Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the Ta Mahoney Company Wheel Animals Radio show,
presented by Contender Boats and Pro Marines now Here to
chart today's course. Your hosts Captain's Mike Anderson, Ben Marshall
and the legend Mike Mahoney.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
It's gotten kind of rare when the whole band is
in the studio first thing in the morning, isn't it,
mister Mahoney. Yeah, it seems that way. Yeah, I don't know.
That's I thought you kept up.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
With the Dylan or in the gym.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Probably, Oh, that's probably. They probably said let's meet before day.
That's full moon. You know, they probably couldn't even say
it's big too.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
It was incredible though. If you haven't seen the weather,
and if you weren't up early this morning in the
west sky, I guess it's full moon. I you know,
I didn't see the dates on it, but I don't
know how it'd get much fuller.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
I think the ninth is a few more days.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, you could read a newspaper. Yeah, five o'clock this
morning in my driveway, you're going to have southwest south
east wind excuse me, let me start over, southwest winds
kind of mild six to twelve miles an hour, and
as we drove across the new Howard Franklin Span this morning,
you can see the thunderstorms are offshore. They're pretty far out.
(01:25):
It's hard to measure, but out there where Mahoni likes
to go look for Wahoo. But they're coming this way.
Supposed to rain. We got a little rain. We're just
talking off the air. Got some storms that actually came
from the east last night and this morning they're supposed
to come from the west. Wind's not too bad. We're
in that we're starting to get into that exciting part
(01:47):
of the year, which is transitional, which is fall, spring
and fall or most of us favorite time to fish.
Because there's you know, a little bit of transition going on,
things should cool off. I drove home from Georgia last
week and my truck was covered with love bugs. So
for us old timers, that means change in season, usually
(02:12):
early and late, early and late. Your weather update was
brought to you this morning by Rene Windows and Doors.
Excuse me. They are Florida's leading window and door company
with over fifty years in the business. They offer free
installation and the most windows and doors are installed in
just six weeks. They only use home installers, no free
(02:32):
lance contractors, and their work comes with a double lifetime warranty,
which means you never pay for warranty and when you
sell your house to warranty transfers to the new owners,
which adds value to your home. Visit Reeswindows Anddoors dot
com for more info. I see more and more folks
putting on RUSS. My neighbors putting in the those who
(02:57):
have boarded up and been all depressed in their dark
house they're in the storms, are putting in these these
windows and Rees Windows and Doors are the great company
to go with.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
And they're giving away like twenty five thousand, aren't they.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I think that's what you were telling me this morning,
fifteen thousand.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Now I think it's twenty five.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
The prize has gotten bigger. Texts trust to to zero
one two nine to win up to twenty five thousand
dollars in new hurricane impact windows. So text trust to
two zero one two nine to win up to twenty
five thousand dollars a new hurricane impact wind. It be
something worth winning. Well here, it also adds value to
(03:41):
your house. But I was talking to the neighbors, they said,
I said it's quiet now, and I said, they said,
you can't hear anything it used to be. You know,
my windows were original with the house from the late
seventies and we put in the impact double pain windows,
and some of them are triple pain. But if I
(04:01):
hear a lawnmower, I don't know if it's my yard
or which side of the house it's on. You can
just barely hear it. It really and then it'll lower your
electricity bill. Also, difference does make a big difference. So
what happens to us now is we want to go fishing.
We've got a big tournament coming up. Are you fishing?
Do you have like a grudge thing going on? Or
(04:22):
you got to be injured, aren't you?
Speaker 5 (04:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
I mean the CCA. Yeah, it's September nineteenth and twentieth.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, I think somewhere right around there, the twenty of
twenty first, something like that. Just talk to the guy
who coordinates it and had a good conversation. But you
want to know, just a few years ago they were
struggling for people to get in the tournament. It was
just a bad time of year, and they've actually hit
their limit.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, I got a text or an email saying stop
or yeah, they're at their limit. Yeah, And I know
for a long time and when I'd win raffle items
at the tournament or the captain's meetings, they would they
would have t mahoney sticker on them.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah, we can help it well, and we're giving away
another move. You know last time. It wasn't last year
they had to cancel because of the hurricanes, but the
year before was me against Brian Watts. You know what
you find most of the time, these people that are
big time fishermen aren't really big time fishermen. So I
(05:28):
didn't win and he didn't win. There was some shenanis.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Theres going on, but you lost your rat tail.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Anyway, The key was we gave away a move and
we're going to do the same thing. It's going to
go in a raffle this year. You have to be
there to win it. So none of this going home
for a nap ben. So if you fish that day,
it's not oh, I'm going to go home. Tell me
if we want, because you're not going to win. If
(05:54):
you're not present, you're not getting the move.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I've already thought it through and if I fish downtown,
I can have time to send in the winning fish,
take the boat home, take a nap, and still get
down to Baywatch. I think I can still pull it. Sure,
it'll be a fun time over there at Baywatch. I
think they got one hundred and fifty people in it.
Middle of September. My favorite time to fish really is September.
(06:21):
I did a seminar over at Fens this weekend or
last week in Apollo Beach and went real, well, I
know you wouldn't know that because you don't ever support
the seminars, and of course you know, I go over
to Mike and Dylan's little play pretty thing at occ
which is coming up.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I think the twenty sixth they don't. But they don't
come to mine, you know what I mean. Like it's
kind of a one way street there with them two guys.
But even you, you know, no support, no after hours
bend's in bed. I used to be at all all
of those snap boys, just to set up. Mike was
(07:04):
telling me last week he had called me and asked
me over the weekend about one of the you know,
a part on his boat and getting it repaired. He
was down to Anna Maria with his family. Well, he
had pulled up to the house you were at and
everybody's in the pool or playing volleyball or whatever they
do in the pool. And there was a bunch of
people and he pulled up and where's Ben. Oh, Ben's
(07:28):
taking a nap. So even on your vacation, you're beautiful,
Anti Maria. You could be catching fish, you could be
in the pool, the life of the party, and Ben's
taking a nap. Ben drives his truck. I bet you
take one when you go home from here. Huh, just
wore out. That's a long drive from Odessa or wherever,
(07:50):
to Loots to a feather sound, feather Sound, the big
studio over here. And that's a big napboy, that's a
that what might happen. That's a big day. And you
know what really surprised me. You said you were going
to Georgia this week. Now, usually you do that on
the weekends. So you're going to be back in time
(08:11):
for Sunday or yeah, I'll be okay. As I know,
sometimes when you leave on Saturday, it's just so hard
on you for that six and a half hours driving
in that brand new truck. It is actually up on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
You're gonna take breaks.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
You're definitely not going to answer your phone. I like said,
he called you this week find out if you were
going to be here, But I was surprised you.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Answered, You're not that good on your end either, to
sound like, give us a call so you can give
some opinions. Back to mister mahoney, you reach us at
one eight eight one eight eight eight five four six
four six twenty. We'd like to hear from you this morning.
(08:52):
Fishing should be pretty much.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Awesome fire the water is.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Climbing down into temperature. What we also you mentioned, you know,
the Labor Day weekend being down to in Maria. This
is the time of year with a lot of folks
with kids are concentrating on, you know, the first couple
of weeks of school, getting everything ready, getting back in
that routine, and they're not on the water, which is
kind of nice. Fishing was pretty sporty. The trout fishing
(09:24):
has been better longer. It's going to be pretty interesting
in this tournament coming up for the CCA. What it's
going to take to win the trout category. Not saying
that there is a boat load of fish over twenty inches,
but they are out there and there is a boat
load of fish between fourteen and nineteen on the flats
(09:46):
right now, and the fry. The fry is everywhere.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
We haven't heard, you know, ever since we lost Richard Seward.
We just don't get reports like we used to on
the mangrove snapper up in the bay. But when you
see that fry, it's always July August when you you know,
and even he was one of the only fishermen out there.
Richard Seward, which the tournament is named after, the Cincinna Tournament.
(10:11):
He's one of the only ones to say it would
tell us I'm catching the males, the females haven't come
in yet, or vice versa. And he doing real good,
that's for sure. Definitely a legend in this area. He
was in one of his I think him and Vance
Tice were partners in Bubba jigs at one time, because
(10:33):
the original CCI a long time ago, but the original
CCA tournament, you would be issued a tackle box and
in that tackle box was Bubba jigtails and you got
about two jig heads and like a small spoon and
maybe a top water plug. It was one of those
little plastic you know, divider boxes like these the fancy pants.
