Speaker 1 (00:01):
iHeart Communities Presents Palm Beach Treasure Coast Perspective, which Dad
and new.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning, Welcome to Calm Beach Treasure Coast Perspective. I'm
your host, dev Nev. Thanks for spending your weekend with me.
All kinds are great things going on, and to help
me tell you all about that, I want to welcome
my guest for today. Good morning, Elizabeth Deshield. Good morning,
dev Hey, thanks for coming in. So many things cool
things happening. This is really neat the East Boyton Blaze
baseball team is doing their second annual charity golf tournament.
(00:30):
So basically, the folks go out and play golf and
raise money for the kids for their baseball team so
they can travel and do all the training and stuff.
So I think it's really cool. The second annual Blazeballer
Charity Golf Tournament is happening on Saturday, May thirty first,
once at the prestigious Banyon Golf Club, So of course,
is raising crucial funds to help the team's journey to
the World Series tournaments in Pigeonforge and Tennessee and Cooperstown,
(00:54):
New York. So they're gonna be going both places. Which
I think is fantastic, And for more information about getting
tickets and call them at three five to two two
six y two nineteen hundred or go to the website
blaze b l a Ze Baller b A L L
e r dot com blazeballer dot com and they're happy
to hook you up with the tickets for you and
(01:14):
your friends. Go play some golf and have fun and
raise money for a good cause while you're doing it.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
I remember when our local team made it to the
Little League World Series and it was crazy. I don't
know a single person who wasn't watching, so congrats to
them on making it to the World Series. It sounds fantastic.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
What do you have going on? I know there's lots
of cold stuff happening.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Oh my goodness, there is so much happening. I actually
have things grouped together, and i'd love to start off
with a couple of our museums and just a reminder
that we only have deb until May eleventh. To take
advantage of having a Gilded Age style T and railcar
number ninety one at the Flagler, and I say it
(02:00):
every season, I'm going to do a Gilded Age T
in the Historic railcar. Of course, Flagler being the man
who built the eastern seaboard of the US, the former
partner in the Standard Oil Company with JD. Rockefeller, and
his Whitehall Museum is truly a walk through the history
(02:24):
of not just Palm Beach County, but Florida as a whole.
And they also have beautiful works including the Ethereal Worlds
a Maxfield Parish and of course he was just a
genius and evoking a dreamlike world between reality and reverie.
(02:45):
And this is all Gilded era style art. So you
can go into a museum that is itself a work
of art and check out some actual work of art.
Speaking of art, we can't without speaking of Florida's largest
art museum, that's the Norton and they always have really
(03:06):
cool things going on. Sorilla and the Sea is running
now through April thirteenth, and they also have surroundings video
encounters of nature that is running through June twenty ninth. Dreamland,
the Intriguing World of the Subconscious is only going on
(03:29):
through May seventeenth, and Art of the World calligraphy and
Chinese artists is running through June twenty ninth. All of
those things are running concurrently because of course they have
all those multiple galleries featuring unbelievable name dropping artists from
(03:49):
all times. So if you get a chance, you can go,
and if you want to have a little fun, don't
forget they are still having Art after Dark on Fridays
from five to ten, where they not only have the
galleries open for you to go through with docent lead
tours or on your own, but there are also hands
on activities. They always have a different live musical act,
(04:12):
they'll have drinks, you can have yourself a nice little beverage,
and the hands on activities are different every Friday night,
so you can kind of take your turn at being
an artist. And you just go to Norton andrto n
dot org for more information.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
And speaking of museums, we've talked to the folks from
the Spady Cultural Museum in Delray Beach and they are
currently one of the beneficiaries for the Target Circle. So
you can go to the Target app, open up my Target,
or go to target dot com, click your account, click
cast votes, and then you can find the Spady Cultural
(04:52):
Museum and submit your vote for them, and the voting
goes on through March thirty first and help get some
funding thing to do, and of course you can always
go to the Spady Museum take the little tour through
history bus rye air conditioned folks, so lots of cool
things happening there as well.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
It's a great way to round out Black History Month
as well, definitely and huge support. Congrats to them. You know,
we have a lot of great things going on outdoors
as well, which come on, let's take advantage of this
beautiful weather while we have it right before it gets
too unbearably hot. And our own little piece of Eden,
(05:32):
our crown jewel of the natural world in a garden
is of course Mounts Botanical Garden, and they have fantastic
events running all the way through March into April. We
have forest bathing still open and available.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
We need to do that and the tea Yes I make,
I make might have a little list of things Elizabeth
and I are gonna.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Go do, and they actually will have a tea ceremony
in the gardens, so we could literally I don't drink tea,
but I like to take part in tea taking activities.
