i want to welcome my guests. Today i've Got Jill,
BROWN ceo from The Armory Arts. Center good, morning.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Good, Morning thank you so much for having us deb.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Thanks for coming in this. Child so, obviously lots of
cole things happening around, town and a lot of them
are actually happening at your. Place so tell the listeners
AND i what is The Armory Art center because we've
had so many people move into town.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Recently, Sure i'm happy to tell you. So The Army
Arts center is a three building campus over in The
Grandview heights. Neighborhood it's the main building is designated historic
and we've been going through a. Renovation so our main
building holds our ministrative, offices our galleries are newly opened,
again glass And fiber, studio and our jewelry studios and

(08:42):
our digital. Studio the back building which used to be
the motor motor pool for the, armory well the services
if you want to say, that that holds our, pottery,
sculpture stone, carving, metal metal cast and. Welding and then

(09:02):
our third building is a two story building that holds our,
printmaking thoughs our, drawing painting. CLASSES a lot of our
youth programming happens.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
There so we are a.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
Community art school that is open to anybody of any
skill level or interest who would like to come over
and you, know try, something or you, know work on
their skills or redevelop new ones or just have some.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Fun, WELL i think that's.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Fantastic AND i KNOW i had. Friends one of my
friends with her father, passed her and her mom would
take classes to spend time, together, yes just to like,
process and they said it was the most lovely.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Experience, well it's really fun because we're next year will
be our fortieth.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Year so we're excited about launching our fortieth. Year and
Since i've been, There i've been there a little over
a year and a half as A, ceo And i've
had the opportunity to hear so many great, stories just
like you were saying, that you, know mother daughter sharing time.
Together we've had generational stories where somebody was, LIKE i
used to dance there and it was actually an, armory you,
know they had a dance. Hall and then my kids

(10:04):
went to summer camp, there and now their, kids our
grandkids are. Going so it's really been around. Forever sometimes
it's been considered the best kept, secret but that's not
what we.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Want we want everyone to be able to come out
and enjoyed the. Armory there's a lot of fun and.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
Speaking of our, classes we have a lot of opportunity
for flexibility in people's schedule because there's a big workforce
down here that can't come out during the, day and
there's people that can only come on the weekends during the.
Evening so we have something for everybody at all different
time frames and amount of. Weeks say so there's six week,
classes one day, workshops, camps there's a variety of things

(10:40):
in all different.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Media, WELL i think that's fantastic BECAUSE i know you
guys are a great community resource and, people like you,
said don't really know about trying to fix. That, yes
so people going to enjoy, it but you're very responsive
to the community. Needs SO i know a lot of
times in the, past the classes were really long, sessions
AND i was, like, OH i can't do a thirteen week,

(11:01):
class might be able to do like a five or
six week, class or a one day class is usually
ideal for me BECAUSE i can clear one day off my.
Schedule SO i, like how you've updated your class offerings
to accommodate.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
That, yeah we really.

Speaker 4 (11:15):
Did so we were listening to the public and hearing
what they had to, say and people would, Say i'd
love to come, here but just like what you, SAID
i can't come for an eight week or six.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Weeks we started to.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Look at the length of time people wanted to come
there or what their needs, were and we're addressing that
we want people to come, there we want them to
be welcome. There and, AGAIN i think a big thing to.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Stress about our classes is it's for all skill.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
Levels we have everything from beginners that are true beginners
who maybe wanted to take a painting class have literally
never touched a paintbrush and that's, great or somebody who's
done it but hasn't done it for, years or somebody
who's very. Advanced sometimes we have master visiting an artists
workshop series so they can learn you, know higher skill.
Levels but the campus is pretty incredible and if anyone's
ever interested in wanting to come and.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
See what we, have we're happy to show them around
if they want to come.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Over oh, yeah, well AND i know coming up you
also obviously you people come and they create. Art there's actual,
artists they are doing. It and then you actually have
like you just had a summer studio, sale so coming
up In. September so obviously you have, classes but then
you also have. Exhibitions so what exhibitions do you have
going now or that are coming.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
Up, yes we have a whole schedule for the, season
but the first one's. Launching we'll be opening On september,
second Between form And feeling will be In montgomery And Greenfield,
galleries and That's Heather, Couch Renee, ray And Terry Rooke.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
RAGOVIC i always see her name. INCORRECT i.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
Apologize and then in The East gallery we have Color,
forms which Is Susan.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Curry they're going to.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Be, great so they Share the reception, date WHICH i
believe Is september, eighteenth is the reception and it's free
to the public from five to seven. Thirty but then
throughout that Schedule they're going to offer several different other
opportunities for people to come. Out, so for exat, Ample
Susan curry along with The Palm Beach Meditation center is
going to offer a meditation session to help you be