(10:56):
Guys put four or five of them in a you know,
over a shoulder bag or in a backpack. You sell
that kind of stuff, you know, let's see fancy. Uh
do we ever figure out if Mike and Dylan share
a backpack?
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Yeah? I think it's a I saw that at ic
cast they walked together and share it. It has a
third arm. Oh, it's side by side. Bet it's a
big heavy one. I mean, if those two guys are
caring it, it's probably got well, it's probably got lunch
and dinner, right or pro it's got protein shakes. That's
(11:32):
what I'm pretty sure it's in there, and maybe some
elastic bands so they can get in a corner and
be scared.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
To look in there. Oh, I got a break coming up.
I was gonna go to Big pine Key, but uh,
after these fine words, we will come back and get
our report from Mike Perry. Captain Mike Perry down in
Big pine Key. Teamoney, Real Animals Radio here on Sunday morning,
ninety five point three. iHeart Studios. We'll be back after this.
(12:03):
Good morning, t Mahoney, Real Animals Radio back with you
on this Sunday morning. We are happy to be here.
Big full moon going down now as the sun comes up.

or check them out online at Butler Boyd dot com.
Mister Mahoney, just Mike is in the studio with me
this morning. We're talking about the loss in the Tampa
Bay area of Vance Tice. He and Richard Seward, also
(12:48):
of Legend Material owned Bubba Jaggs at one time and
then Advance owned Tightlines.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Tackle right here, tight Lines Tackle over or Farmenium and
he was definitely the master. I know it's grouper season
now and all that trolling in the bay.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Trolling Tampa Bay and the shipping channel, and seems to
me I went to back then. I actually went to
some seminars. I was younger and didn't take his men naps, Mike,
and that was the truth. The truck was smaller and
didn't have air conditioning, so I couldn't take it down anyway.
Seems to me like he even had these poor man's
(13:25):
down riggers he'd make out of coffee kens and leads
or something. He had something other than store bought down riggers.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Yeah, he was really show you. I mean he was
the master. I still remember many had to be over
twenty years ago, reading an article in one of these
local fishing magazines and it was about trolling the bay.
And I actually went by the store that morning, grabbed
(13:53):
the magazine. I'd never done it before, looked at the
number three plane or thirty foot curly tails, green pinks
and whites was his favorite four to six ounce head.
I did exactly what that magazine article said and called grouper.
I mean, that's how how tuned in he is. And
(14:17):
I can tell you there wasn't a lot of people
doing it back then, and I think that he really
showed a lot. And he he even got to the
point where I've talked to people that fished with him
and gone out there where they said, he said, yeah,
i'll go today, but we're not going to leave till
this time because we don't need to. They they're gonna hit.
(14:39):
I think it was slack tide.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Is where those I just I remember from one of
his statements was if you're not if you're not snagging
and bumping the rocks, you're not going to catch grouper
right that. You got to be right there in their face,
because I mean, when you think about it, a grouper
isn't a isn't a wahoo or a pelagi fish where
they chase their bait down, it's more of a reaction
bite when he comes by. So if you don't get
(15:03):
it close to him, you're not going to get that
reaction bite. I guess let's go to Mike Perry and
see what he has to say about that. Hey Mike,
good morning.
Speaker 6 (15:14):
Hey, good morning guys. Yeah, we've lost some We've lost
some legendary captains this year over the past year, Billy
and Vance and foot Palette passing away. I mean, time
changes and you guys come around. But let me tell
you Troll and Tampa Bay I did it and followed
(15:35):
his mantra of getting that bait down, slamming it off
the off the rocks. And if your baits weren't coming
up more beat up than when you put him down,
you weren't close enough.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
When we were fishing Mosquito Lagoon pretty heavy, uh. In
the Redfish tour. I had very close friends over there
that were just eight up. They were all Hell's Bays guys.
And then I had the maverick with the tunnel that
they couldn't follow me, and it was all shall anyway.
They they were just into it, had their own tournaments
(16:07):
and everything. But I went to one deal over there
where they hired Flip Pallette to come. They cooked barbecue,
a big cookout, and seems to me years ago it
was three hundred dollars or four hundred dollars, but they
got eight or ten guys there, and he stayed all
afternoon doing one on one with each of those guys
with their fly rods, yeah, and ty and tying, sitting
(16:30):
at a table and tie and flies. I think, maybe
even while having a beverage, as I recall, but eating
barbecue and talking fly fishing. He was.
Speaker 6 (16:39):
He was a great guy, a wonderful, wonderful I got
to meet him many times, and he talked to you
like you were his friend, like you knew him from
the day before, you know what I mean. So it's
just it's sad to see a lot of this knowledge
going away. But you know, the new guys step up.
(17:00):
We're all getting a little older. But the fishing and
the keys has been fantastic. I told Dylan yesterday, the
button snapper bite has been prolific. To say it any
other way is unbelievable. We've been catching plenty of buttons,
all all keepers ten twelve fifteen pounds.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
And that's a table fair fish.
Speaker 6 (17:23):
Oh, you ain't kidding, You ain't kidding. That is a
good eating snapper.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Boy.
Speaker 6 (17:27):
I'll take those over American red and just just above
a mango. So they're very good, very good. The yellow
tailing has been good. The pelagics they're hit or miss.
We're getting some wahoo, mike, we're getting arma, still getting
some mahi black fin tuna. Waiting for the billfish. Run
(17:50):
here in a few months when that water seems to
cool off and get a little bit of a chop
on it, it seems to be better for the billfish.
So we're fishing them up. Looking forward to making the
trip in a couple of weeks to fish the tournament,
looking forward to it. Loves supporting the county where I
grew up, one of the counties that I grew up
(18:11):
in and started fishing in and got my team put together,
got my buddy Rick Gross, and got my other buddy,
Donald Waverman, and we're going to see what we can do.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
I have not been told who I'm fishing with yet,
and Mahoney won't commit to what kind of shenanigans he's
going to be up to this year. But it is
sold out. I don't know if they sent everybody that
I think I got.
Speaker 7 (18:36):
They did. Yeah, I got what.
Speaker 6 (18:38):
I got an email that said it was sold out.
It went from where two years ago. You guys are
pushing to get people not only signed up for CTIA,
but come out to the tournament, have a good time
and fishing it. Now it's selling out. It sold out
last year except for the hurricane it stopped that.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
So yeah, your entry fee gives you a year's membership.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
CCA and Tide magazine, which I read that Tide magazine
almost from cover to cover. It's interesting, what's happening all
along the US coast coastlines?
Speaker 6 (19:16):
Yeah, it does. It gives you information from north south
and all the way around the Gulf.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
To Oregon, all the way to Oregon.
Speaker 6 (19:23):
Yeah, yeah, it'll do. Yeah, all the way out West.
It'll do the West coast too, So lots of good
information in that magazine. But no, I'm looking forward to
getting up there. And we're fishing the artificial bait division
and I know they added a live bate division and
I think that had them adding that just got more
(19:44):
eyes and people to come on into it.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
So I've been eyeballing my little freshwater boat under the
cover in the backyard of thinking about one thing about
when deer sty'son starts creeping up on it, so does.
I've got to get the crappie rods out, the croppy rigs.
Speaker 6 (19:59):
Yeah, uh yeah, you and you and your buddy, our
buddy down there and bridge and I'm sure he's itching
to get the crappie crappie rod. He's taken me several
times now, and that type of fit that's just so
much fun. I mean when they hit them big long
poles on that small jig, it just it feels, you know,
(20:20):
it feels almost like your mango fishing.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Well, he's turned that around for me. And I mean
I spent you know, since my childhood fishing for specs
all the way from starting with grass shrimp and Missouri
minez under a float to now beating the lily pads
just as thick as we can get it in two
foot of water. And you just wouldn't think you could,
You know, you could push a trolling motor and a
boat up and then catch a fish right next to
(20:45):
you in the lily pads.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
But it works.
Speaker 5 (20:47):
Oh, I know.
Speaker 6 (20:47):
It's a it's a ball. It's it's combat fishing kind
of when you're up in there. And he had he
had us in some spots that I never would have
thought to go in and fish.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
But uh, well, I have to watch him because I'm
a little anal about the cleanliness of my little rig.
And he's got a whole bag of goo when they
won't bite, he's got these bottles of it's just snot,
it's croppie snot and drips it all over the boat
and then he'll outfish me five to one with his
(21:22):
croppie snot. But he's really mad with him. I mean you,
I think the last trip we were on, Lightning was
splitting trees in half on the bank next to us,
and he finally agreed we might should stop fishing.
