Speaker 1 (00:00):
One of my best buds in radio also is Joe Elliott.
We were back to back back in the day, Joe Mo,
what do you know?

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Oh man, those were fun days. We really had such
a good time off the air. You know, we had
a deal where Tony did the sports talk show from
seven to nine and then my show was nine to midnight.
But I wish people could have heard some of the
conversations we had off the air, because we talked about
sports and politics and pop culture and whatever else and
just had a great time. Those were great days, Tony.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Do we argue over Pete Rose? I can't remember.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I think everybody's argued over Pete Rose for the last
thirty years. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
I don't know. I'm the only guy on the planet
that thinks that he still shouldn't be in So sorry
Reds fans, but you know, there are problems with the
people that had power like Rose to maybe get a
guy in the ninth inning. You know, he said he
never bet on his own team and all these kind
of things, But the problem is he owed a lot

(00:58):
of money back in those days. So I won't get
into that, and so well, you know, the pen.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
See, we can't we can't stop. We just we keep
arguing about these things. I've really sort of changed my
mind on this. I think the and I know a
lot of people didn't like it, but I think what
Commissioner Manford did was was essentially the right thing to do.
He's gone now, he can't affect baseball. I don't have
a problem with him being in the Hall of Fame,
but you don't want him in baseball anymore. I know
a lot of people didn't like the most recent decision.

(01:24):
To me, that was that kind of made sense.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
All right, let's talk. Let's take a break. Got to
take a break for some traffic and weather on the
tents here, and when we come back, we're all talk
about how you got the job that el Metso had
and Doug mcklvin, because I think, you know, our paths
have been somewhat similar in you know, either blind luck

(01:48):
or just you know, being there at the right time.
So we'll discuss with Joe Elliott here on news Radio
eight forty whas. Good morning, I'm Tony Cruz along with
Joe Elliott, who had had a long, long career at
news Radio eight forty whas. You were at HAS before
I was what year did you come in?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, I actually came in nineteen eighty eight. It was
one of those deals where Gary Bruce, who used to
was the program director many years ago. I was looking
for something and Gary said, I have nothing, but if
you want to be the eleventh man on a ten
man team, it wor maybe once a month, you know,
I'll sign you up. And I said, sold, let's do it.
And I just sort of and you did the same thing.

(02:30):
We just sort of kept pushing, you know. We never
said no when somebody asked us to do something, and
here we are.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Well, that's right, that's right.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
I was telling the audience earlier this morning, pro prior
to the tornado warnings that we had that was unexpected
that for me, I just bugged skip Eseic nine out
of ten work days, saying I wanted this job every
time he came out. I mean i'd be sometimes I
had waited until six or six thirty for him to
come out, because man, you're just bugging me. I go,

(03:01):
I know, I want you to know how much I
want this gig. I think I just worn him down.
But it worked, you know, it worked out, so you.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Know, absolute fun. You got to go chase what you want.
That's what he used to say to me. Is this
going to be another put me in coach conversation? I said,
yes it is. Let's let's do this, Let's make this happen.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
That's exactly right. But he was also a great program
director too.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
He was terrific.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
He gave me and you gave us both a real
opportunity which we were fortunate enough to be able to
make something of. But without Skippy, I'm not sure that
would have happened.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah, he was a guy because he knows for most people,
if you're a producer, you're and you're thirty two years old,
you want to do something more than just produce in
most cases like that.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Right, And I was a host, I had been had
been hosting. I wasn't producing, but I really wanted I
wanted to do talk every day and had the chance
to do that. But this is really much more about
you today than it is about me. This is a
great run for you twenty one years on the morning
show and what seven or eight years on the sports
talk show?

Speaker 1 (04:07):
It was about almost nine if not not Okay, I think, yeah,
this is it's just.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
A this is an incredible run for you and and
this is this is your day. I just want to
I just want to commend you for such great service
and even today, I mean, this is supposed to be
your day, but we have weather, Tony's going to weather.
We're checking on everything, and even though it's it's you know,
it's not Jefferson County. Tony is up to speed on

(04:33):
all of this, telling people in a ray Wick or
wherever exactly what the situation is. So you know, we're
still keeping that front and center. And I just appreciate
what you do.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Well, that's why we're supposed to do.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
I mean, that's absolutely part of the job as well,
you know, and I think that Joe, you and I
agree with I know you do, because we wanted the shows,
but the shows weren't about us. We always right, you know,
we love Kentucky, We love you know, Kentucky and Indiana. We

