Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning, welcome to Palm Beach Treasure Coast Perspective. I'm
your host, dev New Thank you for joining me this
week on lots of great things going on and to
help me tell you all about them, I have Elizabeth
Deshield in this studio with me. Good morning, good morning.
So so many cool things going on, and our friend
Benji over at Environmental Resource Management Centers offs a big
list of great things happening in the natural areas in

(00:27):
Palm Beach County. So coming up on Friday, October seventeenth,
it is the Florida Native Plant Bingo Walk and that's
happening in Frenchman's Forest Natural Area and that's from nine
am till ten thirty says a bit earlier beforecus too
hot and then this was cool. You might like this one,
e Lizabeth. It is a peaceful evening kayak Saturday, October eighteenth,

(00:50):
from five to seven pm. And that's gonna be over
at Winding Waters Natural Area OO. And there's lots more.
Just go to PBCERM dot com and they're all listed
there for you. And they also have, Like what age
appropriateness is good for, you know, free, like if it's
good for the five year old, nine year olds, fifteen
year olds, old's depending on, like how far you have

(01:10):
to walk, so how are you willing to carry them?
So anyway, so what's happening on your end? So much?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
It's October my favorite time of year because it's spooky
season and there is something happening all around Palm Beach
County no matter where you live, in honor of it,
including Mounts Botanical Garden and this is so much fun.
On October twelfth, they have dogs stay in the garden

(01:40):
with your dog in costume so you can go out.
It's always a photographer's delight to go there, just to
capture this gem that we have here. But you'll get
to see some fun furry fiends all decked out ready
to go. And of course it isn't Halloween without some

(02:00):
live spooks going on.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
And our own lake Worth Playhouse is currently showing.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Little Shop of Horrors through October nineteenth, and that's of
course downtown Lakeworth. And then let's do the time warp again.
The Cravis Center has the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It
is the fiftieth anniversary and you are seeing it already
everywhere Netflix. There are documentaries about the making of going on.

(02:30):
But at the Cravis Center you can actually see original
members of the cast from Rocky Horror, including Barry Bostwick.
They have a costume contest all of that.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Oh I remember watching that at college. We would go
like every Saturday night. They would do it, huge fun
community event, totally free for the community and the students
to go. And I just remember my my roommate saying,
bring your umbrella. Yes, yes, And once I brought the umbrella,
I realized why I needed the umbrella. It was hilarious.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Well, you get your own props with the purchase of
your tickets. They don't allow you to bring in your own, which,
remembering my own every Friday night at the old Carefree Theater,
that's probably a good thing. We got very creative with
some of the things that we would throw at the
appointed time. But we have also the Palm Beach County

(03:20):
Historical Society is doing Haunted walks through the county's oldest
cemetery right downtown across from the Norton. You know, we
have some fun art after dark going on, so we're
used to going to that area every Friday night. But

(03:41):
you can go to the Palm Beach County Historical Society
website and get the schedule of when they're going to
be doing those walks. You do f to RSVP and
of course get a ticket for it, but really cool
you can hear some actual stories about pom Beach County's
earliest pioneers that may still be with us.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
To turn. I love it. You should be doing the
tour so and of course I think I'm more in
the on the send one. This is the hoot and
House happening in the dagger Wing Nature Center for the
wee kids. I'll be there and they come and cost
you and do course all kinds of fun Halloween games.
And then they make sure you bring your bug spray
and your flashlights because you take a little walk outside

(04:24):
the nature center and you get to see all the
nocturnal animals that come out at night. Because this starts
at six pm on Friday, October twenty fourth, free admission,
no reservation. Need to just show up with the kiddos
and have a wonderful time, and it could be the
big kiddos. It's okay, yeah, they love everybody coming.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
It's all fantastic. And for more of the live theatrical entertainment.
Oh wait, one more Halloween here at the brew House Gallery.
So if you like your favorite punch with a side
of some locally brewed beer. Brew House Gallery has a
paint night with spooky wine or pint glasses, so they

(05:05):
will have an instructor there and you can make all
of your fun themed beverage holders for the big October
thirty first night with friends or family or by yourself,
you don't judge on October eighth from six forty five
to nine pm. That's at the brew House Gallery in

(05:25):
downtown Lake Park, right on Lake.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
That's a lot of fun. I've done another one where
it was like the Valentine's one where you did the
hearts and stuff on the glasses. It's really cool and
you don't have to be good. They did the instructor
shows you have to do all of it. It's just
a fun night out with friends or making new friends.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yes, And for more theatrical entertainment, Arts Garage is having
the Cafe on Maine on October eleventh, which was written
by the former mayor of Delray Beach and inspired by
the classic Henry Mancini song Moon River, and it's a
play a love taking place in Long Island, a cafe,