But forest bathing, which it is a guided tour on
connecting with your surroundings wonderful for those of us that
(06:18):
need a break, need some mindfulness, and just need kind
of to step away from all of the pandemonium of
the season. And that takes place in March on the
twenty ninth and the thirtieth, and we also have all
the multiple gardens within the gardens at Mounts. You can
(06:41):
go to the Garden of Extremes, you can go to
the Gardens of Fragrances and find out where the essences
of all your favorite perfumes and colognes are found and
leading you throughout it is the current exhibition running right now.
Rib It the exhibit.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
It is.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
It's so adorable. You're walking through this otherworldly garden and
suddenly you see this life size froggy friend in a
different pose, and each one of them have a different name,
and you can even get a sort of scavender hunt
to try and find all of the frogs in the
Ribbit the exhibit, and they each have a really cool
(07:22):
backstory as well. So it's just this added element to
give you a neat little surprise around every corner while
you take advantage of many of the cool activities that happen.
I know, I said, Tea, what I meant was Kasa
the Kasa ritual, which is you really should just go
(07:43):
to mount dot org and read all about it. I
want to save us time for a bunch of other
things going on. Do you have more outdoors I have
lots more outdoor fund things. So Pompeage County ERM is
the Pompage County Environmental Resource Management folks. So they go
like in the natural air because we have our pompe
County Parks, and then the URN folks handle the other
(08:04):
natural areas, so they've got poddleboarding. They have some astronomy
things on lots of different hikes. They'll do like post
prescribe burn hikes so you can go through and see,
like how the habitat changes after a burn because some
of the plants only open and plume after a fire,
or like that. In nature it'll be like a lightning
strike or something causing the fire. So but they do
(08:26):
it on purpose to like make sure the vegetation stuff
stays under control. But then we can go hike and
check it out. So go to pbcer M dot com
and all the different hikes and classes and stuff are there.
You know, I have to say, as a fourth generation
Florida native here. I kind of feel sometimes like I
(08:46):
know it all, all the flora, all the fauna. I
did one arm paddleboarding outing with them and discovered all
the research and the work that's being done to protect
what little natural environment we still have left. And I
learned about behaviors of extremely rare birds that only live
(09:07):
in mass congregations on these tiny little spoil islands that
only in the past fifteen years were established as a
protective barrier for our coastal community as well as our wildlife.
Just a wealth of information that you garner from this
beautiful outing and it's free.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Oh yeah, well, that's what Benji was saying when we
had our discussion about the programs. A lot of the
volunteers that are leading these excursions are the actual professional
scientists that do this for a living, yes, and they're
so excited about sharing what they do in the knowledge
with everybody else. They volunteer do these things on the
weekend for free, and you.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Could fill your day, You could fill every day just
taking advantage of these wonderful offerings for all of us
who are fortunate enough to live here. And you meet
some really cool people along the way that was part
of the fun.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Oh absolutely And then also speaking outside, in Saint Lucie County,
they have SLC Hikes dot Org and it's all they have,
all those nature preserves and every everything up there. So
coming up on Wednesday, March twenty six, from nine to
eleven am, this one is the Butterflies of Paleo Hike
at the Paleohammock Preserve. And it's because springs out, you know,
(10:27):
the butterfliers are starting to emerge from their little chrystalis
and stuff. So Debby check that out. Go to SLC
hikes dot org and they're all listed on there. And
they also now have actually some paddles as well, and
there's one where it's like a like an intro to
disc golf and so like Eric will do the walk
and the first part of the hike they have added
(10:48):
disc golf sections. They teach you how and then you
go on through the rest of the preserve for the
rest of the hikes. So lots are really cool things.
