Speaker 1 (00:00):
In the desert. We can't remain day. Thanks for joining
us on the muster. My name's Andy Muyer.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Our next guest is Andrew Welsh out of Twin Farm Genetics,
the home of Teff from the sponsors of the five
day forecast here on the muster. He's also a member
of the Southern Field Days Committee Andie Farms down the
Wayemea Valley with his wife Catherine.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Good afternoon snow.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Yeah, afternoon, Andy, you were coming to here from a
nice weee sort of a foggy day in the Wyemere
Valley today actually sort of weave it a drizzle overnight,
but nothing really just settled to dustb dere.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
I say it is at the start of autumn.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Well, I know, getting up fair if your early starts
with the Field Days Committee there, and it did certainly
have that feel in the air when we're getting up
from those early starts.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
So you've obviously been busy at the Field Days. We're
talking about that for a start, you're doing the rubbish.
Do a great job as well with the speed here
on Friday afternoon. That was pretty cool by all accounts.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, I think that was a great way to sort
of wind up and finish off the Field Days. The
crowd there really got into it. No exact numbers, but
I'd say to be close to a thousand people they're
watching that speech here, which was fantastic and a big
thanks to all the sponsors that come on board to
help us run that event too.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
The OLDPEM is not too good on a hand piece, so.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Well, yeah, to be fair, I can have the odd
lamb get away on me too, Andy, So yeah, I
think got on them for getting up and giving them
a nudge or that takes a bit of courage you
get up and do that in front of a big crowd.
Full credit to.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Them, especially if something like that that can be intimidating
with just one person watching you.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Whole bar exactly. And yeah, we didn't want them to
be beating the boys in the open with their record
times either, so you had to have a wee wiggler one.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
So the Field Days from your perspective, everything went pretty.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Good, Yeah, I think so, Andy. A lot of positivity
out there with people. Yeah, prices are looking really good.
Everyone's pretty happy that the prices are holding up. To
be fair, most of the most of South and Otago
is actually pretty good. For feed. But yeah, everybody making
rest coard numbers of bales and that talking to clients
around about, which is quite surprise me because we're we're
(02:07):
the other way around. We still haven't made any winter
feed here on the on the ranch at home, and
we're actually going to do some whole crop balers this
week just to try and get some bales on the ground.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
And the rest thing.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
You say that a few people are saying they need
a bit of rain and sooner than later.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yes, yeah, well we're still we're still green, but there's
just no real feed in front. We're just bouncing lambs
around every day or every second day, and you're not
exactly sure. There's no great plan with where they go next.
In another another sort of week's time. You're sort of
scratching ahead a bit.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Sounds more or less a green draft.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Would you say, yes, yeah, it's just that way. You
would just yeah, get a good inch of rain or
a couple of inches of rain, and it'll turn around.
We've got the heat and the soil so it'll kick away.
But we're just having a sort up of the lambs today,
putting the first of the lambs on the kale, so
aiming to put those midweight range lambs on there. That's
sort of thirty five to thirty eight kilo lambs that
are going on twenty to the het deer, and they'll
(03:02):
go on for three weeks and then hopefully the aim
is to kill all those in three weeks time.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Will you do this every year around this time put
stuff on the kale.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah, it's certainly one of those levers that you can
pull if we need to, and certainly this year, Yeah,
it looks like we need to at the moment, the
struggling struggling to move lambs around in places so that
basically frees up or a whole you're not load of
lambs just disappears off the farm for three weeks virtually.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
How are you keeping the weights up for the works?
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, we are, yep, Well we're trying to anyway. But
that's the next thing that we'll have to watch is that, Yeah,
if we don't get rained shortly, we'll be starting to
drop those lambs. It's one we killed, we're all over
forty five kilos. So it is good that like, yeah,
you're getting that two hundred and ten dollar lambs coming through,
Like it is really good to see that money coming
in and we want to try and maximize it as
(03:49):
much as we can without eating in the next season budget.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Absolutely, and I may the worst case scenario if you
need to store some lambs. So the money's pretty good
there as well.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Exactly, yep, So yeah, I hope we'll make that decision
on another sort of three weeks when these and start
coming off the cail. With how we're looking for feed,
but we always get dry at some stage up here.
It's just a matter of how long for.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
So how are you looking there as far as the
arable side of your operation?
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Oh, the crops are looking fantastic to be fair so well,
we've but gutted about having to whole crop some, but
it will be good that it'll give us extra grass
going into the winter. We'll be able to get them
back into young grasses in the next sort of couple
of weeks and it will help out there. We won't
need quite as much baal as going forward, so it's
sort of a win win.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
So you're not concerned about the feed levels at the moment.
Heading into autumn, you're pretty sure to correct itself.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Yeah, it always comes right, it's the theory South and
may let you down. Well, it may get you down,
but never let you down. So we've got those salt
temperatures there, say, as we get rain it'll bounce back.
And soccer still looking in really good condition. So yeah,
it can't complain too much really.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
So is that your focus over the next couple of weeks. Firstly,
familiarize yourself with your farm and your dogs.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
What's the that's pretty much it. Yeah, yesterday was the
first day getting out, give the dogs a run round
and having drive around and see where all the stock
were and what the what the plan that staff had
for stuff of where they're going, and yeah, just try
and get my head back around where everything is again,
to be fair.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
So you're one of the main stays of wonder as
you're back into the football side of things again this season.
That's just around the corner.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
It is summer. Foody started up already, so yes, but
Rusty I'm giving that a miss. Just helping out with
the kids team at the moment when needed there to
give them a bit of assistance, yes, but other than that, yeah,
the plan is to try and strap the boots on
and get back into it. So I think it would
only be another couple of weeks and we'll be into
some pre season training there, which will actually be be needed,
(05:43):
I think after after a few good barbecues and cold
ales at the field days.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Because you've stayed pretty much injury.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Free last season his first year. Sort of taller moniscus
on my knee which happed me out for most of
last season, but other than that, you touch would but
the body does to let you know you need to
slow down and support the kids, but more I think
we'll call it.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Hey anyway, Snow, We'll let you carry on quite a
bit going on as you re goo and reintroduce yourself
to your dogs and your livestock. Twin Farm Genetics, the
