Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's eighth five here on a Tuesday morning news radio
eight forty whas coffee and company with you. Thanks for
hanging out with us. So so far, I feel like
we've had a pretty pretty solid morning as far as
traffic situations other than one because if you're somebody that
was impacted by the mess this morning started on sixty
(00:21):
four West as you enter into Louisville. In fact, it
was on the Louisville side, but it led to delays
back to those that are on the Indiana side there
in New Albany. But we'll get another update on the
roadways coming your way at about four minutes. Also, we'll
have another update on the forecast that's certainly warming up,
but not going to be unbearable. I mean, if we
just get a little warmer compared to what it's been
in the last couple of weeks, that's fine by me
(00:43):
because that's still pretty comfortable in my opinion. All Right,
So I just got a quick jolt of anxiety PTSD.
So this story is, this is at the Courier. Joernal
and I have not thought about taking the act in
(01:03):
a long time, but I will admit I'm somebody that
had to take the ACT a lot. I took it
a lot of times. I don't even really want to
know how many times actually took it. But I had
to get a certain score in order to be able
to qualify to accept a scholarship. And it wasn't like
I had to get some real impressive score. I don't
even remember what it was, but took me many many times,
and finally I got it. Only did then not end
(01:26):
up going to that school, ended up going elsewhere. But
I went initially committed to play basketball at a school
called Mid Continent University in Mayfield, Kentucky, which now no
longer exists. Instead, I ended up going to a school
called Saint Catharine College in Springfield, Kentucky, which now no
longer exists. Anyways, to be an NAI athlete, you had
to have like two out of three. One of them
(01:48):
was a GPA certain GPA, one of them was a
certain test score ACT score, and then you had to
finish in a certain percentage of your class. And I
needed the score and took me a while, and I
remember just accepting the fact that it ain't going to happen.
And then that morning when I felt defeated, was when
I actually ended up getting finally the exact number that
(02:10):
was needed. But yeah, I wasn't a real good test taker.
I really wasn't a great student. That could have been
better if I applied myself, but I was never great
in the classroom. And I'm sure many of you listening
right now are like, I could tell this guy's an idiot,
but hey, don't tell anybody. Let's keep that, let's keep
that between us. But anyways, the reason I'll bring all
this up is because there's going to be a switch
for the first time, and it looks like twenty years
(02:32):
the state is now going to rely on the SAT
and not the ATC. So yeah, for the first time
in nearly two decades, the state's going to swap out
those two tests as that acquired college Admissions exam. And
it was a quiet switch that it sounds like has
has sparked some confusion and some questions as to the
whole process here, But it comes down to money. So
(02:55):
that the KD signed a contract this summer with the
SATs administrator citing cost saving. So the deal's worth one
point five million this year compared to one point eight
five million for the ACT, So it's going to save
three point six million over nine years, and there have
been some emails, according to the Currier Journal, that reveal
a lot of teachers, leaders and superintendents blind sided by
(03:15):
the decision and are worried that it could change scholarship
criteria for certain individuals. So again they make these decisions
based off money, which again I get that aspect of it.
But if you have been, if you've been, if you've
been planning, you know, you're a junior in high school
and you've been really just working your rear end off
to try to make she to make sure you are
(03:38):
as prepared as can be for the act. And now
the SAT is what is what you're having to take?
I mean, that would be be a bummer. I wouldn't
pretend to other differences in the two tests as far
as just I mean, I know they're different as far
as how the structure and whatnot, but yeah, a big change.
And John, you did you have to take the I mean,
(04:00):
I'm sure you took one of them to make you
can take you can take both. I mean, but you know,
I don't remember where it was, but there were some
guys that I played aau basketball with because of where
they were going to school. They needed to take the
SAT and they could do it. It just wasn't as convenient,
and it was I think they had to travel to
do it.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Well, I remember growing up as a young kid in
Indiana being told that the SAT was really important, that
was the standard back whenever I was really young and
might still be over there, and then coming over here
being middle in high school, knowing that it's the act.
Didn't realize there was difference, didn't you know, just knew
that once they took one one, they took the other.
And I don't really know what the decision was to
(04:36):
go with one test versus the other, but always confused
me as a kid.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I mean, I think it's clear here, and I'm sure
if if asked and put on the spot, they could
they could cite some other factors in the decision. But money.
I mean, again, we're talking about saving three point six
million over nine years, and I think the Kentucky Department
of Education would would take that deal. And again, it
may it may inconvenience some, but I mean I'm not saying,
(05:02):
oh okay, I'm not surprised at all. They're selfish. I
don't hope my tone didn't seem that way, but I
just know how things work, and that in their position,
if they can make it, if they can you know
they can save money, they'll do that. But yeah, I'm
sure there are parents who've been doing everything they can
to get their kids ready as can be for the act,
and things are, things are changing, So that's unfortunate, no doubt.
