Speaker 1 (00:08):
Welcome back to the Master.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Andrew Ordison out of News Talk zby joins us this afternoon.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Orders.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I can still hear vividly in my mind yourself and
Wendy Peatree shrieking with delight when Ryan Fox got that
part on the eighteenth to win the Open on Monday morning.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Yeah, it's pretty vid.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
In my mind too Andy. To be honest, I think
that's just one of the great moments of New Zealand sport.
Not our commentary or ad hop commentary of it, but
just the fact that Fox walked up to that part,
drilled it and he was a Open championship winner, joining
Sir Bob Charles Michael Campbell day with your co I mean,
that is a moment to save it. And I just
(00:47):
think that after all that Ryan Fox has given the
media over the years, it doesn't matter what status game
is in how he's fearing highs lows c has always
been available to comment. He's never forgotten who he is
and where he's come from, and I just think that
is so richly deserved. You know, that is a great
victory and I can't of Mentionine, We'll have too many
(01:08):
troubles with the Helburger wwards this year perhaps unless there's
something absolutely blows you away that's got to be right
in the top tier. I would have thought in this.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
South And wins the MPC that was pretty much Fox
He's but.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
Canterbury taking the Shielder after.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
That'll be a dazy would talk on that shortly. But
just regarding Ryan Fox and all the commentary you read
is the way that he just in and out, don't
mark about. He hits the ball, he doesn't over complicate it.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Yeah, I think it's a bit of the every man
about Ryan Fox. And he is just he's seemed whenever
I've talked to him over the years on a few occasions,
he's he's always seemed so down to earth and yeah,
this has never forgotten his roots. And I suppose it comes
from from his family background Mum and dad, Grant and Nadell.
But also, you know, even beyond that, I think the
(01:55):
grandson of Merv Wallace from the New Zealand cricketer, and
I think he's just been this was this amazing sporting ability,
really hand eye coordination, et cetera. And he's just able
to deliver and he's got so much power to his game.
But he's also got the finesse of a short game
and parting now as well, and as we saw, I
mean eleven foot part too when you know you probably
(02:15):
as his caddy was saying, you get one shot at
there in your lifetime, perhaps sometimes for most people, and
would most people would even get that, and he just
ruled it. And I think, wow, that is that's really
just seizing the moment and seizing the day and just
such an amazing achievement the Open championship and then bringing
home the Cleric jade this morning, and even he go
(02:37):
for flight, he knows how to bridge the buttons of
the average key, knowing that he's looking at the fus
thing he's looking for. As a pie, his favorite was
a steak, bacon, jam and cheese pie at his local bakery.
So yeah, that is just that's that's right out of
the top drawer from my mind.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
And he's just so relatable.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
I mean, his father was a champion All Black first
five during that unbelievable era when they won over fifty
games in the late eighties, and the family just seems
to be very relatable to your day to day Ki we.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Exactly, and I think too for Ryan Fox, what pleases
me most I think is that we don't talk about
Ryan Fox being grant sonnymore do we or move whilst
his grandson. We talk about Ryan Fox in his own
right having escaped that shadow well and truly in just
having created his own persona as a sportsperson, as a man.
(03:28):
I mean, he has just done it his way and
he's ultimately succeeded and nothing can top that. Now, you
wouldn't think in terms of yeah, he's reached a very
tom I thought it was good enough just to have
even won a couple of PJ. Twurvin, but to have
done that now, I mean, yeah, I think that's just
so special. And yeah, just seeing that foot of the
(03:49):
morning of coming out into the airport and even afterwards
when he won the other day and just being able
to be on air at that time and just sing
it live five point thirty in the morning, and it
was just a special thing in our news from I
think it brought a lot of joy to everyone, it
was my take from it, and people couldn't stop talking
about it over the course of the day. Now in
(04:11):
the week for that matter.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Oh look, it's big news and it's still as orders
because Nelson's Michael Campbell two thousand and five, Dame Ldier Cove.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
More recently have we seen this occur.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
But you talk about sports, how they used to be
like the absolute peak of an athlete's list.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
But these days not so much.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
I suppose the Commonwealth Games being hosted in Glasgow yet
again because rural Victoria had to pull out.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Yeah, I think, I mean, hats off to Glasgow for
taking that risk and for scaling it back. I think
to would agree. I mean, for me, it sort of
falls between that high performance sport doesn't end in you
sort of more community level sport, and it's right in
the middle of there, somewhere like a festival jambuoree type
of occasion. I suppose to throwback to Empire, a throwback
(04:57):
to the Commonwealth itself. You know, a lot of countries
is probably moving on beyond that now, but it's a
it's a there's some strength I suppose, and that you know,
it's a pinnacle event, say for bowls, for for netball,
all those really strongly Commonwealth like skewed events, and you
know there's an element of that where it is the
(05:18):
peak for some some athletes. But I just I just
hope it doesn't. I guess blur too much, will fall
too much into the shadows, because you wonder what the
future is like to the Colony Games. It's a lot
of investment, isn't it. But at least they've done that.
