Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, I'm Sylvia Moss. This is Insight, a presentation of iHeartMedia,
where we really do care about our local communities and
all our listeners who live here. You know, there are
so many truly wonderful people who continue to improve and
change the lives of all of us right here in
Central PA. One of my favorites is a woman who,
since I first met her over a decade ago, has
(00:20):
become not only a dear friend, but more like a
sister to me. And that's because of all the generosity
inspiration that she continues to leave with anyone who's fortunate
enough to meet her. A little over twelve years ago,
military veteran Tanyasirogji, along with her sister Abir Allan, who
at that time had a very lucrative corporate job, gave
up everything. I'm saying everything because they wanted to give
(00:43):
back to their local communities. So they started a business
known as Events by Eye Candy, with their focus being
to inspire, motivate, and empower others through their fun and
exciting events while at the same time raising over two
hundred thousand over the last few years. Well, guess what,
that lady that I love so much she's with us
(01:06):
today and she has an event coming up that, honest
to goodness, just says. So it's one of the favorite things.
Even family thinks. It's one of the favorite things I
look forward to each I'd like you to welcome my
buddy Tanya Saroji.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Hi, Hi Sylvia, thank you for having me. I'm serious,
what an introduction?
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Oh, well, you know me, I'm I always spill my
guts or pour my heart out. That's more of a
better way to say it. And I think there's nobody
like you and your sister. Okay, well tell me. I
want to get everything in. So let's tell everybody what
is going on at the Pan Harris on October thirtieth.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
So this is the twelfth year for the Conference for
Women Be Extraordinary, and this year's conference is going to
be stellar. The theme this year is a seat at
the Table, celebrating belonging, authenticity, and making your voice heard.
Whether it's in business, whether it's in your home, in
your church, all these women deserve a seat at the table.
(02:06):
And we have a seat at the table. And we're
just really excited to have a wonderful day with some
really dynamic speakers.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
And you're gonna have to get it seems like I
cannot believe how it's growing. You have get more seats
every year.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Every year, every Thank god, it's growing, it's getting bigger.
It just shows the need of women who want to
grow and learn in our community.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Well, you know, I know that the thing that you
are always you're known for, it's kind of your mindt
it's that you think we should live our lives by design,
not default.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Well, absolutely absolutely. We're responsible for our own lives and
not be victims of what our circumstances may be. So,
whether it's a financial circumstance or a work thing or
whatever it may be, really looking at our lives in
a way where we design and responsible for the things
that happen to us and the actions we take. So,
for example, as a woman, I'm not happy where my
(02:55):
at my job or at my work. What can I
do to improve my self and not play victim, but
but be surrounded by wonderful people, go to conferences and
learn those types of things. So living your life by
design as you're designing your life.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
And I walk away every year feeling that, well that's wonderful,
it's encouraging, and you wouldn't be getting more and more
women every year if it wasn't working for them either.
Now you mentioned your theme is a seat at the table?
How do you decide on the themes every year? Oh?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
So, we have an amazing advisory board and a lot
of times we're looking at like what's going on in
the community, in our area and in our world. And
as a woman, one of the things I always hear
is we can't get that seat at the table, or.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
I mean as competing with it.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
As it could be with other women or other men
or whoever it may be. But it's not always just business.
Also family. Where do I fit in my family? I'm
a wife, I'm a mother, and I'm last on the
list of importance of things to do. But the reality
is is you are You are the but you are
the one who can put that seat at the table
(04:02):
and say to your family, I am a priority. And
because I'm a party and we take care of my health,
I'm going to take care of my mind. I'm going
to take care of all my body and all these
things and take care of you. Show you love and
pour into you, pour into yourself, you pour into others.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
You know, it's funny you should say that because I
just had a conversation with my son Josh a couple
of weeks ago, and I thought, I have to do this,
I have to do that. He goes, Mom, I don't
you know, it's funny. He said. All I want for
you to be is healthy and happy, and that's what
I want for But I think we blow it up
(04:35):
in our heads. Absolutely, And there's the competition, and there
are a lot of wonderful men out there who are encouraging.
