Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, we're back here the Churchill Downs. Nathan Patrick
Stayton is joining is. If you don't know him by
that name, he might know him as the slang term
of pimp juice. Oh that's been a long time, Okay,
you you but you were a member of iHeart and

(00:20):
Premier Networks for fifteen years, yeah, ten years there in.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Louisville, and went to a little started in Louisville, went to.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
LA So you were you were on the what the
Fox or something of that.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
I started as an intern on the Fox? Yeah, yeah,
I got on Kiss FM. I was on there on
there and I was running board for WHS like the
whole time, filling in for Scott every once in a while. Yeah,
do the weekend stuff, Ron and Mel show.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Been a lot. Well. So I saw a miracle about
three days ago, and Scott, you know, talked to you
yesterday and I was like, is that Nathan, And all
of a sudden you get you know, and he looks
like Nathan, but he doesn't look like Nathan. He's an
adult now. But I was just like, wow, it's great
to see you, and like, what are you doing here?

(01:10):
Because I didn't nobody knew what you were doing after
you know, you weren't with the premiere and iHeart and
everything else. So you are a blacksmith now, yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
A full fledged failure, trimming horse feet, putting on shoes,
helping them do what they do.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
What is how do you? How does one get into that? So?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
I was in LA working in radio, and I would
always watch horse racing and being from Kentucky, like it's
just in our blood, and I really wanted more of
a challenge. And I was like thirty three at the time,
and I knew I wanted to work more with my
hands and outside, and I've always loved horses. So I
signed up for horse shoming school and Sacramento just to
see if I would like it, and loved it. So

(01:51):
I put in my two weeks notice in radio, and
so I started doing horseshooing.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
There's a full on school for Yeah, there's schools all over.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
There's an amazing school here in Kentucky, one of the
top into the nation, but I went to one out
in California.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
So what is it in trade school?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Okay, So horse comes in and goes I need a
new pair of kicks.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
That's a smart horse. You have a seat. Let's try these.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, so you assess their legs, the confirmation, how they look,
how they travel, that's going to tell you how to
trim the foot to make it level and comfortable for
the horse. And yeah, you're good. And I'll say I
couldn't hear anything. So then you depending on the discipline
of the horse or what it's doing. And sometimes some
need shoes, some don't. All the race horss need shoes

(02:37):
for traction and support. So uh, yeah, you you every
horse is different, every legs different, and you do tailor
it to that.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
So the hoof is basically like a big long fingernail. Yeah,
essentially that's what you do. Wow, that's that's incredible.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Tell how did you are you with just with Bill
Mott or are you and his son?

Speaker 2 (02:56):
So I worked for Bill Mott and his son Riley Mott.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, you're doing horse shoes. Yeah, holy cow.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, I got some good steak sources running. Bill's got
sovereignty running.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
So do you do sovereignty shoes?

Speaker 2 (03:08):
We are, we're timing it. He's he was done right
before he came to Kentucky. So we're daily assessing that.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
What's that like when you're when you're up next to
any pressure.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
You No, I find it really calming actually, Like it's
really there's something special to that to those horses, like
they're so you're you're like with royalty. It's kind of
nice feeling.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
It's really cool, like fitting Michael Jordan with some Nikes
or something like that.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, you know, it's like an ultimate honor.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah right, So the shoes not every race, just no,
a race source is going to have a shoe on
every race. Yeah no, I'm saying, do you have to
put new shoes on them every race?

Speaker 2 (03:49):
You do it every four to six weeks.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
The people's wonder growth.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
So just a lot of some trainers like to show
him right before a race to get the foot just
you know, down and out of its way.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
So I think the should paint like air. Jordan's right,
Get married, Jordan's so so dude. When you look back
at your time in radio, yeah that that you are,
And I want to ask you how old you are
on the radio because I just remember you sort of
a babyface sort.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Of I'm thirty nine, okay, thirty nine started.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
So so when you look back in your life and
and you're married now right, Yeah, yeah, your wife from
No cow So cal.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, you told me that.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
So you look back and you're like running the board
for radio, and now all of a sudden, you're next
to a derby horse ready to.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Throw some shoes on. Won't my where? What is your
mindset now at thirty nine years old? And and what's
your outlook for the future.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Just keep rolling with it and enjoy every day and
thankful and I'm just happy to be here, Like this
is amazing. It's really hard to believe for me. Yeah,
because I met I got back here by meeting a
guy to red light a few years ago. I was
here in town on vacation and I was I was
a farrier Mountain, Oregon, that's where I live now, and
I just saw his truck and I went up to
him and like, Hey, I'm in town for a couple

(05:01):
of days. Can I come and ride with you? He
called me. He was an older guy and needed some help.
He was like, Hey, I can definitely use you if
you want to come back next summer and work with
me all year. So I've did a three year apprenticeship
with him. He unfortunately passed away last year. So the
business has kind of falling into my lap and I'm
rolling with you.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
They haven't believed that people are brought across our past
for a reason. We're not meant to understand. And there's
some pre determined in our lives that happened for a reason.
And you're a classic example. That's so inspiring.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
What so with Mott? MM, do you have some other
trainers that you're working with just just right now?

Speaker 2 (05:41):
I want to say that's the best. They're incredible and
I'm lucky to be there.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, he's great, He's a great guy. What what do
you like about sovereignty in this race?

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I mean powerful, He's got a strong hard on him
that guy wants. He's a dominant horse.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah. And uh, and you've you've seen journalism which is
kind of the talk of m And what do you
think about him?

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Good looking horse?

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Yeah, well let's see what happens, all right. That's that's great. Uh,
to see you in YouTube man, than it really is
really really good air joining us here today and it's
just a pleasure to to see you. Man. You as
were a great guide and still are. Thank you. Really cool.