Speaker 6 (21:40):
Yeah, he gets mad at him. But now the fishing
and the keys has been great guys and looking, like
I said, looking forward to making the chip up and
having a good time with y'all. And one more thing,
you know, I was, I've had the power pole, and
I've got the second version now on the boat. And
I went out scalloping with Rick and I looked up
(22:01):
in front of his boat and he has one now,
and I'm like, well, what am I gonna do if
my tag gets drawn for a powerpole move? I guess
I guess Donald's the next guy. I couldn't imagine a
kayak was a powerpole move on it.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
Yeah, that'd be a good one. You definitely wouldn't have
to paddle, would you.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
Now he's got Donald's got that kind of kayak with
that drop in you know type motor in it, with
that battery motor inboard kind of type of motor. But
I'm sure he'd find a way through you, Mike, to
end up hooking up a powerpole move onto his kayak
and cutting awake.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
It'd be pretty neat to see. For sure. Donald's out
there all the time in that kayak and he definitely
puts a hurting on them fish.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
Oh, he sent me pictures yesterday. I guess he had
his outing, and you should have seen the redfish in
the trap that he had. He sent me the pictures
and the trout wasn't super long, maybe sixteen inches, but
it was as fat as it was as fat as
the red fish he caught. This trout had been feeding
(23:11):
for a long time. It was a big trout. All
but anyway, I'll let you guys go. Thank you for
the time. Everybody jumping your car and heads the keys
because the weather will be cool enough soon.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
All right.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Everybody's looking forward to that. Thanks to the call Mike.
As always, I've got another caller there. We're going to
get a report from Crystal River, but first we're gonna
have a few messages and take a quick break to
you Mahony, Real Animals Radio ninety five point three WDE
and six twenty am. We'll be back after this. We
(23:48):
are back Cavin Ben Marshall in the studio this morning
with the legend Mike Mahoney or just Mike that some
people might say, you know the water, you watch the weather,
you watch the tides, but what about your insurance. If
Briar Greaves Insurance in Tampa, they specialize in protecting what
(24:10):
matters most like your boat, your dock and everything that
floats in between. They get a unique set of risks
of Florida boating and build policies that actually make sense.
Call Briar Greaves Agency at eight one three eight seven
six four one six six or visit Briargreavesinsurance dot com
(24:33):
and make sure you're covered before the next cast.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Yeah, they cover Mahoney's.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Too, for they're not new. They have been around and
we are happy to have them as part of our
little team here. I'm having a little trouble with me.
I wanted to go to Captain William and Crystal River
get a report.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
This morning.
Speaker 8 (24:57):
Hey, gentlemen, we lost a good one. I had the
pleasure of fishing with Advanced twice. He sold a buddy of
mine a down rigger, and how we darned if he
didn't offer to go on our boat and take us
fishing skyway Bridge and trolling we caught. He felt we
didn't have good enough days, so he want to do
(25:18):
it twice. We went twice with the man and showed
us how to really do do it his way, and
he surely knew his stuff. By the wayside, you guys
have a great one.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
And he was the master by the way, that that
was his deal.
Speaker 8 (25:34):
So yeah, he'd headed down to a science that everything
that Mike said that that's what he had set up
one of them his rig and then the down rigger
really certainly worked. And then people should be trolling for
Trooper more often following his steps. Thanks for being there, guys,
have a good one and thanks Wave.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Thanks for the call this morning, short and sweet. We'd
like to hear from you this morning. He can give
us all it won eight eight eight five four six
four six twenty. I did see a report this morning,
was up pretty early watching the news. The next storm
rolling off of Africa towards the Caribbean and has zero
(26:17):
chances of development. Yeah, I saw that this morning. First thing,
you know, yesterday it was showing orange from red, so
it dropped down some. And then this morning I saw
the same thing. You dido zero. That's good, which is
real nice. You could use a year off, you know,
(26:38):
of hitting it really anywhere in Florida. Well, and as
you come, and I was down at Anna Marim so
was Mike for the Labor Day weekend. And you know,
it's just amazing the number of contractors that are still
working to put together people's homes and lives. And now
some of those contractors are working where folks came in
(26:59):
and mode down a million dollar home to build a
much bigger home. Yeah, lot of that going on. I
can tell you this. We were talking about insurance. You
definitely need to give Briar Greaves a call. We had
insurance to another company. We use him through our business,
but we got a place down an Anamary and you
(27:20):
want to talk about a joke with insurance. I wish
I could say their name on the line. They always
want their money tons of damage and then don't want
to cover any of the damage. It's everything they can
do to dip and dodge and get out of it.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Dipping dodge. Is that almost like flim flam? Yeah, the
same thing, same thing as flimflam yep. One thing that's
you dippin dodges.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
You.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
I'm more of a dipping dodger than call you back
two days later. Yeah, like you're super busy. Oh you
were nappy. Uh give us a call this morning. We'd
love to hear from you. I say, we maybe we'll
get a report from Dylan this morning. I didn't. I
didn't catch the sho Mike's not here, Dylan's not calling.
(28:10):
He ain't worried about that.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
He doesn't go to other people's seminars, doesn't call him.
And Mike he's a little many me. That's what he is.
I'm gonna start calling him many me. Mike's a little
many me.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
You know he's not very many though.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
But yeah, you're right September. I was telling you earlier,
and I know we both like that month of September
you start to feel the change. But these rivers, and
I said this the other night at Finn's Fishing Club.
I promise you, little man Tee Alifi, Palm River, Hillsboro River,
the ones I want to target when you hear those
(28:47):
shad and those rivers flipping the snooker there, fish on
the bottom, heavy tackle, any kind of structure, bridges work great.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
You know, a very good customer of the store, and
we've talked about some of his offshore number of books
to Paul Combast was.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Still is.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
We just haven't been around with a close friend. And
he really was a witch when it came to some
kind of fishing, and come along about September. He'd loved
to go to the Little Manatee River on an income
and tide and a couple. There's one or two of
those pilons on the forty one bridge that have a
deep wash or hole under him, and he knew which.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Ones well, even that trustle right there.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
The trustle, both of them. Otherwise it's not very deep there,
and then just shrimp under a float and you'd freeline
it past those pylons.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Well, and I'll tell you one of the spots because
I was with Captain Bretton Norris and we were over
there doing some film and years ago, and it's probably
about the third or fourth slot. When I say slot,
it's the poles in the water south side of the
trust four or five out. It's a real deep hole there,
(30:04):
and we hooked a monster. I thought we were going
to get him. He came out kind of did a dance.
We thought we had him well enough away from that trustle,
but he ended up getting in there.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Yeah, but it's very interesting fishing, and right now is
the time to do it. They'll stage they kind of
stage there depending on the weather and the length of day,
almost still November, and then they'll start easing their way.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
On and like you said, depend they know it's coming, right,
they've already spawned their out on their beaches or islands
or whatever it is in Tampa Bay that they go to.
I know, they don't travel all the way to Penelas
to spawn, so they're out there on those islands on
the outer shorelines where everybody's fishing.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Them, you know, Bird Island yep.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
But they really concentrate when those shads start to come
up in the rivers in September, and then like you said,
the cold it gets, the longer it gets October November,
they start to move up. And we've been in the
Alifi and actually caught snook way up there.
Speaker 5 (31:09):
You know.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
Well well, and my buddy up in Georgia would take
care of his place. He passed away, Barry Johnson. He
used to take us to let Us Lake and the
Peace River and they snook would go way up yep,
fishing freshwater shiners. Let's go to Gary and Inglewood see
if we can get a report this morning.
Speaker 9 (31:30):
Good morning, what's.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Happening to Gary man?
Speaker 9 (31:33):
Is this a good time.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Of the year.
Speaker 10 (31:35):
I mean football has started. We got great fishing. It's
just difficult on a Saturday or Sunday.
Speaker 9 (31:43):
What am I gonna do?
Speaker 10 (31:44):
Am I gonna go out fish in the morning to
try and get back and minus wait for the favorite
game go out in the evening.
Speaker 9 (31:51):
But it's been good, it's been good.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
Yeah, I agree with you there. For me, it's less
people on the water during the football seat.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
Oh, we noticed the distance of the reference to the
boat ramp immediately, especially when the college balls started.
Speaker 9 (32:05):
Yeah, now that it's fantastic time. I'm I.
