welcome my guests for. Today i've Got Lauren, Perry associate
vice president Of marketing And Cultural tourism from The Cultural
council For Palm Beach. County good, morning.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Good, morning thanks for having me on Deb.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Oh thanks for coming. In AND i, know like my
what's happening line if you guys send me all kinds
of cool things that are happening the month Of. May
you have this really cool thing Called mosaic going. On
so what Is mosaic for the listeners in?
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Me, sure The Mosaic celebration is something that The Cultural
council does every single. Year mosaic stands For month Of, Shows,
art ideas And, Culture and AS i, said it's literally
a celebration that lasts all month. Long and the great
part about it is that we secure deals and discounts
at most of our cultural cultural attractions here In Palm Beach.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
County oh that's so. Cool SO i know there's also
opportunities for folks to go engage with the. Artists like.
You there's one where you can go watch them for.
FREE i believe this coming this. Weekend that's right On
may seventeenth and.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Eighteenth Palm Beach County Open studios is. Happening it's from
ten am to three pm and basically it's an self
guided tour of open studios across the entire. County this
is the third year that we've done this program and
we have over one hundred artists. Participating so you can
(08:38):
explore artist studios in the town where you, live or
maybe you can take a day trip to another town
in the county that you haven't been to in a,
while get some lunch and go meet some artists that
live and work.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
There oh that's really. Cool so is their website they
can go to to find out the locations and the
different artists that'll be.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Performing, yeah so the Open studios website is Open STUDIOS
pbc Like Palmbach coounty dot. Com Open STUDIOS pbc dot
COM i love.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
It how you make it easy for, us.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Right.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Cool so obviously you're the associate vice president For marketing
And Cultural. Tourism what does The Cultural council as a
as a whole do for the? County deb kind of like.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
You we are a resource for our local residents to
find things to, do but we're also a resource for
tourists who are coming to Visit Pombach county to experience
what we.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Call florida's cultural.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Capital so we have a website full of online events
that that are coming, up so you can plan your,
trip you can plan your. Weekend we actually have an
art gallery in our own building where we're showing off art. Exhibitions,
uh with Local Pombach county.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Artists, oh that's really, cool AND i believe on your
website there's a location they can go and actually look up. Artists.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Right we have an artist. DIRECTORY i think we're over
six hundred and fifty artists in that artist directory at this,
point and it's all kinds of different. Artists it's not
just traditional painters or. Sculptors we also have, performers, actors.
Musicians this is the place for artists who are living
and working In Palm Beach county to put their name
(10:22):
on a website and we help drive traffic to the
website so they get exposure and they might get gigs
out of.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
It oh that's. Fantastic, WELL i, know iHeart. Does like
the holiday party for the staff and. Everything, Yes and
one year they had a really cool well they had
two really cool artists AND i would either like they
were somewhat like comedians in a, way but they were
actually the artist where they draw your picture very.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Quickly, okay like a caricature.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Cartoon so a caricature. Artist so you, go you sit,
down and the gentleman THAT i, got he's, like, oh
so somebody's joking about me baking cakes because they make
the chipsy. Case OH i make cakes to, You so like,
yeah like partifiicat do you? Read yes these Questions and
he draws a picture of me very quickly holding a
cupcake with the cat on my lap with a book
in my other. Hand it was just the cutest. Thing
AND i was, like so he would talk to, everybody
(11:09):
like the one guy was in the, golfing so all
of a sudden he's standing there getting ready to tee.
Off but like with the character of his face in
the Teen Tiny.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Body it was just. Amazing it's fun and has. Personality
it sounds, like oh the, personality and everybody. Laughed we
had good time with, Him so he had the he
wasn't just like some artists gets super focused and they
don't have the because they're focused on the.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Art they're not, chatting they're not.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Interacting it's definitely a skill and everybody has different talents
and skill. SETS i was recently at Ben Zeiten center
for The, arts which is a glass blowing foundry where
different artists can go in and use their, ovens And
i'm not sure exactly what all the terms, are but
it is amazing to go because you can actually watch
(11:50):
the artists create the glass, artwork and so many of
them even though they're dealing with hot molten glass and
things and blow, torches and they literally will talk to
you through the process because they learn to make the
art in a. Group you, know there's lots of helpers
and so they're constantly communicating with each. Other SO i
(12:11):
do think a lot of artists have that ability to
communicate and kind of put on a, show and that's
a great thing about the artist directory is that if
someone's looking for that type of person to present something
at a, party an, event you, know any kind of special.
