Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, Joel Malcolm for wj Ando dot com and we're
talking movies. Hamp Erstine, the movie guy from Pombe chartspaper
dot com is with us and Hap I got a
bit of a surprise from you. I didn't even realize
it was out yet.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Oh yeah, Well, there's a new Karate Kid in town,
as the much cherish franchise returns to theaters for a
new generation. The series began to refresher memory back in
nineteen eighty four with a very young Ralph Macio as
Daniel LaRusso, trained in the art and philosophy of karate,

(00:34):
and of course by the wily mister Miago, who was
played by Pat Marita, who passed away in two thousand
and five, but it still shows up briefly in this
new movie, Karate Kid the Legends. Legends is the first
of the franchise to arrive in theaters since twenty sixteen,
almost a decade, following several sequels and a popular Netflix

(00:58):
series Cobra Kai Anyway. The new movie centers on a
young Chinese boy, Lee Fong played by appealing, agile kick
ass Ben Wang, who is forced to relocate from Beijing
to New York City. When his doctor mom that's ming
Wan Nette ming now Ween is transferred there, Lee says

(01:19):
goodbye to his dojo sonse Mister Han played by the
very crafty Jackie Chan nice to include him in the
Big Apple. Lee meets a former Golden Gloves boxer ironically
named Victor, turned pizzeria owner and falls hard for his daughter, Mia,

(01:40):
the appealing Sadie Sadie Stanley. Now. When Victor gets knocked
out in a boxing tournament trying to win back money,
he owes the mob. Lee has to commit to be
joined into the Five Burroughs No Holds Barred boxing contest. Now,

(02:02):
so mister Han flies to New York to train him,
and he actually enlists the aid of Dan L. Russo Yeah,
played by Machio. They found Ralph Machio somewhere who gives
his crash course in karate Credit at Legends is probably
predictable stuff, but it should appeal to fans of the
series and anyone who enjoys martial arts. It arrives in

(02:25):
theaters this weekend, and I think he should make some
most fans. So now you may do you like the series?
You're like this one?

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah? I like the first two I think there was
a third one, not and there was a fourth one.
There was a fourth one too, but I'm talking about
there were three originals in the eight act and I
like the first two of those. Now you mentioned h yeah,
they found Ralph Machio somewhere. But hasn't he been doing
Cobra Kai. He's been on Cobra Kai. Right, I don't
watch it, but I understand he's been on that Ralph Maccio.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Okay, I didn't realize that.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Actually, yeah, yeah, he's been Inilly Zapka too, who played
the him? Well, no, but Billy Zapka also in the
Cobra Kai series. Uh. He was the antagonist in the
original Karate Kid. Uh is is he in this at all? No?
He's not in this? Is he?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
No? No? No?

Speaker 1 (03:18):
All right? You gotta get a little Zabga in your life.
The other thing is it's interesting they brought Jackie Chan
into this one because Jackie Chan was uh. Now, a
lot of Karate Kid fans I maybe didn't you know,
the original fans didn't look too kindly to the last
one they made with Jackie being the sense Uh so,
is there.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Like a like a break if you're if you're a
purist about it all.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
It was a problem is there is there a tie
in at all with that one in this one besides
Jackie Chance.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
I mean, the Jackie chan character is the same.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
That's it. That's it. There's no tie to Will Smith's
kid or any of that stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
No, no, no, no, jad No, Jayden doesn't make it. I
think we reject him.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
All right, Okay, that's all you have for us at theaters.
There's only one other new movie at theaters, and I
will talk about it in a little bit, but I
know you have.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Okay, but I've got some good streamers. Okay, We're unlikely
to get another Indiana Jones movie, so we might as
well settle for director gud Richie's knockoff called Fountain of Youth,
especially since it stars John Krasinski and they always welcome
Natalie Portman. He plays a glib art thief, Luke Purdue,

(04:33):
and she plays his more straight lay sister, Charlotte, a
London museum curator, at least she is briefly, until his
art robbery ways get her fired from her job early on,
and she reluctantly joins her brother in a convoluted search
for the title Fountain that may hold the key to
eternal life. Getting to that probably mythic fountain involves stealing

(04:57):
six Grandmaster paintings, solving some obscure puzzles, and hopping around
the globe from England to the North Atlantic to the
Great Pyramids of Giza. Yeah, somehow Richie actually got permission
to film inside the actual Egyptian burial monuments. The film
jump starts with a really terrific extended sequence involving a