Speaker 10 (32:08):
I've been shooting down to Boca Grand from my place.
It's about twenty five minutes by boat to get there,
So I've been fishing just south of Boat a Grand
and those grass flats I think that's what's that Kao
Costa Island or something.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
Oh yeah, beautiful place.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (32:24):
Oh, the grass flats are just gorgeous. And that fresh
water coming in like that, you know, off the bay
or the golf and uh we've been uh, I'm then
going down. I went three times down last week and
we've been redfish, snook and nice ize trout.
Speaker 9 (32:42):
I'm throwing artificial.
Speaker 10 (32:43):
My buddy's been throwing live dait whatever he'd get with
the cast net. He's been plenty of bait out too.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
Yeah, what kind of artificial are you throwing?
Speaker 9 (32:52):
I I my go to artificial.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
I like to have.
Speaker 10 (32:57):
I love throwing the super spook the top water, but
I love throwing like a red steel head. We used
to call them Cody jigs, but I don't. They're not
even in business anymore. But they need the salt water assassin.
And my favorite tale it's called buck Naked and it's
(33:19):
pink and then it's half of its pink and the
other half of it is clear like sparkles in it.
Speaker 9 (33:25):
I also call it the disco lure.
Speaker 10 (33:27):
But when that water, in that water, when the sun
gets about ten o'clock in the morning, nine thirty, and
that sun's coming down and hitting it, it sparkles, and
those trout they can't they can't they see it.
Speaker 9 (33:40):
They got to hit it, They got to hit Yeah.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
I love it.
Speaker 10 (33:43):
Nothing for me to catch thirty trout, thirty trout in.
Speaker 7 (33:46):
A good day.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
Yeah, this time is the best, that's my opinion.
Speaker 10 (33:50):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's uh this well, you know spring
fish and fall fish. I mean it's fantastic for bayfishing,
and then hopefully the next two or three months be
real good.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
I love catching those trout and artificial. I keep a
de gorger in my pocket, so I never touch them.
Those fourteen inches they come to the boat, I never
touch them. I just flip them right off.
Speaker 10 (34:15):
I've never tried that.
Speaker 9 (34:16):
I never tried that.
Speaker 10 (34:17):
I I usually you know that with that, with that date,
they don't normally swallow it. I usually catch them in
the lift.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (34:27):
I mean I've had a few deep but not not
not very many. They're almost off that. I'm retrieving pretty
fast too, so uh but you know that new.
Speaker 9 (34:35):
Boat shooting down there.
Speaker 10 (34:37):
Man, I'm getting four miles a gallon at about twenty
eight mile an hour.
Speaker 9 (34:40):
So that's not bad.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
That's nice. That helps you definitely.
Speaker 10 (34:45):
Yeah, that's Suzuki and uh it it goes really well.
I mean if the water's not too bad, you know,
he can shoot over. I mean I've had to come
back through the pass or not the pass, but Piner Coastal,
and they got that one spot. They call it the
Miserable micause got an idol all the way. But yeah,
well it's not too bad.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
I thought you could run if you were outside the markers.
Speaker 9 (35:10):
I remember we talked about that one day.
Speaker 10 (35:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:12):
I tried that too. They for you know, they frown,
frown frown.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
Are you talking about ky get a q on?
Speaker 9 (35:21):
Yeah, I don't know what the area is.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Yeah, one of those areas in the inner coastal Kpas
and it's miserable. All right, Gary, thanks for the call,
great call, buddy.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
All right, all right, good luck to you, buddy.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
If we got time, we're going to go with Alan
and Saint Petey.
Speaker 7 (35:42):
Good morning boys.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
What's happening?
Speaker 7 (35:45):
Well, you know, i'm a little checked off this morning.
It's not y'all's fault, but uh, you know, last year
I entered that Richard Sewer Mail tournament and we got
all excited. It was gonna be my first tournament, the
family out there with me, and of course it you know,
the Hurricanes put a put a damper on all that.
So I was excited about doing it this year and
(36:07):
never heard a word about it. Can't find anything on
the internet, nothing on this. Did you enter Secret Club?
Speaker 3 (36:13):
Alan?
Speaker 7 (36:13):
Did you last year?
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Well, you entered last year, then you're and you didn't
ask for your money back, you're automatically in.
Speaker 7 (36:22):
Well that's the key. I did get my money back.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
Oh yeah, now alligator arms cheer boy, Yeah, I wanted
to get his twenty five dollars back or whatever it was.
Speaker 7 (36:32):
Well, you know, you never know when God's going to
take you, you won't want to leave anything on the table.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
Okay, so now we see we're all the anger ought
to be directed towards yourself.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
So it's not about donating the CCA and protecting the
fishery and environment. It's just about winning.
Speaker 7 (36:47):
Now. I'm a member of STAR and I got two
family members that are members of STAR and members of CCA.
So I put my money out there, you know, But
I was just wondering why you just don't. It's not
it's like there's nothing on. The last year was on
the website and there was plenty of information, and this
year it sold out and never heard a word about it.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Well it's talk about it.
Speaker 7 (37:10):
And I'm like, well, how'd I get left out?
Speaker 2 (37:12):
I did searches on and everything, and I end up
I ended up getting an email that said you didn't
take your money back last year, you're automatically in. And
then I didn't respond and they sent it back and
said we want to make because they want to fill
all the spots. They actually sent me back kind of
like Mahoney does when I don't call him or text
him right back. They's like, are you still there? Are
(37:33):
you going to be there or not? I was like
I planned to fish.
Speaker 7 (37:36):
So yeah, I would have. I've been dying too well.
I've been trying to get in that thing. It's like
I'm not part of the club. I guess I don't know.
I just couldn't couldn't even find any information. Nowt here
it sold out, I'm like.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
Well go And that was really from last year. Alan.
Speaker 7 (37:54):
I went all in, man. I went on and bought
tournament short shirts for the for my wife and son
and no, I went ahead and got some fish blood
on those, but.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
But didn't want to leave that money in the CCA.
So look what happened.
Speaker 7 (38:16):
Well, well, I guess I learned my lesson. But maybe
I'll get a maybe God will shine on me next
year and I'll get some sort of a word or
an email or something. Do you think as a member
of CCA and a member of Star, they let you
know about stuff?
Speaker 3 (38:28):
You know what? You know what the problem is? Alan,
and I call early also, and Nile Brooks is a
guy who runs it. He is you know, and all
of us go through stuff, but you know he has
gone through some stuff over the left couple of months
with family and that kind of thing is what's what's delayed.
But I starred on him immediately and has so many
(38:53):
events going on, like that Star Tournament, and that's why,
you know, they don't want to override that. The Star
Our Tournament is probably one of the best things they
got going with all the scholarships and boats and prizes
and all that kind of stuff, so they don't really
want to drown that out, so they kind of wait
to start promoting that next event.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
The other thing is their banquets are incredible. Yeah, I
mean the time that they put into the banquets and
the attendance of the banquets dwarfs. Yes, the tournament, yes,
got you.
Speaker 7 (39:26):
Well, you know, I got a couple of Gator tags
in my pocket. I'll find something that week.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
You're not going to return those, are you?
Speaker 7 (39:33):
If you don't well, you know, no, they only have
to return them if you don't use them. So I'm playing.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
Well, let me just give you a little bit of
hint on that. Remember the disclosure that we have here
that this is all entertainment, and you know, iHeart has
nothing to do with it. But all you got to
do is just fill those tags out even if you
don't get them, and that way you can keep the
tags where if you kill one that's out of season,
you're able to snap it. You just got to guess,
(39:59):
you know, ten and a half foot or something. But
it's not something I do. I just know what people do.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
You have friends? You heard from it?
Speaker 3 (40:08):
I heard from some some friends. Yeah, but don't don't
send those stages back. Where are you going on your
alligator hunt? I've seen some monsters being harvested. Let me
tell you something. Dave Marquette was in the store this
week and he had went to Tenor Rock. He said
he didn't realize how many big gators are in that place.
(40:32):
Just loaded. He was real successful with calling gaters in.
He had a couple of people on the boat that
kind of maybe was a disadvantage for him. They couldn't
cast that well. They were you know, I think he
told me they were divers or something that, you know,
which I've shot him with spear guns. I've driven by
them in you know, forty mile an hour and shoot
(40:54):
them with a spear gun also, which is pretty fun.
But spear gun, you know, it's a little bit different.
Out of the water than in the water. I don't
know if you know that or not, and you kind
of got to get used to it. So I would
suggest you know target practice before you go out on
a gator. But what what week you going on that Alan?
