Speaker 1 (00:00):
When the on air Mike goes off, the talk talk begins.
It's Talk Talk with Martha Quinn.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
You know, sometimes you just need to talk back and
lay down a smack oh wow, because people be whack.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
I like it to get back Jack.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
What Karena of Alaska's did was took what Christy was
doing and gave it a twenty twenty five spin.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
I like it.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
That would be the updated version of who did that,
Christy James? Was it like the platters or the ink
spots or something?

Speaker 1 (00:33):
The coasters?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Oh coasters? Yes, wow, Christie James with the trivia, don't
talk back. Welcome to this episode of Talk Talk with
Martha Quinn. And this episode is Karina of Alaska's Number.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Two hundred and forty five.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Two hundred and forty five of Talk Talk with Mark Quinn,
The podcast that I feel like just started basically yesterday,
but lo and behold, we're two hundred and forty five
episodes in. We always invite you to join us. That
unites the Morning Drive with Christy Live cru which is
of course Christy and Karina Velaskaz, and the Martha Quinn

(01:16):
Show crew, which is me and Karina of Alaskaz. We
are a small but mighty trio. We are Las tre Samigaz.
What is going on? Okay, you guys talk amongst yourselves.
I'm gonna have a sipotee.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Remember that time that Martha Quinn started choking when we
were doing the podcast.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
I know, she acts like she just can't stop choking,
like get it together.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
I sware.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
I thought we were going to get so many extra
clicks because she was just gonna choke.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
On the air.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
Exclusive Martha Quinn joking, But she's okay.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Us like those newscasters that have the panic attacks on
the air.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
M there's been now, Yes, that's kind of a thing.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Isn't that interesting?

Speaker 1 (02:00):
It is a thing.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
And what is also a thing is that their co
host keep going like everything is okay.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
I know that is true. It is. I guess that's
the thing you're supposed to do.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Like when you're performing a famous performance with Beyonce and
Destiny's Child years ago. One of the girls they were
all walking out, like the Three Supremes, just walking out,
and one of the girls ate it. She fell so
hard on her face and they just the other two
just kept walking and singing like nothing happened.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
And I'm like you didn't just see your friends face plant.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
And it's kind of like the same thing with reporters
on the air. They just fall out or whatever pass out,
and people just business as usual. I guess that's the thing.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
But it's interesting you don't hear of rockers on stage
mid song having a panic attack. Now, it might happen,
but this day and age with social media, I was
gonna say, but you know, they don't have live cameras
rolling on them, But this day and age, people everywhere
have live cameras rolling on them.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, but people keep when things happen, even at rock concerts,
because a couple of people have fallen, they just keep playing.
They don't stop the music, They just keep playing and
then scrape them up off the ground.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
People are falling off the stage falling off that too,
they do too. There's been a lot of people that,
like when.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Billy Joel recently fell on stage, they all handled it
so calmly, and the cameraman like kind of went over
and in sort of a this is funny way kind
of filming, and Billy Joel made a funny movement to
the point where I thought, is this plant? Like I

(03:44):
almost couldn't tell you know. I saw Earth, Wind and
Fire and the deal is they came out on stage,
ladies and gentlemen. Earth big tube comes down, one of
the guys comes running out, whoever it was, you know,
Maurice White, when sh whoever came out next Verdine White
and Fire sh stuck up and stuck over the top

(04:11):
of mat us Is Square Garden and then the guy
just came running ound. But they didn't stop. They didn't go.
Oh that was where they just kept going exactly that thing.
The show must go on.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
So glad you're okay and you didn't choke, But you
saw how we just kept rolling. I guess that's how you.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Just got to keep rolling. Yeah, it's podcast.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Must go on. So we have been talking in the
Mark Quinn Show about rad grads. You know, I like
to give everything an eighties twist, So we've been talking
about rad grads because it's graduation season. So I thought
it would be really fun to hear what the three
of us like. Let's say somebody listening hired Kareem of

(04:49):
Alaskaz or me, Martha Quinn or Christy James to be
the commencement speaker. What could the grads expect we can
all get a little taste of what our commencement speeches
might be. Like who wants to go first?

Speaker 1 (05:06):
You should go first, Martha Quinn. You always offered it
to us.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
I swear I would totally, Okay, I better be careful
because I'm saying now, I would live for this. I
totally do it. But of course, the day it actually
came up, I'd be like, I'm so nervous, I'm so nursed.
What I would do as I would basically get out
there and I would say, guys, congratulations, you all, each

(05:29):
and every one of you worked so hard to get
where you are today. The community, your parents, everyone is
so proud of you. And let me say, don't lose
your grip on the dreams of the past, the dreams
that you have right now. One day they are going
to be the dreams of your past. But you don't
want to lose your grip on them. You must fight

(05:51):
just to keep them alive. It's the eye of the tiger,
it's the thrill of the fight. Now, get out there
and rise up to the challenge of your rival. And
then I would do a mic drop moment and I
would walk off the stage that would be my speech.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
I like that, I like that little rock and roll?

