Speaker 1 (00:00):
Six oh five here at News Radio eight forty whas
Coffee and Company with you, Nick Coffee, that's me. The
voice should just hear was Joe Lincoln. Good to have
him in this morning for John Shannon, John All on the alongside.
He's the man making the magic happen. And of course
Scott Fitzgerald with us. We'll be back with a sports
update in about twenty minutes or so, so we've got the
full crew here as we get this Tuesday started, and
in fact, we got it started a while ago. If
(00:20):
you're just now joining us, you're late. Actually, if you
are somebody that is still sleeping at five o'clock, good
for you. Good for you. But I did run into
a couple of people and I wasn't really trying for
this to become a thing, but it kind of did,
and I kind of like it. So John, you've mentioned,
or you've heard me mention, that are five o'clocker's right,
because obviously I don't know that many people that are
(00:42):
that are up and already at it this early, because
you know, we're bill different. Again, I say that knowing that, hey,
if I could sleep, I would I would love it
if I could sleep in but nonetheless, I've a couple
of different people came up to meet the Lois football
game on Friday and mentioned that they listen and that
that they're third part of the five o'clock crew, and
I'm we're happy to have you. If you're five o'clock,
six o'clock, seven o'clock, if you listen to podcast at
(01:03):
you know, five pm, thank you. But yeah, we've been
at it for an hour. We've had a lot of fun,
and we'll continue to do that. Your next update is
coming up at about four minutes when it comes to
traffic and whether so far traffic off to a pretty
good start. There is one abandoned vehicle that is right.
It's on Waterson Waterson West, right before sixty five. It
is It actually looks like a crash. I'm sorry, not
(01:25):
an abandoned vehicle, but it looks like a crash. But
as of right now, according to the Tramark cam, there's
no issues just yet, so hopefully they can get that
cleared up before the roadways get busier. But the left
shoulder is currently blocked. Other than that, so far, so good.
All right, So the new iPhone seventeen will be out
soon and I talked about it yesterday. I typically get
(01:48):
the newest iPhone when it's available, not as soon as
it comes out, but relatively early. But I'm gonna resist
this time. John not doing it. I'm not because I
don't need it.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
It's just too soon and not enough of an upgrade.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
It would just be a waste, okay, And I went
from fifteen to sixteen for one specific reason, and it's silly.
I'm embarrassed even mentioned what I mean. It's not I mean,
everybody likes everybody has their preferences, but there was a
certain format and video you could get that just interested
me that I was so eager to see. And I
mean it was cool, but like, I don't utilize it
(02:21):
very often. And it's not like I went out and
paid out of pocket for a brand new iPhone, because
that's really expensive. But I just I upgraded and traded
in mind, and I didn't really need to. And it
is nice to get a new phone. But I still
sometimes have like the backup works well as far as
just going from a new device to the other and
Apple having everything for you in the cloud, but I
(02:43):
sometimes end up maybe just because I have so many
like I used nearly all the data and storage that
the phone gives me. But usually after I make a swap,
like it's a couple of weeks before I feel like
I'm actually used to it and I'm not having to
move some stuff around or go download things that for
some reason didn't get didn't get transferred over. But when
it comes to this, the new iPhone seventeen, I guess
(03:05):
what stands out that's different than any others, or as
far as I guess, different than the latest ones, is
that it's it's very thin. It's just a five millimeters
stick and weighs around one hundred and forty five grams,
and they've got the six and a half inch display,
titanium aluminum build.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
So how do we go from having, you know, making
phones bigger and bulkier to now they're going in the
opposite direction.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Yeah, I mean I think the bigger and bulkier was
was because they were they were adding a lot more
to it, right, like there's more you can do. Therefore,
it's almost like a little mini computer, little laptop in
your pocket. Yeah, but I mean, straight up, I'm used
to it now, but it it when I look at
other phones, I realize Mann's bulky, Like I can't have
my phone in my pocket without like it looking as
(03:49):
if I'm carrying you know what I mean. Like usually
you could have something in you you could have your
phone in your pocket, and it's not like now, like
if I sit down, I have to I take my
phone out of my pocket because it's uncomfortable. You know.
It's not like I'm wearing tight pants. It's just my phone.
And to safely protect a precious device that is very
valuable that if you drop it, you're screwed without a
case on it, you have to have a pretty bulky
(04:11):
case too. So again I wouldn't be against having a
sleeker phone that's not quite as bulky, but that's not
going to be reason enough for me to just, you know,
go ahead and make go ahead and make a change.
