Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Cody Ellen's podcast. This is Cody Cast So
Excited with new music. Wild Blue Part one, out on Friday,
is so good his brand new album, Are you like
this with your life? Where if you have so many
things going on and the touring and the music and
with me, if I get to be home, I like
(00:21):
to be a home straight up. It's hard to explain
to people who are never at home. They're like, why
don't you go on an exotic vacation somewhere. I'm like,
it's like, hey, you want to go out tonight? No,
I don't. I just got on my couch. I remember
what it feels like. I'm looking at my dogs. No,
I don't want to go anywhere. Like the idea even
if they're getting my bags packed to go somewhere, it's like,
I hate I hate the idea of it because I'm
(00:43):
constantly packing to go somewhere. Yeah you are, so it's
nice to now. Yeah, jeez, you're like globe trotting. Now
there's a lot part. Do you do you have a
travel blog? I should write? I think you should. I'm
I'm subscribed already. A vlog of log would be awesome. Yeah, um,
yeah I should work on that, which, by the way,
I would probably put your visit to your house on
(01:05):
my flog, would you from Friday? Yeah? Yeah, it's a
zoo over there, for sure. It's exotic. Well, I mean
the dogs obviously make it exotic and zoo like. But no,
that was really fun. Thanks for having us all. Thanks
for coming over. Man, are you one of those people
who's who's open about anyone coming in your home? Are
you protective of it or how do you feel about
(01:25):
stuff like that? I'm not, I'm honestly so the reason
I was relaxed in the ease, which I was by
the time you got there, Yeah, I had a couple
of events happened before that. The only the only concern,
honestly is my dogs. I mean, Ella is a flight risk,
and people who don't understand what the words flight risk
mean stress me out like they're just like the gates open,
the doors open. I'm like, yo, once my dog takes off,
you're not gonna get it back for three hours, Like
(01:48):
this can't happen. So that's the only part that stresses
me on Just because I live so close to a
like a major road and she has stopped traffic on
that road before, so it's you don't It's just like
you don't know. Man, you were there, you know, one
of this kind of situations. But other than that, No,
I actually love people coming out of the house. I
feel like being at the house makes me make more sense. Yeah,
I did feel that, like I understood you a little better.
(02:08):
I knew music was a big part of your life.
So there's music everywhere in your house, like instruments just
laying around, But it didn't make more sense to me
seeing it all. So Wild Blue Part One is the
name of the album. I just braithed so deeply. When
I finally get to say it, I feel like a
human again. Do you feel like a weight has sort
of been lifted because you've been working up to this
moment for so long. Yes, I mean I'm sure you
(02:30):
can see on my body language right now. And just
like so, I'm so stressed out right now because there's
a lot going on, but at the same time, I'm
so relaxed because it's like I've I have been waiting
for this to come out for well not forever. It's
more about the lapse time it took to get to
this project, and I just I want when people hear
this album, I think they're gonna hear me for the
(02:51):
first time in like seven years, and so that's a
big deal for me. That's the biggest deal for me.
You explain that to me on Hot twenty the TV show. Um,
I wanted to understand little more about that for our listeners.
So what do you mean, Like, do you feel like
this is the most pure version of Hunters so far? Yeah? Um?
And there were shades of all that for it was there.
(03:14):
It was it was blurry for a minute. Uh, and
not like because I was afraid or what like, Well,
there was a million different reasons. Um, but yeah, I think,
with without a doubt, this is the most And when
you hear the whole thing front to back, like the
songs that I've put out already, Dear God, Heartbreak, one Shot,
(03:34):
one good reason, they start to make sense when you
hear it all in context, and especially you know now
that I get to tell everybody that it's only part one,
which means it is a sequel to come. Yeah, you
could say a sequel a series maybe dot dot dot Alright, Um,
And what's the overarching theme for people who just hear
Wild Blue? I think, without kind of overthinking. I mean,
(03:55):
Wild Blue Part Part one UM is about like the
flying dream, the weightlessness, shedding things that keep you from
moving forward. Um, and and really all the steps of that.
There's great in that, there's beauty in that. There's also
like struggles and that's like, dear God, is that right
for the album? And um, but there's also like massive
(04:19):
lessons learned and that's what Madness and Still kind of are.
Even though their book ends of the album. One is like,
even though I'm at the beginning of this of telling
you this story, I can tell you what I've learned
already and I'm gonna tell you how I learned it.