(06:04):
lots of fun, original production, and that is October eleventh
at two pm and eight pm downtown del Rey at
Arts Garage.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
And of course you can go to Arts Garage and
get the lineup of all the other events coming. They
have all the great music tributes and I love how
they have like the poetry slam nights and open mic
nights for comedy, so lots of cool things like that.
And of course if you go to the Treasure Coast,
they've got lots of cool things happening. They're very much
into the outdoors right now, but they're doing Oxpo EcoCenter

(06:34):
is launching a new family friendly adventure series called Wild Together.
So the first one is starting on Saturday, October eighteenth,
and it's an experiential family learning series focused in nature,
adventure and survival skills. So on Saturday, October eighteenth, starting
from nine going till noon, is freshwater fishing at George LaStrange,

(06:57):
and you learn how to make the perfect cast as
they try their hand at fresh water fishing like the
people did back in the day. Safe technique, different types
of fishing poles, what kinds of lures to use. So
you know, I remember going with my grandpa when we
were little and we used dough balls in the hook.
Never caught any fish, but we had the fattest fish
in the river, catfish. Yes, and my grandmother would just

(07:21):
laugh and she was like feeding the fish again, are
we and we're like yes.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
It's all about the quality of time spent.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
It really is. I remembered so many years later and
how much fun that was.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
It's very meditative, right, just being out there being quiet,
being off our phones. We all could use a lot
more time doing that.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
And oh, would speak you One more Halloween thing In
Saint Lucie County, the libraries are doing a cool thing
this year. So if your little kiddo says three, four
or five years old and they've outgrown their Halloween costume,
you can donate that gently used costume to the library
and then they trade in the match. And if you
just don't need one, because you've already about like five

(08:03):
different costumes for a bunch of different events, you can
just donate the ones you no longer need so you
can have a fun Halloween costume for this year. Which
library that's actually gonna be handled by the Kilmer Branch
Library in Saint Lucie County.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Wonderful.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
I know, they're just so clever. I always come up
with things. And of course when you go to the
library there, they also have like memory maker studios if
you have a lot of like old photographs and vhs
and things like that that you want to convert to
a digital format, and they have all the gear there,
the equipment to convert. It is totally free to use
and they will show you how to use it. You
can book a studio time somebody will help you, and

(08:40):
then you can keep redoing it till you've saved all
your memories into the digital format. And they also have
podcasting studios, so you want to try your hand to
podcasting like this show, give them a call. They will
help you set that up as well.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
That is phenomenal. And all this, of course is a
free resource. Thank you to our library for that.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
And the other thing they have which is really cool,
it's the Things Library. So then one of the library
has a library of things, So if you need to
go borrow a bandsaw or a drill to drill something
in the world. You can go borrow that equipment or
if you need to borrow sewing machine or a golf club.
So if your kids want to try golf, you go

(09:22):
to this library and go online and see what's available,
and you can borrow the clubs for like two weeks
or three weeks however they set it up. Your kids
can try it, they like it, then you can buy
your own golf clubs. This way, you're not committed to
buying the trumpet that lasts for three weeks and then
you know. So I think that's such a clever idea
as well. Go to Saint lucyco dot gov forward slash libraries.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Well for things that are edible, because of course all
of us enjoy food and something completely different. The Palm
Beach County Chapter of the Rare Fruit Council International having
their annual Tropical Fruit Tree and Edible Plant Sale, and
you will have experts on hand to tell you exactly

(10:09):
which plant is going to grow the best in your yard,
in your garden in a pot on your patio, which
I have attempted to do with very much success, but
I have not given up. One day I will have
my own leeche tree and it will be a bloomin
but you also can discover fruits that you might not

(10:31):
ever have even heard about. And this is going to
take place October eighteenth at the South Florida Fairgrounds, and
visitors are encouraged to bring a plant wagon because you
might just go there to look around and you're going
to fall in love and you're going to want to
try your hand at this. This is going to happen.
It happens every time. Bring your own wagon.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Saw that. And I'm always fascinated by all the different
tropical plants and fruits and stuff, so many amazing things.
And like you, Alas, I do not have the green thumb,
but also forever hopeful something will grow. Speaking of growing,
Indian River Lagoon Science Festival is growing. This is their
tenth annual Steam Discovery Event. It's coming up on Saturday,

(11:18):
October twenty fifth, from ten am till three pm at
Veterans Memorial Park, Fort Pierce. Free admission. So many different
fun vendors there. I still can't wait to go try out.
It's a food vendor. But what is is like a
big hamster wheel and you walk in the wheel and
as you walk in the wheel, it shaves the ice
for your slushy, and then you get to make your slushy.

