Speaker 1 (00:00):
Podcasting from Welcome to Cody Allen's podcasts. Everywhere she gives,
she always brings a light. She's Cam and she's my
guest with the Brandy song out till There's nothing left?
What you have to hear if you have not yet.
When I heard the song, I was like, Wow, this
song is so good. Oh thank you. It was like,
holy sh it. Not only do I love this song,
but I mean, I've always loved you, but I've been
(00:23):
waiting for like the comeback. Yeah, you know flip. You
can hear that, um hair flip. I can't do a
hair flip so um, So what's an emotional emotional hair flip? Um?
Like I said, I just loved it right the first time.
You know, when you love a song the first time
(00:43):
and you want to hear it over and over again.
At least that's how I consume music. Do you do
the same thing where it's like you hear a song
and you're like you just put it on repas three days? Yes,
Because I think there's different ways of loving music, Like
you can hear a song to go that's not really
for me right now, and then you hear it like
a year later, like oh this is my story now
or you know, it can have it can hit you
(01:04):
in different ways. So but this one, and I'm not
ashamed to say it. I listen on repeat, I'm just like,
oh yeah, turn it on and like just when you
finally at the mix right and everything, it just feels
so good. It's also one of those songs I want
to geek out to a little bit with you because
I feel like I'm that person who hears music and
I hear all of the different elements. I'm like, oh,
(01:24):
I wonder how that idea came, like, for example, the
um the repetition of that melody you first hear. Yes,
that's Hillary Lindsay, who's of country music songwriting fame and
Lady Gaga writing fame and stuff like that. She's a
wonderful human being. And her and Tyler Johnson, who writes
(01:45):
everything with me, had like a late night in the studio.
We had written, we hadn't quite like caught fire on anything,
and then they stayed late and pretty sure there was
some wine involved and things got a little crazy, and
all of a sudden, I get a voice memo and
it's that and Hillary playing a beat, and it's like, oh,
(02:07):
that is steamy amazing, so it catches you right away,
and then the lyrics. Yeah, So the next morning we
all went in to write. We wrote with Jeff Basker too,
who writes and produces with me on my last album
and this album too, and we all kind of went
in and it just sort of following that steamy vibe,
you know, came out as this sort of sexy backseat
(02:29):
but also like kind of teen ankst like the world's ending,
I'd love you have to give you everything, you know,
But then also this adult feeling from my end too,
of just knowing, like especially now with my husband, you know,
we're up in the middle of the night doing baby
stuff and you find out how much you love someone.
You're up in the middle of the night, like your
(02:50):
life comes second now, you know, and it just it
shows how much someone can mean to you in those moments.
And I feel like this is what this song is too.
It's saying like I want to give you everything emotionally
physically and not lose myself and you like, I know
who I am and that's who I want to give
to you. It's like a I mean, also, it's just
(03:11):
a jam. It doesn't have to be that to all
those things, but it also has that that depth to
it and it's just sexy as hell. Thank you, I
think so. One more question about the production of it. Um,
when you did the Romeo and yeah, yeah, where did
that come from? Was that just that happens naturally or
lets you mean like the kind of gang vocal sounds
(03:35):
you know? I feel like I want to say, I mean,
I'm obsessed with Roman Juliet, but I feel like the
Hut was actually everybody was in the studio. I think
this was ties idea kind of because it was such
a catchy thing and so why not accentuate it? And
I think we just had a bunch of friends, like
not necessarily musicians, like my husband, his business partner I
(03:56):
think was in the room, like doing it together, and
it's kind of yeah, once you're all drinking and hanging out,
it's like, we can make this sound cool. Yeah. It
is a really strong, incredible three minutes UM. So if
you've not heard it yet, go listen until there's nothing
left available now everywhere. That's right. It's like an answer
to prayer that you're back down too. Because Burning House
(04:19):
was so big and I've just been pulling for you
for years. Thank you. Interviews we get to do. It's like,
you know, you have your can I say I have
my favorites? Should say? Yeah, so I do with my
dogs three? How are they with the baby now? They're adorable.
I mean they're just like they learned early on to
they kind of are timid. They're like, is this something
(04:41):
we can play with? Or like lick you know, and
so we kind of let them be like one lick
and the it's like, okay, I don'tenough, but um, yeah,
they're adorable. They get up in the middle of when
we do, and yeah, we've learned to. It's a little
bit of adjustment to have three dogs and a baby,
but we're all finding our little unit. This is the
second time you've brought up getting up in the middle
of now, so it must be fresh on your Yeah,
(05:01):
I know, sorry, that's I know. That's what I feel like.
When people have babies, that's all they can talk about.
