Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm gonna call it hazy sunshine. I don't care what
you say. I mean, you know, we're the sun is
trying to peek out behind some clouds right now here
on the backside of Churchill Downs. Good morning. I'm Tony
Chris along with Mayor Craig Greenberg, who's joining us again.
Kindly appreciate your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
It is always great to be with you, Tony, particularly
on the backside here. What a beautiful morning on this
one hundred and fifty first Kentucky Derby week.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Wow, you know is this your third derbys? Third Derby
is Mayor, That's what wow? I can count by and
by I know it is flying by. So tell us
who you who are we entertaining this week? And how
many more businesses are you going to bring here to
That is the plan and goal.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
You know, it's always a unique opportunity that we have
to bring people to Louisville that might not otherwise come
to Louisville to fall in love with our city and
our state. And so we have some folks that are
coming in from the entertainment industry. You know, Kentucky has
this great incentive program to film movies and TV shows here, right,
So we have some folks coming in that are in
that world, and then also some folks that own the

(01:05):
Louisville Bats that are getting ready to invest two hundred
and fifty million dollars in downtown Louisville in a whole
new living excuse me, living in hotel and restaurant venue
right next to the Slugger Field on that parking lot
between I sixty five and Slugger Field. And so we
want them to see what great excitement Louisville has Kentucky
Derby Week and how it's going to spill out to

(01:25):
the entire year.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
It's really interesting. And I give a lot of credit
to NBC Television who's been doing the Derby for a
long long time now. The way they kind of put
the romance oh yeah of the Derby, it really finishes
off and makes it. It's a good look for Louisville.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
You know, they do a wonderful job. They know, a
great partner for Churchill downs in the Derby and for
our city. You're right, I mean, they have us certainly shining.
I haven't seen as many NBC broadcasts. I've been coming
to the Derby for a long time myself, but I
remember during the COVID year when I did in comme
and was watching the broadcast, you just felt so proud
to be a Louivillion, to be a Kentuckian. And that's

(02:07):
what it's all about. It's and I what I love
about the Derby is that, And it brings our community
together every year and we shine, we look great, the
city looks great, but also you know, something to be
proud of and bring the city together, you know.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
As well as I do. There were probably some people
and I remember this anyway, twenty years ago and even less,
about Churchill getting too big and expanding, and they got
they're going to be doing all this entertainment stuff and
it's not real horse racing and everything else. Well, of
course horse racing is a huge part of it, but

(02:40):
also they saw something that a lot of people maybe
didn't do, you know, And and and they grew with
the you know, having the concerts and all the different
things that they did here, and they were right for
doing it, and I think that were the winners as
a result.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Absolutely, everybody's looking for really unique experiences. I mean, just
think about last year with one hundred and fiftieth and
that was certainly a bucket list item, as the Derby
is for so many people around the world, and that's
because of the horses. It's also because of the experience.
It's because of the people watching, the great attire that comes,
and all the different unique places around the track that
you can go. You can come to the backside like

(03:17):
we are in the morning, and then you can be
anywhere in the track in this really unique thing area
in the afternoon. And so Churchill Downs is doing it right.
We're very fortunate to have them in our community.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Do you have any tourism ideas as far as the
bucket list? That's a good way to put it when
it comes to people coming here. I mean, you know,
some people get hooked on it. They go, well, we
got to come back again, you know, a year after year.
But I do think that it is one of those
things that people say, I want to go to the

(03:48):
Kentucky Derby, like I want to go to a World
Series game, or I want to go to the right It's.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Exactly just like that, and you can only do that
in Louisville. That's one of the really unique things about
the Derby that I think sometimes in Louisville. For granted,
is this happens every year. There really aren't that many
cities that have a Super Bowl in their city every
single year. And it's really the tail end of our
Kentucky Derby Festival where we have weeks of wonderful events

(04:13):
and then we do a back to back to back
Super Bowl with Derby, Oaks and Derby. There's nowhere else
like it. I know, Indianapolis has the Indy five hundred
every year, Augusta, Georgia has the Masters.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
You know.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Beyond that, there aren't too many places and they those
are different, though this is Derby is truly unique.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, I guess you know, like like
you mentioned, you know, race cars or a race car,
you know, locations and those kind of things. But even
that could change at some place. It's not indian like
the Indy five hundred or something like that, but we've
seen some.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
And we have one hundred and fifty years of tradition. Yeah,
and with the Derby Festival, the events that they're doing,
with the mini marathon and the parade and the steamboat race,
it's just such a unique time for our city.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Mayor Craig Greenberg with me this morning, just real quickly,
May I wanted to get into a little bit about
bond proceeds, Metro Council, Jefferson County Public Schools, tell us
what this whole thing's about.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Here's what's going on. So something called an industrial revenue bond.
It's it's a very common economic development incentive tool that
cities and states use to help support companies that are
investing lots of money and creating lots of jobs in
our community. And so Churchill Downs has been using that
for decades, just as many other companies around the city

(05:28):
and state use that tool to help create new jobs
in our city. And so it's a way that can
help support them with the financing and the project. And
then where they're they ben instead of paying taxes directly
like you and I on our home, they pay what's
called payments in lieu of taxes. It's a contractual obligation.
And so there have been some discussions around that. I'm
talking to Churchill. We all want to support Churchill investing

(05:51):
a billion dollars in our community, continuing to grow this
iconic part of our city. We wanted to grow. We
want the Derby to be here for another one hundred
and fifty years and continue to be the premier event
in all of sports and culture. And at the same
time we want to support our school system and the city.
So we're having very productive conversations even this week on
Derby week. We'll get back at it again next week
and I'm confident there's going to be a win win

(06:12):
solution to support Churchill, support Jefferson County Public schools and
the city as well.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Well. We hope you have a safe Derby obviously and
have a great time.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Thanks so much, Tony. Its appreciate you again.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
All right, thank you, thanks again. Greig Greenberg, our mayor
