(00:00):
Welcome to another episode of The BigThe Big Interview podcast. Like Me and
g Herbert recorded a Thief in aNight a year ago? Really though?
Yeah, So when you record ayear ago and you're sitting on it,
sitting on it, does it getold? Real? Ninety two three LA's
new home for hip hop Big BoyNeighborhood. I've been waiting on this one
(00:22):
right here, man Coyle Ray,Welcome to the neighborhood. Queen. Let
me tell you, I really beenwaiting on this. So we've had a
chance to kind of just talk offair, and I was just telling them,
I'm like, man, I reallyf with you. You know what
I'm saying. I really, Ireally with you. Ill Like, man,
I'm with you, you know whatI'm saying, and for real and
waiting for you to come into theneighborhood. I've seen the way that you've
(00:46):
been moving, you know what I'msaying. And you've been moving in a
business and a profession that a lotof people aren't kind in. You know
what I'm saying. Before we getinto that, did you and I'm pretty
sure you grew up with music inthe household, all right, So when
you grow up with music in thehousehold. Did you have early influences Was
it always in like something that wasjust being played so like growing up it
(01:10):
was you know, my dad wasdefinitely in an industry, and you know
it was more so more of likeit was always a studio in the crib,
but it was more of I guessmagazine time right right, because I
know my dad was rapping, butI was so young, you know,
after the source and after he wasdoing music and everything. I was probably
(01:30):
like nine years old, ten yearsold. So by then that's when I
started understanding actually life, you understand, you know what I mean? So
I feel like, you know,it's just in my blood. Yeah for
real. Yeah, I feel likeit's definitely in my genes, like it's
a genetic, it's in my blood. It's part of me. And did
you always not just enjoy music?Did you always know that you wanted to
(01:51):
create music, that you wanted tobe an artist. I always wanted to
be a star. You know youwere different. Yeah, I know I
was different. I always wanted tobe a star. I donet tried out
for like Beauty and the Beast.I wanted my plays. One time I
played an instrument, I played theflute. Yeah, you know, I
did. I love to dance, jazz, tap, ballet like whatever it
is. I always was into something, and you know what, I kind
(02:13):
of figured that as well, becausegrowing up I did everything. I want
to be an actor, I wantto be a rapper. I want to
be this, I dj' everything, and I threw everything up against the wall
and whatever stuck, radio stuck, and I was like, all right,
I'm doing radio now. You knowwhat I'm saying, and so with you
you want, But I think thatmakes you a complete artist as well.
Yes, you know. I thinkthat's the reason why I work in radio
(02:36):
is because I explored so much beforehandthat I can pull from so many different
things. You know, I don'tlike to be locked in the box.
I feel like, you know, even like, no disrespect to the female
rappers. I love female rapper.I'm a rapper, but I definitely don't
want to just be locked in thatcategory as just coiler ray female rapper.
I want to be that female artist. I do want to be able to
(02:58):
live, you know, in theR and B side. That's why I
have the R and B songs likeoverthinking. I want to be able to
live in the you know, Iwant guys to be able to turn up
to my music as well and havethat real life stuff that people could relate
to. So I don't know,like, I love music and I feel
like it's just something that I'm reallynaturally great at. And you know,
I'm glad that people are starting tosee that now. Yeah. And when
(03:21):
you say starting to see it now, it's crazy because no matter how much
work you did before, it's likeyou're in now, You're it's like almost
in competition with yourself. People alwaystry to put people in competitions anyway,
but now that you have what youyou know, you're working on a catalog.
Now you know you're in a positionwhere we could compare your music too,
(03:43):
though, Yes, And I feellike, you know, it's so
crazy because when I dropped the debutalbum, yeah, trend Cetter. Yeah,
Yeah. When I drop my debutalbum, trend Setter, everybody was
like yo, eleven k, elevenk eleven k. You know, I
guess like academics and everybody was like, you know, posting, doing whatever
they got to do, right. But it does bother me because I think
about it. I've not got nominatedlike over six times there's so many different
(04:05):
things I've already been on Billboard, you know what I'm saying, from No
More Parties and Big part and theremix like the original and with Dirk shout
out to a little Dirk and justwith twining them, and you know,
I don't perform at every festival stage, so I feel like a lot of
people expected so much from me,and they really didn't even look at all
(04:25):
the things that I've accomplished without thealbum, you know what I'm saying.