(05:25):
All Right, let's get caught up on traffick and weather,
shall we. We've got a busy eight o'clock hour. We'll
get to sports coming up in about fifteen minutes or so. Also,
I want to talk with the Louisville football because I
enjoyed being at the game on Friday, but I don't
know if I've learned anything about my team, and I
don't like that. It's not their fault. I just this
(05:45):
is sports, this is entertainment. And James Madison could have
beat Louisville. You could say maybe they should have beat Louisville.
But I just wish if we only get twelve games
a year as college football fans for our team, I
would like each of those twelve to be opportunities to
really learn something. And when you're not there, it just
it's still fun. But I don't really know what to
make of it. Also, we've got Rory O'Neil set to
(06:08):
join us coming upbout coming up about eight thirty. He'll
let us know the latest on the individual who is
facing a trial for attempting to kill Donald Trump and
the jury selection process underway. He's representing himself, which sounds
like a great idea. We'll talk to Rory about that
coming up around eight thirty five. I should say right
here our news radio eight forty whs so Bullet County officials,
(06:29):
my hometown Bullet County. I mean, I guess my hometown's
not one county, but I reside in Bullet County. I'm
sure you guys have been able to tell that in
my few months here, just because I'm proud. But Bullet
County officials are urging Kentucky to scrap the regional driver's
license hub system and bring back services to county courthouses
and let folks locally handle the driver's licenses on their end.
(06:53):
And again what I've been saying throughout the morning, who
says no to this? Because you've got Kentuckians that have
faced long, dry wait times for services that have previously
handled locally and now you've got to drive all over
the place and it's just been a mess. Not for
every individual situation, but for many people it has been
a lot of work and an inconvenience to go get
(07:16):
something you're required to have by the state, which is
your driver's license. So state leaders say that moving back
would require rebuilding infrastructure and it could take years. Well,
how long is it going to take to get this fixed?
Because this ain't working now? Again, I think even if
it is running smoothly, having to drive an hour and
a half away because you can't get an appointment because
(07:38):
the one that's close to you is is booked for
I don't know a month's time. That's I mean, that's
that's not acceptable. That it shouldn't be such an inconvenience
where you have to maybe take a day off work
to go get your I mean, it just shouldn't. It
shouldn't be that. So there was a build a restore
local licensing offices that failed this year, but it's going
(07:59):
to be reintroduced next session. And I believe that the
current investigation going on where they're trying to figure out
how many state employees were a part of this scheme
where they're taking cash under the table to give illegal
immigrants driver's licenses without even requiring them to I mean clearly.
I mean even if they took a driver's test, it
still wouldn't be legal as far as the way they're
(08:19):
going about it. But you've got Kentuckians that have been
inconvenienced by this entire situation, many of them, I should say,
not everybody, but a lot of people. And yet you
have your employees of the state making money cash under
the table to help contribute to a real issue we
have with one illegal immigrants, but also them having a
(08:41):
license with clearly no proof they even know how to drive.
I mean, the more you the more you look at
that situation. I mean again, I don't thinknybody's at ere
acting like it's not a big deal, but like it's awful.
Timing is terrible. You've got Kentuckians inconvenienced and want to
go back to the way it used to be because
the state has screwed it up. And then yet you've
got people who work for the state that are you know,
(09:03):
involved in something that is that is awful. So who
who knows. We'll see if we end up getting it
back to the way it used to be where it's
handled at the local level. But I agree with my
folks in Bullet County, State Repayton Griffy told WK why
the move has caused a real backlog and again a
real problem. Like that's yeah, that's the best way to
(09:23):
put it. Well, said mister Griffy. It's a problem. And
I know Basher has has addressed the criticisms saying that
the move would just take too much time, But how
much time we looking at to get it to where
it's not the mess that it is? And also I
don't know the number as far as how many how
(09:43):
many employees are involved in this this scheme that of
course became big news and of course even national news
to an extent. But are you going to be even
more short staff because the staff that you did have
was gonna be going to jail? I mean, just it
is a it is a mess, all right. Let's talk
about Draft Kings Sportsbook Shawe. The NFL season Week one

limited time offer. Hey forty seven here on a Tuesday morning.
Last segment for us before we get out of here.
But you've got Tony and Dwight coming your way. They'll
be live from Indianapolis at We Grow Hair Indy. As
both of those two handsome men have benefited from the
services of We Grow Hair Indy. So I'm sure they're
(11:30):
excited to have some fun today with those guys up
there and the road trip for the boys. Gus Allen,
what do you think those three got into last night?
