Speaker 1 (00:10):
Jamie King farms over near Lake Heroco and joins us
in the Sergeant and Farming ground out. Thanks for Sergeant
and stock foods, pastear and gore. We go and catch
up with various farmers throughout the southern region. Jamie, good afternoon,
Good mate, there were going today? Pretty good yourself? How's
everything over at beautiful Lake Roco?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, well we need the mountains back out Andy, after
quite a bit of precipitation there over the weekend. It's
sort of well, we started off with quite a lot
in the forecast and at east and then actually got
it wrong, so we've got quite a bit more than
what we anticipated. But yeah, it's grasses grow and Andy.
Look it's nice and mild and the sun's out today here,

(00:51):
but it's sort of just slowed down the a couple
of projects flying with the projects, so God only go
at the moment. But that's all right. We'll take some
everybody warm and feed you get now again. And the
winter was always good to have.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
So did you need the rain?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
No, no, mate, we never even need the rain in
the liver and valley, Mate, one step off a swamp.
So the day you hear asks squawking for rain as
a bad day. The rest of the province is probably
about naked, just with their well west coast sort of
the climate tucking behind the mountains there. But no, yeah,
we didn't need it, but everything will, everything will like
it that the crops will enjoy it. And then year

(01:27):
blocks paddics of grays there early last week have bounced
something incredible, So that's not a bad plan to have.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
It's incredible the growth at the moment. And I mean,
this is happening. This is not happening everywhere we understand it.
Although Riversdale got a good values yesterday which was appreciated
areas like that. But I just can't believe how quickly
the lawn's growing at the moment. It's probably the fastest
it's been all season.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah, one hundred percent. But I mean we've had some
clear skies and a bit of heat. Like you'd argue summer
was two months late getting to us, so you know,
perhaps wearing for good March in April. The long range
looks relatively good through after Easter, I see, so, and
that just helps with a bit of a bit of
blue sky and sunshine makes all the all the world
of difference, doesn't it so, and yeah, just it's nice

(02:13):
to have at this time in the air, you know,
you lack a daylight airs and just more fee gives
a bit of flexibility on you know, finished the last
few lambs or you're not fox holding to a corner mate,
you can sort of just just sort of here you
goin forward.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
How the lamb's been considering it hasn't been a lot
of sun.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Pretty good, mate, We sort of mean it's got good.
A bit of a sort of shot the other day
we've got not the unit load went down and sort
of alone and didn't in there that all that good.
But I know they came back at eighteen sixes or
eighteen seven so they're big. They're probably arguably not they're
still a little bit hard, but yeah, if we get
another good week at sun. I think the last ten

(02:49):
days have been contos on the Lamb front. And but yeah,
there's a bit of clover apartment's hit around Stalny with
a bit of warmth, so we're yeah, but in a
different scene the last Anyway, last time we couldn't last year,
we couldn't fatting the thing. So now this year they're
all going out pretty well based.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
On everything happening around the world on the geopolitical landscape anyway,
a fewer levels and the likes for it. All these
things are coming into the equation obviously, Yes, ah.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Hugely mate. Yeah, we have a field update of the
budget to finish a year out and you know you
liver with the aid the other day and you know,
jump from sort of the six or five to seven
thousand dollars a month to tearly eighteen and really was
a reasonally big field just through the rest of the season.
But I'm you and it's a berg one. Just they're
going to take the cream off the probably the top

(03:39):
of the scorn, mate, I suppose, And you know, you
can only control what you control and sort of the
farm gate, can't you. So but hopefully something sort of
ramifies itself in the medium to short term and this
doesn't drag on for a while because it's gonna start
burning they very quickly. I think Andy or everything freight obviously, yeah,

(04:03):
returns and all their costs. Yeah, it's been an interesting one.
Or said to get a finger pulled out and get
that all locked up for the I didn't have much
leaf to do for the dalance to season, but just
trying to source it. Make sure I've got my heabs
on it for this year anyway. And but yeah, Furlozer coming,