Speaker 7 (41:16):
I've got well, I missed the first week, but I got.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
The makeup or whatever.
Speaker 7 (41:23):
Yeah, I got the second from I think it's September eighth.
All I've got all the way through November.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
So and you're going to go there, well, remember this.
The more you wait, the harder it is, because when
it starts getting yeah, i'd get there soon.
Speaker 7 (41:38):
I'll probably I'll try to go this this week or next.
I've enlisted the help of mister Bill George, a good friend.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
So let me tell you something. The first time I
went there, I was on Bill George's boat, So you
talk about a heck of a boat. Absolutely, it was the
first time I'd ever seen that hummingbird sonar work that
he actually, oh, it's unbelievable. He looked at the machine.
He told me to look at it. You could see
the alligator, his tail and his four feet in his head.
(42:07):
And he looked at another buddy of mine, Gersafy Glenn,
and he said, Glenn, that alligator's eight feet that way.
Flip the line out there. Boom hooked him up. That
was un Bill. Bill George is probably one of the
best I've been around, for sure.
Speaker 7 (42:26):
Yeah, he definitely. Well, I got a run, boy, they
got some business, all.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Right, have fun. I was gonna see if we had called,
if we had time for our safe boating tip. But
Jim hanging there. We got it, and Donald and Loots
we got a full board. We'll go to Captain Jim
first as soon as we get back tim Ony Real
(42:49):
Animals Radio on Sunday morning, ninety five point three WDE
and six am. We'll be back after this. We are
back Captain mid Marshall in the studio this morning with
just Mike Mahoney. We want to hear from you this morning.
Give us a call one eight eight eight five four
(43:10):
six four six point twenty. We definitely want to go
to our guy. He's been hanging a lifetime.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
Jim ill asleep.
Speaker 11 (43:19):
Yeah, Jim, I took a nap. I took a nap.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
Sorry about that, Jim.
Speaker 11 (43:24):
No, it's all right, good show, appreciate it really. Yeah.
This morning, I'm going to talk a little bit about paddlers.
I want to remind paddlers that they are voters and
they must follow all the United States Coast Guard navigation rules.
You know, if you're in a paddle craft, you're just
slower and you don't have us to spend as much
(43:47):
money to get out there on the water. The number
of paddle craft accidents is a lot lower, of course,
than it is with boats. However they have percentage wise,
they have more drownings because they're not wearing life jackets
a lot of times. So we highly recommend that you
(44:10):
wear your life jacket in your in your paddle craft
or on your paddle craft. If you're not going to
wear it, you certainly got have got to have it
with you. A lot of paddlers will just bunge a
cord it to the front of their bow of their
paddle craft. Remember that it has to have a whistle
(44:32):
on it, or you've got to have one on your
body somewhere. We recommend putting a whistle up near the
top of your life jackets so that if you're in
the water, you can just turn your head slightly and
blow the whistle. You don't have to food around looking
for it. Always file a floatplan. It doesn't matter if
(44:54):
you're going out for fifteen minutes. File a floatplan. Let
somebody know where you're going and when you're coming back.
If you're new, or even if you've been voting for
a while, take up boating skills course. We have a
lot of good courses. Some of them are one day
courses and some of them longer. But you really will
feel more confident if you do that, and you'll pick
(45:15):
up a lot of good tips. You know, up until
I think about two years ago, you could paddle pretty
much anywhere. Nowadays, paddling in the Intracoastal Waterway is prohibited
unless you're crossing and or if there's no other way
(45:35):
to get to where you're going except using the Intercoastal Waterway.
But for goodness sake, stay out of the channel. These
boats can't see you a lot of times, and or
when they're coming back in, they're tired and they're not
paying as much attention as they should sometime, and they
(45:56):
are not going to run aground. They're going to hurt you.
Wear bright colors. If you don't have a bright colored paddle,
get some reflective tape and put it on there. There
have been some studies that show that the first thing
a power boat sees when he's cruising across the water
(46:18):
is a reflection of the paddle against the sun and water,
and or the clothes you've got on. So wear something bright.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
Hey, Jim, when you talked about maybe getting into a
safe boating course and some of them are one day,
how do people find out about when that course is?
Speaker 11 (46:37):
It's real easy. You can go and google the United
States Coast Guard Voting Safety Classes or just the United
States Coast Guard boat classes, and it will pop up
something that tells you to put your zip code in.
You put your zip code in, and you pick whether
(46:58):
twenty five miles or fifty miles or whatever, and it
will give you a listing of exactly which courses how
lonely are and how to get in touch goo good question,
good question.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
Yeah, you know one thing, Jim, you made me think about.
One thing about paddlers and life jackets. Is a good
part of the year, it's ninety degrees or above, and
most of us don't want to wrap ourselves in an
inch of nylon covered foam when it's ninety five degrees.
Speaker 3 (47:29):
So the.
Speaker 2 (47:31):
Suspenders or even the fanni pack. Auto inflators or manual
inflators are a good option as opposed to not wear
anything at all. And you made me think, You made
me think about don't just automatically go with the auto inflate,
because if you're not hitting your head and getting knocked out,
you might be better off if it doesn't inflate to
(47:53):
get yourself to shore, get yourself back in the boat.
But then after I did some investigation, now they got
a where they got to switch on them. You can
deactivate the auto inflate with just a switch that's right there,
and you can turn it on when you're in the water,
as opposed to having to pull that ripcord and inflate
that uh those suspenders. So uh, I did a little
(48:16):
research after you made me think about it.
Speaker 11 (48:18):
For you. Good for you, Yeah, proud of you. Know
that's good and so I appreciate you sharing that. Yes,
it is much more comfortable to wear the belly pack
or the fanny pack and or the inflatables. And they
have they've got all sorts of types nowadays you can
you can look at go to your favorite booting store
(48:41):
and just look and try things on see see how
it's going to feel.
Speaker 2 (48:46):
Yeah, if they don't have them, they'll even order them
for you there at Ta Mahoney Company.
Speaker 11 (48:52):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you want to you want to make
sure what you've got one on that fits you. I mean,
if you not going to have it all, make sure
it does fit, you know, make sure you've got a
leash on your paddle. You know, it's it's rough paddled
at home with just your hands. Try to try to
(49:14):
paddle with other people, at least one other person. And
you really ought to be a confident swimmer. I mean,
if you're if you're going out in a boat of
any kind, you really ought to try to become a
competent swimmer. If not, you darn sure ought to be
wearing that life jacket at all times, you know, and
steady the weather. It's one thing to go out with
(49:35):
the wind, but coming home against the wind can be
a bear, and that is not any fun. So pay
attention to that, pay attention to the to the sky.
And you know, this time of year, we can can
be perfectly sunny. In the next minute it can be
pouring and and really choppy out of this so pay
attention to those things. Try to carry got to buy
(50:00):
yourself a VHF marine radio to carry around just in
case something happens or you need help. You know that
VHF radio is monitored twenty four to seven by the Coastguard.
Not long ago I took a peek and they were
like some for eighty eight dollars that were waterproof and floated. Yep,
you know that that's pretty cheap insurance. So just just
(50:26):
you know, don't take it with a grain of salt.
Paddling is important. It's fun. It's a lot of fun,
a lot cheaper than the boat, but you still want
to take care of yourself and you want to plan,
plan for what's going to happen or what might happen,
so you can make sure you get home in one piece.
(50:47):
Great tip, Jim, Thank you guys, appreciate the time for
the Coast Guard obsility in Saint Pete. Jim foweill be
safe out there.
Speaker 2 (50:54):
Oh, thank you. Jim as always a pleasure to hear
from him. He's very informative. If we have enough time time.
We ought to go to Donald in Loops because is
I think his ears were ringing because Mike was talking
about him and his inboard motor that he's got on
that kayak and it'll do about thirty miles an hour.
Speaker 4 (51:17):
I think Donald, Oh my god, that's too funny. But
I think Jim was talking about me, but maybe my cohorts.
I don't know, because I'm like one of the most
safest out there. I got so much safety equipment on
my kayak, and I do wear that Mustang style jacket.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
And smart Yeah.
Speaker 4 (51:40):
My anchor trolley system, I've got a dual ankle trolley system.
The rope has built in reflective material. My anchor rope
has built in reflective material. I always run a flag.