Now you've talked about this before, you and I have.
I don't know if it's come up on this show,
but you are loyal to the to the Android os.
(04:31):
Are you loyal to a phone though, like.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
The same I've had a Samsung since when I was
in high school.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
And is it the same type of Samsung, the Galaxy series. Yes,
that's like their main that's their flagship. Gotcha. So I've
said this before, the the Apple and Android, it really
just comes down to what you prefer. Both can really
do the same thing.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Like as much as it actually now, it may have
been way different five ten years ago.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Like Apple snobs, I'm not one of them, but like
I get it. Like to me, I just can't relate
because I'm all I know is Apple. But all in all,
there's nothing you can do on your phone if you
have an Android that can't be done on an iPhone
vice versa. And maybe there is one things, maybe there's
a member, there are things specifically, but as far as
just overall function, how ninety nine point nine percent of
the people use their phones in day to day life.
(05:15):
You can do whatever you want on both of them,
and it just comes down to what you prefer. I've
always had since i've had a smartphone, I've had an
iPhone and I don't plan to change. John has always
had an Android and he's loyal. But I know him
well enough to know that he became more loyal too
Android and to Samsung whenever his family had an intervention
for him and wanted him to switch to Apple. Because
(05:36):
that's true, they're all Apple iPhone users, the group messages
become weird. It's and they wanted you to shift. And
for that alone, I feel like you just decided then never.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Well, it's funny. Is my family. There's six of us,
there used to be three and three, three Android users,
three iPhone users. Two of them flipped over to the
dark side, as I'll call it, the Apple side, leaving
me all alone on an island, and I'm refusing to
get off that island.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
What I think is funny is that, again, some people,
you know, are super serious about it. Some people just
have fun with it. But I just think because we're
on these things so often, like it's such a huge part,
and it's you know, more so than they should be.
But then again, there's also there's also a lot you
can do. So when you see somebody's Android and you're
an iPhone user or vice versa, you just feel like,
(06:23):
I can't relate, what is this? This is crazy to
where it just seems like how could they How would
they not have an iPhone? How would they not have
an Android? But I will say this, I've learned recently
that more people switch than I've realized. I used to
just assume people stick with whatever they've they've had. But
I now know and you mentioned some of your some
in your family that have that have been been with
one and gone with the other, and uh I I
(06:43):
don't plan on changing. And I'm sure many people are
the same way. But John's family, you're not. You're not.
Don't think you can shame him or guilt him in
to abandoning his loyalty to the Android operating system and
the Samsung manufacturing.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
I don't think the newer Androids ruined group chat. It's
the way that they used to. Because my new gallagru
it doesn't do what it used to do. It's something
about like a green thing or something. I don't think
it does it anymore. Maybe I'm wrong, though I don't
think it does.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Either way, if I'm texting you on my iPhone and
you have an Android, I'll be honest with you, I
don't even notice what would tell me that you have that.
But certain people do, and it's become you know, now
we'll say sending pictures and images, sending pictures and videos
that is something that is just a petty thing, like
I don't know, I people realize.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
That this doesn't happen to me anymore either though, So.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
If I send you a video on my phone, it'll
be regular, it'll be clear, no way. So I'm gonna
do it.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Do it during the break.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
I'm gonna try it, okay, because if that's the case,
that's a game changer, because for a while that was
just pettiness, meaning each side could make a quick implement,
you know, implement something to where that wouldn't happen, but
that would that would mean they're conceding to the other,
and it's a war Android Verse iPhone. All right, We've
got updates to traffic and weather coming your way right here,
right now, and there's Radio eight forty whas. I may
(07:54):
have spoke too soon, because as soon as I look
up here at the morning newscast from WKA, why are partners, Uh,
they're they're showing some roadways that look to be having
some issues with with traffic. So we'll get an update
on that coming up here in just a couple of
minutes with Bobby Ellis. But let's see the the the
YouTube NFL debut was on Friday, and that was the
(08:16):
Chiefs game in the Chargers and weird Friday Night game
that was played in Brazil. And also the fact that
it was on YouTube is odd. Keep in mind YouTube
the platform, not YouTube TV, which of course is a
TV provider. And I there's something about anything live being
on YouTube that still seems dare I say cheap? I
(08:39):
mean the broadcast was phenomenal as far as just the
production value. I mean, you had rich eyesen. I believe
Kurt Warner was the color analyst. And when you're sitting
in front of your TV, you really wouldn't know that
you're you know that you're using YouTube like people use
to watch really anything. So I don't know if they're
going to get into putting more live events on YouTube.
