I've got Naomi Wallin from the Armory Art Center.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Good morning, Hi, glad to be here. Deb Thanks for.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Coming in TOOI so tell us what is it you
do at the Armory Art Center.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
So I work at the administrative offices. I'm the operations
manager at the Armory Arts Center. It's a wonderful place
to be. It's full of creativity and our mission to
inspire the creation experience of art. So we're surrounded by
artists all the time. We're located just south of downtown
West Palm Beach at near Howard Park in Grandview Park
and Flamingo Park neighborhood. And we have got art classes
(08:01):
and lots of exhibitions, so you know, it's just an
all arts kind of organization. And we're on a historic campus.
There's lots going on.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I always tell people to find you guys as you're
coming east on Okachobee.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
You turn right to go to the Gravis.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
You turn left as you go down to the park yep,
where the Armory Art Center is located. I think it's
so cool, and you guys have been around for quite
a while. Yes, and the building's going through multiple different
services and programs.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
Yes, definitely. So we're actually in a bit of a
renaissance right now. We're coming up on our fortieth year.
But in the last couple of years we've been undergoing
a historic renovation because our building is historic. It was
originally built in nineteen thirty nine. It became the Armory
Arts Center in nineteen eighty six, so a lot of
(08:52):
changes have happened. It was originally a National Guard and
then it operated as a Believe of Fire department at
some point, and you know, became the Art school in
nineteen eighty six when we you know, opened our doors
as the Art Center.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
That's so cool and I love how they like we
preserve these buildings. But part of using an historic building
is when you do renovations, it takes a little bit
longer because you also want to preserve the historic part
of the building exactly, but you still want air conditioning.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Yes, indeed.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Well, because some of the classes you need.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Air control certain like, you know, better ventilation to do
different things. So I know you have a craft. So
so this weekend, we're on day two of your fun
annual thing you do. It's the Art, Craft and Design
Creative Market. Yes, so tell me a little about tell
me about it. So what is the Creative Market?
Speaker 4 (09:42):
So the Creative Market, it's our eighth year of doing
this annual arts festival. We've from you know, reimagined the
name and the concept a little bit for our eighth
year to welcome more more variety of styles and media,
to kind of open it up more to more artists
and to more people who will want to come and
see everything that all of these individual artists have to offer.
(10:03):
So art Craft and Design, Creative Market. And so people
understand that, you know, they're coming here to support local
artists and vendors, independent art makers, you know. So the
event itself is going to be both indoor and outdoor
on our three building campus in historic Grandview Heights, and
it's going to welcome all together around one hundred artists
(10:24):
between our vendors who are selling their own work at
the festival, as well as almost fifty artists who are
part of our group exhibition that will be in the
gallery A Day in the Life of Palm Beach. They
all submitted their work to the theme and these are
the ones that were accepted. We also have a small
pop up shop that's going to be inside that's going
(10:45):
to have handmade gifts and things for people to purchase,
another independent artists kind of thing. Not to mention the
people that are going to be there giving demonstrations and
working in the studios, just so you can see exactly
how big our artist reaches all about.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
I think that sounds so cool, and I love coming
to these different shows because then if I need a
gift for my one friend, she likes blue, so I'll
find like a blue vase or blue bracelet or something,
you know what I mean. So you find gifts that
are good for each person. Yeah, and they always have
such a wide variety in so many different talented artists.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
I love that part of it.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
So of course when people come, what they don't always
realize this is like a free, museum quality kind of work.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
It's right up there.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Right, So this is, like you said, museum quality, it's
fine art. People have been juried before they were able
to come into the exhibition or the booth venders. All
of them have been you know, accepted through a process.
And the great thing about it is it is a
free event. It's to get the general public to come
and see what the Armory is all about and you know,
(11:50):
engage with the arts and with artists because it's a
huge part of you know, our lives. We actually used
to hold the festival during December. We decided to move
back to November this year to give people a better
opportunity to you know, pre holiday shopping and get ideas
for gifts and everything like that, because you know, it's
great to be able to give somebody something that is
unique and handmade and was you know, made by a
(12:12):
person that if you're you might even get the chance
to meet at this creative market.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
So you know, well, I always love coming and talking
to the artists, as wow, that's so much fun because
it was such cool stories like how they come up
with the idea and what they like and then how
that translates into their art.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
For sure, I like it.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
So this is your eighth yer doing it, and I
always think this is an Armory Art Festival so you
change the name a little bit. What what was the
reasoning for that.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
We wanted to make sure people understood that it was
a bit of a shopping event. The festival in prior
years has been a little bit more of a people
here festival. A lot of times they think of things
like music festivals, et cetera. We wanted to make sure
we're focusing on the art. So we wanted to make
that the headline the arts, the art, craft and design,
(13:00):
creative market to creative market, You're here to come and
you know, enjoy those types of things. And also to
bring the focus more so onto the fact that we
are in arts center, so it's it's like that kind
of group dynamic, and also to let people know of
who we are as an organization as well as it
being a place to come and you know, support independent artists.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Oh yeah, of course, like when you when I come
and buy something this weekend, it's like tomorrow, watching want
to come buy something later on today because when I
come buy company, those always mat checking this out. So
when I pop over today because today's a second day
come buy something, I'm actually supporting a local artist, which
I think that's fantastic.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Yes, We have artists who are local. We have some
that have come from out of state, depending on you know,
what they do. Some people come and they do the
festival circuit, but a lot of them have been at
the Armory before. Some of them are brand new. And
the whole premise is, you know, we want to support
local artists and artists in general.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
All right, So when I pop over later, I have
seen all kinds of art.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
It is local and fun. Some people came in from
out of town to help out and show their great work.