(05:21):
motorcycle chase through London, followed by intrigue on a train
and the raising of Elucitania, where one of the sought
after paintings has long been buried. The Fountain of Youth
isn't a movie you want to think too much about,
but if you go with the flow, there's plenty of

(05:43):
entertainment value in it in this maybe a little too
long two hour plus running time, And speaking of plus,
it streams on Apple TV Plus service. See how I
did that? Good news if you already have a subscription,
But if you have to sign up, I wouldn't bother.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
So guy Ritchie huh is is? But is this this
is a little bit different than the kind of movie
he does, right? Isn't this kind of a comedy? Is
this kind of a little bit of a romantic comedy?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
It's it's definitely got a little little tongue in cheek
and definitely as it was a lot to in Nanna Jones,
maybe a little bit of National Treasures too. So yeah,
it's not the most original movie in the world, but
it's enjoyable and the two leads are worth worth of watching.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
So I'm looking at his uh, at his list of
movies here, and yeah, it's definitely well directing and writing
in two different you know, he's written some different kind
of stuff, but his directing, yeah, a little bit different.
What was the last thing I saw? I did, Oh,
The Covenant, And he's done movies since then. But I
saw The Covenant, the war movie, the uh and uh.

(06:49):
I like that one that wasn't a wasn't a comedy
at all.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
That's not as usual either.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, true lox. I never saw those old
one rock and Roller and lockstock and smoking barrels.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
I know that's where he smooking barrel that's where it
all began.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah, yeah, I never said he.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Was working with Madonna for a while.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I think he was with her and either together or
married or something.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
They're married at one point.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Yes, right, okay, and tell me what else you have
on streaming?

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Well, my sort of art house pick this week is
an unnecessary sequel to twenty eighteen's comic romp A Simple Favor.
This one's titled Simply Another Simple Favor. It again stars
Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick as frenemies reunited when Lively
as the wiley Emily Nelson is released from prison and

(07:42):
poised to marry honkey Italian guy from the Mob family. Now,
much to mystery novelist Stephanie's mother's surprise, that's Kendrick. She's
asked to be Emily's maid of honor and whisked off
to the romantic Isle of Capri for this DestinE Nation wedding.
But formerly can tie the knot. A couple of new

(08:04):
murders occur, and there are scenes of an eclipse side
drop that someone is bound to be pushed off to
his or her death. Director Paul Faig is back at
the helm of another Simple Favor, and he is in
a more tongue in cheek mode than with this one
that has a few more twists than it deserves. It

(08:24):
turns out Emily has a couple of sisters, one of
whom may not be dead as expected. In any event,
it gives Lively a chance to play multiple roles and
in kind of a lively see how I did that
a Lively fashion. I'd say go for the performers, including
a wonderful supporting turn kind of overwrought by Alison Janney,

(08:50):
and then for the stunning views of Capri. The plot, well,
not so much, another simple favor lost out for a
theastcal release. It's on prime video. About what it deserves,
I'd say.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
All right, there is I mentioned earlier a movie in theaters,
new in theaters this weekend, and it's a horror film.
It's called it's called Bring Her Back. Now. I didn't
really know what this was about, so here is the synopsis.
A brother, a brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual

(09:29):
at the secluded home of their new foster mother. That's it.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
There you go, it's all you got.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, Well, here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
It's not going to draw me to it.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
But here's what I got.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
This is directed by the brothers Philippo. I think I'm
kidding it right, Danny and Michael Philippo. They made a
name for themselves with a movie back in twenty twenty
two that I really enjoyed called Talk to Me. It
was one of those eight this might be A twenty
four to two, but no, A twenty four is coming
out with a lot of these little lower budget you know,
they did a lot the lower budget horror films and whatnot,

(10:03):
but talk to Me was one of those. And that
was about the group of friends that came upon this
embalmed hand. This it's like an arm with it, and
they would hold it and it would basically conjure up
visions and spirits and whatnot and all hell breaks is
from there. Great movie. It was really well done. The
acting was incredible in that one.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
So, I mean, A twenty four does a lot of
the horror pictures. But they were also did a nora
that was this year's surprise win at the Oscars.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Yeah, yeah, I like Donorra. I like Donra too. That
was and Noora was cool because it had comedy to
it right it It was okay.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Yeah, I just didn't see it as the best picture
of the year.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
But yes, no, no, I don't know if I would
have either, But anyway, this because of the Philippo or
Philip however you say their name is Michael and Danny Philippo,
the brothers directing this capo. Maybe Sally Hawkins? Why do
I know her name? Sally Hawkins is in this? I
know her name.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Why do I know her? Let me look?