But in general, I think what I found out that
it's still a good old boys.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yeah, sometimes it doesn't Even if it is, it doesn't
have to let it bother you. You are responsible for where
you are in your mindset, because a mindset is a
really important thing. And you know this conference, one of
the main things that we always think about is how
do we surround ourselves with like minded people, yes, who
want to grow. And even though you know, bad things
(05:08):
happen to good people, still say, oh, there's other women
in our community and other women in business who think
like me, who want to get imprived like me.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You'll be surpressed. And you know, I hope you don't
mind me talking about this but I mean you and
your sister do this several events of the year, all
because you want to take care of the community, right absolutely,
and you have things going on in your life, of course,
and you volunteer all the time. Honest, got you come in,
I talked you about stuff, and I'm thinking, how the
(05:39):
heck do you get this done? And you're like twenty
years younger than me. Don't tell anybody how old are anyway,
and you a lot of times, like even when they
talk about families, Oh they've got a great family. Well,
you know what, people don't know what's going what other
people are going through. Absolutely, absolutely you know, and it
is it's up to It takes a lot of self talk.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yes, it's a lot of self talk, and it's you know,
if you if you really and I struggle with this sometimes,
like a lot of times, and if I really do
think about living my life by design, it's Okay, this
bad thing happened, or this negative thing happened, or why
feeling so overwhelmed? But what am I gonna do the
next day to get that stink and thinking out of
(06:21):
my head?
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
So we just have to be more responsible for the
way our mindset.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Is and you will meet a lot of women out
there will probably tell you the same story at this
conference and then talk to mathterwards and it's like, somebody
give them a shot.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Well, well, here's the thing. I've always been so proud
and impressed by the caliber of the ladies that attend
this event. Not just ladies, ladies and men that attend
this vat I'm always just so blown away with the
caliber and the one thing I find out and the
you know, like I said, this will be our twelfth
year of doing this in the past eleven years, that
(06:58):
they have the same problems I did. They struggle with
the same stuff I do. You know, it may may
not be out there in the open, but like they do.
And so when you hear a lot of these different
dynamic speakers throughout the years, you realize they weren't always successful,
they weren't always on the top of their games. All
these things in life happened yon for a for a reason.
(07:20):
And so really excited to always have the opportunity for people.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
To well, let's go through the day. Oh that's gonna okay,
It's Thursday, October thirty at seven thirty in the morning.
Is registration till three thirty in the afternoons at the
Penn Harrison Camphill. You get there and you register at
seven thirty, right, yea. Then what happens.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
So obviously we've got breakfast open. There's a lot of
so we have a lot of wonderful vendors at the event.
So there's a couple of different times for you to
shop and support those vendors. We have something called the
Health and Wellness Room. This is like one of my
favorite parts. It's opened the entire day of the conference. Okay,
so this year the Health and Wellness Room. It's actually
(08:01):
sponsored by this really great business called Happy Soul Massage,
and they are doing things like biomat massage and some
other really fabulous things for women to feel just rejuvenated
and renewed. We have reiki, we have blood pressure screenings
(08:21):
by UPMC. We have all these really wonderful things. That's
that's one part of it. Then the day starts and
so there are three speakers that go on at the
same time, all in different topics.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Let me yes, if you don't mind me, you know
you for a second, do you know how many people
I have told that my life was saved there. I
told this before when you were on maybe once or twice,
but I think it's important to know that there were
nurses there that were doing.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
At the time glucose screenings and blood pressure.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
I have no idea the one nurse and I know
these girls. She took my sugar, as we say, and
she looked at the other lady. She said, this is
not right. It's got to be that, you know. She
took it and they looked at each other and they said, Sylvie,
your sugar's seven hundred. And I said, well, what does
that mean? And she said, you're not going anywhere. We
are taking you to the hospital. Well, I convinced her.
(09:12):
I was going to go at the backman in the afternoon.
But seven hundred, I mean I could have stroke, absolutely,
and there was a reason for me being there. We
actually a lot of reasons. But if I wouldn't have
been there, i'd have gone and I would have never known.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Well, I'm really grateful that they did find that for you.
And that's why that health and wellness room has always
been so important. Oh yeah, because again, women were the
last to take care of ourselves. It's also like a
little bit of pampering, but it's I'm glad you're around,
and your speakers are really and your your entire Central
(09:46):
Pennsylvania is happy that you're still around and kicking.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Well, you know what, I didn't mean to interrupt yours
so much, and I thought, wow, okay, you're registered. Then
you've got these sis.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
You have the session, so three speakers go on at
the same time. You get to pick what speaker you
go to, right, So in the morning, there's the first session,
then a break so you can to shop around and
see all the great vendors that we have, and then
the second session starts, same thing. Lots of wonderful speakers
(10:18):
this year that we're really really excited about. And then
it's almost time for lunch. And lunch what makes it
so important it's we do an awards ceremony at lunch
time to recognize the dynamic leaders we have in our
community and so well, one of the first things we
(10:39):
do is we have a grand sponsorship, so we try
to give a grant to a nonprofit. This year, we're
fortunate enough to have two grand sponsorships, so we're going
to be giving away two thousand dollars, so one thousand
dollars to each of the nonprofits, which we absolutely love doing.