Yesterday I was running my concrete public flag with my
Dassu flag, so because I was out of Kaladice, so
(52:00):
crossing a couple of channels and stuff. You got to
make sure you're seeing out there. But man, last Sunday,
I went out the anklotes and catching some nice big reds,
and all of a sudden, a wall of water was
coming at me. All of a sudden, ant clote islands disappeared.
It's like, you know what, this is not going to
be fun. In the next fifteen minutes, got back to
(52:21):
the boat ramp and the sky just opened up and
I got soaked, but pay attention to the weather out there,
even if as a boater, because I used to be
a boater and I miss having my boat, but I
left having a kayak. Yesterday at Kaladis, he catches some
nice redfish and trout with the artificials, you know, warming up,
(52:42):
doing a little experimenting with different colors and stuff, and
you know, for the CCA old release, it's gonna be
a lot of fun. You know, surprised Alan didn't get
an email you know about that.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
But he took his money out to hear that part.
You got an email if they had your money. He
took his money yeute.
Speaker 4 (53:05):
Yeah, yeah, I should have left it in there, but
I already I paid for for Mike Perry and Rick Rose.
I don't know if they kept their money in there
from last year or not. I don't know, but I
resubmitted it and just just repaid because it goes do
a great cause. I mean, we're going to spend that
(53:25):
kind of money anyway for raffle tickets and you know,
and everything else, and you know we'll get free food
and drinks and blah blah blah, so there's gonna be
a great time.
Speaker 2 (53:36):
Well, you get the membership, you become a member of CCA.
I'm a lifetime member, so I signed up my wife
or a friend just to get that Tide magazine and
to get those emails.
Speaker 11 (53:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (53:49):
Absolutely, Yeah, and you got grandkids, you can sign up.
Speaker 4 (53:55):
Oh my, Henry's been a member for years. I mean
every year, you know, since he was able to become
you know, in the CIA Star Tournament, he's he's been
in it. So you know, I get him like every
June or July. He you know, won the bass division
for the Real Animals Junior Pro Staff, first place in
(54:16):
the bass division. This year. We try to get him
on a grouper, but we got rocked a couple of times.
Speaker 11 (54:22):
But but he got.
Speaker 4 (54:24):
A lot of entries in CCA Starr and the Real
Animals Junior Pro Staff. He's got one more year. He'll
be seventeen next year. I can't believe he's gonna be seventeen,
which is just crazy. But next year, this is last
year for the Reen Ronalds Junior Pro Staff and I'm
going to take him down to the Keys with some
nice big mangos and some nice group or so for
(54:46):
that division. Go back to the same lake that we
went to for the bass.
Speaker 3 (54:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
I guess Mike Perry was talking about Mutt and Staffer too.
Speaker 4 (54:56):
Oh, Mutt's not bit delicious.
Speaker 2 (54:57):
Yeah, he was saying, it's uh right up there on
the top of the chart for him.
Speaker 4 (55:03):
Yeah, yeah, I used to I haven't caught a mutton
in a long time, but I've caught them on the hubbards,
but it's been a while for that. Those are some
good eating fish. But it's just a blasting out on
the water. Yesterday, came back in. Did my cheesebergs and
hot dogs fit a bunch of people. A couple of
strangers saw me cooking and I said, hey, I've got
(55:24):
plenty if you want to eat, and they said no,
we got to get going home. But thanks to the offer.
But yeah, I'll feed anybody. I don't care. You're out
there near me, you wanna eat, I don't care, it
don't matter. But it's always great to be out there.
Speaker 3 (55:42):
So that's awesome.
Speaker 4 (55:46):
Yep, Hey, I appreciate you guys. And uh oh, I
also run it. I told you about a flag. You know,
you got to be seen out there, especially crossing channels
because boaters do go by fast and I don't want
them to slow down, because if they slow down, that
means the way is even bigger. So just just go.
Speaker 2 (56:02):
And you know, I've I've struggled with that with kayakers
for a long time. They kind of give me a
look or they tell me I'm number one with a
hand signal. When I stay on plane as I go past,
and I'm like, I stay on plane and go past you,
you're gonna have a ripple wake. I come off plane
(56:22):
and bog past you. Of course I don't power bog,
but anyway, the wake is much worse. Just let me
skim the water right next to you. You'll have a
little ripple and then I and I will swerve as
far away from a paddler as possible while staying in
the channel.
Speaker 4 (56:41):
I have two when I had my boats, and so yeah,
so you just I mean, you just keep going. You
don't don't slow down. You know, I say, no, I've
waved the mind. Go go go, go, don't slow down,
just go. I'll take the waves. Not a big deal.
You know, he's a you know, he's a paddlecraft are
(57:02):
made to take some waves. So it's you know, you
just ride right into it. And you know, like any
even with a boat you don't want to be sideways
two weeks anyway, so you know, just pay attention.
Speaker 2 (57:15):
Yeah, all right, Donald, thank you for the call this morning.
I'm sure we'll talk to you next week and we'll
see Donald see you very shortly, Uh, Mahoney had to
step out for a minute, and I was worried about
going to Dylan Hubbard without Mahoney.
Speaker 3 (57:30):
Oh yeah, you don't want to give him any ads.
Speaker 2 (57:33):
So we got a little bit of a break here.
Hopefully Dylan my bullet proof vest on. Hopefully Dylan will
hang in there with the A team. You said he
doesn't call when Mike's not here. Oh, he must have
heard me.
Speaker 3 (57:45):
I don't know what, or maybe one of his workers
said we were saying something. I don't think he was listening.
Speaker 2 (57:51):
Well, this is a Teamhey, Real Animals Radio on Sunday morning.
We'll be right back with Captain Dylan Hubbard.
Speaker 3 (57:57):
After this, we're back ta mahone any Real Animals Sunday.
Captain Ben Marshall, Mike Mahoney entertaining you today. Hey, that
last storm we saw me and Ben were talking about
it this morning kind of look like it fizzled out.
So hopefully we dodged another bullet. But one of the
things I want to remind you about are trees. If
(58:20):
they're hanging over the house, hanging over the driveway, something
you're worried about, you need to get a hold of
Soool's Tree Service eight one three, eight oh two, five, five,
four to two. They're definitely my go to guys. They've
taken care of my mom's house, my house, and everybody
I know's house. Because if you live anywhere Inland, you're
(58:41):
going to see a lot of the moak trees. A
lot of the moak trees will start rotting from the center.
You never know it. Have them come out and inspect it.
That's what I normally do. I call Ricky up. Ricky
comes over when he gets a chance. He looks at
the tree, inspects it, and he'll tell you he's told
me before I thought trees had to come out. He said,
let's just trim it. Let's get some of this weight
(59:03):
off there. It'll be all right. And he's also said
that needs to go. It's gonna drop, it's gonna tear
up something. So get a hold of them. Fool's Tree
Service at eight one three, eight oh two, five five
four to two. They are the good tree guys.
Speaker 2 (59:19):
That's awesome something to really think about. Those trees. And
I've never seen so many trees piled by side the
road as we had last year, and that was something.
So we're gonna go to the A team here. You know,
I was thinking, you keep saying they share a backpack.
Speaker 3 (59:32):
They speaking of oak trees. We got Dylan hovered off.
Speaker 2 (59:35):
But you know, if they truly share a backpack, uh,
Dylan would have to loosen up his strap or he
carry all the weight. He's three or four.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
They put the yogurt and granola.
Speaker 5 (59:49):
Good morning, guys. What's happening buddy, Not much, man, just
enjoying another beautiful morning here and lots of big fish
moving around the It was a stellar forty four hour trip,
big pile of gags and some nice muntains again and
lots of yellow tails, mangroves or millions, porgies, big kingfish,
(01:00:10):
a lot of logic action. It's been stellar, man. It's
just trying to sort through them all and trying to
make hay while the sun is shining here for those
last couple days of our short gag group of season.
But this weather is not making it easy, that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:00:25):
Yeah, it's been tough on some of the smaller boats.
Dylan talking to some friends and stuff. Really the Tommy Larne,
I think, is running a forty out there and it's
still he's telling me it's pretty bumpy, and the weather
man has predicted long. Yes, that's what that's the feedback.
I've talked to Mark Feewalks the same way. It's made
(01:00:45):
it tough on these fourteen days, for sure, one hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (01:00:50):
The first three four days this season was really tough,
and now it's gotten really tough the last three four
days again. Right now, it is forecasted the euro and
GFS have forecasted about one point seven foot one point
six foot. Currently it's almost four foot. Yeah, crazy, more
than double what's forecasted. And it's just unsafe. It's downright unsafe.