Speaker 2 (11:05):
She's British and she's made a few good films. She
made one with Woody Allen and one with Yeah, oh
that guy you know? Yeah, But I can tell you
how I know you'd recognize her face.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
She's in Wonka. She's in the Wonka recent Wonka musical
from two years ago. She's uh, she's one of the
She and the and the guy their boyfriend girlfriend and
they run the She's like the protagonist in that movie,
or the antagonist in that movie where Willy ends up
young WILLI ends up staying there and then they bill

(11:37):
him for all this stuff and he can't pay, so
they basically keep him there. And I forget her character's name,
but yeah, she's in that anyway. Who cares?

Speaker 2 (11:46):
That one is faded in my memory.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
I love that movie. I thought it was great. My
twelve year old daughter loves it too. When she was
ten when it came out. But we both we both
enjoyed that Wonka movie. Oh what else I wanted to
tell you about? So I saw Mission Impossible the Final Reckoning. Okay,
I gotta tell.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
You're about to beat me up about what won the
spot last week.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
That's right, that's right. I forgot about that, thank you.
I mean, it wasn't ready for it. It happened. Wasn't
even close Stitch just Lelo and Stitch.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
No, it wasn't. It wasn't.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
But that being said, that being said, Mission Impossible did
pretty well. It did very well. Tom cues Tom Cruise
put out a put out a statement thanking the people
of you know, working at the you know, working at
the studios and even the people you know working at
the theaters and all of this. He put out like
a statement, and I was reading, I was like, that's
kind of classy, because keep in mind, he's the not

(12:43):
only the star, he's the executive producer of this movie.
At this point, he's he's executive producing his own films,
doing his own stunts.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
Well, he's the reason that it happens, right, And now
I'm starting to al so weaking about not not finishing
up the series. I think he's talking about doing another one.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Well, I didn't want to go away any spoilers, but
it is possible. So yeah, I always I will say
that I did enjoy Dead Reckoning more than Final Reckoning,
just for some reason. And I don't know why, but
but if I'm working it was a good movie. I
think the reason is. And this isn't a spoiler. People
will probably figure this out by now, and you mentioned

(13:20):
kind of alluded to it last week. They tie in
a lot of loose ends from earlier films. In fact,
they go all the way back to the first Mission
Impossible in the nineties, and I don't even know if
I watched him that early, so you know, there was
kind of stuff that I was like, Okay, if I
knew this whole series, I'd probably enjoy this more. So

(13:41):
that might be what it is. I enjoyed it though.
It was a good movie. The stunts are great.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
It's a little long.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Come on, it is long. It doesn't have to be
that long. But yeah, I you know, for today's standards,
especially because a lot of movies, even you know, even
like the comic book movies are coming out shorter. I
remember they used to be all over three hours long,
and I guess they took the hint from people that
are like, look, I got a p at some point. Okay, guys,

(14:08):
shorten it up. And then I went in and took
a chance on a movie we were talking about last week, Friendship.
It's not what I thought. It's not what I thought
it was. And I don't think I mentioned this on
when we were recording, but I thought maybe there was
a homosexual connotation to it, and that's not there. That
being said, it wasn't a very good movie. This lady

(14:30):
that was sitting near me I went alone at the
end of this movie. It was one of those where
she said, did you like it? And I said, I
don't know. It was perhaps the weirdest movie I've ever seen.
That's the only way I can And I saw Napoleon Dynamite, which,
by the way, is one of the worst movies I've
ever seen. I don't care what anybody trying to think
about that. Yeah, I know people that just love that movie,

(14:52):
and I are you is there something wrong with you?
But anyway, Yeah, this is This is about a This
is about a husband and father whose life is just
basically Craig. His life is just just unwinding. He's you know,
he's got a career and he seems to be doing well,
but he's got no friends outside of his wife. And

(15:16):
his wife is starting to hang out with an ex
boyfriend for one reason or another, and and it's not
really alluded to whether anything is happening there, but she
she survives cancer and now she started a floral business
and he just he's got no life. And then he

(15:36):
discovers the local TV weatherman moves in down the road
and he's got to deliver a parcel because the uh,
this is something I can relate to. The mailman delivered
to the wrong house. They do that all the time
in my community. So he had to walk it over there.
And then they became friends and they hung out. But
then he kind of he kind of this is Tim

(15:58):
Robinson's character, Craig. And then all Rudd is the weatherman,
playing basically the part that he plays in the Anchorman series.
I don't was he the weatherman in those movies. I
can't remember. I don't know, but anyway, he so, you know,
he's the weatherman, and of course he's you know, charismatic,
he's got the riz as the children say, and he yeah,