And then at lunch time the finalists were actually just
announced today who the finalists are for the for the
(11:04):
awards ceremony, And you're not going to tell me. I
wish I could, I wish I can.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
I actually don't even know.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
No, I actually don't even know the winners yet. We
know who the finalists are. We will get like we
will get who the winners are, probably by the end
of next week. Who decides our advisory boards?
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Okay, okay, yeah, so nobody can come up to you
and your sister say why don't you pick me?
Speaker 2 (11:25):
No, no, we don't And honestly, it's not fair that
we would even be any part of it. The only
thing I do is read what the nominees put in
because I always want to learn about the women in
on my community.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Well, let me ask you this. Let's give someone I have.
In fact, I deliberately put a list together of some
of the things that the causes and the nonprofits that
you have given money through over the years. I think
it's wonderful if you don't mind. Okay, okay, this is
just our last several years since you started. Okay meals
to the hungry. They gave over nineteen thousand mouths were fit,
(11:58):
plus an additional four thousand fresh food meals were distributed
all over Central Pennsylvania. Seventy two I got to ask
you this one seventy two worth a thousand worth of
life saving medical supplies distributed twenty eight hundred toward breast
cancer patients paying for their medical bills. This is one
of my favorites because this means so much to me.
(12:19):
You provided fifty EKGs to local students through the Peyton
Walker Foundation to prevent kids from going into Southern cardiacorists
because it's the number one killer of student athletes. Money
to Children's Resource Center, Downtown Daily Bread, Big Brothers and
Sister Project Share Peace promised. They were just there. A
(12:39):
couple of Patty was there, the Yahud couple, And that's huge.
People don't want to believe it, but there's a lot
of sexual abuse and sexual.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Trust trafficking right in our area.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yeah, exactly. Last year you had two winners, Operation Restore
Hope and Central pank College Education Foundation. Now you were
saying I'm sorry for a rupt now.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Okay, No, I was just saying, we're very proud to
be able to dominate to these nonprofits. One of the
things that is very important to bear and eye and
as an event business is there are a lot of
people doing a lot of good in our area. Yes,
and so if we have an opportunity to highlight them
or give them a little bit of money that can
make a big difference to them. We're going to do
(13:22):
our best as a company to do that.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
I'm amazed at this whole thing. Look how many things
it does. It It helped supports women, gives us our
tools in our professional and private lives, and all the
money and give to the charities. I mean, it's wonderful.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
One you have to remember it's not in a beer
and I thing like, It's not just her and I
doing this stuff.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
It was your idea.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Well, our thing is we live in this community. This
is a community that we grew up in and as
business owners, we feel like it's our job to help
the community grow to get better. This is where we
want to raise our kids, this is where we want
to grow right. So we want to make sure that
there are people who are being heard. So we try
(14:07):
to use our events to give them that opportunity. And
we love finding out about nonprofits who are not like
so big and so out there, but the ones that
could really use is that like a little bit of
money can do the most good. And every day I'm
finding out about something new or somebody new, which is
always exciting.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Well, we're at the luncheon. What are you serving this year? Kid?
Speaker 2 (14:31):
You know, I do know, I don't announce it. Yeah no,
but yeah, the Raison has great food. They have a
new chef and lots of great stuff. They've renovated the
whole place. The Penn Harris are not the Rais and
the Pen Harris, but they we've been working with them
for years. It's just it's just a really great location.
So whether you live in Harrisburg or you live in York,
(14:53):
or you live in Mechanicsburg, it's a central location. And
the day, like I said, is filled with wonderful speakers.
At lunchtime, Well.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Tell us about your feature speaker at the lunch.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
And sure so, our keynote speaker is Betsy Ham. So
she is the former CEO of Duck Donuts. She's talking
about leading loudly, owning your seat as a woman in leadership.
So she has gone and done tons of different things
to get to where she was as a CEO of
Duck Donuts and the steps that she has taken and
(15:24):
the challenges that she's had, and it's a journey, absolutely, absolutely.
So we have different types of speakers. So we have
some speakers who are talking about health and wellness. We
have Patti Sabak and Kathy Anderson martin investing in your
health Yes. And then we also have s This is
we have a married couple this year because one of
(15:48):
the things we hear about other than business is your
personal life right, and a lot of people struggle with
managing marriage and work balance, like that's a very tough
thing for them. So we have a wonderful couple talking
about the seven the Thrilling marriage seven secrets to success.
(16:08):
They are really really wonderful people and I think it's
going to be a really great session to hear tons
of different things to include we have Nina Reese who
is an interior designer designing lives, leaderships and spaces rooted
in values. She has such a wonderful eye for all things.