Activity we have those kinds of artists in our. Directory
(12:31):
OH i think it's, fantastic And i'm sure you like.
Me you've done the paint and sip kind of thing with. Friends,
Sure AND i had a FRIEND i was, Like, Oh.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
I'm gonna go do. This she's, like, oh so they
give you the thing with like the she think is
color by number And i'm, like, no, no, no it
is a blank. Canvas she's, like how does that. Work i'm, like,
well they just talk to you and guide you through,
it and they're just so encouraging and everybody's completely different
when they're, done but they all look.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
Amazing we have a, wonderful wonderful relationship with many arts
who are also, educators so that is a very educational
scenario where they've turned their skill to teach people how
to create art into something fun that you can do
as a group activity with your. Friends and we definitely
hire artists to support our artists in My Backyard Family saturday,
(13:19):
programs which are helping to get arts into neighborhoods where
maybe people don't have access to do that with kids and.
Families but there's definitely a lot of artists out there
that are supplementing their income because they have those teaching.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Abilities SO i think The arts In My backyard is.
Fantastic they may is you get your green on for
mental health? Awareness, yes And i've talked with the folks
Of Palm. Health one of the good things for your
mental health is to participate in the. Arts that's, right
whether you're physically doing the, painting the, drawing or going
to the museum and checking it out and just looking at,
(13:58):
it or going to the cra and enjoying a musical
performance or you, know a poem. Slam you, know.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
You know what about taking a dance class.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Is performing.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Arts making music is performing, arts and it's it is,
very very good for your mental. Health and The Cultural
council has been partnering with a number of organizations around
the county following this arts and wellness. Theme we actually
just recently Renamed we have an outdoor space behind our.
Building it's a it's a cute little fenced in backyard
(14:35):
and that's where The arts in My backyard program. Started
but that space is now called the arts and wellness
space and we're using it to offer yoga and sound bath.
Classes we Had Digital vibes come out and teach some
really fun dance and movement. Classes it was almost all
(14:55):
day long One. Saturday so that's the kind of thing
that we'll be.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Doing Digital. Vibes they are just. Awesome AND i know
we have A Let's move Pomp Beach county month and
this Year Digital lives is continuing that to make it
a three sixty five so every day of the. Year that's.
Wonderful so because people really benefit from that movement and,
ENGAGEMENT i like it. Absolutely So obviously it's part of your.
Mosaic you said you've reached out and you've coordinated with
(15:18):
different different arts doyement and you've coordinated with the different
folks In Palm Beach county to offer limited time discounts or.
Offers SO i know the MORE cammi has like a
two dollars off admission for the entire month as part of.
This what else did you come? Up who else have
you contracted? With?
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Sure as you mentioned, earlier we Have bogo admission deals
set up with our art, Museum so The Norton museum
Of art The Boca Ratone museum Of. Art if you're
looking for family friendly, activities you can go to the,
zoo The Palm Beach, zoo or Cock Science center And
aquarium for bogo. Admission there's also a discount to climb
(15:58):
The Jupiter Inlet Light. House so there's a lot of
really fun. Activities we have dozens of organizations participating this.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
YEAR i think it's what one hundred and fifty seven
steps for the lighthouse something like, That so it's a
lot of, steps, folks but now you're. Tripping there was no,
elevator so if you can get, up you have people
get back to. Own but it's a cool thing to.
DO i actually. WENT i didn't climb the. Lighthouse i'd
friends doing, that but we went into like their little museum.
Area Well i'm not originally from, here so the history
(16:26):
part was so. Amazing i'm, like, oh so that's why
it's Called Fort. Lauderdale it was really a. Fort at
one point they're, like, right, yeah and they just didn't.