(04:24):
they said, we cancel the guarantee and in the spring
torn at the moment. So it's just sort of running
on the Yeah, just on the wherever the wind takes
us at the moment, isn't it. Yeah, And everything happens
so quick now, and you like, look, look what's happened
in the last four weeks. You know, we've gone from
beer and skittles and sunshine and lollipops to a this
is eating ugly again. But I suppose we had it

(04:46):
too good for six raven huns, didn't we. You know,
something's been someone's be able for tours early cots somewhere.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
But we deserve to have a better for more longer
than six to eight months. So that's the bigger about all.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Of this, oh special off the back of the last
two or three years. You know, you mentioned this to
bark will Mate, you know, eighteen months ago, the state
of their red meat sector, like they it would be
pretty untidy. I don't know what the banks were done
with their Familand, but it would have been really, really ugly.
So yeah, I don't know. Everything happens for a reason.
I suppose, doesn't it. Well, that's what I keep telling myself.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
You talk about lambs away to the works. It sounds
like there's a bit of a bottleneck now obviously though,
because a lot of people have been hanging on. But
the boys are Joe outis and not out already.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, there'll be a few starting to pack out now. Yeah,
I think all the plant's pretty full and lambs come on.
And I know a lot of guys have targeted higher weights,
so that's been interesting. So I think, you know, lot
the store market eased a little bit, I think, but yeah,
going forward, and the lambs always going to be always
going to be worth a buck or two when they

(05:51):
when they come around. They're still not out there, are
they any So if they go around in the system somewhere.
So we'll wait and see. And I know Kennyby were
getting a few because those boys had a terrific grass
are in season. Not so much for the arable fellows.
But yeah, I know, I'll just wait to see. You
need a crystal ball? Well, actually no, I don't don't
want to crystal ball, mate, see someone there's more fun

(06:11):
not tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
If you hit a crystal ball, you'll probably be very
wealthy man.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah you would be, you would be, mate, But yeah,
I don't think I want to know. They keep me awake,
it what, mate?

Speaker 1 (06:22):
As far as kettle prices, they looking still pretty deeper.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah that's quite good, mate. We're not to sec thirty
one the other day. Just some dry cows after pretty
chicken in a hendful of cow balls ahead and I'll
think you know, the whole thirty one on the unit
load average just show twenty five hundred bucks. So it's
still a hell of a cheeck andy for threequels and

(06:47):
loaded kit. It wouldn't it.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
You just got to smile though, finally getting their returns.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Idn't see, mate, and just put her away for rainy day.
You know, just a few things. We've arguably probably still
worned up with not a beer year this year, if
one actually is. I've upgrade with a plant and things,
and you just make hay all the sunshines, don't you.
And then, because you know full well you know next
year it won't be like this. It could be better,
but it could be worse too. You just don't know,

(07:13):
so you just you get pretty good at it afterward,
don't you.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
So what's your focus over the next couple of days
before the easter bunny turns out.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
I'm finished winning some cows made on Wednesday, and tomorrow
I'm away with the local school rip given the in
the hand of his parent help just to go for
a little bit of a walk. And then I'm still
getting some dinnit in up mating. I'm bit, I'd say,
two threads away from a big defensive project and so
I can get some honds of wind and check down
on the new run block here towards the end of

(07:41):
the month. And yeah, that's the weather's fine. Couple of
kids home for est tomates, so might not be able
to slave labor if they like.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
He Vennison schedules. Just finally talking to David Stevens last week, Jamie.
He was pretty optimistic about schedules.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, no, that Venison's good. And we've got high contract
process for rots of the winter from from a law
once and in eighteen fifty team siven Moata been so
that's good. There's quarter able of stability in the venus
and just at the moment, so it's just it's nice.
It's you can almost budget to it, which is really
really pleasant because it has it has its ups and dance.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Doesn't it get on your jim you enjoy the afternoon.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
That's what I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
Mate, Jamie King of like Harouka and the Sage and
Dan family round up thanks to sagein den Stock Foods
and the sky Screepy here just off mind straight and go.