(09:01):
But there's nothing that gets attention, nothing close actually that
gets attention when it comes to live viewing in America
like NFL so seventeen point three million viewers tuned in live,
which of course set the record for YouTube's most watched
live stream. Ever, another sign that the NFL is top dog,
and viewers tuned in for more than two hundred and
(09:22):
thirty countries. And don't I don't know. I'm trying to
see if there's any plans for more games on YouTube,
because if you I mean, if you get from a
business standpoint like Netflix. I don't know if Netflix is
ever going to get into where they're bidding on having,
Hey we want Thursday night football, we want Sunday night football.
But they clearly did enough to where they got a
(09:43):
trial run, right like they had Christmas games last year.
I thought that was great. So I guess the you
know which you have to pay the NFL to get
the rights to broadcast two games on Christmas one game
like we had on Friday Night. I guess the payoff
is that it just brings more people to your platform.
YouTube need. Now it could be a situation where maybe
YouTube TV has a partnership. I mean, YouTube is the umbrella,
(10:05):
and of course Google owns YouTube. But I you know,
seventeen point three million viewers tuned in, and I assumed
that was a money maker for YouTube as far as
advertisers and whatnot. I mean, clearly it was. I don't
think you would do it for nothing, but we have
a lot. I've never seen sports have such a open
market as far as just hey we're gonna be on,
(10:27):
like the NBA. I mean what you have to pay,
like if you want, if you want to watch the
NBA regularly, which I don't know who would. It's not
a great product in the regular season what you'd have
to pay because you need so many different providers to
get it. Like it's crazy and I don't see it changing,
and it's it's not like you know people. To me,
it's not insanely difficult to where people can't figure it out.
(10:48):
But it shouldn't be so confusing to know, Okay, well game,
what are we doing here now? When it comes to
the NFL, I mean, I think the NFL, as far
as where games are when they are meaning where they
are on your TV, what app do you got to
open up on the roku and whatnot, the NFL is
so dominant that they could put it anywhere people will
find it because they care enough, like they have such
(11:11):
an invested interest in the NFL and other sports not
as much. All right, let's get to another update at
Traffick and Weather. We've also got a sports update coming
up with Scott, So stick around right here and there's
Radio eight forty whas. Thank you very much, Joe. It
is six thirty five here at News Radio eight forty
whas Coffee and Company with you Kententucky Anda's morning news.
(11:33):
So it looks like the accident that's causing some real delays.
And by the way, that looks like it's now the
delay is led over to New Albany. So if you're
heading into Louisville from New Albany on sixty four there
there is an accident that is causing some big time slowdown,
So just be advised to that. We'll get your next
update on traffic and weather coming up here in about
(11:55):
four minutes or so. But the story of the the
man who attempted to plan an assassination attack of President Trump,
who's representing himself, has that ever worked? I mean, I'm
sure there are people that have no legal experience that
have represented themselves have felt like they came out where
(12:16):
they made the right decision. But like in high profile
cases like this, I mean, this won't work well, right,
you can't. And it seems like more often than not,
when somebody does represent themselves in a case that maybe
isn't high profile because of the shenanigans that come with it,
it ends up becoming more high profile just because you
(12:38):
know it's not some typically see usually in a case
when somebody's facing some serious charges where it's going to
impact their life, Right, are they going to go away
from prison for the rest of their life? Are they
going to maybe be sentenced to death? You know, you'd
expect to have representation. I mean, even if you are
an attorney that is appointed by the state, right, you're
not maybe you don't have outside care council. I mean,
(13:02):
I feel like if you get into being a lawyer,
regardless if you're a public defender or not, if you're
if you're defending someone who is facing something like that,
I mean, you're gonna be at your best or at
least try to. And people who have never been an attorney,
it just it's to see all the delays and whatnot
because the judge ends of having to let them know
(13:23):
sort of how to do that. That part of it.