(13:08):
creative and learn your creative. Way we're also how Their
couch is going to do a demo on her pottery
and how she makes. That we're also going to have
a panel discussion with all the, artists so you'll be
able to ask them anything how they make, something how
they conceived an, idea or even you, know what's their
favorite thing to. Eat, so you, know it's just fun
to be able to get up in close personal with the.
Artists so it's an exciting session coming up for.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
That, OH i think that's exciting AND i love how
you have the meditation one to help bring on that
creativity BECAUSE i have friends that are, writers but they
do that predominantly on the weekend and sometimes it takes
them a long time to transition from their, work, work, work,
work from the week of their work week back into
that creative.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
Space it absolutely. Does it's a great.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Way the arts are a great way to have fun
or to, learn you, know for your, health mental, health
and to. Relax so there's more to it than just you,
know the art making process has far more, benefits which is, Interesting,
dad because we have been working over this last year
with The Neural Arts collaborative And Palm Beach. Health we
just had some lectures and workshops with them and our

(14:15):
last exhibition and they are going to BE i think
it's coming In. OCTOBER i think It's october. Eighth they're
going to have an event out. There more details are
coming on, that but it's going to be wonderful and
for the public to be able to come and talk
about how the health the arts help with neural health
through dementia and in other.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Ways well and interesting IS i just. Spoke we just
talked to the folks from The Healthier Glades initiative last
week and they're doing like chaer yoga and different things
to help as a preventative for, dementia keep people, integrate
integrated in, society socially, interactive all those good things to
help with their you, know their personal well. Being and you,
know THEN i talked with Doctor Randy blake from The

(14:54):
Styles Nicholson Brain, university so we're we are now we
are part of The Brain coast For South.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
Florida, absolutely and that all kind of came to us
just because we've also we've been doing some initiatives that
way anyhow through Our Brave hearts program where we work
with Our veterans, program and so they have opportunity to
have art therapy in group sessions, along so they have
a therapist and art or they can take independent.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Classes so this kind of all just plays.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
Together and it just really really helps people gain the
confidence that they need to be part of our.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
Community.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Oh, Absolutely AND i think these kind of programs are so.
Important and like you, said even never picked up a
paintbrush or a pencil to, Draw come take a. Class
it's just, fun.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
Right AND i should, say and it's not just painting
and drawing, Either LIKE i, said we have, welding we have,
sculpture we have, printmaking we have digital, classes we have
fiber classes are going to be. Glass so there's just
really something for.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Everybody AND i want to, say maybe a couple of
years AGO i SAW i think it was a fiber
class where you could come and. Learn how did. YOU
i think it's called Batique AND i was, like, oh
that looks. Fascinating, CHRIS i was, working but, like what
a cool class and what a neat thing for somebody
to offer to. TEACH i think that's.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Fascinating, well In, november there's going to be an exhibition
Called Passy's eyes by Artists CANDY. G, lopez and she
is a fiber, Artist so to be able to be
inspired by. That if you're a fiber they're. Incredible she
makes bigger than life.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Portraits, well WHEN i went to, college you, know for,
me it was such an eye opening so many different,
careers so many people doing different. Things one of the
PEOPLE i met from The International Student, house she was,
like becoming like a fiber artist if you. Will and
like when you go and you buy a shirt that's
got patterns on, it whether that herring bone or check

(16:46):
or like flowers, whatever she created, that not all of,
them but she that's what she would. Do AND i was,
LIKE i didn't even know that was a.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
Job that's.