So I feel like and even then, if you look at the numbers,
like eleven point five K is equalto over three hundred thousand streams within like
three days I had, and Ifeel like, as a new artist,
that's great for me, you know. And you know what I think too.
If people haven't had a chance tolisten to transset of the album yet,
(04:45):
right, it grows like there's adifference between and I've been in here
for a minute where somebody can comeout and they'll sell a whole lot and
then they'll drop right and then you'llsee something that's proven word of moubl or
have you checked it? You know? Because I know people that get into
my car, people that I talkedto. I put them on your album,
(05:06):
you know what I'm saying. SoI don't look at first week sales.
I look at what it made, what it did for me, and
you want to look at the longterm, you know what I'm saying.
And when you were talking about notbeing put in a box, that's the
same way. I feel like whenit comes to Snoop, somebody like that.
You know, Snoop Snoop rap,But Snoop is a brand, you
know what I'm saying. You say, you say Snoop, you say Snoop
(05:27):
Dogg. This dude done did agospel album, a reggae album, he
knowne, did shows with Martha Stewart, you know, got one with Kelly
Clarkson. So I feel like that'sprobably what you're thinking of as well,
like man make coy Lray the brand. Yeah, Like there's so much more
out there. It's like, youknow, I feel like us artists have
to do a better job at showcasingreal life stuff and other things outside of
(05:50):
just the typical like the Lamborghinis, the Burkins, you know what I'm saying,
the flashy life, and you know, Snoop does a great job at
doing that you know, he's afamily man, and I feel like that's
why a lot of people connect himtoo, because he shows that and people
I do that. I do thatas well. But I'm cooking, I'm
dancing, I'm doing whatever I gottado to make people understand like I'm a
(06:10):
real person too, but I makegreat music. Do you feel like sometimes
people don't want to see you happy? I feel like, because you could
be in a video dance and Ihaving a good time, They're like,
look at her, yeah, smiling. I'd be seeing like weird tweets and
commons to be like, oh Ijust can't stand coiler, right, But
and you do you look at certainthings on social media? I mean,
(06:30):
yeah, I have, I haveit. I use the app so like
it's right there in my face. You have to see it. It'd be
crazy, But I never understand why. Right. But what I do understand
is, overtime, there was peoplethat felt like that that now long no
longer feel like that. Right.Yeah, So that person might feel like
that now, but he might justchange his mind later. It ain't my
job to make him understand, youfeel me like, it's just my job
(06:54):
to be myself. And if hedon't understand and follow the wave and accept
me for who I am. Idon't know what to tell you. Has
it been kind of upheel for you? Like, and I mean unjustified uphell?
What's uphill means? Like, youknow how sometimes where it's like you
can go do a festival, youcould do something, and it's like you
gotta be five times better. Ohyeah, because people already want to cross
(07:15):
their arms or you know, lookat you a certain way. I mean,
it's so crazy because like I know, last year, I went through
Hell with this whole hate train, right and everybody was like dead crowd,
dead crowd, dead crowd. Butit's just whats me off? More?
Is like not being able to reallychange the narrative when you want to,
like right then and there, youknow what I'm saying, Like if I
(07:38):
could have just done something different,Like for example, if I'm performing and
I just I broke out of noMore parties. So if my set's like
fifteen thirty minutes and I'm performing songspeople don't know, then they're just gonna
sit there and be engaged. Aslong as I'm not getting booed, That's
what's gonna happen. But because I'mso viral, it works so good on
these platform these blogs, numbers doso well. It's like keeping the lights
(08:00):
on over there. They're like,yo, let's eat this up. So
I don't blame it. You know, it's a hustle. I keep their
lights on and keep my eyes on, you know what I'm saying. And
I just I take the hate andI applied more pressure. So when they
all like dead crowds and stuff, what I did was, I'm like,
y'all need a choreographer. I needa movement coach. I want to do
vocals like I want to do vocallessons. I want to be able to
just perfect my craft. I wantto be able to do backflip. I'm
(08:22):
doing cartwheels. Whatever I gotta do. And that's what I've been doing.
