She was Deary Training of the Year twenty twenty five,
but she relinquished that crown last night as we found
out the winners for the South and Otago Dairy Industry
Association Awards.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Emma joins us this afternoon, Emma, how are you? Thank you?

Andy.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
I had a great night last night.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
I was fortunate enough to be involved with it last night. You,
like I said, last year, winning Dairy Trainee of the Year.
From your perspective, I suppose what was the cool thing
when you won the event that you could relate to
last night?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
I remember last year, I just the mirror awards went
out and I didn't get any other Oh no, I'm
out the running. I've had a great time so didn't
expect anything. And then when I was announced on the podium,
I said, holy moly, and it was such a high.
Like I just remember the buzz and then seeing the winners.
I thought, you're feeling that right now. That is so cool.
(01:00):
You've worked so hard for it. So yeah, I just
think it's really cool that it can be shared and
celebrated like that.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
So what about yourself, what have you been up to lately,
because you're a lady about.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
The province doing this that and everything else. What's been happening?
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Oh gosh, what't been happening? Well, we've been busy with
the Scouts in Belfer and we've got quite a lot
of new kids there, so it's pretty cool. The Balfa
Young farmers are active at the moment. We've got our
AGM coming up a few tournament weeks and then heading
off to Stuart Island this weekend, so that's pretty cool
to spend all of our herd and money on the farm.
(01:37):
At the moment, everything's going well. We've got grass coming
out of our ears, so that's a good problem to have.
We've got the cun and carry wagon on today, cow steel,
milk and goods and yeah, that's about it at the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
What do you call the Scout massa and cabs? That's
our kayla. What is it with the Scouts?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Just leader, that's what I How long have.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
You been a leader at Scouts?
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Probably coming out two years now.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Obviously you enjoy it. Is there a lot of buying
from the from the community.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Oh yeah, there is. It's so cool. Like all the
oldies they say, oh, back in my day, I was
part of Scouts, and so there's a big yeah. There's
a lot of community buy and people love to see
the kid down and about. So it's really cool and
it's a good test of my leadership because if I'm
doing something wrong, I know it's straight away. Those kids
are pretty honest.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
So what do you call old? Just putting it out there?
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Great here, sixty miles.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Here, So Scouts isn't a pretty good place pretty much?
Would you say, yeah, it is?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, it's definitely is.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Do you do a lot of connecting with other Scout
Scouting organizations like there's one here in gor for example.
Do you guys connect at all?
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Ah, we did last week was Saint Andrews at the
lime Hill School, but it was the first time we've
done it. Jamboree is coming up at the end of
the year, so there's a few kids that are out fundraising.
They've got to raise about three thousand dollars by December,
so it's a big mission for them. But it's cool
to get them to connect it already with the kids
(03:21):
that are going from other areas and they're going to
have a hell of a good time.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
So is Jembree this year.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Mysteret Creek now Young Farmer.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Space as well because we taught young farmers on the
show more often than not. Your ag yim because you
guys have been going up and leaps and bounds.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yes, yes, it's pretty cool what our club has achieved
in the last two years, three years.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
What's been the biggest achievement for the club that you've seen?
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Last year we got Club of the Year, which was
really cool. We've got a real strong chair, Taylor, and
she's doing so well with such a good support committee.
And then this year we've got into the air with
Miss Balfour the Drag Show, so that was pretty cool.
But I think the biggest achievement is actually our numbers
and how active we are, not just in the community
(04:11):
but with each other. We catch up weekly and then
obviously monthly for our meetings. So yeah, I actually think
that having that in Balfour and having such a strong
younger community is our biggest success in my eyes.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Now you say you've got heaps of grass on your farm,
just give people an idea of where your farmers, because
not a northern Southland is like that.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
No, no, So we are in Blenneux and then yeah,
we get the cheeky wee bit of rain coming over
the hills, but then if you compare it to about
ten kilometers further on and just out of Balfo, they're
a completely different climate. So yeah, we've been really really
lucky this season. We're just holding onto their grass for

as long as we can and extending around.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
So it's been a good year for milk production.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yeah, it has, and we haven't like exceeded leaps and
bounds from last season, but we're really happy with our performance.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Well, well, just go back to last night the winners
who got the chocolates? Would you want? Do you want
to just run through the names for us? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Sure thing so beg Congratulations to Scott and Stacey macarey
for taking out she Farmer of the Year. Pretty cool.
We had a quick yarn to them last night. They
became third last year and came in guns blazing this year,
so it's really cool to see them do well. And
then Lan Brayford, he was Manager of the Year off memory,
(05:33):
I think he was for Tuna Group. He was a
static so it's pretty cool to see him do really well.
And then Taylor Old he got dairy training of the Year. Yeah,
I think it's really cool, especially for Taylor going in.
I know what she's going to experience and it's going
to be a ride of a lifetime.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
So yeah, so it's opened up networks, would you say,
from your from your side of.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Things, Oh, definitely, Like from the as the trainee you
hit up, they'll hit up to road aera for a
week and they'll connect with all the other winners go
around and you just it's so cool to meet people
from all over the country and share that passion and
you're all doing well in your own field, so you're
meet with people that are at the same level as
(06:17):
you and you stay in touch. There's a few from
my year that have gone contract milking, others have stepped
out of the industry into royal professional roles, others buying cows.
So yeah, it's really cool to share that success. And
then from that you get introduced to all these mentors.
You take down as many phone numbers as you can,
and yeah, throughout the year, I've been calling them advice
(06:39):
things that are happening in the industry. So yeah, it's
just such a cool, cool thing to be a part of.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
You know, well done, Emma by the way, no beauty
shows planning for Balfa for the near future.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
No, no, I think we'll keep it at a ten
year events.