Speaker 4 (16:54):
Fascinating it is fascinating because the arts they touched so
many things that people just don't even.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
Realize that are part of the deal. Lives you look
at a, billboard somebody create the.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
Design you go to a, movie you go see the
band on A friday, night you, know your favorite local watering,
hole like all those. Places that's all arts and it's around,
us it's with, Us so it's important to continue to
support it and enjoy.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
It support, it enjoy. It speaking of, SUPPORT i know
you guys always need. Volunteers how do people sign up
to be a volunteer or to be a? Sponsor, yeah
so we.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Do sponsorships usually happen in conjunction with different events we're.
Doing so for, example in the, Fall november eighth and,
ninth we have Our Creative, market which is an outside.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Arts fair sort of, speak but we have we give.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Tours there's an our exhibition that goes along with that
Called Full circle that people can apply.

Speaker 3 (17:43):
For it's a juried.

Speaker 4 (17:44):
Exhibition so the market has about one hundred. Artists outside,
selling we have, performers food, vendors youth. Areas it's really
and it's free for the public to come to and
really kind of kick off their holiday shopping season with you,
know homemade. Wares but sometimes we'll put a call out
for an event like that and say, hey we, need you,
know some volunteers to help us get that. Going so
that's the best way how to do it is to

(18:05):
look for our, calls follow us on all our social media,
channels or check out our website at armoryart dot org
for information about. That right, now we have calls out
for the market artists on the Deadline september. Nineteenth we
have calls out for the performing arts which Is september,
twelfth the food and Vendor september, twelfth and then the
deadline for The Full Circle jury exhibition as part of

(18:27):
that is the Deadline september twenty. Six it's all available
on our website very easily to find all one. Place
but if you do go to the, website you'll see
other things that are coming down the line later in the.
Season i'm not going to give all the details out
on that because we want you to come and.

Speaker 3 (18:41):
Look it's.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Exciting oh, yeah so It's armory art dot. Org, Correct,
Yes Army arts with an Ss Armory arts dot.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
Org, yeah thank.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
YOU i will update my little list Here Army arts dot.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
Org it's good to now.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
SEE i would have gone to the wrong.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
PLACE i like it.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
Anyway so in of, course they can follow you On,
facebook book And, Instagram, yes Which instagram is so beautiful
because it's all it's so video picture, related which of
course just dovetails nicely with the.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
Arts it absolutely.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
Does so tell me a little bit about your creative.
Market obviously you said mentions coming Up november, eighth and
obviously have the call out for all the different people
who can. Participate you also have like an entertainment, lineup,
Right so there's going to be, music interactive crafts and
things folks can do.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
That, yeah there'll be family areas their kids here they
can go make some, artwork you, know to take home
with them that, day free of. Charge will be performers
scheduled throughout the. Day people can take tours of all
of our. Facilities you'll be able to see live demos
from artists like you could go See rakou firing and
the Pottery. Stoo there'll be people all painting you can.
Take LIKE i, said the, tours you can see really

(19:50):
everything that we have. There you can go in and
look at the exhibitions will all be. Up there's also
going to be our pop up shop that's The Armory
artists another people who have consigned artwork that would be for.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
Sale so there's just going to be a lot to
do there that.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
Day and again it's free and open to the public
and it runs from about nine to five every.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
Day cool and so and you sent you the jury
and art exhibition is actually the theme this year is full.
Circle Full.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
Circle we just feel like we're coming to full circle this.
Year there's been so many things happen as we go
through our historic. Restoration we're preparing to close out our
phase one of our main. Building we couldn't be more
excited about. That we're hoping to be able to do
a phase two to complete it. That our team is
working you, know tire tirelessly to you, know update and

(20:38):
change and make our environments even more user friendly for.
Everybody so we're cleaning things out and. Update so it's
just an ongoing process just to make The armory the
best place for you to come and make our In South.
Florida so we're really excited about.

Speaker 1 (20:52):
It, oh very.

Speaker 2 (20:53):
Cool and of course when you say the artists or
you have a call out to artists for them to
apply to be part of the, show, yes.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
This is application submission process for.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
That so like painting artists or like what kind of
art back, basketry so.

Speaker 4 (21:07):
For the art market it's it's, arts craft and design
and craft meaning fine, craft like it could be basket.
Career we let someone who's who makes leather. Purses it
could be somebody who's a furniture. Designer there could be,
painters there can be pottery. Folks so there's a variety
of fiber. Artists there's a variety for. That the juried art,
show which will be inside the galleries for the most,

(21:27):
part they can submit whatever media they're they're interested in
submitting that that goes along with the, theme and then
it gets juried to see who gets selected to go into.