(11:40):
When you're done, say, can you tell them a big kid,
I just gotta go do this.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
No, that sounds incredible and it helps you kind of
burn some calories that you then replenish very quickly.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Oh yeh. But I think it's such a great way
for kids to see the whole science of it, like
the energy motion creates the thing and it's such a
cool thing. From more information on that, you can go
to Irlsciencefest dot org.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
And we have our own sort of lagoon in Palm
Beach County where they are celebrating. It's lagoon Fest, the
twenty twenty five lagoon Fest. You are going to see
tons of other nonprofit organizations, cultural organizations, so many things

(12:23):
to see to do, and it all raises awareness and
celebrates our own lagoon which has been of course a
source of trade and community coming together for thousands of
years here and it is all celebrated November first downtown
West Palm Beach Waterfront.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
So we always wont remember the saying nothing down the
drain except for water.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Absolutely, And it's really great to bring your younger ones
or yourselves and learn a lot more. You can find
out more at WPB dot org to find out what's
going on in downtown West Palm or you can go
to Palm Beach County Cultural Council website for an entire

(13:10):
list and lineup of things happening through the end of
the year.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Very cool. Speaking of fun things happening, when welcome. Our
guest for Dame is Colleen. Good morning, Good morning. Hey,
I'm glad you could come back in so tell the
listeners and I everything there is to know about ballet Pumpeach.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Oh my, well that could take till next Sunday, so
I think we will. I'll be brief. The biggest thing
coming up is snow White. Our performances of Snow White
at the Cravit Center. It's a great family friendly, a
little bit spooky, but mostly fun.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
You know, there's snow.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
White, there's a really evil queen and these lovely seven
dwarves and it's just a lot of fun. So we
hope people come out for that.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
I have questions about the snow White. Yeah, so obviously
seven dwarfs, Yes, ma'am. They are ballet performers, right, yes
they are. Do they like wear costumes or they just
like guess it like theater of your mind. I mean,
how does that work with a ballet like that that's
really geared for kids.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
Well, they are ballet dancers, and they are well costumed
to look like something that they are not, which is
very well trained classical dancers. There's a little tap in it,
not tap with sounds, but that kind of esthetic is
in it. They're hysterical, they do some dancing on their
knees and it's a hoot.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
It is a hoot. That sounds fantastic. So what night
is that again?

Speaker 4 (14:41):
That's October twenty fourth. That's a Friday evening seven pm,
Saturday the twenty fifth at two and seven and on
Sunday the twenty sixth at one in five pm.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
Something I've noticed, Colleen, whenever I go to any of
the productions that Ballet Palm Beach puts on and that
involves a fairy tale, I'm always very pleasantly surprised that
it is not, in fact a children's performance. And what

(15:14):
I love is how much more closely your productions mirror
the original fairy tale.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Those are the grim version.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
Because again, Halloween, spooky season, that's my favorite as opposed
to kind of the disnified version that the majority of
people are used to. Where did that thought process come from?

Speaker 4 (15:41):
I always start my works if they're narratives with the
original literature that they come from, whether it's Romeo and
Juliet or Snow White or Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. So
that is the inspiration and seeing the darkness in it.

(16:02):
While we have modified the depth of the darkness, there
is definitely, you know, a sense of eeriness involved with it.
You have to carry a ballet, you have to carry
the storyline without words spoken. So I often will add

(16:22):
in this case there are characters. They're called the Mist,
and they kind of flow from one scene to the
next to help us, like understand the mood or temperament
of that particular section of the work. So it's I
have great joy in creating what we create a ballet pumpeach.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
So the Mist is almost like for those true theater
buffs out there, sort of what the original Greek chorus might.

Speaker 4 (16:52):
Yes, absolutely, and they're not missed as an s t
they're missed as an m y s tea as in mystical.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
So so truly the Greek chorus, Yes, yes, I love it.
So I like how you like read the original and
then create and create the choreography and the whole ballet
performance from that.

Speaker 4 (17:16):
Yes, and also using music that would have been We
have music that was written in the twelve hundreds that
we use for some of the sections in the ballet.
So it's this very renaissance sounding it's very interesting music,

(17:39):
some of it.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
So how do we get tickets?