But I swear to God, it's just everything. It changes
your whole life. Like three am thing is it? Several
times a night? Because just this morning I woke her
up myself because I was nervous because she slept ten
hours and I didn't know what to do. I was like,
is everything okay? And I wake up when she's just
smiling at me, Like I'm like, oh, you probably could
(05:25):
have slept a little longer. But yeah, she's she's usually
between six and eight right now. Obvious question, But what
have you learned about yourself through that whole experience? One
that I have been selfish, which was wonderful in my life. Um,
but you know it's like, uh, inconvenient when she liked
(05:45):
to eat and poop and do all those things and
she calls the shots, so you know that's part of it.
And you have a daughter too, right, I do. She's older,
she's out of the house. It's just crazy to imagine that.
I can't even imagine it, and it's so cliche. But
the years will fly by before you know it. But yeah,
I feel like I'm I'm just learning a new level
(06:08):
of awareness of what what really matters in life because
I think you just have so little energy and time
that you have, Like I don't want to swear on
your show if you're not allowed to please okay, yeah,
just zero at this point because it's like if it
doesn't matter, Like and sometimes I'll be in a conversation,
someone will be talking to me and I'm like, this
doesn't matter, Like I need to get out of this
(06:28):
right now, Like I have way more important things to do.
And I kind of like that because at least me
growing up, and I think a lot of women have
this too. You're just trained to be so polite and
not and go along with things, and now it's like,
I don't if it doesn't light a fire, like I
don't have time to go along with it. I like
the philosophy I need to that. Yeah, I mean you
(06:50):
that's powerful. It is. I mean, you're you should know it. Well.
Have they become so independent? I think I have a
hard time also like saying no sometimes you know, so,
I think you're harder on yourself than you are how
it seems to the rest of us, Like I mean,
you coming out and owning all of that, Like you
got to have some hardcore zero gibs to pull that
off in country music. So I appreciate that. That's no,
(07:13):
it's a there's about down happening. I think you do
have to no, internalize who you are enough to the
point you have enough confidence to be able to say
I'm just going to be yea because exhausting to not
do it being means that there are consequences I cannot
predict right now, right They're just going to have to
(07:34):
come because I can't. And I'll take it as me exactly,
love it, love it, praise hands emoji. Back to the
song for a second. It really is about a really
sexy back seat situation going on. But you actually you
wrote this about you and your husband obviously, um, and
so have you? Have you, guys ever been caught in
(07:55):
the book seat? We've never been caught because we know
where to go. But yeah, no, I honestly too. I
just have to say I was a little bit embarrassed
when I first started singing this song because it was like,
am I really singing? I mean, am I really singing
about getting it on in the back seat? I was like,
but I do get it on in the back seat.
(08:15):
And I kind of at this moment like, no, I
got to own this. Guys are singing about getting it
on the back seat all day long and no one's
embarrassed on their account, So why can't this? And I
took got taken back to my grandmother who gave me
the sex talk when I was twelve, and she said,
which her name was Marvel? My middle name, my daughter's
middle name, all Marvel. Obviously a big influence, She says,
Cameron Marvel. Sex is like a milkshake. Once you have it,
(08:39):
you're always gonna want it. And I feel like, from
a small town, farm raised girl from Saskatchewan, if she
can own it, you know what I mean, if my
grandma can own it, I can own it. What country music,
You're right, we don't speak like that. Women don't say
that those things. It's more like, you know, it's like
a Madonna's song from back in the day kind of
(09:01):
where it's like, oh my gosh, you really just went there.
And that's what I think it's so refreshing, is that
it's real. Yeah, And that's that's what I think music
should be doing. It should be naming something that people
aren't always as comfortable to say out loud in conversation yet,
and then everyone goes, oh god, I feel like that too.
It turns out we're all right, well, you know, we
(09:21):
all have armpit hair. Who knew? You know. It's like
those moments where you're like, oh, it's okay, you can
breathe a little and just be yourself. Wait, we all
have a armpit hair. I mean for a time when
you're young you're like, holy sh it, what's happening to me?
And that's like, oh everyone has Okay. I'm so glad
you brought up your grandmother. I didn't know you were
gonna bring that up, but I was gonna bring up
my grandmother because I love the apocalyptic sort of like
(09:44):
theme of video because it is about you know, going
all you know, doing all these things with you until
there's nothing left, like the song says. But my grandmother
always used to say, hey, be careful because when Jesus
comes back, where do you want to be? Like where
is it you're going to be when ever he returns?
In sort of a deep sort of biblical way. But
I could make me sort of think also that with
(10:06):
the apocalypse, like where would you where you want to
be when the world's end? Because a lot of this
was shot at of hockey Talk here in Nashville, so
um yeah, it's like what I want to be found
at a hockey talk? Would that be the ultimate way
to I mean, I think it's a I'm planting my
two feet like I'm here people like asking this like
(10:26):
are you country or you're not country? What are you making?