Speaker 1 (06:12):
What more do you need?

Speaker 3 (06:15):
I think anything else beyond that is the speakers are
trying to justify their paycheck.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Hmm.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Okay, do commencement speakers get paid? It depends on who
you are, But I don't think. I think it's a
great quob I didn't know.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
I think they get a stipend or you know, maybe
a donation of some sort.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yeah, yeah, but I would say, maybe, yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Maybe it's a maybe it's an honor gig.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Right exactly, an honor gig. They might get a you know,
an honorary degree later down the line, maybe say that
a building named after them. I don't know, some sort
of award or accolade. I think that's it. But I
don't think they get paid out like cash. But they
probably don't have to pay for anything to get there,
you know, and like a stipend.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Karina velasqu guess where are you? I guess you don't
have to say the school. I didn't say the school.
I don't know where I would imagine this happening. What
would be your commencement address?

Speaker 4 (07:10):
Oh gosh, I would say to look forward to your
future don't look behind you, don't take anything personal in life,
and to have fun and to burn.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Brighter than the sun. I just real life, I rhymed.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
I like that.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Yeah, I would say something along the words of just
staying positive and to be kind and you know, just
trying to make friends with everyone else in some sort
of way. But I like that that take not take
things so personal in life, which is hard to do.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
I thought it was I thought it was really cool
when I played a piece of Dolly Parton's commencement speech
that she gave in Tennessee a couple of years back,
and she said a really interesting thing. She distinguished first
of all, between dreams and wishes. She said, dreams are
when you visualize yourself in a success full position with
the intent of taking the steps to get yourself there.

(08:07):
Wishes is kind of like hoping something will just magically
happen to you. I like, it will just happen, which
I thought was really interesting. And then she said, never
ever ever blame someone else if it doesn't happen. That's
in your department. I was like, WHOA, that's a truth bomb.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
That's good.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
That is actually really good. That's why another reason to
love Dolly Parton.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Oh forget it. If there is a Queen of America,
it would be Dolly. Let's just put a big crown
on her head.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
Yeah, what would be your commencement speech?

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Well, you know, there's something that I look at occasionally
when I'm feeling like unsteady in life, and I think
I would share this with the students. And they are
ten tips. Okay, do you want to hear all ten?
Or maybe I cant three?

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
No, let's go okay. Number one, you aren't stuck. You're
just repeating your comfortable patterns. Growth feels uncomfortable. People avoid
it by default. You're never too busy, you're just not
prioritizing the right things. If it matters, make time for it.
Perfectionism is just procrastination in disguise. Stop waiting for the
perfect moment.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Just do it.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Start where you are with what you have. Number four,
you can't think your way into confidence. You got to
act your way into it. Take your small steps and
then stack your winds and let that build. And then
number five is most of your stress comes from avoiding
the hard conversations. Just face them because it's never as
bad as you think. And oftentimes it'll be better than
you imagined. Six is discipline beats motivation. You won't feel

(09:45):
like it a lot of the time, but just try
and do it if you can. Seven Your environment shapes
your results. So fix your habits, protect your peace, clean
your space. Number eight comfort zones. Oh no, I didn't
say I'm perfect. I'm saying these are the things that
I'd like to share because they help. Comfort zones shrink

(10:07):
over time. So the longer you stay in one, the
harder it is to break free. It's kind of like
you stay in this comfort zone, it kind of closes
in as a cocoon around you, and then it's harder
for you to get out of that comfort zone because
you're comfortable, you know. And then the fastest way to
change your life is to change what you tolerate, whether
that's from other people or even yourself. And then number ten,

(10:30):
your future is a reflection of your daily choices. So
make the choices to either be a better person, be
a better friend, do that thing you always wanted to do.
Because you get what you think about, whether you like
it or not. And if you think about failing, that's
what you're gonna get. And if you think about winning.
That's what you're gonna get if you think, oh, this
person is against me. Eventually, that's what you're gonna get.