Who knows? Right? A couple of party animals. Are they
with us? Are they here?
Speaker 2 (11:43):
I don't know if they're fully hooked up.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
I didn't think that. I was just mentioning they were
coming up. I didn't know if they were actually gonna
be No, they'd look. Look, I can see, I can
just visualize it right in front of me. If it's
if it's on the television in front of me. Tony
Vinetti's walking around, he's shaking hands, he schmooves, and he's
doing with babies. Yeah, he's doing doing what he does.
Dwight's being the natural entertainer that he is, and Gus
(12:05):
is probably just hoping that they don't screw something up?
Did Did I describe it pretty accurate? Yeah? Yeah, So
they'll be coming your way here before too long. Real quick.
So Louisville football off to a two and oh start,
and they trailed at have time. In fact, I think
they trailed going into the fourth quarter by a point
against a good James Madison team for who James Madison is.
(12:25):
And I was impressed with James Madison coming out and
looking ready for the game, clearly being a little more
into it than Louisville. They pushed him around. And I
want to be able to say, Okay, I really didn't
learn a lot about my team. They got a lot
of work to do, and that's not unfair to say
at all. I mean, i'd say that's probably accurate, but
I also can't really say that I that I think
(12:48):
that this means Louisville's going to be in much bigger
trouble when they played teams a lot better than James Madison,
because I just know the human element is a real
thing in sports. And sure they knew James Maddison wasn't
somebody they could just laugh off. But they also were
playing a team that they know that they're just better than,
and maybe they were humbled in a way and they
(13:09):
ended up lucky to come out on top and win
that game by two touchdowns. But when it comes to
just now that I am not as into sports as
I once was, as far as just the daily, the
daily grind of putting together a three hour show, like
I just I can't convince myself that I care about
games that are against nobodys. And Louisville will have three
games played in fact four weeks because they're on a
(13:31):
bye this week before I really get to know anything
about them. Because I didn't learn anything against k You
don't really think I learned much of anything against James Madison.
And they're gonna play Bowling Green not this week, but
next week. You're a third of the way into your season.
And yeah, it's been fun to watch. I'm sure they're
gonna score a lot of points. They'll probably be undefeated
when they get to a real acc game. But I
just it feels like a waste of time. Tony Vin
(13:53):
eddies with me. Tony, I don't know, have you heard anything.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
I just said, Yeah, you're a jaded old sports guy.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yeah, you're rubbing off on me.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
I was. I was like that a couple of years ago,
when you were really doing your thing, and I'm sure
you went home and you were like, I hope I'm
never like Venetti, And now you're like, damn it, I'm
like Venetti.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Well yeah, I mean I don't remember thinking like I
hope I never get to that point, but I am
at that point, and it's it's just, I mean, when
Louisville basketball is going to be playing teams that nobody's
ever heard of, sure, i'll tune in. I'll tune in,
and it'll be it'll be cool to see if they
score a bunch of points. But like, I just can't
lie to myself that that's it. Like I totally get
why people don't pay tickets to go to those games anymore.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
No, look, here's the biggest factor. Okay, the biggest factor
is that you have two small children.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Very very true.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
The whole world changes your view your priorities, what you're
interested in, all changes. So yes, there's a majority of
people where sports take a back seat when you have
two kids, cause you know why, you're a good person
and a good good dad.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Thank you so so.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
So you're just like, yeah, I don't care as much
about the outcome of the U of L game because
I have a daughter in a sun.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
You did predict the future because I remember, you know,
just being into it and I loved every minute of it.
And now you know, it's just things are different, priorities
different again. I'm a dad now and I've guess I've
grown up a little bit. But I remember you telling
me whenever your daughter gets older, you're not gonna be
asking Rick Patino or Pat Kelsey or whoever it was
at the time, questions after they beat Tennessee Tech at
(15:27):
nine thirty on a Tuesday, You're gonna be home with
your family. I'm like, nope, I gotta be there. I
gotta be there. I'm gonna be there. I'm gonna be
court side, and that's what I do and it's really important.
And now I'm just like, man, I feel like I
can't relate to the old me.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Yeah, oh yes, ask a dumb question to Rick Patino,
because if you ask a good when he would roast
you or be at home with your kids. Stop it stop.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, how's Indy?
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Indy's good man. Traffic wasn't too bad, And we're gonna
talk about hair. You shave your head so you don't
need to any hair restoration.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
But we're up. But if I do, I know where
to turn.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
That's right, we grow Hairindie dot