Right. I got to show inSouth Carolina on Saturday, and I've been
rehearsing for it. Were going crazy, Like choreography is on a whole other
level for people that listen to thealbum transset or what have you been getting
back from people that really listen tothe album? No skips? Like yeah,
(08:43):
I have not heard one bad commentabout the album. It's so crazy,
like I'm talking at people that reallylisten, because I really listened to
the album. No people. Yeah, this is the first time that I've
never seen a negative comment about thealbum. Even with the eleven K or
whatever it is, it's still noone's still saying that the music is bad.
So I worked three years for this, so that's all that matters to
(09:05):
me. You know, when you'dwork on something for three years and there's
so many outside entities, you know, there's so many voices. You know,
how do you keep all the voicesand all the negativity out of your
head or do you use that asfuel because it's going to be there anyway.
You could use it as fuel, like you're getting the studio, and
I don't want that kind of fuel. Yeah, no, no, no,
because sometimes, like I'm human,I'm not gonna lie. Sometimes It's
(09:28):
been times where it put me ina really bad place. You know.
Depression is something that's really hard tocome out of, and but you know
the best part about coming out ofit is coming out of it, Yeah,
and actually looking back and be like, damn, I can't believe that
I overcame, you know, Andit's times I was locking myself in the
room, I kind of lost myconfidence and try to really question myself.
(09:48):
But then when I got it back, I don't know how. I just
prayed, and I just prayed.I got a small circle, so I
got a great team. And thennext thing, you know, God just
show me like you still working hard, You're still hungry, like there's nothing
wrong with you, right, there'ssomething wrong with them. They just don't
see it. So I need youto keep going so these people could see
(10:09):
it. And that's exactly what Idid. When you go in to do
Transsetter, do you already have inyour head what you want the album to
sound like? Because before we goton air, I was just talking about
how I felt like you had acomplete album, you know, and I
felt like it was a life album, because life does this. There's ups
and downs. There's trying to party, there's time to be somber, there's
(10:31):
time to you know, there's tryingto celebrate, there's time to be vulnerable.
And I felt like Transsetter, likeyou have that in the album.
I always wanted to be that femaleartist that like men could really enjoy listening
to you, like I want themto be able to sing every word from
word like in. I feel likeI've done a really good job at that,
even with no more parties. Youknow, like even with Big Per,
(10:52):
I knew that Big Pert was sosexy and to get it, yeah,
man, free pool shisty. Butto get pooh shisty on it,
it was like, get the guy'sgonna let this, you know what I'm
saying. They're gonna be able totalk and the girl's gonna be able to
don't outshine you either, you knowwhat I'm saying. It's not like you
know how some people do a featureand it's like, oh, they to
it up on that feature, andit's like you you do transsetters and you
(11:15):
get the body of music. Howmany songs do you record? I recorded
like over three hundred songs within thesethree years, I swear. How do
you pick your babies? So asI've grown over three years, the music's
gotten so much more amazing. Andthen also to like, there are songs
(11:35):
that I've that was my favorite, like me and g Herbert record A Thief
in a Night a year ago, really though, yeah, a man,
So when you record a year agoand you're sitting on it, sitting on
it, does it get old toyou? Like, Okay, that's now
with Nicki Minaj. You know that'sone of those things where Nicki works by
choice. You know what I'm saying, It works by choice. How did
(11:58):
that come about? And do youknow how when Nicki Minaj's name come up,
do you think, oh, that'sgonna happen? You're like, man,
like what you mean? Like didyou think that? Like you know
that's that's going for the start themoon and the stars. You know what
I'm saying, Oh, yeah, did you know that that was gonna happen?
Like I knew that I was gonnaeventually collab with Nikki One day,
I had a feeling that someone fromthe great is going to come in and
(12:22):
believe in me. I don't knowwho's gonna do it first, right,
because she's really like that girl. You know, she's at a way,
she's a gold brouh And I wasso happy, more than surprised to see
like she actually really believed in meoutside of everything that was going on.