It's it's it's a hassle for sure, But again we'll
see if it works out. I did a little digging
just to see if there are any other high profile
cases where non lawyers represented themselves and ended up ended
up working out for them. Now Ted Bundy nineteen seventies
and eighties. Is that I did not know this, And
(13:45):
by the way, I've never as much as I do
love true crime, I've not watched the countless shows documentaries
out there about Ted Bundy just doesn't really move the
needle for me. But clearly they could. They could continue
to make documentaries, movies, specials about Ted Bundy and we'll
still watch. But it's one of those things where I
will admit ignorance didn't know it. If it's true that
(14:06):
he represented himself and he used his charm and knowledge
to delay proceedings and cross examine witnesses, but was he
I mean say it says here that he did win
himself more he went him, he won more time, but
ultimately he was convicted, so and he was executed. So
I guess he bought time. But as far as it
(14:26):
working out to where he was able to be found
not guilty, I mean didn't happen. And again I don't
think that's going to happen here with this guy. But hey,
he's got a shot. We'll see what he can do,
all right. If you are somebody that has been frustrated
about the current situation, when it comes to I guess
the current arrangement as far as how you get an
updated driver's license or a new driver's license or real ID,
(14:51):
you're not alone and I feel like every time you
hear about somebody needing to get a driver's license renewed
or whatever it may be, get a real ID, it's story.
The story is about it being a hassle and it
being frustrating. Now I know that there are some people
that have been able to do it and it hadn't
been an issue, and if that's that's the case, good
for you. I don't know as far as if they're
you know, if we asked ten people who've gone through
(15:11):
the process in the last year, how many would say
that it was great, it was terrible, or maybe in
between to where it wasn't it wasn't that big of
a pain. I really don't know. But there's enough that
have had bad you know, had major issues where it's
been a major headache to where the the request to
go back to the way it used to be done
(15:32):
is something a lot of people are bringing up, including
folks in Bullet County, and this story was that WKY.
Our partners talked to a state rep as well as
some other folks in the area, and the request to
go back to the I mean, when you return it
to this certain when it goes back to the county clerks.
(15:55):
I mean, that's the way it used to be, and
now for years it's not been that way. And I'll
be I don't think it's as simple as snapping your
fingers and we just go back to it and everything's okay.
But isn't it obvious, the clean and pretty clear at
this point the way it's set up, it's just it's
not working really at all. So Bullat County officials are
urging Kentucky to scrap this regional driver's license hub and
(16:18):
go back to letting the local county courthouses handle it.
And my thought is, who says no? And again, if
it was that easy, they'd probably do it, I would imagine.
But if in fact it's too much work to go
back to the way it used to be whenever there
weren't as many issues, well, how much work do we
have ahead of us to where the way you want
to do it your current system with this regional hub.
(16:41):
What kind of work are we looking at to get
that to where it's not such a pain in the
rear end for people? So Basher state leaders as well
have said that moving back would require rebuilding infrastructure and
it could take years. But there is a bill to
restore local licensing offices that failed. But it's going to
be reintroduced in the next session, and because of two things.
One the continuous issues that a lot of Kentuckians have
(17:03):
where they're doing something they're required to do, have a
driver's license, right, keep it updated, not let it expire,
and yet it's inconvenience them to where they've taken days
off work only did not get a license because of
a scheduling issue or having to drive somewhere hours away.
I mean, that's happened enough to where when it's reintroduced,
I wouldn't be shocked if you get a different outcome.
(17:24):
That's time around, and let's not act like this won't matter.
I mean, you've got the current situation where state employees
have been selling driver's license to legal immigrants who didn't
have to take a driver's test, that weren't even here legally,
that were paying a couple hundred dollars cash under the table.
And yet you've got Kentuckian citizens that have been inconvenienced
(17:45):
in a big way when it comes to just you know,
getting their driver's license updated, which they're required to do
by the state. So we'll see, but I said this earlier.