(05:04):
love all the people. And you know, you can ask
tough questions without trying to be look at me, ask
a tough question or something like that age, you know,
And that's what a lot of media, you know, kind
of it does today. Now you've got guys that are
just focusing on you know, being the host or whatever
and never surrendering or never admitting they're wrong and all

(05:24):
this kind of stuff. And I think it's kind of
a shame, you know, because everybody's wrong at some point.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
It's all about the heat. You know, we're trying to
get people, like you say, look at me. Sometimes though,
if you just let people talk, they will tell you
more than you could ever get from them if you
badger them.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Mean really that's true. I know, I know nobody believes
that anymore. And it's all about clicks and and you know,
you want to do something that calls attention to I mean,
I get all of that, but really, if you if
you really want to learn something, if you want to
get inside somebody's head and understand where they are, let
them talk and you know, follow up on what they say.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Well, or you just go to chat gpt in already
learn the answer, so you know, just study for it anymore.
I don't know, I don't know if we're going to
just be all in the cocoons or whatever the case
may be. But you know, I've enjoyed our friendship for
a long long time and everything that you've brought to
this radio station, and you've been a lot to me.
And I don't if anybody wanted to look at guys

(06:28):
when we disagreed, which was not very often at all. Yeah,
I think it was a little piece of the Americano,
you know, just like Okay, you have your say, but
you know, we don't agree, but it but it's like okay,
what's for dinner?

Speaker 3 (06:43):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (06:44):
We would disagree sometimes. I remember there was one and
I don't even remember what the argument was about, but
I remember the next day our program director at the time,
Rick Belcher, said, Man, you guys, you got this was
not you guys were really disagreeing about this because you
guys were way over time and stuff. But I mean
we never on the area.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, well we have some of them are Yeah, we
combine it well.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
We never took it personally, and we always enjoyed it.
And you know, I'm I'm still I do fill in
for Terry in the morning show and still do some
Saturday morning stuff, So I'm still around here. And it's
not like any of any of us are dying or anything.
I mean, you and I can still be friends and
keep in touch and all that kind of stuff, and
I know some good things are going to happen. If
I'm not being too personal, What's what's ahead for Tony

(07:26):
Cruz after today.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Whatever, wherever the Lord leads, is what I like to say.
And people can roll their eyes at it if they one.
But you know, I'm good, you know, we we We've
prepared for this for quite a while. And the first
thing I say is, well, first of all, sleep.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Right, not getting up at three thirty in the morning
every morning and.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Be three ten, three to three ten, and you know what,
I woke up and a lot of times at two,
you know, two fifteen or something like that, just for
whatever reason, and say I'll just go go ahead and
get up and go in sure. And so I think
sleep is the first order. And then we're going to
go to Montana here in a few weeks and we're
looking forward to that. We're going to go to Sedona

(08:11):
with one of our sons, see the grandkids more. And
so there's a lot of great things that are going on.
And I'm you know, going to do a little bit
of some things I want to do with some of
our members of.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Our church, I you know, outstanding.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Yeah, there's there's a lot of elderly people that need
to be visited, you know. And sometimes times people say,
I don't have time. Sometimes we don't have time. Sometimes
we do have time, but we'd rather, you know, not
make it. So whatever the.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Case may be.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
You know, if you can find somebody that's lonely and
you know, just give just listen to them and listen
to their stories, that's that's the other thing. You can
learn a lot from a lot of other people with
the wisdom that they have.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
So that's no doubt about that. And that's really a sert.
But there are a lot of people out there who
just just keep in touch with somebody could do both
of you a world of good. I think that's a
great I think that's a great thing to say. So.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
And then if but that didn't work out, I'll just
drive a truck or whatever the case may be. You know,
I ain't too proud to do whatever. But but I'm ready.
I'm ready to get out of radio.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
That way, Well, no, I can understand the business has
changed so much. Certainly I can understand that. Boy, can
I understand that?

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Well, I mean I have no problem with what you
know is going on. It's just you know, you kind
of know when you've given it your best shot and
you want to you don't want to leave out, you know,
just batting point eight nine.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Right, Life is kind of about seasons. You know.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
You start getting down at one ninety three and you're going, okay, man,
maybe I've lost it.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Well, you'd rather you'd rather leave a little early than
to stay too long.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Right, That's exactly right, that's.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
No doubt about that, Joe.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
It's great to talk to you, my man. I love you.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
I always appreciate it. We'll see how the Grill Masters
a little later today, that's right. I know Tony and
Dwight will be out there and you'll be out there,
and we're looking forward to that.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
That's exactly right. We're looking very much forward to it,
and we're thankful that we're going to be talking to
the people there with the Grill Masters supply and some
good vittals as well. So that's coming up here on