You know, that means that shereally is musically inclined. You know that
(12:46):
she sees talent. You know, she sees like she understands the bridge because
she's done it herself and she's veryversatile. So I feel like that's why
she because she sings, she raps, she's on pop. She's used her
voice as an instrument. You know. She know what to do with her
voice. And I love even whenyou just throw throw a word away,
and that's using your voice as aninstrument, you know what I'm saying.
(13:09):
So I feel like you do agreat job. Man. My fans be
like, oh, I want yoursongs longer and stuff, and it's like
I feel you. I'm trying, you know, but sometimes when you can't
do that second verse, it'd behard. So when I don't, when
I don't do the second verse andit's time to go back in the studio,
it'd be like damn. But youwant to know who helped me with
that? Nicki? Nicki Mina,Yeah really because I said the album recorded
(13:31):
first before Nikki or yeah, okay, yeah for sure, and I had
and I had sent it to Isent her some songs and and aii my
young girl. Right. See,that's another one, and that's almost like
clips. You know what I'm sayingWhen I say so listen, So I
try to go back in and addthat there's another I have a second part
on my verse. I have itslike a whole verse now, so there's
(13:52):
the second part of the verse thatwasn't there. And it took me forever
to really try to catch the vibeagain and I couldn't. So I was
just like, yok, like YoungBlue about to carry me on this one,
that that's gonna be the song hecarried because he's so great and you
know the song he walked on it. So I'm like Nikki text me was
like, child, I'm gonna needyou to go back in and add another
(14:13):
verse. Really, I'm gonna needyou to go back in to another verse
yet because she heard on AI andshe's not even a part of it.
She's not even a part of thesong. And she was like, I'm
gonna need you to go back becausethis song is so amazing girl. And
I was like, Nicky said,I gotta go back, and I don't
know if she's I'm like, naw, I don't know. I got battery
on my back for some reason.I don't know what it was. She
just it's hurt, like I don'tknow, and I just wanted to prove
(14:35):
myself, like you know, andand even I did it, like I
went in and I made the song. The second part of the verse is
one of the best parts of theman. It's crazy that she cared enough
to listen and tell you to doit, and you cared and listened enough
to go and do it, andI did it. And that's what because
you had already told yourself you weren'tgonna do it. No, I wasn't.
(14:58):
I was, like I told him, saying, I told I'm like,
you got that one, got thatone. Yeah. But then I
added that verse, and I'm sohappy for that. So now ever since
I'm like this new album, I'mlocking in making sure I'm writing, doing
trying different things, and making sureI do not leave without that sex.
That's the one thing that I noticedbecause with me also, Corey, I'm
(15:18):
a I'm a credit reader, youknow what I'm saying. Like, I
study music, and so when Ilook at when your songs are over,
I look at the credits. Yourname is in your credits. You know
what I'm saying. So you takea pride in writing your music hard in
the confidence written by me one hundred. I don't got no one, but
(15:41):
you know what that sounds. That'sbecause there's some people that can deliver songs.
Everybody delivers somebody else's song, Butthat sounds like you. You can
tell when I worked with the writerand when I don't. I'm gonna tell
you straight up, I can't.So I'm not gonna even front. But
I you told the wait that thatsound it's you know what I'm saying.
(16:02):
Like you'd have been like, oh, such and such road I'm like,
well, damn, you did it. Yeah, but it's different when you
say I wrote it. Yeah, now I wrote it. I wrote ninety
nine percent of my project. There'sthree songs that I had got helped with
co writing. Everything else is writtenby me, even ayaii like ayayi me
in the studio with young Blue, like me and him, y'all walk together,
(16:22):
yeah yeah yeah, side by sideand we're just like yo, like
I might help me, he mightthrow a little line in their type thing
or even with my friends type ofvibe like yo, like throw me a
little bar side. But written byme, because I feel like that's what
makes me so unique, what Italk about in my experience. When you
do put it on this song,ay yai yai, right, do you
hear what the music sounds like?First? Like because I would think with
(16:45):
Ayai Yai, I would think thatthat would scare some artists just the way
that it sounds, you know whatI'm saying, Like, so did you
know, like I'm on this likethis because Yo Blue is like a universe.