(16:21):
So he basically he ends up becoming a stalker Craig
does essentially because you're yeah, because the Weatherman's kind of like, okay,
you know, he does some weird things, this Craig guy
and weatherman Paul Rud's like, Okay, I think that's it.
We can't hang out because he hung out with all
of Rudd's character's friends and all of that, and then

(16:42):
he did some stuff that was just weird. And yeah,
it's just it's a very strange, dark comedy. There are
funny moments in it, but more moments where you're going,
this is just odd. It's just a very odd film.
So there you go. That is my review of Fens.
And yet it's got an eighty nine percent certified fresh

(17:03):
Rotten Tomato score and seventy five percent with audiences. So
maybe I just don't get. I guess I didn't get,
but I'm not watching it again. I'm good. And then
I and then I rewatched. I rewatched Final Destination blood
Lines just because it's that good. Okay, So if anybody

(17:24):
has a horror film hankering and you haven't seen Final
Destination blood Lines, it's possibly the best Final Destination yet,
and you usually can't say that about the seventh film.
I think it is so nonetheless, there.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
You go and it holm together in a second viewing.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's good. It's good. It's very good,
very gory, very gruesome. But they all are. All the
Final Destination movies are definitely not a half burstine type
of horror film.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
You're in charge, I will them to you.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
All right, So what do we so? I guess Karate
Kid this weekend? What else? What do we have on
the down the pike?

Speaker 2 (18:06):
I think we got How to Train Your Dragon? Might
be not this week but the one after. I'm not sure.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
Here we go. When's Ballerina Assassin? That's not coming out
this week?

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Is it?

Speaker 1 (18:16):
I don't see it at my theaters. It must be
next week, The Ballerina Assassin? This is? This is from
the John Wick from the John Wick Story. This may
or may not be next week. I'm not sure. It
says open up Friday Horizon. Yeah, it says opening Fridays.
It might be wide. But she's she's adorable, She's unbelievably attractive,

(18:43):
and I would even let her kick my ass? Why not?
Why not? Where is her name?

Speaker 2 (18:50):
What is her? You heard here? First? Go for it?

Speaker 1 (18:53):
You know what, I don't think this is the one.
This is another movie that's trying to steal from it.
How wait a minute, this is another movie. Yeah, this
is another movie. No, not the one I'm looking at
what you know what? These scumbags? What are they doing?
Hang on, let me go, let me let me look

(19:14):
it up and see when it's coming out. You'll have
to bear with me for a second here. You Yeah,
it's just called Ballerina. So there's a movie called Murder
Ballerina Assassin Murder in motion. That is obviously you know
how they'll do that. They try to Oh, there's a
movie called Ballerina coming out the John Wick. We'll put
out a movie just like it and get people to

(19:35):
trick people into seeing it. This is coming out June
sixth Ballerina. This is from the John Wick story essentially.
And I'm talking about Anna day Armas or Anna Ana
de Armas. I don't want to play Maril Monroe or
was she? You know? I never did. I never did
end up seeing that movie. She was in No Time,

(19:55):
She was in No time to die, The Last Bond,
Last Bond movie. Was she in knives out. Okay, yeah, okay,
Well I know she was in No Time to Die too.
I would like her in somewhere else, uh, closer to home.
But you know, we could talk about that another time. Anyway.

(20:15):
It's beautiful girl. Yeah, knives out, You're right, knives out,
no time to die. Look at that blonde, that's the
one you're talking about, right, I think what's she dominate
for that? I don't think she was. I don't remember.
Would it show it? Would it show it here? Yes,

(20:36):
it would show it. Awards OSCAR nominee for Best Performance
by an Actress, Bing bing bing you go.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
I may not know what's going to win the box office,
but I know my oscars.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
Well, I think I think you're going to have a
repeat of last week at the box office. As far
as number one, I don't think Hardy Kids got what
it did.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
I don't think Kid's going to make much of a dent.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
Sure, No, I think it'll you know, people will go
see it, people like me that you know, like the series,
but it ain't gonna make uh.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
He'll probably continue to see on stitch.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
Yeah, and maybe for a couple of weeks we'll see.
Oh well, I didn't see it because I don't have
my young my young one with me, so thank goodness
for that. Uh that makes me sound like a bad father.
I love her, but not always her movies. All right,
we will chat next week.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
Sure I'll find something to talk about CATU later