And then Still it is just kind of um feels
like the end of the project until you realize that
it's really the beginning of part two. Um. There's a
lot of topics that I kind of touched on on
part one that having already completed half of part two, Um,
(04:43):
we we go a little bit deeper on part two
than we did on part one. And how soon will
we get to hear that? I don't know this it
is done. That's that's our new motto. You know, Uh,
we we waited, we planned, we strategized our way all
the way to this point, and then finally we just
threw up our hands and we were like, let's just
put it out and make that the new rule. When
it's ready, when we feel it, Um, let's do it
(05:05):
and be scared of it. Nice. For the last single,
people are hearing his heartbreak, which when you hear that,
you think it's a sad song, but it's actually upbeat,
treating that breakup as sort of a stepping stone to
the next, to the one, actually to the one, um,
which is kind of an optimistic way to think about
love and heartbreak. Um. Are you a generally a glass
(05:25):
half full kind of guy or half empty? I'm a
glass half full kind of guy. Um, unless there's like
a shadow of like a little puppy on the wall
and it looks like a wolf. Then at that point
I get scared for no reason, you know what I mean,
Like this are two opposites in me. But I am
a glass half full guy. I don't know where I
(05:46):
got that from. I think I got I think I
got it from both my mom and my dad. But
and that's part of part of the name. While blue
came from you know, the blue sky Uh, that's kind
of what you call a dreamer. I guess you know,
it's always blue sky. And but that's that's kind of
how I operate. I feel like that's that and it's
it's served me well, so why I stop now? It
really is all about the journey, and that can be anything.
(06:06):
We're talking about love with heartbreak, but the career as well,
heartbreaks along the way and sort of getting to the
point where you feel like you're so what particularly comes
to mind when you think about how you've been shaped
as an artist to this moment um. Much like with relationships,
you give your heart to someone and sometimes they're perfect
for taking care of your heart, and you're perfect for
(06:27):
taking care of theirs. Sometimes it's not, uh, and that's
not their fault. They're not bad people, they're just not
the right teammate for you. And I feel the same
thing applies. Even though it's business and a lot of
people see this business is kind of like a and
and you can you can look at it as a
math equation, as a cut and paste, or you can
look at it um from a I'm gonna pour my
heart and so out on on this and and and
(06:49):
hope for the best, and um, I think the same
thing can happen sometimes in relationships for me personally, because
this music is so personal. Um, I think that I've
definitely had some moments where I gave of someone too
much control over how I felt about my own music
and subsequently about myself. You know, if there's one bad
comment in an email, it's like it blows it like that,
that song is never gonna get recorded. I'm never gonna
(07:10):
believe in it, probably never gonna write anything like it again.
It's all those things that I had to kind of
undo those habits, and it's been a long process. But
because you were so hard on yourself when you read
those comments, that's what you're saying so well, yeah, totally
that too, for sure. I think I think we're all
kind of that way. That's why I try to avoid
that stuff because otherwise you just get wrapped up in it. Right,
it's smart thing to do, that's an adult, That's what
(07:31):
That's what I don't say any better because I see,
why is it that were so bothered by that when
it's just some stranger we don't even know, right, I
just I don't know why that bothers it bothers me
too though when I read stuff well because in the
same in the same way you hope that a stranger
will find it and and and lift it up. You know,
I'm I'm I have to stay open because if I
meet that one person that does connect with the message,
(07:52):
then I've got to I've got to let that mean something.
Wow Blue. By the way, there's an amazing artwork all
through throughout the cover. First off, and who's the artist, say,
Scott Hill, this artist, And by when you walk in
the Hunter's house you see a bunch of paintings from
this artist, Scott Hill. It's more of a gallery at
my house. It's white walls and and you know artists
(08:13):
names and prices too. You can buy it. It's um.
But why were you drawn to this particular piece for
the cover? We technically created it together. I can't take
any credit because I didn't do anything. I called him
and talked to him like umpteen times. But um, we
worked on it. We did. It was a collaborative process.
He kind of let me into his world as a creator,
(08:33):
as a painter, um, and I led him into my
world musically. What the album meant to me and why
I connected with his work. I connected with his work
because he's brilliant at creating a world you can jump
into and but still it's it's still yours to finish.
But there's always like a mysterious figure in the middle
and um, and that's what I wanted for. That's what
(08:54):
I felt like this album was. That's why the first
time I saw his work, I cried because that was
the closest I felt to what I was trying to
put in the mutick. Um, I don't just want to
give people songs hope, you know, I want them to
I want it to be there is. I want them
to be able to jump into this album and go, man,
this this feels like this time in my life. I
wanted to be that soundtrack, right. So that's what I
loved about his work, and we we went through several
(09:14):
versions and and we ended up with this beautiful piece
that is you know, um, this guy just like believing
in this message that he's writing. It's a message on
a paper airplane and he's thrown it out for the
world to see it. It's really beautiful and I'm glad
you're going this direction because you know, record companies, let's
be honest, they want your face to be on there
because you're hunder Hayes. Um, I don't. I don't know
(09:36):
about that anymore, but they want to, you know, identify
the face with the name, and people are drawn to
that for whatever reason when it comes to buying albums.