REALIZE i just never been exposed to that because you
grow up In pennsylvania and you Get pennsylvania state. History you
grew up In, florida you Get Florida state. History so
it was really. Neat if you've not been exposed to the,
history definitely go check it. Out AND i know they
have these really fun like the yoga classes under the
(16:47):
big tree on the platform up there's so.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
DO i think it's it's an evening, class and there's
a lot of organizations that take advantage of the cooler
evening hours to offer. Pros like you said the sunset
stroll At. Morecamie so as we go into, summer maybe it's,
hot maybe it's, rainy you can find things to do
in the evenings where it's when the weather's a little
bit nicer and get to enjoy those.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Spaces, yeah well in this, one you don't know to
around being, rainy BECAUSE i think this one's. Cool one
of the events you guys have set up and coordinated
is the scavenger hunt At Resource, Depot So i'm, like
how fun is.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
That Resource depot is such an interesting. Place they are
so creative in promoting their mission to reduce and reuse
instead of just creating, waste and they have their own
art gallery and their space as. Well so if you've
never been To Resource depot In West palm. BEACH i
(17:45):
recommend everybody go check that out at least.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Once oh, yeah AND i know they. Have of, course
we're wrapping up the school year, now but like in
the Summer august ish kind of, time they start offering
reaching out to the teachers for them to come get
the stuff they need for their, classroom and, said sometimes it's,
free sometimes it's, discounted depending on what it. Is BUT
i did speak with the folks From Resource depot a
couple of years, ago and they, said part of like
(18:08):
obviously their mission is to you, know the, reuse, reduce
recycle all that kind of stuff and keep things out
of the. Landfill so they had at that point set
up a thing with some of the storage, places and
like after like a year and they don't pay for a,
year the storage people will empty it out because they
need to re rent. It so they would reach out
To Resource deepot and, say, okay we're emptying these out
(18:29):
come get the. Stuff and they would come and take
as much as they. Could and you know some stuff
that you know is, junk you, know so they would
take as much as they. Could and at one point
they HAD i think they, said like a couple palettes
worth of like the paint roller plastic insert thing but
heavy duty once so had the little prongs and stuff on.
It they took them because they didn't want to go into,
(18:49):
landfill but they really didn't know what to do with.
It then an elementary school teacher came in saw one
sitting there and they're, like how many more of these
do you? Have and they like, lots and she took
them and had the kids paint, them hung them on
the wall so the hooks were down at the bottom
facing out so they could put their little jackets and
their little backpacks on their, hooks and they had their
(19:10):
individual names on, it so they're you know What i'm,
Saying but what a clever. Idea they had the kids decorating,
themselves super easy. Function at the end of the, year
they got to take it with. Them next year the
new kids did into the. Batch BUT i was, like
what a CLEVER idea.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Resource depot is a wonderful place where you can come
up with ideas to do arts and crafts with your,
kids or if you're a, teacher to get school. SUPPLIES
i know artists whose shop there to get found objects
to create, mosaics or maybe they're looking for like old
magazines to create collages or. Fabrics so it's definitely a
(19:48):
resource for. Everybody there's treasures in there for.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Everybody oh, yes AND i know they go to Artie
gras AND i was there one year and these little
kids were coming. By it was like these really cool
like like pirate hats and by and it was like
it looked like it was made out of green palm
fronds and it was really. Hot i'm, like oh my,
gosh where'd you buy. That she's, like we didn't buy.
It we made. Though and they were taking, newspapers just
(20:11):
newspaper and like, origami you, know folding it the right
way and showing the kids how to put it. Together
like with the folds it would hold no tape or,
anything just and then they let them painted and color
it and off they went AND i was, like clever,
again the. Cleverness they are very.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Clever And what's one of the THINGS i love about
being at The Cultural council is you're surrounded by really
creative people who come up with so many fun ideas
and it's really engaging and you have a lot of
these aha you, know it's we have a really amazing community.
Here of artists and creative. Thinkers, oh absolutely, yes AND
(20:49):
i know you have some mother cool summer. Things we,
have say The Schoolhouse Children's museum And Point beach just.
Participating they Are Schoolhouse Children's, museum which is a really
fun cool thing to do because it's. Inside so if
you're looking for family friendly things indoors mention some of
the other museums that you can go.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
To you can always go to The Pump Beach culture
dot com right find everything that listed. There.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
Correct, yes definitely come to go To Palm beach culture dot.