Is it just like paintings, Is it ceramics.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
There's lots of different kinds of things. We do have painting,
we have pottery, jewelry, sculpture, there's some people who work
with wood and metal. There's wearable art. So there's going
to be a big variety of different things for people
to browse and to enjoy. On top of that, we're
also going to have live music throughout the day. There
will be a food court as well as a bar
(14:29):
that's going to have Bloody Mary's and mimosas.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
So perfect brunch day, checking out the art, buying some
fun things, exactly, treating myself.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I like this idea.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Exactly, and throughout the day. Also on Sunday, we're going
to continue having artists demos, so there will be demonstrations
of the different types of work that we're able to
create at the Armory Art Center, as well as ongoing
demonstrations in the studios. There will be tours so you
can come and see the different buildings that we have
on campus and the artwork areas where the classes are held.
(14:59):
And on top of that, if you sign up for
a class during the weekend event in person, we will
be giving a discount of ten percent to people who register.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Oh cool, So I'm glad you mentioned the classes. So
tell the listeners and I what's the deal with the classes?
Is it like one class? Is it a class for
four weeks? How do they work?
Speaker 4 (15:16):
So the Armory has a few different kinds of classes
that we offer. Our semesters are six weeks long, and
then we have classes throughout the day, so you can
take something in the morning and the afternoon in the evening,
depending on what works for your schedule. So our longer
term classes are six weeks and you meet once a week.
They're about three hours long and that's so you can
really get in the classroom and learn what you're doing,
(15:38):
work with your teacher, work with your colleagues, and really
make something that you're proud of. We also have workshops
that we offer. Some of them are one day, three
hour workshops that are just something fun if you've never
done it before and you want to try it out,
like we do a wheel throwing workshop. There are jewelry workshops.
We do some longer term workshops and advanced techniques. Those
(16:01):
are offered throughout the year, depending on how you want
to learn, what you want to learn, and how you
want to do it.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
Oh, I think it's fantastic.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Fuck.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
We were talking before the show a friend of mine life.
We've done a couple classes at different places. I like
to make rings and do pottery, and I need a
lot of practice in these things. If I come and
do like the one day thing, I think it's a
great way for me to try it out, to see
like some interested, but like see how interested I am
as when I find out more about it? So like
I would like to go back and do more with
(16:29):
the jewelry. So like, how do I find out what
drowellry kind of classes you have? Is there a website
that lists them?
Speaker 4 (16:36):
Yeah? So All of our programs are listed online at
Armory Art dot org. And we do have all of
these different classes based on level. So if you're a beginner,
we have beginner classes and you can progress all the
way through advanced, and like I said, as you get
into the advanced classes, we do have different techniques and
things that are sometimes addressed. Also, the classes are for
(16:56):
all ages. We have classes for kids. Why just ex.
Two hundred, Like, we welcome everyone, and we're attempting to
grow the youth programs even more as we you know,
get into the following year. We have a summer camp
each year, but we do have classes for you throughout
the year, including the fall, and you know, but we
welcome everyone. Everyone can be an artist.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Oh I agree with that. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Some people look at me like I'm crazy when I
say that. I'm like, we all could do a little bit.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
It doesn't hurt to try, and they're like, you're super crafty, Like,
oh no, not super crafty at all.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
I just meet folks and they help me out, you know,
And like I draw a picture and it looks like
the little stick figure, then someone else with more skill
can come along and actually make it look like the cat.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
But I just have I have fun with my doodles
in making them, and that's the important part.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Yeah, and I recently we talked with the folks from
the Styles Nicolson Brain Institute from FAU up in Jupiter.