Speaker 3 (21:36):
That but it's going to be. Exciting we're looking forward to.
It it's.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Exciting it is a great opportunity for artists of various
mediums to engage with the.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
Public, yes there, is and then there's beyond.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
That there's even other calls on the website for other
things that we're. Doing for, example In, february we're having
our annual fundraiser in this. Year it's called you Know Art,
throwdown and so we're going to be putting a call
out soon for you know. Artists we're going to do
a head to head ninety minute competition with THE dj
and music and food and. Drinks it's just gonna be

(22:08):
a really fun. NIGHT i don't want to give you
the full, details but we have a few more things
that we're we're not releasing quite, yet but we're ready.
To so our whole exhibitions on exhibitions are online or
events will be, online so it's best to follow us
wherever you.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Can Cool and of, course one of the big THINGS i,
said my friends really enjoyed coming to the. Classes so
when is your next set of classes. Starting, yes we've.

Speaker 4 (22:30):
Classes going on right, now and there's some workshops and
things still, available but our fall session is completely out
and ready for registration For It's september Through, december so
all the classes and there still could be something that
would be added, later but they, START i, think If i'm,
correct right After Labor day that they'll, start and you,
know folks can sign up now and come on.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
Over i'm. Sure, yeah get that one thing on your
calendar that you look forward to.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
Doing. Hey not only, that but they're also great.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
Gifts oh, hey, yeah my birthday's. Coming, hey there you.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
Go and THEN i should tell you.

Speaker 4 (23:02):

so we looked at our youth, programming and so we
redesigned and revamped a very comprehensive after school arts program
for our youth into, teens as well as A saturday morning,
program and then our summer camps will be out In.
December and then we also just launched a birthday party
package so people can bring their children over there and

(23:23):
have a, great all inclusive art making birthday.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Party so it's.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
Fun there's lots of things going on at The, armory
lots of great growth and. Change so we're excited about
our our. Renaissance if you, will it's the best way to.

Speaker 2 (23:34):
Say and renaissance is perfect for.

Speaker 1 (23:36):
Art of.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
Course, YES i like, that AND i like that you,
guys LIKE i, said are so responsive and finding needs
that need to be met in the community and doing.
That so what are some of the classes are coming?
UP i want to. SAY i was looking and one
of them was like metalworking maybe something like.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
That, yes we have some metalworking classes coming. UP a
couple different teachers teach. That i've asked them a million
times telling me to. Go they, LIKE i, Swear, jill
if you sign, up you will walk out of. There
accomplished and have something in, hand AND i was, LIKE
i don't, Know, god you, know there's a little nerve
wracking to think of those power. Tools But i've been
down there and seeing what the students who've never done

(24:13):
in their life are, doing and the smiles on their
faces when they lift those masks and the lights going
like they're. Thrilled they walk away with some really beautiful
projects and they want to keep going with. It some
of the students have even liked it so much that
they went on to trade school to learn as a
trade is a new. Career and then we've had some
people from the trade school come over because they want
to take those skills and do something artistic with them

(24:34):
on you, know another.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
Side so it's really.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
Fun another thing that we're really making sure that we're
doing is if we have a beginning class or an
intermediate class or an advanced, class that those classes are
going to be taught to that, level because we don't
want anyone to be scared, of you, know being next
to somebody who's in advanced or this is that we
want you to come in and be comfortable and know
that we're here to teach you and we're here to

(24:57):
encourage you to continue to grow so you can keep
going up in those. Levels so that was a big
initiative for us to make sure that we do that
across the boards so that you.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
Can take a crosses where you like like a basic
jurey making like learning how to make a ring kind of.
Thing AND i have to say the instructor was really
good about like we were like, newbies, newbie newbe, newbies
and is, like this is what we're going to, do
step by. Step if you got, nervous they came right,
over spent five, minutes twenty minutes whatever you needed with
you to get you through that. Process.