Speaker 4 (17:41):
Oh, well, you can call the box office at the
Kravit Center or visit Ballet Palmbeach dot org and all
tickets are forty nine dollars. It's a very reasonable price point.
And we hope that men, many children and children at

(18:02):
heart come to see this.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
And I know that you were just a second ago
talking about the music and it says snow White and
other works, And a little birdie told me that the
other works portion of it is an original, a new original,
because of course these are all Ballet Pond Beach, your

(18:25):
original productions. But it's a new one and the music
is going to be very different.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
Yes it is.

Speaker 4 (18:34):
We're using Appalachian inspired music, not bluegrass with words, but
definitely that's the vibe. It's called Firefly Summer and it
is about I have done so much research now and
concerning the Appalachian Mountains and use that as the spring

(18:57):
board for like creating mood than the piece. So I
mean it sort of goes with us with you know,
there's always talk of ghost in the mountains, so while
there we don't have literal ghost on the stage, there
are feelings of long ago stories that are showing.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Up on the stage. So and not wait, very exciting.
I love it. So of course, then you also have
coming up in December, the crowd favor the Nutcracker, Yes
we do.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
It is a crowd favorite and it's absolutely become this magical,
ginormous production on the main stage at the Kravis Center.
This season, we will have five performances again and they
are over the course of the first weekend of December,

(19:52):
and that's the fifth, sixth, and seventh, and again five,
like I said, five shows. Tickets for that production art
at twenty dollars and it is such a joyful production
that I would encourage families to get together, put on
their Sunday best and come to the Kravis Center, our beautiful,

(20:14):
beautiful venue. Make a tradition. The Christmas tree will be
up in the lobby too.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
It is a great photo op. And I know I've
said this before my own stories with it was the
one thing no matter where we were with the family,
finances or anything, my mother would always plan. And I
knew I was going to get a new velvet dress,
patent leather shoes just for the annual Nutcracker. And that

(20:44):
weekend isn't particularly important because Ballet Palm Beach is Palm
Beach County's professional ballet company and this is your chance,
only chance to see the professional Nutcracker production, So that weekend.

(21:04):
I would encourage anyone to start that tradition because it's
still it's some of my earliest memories, some of my
most memorable, and it just had this profound effect on
me and made me truly appreciate and love the arts
in it. You never know what kind of impact you're
you know, a production might have, but I know for
me it was the Nutcracker.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
Oh, very true. And of course you guys keep the
prices low by doing some really fun fundraisers, Yes we
do so your big annual fundraising gala, Gala by the Sea,
is coming up Wednesday, January twenty eighth. How can people
get tickets for that.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
Again, they can visit our website at Ballet Pumpach dot
org or they can call the Ballet at five six
one six three zero eight two three five. The gala
is actually spectacular and fun. There's a lot of there's
a lot of fundraisers that aren't full of the fun

(22:04):
part of that, but ours is. At the same time,
I think it's elegant and whimsical. It is just a
really special night. And this year King Neptune and his
mermaids will definitely be showing up, so you don't want
to miss that.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
And of course this year you're actually going to be
honoring one of your generous donators. Donors all the.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Years we are, Anka Palettes has become I call her
the fairy godmother of Ballet Palm Beach. She has spearheaded
so many fundraisers for us. She has spoken out about
the quality of the company to people who know stuff
they know about ballet, and she came along beside us

(22:49):
probably ten years ago and has helped to see our
organization really expand and grow. It's wonderful. She's amazing woman.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Oh that's fantastic. And of course the fun doesn't end there.
Of course the season continues. This is with Queen Esther
in March, right, Yes, Oh, that's gonna be the Rinker Playhouse.
So nice intimate show it is that.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
It's a wonderful intimate production. Last let's see, we did
it two years ago and we're bringing it back because
we had people turned away at the door because it's
sold out, So we don't we want people to try
again if they were trying in two thousand and twenty
three to come and see it.

Speaker 2 (23:34):
No, yes, twenty.

Speaker 4 (23:35):
Three, So come and see us doing Queen Esther. It
is based on the biblical story of Queen Esther, and
it's pretty timely. It has to do with the persecution
of the Jewish people and it's it's a beautiful story
and I'm happy to be able to share it again.