(16:30):
She's a great person, like I said, very fashionable. Really
it has the pulse of what's in always Currently also
working with Christina drew with how to work with your mind,
not against it paget ray rewiring. And this is a
really important one for me because I'm at that age group.
(16:51):
How stress, gut health and mindset shape the woman behind
the all. So that's a really great one, deb Ellenberg,
we have the courage to ask how speaking up transforms everything?
Speaker 1 (17:02):
You know. That's funny you should say this because the
younger generation I was talking to, I forget her if
it was, I don't know who it was, but I
remember this conversation and the girl, one girl said to
the other she was going for a job interview. She said,
did you ask for the job? And I'm thinking, what
does this ask for? What does that mean? And when
I saw this, I thought, I gotta find out more
(17:23):
about this. Yeah, we don't. We don't ask for what
we do. Yes.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
And the wonderful thing about deb Ellenberg is again great person.
She's not a bully when you're saying let's do the ask.
It's the way she says things and the way she
does things. It's women are really going to benefit from
hearing her.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
That's great.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Yes, we also have beca sparr talking about the likable leader,
inspiring high performing teams without sacrificing authority because everybody wants
to be your friend.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
That's exactly what that's going to be interesting.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
That's going to be very interesting because as a woman,
I am so guilt of this and I want to
be everybody's buddy and I forget that I need to
be a leader something so really excited for her.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Even helps at home. Why yes, because.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Exactly we have Pam Gockley unmuted, naming the wound, reclaiming
the power. So we're all wounded in some way for
some things, right, and it's she talks about really thinking
about like recognizing and and and reclaiming that power. And
then finally we have Jillian Bill Morrison talking about edifying
(18:34):
in the works place how to lead with confidence. So
that's a lot of women I hear who look confident
aren't really confident.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
And this is all from listening in the community. Talking
another way, I think it's great because I remember you
the one year you had Elder Patrick. Yes you know
law Yes, I mean Ai Yeah, And this is all
the stuff we're going to use or do use. Well.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
We we do surveys and find out what women want
to learn about and some years it's more tech focused
or whatever it may be. In the other years, it's
more about you know, mindfulness, and we just want to
make sure that women leave the leave our conference with
tips and tools that they can use in their real
life feeling integrated and inspired and and want to go
(19:18):
out there and.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Like ready to go exactly tell thelis about the awards.
That is so awesome.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
So the awards is like one of my favorite favorite things.
So we have some awards that we give away. We
have good Will Ambassador, we have Care to Share, we
have Lifetime Achievement, we have Agate Award. And the thing
about these awards is that they you know, the community
(19:50):
people are nominating people for these awards. Okay, but the
great part about it is that it is always surprising
to me how people who even get nominated for these
awards write us back and say, I just can't believe
I got nominated for this. Oh I don't hardly do anything,
like I'm just doing my job, and we're like, we've
(20:12):
read the nomination. You are so deserving of being a
finalist for the like even for winning the award for
a lot of these people, So it's really just important
for us to go out there and showcase, and we
also have Business of the Year because there's a lot
of businesses who support our community and they deserve that
recognition of Business of the Year.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Big and small. But you know what I noticed on
the conference, there's a lot of women who started their
own business. Yeah, and a lot of them hadn't started
it prior to that. So you've given so many directions
and you mentioned it's for men and women.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Yes, of course, yeah, I mean tell us about the
idea so that I could award. We started that a
couple of years ago because one thing a Bier and
I kept hearing is the glass ceiling. Men don't support
women in business, and both her and I in our
previous corporate world careers had men bosses who supported us
and helped us grow as later. Now I know that's
(21:09):
not always the case, but there are so many wonderful
men out there that support women in business and want
to have these women grow into great leaders. And when
you feel supported like that, you're going to always grow.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
I call it, like when you have a like a
boyfriend or a husband, that's a green flag, you know,
you know that saying the green flag boyfriend, So like
someone who's extremely kind and thoughtful and whatever towards you.
They're always thinking about how they can do nice things
for you. That's a green flag. That's love, right, that's love.
That's a green friend love right. Red flag is the
bad boyfriend, the bad husband, that one, right, the bad leader,
(21:44):
the bad boss. But there are so many men out
there that support women in business, and we want to
showcase those men.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Well, after you give out all the awards and then
you go, then it's the other breakout session for the after.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Yeah, so that's the final breakout session. Now we are
going to be posting in a about a week. I
think I think it's actually on there now. If I'm
not mistaken, I have to apologize. I think it is
on there now. When you when you register to go
to the conference, you can pick who your speakers are.