Speaker 4 (25:27):
Yeah so we do a lot of group you, know
instruction as well as the one on one to help
everybody when they when they need.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
That so that's good. Too. Yes so like if me
and my girlfriends want to come out and having like
a nice girls night, event can we coordinate that we
do like have like a one day of.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
Share, yeah we do, that so we can do we
can put together some packages like that for. People that's
not a.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
Problem but we also have workshops and things available for
you to sign up to do. That like we just
did a partnership with The Norton so they had Their
jewey exhibition what you mentioned earlier in the, show and
we work with them and we offered one day toy
workshops that coordinated with that, exhibition so people came.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Over we could still do things like.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
That and in the holiday time we're going to do
our year two of our Handmade, holidays so that'll be
a week or so long of all different types of
workshops for different ages and groups to come, Out like
there may.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
Be a jewelry.

Speaker 4 (26:16):
Class it's like you walk away with two pairs of,
earrings one for, me one for, you so you can
give it away to, somebody so you, KNOW i have
a lot of fun those nights.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
TOO i love that idea Because i'm a big fan
of ear, rings so number. One and it was so
funny when they was. Shopping i'm like a huge fan of.
Shopping but when they buy, Yis i'm, like let me
buy one for. Them they're, like, oh And i'm going
to need one.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
TOO i go broke every year doing that BECAUSE i
always buy things THAT i THINK i will, like SO
i know they will like it.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
Exactly, yes what a fun. CONCEPT i love it, Again
like you, said there's metal working classes like traditional like. Painting, oh,
yes we have.

Speaker 4 (26:51):
Painting we have, acrylic, oil, watercolor all the different levels of.
That we have, printmaking we have all different types of photography,
classes drawing. CLASSES i, mean it's pretty much you name,
it we have, it or we're getting ready to launch.
It so we you, know it's the media is.

Speaker 3 (27:06):
Not it's.

Speaker 4 (27:07):
Funny let let me backtrack me because quite often people
will call and, say what what are classes do you?
Have you, know the painting draw and they think that
that's all there, is and we start telling them they're,
like holy, moly they can't even.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Believe that we have so.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
Much so we have skilled professionals and teaching ours there
that are pretty incredible that to be able to teach
the programs that we, Have so we're excited and people
will love.

Speaker 2 (27:30):
Them speaking of skilled artists and, teachers SAY i learn
a new craft AND i want to become a teacher with.
You how DO i go about that? Process?

Speaker 4 (27:38):
Yeah, so if you're somebody has some experience and has
an idea or things that they can teach something within
some of the programs we, have you, know feel free
to go to our Website armoryarts Dot org and then
you can look up the employment section and you'll see
that there's an application and process to apply for. Teaching
we're always looking for new creatives to do new things
like we're also getting ready to launched yoga in our

(28:00):
galleries in the, fall so you, know things like that
are gonna be. Fun so we're looking for a variety
of different type of.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
People so the art of, MOVEMENT i like. That the
art of, movement that's also very. IMPORTANT i like. It
it is so between the meditation where you're still and
creative and the yoga lots of really cool. IDEAS i love.

Speaker 4 (28:16):
It, WELL i mean yoga, Too AND i don't know
if you realize. This for, example like if you're if
you're throwing on the, wheel that's very labor intensive and
you AND i always tell people take a handbailding. Class
if you've never Taken potter, before you take a wheel,
class BECAUSE i want you to be. Successful, understand you
have to have a good, core good strength to be
able to do, that and yoga will help you stretch that.
Out because we don't want anyone to have any kind

(28:38):
of back, issues whether they're making hard everyone ever want
to be, well it's fine and.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
Relaxed, yeah that's a great. IDEA i hadn't thought of.
THAT i did try the pottery. Thing MAYBE i need
to eat yoga for it. Beforehand i'm not. Sure i'm
it was Not it was, fun but really did look
like a copper bowl WHEN i Would but it was.
Fun i'll put that out.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
There that's.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Okay and the instructor was. Wonderful he was, like come back,
again you did. Great it's.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
Practice there really is a lot of practice involved in
classes like. THAT i mean it takes. TIME i mean
YOU i can sit down and was always.

Speaker 4 (29:11):
MESMERIZE i see some of my friends or potters and
they can take twenty five pound bag of clay and
throw it into a gigantic cylinder and you, know a
few minutes And i'm sitting here trying to just do
a pinch pot you know WHAT i.

Speaker 3 (29:23):
Mean so they didn't get that way. Overnight so that's
why we have many classes for you to continue to,
learn from, beginning intermediate to, advance.

Speaker 2 (29:30):
So you can keep protecting off for all of those
which is. Great, yes, yes so obviously so many fun.