They haven't got the athletes village this time. That there's
kind of scating it back in a number of areas
because I mean, the fact that Victoria pulled out, I
(05:39):
mean that tells a story in itself, doesn't it. That's
the cities and regions just aren't equipped or don't want
the debt that comes with it. And there's a lot
enough of a return on investment now for hosting Commonwealth Games.
So yeah, it'll be fascinating to see how it goes
and how it fares. But yeah, I mean obviously scale
back and needs ind on team as well. But luck
(06:00):
to them, and I suppose with David Leaky and more
Devillias and the weightlifting and the judoka taking the flag
and the bat and out this morning into that opening
sore many proud moments with the n NBA family. So
you can't de integrate.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
That the Renfrelly shields up for grabs this afternoon and
Alexandra a tiger playing mc Cannerbury.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Oh, Moller in New Park. I mean imagining part of
that con where I mean maybe you are not sure
going down you wanted to be there. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
We're Southland daughters, remember that.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
I can't. I can't, I don't want to, you know,
I guess ruin it pretty well. But it's like it's
just it's gonna be. Maybe maybe to be part of
that convoy, wouldn't it. I mean, yeah, it was south
of the holding, this shield, but great Mid Canterbury never
held it before. I imagine there'll be tumbleweed go through
the streets and roads around Ashburt and the Savo perhaps
(06:50):
given what's what's taking place of it further south and yeah,
Molan New Park of all places in such a cricket
stronghold over the years as well in the summers, and yeah,
it should be. It should be an awesome occasion. You
would think that the opportunity, there's always just that chance,
isn't it. And just that belief and hearing that went
(07:10):
to the coach of Mid Canterbury just talking about the
Hammerson really just that conviction that they're going to be
able to do it. I love it.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Wouldn't that just be the tonic today if it did.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Occur, I would not begrudge that in the slightest I
reckon that would be awesome. You know, if you had
that scenario happened and all beit, you know, Targo fully
expected to win and they certainly deserve their tenure with
the shield. But if mid Canabary, if it did go
through the Meaeds Cup Cup group there, I say, I mean,
(07:41):
that would be even more extraordinary. But it's just yeah,
it's something special about the shield still in New Zealand life.
I think when you have these occasions, and good on
them and the Targo for taking it further afield out
to Alexander rather than just sticking into the Eden or
anything like that. So it just makes a real festival occasion.
I mentioned, there'll be people who are thoroughly enjoying themselves
(08:03):
there in Alexander. The Tsavo.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Just finally you're the hay baron of counties. How's everything
going on?
Speaker 1 (08:09):
The ranch?
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Wow? So much? Hey? You sold it's right away. It's
quite a bit of flywood. Deter anyone wants some. I
think that you know, we'll there'll there'll be some buyers
coming out of that would work soon, so to speak.
And you know, hey, we're getting some cancel actually the
nixt missus Orderson's organizing some might even be this afternoon, Eddy,
and they are coming on boarding and you certainly pay
through the nose for those at the moment understandably. So yeah,
(08:34):
it's we need a few lawn mowers there since we
got back.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
It's a great problem to have orders. So thanks for
your time as always.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
No good on you, Eddy, lovely good at chat.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Laugh out loud with ad proud because life on the
land can be a laughing matter. Brought to us by
sheer Well data working to help the livestock farmer.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
At the end of dinner, I am my day to
shed mind bringing the wine and dessert to our alarm
and picnic this weekend, she says, I don't know what
that is, but sure I smiled, took her hand and said,