So the sessions are broken down like in three parts,
and you can pick who you want to see at
that session, you know, and if the day of you
(22:17):
change your mind you want to see somebody else, you're
welcome to do that as well. But you know, we
tried to break them up in a way that that
you get a little bit of everything.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Tony, what about sponsors and more vendors. You have room.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
We have we always we always have room for more
sponsors than vendors vendors. We only have about five spots left.
We're always looking for, like right now, I would love
to have a boutique in there because women like to shop,
so that would be like a really great uh vendor.
We love anything that's like women related that women would
love to see. We have some great medspas this year.
(22:52):
We have photographers, We have all all kinds of cool things.
We could always grow and sponsorship. You know, one of
my favorite sponsorships that we actually have, and we have
this for a lot of our events is called the
Community Care sponsorship. So that sponsorship, there's two different levels.
That sponsorship provides tickets to you and then tickets to
(23:16):
fifteen community members you're in behalf of your company. And
another sponsorship twenty five community members come on behalf of
your company, so they're getting we're giving away twenty five
tickets or fifteen tickets to people in our community to
attend the conference. Because we hear this sometimes, Hey, I
can't afford to go to your conference. Is there any
(23:38):
free tickets? Well, this community sponsorship, which is just one
of the many sponsorship opportunities that we have. Just talks
about helping other women in the community attend, have access
to you know a lot of them. Sometimes I don't
have access to things.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
Well, and you know what else is very important, And
I don't think a lot of businesses out are people
their own business is a big business out there. They
don't realize what things like this, how it can improve there.
What's helped me out with the word, uh not just stattitude,
there's not self esteem. What's the word I'm looking for
for like for businesses or for marketing when businesses do
(24:13):
stuff like this for their employees.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Oh yeah, it's like it's like it really I'm looking
for you. Yeah, I mean you're giving you're giving your
employee this opportunity. First of all, like I said before,
I'm always impressed who attends the conference. So if I
was in my early twenties, which I wish I was,
but if I was to have access to some of
these CEOs and marketing directors and business owners of these
(24:36):
large communities in our area, I would have killed for
that opportunity. Right.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
Well, I'll tell you what then. The thing I've learned
in life about everything. It's all about relationship.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
It's all about relationships, you know. And this year we're
doing something a little bit different. We're going to be
videotaping some of the speakers, so you'll have the opportunity
to purchase that later if you want to some steps
if you can't make it the day of the event,
because we know sometimes these things happen. But you know,
we are always very grateful for the speakers and the
(25:07):
people who attend that take the day of their very
busy schedules to come to the Women's conference and just
get rejuvenated and learn, you know, just and common network.
I mean, it's a great networking opportunity anybody. Oh yeah,
there's a lot of who's who who attend, and we're
very blessed to have that.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
And they're all wonderful ladies. Thank you. Seriously, you're not
going to find because sometimes people women will think I
don't want to hang out with those snotty broads. They're
not at all, no.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
And and people are there to meet other people. That's
the one thing I really like. I grew up in
this community, so I feel like I know a lot
of people in this community. But I'm always impressed by
the people. I don't know that a time my conference
and I'm like, hey, how did you hear about us?
We have sometimes people coming in from Delaware, Virginia, Philadelphia. Yeah,
our demographic is really interesting. So we have Harrisburg, Lancaster, York. Uh,
(25:57):
you know, Catesburg, Lamoine. But we've had people from Delaware,
ten from Philadelphia.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
It's Maderland.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
They'll come just for the event, which is we're always
just very grateful.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Wow, I think that's great. Well, you know what, before
we run out of time, I do want to mention
I talked about a little bit about some of the
events you have dream there that it always benefits something
in the community. There's a super chef Yes.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
One of my favorite events. So if you're a foodi
out there, we're going to be doing it sometime in
May and we don't have the date yet, but that
event always uh showcases great restaurants that we have in
our area, as well as a nonprofit that we don'tate
the money to have it. Scrambled Scrambled is another one
of my favorite events. Unlike the regular Easter egg hunt,
(26:40):
this one has killer prizes. So the eggs that you
hunt for have candy and have tickets for kids. It's
for kids, yeah, I mean we do, we do have
we do have age group fourteen and up, so adults
have participated in that as well. Because some of the
prizes on our prize tables are electronic, we have all
(27:00):
kind led goos, like all kinds of really cool things.
So we spend the whole year shopping for that kind
of stuff and then at the event. Fine, it is fun.
It's a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (27:10):
Oh my gosh, it's awesome. Well, I'll tell you what.
Let's talk about this again. We haven't even mentioned where
you get tickets, Well, where you get information.