I feel like if any of the local news stations
in this state are looking for a story, just oh,
ask somebody about how big of a pain in the
rear end it was to get their driver's license renewed
or updated or a real ID. Because people have complaints,
(18:08):
that's for sure. And again, I know not everybody's had
a bad has had a terrible experience, but enough people
have to whear. It's a known thing that the way
in which it's currently set up with these regional hubs,
it ain't working all right. Trapping weather updates on the
way right here on news Radio eight forty whas. There's
no doubt that one of the biggest storylines heading into
the college football season this year was the debut of
(18:30):
Arch Manning, not as an official debut he's played, but
the starting quarterback the Arch Manning era at Texas. And
I'm fascinated by this for probably the same reason a
lot of other people are, is that I think it
would be impossible to truly evaluate Arch Manning without overthinking
it because he's a Manning and they've been saying for
many years now that he's going to be better than
(18:51):
both Peyton and Uncle Eli, and in his debut as
a starter against Ohio State, he was bad. I mean,
people can dress it up however they want, but he
wasn't good. Doesn't mean he's going to be terrible, but
that was he didn't look good. And he bounced back
with some impressive stats the other day against a believe
it was San Jose State President State one of those
two teams, and that was certainly something that he needed
(19:13):
to get some confidence going. But I just I think
he could. He could be subpar, and he'll still get
a chance in the NFL because they're just going to assume, well,
eventually he'll turn into him. He's a Manning, right, So
I don't I'm not anti arch Manning. You know, maybe
he ends up being great and he ends up coming
(19:34):
to the Colts. That'd be great, but a story. But
I've never been overly impressed. But I'm also not here
to say, oh, I've seen it. I've watched the tape.
He's a bum. It's not that, it's just I think
he's really tough to even as a fan, he's tough
to kind of really get a feel for. Okay, this guy,
look mean, he's a Manning. Yeah, And he's they talk
him up. He looks the part, but you know, the
results just haven't necessarily been there. But one of the
(19:54):
things that's been talked about recently with Arches an alleged
injury that apparently is not a I the coaching staff
says he's not injured, but video clips are going viral
of him throwing and showing disco clearly having some discomfort,
having some pain that he's dealing with. I guess maybe
we can't just read read his facial expressions and say that,
but he doesn't look comfortable at times when he throws
(20:15):
the ball and some and again this all ties back
to what I mentioned a moment ago, as far as
just the expectation of him when he wasn't playing well
and somebody noticed maybe some body movement or some body language. Oh,
we must be heart because I mean Arch arch Manning.
He wouldn't throw an interception. He wouldn't he wouldn't throw
an incomplete pass. He's arch Manning. So anyways, Steve Sarkeys,
and the head coach of Texas, is annoyed by those
(20:39):
insinuating that arch is injured because he claims that he's not,
and he talked about it at his press conference recently,
and this was just a really really weird interaction that
I can't quite like. This is just odd. I'll let
you hear for yourself.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
You're right with arch Manning seemed to be having some
throwing pains by the arch arch said that to you.
No oh, according to who, it just looked like he was.
He doesn't have any that is there an explanation to
why he was it looked like that.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
I've never filed I've never filmed any of you guys
when you're using the bathroom, so I don't know what
faces you make when you're doing that.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
No er what I've never like, where do we start?
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Here?
Speaker 1 (21:27):
A lot to unpack. One. He's offended and bothered and
if look, if there's no injury at all, and it's
become a story. I can actually understand how a coach
would be annoyed by that. I mean that, However, what
kind of response was that? What does that even mean?
What are you talking about? It's almost like you're let's
say you're in like a you know, you're you're in
(21:48):
a very heated screaming match with somebody and you're you're
hurling insults back at one another, and then somebody hits
you with one, and you're like, that didn't make sense.
It's like, I'm not offended, but like, what are you
talking about? Like, is there any explanation as to why
he looks like he's injured? I don't know. I don't
(22:08):
go watch you guys go to the bathroom. Is there
an explanation to why he was it look like that?
Speaker 2 (22:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
I've never filed I've never filmed any of you guys
when you're using the bathroom, So I don't know what
faces you make when you're doing that.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Huh, how quickly the sid there? Let's go to the
next question. Roger, yourop, but like what is that? What
does he mean? John?
Speaker 2 (22:28):
I mean, why would you look at me in the
bath Surely he could have come up with a better
example on the spot than using the bathroom.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
It's not an example. It's just nonsense. Like, what are
you talking? It's gibberish? What is that? It's insane.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
It's uncomfortable, is what it is.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
Yes, it was very uncomfortable. And look, some people have
gotten into using that and making the joke about because
Sarkisian is an alcoholic and he's that led to him.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
A look, I mean it's not funny, but I mean
I didn't I think I'm laughing because I didn't.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
I didn't know that. But sarcasian.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Well, but you know, let's again, let's say I mean
that that's I'm again. Ah, what do we do here?
Because John made me laugh and now I'm back to
you know.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
We can regroup in the break if we need one.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Well, yeah, it's just there are people making the joke
that he might be back on like the Booze because