But I'm glad you're going a direction that's kind of
cool and different, fun and interesting. Heartbreak again, let's go
back to it. Um, let's cover some breaks real fast.
If you're um, got a snack break, how do you
spend that? What are you eating? Uh? Typically crushing a
(09:58):
bag of reesa minis. I eat him, I eat him
like um. Jillian Jacqueline was over writing the things and
I had a bag in the coffee table and she
was talking about something and I just like pounded like
a fistful of ESA's minis and she and she stopped
mid sentences. She was like, holy crap, you eat those
like M and m's. And I was like, yeah, of
course you can carry on that. Yeah, what's that coffee break?
(10:21):
What are you drinking? Uh? Energy? Okay, I need more
than coffee these days. You were a coffee guy football
this well, Honestly, certain coffee drinks make me sick. Now.
I don't know what happened. I don't know why. I'm
sure that somebody I can answer your problem, but it
just it hurts my stomach. It hurts. It also messes
(10:41):
with my voice. Man, you gotta break between songs on stage?
What are you doing catching my breath? Drinking water? And
or if there's scotch? I haven't, honestly, but that hadn't
happened as much lately. Um. It's more just like taking
taking a breath and trying to catch my breath because
that's when I feel like all of my adrenaline goes
(11:02):
nuts on stage and there's nothing I can do to
rein it in, so I gotta try my best. We
thought about this at the beginning, but maybe a break
from the road. It sounds like you might be found
at home for sure, or um, i've been obsessed. Did
we cover the airstream topic when you're at the house.
I don't know. There's this weird thing that's happening to
me right now, and I can't explain it. I don't
know if it's a quarter life crisis or some sort
(11:24):
of misunderstanding between my heart and my head, but I
have the desperate desire I've just had a lot of
successful loan trips lately, so I have this desire to
pioneer stream, load the dogs up, go away for a week,
you know, find a beautiful spot to park, and just
like right, because I enjoy writing, like that's where my
heart is. Um. Not that I would pick it overtouring.
(11:48):
I'm always sensitive to that, um but but writing is
really good for me. So, um, I just love taking
trips and I would probably do that. I've also been
shopping for airplanes because I've planned to actually freaking do
this this fall, our winner, our year. Between the airstream
and the plane, you're gonna head into the wild blue yonder.
(12:09):
Al Right, So how many instruments do you play? I
don't know, not none. Well, you play almost everything. I
mean you've got piano obviously, guitar, tambourini. I mean I
played the tambourn which was just not I'm not gonna brag,
but proud of you. It was pretty good. Um. But well,
you don't have a number four. Huh have you ever played?
(12:30):
Oh oh god, a xylophone is there always there? Have you?
I've tried, tried and unsuccessfully. If you want to try again,
this is actually from nineteen seventy two. This ylophone. Wait, okay,
let me get another scale here? Okay, so what I
(12:50):
have here? Hunter? Okay, got it? It's it's a major scale.
They have four songs, your songs, boy, Okay, I don't
know what's on the cards. Was gonna grab a card
and then play the song and then I guess what
Hunter Hay song it is? This is complicated. I've got
two songs at the same title. I should have thought
(13:10):
of that. That's my fault, not yours. Um okay, um, Actually,
I'm sorry. I feel like that was really good. I
just don't Maybe I'm not good at this. What what
(13:32):
was it? Heartbreak? That's heartbreak? Yeah? Okay, sorry, clost to
the same key? Shall we try another? Maybe I'll get
better as we go here. Um, I don't know if
I will though. Not looking. I'm not looking either. Dang,
that's hard. There's a lot of notes in that. Again
my fault. This is really making me critique my own songwriting.
(14:01):
I know I know the melody of this. I know
that what is that? That's Um? I want I want crazy?
Yes it is, yes, my man? Alright, can we do
this is really fun? This is fun? For me, it's
you're doing this so well. I'm blown away. There's no
(14:22):
bad note on this scale, by the way, just so
everybody at home knows you, there's literally no wrong note
on the scale. Let's keep going with people. Maybe one
more great first instrument and unfortunately this doesn't have a
note that I very critically need for this song. You
want do we got one more card here instead? Whatever
that is. That's easy, okay? Is it wanted? Now? There three?
(15:01):
You probably would have gotten this other one. Thank you
for coming by. I can't wait for people to hear
the project. It's so good. Wild Blue Hunter Hayes available
tomorrow or tonight at midnight Tonight, day up with me.