And also people have all these definitions of what country
music is, whether you're an older generation you feel like
the younger people are doing it wrong, or if you're
someone who's you know, unknowingly a lot of times white,
thinking that people that aren't white can't do country music,
like just plant your two feet, do your music how
(10:47):
you want to do your music. And this I think
embracing where I'm at right now, like I would if
the world was ending, I would be in that hockey
talk with all of these people just owning it. You know,
you took Lucy on our first flight. I saw your
Instagram post where you brought everybody on the plane. Well
you you TOAs us. Yeah, well we're flying up to
New York because with the launch of Tiller doesn't left
till there's nothing left. We did uh Today's show seth Meyers,
(11:09):
you know, the whole she bang. So we're flying up
there because I want her along with me as much
as possible. And I know I kind of hate babies
on planes, and now I'm the one bringing a baby
on a plane. So we brought you know how you'll
see people that give little gifts out so I thought
that was so sweet. So we made little bags with
ear plugs and candy and you know, hi, this is Lucy.
(11:32):
This is my first flight. Sorry in advance. So sweet. Yeah,
people seemed Then everyone gets like, oh, we don't even
mind babies, which I'm sure that's not what they would
have said normally. But they were a little softened up.
And how was she? She was quiet the whole time. Yeah,
so I looked like a angel mother saint. But really
it was luck. The performance on Seth Myers I saw.
(11:54):
I didn't see the Today's Show and but um, the
Seth Meyers performance was great and again moody and just
sort of like I had my breastfeeding boobs on display.
I was fucking proud. Is all get up my whole life.
There's no boobs, you know what I mean? And then
one of the greatest gifts of childbirth is you get boobs.
(12:15):
So I felt pretty good in that outfit. I was.
I was owning it. I love Seth and Hodan, the
whole Today's Show crew is cool. Any fun moments, I mean, yes,
I love the Today Show and I love Seth Meyers.
Saith Myers has other guests on, you know, so of course,
like the germ parent that I am, I took my
daughter around, was like, will Ferrell take picture with my baby?
(12:35):
And Julia Louis dried to take a picture with my baby,
which I'm sure when she's old enough to roll her
eyes she will do that in those moments, but she
can't do it yet, so it's awesome. Yeah, so how
were they adorable? My husband's like, sign my baby, you
know how Will Ferrell they did that? And Ricky Bobby,
he didn't find that funny. I don't think Julia Louie
(12:56):
Drivers was really sweet though. She was like enamored with
her and like holding her little foot and just like,
oh how cute. And people people are I think you
have a special personality you show for a baby that
just goes to babies, and I get to see it
now when people see the baby, so it's really adorable.
What about the next album? I know you're working on it.
(13:17):
Oh my god, yes, and it's coming. It's like there's
a whole bunch of music that's like on the brink,
which is really fun. So I'm sure I'm going to
be back like showing this to you and hanging out
with you because it's yeah till there's nothing left is amazing.
And I still all I can think about is how
anxious I am for everyone to hear the next things
that are coming. Well, I am anxious now to hear
(13:38):
it too, because I feel like it is Cam two
point oh, like there's a whole fresh approach happening here,
and so I'm excited to get my ears around that
new Cam music. Um, you've written songs for Miley Cyrus
and Sam Smith and by the way, Sam Smith and
his song is amazing, Oh my god, heartbreaking is always
beautiful to die for. So bring the new music. And
(13:59):
you have to plans for the year where where we
find you. Otherwise it's going to kind of get announced
with all the new music. So it's coming and then
we're doing still like festivals and stuff in the summer.
But um, yeah, the tour announced will be happening. Still,
it seems like I always see you, um at least
once a year at a crazy fest somewhere. Like your
job seems really difficult. It's so different, it's really hard.
People don't understand how just stressfully, which sunscreen to take?
(14:23):
I don't know SPF thirty or thirty five. Yeah, I
watched SARTs today. Be here when Jesus comes back. I
don't know. Trust me. That haunted me as a child.
I bet I didn't grow up in that kind of environment.
But that sounded terrifying just hearing it. You say it's true.
It was terrifying, and it's crossed my mind so many times,
(14:44):
like I will be somewhere I'm like, oh my god,
I'm gonna gay bar. But if it's the right gay bar, yes, exactly.
I've learned that that Jesus also is all of those
places too. It's not a it's not a thing that
you have to be afraid of. If you believe the Bible.
You believe He's love, right, I mean, that's the first
(15:06):
commandment Love. I mean, I'm here to I'm here for
the sermon. You do it. I'm here. I love you
so much and I'll see you on the road. Thanks