(10:54):
And that's what I would share with the graduates of
twenty twenty five and just anyone looking for a little inspo.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
As they say on social media.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
I forgot to add one for mine. Look for the
purple banana. Haha, what comes there? Christy? Could we go
back to change what you tolerate? Yes, tell me more
about that.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
So the fastest way to change your life is to
change what you tolerate. Hold yourself to a higher standard.
So if you always get pushed around by people, let's say,
you know, oh, man, my friends always take advantage of me.
I always feel like my friends are taking advantage of me.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
You don't have to tolerate that. You can change that.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
You can either choose to accept it and then not
stress the hell out all the time because you're mad
about the way people are treating you, because they don't
know the way you're feeling. That's on you. You can
do something about it. Can change your life, Does that
make sense?

Speaker 4 (12:01):
Change the way you look at things and the things
that you look at change.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yeah, did you just make that up creamavir no.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
I wish I did, but that's somebody I followed, doctor
Wayne Dyer. It's kind of what Christy's saying, Like Jim
changed the way you look at things.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Jim Rohan says, your life does not get better by chance,
it gets better by change, basically what happens. So the
fastest way to change your life is to change what
you tolerate, and that's with yourself or from other people.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
I was thinking about that.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
I'm thinking about that bowl of Tysons that he just
this morning left on the kitchen table. It was like
filled with like I guess he had leftover pasta with
red sauce. And he put his napkin in there, and
then he puts some dental floss in the bowl, and
I'm like, on, first of all, I'm always saying please,

(12:53):
don't put your napkin in the bowl. I don't know why,
it just bugs me. But the napkin was in the
bowl and then the dental fluss is on top, and
I'm like, oh, hun, you put your dental floss in here.
And then he said something I don't know what, but
I've made the choice to just not stress out about it.
Because it's just it's choose your battle. So I was like, yeah,

(13:13):
but I did make a point to say something about it,
but then I didn't stress out about it. But oh,
so very interesting. Now I noticed, Christy that you just
rattled those ten motivational How would you sort of self
help tips tips off the top of your head?

Speaker 1 (13:35):
No.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
I keep them handy so that way, whenever I feel
a certain way, I can just click on it and
it's a reminder. So I keep it readily available so
that way I'm always able to find it and click
on it. And since we were talking about what would
I share, those are the things that I would share.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
I personally think we should put this on our Facebook page.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
I think this is great and I don't know where
it came Christie's tip.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
I think they are great.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
I did not create these. I just find them helpful,
but I don't know where they came from. I think
they came from a book of some sort, but I
don't know where. But I just saw them on a
post one day online and I've kept it ever since.
Hard choice is easy live, Easy choice is hard life.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Lots of stuff.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
I'm congratulations to all the people that are graduating because
it's not easy. It's not easy for the students, and
it's not easy for the parents, you know what I mean,
Like the parents, it's a lot of work.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
I think I would also throw in, if you're graduating,
or even if you're just standing here today, or even
if you're just listening to this podcast today, you've made
it through one hundred percent of your worst days already.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Think about it. You have.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
You're still standing. You've made it through one hundred percent
of your worst days. Like all those times in the
past where you thought like, oh my god, this is horrible,
this is crazy, this is the worst thing possible.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
I'm not going to make it. This is crazy.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Whether it's a divorce or a diagnosis or anything. If
you're still standing, you're still here. You've made it through
one hundred percent of your worst days, and you can
keep on going. You can keep on And that's what
I would tell you, know, high school students, because when
you're young, view of the future is very like narrow.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
It's like you can only see like this.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
You can't see the bigger pet picture, like how much
more world and life and people and experiences are outside
of just this little tiny community that you're in right now.
But as you get out of that and your world expands,
you're like, oh wow, the fact that Johnny didn't call
me back or text me back is like nothing in
comparison to life. But in the moment, it's like, oh

(15:35):
my god, it's the whole world. Yeah, because you can't
know what you don't know, can't. You only can know
what you know, So you only know about Johnny and
you know all of the things.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
That you've already been through. That's the thing about you know,
when somebody changes jobs or moves, Yeah, of course you're
going to be so nervous about the new job or
the new location because all you know is that, Oh
all I know is this. You don't know it's in
the future, so it's so filled with uncertainty, so you
can't It's harder to fill in the blanks in the future,

(16:08):
though some would say go ahead and fill in the
blanks of the future in some way. You know, imagine
yourself hanging out with your new coworkers who you totally love,
or imagine yourself because you don't know, so you may
as well imagine good stuff coming up. But it's harder
to do that than it is to look past in

(16:29):
the past.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
But the future and the past are kind of equally
as real because they ain't today, they ain't here now.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
Nope. And on that note, well, on that.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Note, yes I agree. Congratulations rad grads. Congratulations to the
parents who helped, who said, get your homework done. I'm
getting you to the tutor, I'm picking up at school,
I'm dropping off at school. Whatever it is, have a
wonderful future and the rest of your life. I don't
know how I do know what I'm Thank you for
