Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, it's my favorite time and day of the year
when it comes to the Kentucky Derby because it's Kentucky
Oaks Day, the Lilies for the phillies, and I have
the most beautiful phillies right in front of me right now.
I have Miss America Abbey Stockard from Alburn University. Oh
my goodness, hair, let me make sure I get my

(00:21):
mind there. Let's try this. Can you say that again?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Are you go?

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Roll?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
What? No?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Roll over? Tide?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Correct?

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Abby? How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I'm doing great. I'm so excited to be here. Thank
you for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Well, thank you for coming to Kentucky and representing Miss America.
Tell me where this all began for you? Into the
pageants and everything.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yes, yeah, so I didn't grow up competing. I didn't
start until my freshman year of college, and it was
because I was looking to fulfill financial need and my family.
The Miss America organization is a scholarship program, so I
entered completely on a whim, but I ended up falling
in love with the organization and everything that it's stood for.
It has been life changing for me, and I've also
received over eighty nine thousand dollars intuition scholarships. So I

(01:07):
will be graduating with my nursing degree completely debt free.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
That is so awesome. Now, what convinced you to do it?
Other than your beautiful lady, I mean, obviously.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Big, Well, it really was the scholarship money. And I've
been a dancer also my entire life, and so I
love performing on a stage and I knew competing in
this organization was another opportunity to do so. So that
the scholarship money, the amazing friendships that are formed as
a result of competing so many things, but also the
service initiative. Every contestant is required to have a platform,

(01:38):
and it's really just anything that you're passionate about. Mine
assistic fibrosis awareness because of my very best friend. So
this organization gave me a voice and it allowed me
to truly feel like I can make a difference and
enact change outside of the state of Alabama.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
What's that story about with your friend?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, so she was born with cystic fibrosis. We got
put in the same third grade class and we've been
inseparable ever since. So much so we're actually rooming together
in Auburn next year. As I finished my nursing degree.
But growing up I saw some of the devastating effects
this disease had on Maddie's mental and physical health, and
one day when we were in the hospital together, I
made a promise to her that I would do everything

(02:13):
in my power to fight for her and to fight
for others that are living with the sea. So as
Miss America, this year, I get to be a national
ambassador for the CF Foundation, help expand the advocacy initiatives
and hopefully get closer and closer to finding a cure.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
You were with the Global Game Changers. What yesterday?

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yes right, yesterday?

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Tell me about that.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Yeah, so, Global Game Changers is one of our incredible
Miss America partnerships, and so I went to their office.
We had some kids from an elementary school, and my
favorite part of the day was doing a little dance
session with the kids, you know, because dancing's right up
my alley. They loved it. But also we got to
talk about the importance of pursuing a healthy lifestyle, not
just physical activity, but you know, hydration, healthy eating, good sleep,

(02:57):
and Global Game Changes. Their entire mission is about powering
students to find their own superpower because we all have
unique gifts and talents, and so yesterday I got to
help identify those talents and show kids how they could
combine that with their hearts to truly make a difference.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
You're so smart. Oh my gosh. I mean, I'm just
I'm you need to go up of nursing. Maybe you
know something of that nature.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
We'll see what the Lord has.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I like going the way you said that too. Also tonight,
you're going to be at the Unbridled Excited about that?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Oh, I'm so excited. It's an incredible honor that I
get to be there, not just because of the glamour,
which I love, but also for the good it does.
You know. It's raising funds for local charities that are
doing incredible work across the Kentucky area. I'll also be
dripped out in diamonds from Genesis Diamonds, so I'll be
sparkling from head to toe, but also getting to support
a cause whose mission aligns with the heart of Miss America.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Man, she has got it, Dawn Heather French Henry.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Great to be back on the backside track side. I
love it, isn't she great? I love bringing my little
Miss America's sister every year to Derby so she can
see all things that are great about Kentucky. And then
to also promote some of our partnerships with like Global
Game Changers, which is an educational nonprofit headquartered right here
in Louisville, but is nationwide a free platform for elementary

(04:14):
school teachers. But Abby's been doing such a great job
this week. It's a tiring week. You know, we're out
here early mornings. But you see the sunrise over the
Twin Spires, you see the horses breezing. There's nothing pure
Kentucky like being here during the Kentucky Derby time and
every year it's just like a renewed spirit for me.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
You know, you have really made your platform since you
became Miss America and used it for so much good
and it's just always a delight to see you and
what you represent for the common world.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Ah, thank you. Well. You know, like Abby having a
platform like Miss America to be able to expose issues
that you care about and to be able to create awareness.
Her with CISTI fibrosis, me with veterans and still twenty
five years later, Yes, this is my twenty fifth anniverse.
I missed America, but twenty five years later, still pounding
the pavement for our nation's heroes and their families. I'll
always be the daughter of a disabled Vietnam veteran, so

(05:08):
that's never going to go away. That title never expires.
So every day is a day that we can still
make a change and uplift those who've served our country.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
You don't look twenty five. Oh yeah, my gosh, I'll
have what she's having. What do you think? Huh?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
You know, I just try to stay around the young sisters.
So I'm at least in this millennium. I'm at least
in this century, which is nice.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
That's that's exactly right. Well, Abby, is just a delight
to bring you in. And you know what you you
make Auburn look really good.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
I'll take it. So you're going in nursing, right, that's
what that's what you said.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yes, I've done one year and then I'm taking your office,
Miss America, and then Auburn's holding a spot for me
in their next cohort this fall when I give up
my crown.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Well, have a wonderful Derby and Oaks day today, and
I know you're going to be seeing the cancer survivors
in the in the walk. It would be really really nice. Well,
thank you for so much what you're doing. And uh boy,
you make me, you make my heart feel proud. Well
bought the young people today in America.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
She gives us a lot of hope, doesn't she yes,
she yes, I love it. The future of Miss America
is bright, all right.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
And so are you. God love you, Heather, Thank you.
Good to see Yabby. All right. That's Miss America and