(01:01:14):
It's creating a lot of challenges and it's very frustrating
on these smaller faster boats. I mean, we got the
Flying Hub two. It's a forty four foot by fourteen big, stable,
safe boat, so it can handle it, but it's no
fun when you get out there and you're expecting two
foot or less and it's up over four foot that's right,
not fun. Plus there's storms out there on top of it,
(01:01:36):
so it's really more like six foot so it makes
it challenging. But fishing is good if you're able to
get out there and deal with the weather on these
short little weather windows that we've had, and once gags close,
we've still got plenty of other fish to go out
there and go capture as well. Looking forward to some
good opportunities for plenty of red grouper through the end
(01:01:58):
of the year. The trigger fish, one thing I've started
to mention and want to keep emphasizing is triggerfish are
going to be a little bit of a challenge. It
seems like they're going through a stock assessment right now
and the early indicators are not very positive. So get
your triggerfish while you can. And then amberjack Man, it's
(01:02:19):
a strange situation. They're open, but they could close at
any time, or they could stay open for all of
September and October. No one knows, so it's a strange situation.
But take advantage of that why you can as well.
So fishing is going.
Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Well, that's awesome, Dylan, what's y'all heading out every day?
What's your next big trip going up.
Speaker 5 (01:02:41):
Oh man, it is back to back to back. That
boat has been at the dock since June first, maybe
a total of twenty nights in total. I mean it
is constantly moving. The big Florida fishermen, the flyne Up two.
It's booked out every day. It's just a matter of
trying to find these weather windows to get out there
(01:03:01):
to them. So we are out there right now and
fighting the weather and hopefully bringing back another big pile
of fish. So looking forward to it. We have had
some really nice pelagic action. Man, that's been cool. We
had a bunch of mahis behind the boat on the
last thirty nine hour trip. At the end of a spot,
the mahis were charging some chum in the water and
(01:03:22):
all of a sudden they all started scattering like you
would see sardines or little threadfins do when the mackerel
and kingfish start hammering them near shore. And we're like,
what's going on? And Cap Will ran upstairs and from
the roof he could see about a sixty to eighty
pound wile who chasing these making them scatter like a
(01:03:44):
little light bait. It was pretty cool to see. Wish
we had a little bit of an opportunity to film
it a little bit closer. It would have been a
killer video. But yeah, it's been pretty wild out there,
with some really active pelagic action and the bite on
the bottom going really strong for us. And we're just
a couple of weeks away here from that hogfish by
picking up near shore and the mackerel showing back up,
(01:04:06):
so it's an exciting time for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:04:08):
Yeah, I've even seen some of the hogfish starting to
get called already. But don't you have don't you have
something going on September twenty sixth OCC? Do I got
the date right on that close close?
Speaker 5 (01:04:22):
We have a September twenty third Tuesday night. September twenty third,
the fourth Tuesday of every month. We've got the OCC
Roadhouse event over there at OCC on forty ninth, just
south of Almerton. It's going to be a great time.
We got Bullbay Rods to give away ingle cooler, some
real animals and Hubbard's Marina Swag.
Speaker 3 (01:04:41):
Who's your speaker this time?
Speaker 5 (01:04:44):
I am not sure. We're we're talking to Jeff Page
waiting to confirm that one, and then we have some
others in the hopper and I'm hoping you'll be there too.
Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
Uh yeah, I was hoping you'd be over at Fenns
last week when I was there. But you know, once again,
tho support from Ben Marshall, Dylan Hubbard or Mike Anderson.
Speaker 5 (01:05:03):
So I wish I would have known about that, because
I would love to come heckle you as you have come.
Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
You hide those from me, Yeah, I tell you the
next the day after, don't I.
Speaker 5 (01:05:15):
Yeah, exactly. But I did watch some of it on
YouTube because the Finn's Fishing Club does a good job
of posting their videos on their on their Facebook and
YouTube channel, so I caught some of it. It was good,
and you always do a great job. I enjoyed well.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
I appreciate you. It good people over there.
Speaker 5 (01:05:32):
Speaking of seminars, you've done Old Salts coming up September eleventh,
So this coming week Thursday, I'll be with Old Salts
at CJ's backstage over there in Tyrone from seven to nine.
Speaker 3 (01:05:44):
So that's a little bit fishing with them, different location.
I went there at the beginning of the year and
they were over there off Bay Pines, and now this
one's y'all relocated. I'm sure to get more people in
there when you come in, it seems like it's a
big drawl. So where is CJ's Agains is.
Speaker 5 (01:06:02):
In Tyrone Mall area, kind of real close to Hubbard's
Bay Pines. It's not far from where they were before.
CJS is right there in that strip mall next to
the La Fitness, the gym and one of my favorite
restaurants in Pinola's County, Athenian Gardens. So I'm pumped up.
It's gonna be a good time. They get a little
(01:06:22):
pre pre pre seminar meal.
Speaker 3 (01:06:25):
Yeah, those old salt. That group is a bunch of
good people, that's for sure.
Speaker 5 (01:06:30):
Amen to that, looking forward to it for sure. I
appreciate your time, boys. Hopefully you all have a good
show and good luck then with your co host today.
Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
All right, thanks Dylan, Dylan. Maybe they got a bigger
venue for air circulation. You know, I don't want to
use up all the I don't want all the oxygen
to be deleted in one little area where, especially when
him and Mic are together. Man, I still I've stood
next to before. It got a little dizzy, lightheaded, little lightheaded.
(01:07:04):
We got a break coming up. But we sure want
to talk to Rick Gross down there in Bradenton, Tamhoney
Real Animals Radio will be back after this good morning.
Thanks for listening this morning, whether behind the wheel or
behind the reel. Briar Greaves Insurance, as you covered, from
boat policies to auto, home and business insurance. Tampa Bay
(01:07:28):
based agency provides you the lifestyle you live on land
and on the water. They're trusted by Florida families for
over thirty years. Call eight one three eight seven six
four one six six or visit Briangreavesinsurance dot com and
let them build you a policy that works as hard
as you do. Speaking of works as hard as you do, Rick,
(01:07:53):
I was down there with Captain Rooster Curry a week
or so ago and the trout fishing and then coastal
is phenomenal still. I mean, just ask the comrades.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
It must have been in between the naps.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
There was a nap.
Speaker 12 (01:08:09):
Yeah, Well it's been that. That trout fishing all year
has been just fantastic. I mean it's been since the
beginning of the season and it's been it's been a
really nice addition to going out there and bend and
a rod. That's for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
One thing you've gotten inner coastal there Inna Maria in
South is the grass is healthy, so Scott Moore has
told us over and over, if you got the grass,
you got the groceries. If you've got the groceries, you
got the fish.
Speaker 12 (01:08:43):
Yeah, and y'all, y'all were just fishing right there An
Maria sound right there close, weren't I think I talked
to Rooster, he's got that pontoon boat.
Speaker 3 (01:08:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:08:51):
I think we burned a half a cup cup of fuel.
Speaker 12 (01:08:58):
Yeah, that's nice. That's always nice.
Speaker 11 (01:09:00):
Said.
Speaker 12 (01:09:01):
The trout fishing has been good all throughout the year,
both south, I mean, any any place I've gone in
my range, which is from the Skyway down to Long
Bar basically south a Long Bar, and some of it
has been really good. I'm looking forward to that CCA
tournament and they get to throw my top water, probably
(01:09:21):
a little bit more than I should, but I'll get
to be doing that. And you know, Mike, Mike and
Donald both fishing there. You know, I don't know if
they realize that they're fishing against me. We're all fishing
against each other in that tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:09:37):
Yeah, it's not a boat per boat, it's per person,
which you know, the captain can change those rules on
his own boat. I know that when I'm out there fishing.
I fished some tournaments before that were individual and they
were end up on the boat, and we kind of
make an agreement that, hey, this is a boat tournament.
(01:09:58):
So amongst the three of you were it all.
Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
Do read the rules before you listen to the entertainment
that we try to provide here each and every Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:10:08):
Definitely don't go by what I say.
Speaker 2 (01:10:10):
Hey, Rick, I've still got a bag full of those
jigs I bought last season. So in between filling deer
feeders and trips to Georgia, it's going to be time
to start beating the lily pads before too long, at
least by November.
Speaker 12 (01:10:28):
Yeah, there was an old timer I saw on Eastapoga
and I was out there. You know, I get anty
and I was out there. There's a hole out of Henderson's.