(23:57):
I think it's more pertinent now than ever before.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
So we definitely get the tickets and go to Cravis
dot org or Ballet Pompbeach dot org. Exactly right, and
I like that. And then of course two more shows
for the season. Yes, tell us a little bit about Carmen.
That's gonna be went in April.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
April. Carmen's Hot and Steamy, and that's what it is.
It is sexy, sexy, sexy, and the story. While Queen
Esther will feel like if there's redemption at the end,
there's not a lot of redemption at the end of Carmen.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
Two people die. Just that's you know, sorry.

Speaker 4 (24:32):
Spoiler alert, but it is. Again, it was a great
performance that we're bringing back because people absolutely loved it.
And that evening we're also presenting a world premiere of
Shizu Yesuda's Sanctus at Work that she created exclusively for

(24:54):
Ballet Pomp Beach, So I'm so excited to share that
with the audience. That set of performances is limited. There
are only three performances and they're a special seating. We're
doing cabaret style seating in the front of the theater,
so come see the hot, steamy Carmen up close and
personal while you're drinking your cocktail. This is gonna be fun.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
I think that's fantastic And like I'm reading and I
was reading for you got here. It's gonna be like
some of the Grigorian chants style stuff. I love that
Yes with.

Speaker 4 (25:28):
Jesus piece has Gregorian chant in it and it is
it's a very moving piece. It's her work is stunning
and always surprising.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
So hey, well that's good because some people want to
come back and seat again, ye and again because each
time it was a little bit different. That's right.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
And I was happily surprised that this season will actually
end with your production of just like That's like how
Shakespeare has to top hits, even Broadway has those big
names that anybody and everybody knows in the world of ballet,

(26:10):
Gazelle is definitely one.

Speaker 4 (26:13):
Of the I think so, yes, absolutely, I chose to
do it in honor of Ancapolits. It is her favorite ballet.
It is going to be presented at Dreyfus Hall. It
is the pinnacle of beautiful romantic period ballet. The music

(26:33):
is absolutely divine. It makes you cry all by itself,
and it is a very Yes, it's a romantic story
of falling in love, being betrayed and forgiving.

Speaker 3 (26:48):
So it's just so beautiful.

Speaker 4 (26:51):
I hope people will come and see us. And it
is at the Big Hall, so there are lots of
tickets available. It's May sixteenth. There are two performing is
on that day at two pm and seven pm.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
And to encourage every to come try this. The tickets
for this one are also starting at twenty dollars. Yes,
they are, so I think that's fantastic, so you can
get those students to come out, people who may not
have ever checked out Ballet. This is a great show because,
like you said, it's such a huge, big theater, big
stage masterpiece. Yes, and it's going to be on the
Dryves big stage. So like some of the fun ones

(27:25):
in the rinker, be very intimate, but the drivers gives
you that big like and when you're seeing it anywhere
in the theater, the resonance of the music it's just beautiful.
So I definitely recommend that. So again they go to
ticket get tickets.

Speaker 4 (27:39):
Where Ballet Pump Beach dot org, Orcravis dot org.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Cool. And they can also become a donor or a
sponsor by calling you five six one six three zero
eight two three five eight two three five And as
a donor you get a ton of special perks, yes,
and benefits. You get to really know the dancers, you
might even get time with you whenever you have a moment,

(28:07):
but you get special receptions, invitations to things. It's absolutely
absolutely a huge benefit.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
And what is the name of that special donor level.

Speaker 4 (28:21):
Well, we have a group of individuals who are really
special to the ballet and they're part of the Arabesque Circle.
Those are donors that donate over two thousand.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
Dollars a year.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
But we do have a really special group and there
are Young Friends and for one hundred dollars a year
they receive discounts on every ticket, not only a ticket
to the theater, but a ticket to the gala, a
ticket to any fundraising that we do. And we have
special Young Friends' Nights on Friday at the Ballets and

(28:55):
they get a.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Free cocktail pays for itself two shows. That's right, it
really does. I think that's fantastic. So for students who

the Ester Center and became a very complicated name called

We want to train as many dancers as possible, and
we've been doing it for a very long time.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Is there a starting age for dance? I mean, someone's
fifty and they're interested in dancing. Is there something just
like dancing for growth and movement for adults as well?

Speaker 4 (30:33):
Absolutely, there's no minimum. There's a minimum age of three
years old and there's no maximum age. We had one
woman who was taking ballet classes in her eighties, So
please come on. Try on those tights, put on those
ballet slippers. If we dance, we always feel better, keeps

our minds active.

So good for us.

Speaker 4 (30:59):
Dancing is just one of the best forms of exercise
and we can't.

Speaker 2 (31:04):

gyms and stuff. I mean so yes, and just even
watching it. It's your productions never fail to inspire me.