And also speaking outside, we just talked to Miss Wendy
from more Calming a few weeks to go, so I've
got lots of fun things. I like how she calls
it the March Happiness in the Garden, So coming up
March twenty third and March thirtieth and April sixth, thirteenth,
(11:10):
and the twenty seventh. This is called the Art of Bonzai.
It's an advanced studio session. So it's a really cool class.
I want to sign up for that one. And then
March twenty ninth is for adults and it's calligraphy, so
all the pretty handwriting, which I probably should take that class.
But you can call them at five six one four nine,
five zero two three three or just go to morecommed
(11:33):
dot org and everything's listened on there. You can sign
up for the programs.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
I wish I could say it improved her handwriting, but
it doesn't. Actually, I'm doomed one of those classes that
I took in my elementary school and you hand me
my calligraphy pen. I'll write something beautiful, but a day
to day illegible. It's it's a beautiful art. It's another
thing that helps you earn concentration too.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Oh yeah, and I think I'll help you stress a
little bit away because you're focusing on something else.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Absolutely, and instead of the traditional outdoors exploration, we have
a different kind of outdoor game coming up. It is
the return of the International Gay Polo Tournament in Wellington.
Such a fun event. It's April twenty fourth through twenty
(12:24):
six and do you know they are celebrating fifteen years.
I cannot believe it. Where's the time gone?
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Oh? I know, Chip is doing such a great job
with that. That is such a cool program and so inclusive.
Everybody comes out and it's just so much fun. And
if you know nothing about polo, it's a great one
to go because everybody's so willing to explain and it's
you know, really fun, engaging, high energy.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Yes, and as always the Friday evening GPL Polo TEENI
presents wig Stock. It's a party that gives the revelers
the opportunity to dress up and their most fabulous ensembles
and no trey wigs. The higher the hair, the closer
to Heaven is what they say. So it's a great
(13:08):
way to kick off the International Gay Polo Tournament in
Wellington on April twenty fourth through twenty six. And you
can just go to Gaypolo dot com to get more information.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Oh definitely, and they're so nice speaking getting more information.
You have a couple more like business see things. If
you haven't done it yet, The volunteer tax assistance folks
are still available in both Saint Lucie County and pom
Beach County. It's the VIDA tax program is part of
the United Way initiative. So the IRS comes and trains
volunteers on the most recent laws and things for filing taxes,
(13:45):
and they volunteer their time to help you file your taxes.
So in Saint Lucie County, if you make sixty seven
thousand or less, and in Palmeach County, I think it's
seventy four thousand or less, they're available to help you.
Simply called two one one and they'll tell you in
your area where the locations are and like you need
to bring your like your W two and all the
forms and stuff you need to bring with you. It
is a free service. It does take a little bit
(14:07):
of time, so be patient, but know that these people
are doing it just for free on your behalf. And
it's so cool. I did it this year, super easy,
and they know, like I said, they know all the
latest deductions that I would not have known about. And
then the other thing they're doing the City of Fort
Pierce Grants Division, Winston invite folks who tend a free
first time home buyer workshop and helps you navigate the
(14:29):
whole home buying process, which you know can be a
little tricky. It's going to be the Riverwalks Center on Thursday,
April seventeenth from five point thirty to six thirty. Simply
call them seven seven to two for six seven thirty
one sixty nine to get more details on that. And
of course, don't forget a swing by the Fen Center
(14:50):
because they have a bunch of wonderful exhibitions happening now
as they're celebrating Women's History Month, so they always have
cool things happening, their classes and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Oh that is cool and more cerebral things. Don't forget
at the Kravis Center. They have the neuro Arts Conference
twenty twenty five. This is brilliant. They have these outstanding
guest speakers who talk about the convergence between the arts
and the mind and all of the many benefits that
(15:21):
you can gain from it. And while we're in theater,
let's check out some of the other things going on,
and that is this coming Tuesday, the Cravis is the
opening of Moulin Rouge the musical and anybody who's ever
seen the movie, like me, I cannot wait to check
out the Broadway show as a multiple Tony Award winner
(15:44):
and always a blast. And also coming up at the
Cravis two really cool shows fifty four below at the Ranker.