So dude, like, I don'tdrink, but it makes me want
to have a drink and be likeon a beach. I don't know where
(17:07):
I'm you know what I'm saying.Yeah, yeah, young who is a
guru. I'm telling you he's reallymelodic, kicker rat. But he didn't
be good with the thing, sohe got on and he like I want
to get managed yea, And I'mtalking now. I'm like, I'm gonna
keep up with you, like I'min the studio. This is my session,
is my song. I'm trying togo ahead, and I'm like,
this is a collap here. Idon't mind. You could come with me
(17:27):
fun tonight man and tell me thatdoesn't sound like vacation. You know what
I'm saying. But that's what Iwas talking about when I when I say
the full body of music, thefull body of music and putting together an
album like that and living the album. You know what I'm saying and living
the album. So I'm gonna tellyou straight up, man, I can't
wait to see what's ahead of you, you know, and I wish the
(17:49):
best for you, because it's soI can't imagine. Like I was talking
to you off air, I couldn'timagine I was over five hundred pounds at
one point. I can't believe that. I couldn't imagine coming into the game
now, you know what I'm saying. Where everybody has this device, everybody
has an opinion. Most opinions aregoing to be negative, you know what
(18:11):
I'm saying. Yeah, so Icouldn't imagine coming in right right now.
And this is just the way itis. This is today's market price,
This is just the way it happens. This is just the way it happens.
You know what I'm saying. Well, shout out to the ones who
now we're here, because it ishard, I tell you, but it's
I'm telling you. The best partis overcoming, like when you win the
(18:32):
race, or like when you're inthe race and you're finally at the race
after all the hard work, thatadrenaline and that you feel really just takes
away everything else, Like you justjust in that moment, and that's what
I feel like they and over time, I'm getting so much better at it,
you know, and let them takeme on my character and then you
and and her her, you knowwhat I'm saying, like, go yeah,
(18:56):
and I got a grammy, Dinygrammy. That girl got that girl
play instruments, that girl. Butthat's another thing where you're like, man,
like she came to the table. You know what I'm saying. She
came to the table. And thenthe like the way that y'all record together,
like y'all damn near sound the same, you know what I'm saying,
(19:17):
And she has that she kind oflike put that rappie feeling on it.
Yo. I sing her her versebar for bar, I'll yell at out
the window like there's always think Keisha, yeah the streets. I be going
crazy because she's it's like I knowshe, I don't know. I don't
know something about her. I feellike she's gonna be here for a lot,
man, And she's super talented. She's super talented. And it's crazy
(19:41):
too, man, because even whenyou think about the lyrics, there's like
we say, there's vulnerabilities that isexposing and then there's times when it's like
the homegirl, super sexy. Youknow what I'm saying, like like you
gotta think, you know, rawdog, like in the kitchen. I
want to do that with my wife. You know that. I want my
(20:02):
wife and the kitchen. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. And I
won't go home and tell her againlike baby before the kids get home.
But that's just one of those thingswhere you got allow an artists to be
an artist and express themselves. Ain'tin the kitchen every day, no,
but you've seen it in movies andstuff, so we should be able to
(20:22):
put it in our songs. Yeah. Do you feel like people want to
censor you? Yeah, because Ifeel like I'm so I look so young
or I don't know what it is, or because I'm not like I look
my I feel like I look myage. Actually I do want that looking.
I feel like I look my age, you know. So I feel
like, you know, it's justhigh expectations and what they see out there,
(20:44):
you know, they see all theysee what they see, and then
they see me and they be like, nah, this is a little girl
probably, and I'm like, no, I'm a kid. What you want
me to do. Kid, Ain'tnobody you know what I'm saying. I
wrote that. I should have saidI'm making love in the bedroom exactly.
(21:06):
I'm a grown woman. Yeah, she didn't write that in like suspension or
you know, detention class exactly exactly. Fact. I was ready for this
Big, That's fact, like Iguess. So if that's to interpret from
the song Big, then ahead.Hopefully you and your wife that y'all worked
that out. Hopefully you guys workedthat out. Neighborhood eighties. You find

(21:53):
she liked him as well, andso she thought we were going to be
in like a polyamorous relationship, goingto be the three of us. Basically,
she asked me to share my manwith her, and I said no.
She stopped being my friend completely.Damn. She was like, can
I sleep in the bed with you? Guys? We're like no. Somebody
asked, how does she look?I look like me? Who looks better?