There's a pad field out there. I was out there
before Thanksgiving a couple of years ago and started beating
those pads down and I caught a speck pretty quick,
(01:10:51):
and then I caught a big bluegill. But I didn't
do anything for the longest time, and ran all over
the place out there. Of course, you know me, I
get to looking at my watch and six hours has
gone by, and I'm like, dang it. My plan was
to fish it for a little while and nothing was happening,
pull out and go hit another lake that's close by.
And that got changed because I just get too into
(01:11:14):
what I'm doing. And I get back to the dock
there and some older gentleman that stays there at the
camp that's there, he apparently he must have had binoculars
on me, and he was like.
Speaker 8 (01:11:26):
Oh, what'd you do?
Speaker 12 (01:11:27):
And you know, he says, I saw you over here.
I saw you over there, and I'm like really, He goes,
I don't do much here until after Thanksgiving, and so
I kind of had that in my mind. But then
my one buddy that I've got into specfishing here, we
fished Lake Manatee and Lake manate We pretty much reatrolling
Lake Manateee. It's a total different animal than like fishing
(01:11:51):
over at East to Poga. And he started in October
and I think he caught like fifteen twenty fish in
October on Lake Manatee. So yeah, I've got that going on.
I just was funny. We were listening to you earlier,
and Ben was talking about napping while everybody else was
in the pool, and I said, well, that's nothing new.
(01:12:12):
I remember Ben napping when we were in high school.
Speaker 2 (01:12:18):
So guilty, guilty.
Speaker 12 (01:12:23):
When when you nap, are you deer hunting or are
you fishing or what are you?
Speaker 2 (01:12:27):
Depends on the time of year.
Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
Up in the Standy's sleeping is some deer walk by?
I bet.
Speaker 12 (01:12:36):
I got to do. Uh, I got to do a
little buggy buggy whip fishing. Jerry Hill's son, Jerry Hill
used to do the Braden and Harold here for years
the outdoor rider for our newspaper, and his son fly fishes.
He's got a little place right at Buckhead Ridge and
it's a it's a little bitty trailer, but the whole
(01:12:59):
trailer on the inside of it there's some spinning tackle,
but all on the.
Speaker 9 (01:13:04):
Wall, it's all fly rots.
Speaker 12 (01:13:06):
He's all in the fly fishing. And we fished the
rim Canal when we're down there, and I hadn't fished
it in several years, and years ago Jerry was showing
my son how to fly fish. I think Rich was
like fourteen years old at the time, and I just
got memories there that I'm never going to forget. But
(01:13:27):
what was interesting is we usually do real well on
the bluegill down there, and we caught bluegill, but we
did a whole lot better on Mayn sicklets. And my
buddy Calvin was calling them okachobee snapper, and I said,
you know, that really fits for them, you know, as
far as the way they fight, and just they're so
(01:13:51):
aggressive and it's just awesome. I watched one one time
he threw the bug out there, and you see this
wake off to the side, like three feet away from
the bug, and it comes flying over there and smacks
that popping bug on the surface, and you swear you
had about a four pound bass on and you bring
(01:14:11):
it up and it's probably a pound around a pound
Mayan cicklet. And they I got no problem with them
taking over. That's a great fishery down there.
Speaker 2 (01:14:22):
Yeah, it sounds like fun some of those exotics right.
Speaker 12 (01:14:25):
Exactly exactly, and I caught a handful of them years ago.
But he says, they're kind of it's like they're taking over.
But as soon as you get a good cool front
down there, he says, it's like they disappear and They're
kind of like mangroves for me in the bay. Mangroves
when it's hot, the hotter the better in the bay.
(01:14:46):
And then as soon as we start getting that first
couple of coal fronts, then mangroves kind of disappear. Yeah,
I haven't done the mangroves snapper fishing like I normally do.
We we quite a few as bycatch yesterday while we
were snooke fishing. Of course we're using the hatch bait
(01:15:06):
and you end up catching mangrove snapper while you're doing that.
We had a nice little mess of them, not even
targeting them, you know, just fishing around the yours to bars.
Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
People want to take a trip out with you down
there and beautiful Anne Marie Island. Tell them how they
can get a hold of you.
Speaker 12 (01:15:22):
Rick, Well, the best way is to just go through
real animals. But my number is nine four one seven
three zero five one four eight and the web page
is Fishy Business LLC dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:15:36):
Well, I don't know yet who I'm fishing with in
a couple of weeks, but we'll be ready. That's a
great tournament. I'll look forward to seeing you there.
Speaker 12 (01:15:44):
Yeah, I enjoy that tournament a lot. I mean, I'm
hoping to maybe explore some other areas instead of we
tended to just about every time we fish. We fished
around McGill Bay, and we've done all right, I mean,
but we haven't really got into gotten really gotten into
the fish. But hopefully this year we'll get it done.
Speaker 3 (01:16:05):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:16:06):
Thanks for the call, Rick, Always good to hear from you.
Speaker 12 (01:16:10):
Yeah, I can't wait till it cools down and we
get back out there on them specs.
Speaker 2 (01:16:14):
I'm ready for it. Talk to you later. Thanks to
the call, Rick, always a great call. Listen cast your
line for a cause. Join Habitat for Humanity Tampa Bay
Hillsboro for the Veterans Inshore Slam Fishing Tournament at Fenn's
Dockside and Apollo Beach. It's on Saturday, October eleventh at
eight am. Support our veterans, enjoy a day in the water,
(01:16:38):
and help build homes and hope. Last year was was
Mike's first year hosting an event, and they raised over
one hundred and twenty nine thousand dollars and through the
years this tournament has helped Habitat Tampa Bay Hillsborough raise
over nine hundred and fifty eight thousand dollars for veteran
housing and home preservations. So please come on out and
(01:16:59):
support a great organization that supports are the veterans ought
to be a good time.
Speaker 3 (01:17:05):
You know, Ben, when I was sitting here thinking in
the store, there's one very common problem, and it can
go from the smallest boat to the biggest boat. Batteries.
Make sure your batteries are in good shape. We deal
with Tampa Bay Battery. They're over there, sixteen hundred East
Bush Boulevard. That's who Private labels are, battery good people,
(01:17:28):
and they stand behind their product. But I can tell
you that constantly every week people come in. My electronics
are shutting off. My troll of motor doesn't seem to
work as good. My outboard won't start, but my lights
work well. You know a lot of time those outboards,
the newer ones, they take a you know, they need
(01:17:48):
a certain voltage to turn over. They just want to
like the old days where you could just rope start them.
I don't even know if they I don't even think
they put ropes starts up there anymore. But and you
don't want to rope start a four stroke anyway. Two
strokes much easier. But check on your batteries. If you
charge your batteries every week, or if you have an
(01:18:10):
automatic charger that you have plugged in that charges as
it needs, turns on and off. If you have a
maintenance type battery, you need to get inside there make
sure that acid levels up. If it's not, you'll burn
a cell. If you need a new battery, definitely look
at the Tampa Bay batteries and private labels we got
at Mahoney's, or you can call them direct eight one
(01:18:32):
three nine three two zero one zero eight. If you're
in Penel's County, give Bobby a call over there at
Tampa Bay Battery and ask him where he sells his
batteries in Penels. If Mahoney's as close as for you,
come on by. But if you're outside of that area,
you're in Panel's County, your way north. He's got dealers
(01:18:54):
all over the area. You can give him a call
at eight one three nine three two zero one zero
eight and they'll hook you up.
Speaker 2 (01:19:01):
Well like me, I asked, you said, I think my
batteries are four years old, Mike, should I go ahead
and replace them? And you said yeah, after four years
we'll come to find out they were twenty seventeen's, so
I bought four of them myself. So, uh, we've got
a you know, between the tournament coming up and needing
the trolling motor and then a trip to Boca gran
here at the end of the month, your trip. Yeah,
(01:19:24):
you want to make sure you got the right batteries.
So we're up against the end of the show here,
mister mahoney, I want to make sure that everybody listened
to Dylan Hubbard and Mike talk about the weather forecast
for offshore for whatever reason, has not been very accurate,
and they're talking about one to two foot seas and
(01:19:47):
Hubbard's nose, they've been running into four foot seas out there.
So you've got a full moon that's probably disappeared by now.
I'm sure we're locked up in a dark room. It's
hard to see outside from here. But U south or
excuse me, yeah, southwest winds six to twelve I mean
inshore and near shore. I think you'll be okay.
Speaker 3 (01:20:08):