And for those of our New York listeners who are
Broadway babies, they know that fifty four below is this
particular place where the top Broadway stars will go and
(16:06):
do a solo cabaret sho. Well, the Cravis Center's brought
that here to West Palm Beach. And our next one
is Maurzio Martinez and he is a huge name in
the Broadway world. He played the original Emilio Estevez in
On Your Feet, the original Broadway musical about the Miami
(16:30):
sal Machine, and he is coming again April fourth and fifth.
And then with that little marriage of the mind and
the arts, their Lunch and learn, which is where you
get this delicious five star lunch and an expert lecture.
And the upcoming one is doctor Robert Watson, who is
(16:52):
going to be talking about the real life historical time
period of the era of Limbs rob So which will
of course be their next Cravis on Broadway show, but
you can find out what life was actually like during
the time of Jean Valjean and Fantine and everyone else
(17:16):
in the Beautiful Musical, and that is April seventh, And
for both of those you can go to Cravis or
all of that. You can go to Cravis dot org.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
So obviously Cravis dot org where you go get all
the information about the shows and stuff, but sometimes there's
a little maybe like a sneak peek of things coming,
So can you tell us anything about that.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
I can actually just tune in to all of the
Cravis social media sites that is Facebook, Instagram, and they
are going to announce the upcoming Cravis on Broadway lineup
this Wednesday, so stay tuned to be the first to
(18:01):
know what shows are coming next season.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Oh, I can't wait to find out. This was so exciting.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Absolutely. Then we have just a real quick rundown of
theater on April eleventh through the twenty seventh. Palmby Trauma
Works has Camping with Henry and Tom running now through
April six is Guys and Dolls at the Malt Stupidter
Theater running now through April thirteenth. At the Delray Beach
(18:28):
Playhouse is Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, and
of course we just have a slew of other wonderful
cultural happenings. Today is the last day to enjoy the
downtown Stuart Art and Craft Festival, and then on April
fifth and six, right here in West Palm Beach we
(18:51):
have the downtown West Palm Beach Art Festival, so tons
of visual, performing art and NonStop activities.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
For all that sounds like so much fun and speaking
being downtown, don't forget to put this one on your
calendar and get the tickets because they're selling out fast.
It is the Culture and Cocktails for their last one
at the Ben is coming up on Monday, April fourteenth,
and this is called the Ultimate Musical Finale with Rob Russel,
Avery Summers and some more special guests. So this is
(19:26):
like top tier folks that are going to be there,
so you definitely get your tickets. Go to Palm Beach
Culture dot com. You get tickets there and they can
also find out about all these wonderful events we're talking about.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
And that's it's a Bend the Bend downtown. Yeah, oh,
such a beautiful event. And this has been such a
wonderful gift for us from the Cultural Council and PRBs.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Oh definitely. And of course one of the big things
we want to talk about today and have you come
in and talk about is sweet Fast. So some people
I don't know what that is. I was explaining to
my coworkers like, oh, this sounds so cool. I'm like, yeah,
well this is going to come today. Help me share
that with all the listeners. Tell the listeners what exactly
is Sweetfest.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Well, first off, it isn't a festival of all things Swedish,
not at all, And that is kind of the first
thing people think of because it is spelled Swede sweed.
But it's even funnier when you find out the origin.