Com look for our online events. Listing you can also
find the artist directory and we actually do have summer
camp listing for cultural. Arts the way you'd find that
is from our. Homepage go down into our footer and
you'll see the link for the summer. Camps and that's
(21:35):
where you can find things like going to a theater
camp or going to a science. Camp and there's lots
of listings and availabilities.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
There oh AND i courage your parents to go do.
That so if your kids are into, sports, arts, science
there's gonna be a summer camp for. Them it's amazing AND.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
I hope they take advantage of the remaining deals here
In may for The, mosaic and don't forget to also
inspire your kids and take them around to some artist
studios At Pombe County Open.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Studios oh. Definitely and one of the THINGS i know
you have coming, up like you, said there's The bogos
at The Norton museum Of art and the Book Reteau
museum Of. Art SO i think it's cool that you
have the summer camps on the website because no matter
what your kid likes to, do there's gonna be a summer
camp for. Me AND i Know Army Art center does
a lot of summer, camps, Right that's.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Right they do ways to go and experiment with different,
materials art techniques and learning about culture and art styles
from around the. World there's also camps listed For Cox Science,
center which is going to be science and. Tech i'm
sure there's also theater workshops from some of our local
theater companies and maybe dance companies.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Too oh, absolutely, Yes SO i love. THAT i think
it's so. Cool and then another THING i know this
is actually going backwards in time a little, bit So
yesteryear The Yesteryear Village Living History park At South Florida
fairgrounds is also participating in The.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Mosaic correct they, Are and when you mentioned history, earlier
this is a very family friendly activity to. Do they
have a series of historic buildings on their property at
The South Florida fairgrounds and you can go. In there's
a lot of things that you can look and touch
and feel and see old fire trucks and how people
(23:17):
used to live way before we lived.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
Here and for, definitely AND i know one of my
friends kids volunteers. There, oh because you're the kids neither
a student service hours community service, Hours, yes and they love.
It they love volunteering. There that's so that's another THING
i want to bring. Up there's lots of volunteer opportunities
and all these different. Charities so and of course you
go to the website find the different summer camps and
of course if you're an older teen sometimes they're looking
(23:42):
for people to help work at the summer camp and
be Counselor so if your kids are a little bit
older and interested in doing, that have them check the
website and then reach out and see if there's any
opening still going on for. That it's a great. Idea
and then of course everybody loves The Loggerhead Marine Life
center because it's, Turtles so tell me about.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
That one, Sure loggerhead has nighttime guided sea walks coming,
up are guided turtle walks coming up because this is
turtle nesting, season, right so you know we're all supposed
to be dimming our, lights especially if you live along the,
beach and keep things dark for the turtles because you
don't want to confuse. Them and they start to offer
(24:20):
the nighttime turtle walks that you can actually see turtles
laying their. Eggs and then later in the summer they'll
do a turtle walk so that you can see the turtles,
Hatching so make sure you keep an eye. OUT i
know those spots fill up. Fast Loggerhead Marine life does the.
WALKS i Believe MacArthur Beach State park also does turtle.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Walks, YEAH i was luckily enough to do the walk
With MacArthur beach a few years. Ago absolutely. Fascinating so you,
know they they'll have a spot or that's you, know
sitting off the edge and they see the turtles come.
Up there's a very small group for Each they're very
limited in size because you can't you, know obviously you
don't want to starve the. Turtles you go up and
(25:00):
just like very quietly. Watch and we watched our turtle
and we're getting ready to leave and the guys like, stop, stop,
stop and we're like. What another turtle was coming. Up
so it was between us and the, exit and he's, like,
everybody have a, seat we're gonna we get to watch
a second. One and we. Did it was so. Cool
that's and they lay so many. Eggs.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
Amazing AND i recently learned that the, temperature the temperature
of the sand decides if the egg is going to
be male or.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
FEMALE i read that as. Well isn't that? Amazing so?
Amazing AND i do know, also, like so if you
go to the beach during the day and you make
your little sand, castle make sure you break all that stuff.
Down make sure you take all your litter and everything
off the beach so they've got a clear path to
