he just decides
to retire from broadcasting altogether.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
But I said it earlier.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
He could try to do the Rogan thing, and he
wouldn't be able to compete with Rogan as far as
numbers right now, but he could certainly still do just fine.
But he probably didn't need to. He's probably got enough
money to where he can just you know, be done
with it. Yea, it's seventy one years old. All right,
We were out of time, and uh, we'll see you
tomorrow morning. Right now, you got Tony and Dwight coming.
You are right here on News radio eight forty. Whis