We are thrilled, thrilled to have Swedefest Palm Beach back
(20:26):
for its tenth year, and we have so many great plans.
So what is a Swede? A Swede is a three
minute remake of a Hollywood hit done by complete amateurs. Basically,
there was a movie was kind of a bit of
a sleeper hits called be Kind Rewind and the plot
(20:52):
of the movie was about these guys that ran a
video store and due to circumstances lost all of the
footage on the videos, so they decided to take it
upon themselves and remake the movies and then rent them
out to unsuspecting customers. And when the customers would come
(21:13):
back to the shop and say things like I don't
remember R two D two looking exactly like a garbage can,
they simply explained, oh, this is the Swedish version. So
a group of people in Fresno, California, thought that it
would be hilarious to get together and make their own
(21:35):
remakes just like the characters in the movie, using found objects,
absolute amateur actors, poorly written scripts and just do these
terribly bad remakes and then show them. And that was
the origin of the very first swede Fest and that
(21:58):
original Swedefest to win away two years ago, but they
just announced this year they are back. However, in twenty twelve,
Belfarino at Midtown Palm Beach Gardens thought wouldn't it be
great if Palm Beach had their own swede Fest and
(22:19):
complete amateurs anyone, everyone, please apply And it was an
instant success, huge hit. People had so much fun, they
roped in their family members, they used their children performing
in these adult roles, and of course we do request
that all films are PG. Thirteen or G And it's
(22:43):
really a lot of fun for some of these filmmakers
to do that with some of these films that just
had profanity or violence, and the creative solutions that they
came up with for it, like holding up a piece
of cardboard with the words blood written on it in
lieu of a violent scene, using silly string to represent
(23:08):
some of the gore from a horror movie. It's it
takes a lot of creativity and talent to be this bad,
to be honest, and it is completely side splitting. And
you know that as terrible as some of the movies
are bad, light, bad, sound, bad, acting, everything bad, it's
(23:30):
gonna last for three minutes or less, so you can
make it through that. But generally what happens is it's
screamingly funny.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Oh yeah, it's come in the past. They are so fun.
Like you said, they're bad, but they're funny. And like
you said, it's only three minutes off, it's really bad.
It's only three minutes. You're onto the next one. Where's
it happening this year? And how do listeners get tickets?
Speaker 3 (23:50):
So it is taking place March twenty eighth at the
lake Worth Playhouse, so it's pretty centrally located for everybody
in the county. And we are going to start with
a six pm where the heck is the red carpe
carpet arrival. Here's a hint, it is red, but it's
(24:10):
not carpet, And that starts at six, and then the show,
the screen reel will begin exactly at seven. And there
are a number of other things that make this particular
film festival different. One is, with it being our tenth anniversary,
(24:32):
we are going back to all past Swede festivals from
the past ten years, and we are selecting some of
the best of these bad movies. And so everyone who
comes out, if you've missed the past nine years, you
cannot miss this one. You are going to see some
of the best of the best. And of course we
(24:54):
have a good little handful of submissions for this year.
The audience votes at night on their favorite of all
these bad films, and the filmmakers themselves, we encourage them
to show up and whatever sort of idea that they
have of Hollywood red carpet, oscar director whatnot, and you
(25:18):
see some really fun and creative costumes, people bedecked in
gowns and feather boas and you know, fake pearl strands.
It could be real, but I doubt it. And you
get to vote on their films and then they get
up and they get prizes that have been donated from
some fabulous local organizations and it's just a great night
(25:41):
for all and one of the best sayings it's our
tenth year. Tickets are only ten dollars, so can't beat
that price, No, you can't. Well last year they were
only nine, but ten for ten for ten, ten ten
for ten, and you're going to get to see a
lot more than ten Swedes.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
So so they go Sweetfest Palm Beach, so at SWEETFESTPB
at gmail dot com to get more information.