So doctor Brandy Blake is working with the folks from
Palm Hell Foundation. So South Florida is going to become
the Brain Coast because we like Max Planck and Scripts
(18:05):
and all these wonderful scientists working on studying the brain
and how to make it healthier and help people can
be more resilient and have, you know, lead happier lives.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
One of the big.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Things they've noticed is the benefit for the brain engaging
in neuro arts. So whether you're coming to a museum
to look at the art, you're actually learning how to
do en hands on, you're watching a movie, you're listening
to music, you're singing, you're learning to dance, you're watching
(18:36):
somebody to dance. That part of the brain that it
triggers is super enriching and helps people do better. So
we want to encourage I want to courage religious go
check all these things out. So definitely swing by the
Army Art Center day and check this wonderful eighth annual event.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
I think that's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
So obviously we can pop over today after, we can
pop every day after the show and check everything out.
So it looks like you have lots of good music today.
We have Bahi, Adam, Douglas, Thomas and Rachel some music
starting at ten am. So I know it's not a
music festiv but it's always nice to have music while.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
You're walking around a little bit of amance the ambiance.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Yes, another part of the enrichment is training our brains
to be nice and healthy. Helping our brains become nice
and healthy. And of course, and this is one I
think I really want to check out, is coming to
the courtyard to watch the live art demonstrations. So who's
going to be their when?
Speaker 4 (19:34):
So we're going to have several demos on Sunday. There
will be a collage demo, a raku demo, which is
a type of firing pottery. It's really exciting to watch.
We'll also have somebody on the pottery wheel making their
wares out of clay. We'll have someone painting plane air,
which means outdoors, either in the courtyard or somewhere on campus.
(19:56):
There's also an art wall where people can participate in
a free art activity just you know, draw on the
wall with some chalk and tell us what you think
about the festival and you know, get your get your
creativity going. There's a kid's activity also in the courtyard.
We'll have an area where parents and children can come
make ornaments. We have clay ornaments that they can decorate,
(20:17):
you can learn more about youth classes, and so those
demonstrations will be in the courtyard area. We also have
some things going on in our jewelry studio where they'll
be doing some of the more technical aspects they have.
You know, jewelry requires a certain amount of equipment, so
does the pottery studio. The pottery studio will be open
(20:39):
for you to walk through, so will the jewelry area,
so you can come in and do some q and
A with some teachers and our department directors. And then
in addition to that, we have two really great exhibitions
actually open for viewing in the gallery spaces, so all
buildings will be open the day. In the Life upon Beach,
which I mentioned earlier is uh, you know, group exhibition
(21:00):
of juried artwork along the theme of what does it
mean to have a day in the life in Palm Beach.
And the secondary exhibition is a fibers exhibition called Introspection
by local artists Molina Arango, and it's really great and
textually interesting. She has work created from dyves that she
used from a specific tree.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
It's very interesting. Oh, very cool.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
They definitely check that out while I'm there. Yeah, of
course we talked like I've been. I've done classes.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
People.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
If you listen to my lovely if you've not seen
the roku fired pottery thing, that is amazing and there's
fire people, it's really cool to see how it turns out.
It's amazing, like the glaze and stuff they managed to
get on them. That is such a cool technique. I'm
interested in checking out the enameled jewelry thing. That sounds
(21:50):
fascinating to me. So that's gonna be from one to
two this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
And like you said, there's ongoing studio demos from ten
to four all day. And of course Zone. I always
have to find kids Zone, which they think that's a
great idea and I like how they can create their
own craft. Always think that's such a neat thing because
they like doing that.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Yeah, they really love it every year.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
So speaking of making finding classes that fit people's needs. Yeah,
since this Veterans Day weekend, when to talk about this one.
You guys have a couple programs that are designed to
help veterans. So what do you have we do?
Speaker 4 (22:24):
We have a program that's called the Brave Hearts. We
work with the VA Medical Center of West Palm Beach.
They're sort of our collaborator, and through this we offer
programs where they're able to come to take group classes
and eventually some of them are able to you know,
take classes independently. The group classes involve an element of
art therapy and that's again facilitated through the VA, but
(22:46):
they're able to come in and experience being in an
art studio and be in that kind of classroom setting
where they're encouraged to you know, and investigate their creative
skills and to kind of put something out into the world,
which is what art is all about. Is getting your
internal external in some ways. It's like you know what
(23:07):
you're thinking and how you feel, and then there's the
therapy component that goes with it. Because with the Brave
Arts program being you know, veterans based you know, they're
very knowledgeable about all of that.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Oh absolutely, as they have counselors there that can work
with them. And it's a good way for folks to process, yes,
what they've experienced, what they're still experiencing. And I don't
want to overuse the phrase, but the safe space so
they can come there and do it and with other
folks who've been where they've been, yes, and that makes
a difference as well, because they really do get it. Yeah,
(23:40):
So because they've walked part of that path the same
as you have, which I think is cool.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
And art is a very cool way.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
For people to express things because I know therapists have
been using that for years, even with like little kids,
like drawing with crayons and coloring and things like that.
That's maybe one sister went and that they didn't had
a color and it was so helpful for her. It
was really amazing. I think now would be cool if
she could like actually paint something. That would just be like,
like really super helpful.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
And that's our mission at the Armory Art Center is
to draw people in to come and express themselves through creativity.
There are a lot of people who think that they
outgrow their creativity or their artistic ability. A lot of
times artwork. Making artwork is kind of like a muscle.
You have to exercise it, you have to practice, and
(24:29):
sometimes people think that that's a by gone time for them.
We have plenty of people who come in, you know,
as they get older and they're like, oh, well, I
haven't thought about making art since I was a kid.
And it's like, well, that's great. That's why we're here,
you know, being a community art center for people to
foster that part of their expression. And if you are
not someone who wants to be in a studio, that
(24:52):
doesn't mean that you're not somebody who would enjoy the
gallery exhibitions and appreciating. We need the art appreciators as
much as we need art makers. So that's like kind
of the pivotal point of being a community art center
and being where we are in West Palm Beach as
we're trying to, you know, extend that to everyone and
(25:13):
say we're a place that welcomes artists of all kinds
and all levels and come here with us and learn
and enjoy what it means to be around art. Oh.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
I think it's fantastical, and like we talked a little
bit before the show. If somebody has a group event
that they want to work with you guys to do
it at the center, they can do that, right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
So we do have different rates and things like that.
It's a proposal, so you would have to put on
your inquiry and we would have to you know, map
that out based on our availability. But we do have
people who can work that through with you. So if
you're interested, the information is at on the website at
armor or dot work.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
Yeah, because I have friends they have like massive family reunions,
but it's like up in the hills in like West Virginia,
and somebody last year brought like they kept cardboard tubes
like from the from paper towels. I can't remember what
they made with them, but it was so goofy and funny.
But everybody did it. Great grandma did it. The little
wei one that was two years old did it. Of course,
(26:09):
with varying degrees of it was all fun though. It
came out so fun. But such a fun family activity
or a group activity like girls night out, you know,
or like you know, something like that where you want
to spend bonding or like if you want to spend
time with your kids. Like we talked people that show
my friend and her mom will come and do classes
so they can spend time together.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
A lot of people do that. They'll come with either
their friends or family. There's significant other The pop up
workshops are very popular for that because they're a short commitment.
You know, you only have to come for one three
hour bracket of time, and a lot of them come
back because it's just so much fun. We've had people
come in and they bring like five friends with them
and it's always just a great time.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
Oh I love it.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
So what's the website phone number for people to get information?
Speaker 4 (26:55):
So the website is Armoryart dot org and the phone
number is five six one eight three two one seven
seven six. We're always welcome to help you out with
our registrar at the front desk if you have any questions.
All of the class descriptions are listed on the website.
We have extended our hours since this fall so that
we are open a little bit later in the evenings
(27:16):
during the week, especially for those who want to come
visit the gallery. We are also open on Saturdays. So
all of that information is on the website, either on
the class pages or on our calendar, and in fact,
we also have other events throughout the year, not just
the exhibitions in the gallery spaces, but those exhibitions all
(27:36):
often have receptions. So we'll hold a reception one special
night to you know, celebrate the artists that are on display,
and that's open to the public and you can come
mix and mingle with us and be in the community
space with the artists and the people who are there
to support them. And also we have another fundraiser next
year in February, February sixth five, Artistry and Motion. We
(28:01):
are going to be giving two tickets away during the
Creative Market for Artistry and Motion, and each ticket is
a three hundred and fifty dollars value. It's going to
be an evening of music. There's also going to be
a curated exhibition, there will be dancing. The events open
to the public, and proceeds will help support the Armory's
future programs and initiatives and you know, just help us
(28:23):
keep doing all of the art that we love to do.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
Oh, I think that's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
And if people want to make a donation or maybe
become a volunteer, can they reach out to you? Do
they go to the website for that.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
Or you can make donations online at armoryart dot org.
If you have other questions about how you can get involved,
you can contact us at the phone number, or you
can visit our website and contact us through our email
contact form. We also encourage everyone to sign up for
our newsletter. We send it out once a month and
we will list our events and other happenings that are
(28:55):
going on. It's a great way to get involved and
find out, you know, when we're releasing classes, you know,
and what other kinds of things we might be putting
a call out to the community for.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
Oh, I think that's fantastic. Love that idea. And of
course they can also follow you on social media.
Speaker 4 (29:10):