Speaker 3 (26:05):
Yes, SWEEFESTPB at gmail dot com for more information, or
you can just go right now to Lakeworth Playhouse dot
org because that's where you're going to buy your tickets
and you know that. But our website is Swedefestpalmbeach dot org.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Cool, and of course buy your tickets today because it
sells out.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
It could potentially sell out.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Well, because I know that there's limited scene, like the
playhouse is pretty big, but there's still limited.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
Sea well true and some of our other underground What
happened was it started as a special event for Midtown
Palm Beach Gardens, and then even though it sold out
the Borland Theater there each year, Midtown decided that really
wasn't the intention of having these events, it was more
(26:59):
to bring people to and they said, okay, well it's
going to go away. So Belfarina reached out to me,
knowing that I was with the Pombach Film Society, and said,
do you want this event? And of course I jumped
on it because the Pombach Film Society's core mission is
to encourage filmmaking in Palm Beach County. And some of
(27:26):
the people that submit are actual professional filmmakers who are
deliberately working to make a bad film, which it still
looks great. And then some are genuine filmmakers who are
just using their skills and creativity to have a lot
of fun. And then the rest of it are people
(27:48):
who never thought about being filmmakers, but after they make
this Swede, they're all over it. And so it really
is at the core of our mission, and I said,
of course I would be happy to take it over.
What that meant, of course, is that we were doing
it on zero budget. So just like the filmmakers, we
(28:08):
encourage them not to buy anything, but to simply use
any prop they may have around. One of the things
that I love is monofilament tied to a coiled up
paper towel wad, and that represented the tornado in the
remake of Twister.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
People are so clever.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
They are so incredibly clever. There is actually one three
minute remake of the movie Aliens that was made entirely
using cardboard, and it has almost as good a quality
as the original. They really really went over the top,
(28:51):
And when I interviewed the filmmaker about it, they told
me that basically they called it their friends. They locked
them in their house for a weekend. They created cinematic masterpiece.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Very cool. This is not to discourage anybody, like just
if you and your friends want to put one together,
you can totally do it. Just for fine.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
Absolutely. One year's winner was a remake of Titanic of
two teenagers who shot it all in not any pool
but the community pool. They reshot Titanic scenes in a
community pool and took home the grand prize, And if
you watched it you would laugh so hard and completely
understand how that happened. And it's every age group. I
(29:32):
have some sweeters who are giving it a go using
just their phone in their seventies. And then we have,
of course our teenagers who cobble together a group of
friends and they with cheesy special effects and their own
script writing and they've remade every movie imaginable. But yeah,
(29:56):
we have some fun submissions this year. For the first
time ever, Weekend at Bernie. Oh, I can't wait to
see Weekend at Bernie's. It's coming and that's.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
Been long overdue.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
Yes, and Rocky, where all the characters in Rocky are
made with children underage twelve, so it's at least they're
not pet rock So it's true. It's true. Yeah, we
have stopped someone to stop motion Romeo and Juliet using
sock puppets.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Oh nice, that's gonna be very interesting.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
It is the cutest. So we have some of our
favorites from the past nine years, some really creative New
Year's and we just want everybody to come out and
celebrate the fact that we have this crazy off the
wall and we are only two official festivals in the
entire country, US and the original, So this is your
(30:51):
chance to catch something completely off the wall, have great fun,
and it kicks off the l dub Independent Film Festival
at the Lakeworth Playhouse, so you can learn more about
that when you show up. But just have some great
fun for little cost. And that is Swedefestpalmbeach dot org
(31:12):
and you can get your tickets at Lakeworth Playhouse dot org.
It's Friday, March twenty eighth. Red carpet arrival at six
pm and showtime at seven, so.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
Definitely make sure you're there. What a good night. That's
gonna be a lot of fun. So thanks Elizabeth for
coming in for sharing all the information with us about
all the fun things, and of course about Swedfest and
the Palmbach Film Society.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
Always a pleasure.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
Thank you, and if you need more information reach out
to me Palm Beach Perspective at iHeartMedia dot com and
I'm happy to forward on the details. And don't forget
